Friendly reminder to listen VERY VERY CRITICALLY if someone tries to convince you not to register for federal disaster assistance following a declared disaster. Helene is still moving north and I see the usual rants picking up steam already.

That person trying to win social commentary points online is not your friend. That person can’t give you funds for house repair or to restock on food and meds. And if they say they can - that is a scammer and not someone you can trust.

Scammers and developers trying to take advantage after a disaster intentionally spread rumors/misinformation to convince survivors not to apply for federal disaster assistance. Many well meaning people pick this misinformation up and spread it further without understanding how the assistance process works. It’s happened more and more over the years and it will happen with Helene.

If you do not apply for assistance, you lose the chance to receive federal funds. APPLY APPLY APPLY. This doesn’t guarantee you will meet eligibility requirements, but you definitely can’t meet them if you don’t apply. The application process isn’t perfect but it continues to be updated - and was updated in 2024!! - to try and make it easier for survivors. If you have damages or lost power for an extended time, APPLY.

You can check on FEMA.gov or with local news to see when disaster recovery centers will open, how long the application period will last, and what information you’ll need when applying.

Please remember if you need to call a business, go to their actual website (or for example for credit cards, use the number on the back of the card) to get their official phone number.

Do NOT trust the number you find on a Google search. Some of those are going to be scam numbers.

For example:

-folks have called in to what they thought were airline customer service to troubleshoot a canceled flight, only to be prompted to pay for new tickets or rescheduling fees, only to discover later that they had just given credit card information to a scammer instead of the airline

-folks have called in to healthcare facilities to schedule or change appointments and ended up giving their ssn information to what turned out to be scammers instead of actual healthcare phone operators

-folks have called in to troubleshoot missing packages only to be asked to download an app by a scammer, who uses that app to access their devices

It's worth the time and critical scrutiny to make sure you're calling the correct number. With the new administration coming in being hell-bent on dissolving the CFPB, this is only going to get worse going forward, and we all need to look out for it.

do you guys remember the post i made awhile back? about how nasty the tesblr community is, my experience with hate anons and false rumors? well i got some updates, and god i’m upset. and it’s not even about me.

turns out the mods in my past server not only harassed me, but others via anon hate. i’m not sure about rumors, though. they directed it towards someone who was nasty to me, but goddamn dude. i HATE that these people are still (maybe?) active in this fandom. i don’t care how much i dislike the person they targeted - you are no better than them if you go out if your way to send anon hate to people you dislike. and since they know i was associated with these awful people, i fear that i am grouped in with their behavior.

i won’t call out names. i have them all blocked. but jesus christ, do better. grow the fuck up and stop being a bully.

it gave me a lot of closure learning that this is a pattern with them versus anything to do with me.

Maybe I'm just jaded but seeing the immense influx of obvious bot accounts sending my mutuals asks that are just obvious scam sob story begging and seeing them go 'yep sounds good! Lemme post this!' is just. It's bots y'all.

"oh this account is vetted!" By who? Someone else who is equally an online stranger? I don't trust like that and neither should yall. It is so fucking easy to just claim 'yeah I'm vetted by so and so!' and if the account in question has thousands of posts you're not gonna go through to find the one username. They're betting on that.

Also, are y'all aware that GFM and pay/pal don't operate in most countries? In order for a GFM to go through there has to be an American (or someone else in a country of their banking operations) and then send that money to the person within ga/za. (Censoring it because these bots love targeting ppl that mention it) If a GFM doesn't mention the relationship between the person raising funds and the beneficiary, THATS A MASSIVE RED FLAG.

if you want to help, cool! Here is a list of organizations that are actually helping people with medicine, water, electricity, humanitarian aid, and other resources that a single family unit cannot and should not be responsible for providing. There are also things you can click to help for free. (And additionally; DO RESEARCH ON ORGANIZATIONS!! Find one you like and give them a much needed boost!! That is significantly more helpful than posting spam bot asks!!!)
