"Enjoy Your Travel with These Simple Techniques!"
Are you planning a trip to an exotic destination? Taking a business trip? Visiting friends or family? Then make sure you're prepared by reading the rest of this article. In this post, we'll be going over everything you need to have a safe, successful trip, no matter why you're taking it.
When traveling by air, if you find that you need to check your bags, make sure you keep at least a change of clothing with you in your carry-on bag. Then, if your luggage accidentally gets lost and the airline has to track it down, you'll at least have a clean change of clothes. Even if it takes a day or two to find your luggage and get it for you, you can most likely wash your clothing at your hotel.
Preparing a road trip entertainment kit for children can help make sure your family vacation is a dream instead of a nightmare. There is no better way to see the country than a road trip. However, it is essential that your children stay entertained to combat the boredom of a long car ride. Pack travel versions of popular games, cards, and older children may enjoy a journal in which to document their experiences.
Before you leave on your trip, make sure you are up to date on all your vaccinations. If you are taking any prescription medications, be sure to bring extra along just in case. There is always the chance that your departure might be delayed, and you don't want to run out.
To avoid any awkward confrontations, do some research if you are traveling to a foreign nation. This includes looking up standard phrases such as "thank you," "how much," and "how are you." You should also look around for standard customs of the country, such as gestures, so that you can avoid offending anyone with gestures or body language that seem normal to you.
When traveling to tropical areas, always keep your dirty laundry in a closed bag. Hotels and homes in tropical parts of the world aren't as bug-proof as most American homes. Dirty laundry will attract insects, especially ants, meaning that clothing that was simply dirty is now completely unwearable for the rest of the trip.
Traveling by bicycle can have many positive effects on a person and one the overall traveling experience. It will allow one to see everything from a very different perspective. It will also save one from buying gas and increase amounts of exercise one gets. The bicycle should not be overlooked.
The more you plan, the cheaper the flight should be for you. Try and plan your trips ahead of time and budget how much money you want to spend on flights and hotels, as well as, how much you want to spend on leisure activities. Planning out your trip in advance helps you manage your money properly and ensures that you will have a better time.
Now that you've gone over everything you might need to know before you take your trip, you're ready to go and have fun! Traveling can be a lot of fun as well as being a productive thing to do. Whatever your reason, it's always important to be safe and prepared. Have a great trip!"

Today's mix:
Global Underground 014: Hong Kong by John Digweed 1999 Progressive House / Progressive Trance
So, I guess I'm just ping-ponging back and forth between Global Underground mixes by Sasha and Global Underground mixes by John Digweed now. Back when these guys teamed up in the past to do things like Northern Exposure, it yielded some absolute magic, but when they're doing their own separate mixes for Global Underground, I haven't found their output nearly as satisfying. Many would disagree with me on this, though 😅.
But this Digweed double-disc is pretty frickin' good, in my estimation. And what's a little surprising about it to me, in particular, is that I actually really like the first disc—the progressive house one—a lot more than the second disc—the progressive trance one. I've definitely spieled about the late 90s era of progressive house before and how I find it to be largely boring, and the past two mixes that I've dug into from both Sasha and Digweed have much acclaimed progressive house discs on them that seem to cement my view even further.
And yet, the progressive house disc from this set really clicked with me. Diggers gets into a ~deep zone~ in the middle that I don't really jibe with, but a lot of the selections that surround that part are nothing short of excellent. The opener is this sleek and classy, talkbox-infused mix of Underworld's "Cups," by Manchester trio Salt City Orchestra, that sounds like it belongs in some kind of nocturnal-set Mercedes-Benz ad; Leiva's "Something for the Soul" has this fantastically hazy and dubby lead synth to it; Luzon brings in some old world flavoring with his sampling of a late 80s tune by Israeli world music-pop star Ofra Haza in "The Baguio Track;" and then the disc closes with a dark, brooding, and ominous monster from London's Medway, with "Flanker," a song whose constant synth chirps have a way of sounding like an approaching swarm of killer hornets who have their stingers at the ready 😧.
A good amount to enjoy in the second disc here too, especially in its latter half. Digweed runs back-to-back with two different mixes by The Netherlands' Lucien Foort, aka Funk Function; first with Science Dept.'s "Persuasion," which has a bit of an aquatic vibe to it, thanks to a catchy lead synth melody that sounds like rapid, whimsical flute stabs; and then with something smooth in Johan's "Crash." And immediately following that pair is a remix of Dutchman Hole in One's "Amrad in the 7th Phase" by the legendary Ferry Corsten, which features a great, sudden infusion of whistling synths 😌.
Still though, I didn't find this second disc to be as entertaining or cohesive or consistent as the first one. And while people rave about both of these CDs and consider the whole package to be one of the greatest commercial DJ mix releases of all time, I definitely disagree. But out of the trio of GU Digweed mixes I've now ventured into, this one might be my favorite, overall, with Sydney second, and Los Angeles definitely a distant third.
Listen to CD1 here. Listen to CD2 here.
Highlights:
CD1:
Underworld - "Cups (Salt City Orchestra Mix)" A.D.N.Y. Presents Leiva - "Something for the Soul" LSG - "Into Deep (Medway Remix)" Luzon - "The Baguio Track" Jean Phillippe Aviance - "Useless" Medway - "Flanker"
CD2:
Breeder - "Sputnik (New York FM Mix)" Science Dept. - "Persuasion (Funk Function Future Mix)" Johan - "Crash (Funk Function Groove Mix)" Hole In One - "Amrad in the 7th Phase (Ferr's Subliminal Recut)" Bedrock - "Heaven Scent (Evolution Unreleased Mix)"

Since I’ve recovered a clean calendar in time for the really long break, I’ve gotten a list of really, really good roadtrip+foodtrip invites which include the following: -Boracay -Bicol x Calaguas x Freedive x Bike (HUHUHUHUHUHU. You will be mine soon!!!) -Baguio x La Union x Atok -Tokyo, Japan Sagad FOMO ko basta travel na solid ang ganaps. As my basher dad tells me: Alis ka ng alis. Napakalayas mo talaga. Kung maka-alis, akala mo ‘di na babalik. Paano mga aso mo? LOLOLLOLL. Been eyeing Negros, Camiguin and Zamboanga on solo trip, too, however, dad has been low-key missing Holy Week visits to ina’s sleepy hometown. I asked him if sure ba siyang gusto niya ba talagang umuwi or bored lang siya or wala ba siyang gala. LOL. Sabi naman niya, all of the above. Sobrang gusto ko talagang mapag-isa or with a group na outside my past months’ routine because I really need to recharge because Taurus szn on triple steroids is coming soon. May dagdag na namang plot twist na sana naman, last na. Saka I easily get bored talaga kaya para bumalik ‘yung pake ko sa daily grind, I need to pull damong ligaw self out of my usual, inescapable scene. And sooooo, saan ba tayo napunta this really long Holy Week break? Yes, sabi ko, pagkatapos ng burial ng lola ko, ako naman. Pero, I also can’t just leave my dad and my fave tita na ere. HAHAHAHAHAHA. Even boomers and Gen X sila, ‘di sila gaslighters and ‘di rin sila feeling pa-victim which I like. Inaasar pa nga ako ng dad ko na sana all, maraming invites. HAHAHAHAHA. Sabi ko sa kanya, keep up. LOL. Pero ending, as an empath (FUCK) and sabi ko naman, marami pang long weekends pero ‘di na muli a long weekend like this, samahan ko na siya umuwi. Apaka basic ng Laguna. Ugh. South na naman!!! WHYYYYY? But, as I came home this time around with dad to ina’s sleepy hometown. Why not nga ba, Laguna? Why not? Actually, the past years ko lang din narealize that Laguna is underrated. Madali puntahan if you’re near SLEX tapos recently, ‘di na lang buko pie, Pansol saka Pagsanjan Falls ‘yung puwede mong i-look forward, too. Also, since for a time, naging Baler ang fave place ko, sobrang similar din silang 2 places tapos less traffic and iwas Sierra Madre zigag pa. May OK na peanut butter na homemade, pako salad, decent food, surf spots in the nearby Real, may spelunking sa Cavinti, camp out sa Caliraya, hiking sa big ass waterfalls na nilampasan pa Mother Falls ng Baler. Also, may spelunking (Cavinti), art scene (Paete/San Pablo),local fashion scene (Lumban/Liliw na puwede tumapat sa Vinta Gallery fashion) and syempreee, biking sa kung anong trip mong ride –pabebe sa gedli ng bundok hanggang Elbi; or yung basagan ng tuhod at pagka-broken inside na shit naman sa life sa ahon sa Caliraya hanggang Pililia. Dad tried pa ‘yung Pingas at nag-compare notes pa sa rides ni IanHow and company. LOLOLOL. So, Laguna, why not? -Tipid gas and toll lalo ngayon men, sobrang hassle na punta sa Liwa x Subic x Iba lagalag kasi sobrang mahal ng toll kahit malaki sahod mo HAHAHAHHA -Daming kakainan sa daanan -Mura buko and super fresh ng malauhog -May masarap na bibingka na freshly made cooked sa uling below and above it; may free unli buko juice pa saka sustainable bayong estetik packaging -Sobrang daming falls na iba’t ibang vibe na kaya mong hatawin in 1 day kung hapit sa sched -Food is not as good as Visayan cuisine (as a gata x spicy food fan), but lumalaban lalo sa Aurora’s na heirloom recipes ng family na tubong Laguna -Hiking spots ‘di super duper ganda pero puwede na rin basta gandahan mo lang ‘yung timing para solid sunset ka or may clouds na pakk -Coffee spots medyo hassle lang pero so far, okay naman Muni pero solid ang Gerk’s (Pakil’s secret gem) kasi ‘yung owner is talagang sineseryoso niya ‘yung craft niya; sana ‘yung logo niya and brand storytelling mag-come after LOL -May super love pizza din na for me na I eat only the toppings ‘pag wala ako sa BGC or formal shit, ‘yung crust niya kahit thicc, may sapi (Check out Kato’s or Katos pizza) -Lato + Ensaladang PAKO —actually, eto lang solb na ako. -Carpa dish na hassle hanapin pero ‘pag nahanap mo, kanin is lifeessttt ka, mhie -complete din ang Senakulo (?) ganaps dito sa sleepy town ng lola ko so I grew up with nightmares featuring penitensiya, literal pako sa cross ‘yung tao, badass prusisyon ng saints line up; then may malayong lola pa kami na meron lifesize dead Jesus sa house. Shet. Kidding aside, kung fan ka nito, you don’t need to go so far from Manila to have your fix -masarap pa rin hangin; may moss pa rin mga puno; may tutubi pa rin; may fireflies minsan -plantita and plantito’s heaven on earth as in!!! Mura and maganda tapos maraming rare na basic lang sa Laguna (LOL) -sarap din ng hot spring (meron isang shabby place sa Lumban na puwede mong pitstop ‘pag gusto mong maiba pero solid talaga siya basta ‘di ka maarte) plus may cold spring for all (Pakil) na napakalamig kahit summer tirik ang araw, again, basta ‘di ka maarte -’yung mga ilog malinaw pa; I remember nung bata kami, inom-inom pa kami sa bukal which is still my water of choice kasi matamis siya; kabog Fiji saka Evian, mhie as in kaya sobrang inis na inis ako ‘pag wala ng mabiling ibang water as an uhaw sa tubig to the point na dami kong water weight but I don’t care na rin talaga -gaganda rin ng mga hidden accoms dito pero syempre long way to go pa tayo pero andyan na sila. Example, dati sa Caliraya as in onti lang meron dun na food choices pero ngayon, opak, kahit sa tabing daan puwede na mag-set up ng camp HAHAAHAHHAH -Cavinti is the newest destination pero need mo ng malakasang car at driving skills kasi nga ‘yung daan ginagawa pa :D. Speaking of which, sure ako, may mala-Mapanuepe dito sa Laguna as in. Or baka gine-gate keep na naman ng mga nagdadamot sa madlang peeps because, ganun talaga mga mhie. HAHAHHAA. NakakaLL vs nakakaLL (Nakakaluwag vs Nakalalayan ng lipunan). So, taradits na ba sa Laguna? All these travel check na check checklist na ‘to na naggawa na namin mostly, Laguna is where my Aries dad’s heart is. Dito siya most alive and at home. When we go biking, dami niyang kwento at hugot sa life. Andito rin first love niya before mom na balo na. HAHAHAHAHA. Sabi ko nga, ituloy na niya ‘yun kasi confident naman akong si mom pa rin ang no. 1 niya kahit magkabalikan sila nung babaeng ‘yun. Or, baka naman, it’s also the universe’s sign na meant to be talaga sila. Syempre, as gaguhan na as old as time, dad said naman na: Takot siya sa mom ko kasi dun pinaka selos ‘yun. HAHAHAHAH. Saka, ayaw na raw niya mag-alaga ng matanda. Dun daw siya sa bente uno para tuloy-tuloy ang happ vibes. Mhie, I kennat. LOL. Also, dad’s chapter is something na for him to really face and process. Nasa sidelines lang ako, ready to be with him and let him go as well. Nagkataon kasi na birthday week niya nga ito so may hall pass na naman si gago. Hahahahahaha. LOL. So far, this weekend has been a good one. Bagal signal, bagal oras, non-stop kain so nabawi na lahat ng no meal or 1x/day meals ko sa Manila, and sobrang nakaka-recalibrate talaga especially come Tuesday onward. Stop. Long weekend muna. Cancel BGC and BGC and beyond muna. Will share soon!!! Sidenote: I don’t hate BGC because of my work ha. I just abhor BGC na sinubukan ko siyang iwasan and muntik na akong mag NO sa job offer because that’s how much I abhor BGC, but sabi nung best friend ko, ‘wag daw akong tanga. HAHAHAHAHA. Second the motion naman si P na tumigil-tigil daw ako sa walang sense kong logic. HAHAHAHAHA. Puwede naman daw akong sumabay sa kanila papasok and pauwi pero sila masusunod sa oras… so, no. Bye. LOL. Kwento ko ‘tong BGShit na ‘to some other time. Kakanood kasi ng Parasite saka Snowpiercer saka Samurai X. LOL.
My dad’s birthday suprise 01 is a heartfelt one. Chunchaba mode kasi kami nung fave tita ko na ka-tag team namin sa lola ko na kunwari nasa roadtrip na sila. Sabi ni dad: Ay, wala talaga sila? Me: Yes. Ano? Hintayin ka nila? Importante ka? Hahahaha. Sabi ni dad: Okaaaayyy. Then si fave tita ko naman, niloko ko na ‘di kami uuwi. Hahahaha. Na-sad daw siya kasi sanay siyang abala sa Holy Week lalo bday ni dad. LOL. Sabi ko, tita, Nuvali x Tags x Bats kami. Syempre, since ‘di naman ako sanay mag-sinungaling talaga, buking agad me. :D Eto yata ang bad side ‘pag masyado kang unfiltered. Hassle mag-roll out ng surprise and need ng may accomplice. Sabi niya okay. Then, punta kami ni dad sa bahay nila fave tita para ibagsak mga summer ootds ng kids and siya na rin. HAHAHAHAH. O di ba? Gagalit pa si dad kasi dami ko raw pa rin damit sa house kahit dami kong pinamimigay. LOL. E hello, most of those binili ko not for me but for the kids and my tita so shut up siya. Pag-open ng gate, kanta kids ng happy birthday. HAHAHAHHAHA. Naluha. Walang palag. Sabi ni dad, shaky voice: Akala ko wala na kayo. Hahahahaha. Naiyak din fave tita ko: Hinintay ka namin, aba. Hahahaha. Me: Bayaaann. Clingy? Hahaha. Kakakita nyo lang a. ‘Di kayo nagsasawa sa isa’t isa? LOL. But, so far, food coma x Tamagochi baby is slaying. Jusq. Pero, gusto ko pa rin ‘yung luto ko saka nung lola ko sa mom side na walang habas sa linamnam. Can’t wait to go back to Manila to have my grand grocery time and cooking time. Another little bday surprise for my dad is coming this Easter Sunday! Naghanda na siya kasi, nakabukas daw phone ko tapos nakita niya. Then nacurious siya and binasa message ko. FUCK. Napaka chizmozo neto pero ‘di naman siya nagbabasa ng phone ko kaya nastress ako na alam niya na sino invited. Magaling kasi siya mag-memorize. Sabi niya, alam ko na saan tayo punta. HAHAHAHAHAHA. Naiiyak na ako sa galit kasi invasion of privacy saka ang dami kong ni-adjust para sa attendance check nung small party niya as an introvert dad. Sabi niya, ewan daw ba niya bakit nga niya ni-open. As in. Alam ko may be too long itong break na ‘to pero kung puwede ko lang sabihin lahat ng behind the scenes and plot twists na dumating last week and this week, mhie. LOL. And those plot twists are not just pabebe ones a. ‘Yung talagang dibdibang prayer na: May my shoulders be able to bear the heavy gone heaviest load kinda thing. Pero, fight tayo. Let’s heal together. Ganerrnnn. Sana rin, pagbalik ko sa Tuesday, ‘di ko naman gusto ng easy, but sana, worthwhile lahat-lahat kasi I really need a distraction para makawala sa mga plot twist ng Taurus szn. :D Hype kang Taurus szn ka. Mag-out of Manila na lang talaga ako all weekends of May para makalma ako. And also, this Taurus szn, sana mag-pass with flying colors na ako na ‘di na ako mag-spiral ng malala. ‘Yun lang naman talaga need and want ko sa May-June e. As in, apaka simpleng please, ayoko na magkasakit, ayoko na magspiral, ayoko ng mapunta na naman ako sa deep, dark, rabbit hole. Ganernnnn. Kbye.

SG, Japan, HK top int’l travel destinations for Filipinos, says travel app Klook
Tumblr media
According to a consumer trends survey conducted by travel site Klook, Singapore (HG), Japan, and Hong Kong (HK) are the favored overseas destinations for Filipinos due to proximity and visa exemptions. Klook reported that compared to February 2019, app downloads were up 22% in February 2023. The fourth quarter of 2022 saw a 62% increase in bookings over the previous quarter. When compared to pre-pandemic levels, monthly reservations are expected to rise by 27% by the end of the year, according to Michelle Ho, general manager for Klook in the Philippines and Thailand. This growth will be driven by both domestic and international travel. At a conference on March 14, she stated, "Locally, the usual suspects like Manila Ocean Park, Sky Ranch Tagaytay, and Boracay packages would continue to push the development. In order to better digitalize local tourism and promote recovery, Klook also announced that it would be stepping up some of its more recent initiatives to focus on emerging locations in addition to well-known ones. Klook Pass is an all-in-one digital pass that bundles together activities like island hopping, spa appointments, and hotel stays for a price that is around 30 to 40% less than when bought separately. It was first introduced during the pandemic and is currently only accessible in Boracay and Cebu. Ms. Ho also stated that the platform intended to create more pass kinds, such as a family pass, a foodie pass, and a pass for visits outside of those two cities. She said that Klook currently offers access to 21 cities in the Philippines, up from less than 12 places before the pandemic. "There's a lot we can do with the technology, and we intend to ratchet it up for the year to come," she said. They intend to develop secondary destinations like La Union, Baguio, Batangas, Iloilo, and Bacolod rather than focusing heavily on excursions and attractions. The top destination at the time, according to Ms. Ho, was Boracay. However, she added, "because of the pandemic, we want to accelerate domestic travel through other destinations too." Back then, Ms. Ho said, "our mindset was going for destinations with potential for domestic and inbound travelers like Koreans and Chinese." The newest product from Klook, Klook Hotels, also includes hotel stays so that customers can conveniently reserve their rooms for a trip. Ulla Rosanne K. Sy, head of marketing at Klook Philippines, said that it will be followed by Klook Stay Plus, which will debut this year and allow hotel rooms to be combined with meals and activities. Ms. Sy stated, "We want to push this to complement our major business, which is tours and attractions. According to Klook's survey, 87% of Filipinos are keen to travel. According to platform statistics, domestic destination reservations increased by 87% in November 2022 compared to the same month in 2019. Also, respondents stated that they prefer lengthier holidays of approximately six to nine days when traveling abroad (44%). Three to five-day stays come next (40%), then stays lasting ten days or longer (38%), and finally stays lasting one to two days (15%). Ms. Ho attributed the willingness to travel more and for longer to the increased access Filipinos have to travelling. Since more people are becoming tech-literate, travel has become even more accessible to customers, and according to her, this digital change is significantly accelerating the expansion of tourism in the area.   Read the full article

Articles on Igorot Illustrative work
Found an article about Tor Saguds and his purpose of illustrating a book introducing the Igorots and their culture. His book is entitled 'Igorotak' which translates to 'Igorot Ako' in Tagalog, meaning I am Igorot in English.
Not only was it Tor's goal to showcase the Igorot culture in a visual manner for easier understanding but also was a response to the misconceptions about the Igorot people. According to Tor sagud in the article, he says that there have been misconceptions about Igroots, some have depicted Igorots as "pagans, barbarians or cannibals, which, of course, they are not." “In fact, they're civilized and kinship oriented,” he adds.
As I was trying to look for other designers that may have created work centred around Igorots, I came across this story book that had. a similar visual tone to Tor Sagud. It may come in handy if I draw people for the cards or on the packaging.

💡 DID YOU KNOW?
China is the world's largest producer and consumer of plastic.
About 60 million tonnes of plastic waste was produced by the country in the year 2020 alone and consumes at least one-fifth of the world's plastic (making them the largest importer of plastics). The government took a step and pushed to fully eliminate the unreasonable use of plastic in all marketplaces as packaging by 2025.
What is Waste Management?
Waste management is the process or strategy of disposing, reducing, reusing, and preventing waste pollution. It benefits the people and environment as it not only gives livelihood but also prevents the rise of waste pollution in different areas in the countries globally mainly caused by urbanization and industrialization. Solid waste pollution means waste created by humans that have been dumped in the environment. Solid wastes contaminate the environment as it is frequently seen in the ocean, near the coast, and on land.
Waste Management in the Philippines
In the Philippines, the enactment of Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management of 2000 mandates waste segregation at the barangay level and local government units have to enforce the law. To follow this enactment, local governments create project programs such as segregation, scheduled waste collection, and recycling.
In Baguio City, Bigay Dangal sa Kabuhayan (BIDAKA) program emphasizes giving livelihood to residents and recycling waste materials turning into high-quality and practical products like school bags, money bags, and other products.
In Pasig City, the local government has a partnership with Unilever launching the Walastik na Pasig program. Pasigueños are urged to gather and clean sachets, plastic bags, and other single-use packaging to participate. Those who drop off their properly sorted waste in authorized Walastik junk stores will receive an equivalent cash incentive per kilogram contributed.
The Quezon City government has established a game application called QC BasuHERO—developed by the Department of Sanitation and Cleanup Works of Quezon City (DSQC) that aims to entertain and educate regarding the differences between biodegradable, non-biodegradable, recyclables, bulky wastes and special wastes. A house-to-house recyclables trading activity under the QC BasuHERO was done collecting a total of 4,756 kg in two subdivisions.
💡 DID YOU KNOW?
Bubble wrap takes 10 to 1,000 years to decompose.
Oftentimes, items bought online or parcels on e-commerce sites like Shopee and Lazada are in bubble wrap. The main function of bubble wrap is to protect the item and prevent it from being damaged during shipping processes. However, its prevalent use adds up to plastic pollution as it is non-biodegradable. Although it can be recycled, it takes more effort and takes 10 to 1,000 years to decompose.
According to Win Gatchalian (2020), the average Filipino adult produces between two to three times their own body weight in trash over the course of a single year. Our habits of consumption and production have a direct impact on the quantity of garbage we produce. The difficulty arises from the large volume of goods that are introduced and purchased on the market. A rise in the proportion of one-person families in a household has an impact on how much garbage is produced. The daily use of shampoo in a sachet, drinking cola from plastic and its partner straw, a parcel from the online market, and such that we didn’t even notice. Even if we see the full garbage bag, you won’t even realize that half of it is recyclable and you would not bother. You are most likely disgusted by it because it is mixed waste—not segregated.
As a result, despite the law enactment, organizations, and programs, solid segregation remains a challenge in the country, especially in urbanized areas. The major thing is that people do not see the essence of waste management. Many become after only the exchange of their trash. For example, students are tasked to contribute recycled plastic bottles and those who will participate will receive an addition to their grades. Then, some students will buy plastic bottles in the junk shop just to receive the benefit. Similar to people in the community contributing their segregated wastes in exchange for money. However, without the incentives, the programs are none to people. This adds up to many reasons why wastes are still part of the global challenges.
Impact of COVID-19 on Waste Pollution and Management
In the Philippines, one of the earliest controversial news in 2022 is about the piling medical waste in one of the hospitals in Quezon province. Due to many complaints received and worries of residents nearby, hazardous waste have called the attention of the local government and media. Following the news, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) collects 1,000 metric tons of medical waste equivalent to 166 trucks daily. Apart from regular waste from hospitals, medical wastes also include the used personal protective equipment (PPE) of medical workers, used needles and syringes, contaminated tools, and swabs. Hence, the risk of health increases due to viruses that could be transmitted from contaminated waste to people.
In the peak of COVID-19 in different parts of the Philippines, public and private hospitals reached their maximum capacity. This makes people get treated at home with professional supervision. However, it adds to another type of waste classified as special waste at home. Special waste is a solid waste (usually from business companies) that requires special handling due to its specification which is hazardous. In pre-pandemic, Filipino households are guilty of failing to continuously segregate their waste and reduce the use of plastics. This makes the result of the waste management problem not shocking at this time of pandemic.
Not just the virus brought by COVID, but the Earth choking on waste could end human existence due to its various impacts. The so-called new normal lifestyle has changed people and the waste they produced. The masks used daily have become a common waste in Asian countries. Ironic that the mask could save us and has the potential to kill us too. The lockdown and social distancing have led to an increase in home delivery services. The delivery services grow the plastic packaging consumption. And last reality example, the recycling markets have shut down or closed temporarily due to major lockdown and limited access to spaces. This killed the process of slowing down the regulation of increasing waste by collecting recyclable wastes and recycling processes. Countries cannot effectively manage garbage from hospitals and other therapeutic settings without properly integrated solid waste management systems.
💡 DID YOU KNOW?
An estimated 12 million plastics are used in the Shopee 12.12 sale.
In the year 2020, Shopee celebrated its record-breaking sale on December 12 (known as 12.12) with 12 million items sold in the first 24 minutes. This draws the estimation of more than 12 million plastic waste from e-commerce being used as the packaging for sold items. Despite the astounding and unsustainable use of plastic packaging, there is no available public data that depicts how much waste these companies use and produce. On the other hand, China is the Philippines’ top trading partner, export market destination, and import source in 2019. Hence, e-commerce trading from China to the Philippines adds up to the country’s plastic waste.
How Can We Help? (Various methods of waste management)
The industry in urban cities is growing as it aims to improve the quality of life of the citizens, which comes with a negative effect as consumption increases, and as a result, a high volume of waste is being released into the environment. This high volume of waste comes with different negative effects on the environment itself, as well as the health of the citizens. With that being said, waste management plays a vital role in handling this environmental crisis. Our lives have also improved due to the continuous evolution in the industry. However, consequences, such as the release of harmful waste into the environment, should also be taken into consideration and must be handled properly and professionally.
The following are the methods for waste management according to the Federal Office for the Environment:
Recycling This method is about reusing already used or consumed products. This method has two types: material recycling and downcycling. Material recycling is about recovering raw materials from waste, while downcycling is producing lower quality material from waste.
Incineration Thermal treatment is used for wastes that are combustible. The heat from the process will further be used in generating electricity and heat while waste with low levels of contaminants may be used in industrial plants
Chemical-physical and biological treatment Its objective is to remove the pollutants from the waste where the pollutants will be disposed of in a concentrated form and will be used in accordance with its suitable purpose.
Landfills After the process of waste incineration, the residues and waste that cannot be used for material recycling or thermal treatment will be deposited in landfills in accordance with the legal aspects. However, wastes that are not suitable for the said process will undergo pre-treatment.
Collection and logistics The tasks in waste management sectors include waste collection at source, which involves industry, commerce, and households; intermediate storage, and handover to waste disposal operations. In handling hazardous waste, the Ordinance on Movements of Waste states that the handover of these materials must always be documented.
💡 KNOW & SUPPORT
Aside from participation and cooperation in waste management, Filipinos have contributed steps in business promoting zero waste, reducing the use of plastic, and recycling. There is greater importance in knowing the available local businesses that aim to eradicate waste pollution and the unsustainability use of plastics. As a consumer, part of our contribution is recognizing the eco-friendly lifestyle and supporting its concept. The following are examples of companies and businesses that we should be hugging.
Envirotech Waste Recycling Inc. This is a recycling company owned by Winchester O. Lemen that has currently 5 plants (Zambales, Nueva Ecija, Surigao Del Norte, Davao City, and Koronadal City) all over the Philippines. This company aims to reduce the global problem of plastic waste by recycling and turning them into beneficial products.
Sultry Cosmetics This local brand offers eco-friendly made lip balms in 8 shades and comes in big (JumboBalm) and small (BabyBalm) sizes. They claimed to be handmade, made with 100% natural ingredients, and placed in eco-friendly tubes. For further information check their available pages on Facebook, Instagram, Shopee, and TikTok.
Human Nature You've probably heard about Human Nature as they are widely distributed in many online stores, physical stores, and groceries nationwide. Since 2008 they have been producing natural personal care and cosmetic products, known as pro-Filipino, pro-Philippines, and pro-environment. A portion of your purchase is donated to Gawad Kalinga and other charities that support underprivileged Filipino communities.
The Eco Shift Available in Shopee and selected stores at Alabang, BGC, Makati and Quezon City. The Eco Shift has made an identity as one of the eco-friendly local businesses with a mission to help people shift from plastic use to eco-friendly options. The Eco Shift products claimed to be handmade, natural, plastic-free, vegan, cruelty-free and made in the Philippines.
Importance of Waste Management
The Idea of Waste Management
Tumblr media
The increasing amount of waste worldwide has been a problem for humanity since the invention of plastics and other indestructible materials. As we speak, the average waste that is being generated in the world was recorded to be at rate of 2.24 billion tonnes. This means that the world has been producing more and more waste as we go along with human development and progress. As per the record, an average person produces a carbon footprint of 0.79 kilograms per day. This issue is so urgent that there are already scientific activists that go out on the streets to petition for a better living society.
Tumblr media
Regarding this matter, the said activist voices the importance of having refined waste management solutions all across every country in the world. Some countries deploy waste management programs that include segregation and recycling of waste that can still be used. There are also countries that employ laws against littering and push their countrymen to have a better waste management plan at home. Waste management is the process of proper waste disposal and monitoring of waste materials. This being said, waste management is an  important tool to at least reduce the waste count of the world. This may also include regular transport and collection of waste, recycling, and processing of the disposal of the said garbage.
In the Philippines, the government passed a law regarding the importance of waste management processes. This law is called Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, which provides the country with a systematic, comprehensive, and ecological waste management program to ensure the safety and protection of public health and the environment. This is for the efforts of social justice and health assurance against waste-induced diseases and further health hazards.
Moreover, the country is said to be one of the biggest contributors to plastic waste all across the globe. With this, the government encourages the country to always perform the 3 R's, or REUSE, REDUCE, and RECYCLE campaigns. This campaign is for the reduction of plastic and non-biodegradable waste. production in the country. There are also efforts to put up some segregation bins in order for the community to classify their waste and know what to recycle and what to dispose of the right way.
Tumblr media
The city government of Metro Manila once had a program intended for the betterment of the city’s waste management system. The city government provided three-color bins that will be used for the segregation of waste in every street and household. The said colors will classify which will be the wastes as biodegradable wastes, wastes that are classified to be decomposed under the landfills or those that are non-biodegradable, and those that are classified to be recyclable such as plastics, cans, and papers.
These combined efforts, along with the efforts of every household in the country, can make a difference in waste management. The thing about waste management is that it does not aim to reduce the production of waste, as this could not be avoided; rather, waste management aims to be able to manage the waste that is being produced by households and somehow reduce the possible piling of this waste.

Habits I Actually Did
Out of  the items/activities/ways/habits listed in The Guardian’s 100 ways to slightly improve your life without really trying article, let’s see what I’ve actually done over there since... Well, I just want to see what I’ve done. At least since last year.
Let’s go!
2 On the fence about a purchase? Wait 72 hours before you buy it. - Well, this is more of the contemplation over whether or not it’s worth spending any money over it.
4 Bring fruit to work. Bring fruit to bed! - This is more convenient that buying biscuits on stores on a cold night when I decided to stay up late.
13 Feeling sluggish at work? Try the Pomodoro technique: 25 minutes on, five-minute break, and repeat. - I’ve tried this a lot of times over the last year, especially when I have to work on so many pending writings.
16 Set aside 10 minutes a day to do something you really enjoy – be it reading a book or playing Halo. - The maximum had been 20 minutes... before they decided to call me again to do some errands and this and that. You know what I mean, right?
18 Reuse all plastic bags – even bread bags. Much of the packaging you can’t reuse can be taken to larger branches of supermarkets for recycling. - We were limited in plastic bags that we can use ever since eco-bags were in the roll here. So yeah, every plastic bag that can be reused is important.
22 Laugh shamelessly at your own jokes. - As weird as it would appear, I’m only doing this when I have my alone time.
23 It might sound obvious, but a pint of water before bed after a big night avoids a clanger of a hanger. - Not always, but I managed to do this for nights -- even if it doesn’t happen every night.
24 Start a Saturday morning with some classical music – it sets the tone for a calm weekend. - Well, this is more of a way for me to set the mood so that I could write better right after.
25 Look closely. - Literally and metaphorically, yes. I did this for several times because I have to analyze some of them. As weird as it sounds.
27 If possible, take the stairs. - This is more because I like to walk. And a lot of areas here in Baguio uses stairs instead of just a straight road or path or something.
30 Be polite to rude strangers – it’s oddly thrilling. - Well, this was hard, but I managed. But I’d rather not talking to them and would just choose to avoid them in order to avoid trouble. It’s better and it’s quieter for my sanity.
32 Connect with nature: stand outside barefoot for a few minutes – even when it’s cold. - Done this a lot, since I tend to forget wearing slippers, anyway. Hahaha!
42 Don’t have Twitter on your phone. - I don’t have Twitter or any other SNS apps on my phone for about a year already.
44 Try taking a cold shower (30 seconds to two minutes) before your hot one. It’s good for your health – both physical and mental. - I’ve been doing this for quite a while now, honestly, than boil some water since... I’m impatient in waiting for the water to boil, anyway. And yes, even if the temperature here had already dropped to 10 degrees Celsius and below.
45 Text to say thank you. - I mean, it’s manners, right? Especially when they did something to help you.
48 Buy secondhand. - Did this around the time I was looking for heels that I’d be wearing for my younger sister’s wedding. I don’t have enough money at the time, so... you know the gist.
49 Buy in person! - Same as # 48. I mean, I have to. I’m the one who has to choose the design.
52 Say hello to your neighbours. - Done this to some of them since not all actually deserved it, in my opinion.
66 Don’t save things for “best”. Wear them – enjoy them. - And enjoy them I did.
67 Sing! - I do this a lot... for a reason, of course. And when I’m alone.
74 Respect your youngers. - Also doing this even when talking to them online.
79 Ignore the algorithm – listen to music outside your usual taste. - Did this a few times and somehow, I liked how I managed to find songs that I’d want to listen to, even if it’s not my usual taste of music.
84 Handwash that thing you’ve never cleaned. - I never cleaned it because I actually forgot about it. I know, my bad. Sorry.
85 Don’t get a pet/do get a pet. - The bold one is actually my choice. But my mom actually got three.
86 Nap. - I mean, I ended up having naps before I could even stop myself. Seriously.
87 Learn how to breathe deeply: in through the nose, out through the mouth, making the exhale longer than the inhale. - This was hard, but I was able to do it a few times.
89 Politely decline invitations if you don’t want to go. - Actually, I decline invitations when I really have no drive or desire to go anywhere except my room.
93 Do that one thing you’ve been putting off. - Folding my clothes in my cabinet. Finally! And it’s been a long while since I started contemplating on doing this.
96 Keep a book in your bag to avoid the temptation to doomscroll. - Been doing this since I don’t want to complain on the fact that the line was long or the wait was long. And I have reasons not to look at people. Hehe!
97 Listen to the albums you loved as a teenager. - They’re still cute, in my opinion. And they do give off nostalgic emotions in me.

surveys by lets-make-surveys
1 - Who was the last person to knock on your door? Were they there to see you? Nina usually knocks briefly in the evening to let me know it’s time for dinner. Other than my ex in the past, I don’t let anyone stay in my room for long. Knocking and peeking into my room is enough.
2 - Have you left the house yet today? If not, do you have plans to leave the house later on? No, as it’s only 10 in the morning and I don’t really have a reason to be out somewhere this early. I might go out to buy presents for more relatives, but that’s only if I feel productive enough today. We’ll see.
3 - What’s your favourite brand of chocolate? What type of chocolate bar from that brand is your favourite? The older I get the more I feel like gagging from the idea of chocolate bars lol; they’re all just so sweet. These days my top three would be Hershey’s cookies and cream bar, Whittaker’s chocolate peanut butter bar, and Twix bars. I also love Reese’s, but they aren’t bars.
4 - Have you ever met someone in person who you first met on the internet? Do you have plans to do that anytime soon? Yes, I’ve done this before and I’ve recounted the stories on here multiple times. As for the second question, yeah I technically do? I’ve only met my workmates online so far, so I’m constantly looking forward to the opportunity to finally meet them all in real life.
5 - What was the last thing you used a blender for? I’ve never used a blender. We don’t even own a blender.
6 - Have you ever got into an argument with a stranger on social media? Do you remember what it was about? Yeah, but I don’t even remember what it was about anymore...I do know it was this year, and the person deleted the comment that I replied to not long after.
7 - When was the last time you cracked your joints? Is that something you do often? Now that you reminded me, I just did. I do it at least once a day, whenever my fingers start to feel tight and tense.
8 - What time is it right now? If you weren’t doing a survey, what else would you be doing right now? It is 1:52 PM. I’d be heading to the mall to buy more presents, but I don’t feel like getting out of bed yet. I’d also do embroidery, but my online orders are taking a while to arrive :( My online shopping app says I'll be getting them by Jan 3rd, but the shipping tracker says it’s already being shipped from China to here so I’m looking forward to receiving it this week. I hope that’s the case; otherwise it’ll miss the point of being my hobby this Christmas break.
9 - If you had ten minutes to run around an empty supermarket and fill your trolley for free, what’s the first aisle you’d go for? The fancy meat/fish section. Then I’d go to the condiments/spice section, then frozen food, then chips.
10 - Aside from Tumblr, what websites do you visit the most and why? YouTube, because I find videos a soothing distraction; Twitter to keep me updated on local and international news; Reddit for quirky posts; and Wikipedia so I can continue learning trivia I’ll never have to use but want to gain anyway.
11 - Has COVID had any impact on your Christmas plans this year? What’s going to change or be different to normal? My dad is home for Christmas this year, which is one silver lining from Covid. But my relatives living abroad who usually fly back to the Philippines for the holidays obviously won’t be able to this year, so we’re not gonna have a packed family reunion like we normally do. Everything else is the same, but I think the biggest thing about this whole thing is that I can barely feel Christmas coming this year. I think it’s going to feel like such a plain Friday this week; and that makes me a little sad.
12 - What’s your favourite flavour of cake? Are you any good at making that kind of cake? My favorite flavor is chocolate, but my favorite kind of cake (which I enjoy a lot more than general chocolate cake) is cheesecake. I cannot make either, nor can I bake at all.
13 - Do you prefer sweet or sour candy? Sweet. I hate any sour foods with a passion lol especially sour candy; it is my absolute least favorite taste. I don’t find anything enjoyable or fulfilling about it.
14 - What colour is your favourite fruit? Is this a fruit you eat often? Already made my feelings for fruit clear on this blog, haha.
15 - Is your favourite restaurant an independent place or a chain? What is it that you love about it so much? It’s a chain, like most popular restaurants here. Independent places are a little hard to come by, to be honest. They make the best katsu I’ve ever had; and I also like that despite being a chain restaurant, the ambience is still quite sophisticated and date-friendly so I always feel like I’m treating myself whenever I eat there.
16 - Are you genuinely a fan of Starbucks or do you think it’s all hype? I personally enjoy everything about Starbucks. I like their coffees, their Frappes, the ambience in their coffee shops, their playlists, and their line-up of mugs and tumblers. I’ve always felt right at home in their shops and out of all the cafés I’ve been to, it’s always their baristas that have been the nicest.
17 - Do you own a Christmas jumper? What design/pattern does it have on it? No, I don’t.
18 - What’s your favourite fit/style of jeans? I was obsessed with mom jeans throughout 2020.
19 - What was the last non-essential item you spent money on? Overpriced coffee and a sandwich.
20 - Are you currently under any COVID-related restrictions where you live? Are people generally following the rules? Public places are super strict with requiring everyone to wear a face shield and face mask; before entering any establishment, people’s temperatures are taken and everyone’s also required to take a contact tracing form. Anyone under the age of 21 still isn’t allowed to go out for the most part, though I think there are some exceptions now because I see kids younger than me already going on out-of-town trips again. Some places that are big on tourism like Sagada, Batanes, and Baguio are still closed off from the public; those that have since reopened, like Boracay, follow strict protocol and everyone going there is required to undergo a swab test. Everyday Filipinos follow the rules; it’s the politicians and police force who don’t, which feels disgusting to say.
21 - What did you last leave the room you’re in to do? A package arrived for me so I had to pay for it. It was the phone case I ordered for my cousin.
22 - Have you ever read any self-help books? Did you find them useful? No. I don’t really believe in that genre, so I never felt pulled to buy a book.
23 - What’s your favourite programme on the Food Network (if you watch it)? If you don’t get that channel, what’s your favourite food/cookery show in general? All things Gordon Ramsay, man. MasterChef, Hell’s Kitchen, and Kitchen Nightmares are all *chef’s kiss* The Great British Bake Off is also great and something I like watching when I want to wind down :)
24 - Do you still watch cartoons? From time to time.
25 - Who do you know with the most number of siblings? Would you ever want to live in a huge family? My grandpa was one of nine siblings, if I’m not mistaken. I’m not sure if I know a bigger set than that. Unless my family was filthy rich, I would not want to have such a big immediate family.
26 - Are you a fan of garlic bread? Sure. I tend to ask for others’ too, heh.
27 - Do you own any personalised clothing? What’s the reason for getting it? No, not a fan. Two years ago we had a huge family reunion on my dad’s side and we had to wear these cheesy shirts that said “[Last Name] Reunion” with some cheesy motto at the bottom. My parents hated it, which made me feel better about my own feelings about the shirt lol.
28 - Is anyone else in the same room as you right now? What is that person up to? No, it’s just me here.
29 - What colours are you wearing right now? Does your wardrobe contain a lot of those colours? White, maroon, and scarlet. I have a lot of white and maroon; not so much of scarlet as I find the color too bold.
30 - Do you like adding condiments to your food? If so, what are some of your favourites? Yes. My food always needs to have soup, condiments, or sauces; otherwise I tend to feel the dish is too dry. I like mayonnaise, banana ketchup, hot sauce, and lechon sauce.
--
1 - What have you been up to so far today? Is that a typical thing for you to do on this particular day of the week? I’ve taken a couple of surveys and started binge-watching segments of my newest Korean reality show discovery, 2 Days 1 Night. The breakout actor from Start-Up and the newest love of my life HAHAHA is a cast member on the current season of 2D1N so I’ve been all over the show today. It’s hilarious; I can hardly believe I’m only discovering the show this late.
2 - Did you get a decent night’s sleep last night? How many hour’s sleep do you consider a decent amount? It was around five hours, which isn’t a lot to me. I usually sleep 7-9 hours these days, but I might wreck my body clock during the holiday break because I want to keep being awake and do the things I haven’t been able to do because of work.
3 - What is one silly thing that really gets on your nerves? Seeing pickles in a burger.
4 - Who was the last person you saw who wasn’t family? What did you guys end up doing together? The friendly Starbucks barista from yesterday; her name was Princess. We didn’t do anything lol, she just took my order and was super friendly about it, and she also gave me the Starbucks planner that I chose to redeem.
5 - Do you prefer hot or cold drinks overall? Cold. I avoid hot drinks now haha. Ever since I had that incident with the takoyaki, I’ve been too scared to let any hot food or drink touch my mouth.
6 - Do you own a decent set of waterproofs? If so, what do you use them for the most? If not, do you think that would be something you’d find useful? I don’t know what this is referring to, and I’m too lazy to Google right now. I’ve only ever known this word as an adjective, whoops.
7 - Do you have any plans for the rest of the day? Take more surveys, and maybe have another cup of coffee. I’ll also have to get started on a daily report I submit for work every weekday morning so that my load will be lighter tomorrow. Our office is technically on shutdown until January 4th, but some clients require a daily report every day and I’ll have to shoulder that with another co-associate. It sucks, but at least it’s the only thing I’ll have to do for the next two weeks.
8 - How often do you get your hair cut? When hairdressers were closed due to COVID, did you try cutting it yourself at home? I only go to the salon once a year, and I already did it this 2020 when I chopped off my hair and got bangs. Yeah, whenever my bangs start to get too long I either ask my mom to trim them or I do so myself.
9 - What did you wear the last time you left the house? Is that different to what you’re wearing at the moment? I walked Cooper half an hour ago and I just stayed in the same clothes I’ve been in all day, which was a tank top underneath an oversized hoodie and a pair of shorts.
10 - Would you rather have a relaxing beach holiday or a more active holiday in the mountains? The beach would be perfect right now, but I think my answer changes every time this is asked and I’m pretty sure I picked mountains the last time HAHAHA. I just realized being in the mountains would give me the same cooped-up feeling I’ve been having from staying at home for such a long time, and it might not be the best and healthiest trip for me...the beach definitely sounds more freeing and therapeutic.
11 - Do you know how to tie a tie? Nah, never learned. I’ve never been good at tying anything up, period.
12 - How old were you when you first had a sleepover at someone’s house? Did you miss home? I was 15 or 16; I’m not entirely sure anymore. Not at all, I was so excited to have been allowed to go to my first sleepover.
13 - How often do you spend time with your extended family? Under normal circumstances, we’d visit my grandma and cousins on my mom’s side once every few months or so. It was pretty regular since they’re just a stone’s throw away. But obviously we’ve since had to drastically cut our get-togethers back, and I’ve only seen them around three times since the beginning of the year. My dad’s family lives pretty far south, so I only get to see them once or twice a year even in pre-Covid days; not much of a difference there.
14 - When you get up in the morning, do you have a set routine? No. I just wake up feeling dread and have no choice but to wait for the weight in my chest to subside.
15 - Do you remember the last time you cried? Were they sad or happy tears? Yesterday in my car, in the mall parking lot. Sad tears.
16 - What do you have planned once you finish this survey? Look for another one. I misseddddd taking surveys and I plan on taking a crap ton of them this Christmas break. I may also be called for dinner, so there’s that.
17 - What was the last thing you cooked? Did you cook from scratch or just heat something up? I dunno if it counts as cooking, but I just made the DIY ramen kit that I received as a Christmas gift from the branch I was originally an intern at. Everything was already prepared in the kit and all I needed to do was boil water for the noodles and prepare the broth. Turned out surprisingly good.
18 - Are you a fan of hot chocolate? Do you like it plain or do you prefer to add things like whipped cream or marshmallows? I love hot chocolate and will order it sometimes, but given my aforementioned fear of hot beverages I always wait for it to considerably cool down hahaha. I like my hot chocolate plain.
19 - What caused your last injury? Cooper’s nails.
20 - How many tattoos and piercings do you have? Do any of them have an interesting story behind them? Just a piercing on each of my earlobes. No interesting stories...yet.
21 - What kind of flowers do you like the best? When was the last time someone bought those for you? I like peonies, though I’m not sure if my ex ever gave me a bouquet that included those.
22 - What’s the smallest thing you’ve ended a relationship over? I’ve only been with one person and I dated her twice, but I was never the one who ended the relationship either time so can’t really answer this.
23 - Would you rather order a starter (appetiser) or a dessert? Or would you be able to manage a full three courses? Three-course meal, pls. I’ve only experienced it once, when my parents treated me to dinner during my cruise gift for my 18th birthday; it was great and every dish was made amazingly well.
24 - How do you get most of your news, if you pay attention to it at all? I catch the evening news every weeknight because we keep the telvision turned on during dinner. I also get to read articles on social media.
25 - Have you or a member of your family been diagnosed with COVID yet? None that I know of, thankfully. It’s always been someone that a relative knows, but so far none of us have gotten it.
26 - Are you a vegetarian? If so, what persuaded you to stop eating meat? If not, is it something you’d ever consider? No. I have been considering it for years, but I truthfully don’t know if I could give up meat.
27 - Do you prefer rice or pasta? Rice.
28 - Is anything you’re wearing a gift? Who bought it for you? No.
29 - What’s the dominant colour in the room you’re in at the moment? I guess white, since my walls are white and that’s the first thing you see when entering my room.
30 - Did you do laundry yet today? If not, do you need to do any before you go to bed? Not my chore to do, but it was already done a few days ago.
