I think James Lee finds a woman interesting when she's mainly focused on her studies and goals in life yet is someone fun and chill to hang with. I also headcannon that James likes teasing the woman he likes especially when she get easily agitated lol.

If you met him in his new identity and if you're his manager, well I congratulate you! But hold on, that doesn't mean that even if you're with him off cam it mean that he likes you automatically. He's usually attentive and focused about his work and he doesn't have time with his love life if he even has one 😒. It still depends if he doesn't mind your presence though! Just kidding lol (I'm still saying the truth). ANYWAYSSS, I bet the moment Yoojin decides to recruit a new member, every single one of them will be spying and keeping an eye on you lol. This may sound uncomfortable but I guess it's just them being curious about your behavior especially if you're the helpful type. They usually do illegal activities and I guess some of them lost some type of empathy or just plain closeted about their feelings. So it's really unusual for them to be approached by a "normal" person. They might think that you are here to bring their crew down. But after some adjustments and collaboration, you and the others will get along very well.

Yoojin and Baek Hangyul! might keep an eye on you though despite working with him even for a very long time. He knows that your kindness and loyalty are factors why he chose to keep you as his personal secretary if you asked me. But that doesn't mean that you're not mindful with your surroundings. He knows that what he's doing is wrong but he couldn't care less as long as his businesses are going well. If you keep bringing this topic up for him to stop, this may cause a ruckus and a toxic connection between the two of you. He knows that you're generous enough to help him out. But if we're going to be realistic here, he might use and abuse that strength and adornment of yours and even gaslighting you at times. Shutting your mouth off may be the only solution that you can think of to make him change his mind but trust me it's not going to work. So it's better if you stay away from him a bit :/...

Yuseong, Doo Lee, Sinu Han, Vivi and Ryuhei! are the complete opposite though! They might be intimidating at first glance but they're just your typical homies just chilling in their own little world. For Yuseong, he might get attracted to you especially if you dress well and if you're really good at babysitting. This adoration of his is simply innocent and just a simple crush since as we see he's not really emotionally mature (probably because of unmentioned trauma but who knows). The freckled boy is very fond with playing his toys and dolls so it will be a great time to play with him especially on his breaks! He also likes it when you cook him delicious meals and give him candies as presents! Doo Lee, Vivi and Ryuhei are really good at gambling and talking about funny shit like memes so if you're the crackheaded woman at times you're really going to enjoy their company (you got to remind them to focus on duty hours though you don't want the four of you to get whooped). Sinu is also the friendly type of guy so befriending him out of pure curiosity is no problem either and he's the type to say cheesy pick up lines and corny memes at times as a method to try to befriend him since he's secretly feeling lonely at times (you got to keep your eyes of about Mitsuki though :/)

Cheon Taejin, Samuel Seo, Magami Kenta, Sato Kazuma, Xiaoleoung, and Mitsuki! are the definition of intimidating inside out. They might give you a glare or a few couple stares in there just to check out if you're focusing on your work. If you're the type to initiate conversations it will be hella weird with them lol. They will be responding with a few "hms" or "okay" there and then especially if they're not interested. They wouldn't really scare you off if you're not too much of a bothersome.

What it's like working with the both of them?

If Yoojin and DG both have feelings for you, there might be a heated conversations at times with those goofy ass smiles (you got to tell them to chill out though since it can get physical if you both don't stop them DG is going to win even Yoojin tries lol).

They might flex there and then about their accomplishments and they will embarrass each other in a bad way when they are in front of you. DG will keep telling Yoojin how of a failure he was to let Daniel Park bring down the other affiliates while Yoojin will keep roasting DG of how he's a p*ssy for running away from his crimes. It's so funny if you're just there in those situations Istg💀.

They might flirt too if you asked me just to see your and each one's reactions since they feel likes it's a competition between the both of them and you're the trophy (not really promoting this behavior in real life :/). But they will stop though once you get uncomfortable about the atmosphere around them.

The three of you will be that chaotic love triangle when Yoojin and DG acts like siblings fighting each other for the same girl (I DON'T SHIP THESE TWO I JUST THINK IT'S A FUNNY IDEA. baekhyun has been ignoring you for the last hour, and it was starting to annoy you. he’s been playing video games since you got back to his dorm, and it wasn’t a problem until he simply stopped paying attention to you. so you did what any person might do, and started playing on your phone, tapping away at the screen as you text friends or comment on posts.

but he really hadn’t been ignoring you completely. every time you would shift next to him, he’d glance over and check on you. and it was truly hard to ignore you because he loved you too much, and the tapping of your nails on your screen was getting hard to dismiss.

“who are you texting?” he asks, looking up from the computer for a brief second. when you don’t respond, he gently hits your leg. “who are you texting?” he repeats, looking at you longer than he did the first time.

“my ex,” you say, not looking up at him. bakehyun freezes next to you, his fingers hovering over the keyboard. you bite back a smirk, waiting for him to respond. baekhyun opens his mouth to ask why, until it dawns on him—you don’t have an ex, he’s your one and only.

baekhyun snatches your phone out of your hand and holds it behind him. “baek!” you groan, sitting up and reaching for it. you glare at him and he smiles at you.

“tell your ex boyfriend that you’re busy with your current boyfriend,” he says, setting your phone on his desk. he disregards his game and leans down to kiss you, his hands holding onto the sides of your face.

baekhyun kisses you slowly, holding you close. you hold onto his wrists, melting into him and the bed, pulling him on top of you. “can you get off the game?” you ask, running a hand through his hair.

“yes, if it keeps your ex away,” he teases, kissing your nose and making you giggle.

uneasiness is the word for Queen of Tears. This show makes me uneasy. I felt it in the first episodes where a group of men lament having to cook for the Hong's family memorial service (cooking! horror!), I felt it when Soo-cheol opened his big mouth to call Africa barbaric, and I'm still feeling it 6 eps in while Hae-in cavorts around Germany with her lousy husband.

I haven't dropped the show yet because I find it entertaining, and I have no self-discipline. What I like: Kim Ji-won as Hong Hae-in. The ensemble cast is big and probably expensive, but the money is paying off. They're all individually strong performers, and they work off each other expertly. I like the Hong family, and I like their soon-to-be usurpers. I like how the camera moves - I like how funny the writing can be. I love the soundtrack. Hae-in's fake illness is one of the more compelling fake illnesses in k-dramas. I think everything around her character is sharply drawn, and most of that lies in Kim Ji-won's performance, who knows exactly how to ride that fine line of irony and earnestness. She knows Hae-in is out of touch and vain, and plays those moment with subtle self-riducule, but she also acknowledges that Hae-in is trying, if not necessarily successfully, to be a better person.

Her husband though - lol. Baek Hyun-woo starts out as someone with a degree of responsibility and morality that his in-laws severely lack. Much of the first episodes is playing up his alienation as a decent, modest middle-class lawyer who marries Hae-in, a woman from a vastly rich family, and learns quickly that the companionship and support he thought he'd receive from her isn't there. He decides to get a divorce after he finds out that his wife didn't put him in her will - the last straw, and ultimate proof that she no longer loves him. Fair enough, thought I. Then he finds out his wife is dying. His reaction: stash away the divorce papers and lover her up so bad she'll fall for him again and put him in her will. Okay...interesting! thought I. It was a refreshing turn in his character, having our nice lead be as self-interested and petty as the in-laws he looked down on. And at that point, the writing was vaguely, vaguely aware that he was a prick for it. But it also gave him an out - see, it wasn't really Hyun-woo's idea, but his friend's, whispering in his ear like Lady Macbeth to topple the faithful King Duncan, so y'know, this conniving isn't really Soo-hyun's nature. He's definitely not that kind of guy.

The funny thing is that Hyun-woo's selfishness is the only believable thing about him. Early on, it's hammered in that working for this family is eating up at his sense of justice, but there's no underlying reason or conviction as to why or where he has this sense of justic from. I can believe more that he is a deeply materialistic man, who says the "moral" thing, but ultimatley still cares about status and money and reputation. After all, the moral compromises he regretted making for his in-laws no longer mattered when he was busy chasing Hae-in's bag lol. And like his ethics, his love for Hae-in feels similarly hollow - when he starts to see her through sun-lit filters and flares with ballads in the back, it all reads like artifice attempting to simulate a sincere falling-back-in-love, and I don't buy it. I don't believe that he's a good man, and I don't believe that he loves Hae-in. I cannot believe that people were harassing Kim Sae-ron, a real woman with a real connection to Kim Soo-hyun, over this pairing. Stand up.

In fact, this show is a lot like Hyun-woo - hollow, saying the "right" things re: wealth, but meaning nothing. The villains are grasping class upstarts. The chaebol family are so dysfunctional and bumbling that they become like children, pitiable and endearing. There's a show in here that's brilliant, and I keep seeing flashes of it because I've seen it in other brilliant shows. An upwardly mobile lawyer marries into a conglomerate, and their corruption chews him up and spits him out - Stranger. A chaebol family whose stupidity and pettiness is genuinely disturbing and suffocating - Secret Love Affair. And if you want to ogle and jeer at rich people, then Mine is as indulgent, as excessive, as voyeuristic (bordering on exploitative) as QOT while still having a moral spine. Of course, those shows had very different writers, different aims and tonal registers to Queen of Tears, which is first and foremost a brassy, sweeping crowdpleaser. But QOT wants us to take it seriously - it wants us to at least believe in the romance that it's selling. And well...I don't know if I can manage that. Personally, I'd have cut Hyun-woo out all together, make Eun-sung/Hae-in and Soo-cheol/Da-hye the main pairings (while keeping Eun-sung and Da-hye as two-faced as they already are), and have the messiness of the plot spill out from that.

I think this is all a sign to watch My Liberation Notes again.

baek kyung is horrible and that's what makes him great.

if you've fallen in love with him uncritically, looked past his toxic actions and chosen to ignore that he's a walking red flag, i am concerned. i hope that's not doing any bad things to your brain. but him being awful is what's so compelling about him. he's a great antagonist for the story he's in.

he's a narrative foil for almost everyone around him.

eun dan-oh knows that yeah, technically she's smarter than the characters who have yet to become self-aware. but she respects their autonomy, however scripted it may be, and treats everyone with kindness. she doesn't see herself as better or more important just because she knows better. baek kyung does. whether it's bravado or pretense or genuine disdain, he treats everyone who hasn't woken up even worse than he did before.

ha-ru is often concerned for eun dan-oh's wellbeing. he's scared for her. her condition could kill her and there's no way for anyone to know when that could happen. he loves her and he understands his place in this is to support her. he's willing to go along with any plan she has to save her own life. baek kyung is also scared. and he's turning that on dan-oh. he's blaming her, even when he seems to be softer about it. he does not know how to express love in a healthy way. when he decides to help, he spends his time pushing the idea of their relationship as a method to save her. no matter how many times she insists that isn't what she wants.

lee do-hwa is the second male lead of secret. he's more or less accepted this, no matter how it may hurt, because he loves his female lead enough to let her go. it's enough to be by her side, however she wants him there. even if she's always on his mind, she doesn't need to be his whole being. baek kyung cannot accept that he is the second male lead of eun dan-oh's life (which is stretching the definition honestly). maybe if he had, they would form a genuine friendship. instead he imposes himself on her relationship and on her life because he cannot cope with the idea that if given the choice, she wouldn't pick the guy who belittles her constantly.

he's an unfortunate example of "hurt people hurt people".

it doesn't matter if he's on stage or in the shadow. baek kyung's home life is always awful. there has to be something uniquely painful about the discovery that your actions, your life, your personhood, were entirely scripted for you, when that's already been your reality for so long anyway. there is a life outside of his life but it's really more of the same. being a fictional character makes sense. he was never allowed to be real. it still hurts.

for baek kyung, hating the manhwaga is just transference. his father has already done enough to prove to him that he's a pawn in someone else's game. he hates this man, he resents the pain he's put him through. but when the stage is set, he also is vying so hard for his father's approval. how much of that emotional dissonance is left when he's back in the shadow?

his life is unfair, he's not alone in that. but he may be the only one who's not being taught how to cope with it. there's a little clique that's formed around the shared self-awareness, and he rarely steps into it. they rarely reach out to pull him in. he probably has few tools to understand how to ask for help. he probably cannot figure out the kind of help he actually needs.

and it doesn't help that the manhwaga instilled him with the core emotions of loneliness and rage. feelings that are hard to overcome without a lot of support. it's so easy for it all to turn to self-hate as he continues to be just wretched to everyone around him. he's asked what makes him act like that when he has the choice not to and he can't answer. he probably can't process that it is a choice. it's one thing for him to be so harmful when he's not in control of his actions, but he can't understand why he's still like that when in the shadow. he doesn't know how to change.

he's not a monster, he's just a kid.

baek kyung does monstrous things. vile, even evil, things. but he is so broken, and confused, and misguided, and hurt. and none of that makes the things he does okay. dan-oh would be within her rights to never forgive him – either universe's version of him – for the things he did to her. but just like his pain can't erase the way he harms people, his actions don't erase the fear in him. if he touches his terminally ill girlfriend's hand for support, that kindness will kill her. it's not true, it's not rational, but it's a very real scar that no one around him has even recognized.

he doesn't really deserve forgiveness. but in the end, he's trying to do the right thing so he can earn it anyway. he makes a choice that is not only about letting go, but about breaking a cycle of violence. he hates his father and the manhwaga for treating him like a tool, he resents his step-family and his schoolmates for ignoring his pain. he uses dan-oh as a tool to vent his ire and frustration, then as a generator of hope that might quell his loneliness. and he hates himself for it. because he knows that it's not right for him to ignore the pain that self-aware dan-oh would be feeling...if he allowed ha-ru to bring her back.

he knows it's not right. he doesn't know how to fix it and still be happy. so he chooses not to be. which is the right choice. it's the selfless choice. it's an unfair choice. because he's just a hurt kid and his childhood friend/arranged fiancee/abuse victim shouldn't be his only ray of hope. she forgives him, she tells him she doesn't see him as the monster he thinks he is, she allows him to express an apology so he can start to heal.

all it takes for him to begin to see a life that he doesn't spend alone and hurt is for his brother to see him. for him to hear from someone close that they see his loneliness, and who he is without it, and they believe he deserves better. they're sorry they didn't help him have something better. all he needed was i see you, i love you, i'm sorry.

baek kyung is a violent, unstable, manipulative asshole.

baek kyung is a hurt, confused, scared child.

he is all of those things, and that is what makes him so fascinating. that is what makes him an excellent sympathetic villain. in a story about regaining autonomy and saving your own life, there could be few better redeemed antagonists than an abused child who learns to stop being abusive.

GOD! EPISODE 13 IS BITTERSWEET, but I think this is by far the episode where like 80-90% of the scenes were happy. So I love it!

📍I knew they'd find nothing in the panic room, it's kinda frustrating but what's new? At least Hyun-woo had a back-up plan to fuck up Eun-seong and I can't wait for him and his mother to rot in jail. But WAIT--hear me out, if Seul-hee finds out that Eun-seong went to Germany to follow Hae-in, this bitch would be livid and since she sees every member of the Hong family as an obstacle, she'll most likely going to do something to eliminate Hae-in. What if Eun-seong sacrifices himself and dies in the process to save her, then Mo Seul-hee will lose her mind and she'd spend the rest of her remaining days locked up in a mental asylum, alone and lonely. I think that would be a perfect ending for her and Eun-seong don't y'all think?

📍Aunt Beom-ja and hubby number 4 moments, Hae-in and Mama Hong slowly rebuilding their relationship, Baek and Hong parents being besties, Soo-cheol continuing to stand up for his family...I appreciate these little family moments so much I just don't want it to end.

📍Team QOT be blessing us with lots and lots of BaekHong moments!!! Ah, I feel so spoiled as a fan, I never considered their divorce as legit, but more like they went back to the way they were...you know, carefree, happy, being so in-love, making great memories. I love that they re-created the honeymoon scene in episode 1, then the first OST to ever be released (The Reasons of my Smiles by BSS) started playing in the background, it felt so nostalgic to me.

📍I also love the fact that Hae-in's parents, especially her mom didn't argue when Hae-in decided to move-in with Hyun-woo in his apartment. It feels like they are finally giving their full support and blessing for BaekHong to become a married couple. Also, those hubby and wifey moments made me smile a lot!

📍But Hyun-woo once again going above and beyond to make Hae-in happy 🥹🥹🥹 hubby really made the "snow fall in October" so wifey could witness it first hand, then hearing his most genuine laugh when Hae-in confessed that he was his first love was just the best. Those scenes were just so good it made me wish that they could stay like that.

📍But of course, those happy moments won't last because well...who says we can have it all? Now, if this was a typical Kdrama and the lead character would be put in Hae-in's situation, normally we could expect the lead character to take the risk and the other lead as well the people on their side would help her remember or perhaps create new memories. However, I do appreciate the fact that Park Ji-eun didn't romanticize that kind of situation but instead gave us the reality of how complicated it is to be in Hae-in's shoes. It's easy to say, "Oh it's fine Hyun-woo's gonna help her remember," and this guy bless his heart would be willing to do that, but what about Hae-in?

As much as I really, really want her to get the surgery, I do understand why she refused after finding out about the possible side effects. It's not just about losing her memories, it's about losing her loved ones. It's so fucking cruel because if she doesn't take the surgery, they'll lose her, if she does then it's the other way around. She could wake up becoming a completely different person, forgetting about how much she loves her family, her husband and it will hurt them really badly. She loves Hyun-woo so much that she doesn't want to lose that love she has for him in exchange for extending her life. If she loses that love, then what's the point of living? I still do hope for some miracle though, because she deserves to live a long life with Hyun-woo.

ANYWAY, Since episode 14 is coming up I am mentally and emotionally preparing myself for a pretty painful episode. Next week is finale week and I hope, I REALLY hope that BaekHong will get a happy ending they both deserve.

Synopsis: Hong Hae-In is a third generation chaebol of the Queens group that married Baek Hyunwoo, son of farmers turned lawyer that works for the group underneath the Hong family. After three years of marriage, Hyunwoo is ready for a divorce, only to find out Hae-In has a disease that gives her only three months left to live. Queen of Tears is about the crisis/hardships of marriage as to what will rekindle them, along with the threat of those who want to get rid of the Hong family.

Overall Main Plot: Rating - 9 out of 10

I think this is one of the kdramas that I would love to rewatch over and over again. I just wanna say that this rating is predominantly due to the actors and their chemistry. I was really invested into the plot and the romance. I really loved the idea of the stereotypical "gender roles" in these dramas being swapped because watching a female lead who is more career driven and a male lead who is more in touch with his emotions was genuinely so refreshing. I was initially worried about how the plot would portray their relationships because a lot of these chaebol dramas are the same; however, I really liked watching the Hong family struggle for a bit and essentially be reliant on the Baek family. There was some genuine character growth that I loved to watch. Not only was I interested in how the romance would play out, but watching these families bond like actual in-laws was really nice, especially since they eventually did come towards the plot and showed a reflection of the characters themselves. As for the plot with the Sol-Hee and Eunseung, I was interested to see how their relationship was playing out, especially as the drama went, they kept turning on one another, which showed how unreliable the alliance was for the group that went against the Hongs. Obviously this is not a 10 out of 10 due to certain things I wished I could have seen.

The Miscarriage - I really wish they had an actual conversation about the miscarriage and patch that part of their relationship together. This was the big thing that drew them apart and I think it would have been beautiful to have that moment for them to directly communicate and address why things went the way that they did. I think if there was something more about this in particular, I would have given it a 10/10.

Moh Seul-Hee's Motivations - maybe it's because I've watched them for so long, she immediately stuck out to me because she felt like she's a part of the antagonist group. I know some people would disagree with me, but I wish we got some actual background from her about what essentially pushed her to do all of this. It was explained away as her wanting better for her son, but then she did not show that consistently. I wish there was just more about her and specifically why she was so comfortable getting rid of him and the complete greed as to why she wanted everything.

Characters: Rating - 10 out of 10

↣ Baek Hyunwoo (played by Kim Soo Hyun) - I want to reiterate that I love these characters, especially this man right here. He was such a consistent character. He was just such a cutie pie and he clearly showed his love for Hae-In. Each time he cried, he CRIED. He was just clearly written by a woman because there was so much love and devotion and he never lost that motivation, especially with the threat of Eunseung. I understood his previous motivations of wanting a divorce, how the family was treating him prior, and then a wife that he didn't feel supported by. My only complaint of him though is that I didn't like him liking the thought of her dying, granted their situation was very particular. But it passed quicker than I thought and, eventually, he came to his senses and began to fight for the love of his life. I genuinely loved his character and I will miss him the most.

↣ Hong Hae-In (played by Kim Jiwon) - first of all, Hong Hae-In is such a QUEEN. Jiwon played her so well; obviously, she was supposed to be very chaebol-esque. I know it's a double standard and all, but I absolutely loved her and how fierce she was in her career. She was clearly a respectable business woman that had goals she was working towards and, honestly, she was very relatable as time went due to her lack of time. I felt so bad for her when she started to space out and her illness started to get to her; I felt even more bad realizing how bad her family dynamics are and she really felt so lonely and she did not stop loving her husband. Obviously, Hyunwoo was different about the situation, but she told him about the illness which counts for a lot I think. I really hate that they took her memory away, but those are writing problems not a character problem.

↣ Yoon Eunseung (played by Park Sunghoon) - Oh. My. God. Park Sunghoon did such an excellent job OF PLAYING SUCH A BITCH. I think this was one love triangle that was not a triangle. From what I observed, there was no one really rooting for him. He was clearly just obsessed with Hae-In and that was due to his mommy issues, which is not his fault but does provide context. Eunseung was so Annoying; I understand why he's important to the plot, but he had me screaming at the screen whenever he showed up like OH BROTHER THIS GUY STINKS. I actually did hate that he ended up dying; I wanted him to suffer behind bars like what he had done to Hyunwoo, but realistically, he wouldn't have been in there long I'm guessing and he would never leave Hae-In alone. I found his background interesting though; he just wanted to be loved and thought Hae-In would give that to him, but she kept showing that she did not like him, even with her damned memory gone. Overall, he was just an interesting case because he was someone you could definitely sympathize with but the way that he acts makes it hard to root for him.

Romance: Rating - 10 out of 10

Romance is real, no notes. Just kidding, but I'm serious. It's funny how I was sobbing and was incredibly invested, only for me to realize that this is not a real man. This is fiction and that's clear from the way that Hyunwoo shows up for Hae-In. Hae-In showed love in her own ways, but let's be real: 1. he was a broken man when he thought she had died in the car 2. he RAN out of the hospital bed to make sure he can rescue his woman and 3. he took a whole bullet for her and continued to work to help protect the Hong family. I love these two so much; they have such great chemistry and their acting was great. I just loved this as a romance, especially since they were rekindling love rather than just starting out and it was nice to see those flashbacks of them when they did initially fall in love.

Secondary Characters/B-Plot: Rating - 8 out of 10

As I previously mentioned, I really loved seeing the families coming together and working together. I think that was the most that Ioved from the secondary plot. The villagers weren't super interesting and there were some plots I did not care about, especially the ones they just threw in on the end, like how Hyunwoo's sister was worried about her husband having an affair, who we haven't even seen on the screen so I was confused for a second. I did really like the love line for BeomJa - I love that she's the one who confessed and made the moves on him. The confession scene was so funny. As for Soocheol, I was also interested in his relationship with Da-Hye but I hate how she's left him multiple times and probably has given him trauma; the first time was enough like ma'am. I also do appreciate the dive they did into the Hong's family relationship with one another because there was clear problems, especially with Hae-In due to her brother dying and the strain/favoritism due to her younger brother. I did appreciate the character growth of it all and it was so wonderful to watch these people become better.

Additional Notes:

I wanna take this time to highlight the in-laws' new relationship together. I know I've brought it up a lot, but I really liked their scenes together, especially when the Hong parents were struggling with how to handle things that kept coming one after another. On top of when Hyunwoo was shot and that scene of them all coming together was so beautiful.

I don't think people talk enough about the comedic aspect in this drama. Jiwon and Soohyun, separately and together, they were hilarious. When Hyunwoo was crying at the table and saying how he didn't wanna go home and even the dramatics of being a male in-law that has to cook for the ritual/memorial thing, super funny. Hae-In is also super hilarious, especially the scene where she thought he was pulling her bag and just walked away in silence with a hand on her face. Again, the comedy and drama and romance was balanced out so well.

Older Brother - I wish there was more clarification on what happened with the oldest brother who got kicked out. I would have liked to have had him do more with the group to really solidify the union of the family and how he was going to run the Queens group.

I will give them credit for giving us a good drama with a decent ending. It was bittersweet but it's better than some of the nonsense that other dramas have given us. I love that we got glimpses of their family together, both with the kid and actual in-laws via pictures. I really loved this drama and will definitely be watching it again sometime.

Overall Rating: 9 out of 10

I really liked this drama. They have high ratings for a reason; they did keep up well along with the plot and the romance. There were some frustrating times, but it makes sense for the most part. I feel like there was a lot I already said, but yeah this is a great drama.

↣ Yes: this has it all - romance, comedy, drama, it's great. It's also very satisfactory because they do get a happy ending. There's a lot of focus on family, both as a married couple but also in regards to in-laws and the complicated relationships that come with marriage. There are some moments that you will just sob but it's so worth it.

↣ No: if you are triggered by miscarriages, obviously do not watch it. There is also a suicide that occurs. There are some frustrating beats where the characters act stupid but there's always something like that with these.

Kyungsoo??? Ooh…Oh hell yeah, classic exo r&b. The instrumental sounds like Baby Come Back by Player, mixed with a deep feminine note to it? Ala Salt n Pepa or En Vogue. !!! SEHUN STARTS US OFF OH MY GOD CONGRATULATIONS BABY!! A STRAIGHT UP SC START UP OH MY GOD YES!!! HUSKY SUHO??? THIS TRACK IS GOING MAGICALLY! That’s not a criticism btw, I love that song, and I can still appreciate this one’s uniqueness. My only complaint is vocally I didn’t get enough Kyungsoo, but again, I’m not listening with an ideal medium. Lee Jung Jae and Jung Woosung relationship dynamic

Dynamic:

These two rough house a lot, maybe even physically sparring for fun. I wouldn't be surprised if they work out together as well, but I'm seeing that the way they play around is quite rough, tough and an outsider might even think they hate each other (they don't, that's just how they are)

These two connection is very childish and sorta light hearted at times but also immature/petty at other times. Like when they fight, it can get really DIRTY (cursing each other out, hanging up the phone mid conversation, physically fighting as well). But it's like it doesn't take long before their both back friendly again, but their definition of friendly isn't the same as everybody else(it's pulling pranks on each other, cursing each other, just plain shit talking)

I do think they both share similar mindsets, goals, and passions. They both even may relate to having a similar come up and bond often about it

They could share the same religious beliefs and ideologies (even when it comes to marriage/dating). Could both go to the same church, reside in the same community so they see each other often

Like I said. They have a similar origin story that could have a lot past traumas, especially in regards to family. Both could have had parents that abandoned them or just unreliable family

Jung jae view of Woosung:

Jung Jae sees him as very manly and competent. But a man that puts too much pressure on himself, almost a toxic mindset of "I'm the only one who cares about me so I must do for me even at the cost of myself" . This belief stems from some childhood trauma and other past bad experiences.

Jung Jae thinks he overworks himself to an unhealthy amount and can be too egotistical/prideful about asking for help. Asking for help/assistance could be Woosungs biggest kryptonite and fear

Lee jung jae thinks of him as very fatherly, gives good advice and is very supportive. But sees him as a man that had to teach himself how to be a man due to a lack of a father figure in his life (so jung jae admires this about him)

In romance: jung jae thinks woosung deals with a lot of heart break either from a recent break up or past one (likely past) and rn he's putting his focus in himself and work. Thinks he's a workaholic, that purposely doesn't leave enough time for love

Woosung view of Jung jae:

Woosung thinks he holds a lot negative mindsets and thoughts. Can be close minded at times and woosung could feel the need to open his mind. Woosung thinks jung jae is possessive and controlling, may expect his love/care/money ect... to be returned back to him if giving out to others. Basically his help/love comes at a price.

Thinks jung jae ignores others boundaries a lot and can have a problem of putting himself in other people's shoes (inconsiderate)

in high school platonic relationships and friendships were really important to them. being around friends was a welcome break from all of their responsibilities; sometimes they felt selfish when they'd hang out with friends instead of focusing on rory or being home to make sure their mom was okay, but it was good for them. after high school, after they lost their mom and wren, after they had to figure out how to be eighteen years old and a parent of two, they stop being able to spend as much time with their friends. eventually their friends stop making an attempt because they want to have fun and be young and that's hard when you have a baby and a preteen around. so at that point friendships were put on a back burner for them. they were still important but they weren't going to prioritize them like they used to. the friends they do have now are incredibly important to them but they're aware that they're a secondary priority in levi's life. familial relationships are the most important to levi, they always have been.

while she loves her friends and values platonic relationships so so much, she has a hard time showing it sometimes. she's too shy or scared to be as open as she wants to be because she's been told she's too much. or her affection was unwanted. her closest friends are like family to her, she doesn't know where she'd be without them acting as her biggest supporters. she treats them with the same level of importance as she does her actual family and it's easier for her to be more physically affection with them. she loves being on the receiving end of platonic affection!! she loves being hugged or held or getting memes that remind her friend of her!! she loves it so much!! the biggest, most important things any of her friends do for her, is checking in and making sure she's not overwhelmed by all the noise. one of her closest friends will check in on her and nudge her to take hearing breaks if she needs to, they'll hold onto her hearing aids until she wants them back because she's always worried she'll lose them if they're not on.

romantic relationships / love were never his main priority. yeah, he had relationships but dating was hard as hell for him so he decided to focus more on his friends. because he knew that his closest friends would accept him as he is, not get close to him only to freak out once they found out he was trans, like some of his partners did. he's happier now that all of his relationships are a bit more functional and he's grown up quite a bit. so he's capable of caring about his friends and his boyfriend without being anxious that something bad will happen. he tries to give out platonic affection n stuff but he's still working on that, it's easier for him to return it than it is for him to initiate.

I love both BTIML and Suspicious partners and you're right in that this is a recent issue, most dramas before 2020/2021 do not fall into this pattern. As you said the problem is that it's so prevalent out of every 3 romance dramas that come out now, you can bet at least 2 of them have this dynamic. It's funny that you mentioned King the land because it's the drama that made me go hmm something is not right here and I started noticing that pattern more and more, he did every single thing in that relationship, even when he was dealing with his past/emotional issues they didn't have her support him or comfort him he took care of it alone and when they were telling her grandma they were getting married he talked about how he was going to make her happy and said she'll be happy with him for the rest of her life which ? where does he fall into this equation exactly? If this isn't a passing trend and the new reality for romance then I'm honestly going to be quite upset because they used to bring me such comfort.

I think the quality of kdramas is declining because of Netflix, and the need to churn out a drama after another with enough people watching each of them.

I thought more about this trend and I think it's partially bc of lazy writing, for sure, but also for two more reasons:

I think Korean women (I say women assuming they're most of the target audience for romance dramas), but women everywhere really, really would love a devoted partner in this shithole of a world that is going backwards on gender equality, so that trope really works especially in the current climate re: gender equality in KR

The media analysis abilities of the huge chunk of new kdrama viewers arriving thanks to the hallyu wave are shit. Open kdrama twt and you'll lose 12398 braincells in a moment. Any ML that doesn't immediately worship the FL without ever faltering (you're right, KTL was especially frustrating bc he never missed a beat despite going through stuff, but also KTL was very much surface level for kdrama standards) is labelled a red flag. Second leads who are written to be not the right person for the FL suddenly become the best option, any vaguely sympathetic hot villain is misunderstood and should have been the love interest. People said Hyunwoo is a red flad. BAEK HYUN WOO.

Honestly I think we'll have to just. Watch only the kdramas that dare to be different and hope the trend dies down. I think alchemy of souls, twinkling watermelon, there are dramas that carry some sort of originality and care, they just risk drowning in the kdrama machine the industry has become.

Chapter 4

I got only good intentions, so give me your attention

“What else is on the schedule for today?” Baekhyun asks loudly, his deep voice rising above the staff members that are lingering in the room. The women dressed in nondescript black t-shirts and jeans are taking their sweet time collecting the ‘forgotten’ articles of clothing draped across the couches in the studio. The photographer has long since left, yet these heart-eyed, red-cheeked women are hovering around Baekhyun like a flock of ravenous vultures. Waiting for the opportunity to strike. But even in a crowded room, you can feel the moment Baekhyun’s warm brown eyes land on you.

You are currently occupied with scrolling through the stream of notifications on your phone. Group chat texts, important email previews, and other social media posts flash by with a swipe of your thumb when you hear a distinct pair of boots walking toward you. Baekhyun’s cinnamon scent washes over you and you glance over your shoulder to find him standing right behind you. He has changed from the last outfit he was posing in (provocatively, by the way), now adoring a black t-shirt that stretches across his broad chest and light blue jeans tucked neatly into a pair of black timberland boots. He rests his chin on your shoulder, peering down at the to-do list on your phone, and you catch a whiff of the citrus shampoo lingering in his hair.

You turn around, raising an unamused brow at the curious expression on his face. “My schedule?” you emphasize, hoisting your bag over your shoulder.

“Our schedule,” he insists, hot on your heels as you exit the building. You can’t help but throw him another odd look over your shoulder. This man, who talked your ear off all morning, who held you hostage on his lap while stylists fussed over his makeup and hair for the past who knows how many hours is asking you what your plans are for the rest of the day... All after consuming only a single cup of coffee today as if he hasn’t been posing in front of cameras and under hot lights until now. Just how much energy does this man have?

You narrow your eyes, your steps slowing to a stop when his brown irises never waver from yours, sparkling with anticipation. You stare him down for a long minute before reluctantly reading off of the list on your phone. “I plan to hit up the mall, restock my fridge, and…”

“And?” he raises a brow expectantly.

“Those are the only things on my agenda for today so…” you trail off, biting the inside of your cheek and hesitantly meeting his eager gaze. “I guess I’ll be free after that.”

Baekhyun smiles, the corner of his lips curling up into a lopsided grin. You watch dumbfoundedly as he grabs your hand and leads you to the parking lot.

“Where are we going?” you ask, raising a brow.

“To my car,” he explains, gesturing to the sleek black car partially hidden behind a few trees.

Both your brows raise as you walk hand-in-hand down a gravel-filled sidewalk leading to the secluded area. You look up at Baekhyun’s broad back in confusion, squinting against the glare of the afternoon sun. A light summer breeze ruffles his messy black hair and the hint of petrichor and a vanilla scent tickles your nose. “Why?” You tilt your head, trying to figure him out. “Do you plan on dropping me off at the mall?”

“No, silly.” He chuckles, throwing you an amused look over his shoulder. “I’m coming with you. Who else will carry all your things?”

You are thrown for a loop while he opens the passenger door of the Audi for you, surrounding you with his cinnamon cologne and citrus scent. Okay, what’s up with him today? He hasn’t joined you on one of your errand runs in ages, nor has he ever insisted on tagging along, in fact. You narrow your eyes at him with a click of your tongue, resting a hand on your hip. Alright. What’s the deal? “Don’t you have better things to do today?”

Baekhyun braces his arm on the roof of the car and stares down into your eyes, catching you off guard by how close his face suddenly is to yours. From this close, you can count his individual eyelashes and see the specks of hazel and amber in his brown irises. “Maybe, but for you?” he murmurs lowly, mint on his breath and stars in his warm eyes, “I’ll always make time.”

You take a deep breath, staring at him with wide eyes. Now, you like to consider yourself a strong woman, and independent on your best days, but with that lithe body just shy of your fingertips, that killer jawline within your reach, those angelic eyes sparkling beautifully, and his alluring smirk right in front of your face, what’s a girl to do?!

—Continue on with your day as if nothing’s up, that’s what. After watching the staff women give him starry-eyed glances all morning and after feeling the glare of a thousand suns on your back, heaven forbid Baekhyun finds out that his suave ways have an effect on you as well. You would never hear the end of it; you would never live it down, and knowing him, he’d hold it over your head until you were both grey and old seated in your respected rocking chairs. With that in mind, you scoff and roll your eyes for lack of a better response to his antics and then proceed to get inside his car.

Baekhyun closes your door and walks around the front of the car to get in the driver’s seat, his cute trinkets and bobbleheads greeting you on his dashboard. He plops down onto the leather cushion and pulls out his phone while the car door is still open before pulling up his digital planner. Every day from now until mid-December is heavily highlighted with events in every color under the sun. He clicks on today’s date and looks down at the lengthy list on his phone, tapping his fingers on the steering wheel and running his hand through his hair, humming thoughtfully. Then you watch in horror as he deletes every single thing. 

“Oh, look,” he starts with a mischievous glint in his eyes, “I’m suddenly free.”

“Baekhyun-”

He drops his phone into the middle console and looks back up at you, blinding you with his million-watt smile. “Let’s go.”

You sit in stunned silence while he cranks up the air conditioner and the car engine purrs to life. He steers the Audi with a confident hand, taking back roads opposed to the traffic-jammed main streets. Sneaking glances your way every now and then. Riding around town like this reminds you of simpler times with him, your childhood best friend. Midnight drives with no destination in mind and 3am snack runs to the supermarket. In times like this, you forget about the differences between Byun Baekhyun and model Baekhyun.

Byun Baekhyun is a mischievous man with a lot of intellect. He’s playful, but he has his serious moments, always there for you when you need a shoulder to cry on and a friend. He’d move mountains for you at the drop of a hat, and the friendship—the bond you share with him is the truest form of love you’ve ever known.

Model Baekhyun feels like a stranger to you 9 times out of 10. A person millions of leagues ahead of you, staring down at you with smoky eyes and 24-carat earrings. Every twist of his waist and quirk of his lips mastered to perfection to woo everyone in a crowded room.

You’re pulled from your musings when Baekhyun slowly pulls up to the mall and parks his car under the shade of a tree between two other expensive cars. He rests his hand on the back of your seat and leans to reach for his bag in the backseat, the bottom of his t-shirt lifting up to reveal a peek of honey-toned skin. When he pulls back, he has sunglasses and a black mask in his hand. Essential items to hide the identity of someone high profile like him. He even grabs a baseball cap to tame his unruly hair, but when his brown eyes meet yours again, crinkling adorably at the corners, all you can do is sit there and savor these rare moments you have with him.
