i mean this with love, joy, peace and hope in my heart:

Nimona was fucking awful. It was a really, really bad movie trying very hard to appeal to fandom spaces by literally just hitting as much of the trope checklist as possible; got the gay guy, got the quirky alt girl, got the evil badlady, got the big spooky monster, got vague iconoclasm (down with 'the system' they say, changing nothing significant about the status quo by the denouement), got the ironic funny stuff, got the annoying wealthy guy (whose also a DUMB JOCK hehehoohoohaha), got the father-daughter found family thing (TLOU in all iterations is calamitously better), got the loose metaphor for othering that ends up making you so special you change the world (this is the 'saw twice as many stars' poem), they got it all!! except for quality. like soul or value.

Like, the characters are flat, it's lowkey rainbow capital copaganda, Nimona's VA was so soulless she was practically an aftermarket Amazon Alexa, the plot is a fucking mess, the pacing is terrible, it has that awful reoccuring "douchey jock" joke (he literally gets SA'd in one of the bits (bathroom one, for reference)).

Worst of all, even as someone who has not read the source material, I can fucking GUARANTEE that it was completely butchered by this adaptation. I say this with the full understanding that translating a series of graphic novels to one (1) movie requires MASSIVE restructuring, this simply was not that.

There were no creative adapational choices. They boiled off everything notable or interesting about the original stories and kept only the ingredients they thought WE would like, presuming we would enjoy regardless of the actual soul or quality of the finished product. I'm fucking sick of how mindlessly fan-oriented major movie production has become, the MCU-ification of cinema is such a fucking disaster.

IK a lot of people like to say "I enjoy everything I watch" and while I respect your right to interpret art the way you please, it goes without saying that a thought-terminating cliche does not actually count as interpretation, it is a refusal to engage at all. At the VERY least you'd enjoy stuff MORE if you understood WHY you liked what you like.

twenty-two — would  you  consider  [ character name ]  to  be  a  comfort  character ?

mm... yes and no? by and large, he is. i really like to just sit and daydream about his angry little rants or his soft moments with peter or his deep conversations with hippolyte. i love the little world that my best friend and i have built with these characters, so it’s mostly a comforting thing. throughout the phd application stress, however, there have definitely been times when i couldn’t write lewis because it just made me think too much about my academic future. i think i’ve mentioned it before, but for those who don’t know, lewis was created as a character directly as a result of my masters research. i was reading so much about these chaotic 1820s surgeons embroiled in the effort to change anatomy laws and i was like... i GOTTA make a really angry surgeon. and that was lewis. the dissection / surgical education history of this period is my whole phd research topic, so while it’s sometimes fun to imagine lewis in whatever incident i’m reading about, there were points when my application was in limbo and i was just despairing, and that made it hard to think about anything associated with it. that included lewis. 

so that was a long ramble, sorry, but yeah! mostly he’s a comfort character, just not when i’m Academic Stressin.

lmao definitely not. i’ve said it many times before, but i just don’t listen to music. on the very rare occasions i do, it’s like... the same three abba songs or a taylor swift song here and there. i don’t seek out new music, i don’t enjoy listening to music, i just have no interest in the medium. i know a lot of people kind of just... can’t wrap their heads around that tbh??? people constantly challenge me on it and insist that i have to like it or i just haven’t found the perfect genre, but just. hey. some people don’t enjoy the process of reading, no matter what it is. i just don’t like listening to music. sometimes i do feel a little left out since it seems music taste is such a big part of people’s personalities and how they connect, but... yeah. i don’t like music. 

thirty — do  you  have  any  fandoms  that  you  avoid  writing  within ?

hmmm. well, definitely h*rry p*tter. i know the people who write it here are very anti-BadLady and that’s fine for them if they still want to connect with the series, but i want absolutely nothing to do with it. she’s ruined it for me. i do not want to touch that series with a ten foot pole, even if the blog is firmly against what she stands for. i don’t follow single muses for the fandom and although i do follow some lovely writers of multimuses with some characters from the series, i ask that they tag the content and i won’t interact with those characters even in aus. 

other than that, i don’t think i have any hard and fast lines. i’m a little wary of dr*gon age since i had awful experiences in that fandom years ago, but i’ve found some fantastic da blogs that i love to see on my dash now, so i’m just a little more selective. beyond that... i guess i just tend to seek out fandoms that work with historical settings and steer clear of the ones that don’t. not because i dislike the latter, i just don’t want to write lewis outside of a historical setting apart from very selective aus like vampyr and bbc ghosts, so it just doesn’t make sense to follow, like... m*rvel blogs that exist only in the modern day. what’s lewis gonna do with that.

And as I’m sure you know at least from watching Longmire........... sheriff is an eLECTED OFFICIAL FOR THE COUNTY which SUPERSEDES THE MAYOR and yes legitimately I’m an old man who yells at clouds, THIS is what put me over in the crappy fantasy make believe show
