thinking about the tortured poets department the song, and the charlie puth line, and how maybe like, the act of declaring he should be a bigger artist helps place the song into the greater timeline.

because it’s a sort of weird thing to say in 2024 of an artist that’s no longer up and coming.

charlie puth got his start in youtube in the late 2000’s and released his debut single in february 2015. and leading up to that he had several EP’s and promotional singles. it made me curious, at what point might the people en masse start to pay him attention? i checked google trends and as you can see here he gets a huge jump between the 2014 and 2015 data.

(he then gets a further jump toward 2016 when he did a promo single featuring megan trainor, and then doing “see you again” with wiz khalifa. (coincidentally this song becomes one of the guest duets featured in the 1989 tour movie))

and i was looking around at articles from this time period, when i ran into this tasty morsel:

so to summarize, charlie puth had his breakout star peak over the course of roughly 2014-2016, during which he was up for an award at the 2015 MTV VMAs. he doesn’t win, and in fact, he loses out to taylor herself! later on in the article it talks about him going to an after party and hanging out with taylor selena and others. so it had me thinking, i could almost imagine taylor talking with her friends that year or that night, or even declaring to charlie himself in the wake of his loss and her win, in a giddy manner, at the party they are reported as having talked at, that he deserves more success than he gets. in this way i came to the conclusion that the timeframe of 2015-ish (rather than 2023) really fits the spirit of the lyric “we declared charlie puth should be a bigger artist”

A Sweet Creature

Ava Greene sits down with actor and friend, Dieter Bravo. Hollywood’s new leading man gets candid about life in front of and behind the camera. He talks about his latest movie, his commitment to his sobriety and his newest role— husband?!

Ava Greene: You're approaching three years sober now, how are you feeling?

Dieter Bravo: Probably the best I’ve felt in a long time. Sobriety is a day to day progression that I take very seriously, and I try to not lose sight of that even when I’m having bad days. Though, I’m grateful bad days have been few and far between at this point in my sobriety. I can attribute that to the support system I have built for myself through friends, family, my sponsor that I still work with and most importantly my wife who keeps me grounded daily. They all continue to keep me in check and remind me how awesome my life is, especially right now. Staying clean is a full time commitment, and it’s really a beautiful thing.

AG: You followed in your famous parents footsteps by going into acting and your career and struggles with sobriety have been well documented but your parents have rarely commented publicly, are they supportive of your work and your journey?

DB: For me, I don’t need them to make a show of it by commenting or sharing their thoughts publicly to know they support me. There was a point in time where they did all they could do for me, but ultimately it had to be my choice to make the decision to get clean. Thankfully, we’ve been rebuilding our relationship over the last few years. And being in the public eye for most of our lives, the last thing we want is for outsiders thinking they have a say in our lives. In short, yes I have very supportive parents in all aspects of my life and I’m so happy for that.

AG: This is your second project since rehab, are you viewing this as a comeback or a fresh start?

DB: Comeback? I didn’t know I left… Kidding! Sure, some might say it’s a comeback. A fresh start. Whatever analogy best fits the narrative is fine by me— and I don’t mean that negatively in any sense. I mean, you’ve known me long enough to know I just try not to focus on any of that stuff, messes with my fucking brain waves. I just see it as me doing what I love with a new perspective and a different approach to choosing what projects I’m going to give my time to than I have in the past.

AG: What can you tell us about this project and the character you're playing?

DB: I had the best f*ckin’ time while shooting this film— sorry, but the emphasis was needed. I was really drawn to the vibrancy that this script evoked, even with the serious nature of the storyline and characters. I couldn’t stop thinking or talking about for weeks afterwards. I’d sit with my wife at breakfast and we’d discuss the script and my character for what felt like hours. I knew after I heard her feedback that I needed to be apart of this film— she might have said I’d be stupid to say no to it, in her own loving way.

The film is really about the process of rediscovering yourself. Navigating the challenges that come along with being at your lowest point and leaning on the ones who have been there for you. It’s about finding love in its purest form when you never thought you were deserving of it.

I found bits of myself in this character as we were filming, it was very much a cathartic experience for me. I guess you could say it was art imitating life in a weird way.

AG: There's already been some buzz about this year's award season, do you think this is finally your year?

DB: Ooooh! Is it too presumptuous for me to say yes?! I’ve started dusting the spot where I plan for it to go. I sound like some sort of pompous idiot! Now no one is going to go see it!*

In all seriousness, ‘cause I’m sure Poppy and my agent will be rolling their eyes when they read this. If all I get is a couple nominations, that alone feels like winning. A shiny statue would be nice though— just saying.

AG: You've talked often about your love of art and you recently purchased a gallery. Are you planning to publicly pursue other creative endeavors?

DB: I won’t be joining American Idol anytime soon if that’s what you’re asking. Oh, you weren’t referring to my ability to hold a note during our many karaoke nights— noted!

How did you put it? Other creative endeavors? I’ve got a few art pieces in the works right now that I’m itching to dive back into when I get home. I’ve got a major gallery in LA lined up later in the year for an artist spotlight exhibit, they’ll be housing some of my work through the next year. Shoutout to my wife for getting that all lined up while I was away shooting this film.

AG: What's next for Dieter Bravo? Any other projects lined up you can tell us about?

DB: I’m looking forward to some downtime I have coming up. Poppy has the summer off, so we’ll get to finally live that newlywed life. Settle into the role of doting husband while she does her thing at the gallery.

AG: Off the record, if you got married and didn't tell anyone I will kick yours and Poppy’s ass!

DB: We’re celebrating our one year this month actually. We eloped quietly last year right after we got engaged— wanted to keep it to ourselves for a little while. Which reminds me, you and Bryony should hop on a call with Poppy after this. Seeing as I let the cat out of the bag and this is our announcement— surprise!

Today has been actual hell. You work in IT at an office and you usually don’t have much to do besides help people here and there. Today, it was like everyone was having problems with the new program that they were all supposed to switch to. You were technically supposed to go home at 5pm but it is now 8pm. You slowly pulled yourself up the steps to your shared apartment with Damien. The only things you could hear around you were others in their apartments, watching TV and faint talking. It was so tempting to just flop down on the step and just take a break but seeing Damien was the reward of pushing yourself up the steps.

“Just a few more steps, Y/N. You can do it.” You whispered to yourself, trudging up the last few steps and grabbing your keys out of your pockets. The sound of little paws booking it to the door thumped from the other side.

“Hi loves!” You just threw your jacket off and dropped to the ground to love on Zelda and Freyja.

“Y/N? Is that you?” Damien’s voice echoed from the living room.

“Nope, just a stranger, breaking in to rob you.” You shouted back while giving the two cats head scratches.

“Ha-ha, you’re just sooo hilarious.” Damien says giggling, while peaking his head around the corner.

“I know, I truly deserve an award for being the funniest.” You just gave him a half assed smile. He could tell from the look on your face and the fact you weren’t roasting him, something was up.

“What’s going on in that little head of yours? Busy day?” He asked while walking towards you and sticking his hand out, to help you up.

“You could say that. Would you maybe wanna just order food and we could relax and watch a movie?” You suggest hoping that he won’t oblige to the request.

“Of course, go change into some comfy clothes and go get on the couch. I’ll get it all set up.” He said with a smile while helping you stand back up.

You took a few minutes to yourself in your bedroom, before getting changed into sweatpants and an old shirt of Damien’s. You took a little bit longer while in the bathroom because you wanted to wash the grime off your face from the day.

You practically threw yourself on the couch and sighed really loudly into the pillow. “Do you wanna talk about it or do you just wanna eat then watch a movie and cuddle?” You hear Damien ask from the doorway. He had a bag that had takeout in it, in his hand.

“I’m just so mentally drained. We started using a new program at work and it did not want to work for absolutely anyone. I was having to delete it and redownload it for so many people today. I didn’t think they would hold me there that long but nope.” You took a really deep breath before turning around onto your back. It felt like tears were starting to well up so quickly in your eyes, one little comment and they would come flooding out. “Will you just come hold me for a few minutes then we can eat? Please?”

Damien didn’t even give you the opportunity to think about everything going on in your head before you were yanked up off the couch into his arms. He was holding you bridal style while you just giggled. “What are you doing, dude?” You asked.

“Uuuuuh, picking up my partner, so I can lay down on the couch and put said partner on top of me. So, I can fulfill their request. You biiiiig dummmmmyyyyy.” He laid back on the couch with you still in his arms then he let you go, so you can get comfortable.

You turned around, on your stomach, so your chin was on his chest and you were looking up at him. “Okay, one, rude. What did we say about name calling?”

He cut you off before you could continue, “We never said anything about name calling because I like picking on you. It’s the way I show my love.” He said while resting his hands on your back and staring down at you.

“Touché and two, I can’t thank you enough for just being so caring. I genuinely don’t know what I would do, if I didn’t have you to come home to.” A smile flooded Damien’s face, as he yanked you up closer to him and he pressed a kiss onto your forehead.

“You would probably go absolutely bonkers, if we’re being honest.” He whispered, giggling whenever you acted offended

You just laid there, tracing your finger alongside the tattoos, trying to not cry. It felt more and more like a damn starting to overflow.

“I’m really proud of you. You have come so far compared to where you were a few years ago. You didn’t think you would even get this position and was terrified about starting your career. You thought your entire college years were going to just go to waste. Look at you now. You have a job, where you are loved. Everyone comes to you whenever they need help, whenever there are many other people they could go to. You are the sunshine in everyone’s day. They know they will never have to deal with someone rude whenever they need assistance. You always keep up this mask like everything is a -okay, so they won’t feel bad for bothering you. I’ve seen you while you’re at work. Maybe, you should see if you can get a day off here soon and we can just lounge around all day.”

You immediately bursted into tears because of his words. You’ll never understand why or how he can put up with you, constantly being so stressed and drained but he does. You couldn’t be more thankful for him.

“Hey, hey. It’s okay.” He whispered pulling you closer to him and pressed kisses all over your face with dramatic signs in between, trying to draw a laugh from you. “Take a moment to just let it all out then let’s eat because I can hear your stomach growling and it sounds like there is an angry goblin inside of you.”

: ̗̀➛ my relationship. this is what i’m most excited for, my relationship with aaron. we’re quite literally soulmates and i don’t care if it’s cheesy to script that. it’s a private relationship because honestly it’s nobody’s business but ours. we haven’t even told our families yet but they’ll find out at christmas. we don’t exactly plan on announcing it publicly anytime soon. we aren’t gonna hide it though, we’re just gonna let people speculate until we are ready to officially come out with it. and oh my god, i scripted he has a few tattoos as well but there’s one that i absolutely love & am 100% gonna lick. eventually. anyways… just look up james potter tattoo and you’ll see what i mean.

: ̗̀➛ my parents relationship. i absolutely adore my mom, she’s my favorite person in the entire universe and she deserves someone who’s hopelessly devoted to her. like my dad (chris) absolutely adores her and practically worships the ground she walks on. he brings her to every single one of his movie premieres and all of the award shows. he spoils the absolute fuck out of her and is just absolutely in love with her.

: ̗̀➛ the greenhouse. okay, so i scripted me & aaron have a greenhouse a few yards away from the house and it’s huge. like it has two stories, huge. imagine the greenhouse from hogwarts legacy, okay? it’s really really beautiful too. intricate glass, ivy crawling up the sides in random directions, a cobbled-dirt path leading from our back patio to it, fairy lights lighting up the path. we only have plants on the first floor right now but we hope to eventually have plants growing on the second floor too.

: ̗̀➛ the marauders fandom. i have made some major changes to this fandom because holy fuck, i love the marauders but the fandom sucks in this reality. for starters, it’s a lot less toxic. everyone’s headcanons & opinions are respected and haters are blocked immediately instead of being interacted with. like my community, it’s also open and welcoming to any new fans. i did script a certain ship (not starchaser) was a lot less popular so it doesn’t appear in nearly every single fic and that a certain fanfic doesn’t exist as well. i’m not saying which ship & fic but the two coincide so i’ll let you guess.

✉️ When you first started dating hyunjin you had no idea how he would actually be, of course being around him you’ve heard him talk numerous times about romance. Hearing though is different from actually experiencing

✉️You quickly found out that hyunjin loves exactly like he says he does, with his whole heart. Part of you wasn’t sure if you even deserved this. But he always reassured you, every single time.

✉️As the relationship would go on, you’d notice little habits he has. Each of them would make him sound weird or odd to other people, but you found them so endearing. Even when he has to check if the sink water is turned off 3 times before actually going to bed.

✉️Eventually you both had a sit down and talked about crazy things you both had wanted to do, both being extreme romantics the list was very cliche. But it left you two giggling and bonding once more. That list went from dancing in the rain to running through random fields. That last one definitely made you two laugh imagining.

✉️Little did you know, Hyunjin took note of everything you both said in that list. He promised himself you both would experience everything on that list, no matter what.

✉️You DIDNT catch on to him trying to complete the list until he brought up buying plane tickets to Iceland. When you asked why he simply answered, “um the green fields duh…”

✉️With Hyunjin you get a second and third family, dinners with his parents and the boys. All of them being so welcoming towards you. Of course some of the boys were a little overprotective of Hyunjin at first but once they saw how protective he was of you, that quickly faded to teasing Hyunjin.

✉️Of course, since he’s Hyunjin, you guys always leave the movie nights with the boys early. He always wants 1:1 attention from you, and only you. Anytime someone else who isn’t in his circle tries to get his attention he doesn’t do well at not hiding the fact he wants nothing to do with it. If it’s at an awards show or event he quickly skips off

✉️During 1:1 time, you two spend a lot of time painting together and writing together. Normally the work isn’t shown but it doesn’t have to be. It’s just an unspoken “I want to be around you while I work” sort of vibe. If he’s stressed sometimes he’ll actually want to be alone, but after he cools off he’ll definitely be hugging you from behind while you do whatever you’re doing

I’ve seen people on Twitter talk about how Hazbin Hotel was snubbed since it wasn’t nominated for an Emmy and talking about how people who don’t like the show are happy about it and like.

Idk I can only speak for myself, but tbh I’m kinda sad that the show, from the beginning, just…wasn’t good. Not Emmy good, at the very least. (more below)

There’s this weird expectation that, if you are at all critical or dissatisfied with what the Hazbin show ended up being, that you’re a horrible person who is obsessed with seeing everyone who worked on the project fail, and have just hated the show and its creator since the beginning of time and like…

I did not want the show to be bad!! I was really hoping that I’d be wrong, that I’d be pleasantly surprised, that the show would be entertaining and well written and paced. But, for me, it just wasn’t.

I have tried to be very forthcoming about the things I liked and what I wished the show would have focused on more. I wanted to like the show!!! I would have LOVED the show if its writing and animation were on par with other adult animated shows.

However when it came out, it had a LOT of problems, and it seems really clear to me that the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences picked up on them, just as I did.

It’s so odd to me that a lot of Hazbin “super-fans” think that if you’re critical of the show you must hate it, because the majority of people I’ve spoken to who are very critical of the series ARE fans of the series who felt disappointed by it when it actually came out.

Switching gears a bit—It’s genuinely kind of disheartening to see so many people prop the show up as if it was the best most perfect best show ever when, in reality, Hazbin is a perfectly serviceable and fun show, but is not as deep or as well-crafted as it claims to be, and as a lot of other adult animation that’s out right now.

Recently, I’ve seen this belief develop in some fandoms that what you love needs to be somehow validated or “proven” to be good by winning an award or receiving accolades.

And while I definitely understand the desire to see something you love be recognized for the artistry that’s put into it, the truth is that sometimes there are really really good pieces of art and media that don’t get the recognition they deserve, and there are really really bad pieces of art and media that are treated like holy grails.

Like I’m saying all of this as someone who’s favorite movie is fucking Tron: Legacy. I LOVE Tron Legacy. It’s so fun and I love the characters and environment. But it’s also bad!!! It’s a very convoluted plot, and characters don’t get a lot of development and it has the “born sexy yesterday” trope which I hate and it’s one of my favorite movies of all time!!! I love it!!

But it doesn’t have to be a perfect masterpiece for it to be a masterpiece to me personally. I can recognize that while I love it, it’s not particularly amazing by any means. It’s kind of a shit show. The story and writing and cinematography don’t deserve any big awards. But I love it and that’s all that matters!

I do not think that Hazbin Hotel deserves any awards for being an excellent television show, and I can also really see why the people who decide Emmy nominations did not nominate it.

But who cares what I think!! My favorite movie is Tron Legacy! And I completely unironically love the 1993 Super Mario Bros. Movie!!!

The point I’m trying to make is that, while yes, it can be disappointing when something you love isn’t recognized, but that shouldn’t take away the value the show has to you if you love it.

Hazbin Hotel can be a bad show, and it can still be your favorite show that you love more than anything. Tron Legacy can be a bad movie and I can still love it and think it’s peak cinema. It’s okay. It’s okay to like and love media that isn’t perfect. It’s okay to criticize the media you love.

Exactly. Don’t remember where I heard this, but it was something like, all actors are thirsty, but Hollywood doesn’t take the ones who look it seriously. If he was set up with JA early on I can’t believe he also wasn’t set up with media trainers and brand specialists. Did he just ignore them? Did he take them to heart too much then decide to add his own extra extra twist? More is better! He is a case study for sure. And while of course your co stars will say nice things to the public, I’ve wondered for a long time about the disparity between what people say about him and what he shows us.

I believe he must have had media training in the last ten years. I don't know when exactly, but at some point he became a little more at ease in interviews. But the thing is, to be really good at it, you must have some confidence in who you are and what you stand for.

And I don't think he has any idea who he is truly. That's why he seems so full of contradictions all the time.

He also listens to the wrong people. I'm thinking of AN, of course, but also his mommies who praise him whether he's good or bad. They're also a hungry bunch, who will take anything and everything he can give. They don't care wether he's constantly shilling, encouraging them to go see his movie in the midst of a pandemic, reading from a phone book or walking hand in hand with an escort, they'll take it all and ask for more. And Sam delivers, oblivious to how thirsty he looks in the industry he so wants to be part of, and which, as you point out, does not take kindly to such behaviour. That's why I have such a hard time with these women who think he can do no wrong and deserve all the awards. They think they're supporting him, but they're just flattering his ego, condoning mediocrity and, at their worst, making a mockery of their idol. I wish better for him; I wish he made the effort to be better at his art, and that's why I speak up when he under-delivers or messes up. I'm sure some of his co-stars think like me and wish the same things.

Yeah I couldn’t actually digest that 3rd film either. Sorry to prompt discussion of it since I’m aware you were avoiding it knowing you’ll dislike it, but the discord discussion you guys had gave me catharsis since it aligned with my impression of the movie.

Apparently people are having discourse on Sonic’s “vengeance” thing being terribly ooc, but I just gave up giving a shit abt Sonic’s character integrity in the films a long time ago. Meanwhile, the portrayals of Shadow, Maria and Gerald pissed me off so much that I had to circle back into shitposting to disassociate from what I saw. My critical literary analysis heart would stop beating if it had to personally pull back the layers of how awful everything was. I feel like the people (and TV tropes) gassing this movie up aren’t real. Maria was done so dirty (beyond being fridge girl): girl didn’t even resemble the Maria that I was endeared to from the games. Shadow was a straight up spineless lapdog with the emotional range of a turnip. And the Jimbotniks were probably the worst Jim Carrey bits I’ve seen to date. So much runtime gone to Jimbotnik, instead of maybe… developing Maria and Shadow beyond Lilo & Stitch Lite(TM). If anything this movie has won the award of creating the best bastardisation of Gerald, no notes!! “A misogynist! Why didn’t I think of that?” Says the people that write Gerald off as an evil guy.

Truly, I’m not surprised with how far this Sonic movie circlejerk has come. I feel partially bad cuz the Sonic in my head tells me “Don’t dwell on it!” but it’s not easy, and we’re still going through the movie hype period. I’m a generally private person even online, so thanks for sharing your thoughts on the bits you did see.

From the clips I watched, it genuinely seemed like a Scary Movie parody. I could not imagine spending $40 to see this in theaters, with a very palpable risk of having the crowd erupt into cheers when Maria died.

To get the mandatory elephant in the room out of the way: yeah, I am Le SA2 fan(tm), and that is going to color my perceptions. Even after accounting for personal bias, however... it's just a bad movie, Scoob.

Like, I'm sorry, but idk how else to describe it. The source material might have its fair share of rough edges and plot holes, but the changes actively make the preexisting narrative worse.

In fact, my buddy @woodchipp did a comprehensive write-up describing how the film's changes weaken SA2's narrative in exhaustive detail. I strongly advise you to go check it out:

...Besides, I don't think it's unfair to point out how a lack of faithfulness impacts the narrative, especially since they didn't have to borrow any SA2 elements at all.

Not to mention the filmmakers straight-up admitted in an interview that they relied on their memory of the game instead of using a single cent of their $122 million budget to buy the game on Steam.

Why borrow concepts if you're going to change them so radically to the point where they're in-name-only, or even inverted? Why not just make an original plot at that stage?

Admittedly, this is a situation I can't fully remain Switzerland on because SA2 is my all-time favorite game, period, let alone favorite Sonic game. It was the game that shaped me during my formative years.

Film or no film, I've always had issues with adaptations hollowing out the bones of the original game and replacing the marrow with their own pale substitutes. The fact that most adaptations refuse to be faithful sends the message that SA2 is worthless save for its Vibes, and I think the game deserves better than that.

Outside of that... it boggles my mind just how poorly-constructed the film seems to be, even just judging from a few clips? Putting aside its butchering of the source material, it's a poor narrative on its own merits. The previous two movies bored me, and kinda cheesed me off at certain points, but this one offended me on a spiritual level. And not just because it murdered my boy, but because it's bad. I wouldn't say that if I felt otherwise.

We had an incredibly long discussion about the film on Discord precisely because it is another onion of suckage; once you start peeling back the layers, they never stop.

Actually, TV Tropes can't seem to make up its mind on whether the researchers tortured Shadow. There are some entries that are straight-up fanfic. (ex. "the scientists feared him until Maria showed him compassion" - okay but Shadow told Maria he thought the scientists feared him during the starry night scene, which takes place presumably years after he befriended her. not that you'd know since nothing in the film tells us time is passing lmao And aside from Shadow mentioning it once in passing, this was never shown; in fact, everything we see of his treatment in the film implies the opposite. Plus there's the fact that he could have just left if he thought being there was so terrible, since nothing was particularly keeping him there; removing Maria's illness as a load-bearing pillar of the narrative really makes the rest suffer). In fact, during our discussions, I coined the term "Schroedinger's torture" to refer to fanon's perception of Shadow's backstory. Whether the researchers tormented Shadow depends on how much Emoshun you want the audience to feel at any given time.

...Anyway. That's just one (1) issue among many.

Gerald

The film pretty much took away OG!Gerald's dignity in order to portray him as ~quirky.~ Except when it needed to portray him as A Worse Villain Than Eggman, because of course it did.

Wood pointed out that, unlike Shadow, Gerald does not receive any sympathy from the camera, despite the two sharing similar grief and goals. He's portrayed as dismissible due to being an Irredeemable Piece of Shit(tm), whose death warrants nothing more than a shrug.

In a film that purports to teach kids about muh grieving process, this is actually a pretty inadvertently odious message to send.

Maria

Everything I want to say about Maria's portrayal has already been presented in the screenshots I posted.

The movie character, although nice, doesn't particularly read as Maria to me. She reads like an ordinary teenage girl.

And part of me feels like folks' general belief that Movie!Maria is more fleshed-out than Games!Maria is due to their belief that Maria was a boring, generic character to begin with. Because if you take a step back, you'd realize Movie!Maria fulfills the same function as her games counterpart. She also lacks the same amount of depth and agency. The only difference is she's able to do more typical kid stuff due to not being terminally ill.

Quirks =/= fleshing out a character. She still lacks ambitions and goals as her own person. She still only exists to fuel Gerald and Shadow's pain. In fact, they removed what little she already had by robbing her of last words - she instead ends her life with a scream. If this was supposed to be an improvement on her original portrayal, they didn't actually improve much, suffice to say.

As I've mentioned, Maria's illness is a load-bearing pillar. It's arguably the one element that ties everything together: Shadow's existence, Gerald's research, the GUN raid. By removing it, the whole story becomes a lot more scattered and disparate.

Why does GUN allow Gerald to keep his grandchild in a top-secret research facility where she regularly escapes with the highly-coveted test subject? Why isn't she going to school? What is keeping her here? What is there to keep Shadow here, aside from Maria's friendship, if he isn't to be her cure? The film doesn't even establish that he's immortal.

Even her memory doesn't garner any respect from the bereaved, since Gerald claims what Maria might have wanted doesn't matter and Shadow destroys her belongings in his mindless, pain-fuelled rage.

Shadow

...by removing the element of Gerald's brainwashing, the film portrays Shadow as a worse person than he is in the game, because now every destructive thing he does is the result of an active choice he makes. He knows for a stone-cold fact that Maria would not have wanted him to destroy the world, but he doesn't care because his pain is just that all-consuming. Who cares what the dead would have wanted, right?

Except, you know, Shadow didn't have to go to the lengths of global genocide to achieve "justice" for Maria. He could have done the same thing by simply killing all the GUN personnel and offing himself.

Movie!Shadow also consistently betrays an uncharacteristic selfishness, in that he appears to consider his pain the most important thing, to the point where he literally defines himself by it. I am not kidding when I say you could make a drinking game out of the number of times he uses the word.

Although his pain troubled him, Games!Shadow is, at his core, selfless. He is willing to set aside his trauma sometimes for the sake of others.

Even if we were to confine ourselves to the bounds of SA2, there's still the scene where he rescued Rouge from exploding on Prison Island.

Which, btw, is the polar opposite of what he did in the film, leaving Sonic to burn up in the atmosphere despite Sonic helping him see the light error of his ways.

Much respect, many atonement, wow.

Besides all this, there's also the strong implication that Movie!Shadow bends whichever way the wind blows him. He may not actually be capable of independent reasoning and agency. His behavior read as nearly toddler-like to us, in that he whined about desiring revenge like one and seemed easily influenced by whoever talked to him most recently.

DESPITE NOT BEING BRAINWASHED, he doesn't protest "wtf are you talking about, 'Maria's wishes don't matter'?" when Gerald insists giving humanity "what it deserves" matters more than honoring the dead's wishes. He just goes "ok, sounds good" and rolls with it.

The only way I can interpret his behavior is selfishness. People would chalk that up to Gerald being some master manipulator, but honestly, what Gerald said was so basic-bitch strawman nihilist that it hardly counts as manipulation.

Also, let's think about this for a second. What kind of message does that send about grief and trauma? Experience enough of either and you'll become a mindless creature, lashing out in pain for lack of any other coping method?

Note how Sonic never actually tells Shadow that the pain goes away, or at least lessens with time. You had one job.

The Marvels 2023 dir. Nia DaCosta

My Honest Thoughts:

I’m actually kinda sad that this movie is performing so poorly at Box Office, and I’m all the more sad that it lacks the excellence that I’ve imagined for the last two years in the narrative sense.

The cast is strong, the visuals are strong, the action is strong, the direction is strong, but it all came crashing down because Marvel has been doing a horrible job at choosing its writers for movies. It is also fair to mention that the studios have refused to pay the actors fairly, thus causing another fatal blow at the box office!

There was just so many forces against this movie and it was evident that this would be the outcome. Had the storytelling took a new approach at these characters and gave a more interesting villain — or even a villain with a more developed story— and gave us at least ten or fifteen more minutes with these characters for a more fleshed out story, the outcome could have differed.

Not even lying, this movie has some of the BEST action scenes in the mcu, some FRESH and creative stylistic choices in directing, some killer ass comedy, and some jaw-dropping visuals! It has given Carol an even better character arc and has brought some clarity and direction to the multiverse saga that has otherwise been handled poorly in phase 4 and 5. Nia DaCosta is a certified nerd and she did exceptionally well with building up the cosmic corner of the mcu!

Let me just say that Academy Award Winner, Brie Larson, shined so bright in her sequel! She channeled so many new emotions and character dynamics that make up Carol Danvers! She was able to find a nice balance between Carol’s stoicism and emotional vulnerability which so many people have criticized before! She also went about Carol’s regret beautifully with raw and heartfelt interactions that push said character to correct her mistakes as a hero and as a human.

And let us not forget about the outstanding performances from Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani as Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan. The charisma of Monica Rambeau and the creative handling of her powerset is one that I will hold close to my heart. And the STAR that is Kamala khan and her family is one element that stole my heart early on in the film!

This movie deserves its flowers and it’s unfortunate that the writing had to weigh it down so much. I’m fucking OVERJOYED and grateful that I was able to experience this movie in the theaters—and to have theorized for a good six months on end!

It is going down as one of my top 5 mcu movies, not because it was perfect, but because of my attachment to the cast and the characters. They knocked my positive reception up 30 notches because of the hard work and the un-fucking-deniable chemistry! I know everyone may not agree with my sentiments, but I don’t care because this is deeper than box office success and audience reactions. Yes, It is unfortunate that my happiness wasn’t shared much, but what can I do now other than enjoying it as the phenomenon it is? 🤷🏾‍♀️

Why I Hate Suffs.

Spoiler alert, but in the movie “10 Things I Hate About You”, Kat Stratford reads a poem in front of her class in which she mentions all the reasons why she hates a guy and at the end she says “But mostly, I hate the way I don't hate you. Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.” And, well, that’s exactly why I hate Suffs.

I really tried hating Suffs. I live on the opposite side of the continent from the Music Box Theater. On the side where we consider ourselves “Americans” just by living on this land, even if we don’t live in the wealthiest country and where Christmas is spent wearing shorts and eating by the pool. Because of that, seeing Suffs this year was not an option for me. I love musical theater with every part of my being, but I’ve learnt that I have to ignore certain shows if I don’t want to spend months being sad because I can’t see them.

The problem was that I knew I was going to like Suffs, even if just a little. So my plan was to hate it instead. I believed every lie I read on the Internet about it that would help me with it. I ignored the cast album even when Spotify thought I should try listening to it. I didn’t even check the reviews when they came out because what would I do if they were good? 

Everything was going perfectly, I convinced myself that Suffs was the worst show on Broadway, the kind that deserves bad reviews and empty seats. But then, I watched the Tony awards and I saw Shaina Taub win her second Tony of the night and curiosity got to me. The following day, I listened to the Cast Album for the first time. 

Now, because I don’t live near Broadway, most of the knowledge I’ve gotten about shows comes from listening to cast albums. I’m one of those people who believe that music and lyrics are one of the most important parts of a musical. If they aren’t good, I don’t care if you put the Empire State Building on stage, I will not like the show. If you don’t make me feel something through words and sound, you won’t get my attention. 

The first song I listened to was “Let Mother Vote” and it got my attention. Then everything else came and I just knew I was screwed. There was no way I was going to hate that musical after listening to the full album. It was smart, it had different styles, and it spoke to me in a unique way. Now, I wish everyone was willing to listen to it speak to them.

Suffs doesn’t tell my story, it doesn’t even tell the story of my ancestors. But even so, it fills my body with an array of emotions and my eyes with tears every time I listen to it. It would have been great if it had been a boring, educational show about politics. I would have been able to hate it. But the thing is that it’s so much more than that. 

It’s a show that made me realize that women are not powerless like some people make us think we are. It’s convenient for them that we buy that lie, but it’s simply not true and Suffs proves it by showing the achievements of women who were deemed insane just because they wanted to be heard and seen. Women who not only believed in themselves, but also in collective power. They believed in having each other’s backs when the world turned theirs to them. Suffs showed me that we don’t have to be the same person, or think alike, to be able to fight for what is right. It showed me that even when we think we are alone, a woman next to us will hold up the sign and march with us. Women are powerful, especially when we are united. Especially when we decide to show the world that we are. 

I wish I’d been able to hate Suffs. If I had, I wouldn’t have cried on Friday learning the news that the show will be closing in January. I wouldn’t be so mad at people who believed lies and built their opinions on nothing and won’t give it a chance when it’s such a relevant show -even if that was my original plan. I wish I could yell in their faces and ask them to pay attention, because if there’s a musical that needs to be seen and heard by everyone, it’s this one. 

I recently saw a video of their cast album presentation and I cried seeing women from different generations there. That’s what Suffs is to me, a musical that’s not about being a certain age or from a certain historical time or from a specific country, it’s about being a woman. We know what that’s about, we know it’s not easy, but we are powerful, we are not alone and we have to keep marching for the ones that came before and the ones that will come, we can do it. I just love Suffs.

Hehe hi Anny sorry I’m basically stealing your reimagining format… let me know if you want me to change it

Anyways hi! Inspired by so many amazing Wish reimaginers (yes that’s a word shut up), mainly @gracebethartacc/@gracebeth3604 and the aforementioned @annymation, I decided to post my own rewrite! This being the character details.

Now, unlike the prior AU Ashas, my Asha acts less like a Cinderella and more of a… Kusco. If you catch my drift.

But don’t worry! Our girl is going to go through some major character development!

But first… let’s get to meet her!

Princess Asha Arabella Arman is the heir to the throne of Rosas, the kingdom of wishes

It was founded by none other than her adopted father, Magnus Arman

She was raised by Magnus and Amaya for the past 8 years, and has been coddled quite a bit

All three of the Armans lost their homes to to the evil Stars, so Asha is against everything to do with Star magic

Just like the movie, Asha is 17 years old, and can’t wait until she turns 18 and can wish to become a great magician like her papa

No matter how hard she tries, wish magic doesn’t work for Asha, something she finds extremely frustrating

When this happens, she has a tendency to lash out and snap at people

Many servants have been fired for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but they understand

At least, the older generation does

Stars destroyed their homelands with their greedy magic, and Asha just wants to be as great as her parents

Though… they do think she could be nicer about it

Asha’s parents are always quick to come to her rescue and smooth things out after her temper blows up, rehiring staff and gently reprimanding Asha

They’re not the best parents but like they adopted her when she was 9, they don’t know how to deal with kids

Still, they love Asha as their own

Gonna get more into the king and queen of Rosas in part ii, back to Asha!

Becaude her parents are such great heroes, Asha feels very strongly that the citizens of Rosas should be treating them as if they are the most grand royalty ever

And as their daughter, she should be awarded some of the same privileges

Except none of the teenagers her age seem to like hanging around her, always calling her snobby and self-centered

Excuse me? She was not self centered! Asha just believed her kingdom deserved the best, and their rulers even better! Obviously!

Backstory

So my rewrite’s epilogue is posted already, but imma put her angst here too anyways~

Stars used to help people fulfill their own wishes, until one day they got lazy and started simply granting them instead

This method messed with the system and drove the Stars crazy, mad with power, and they started destroying kingdoms to get more magic

Little Asha’s village was unfortunately one of the victims

Sakina and Tomás barely had time to react before the glowing streaks of light crashed through their roof

Screams echoed through the chaos, and giant hands made of twilight ink scooped up villagers

Tomás and Sakina grabbed their little girl and huddled over her protectively as another blast of scorching light exploded through their roof

When the dust settled, and the harsh glow had faded away, there was only one sound left in the village

The sobbing of a 9-year-old girl, crying and begging for her parents to wake up

That’s when Magnus came across Asha, and took her under his wing

He could fight away Stars, so Asha stuck with him

It took a WHILE for her to learn that Magnus wasn’t going to harm her, but hey, Magnus had her back through it all

After he and Amaya founded Rosas, Asha was reassured that she would never have to see a Star destroy everything she loved ever. Again.

Oh, Asha, if only you weren’t the protagonist of your story

*Ahem* So I did a bit of a deep dive into Asha’s design in the “pilot” over here BUT for her fully updated design today, notes below (a lot of it copy-pasted from here)

Asha’s concept art was inspired by Moroccan and Amazigh fashion, so @mythartist21 added a bunch of inspiration from that in her design

Our girl has her hair accessories back!

I gave her fuller lips and a longer nose bc we only had Jasmine for the nose rep in Disney Princesses, and she’s Afro-Hispanic! Show off her black features!

I also darkened her skin bc… I get that people from North Africa can have lighter skin, heck, Pepa from Encanto showed good rep for the lighter skinned Colombians! But like… we only have one other black princess. Let’s show off that skin color diversity

She also has wider shoulders, a bigger chest, neck, and waist, bc she’s not white but also WOMEN WITH MUSCLES>>>

Asha isn’t super jacked but she does have muscle defining and I want to write in a scene where she has no sleeves on so we can appreciate her arms

RatLD had Namaari’s back and my bisexual ass needs some more women to simp for

Eyeshadow as a reference to Elsa but also I felt she needed some color on her face. Miiiight change it later on when I add in her hair beads but for now she has eyeshadow

Gonna keep the many Rosas symbols bc she’s the princess of the kingdom, what do you expect?

Also she just looks older in general (even though she’s still seventeen like canon!Asha) which I think lends itself to her royal status idk

I TRIED to draw Asha with her fine braids, but people were complaining that canon!Asha looked too much like Isabella Madrigal, and with TFS!Asha having darker skin + longer nose structure + more haughty personality? Yeah, I gave Asha back some body in her hair

Idk I tried to make them look like the braids from this concept art ⬆️ (imagine they’re like this… I did the art at like 3am okay)

I HC that Asha’s canon outfit is her younger self’s outfit, down to the detailed braids done lovingly by Sakina

But after the incident with the stars…

Let’s just say Amaya tries her best, and Asha appreciates it

Is Barbie A Joke To Critics?

Just a week ago I wrote an article about the Barbie movie and how it was not only misunderstood but also overlooked when it comes to its deep meaning. We’ve had people like Jo Koy mocking the movie and comparing it to Oppenheimer which is a movie inspired by real events of our past, not only that but the winning song was I’m Just Ken, that alone should show just how little critics care to take what the movie teaches us and use it in the real world.

And we’re back at it. As you know, the nominations for the Oscars have been released. You’d be surprised to see that neither Margot Robbie (the main actress who interpreted Barbie) nor Greta Gerwig (the director of Barbie) got nominated in their categories. Speaking of the directors’ category, Greta is not new to being snubbed by the Oscars, it had already happened with Little Women. The only difference is that in 2020 there were no women nominated as best director, this year we have a female director who’s been nominated and that’s Justine Triet with Anatomy of a Fall, which is not bad. What’s laughable is the fact that Barbie has won the Golden Globes Award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and yet its director is not taken seriously.

And we’re not even talking about any film, to this day Barbie has made 1.45 billion U.S. dollars worldwide which makes it the best movie debut for a female director. 

Margot Robbie didn’t get nominated as best actress although her performance as Barbie was absolutely iconic, she really brought Barbie to life in a unique way that not many actresses could’ve achieved. If you thought it couldn’t get any worse, let me tell you that Ryan Gosling (the actor who interpreted Ken) got nominated as Best Supporting Actor. That is fair, Ryan did an amazing job at portraying Ken, he really made his character funny and entertaining, he earned his nomination and I’m sure everyone is happy that he was one of the two nominees for Barbie. 

But fans were not the only ones who were disappointed, Ryan Gosling himself commented on the matter and showed his displeasure. Here are his words:

“I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films. And I never thought l’d being saying this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken.

But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film.

No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius.

To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.

Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history. Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees.

Having said that, I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film.”

As Ryan said, the only woman who got nominated is America Ferrera who had an impactful role in the movie, her monologue about women and every hardship that they have to face because of society has become viral. Her character represents women, any women, and she did an outstanding job that earned her the nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The only shame is that she’s the only woman who got the privilege of being nominated for a movie that talks about feminism and how women don’t have the same treatment as men.

The Oscars proved Barbie right once again.

I'm glad that BNHA ended with no canon pairing (I remember in one of your post, that you also hope BNHA have no canon pairing, right?). Did you hear what anti BKDK and anti Bakugou said? That because of "loud" BKDK shippers (including me), Hori scared to made Izuku/Ochaco canon. Are they serious? It's a het ship, cutest couple (yes, even if I'm BKDK shipper, I can say that IzuOcha is a cute ship), and one of the best dynamic in the series. Well, let the haters hate, right?

Oh, right, for "Send Fandom", can I ask for BNHA? Thanks, Kiya....

I am doing fine, thank you! For the rest of my response, it's below the cut.

The first character I first fell in love with: Izuku easily became my favorite when I saw just how much of a wild card he was in season 2 (I watched that first). Favorite green boy! Then Miruko came into the picture and she hopped right there, tied as my number one favorite with Izuku.

The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: You know what, I'm giving it to Burnin here. I already liked her, but I didn't realize just how much I would favor her as the story went on. It's not even because I ship her with Miruko (for me I gotta like the character, shipping comes later). It's because you gotta applaud her for even having the job she has. I think about how much harder it is for her to even be a sidekick to a high ranked hero and think "damn, okay, where is her award"?

The character everyone else loves that I don’t: Hawks. I don't hate him, I do like Hawks. But if I had to nominate a character for "coolest character" I would not put him on the list. Dabi also goes here. Again, don't hate the character, but... unpopular opinion, Dabi's "dance" was just him having the energy of someone who thinks he can dance but can't, but you applaud his efforts.

The character I love that everyone else hates: Okay, I haven't really seen hate for her like that, but I actually like Curious! Out of all the members of her group, I found that she was the most entertaining of the bunch. I stand on saying if she had been kept alive, she would have been lethal on the two big fights.

The character I used to love but don’t any longer: Ooh, I don't think there's a character that applies here for me. Most characters I like are still characters I like.

The character I would totally smooch: You already know Miruko is that answer. But I also will say Inko deserves a kiss, best mom. Rock Lock and his wife, they get kisses. Tensei, my birthday twin, best bro, adore him. Yoichi, kiss him, too.

The character I’d want to be like: I actually had to think about this one. Hm... okay, I got it! Here's an unexpected answer. You know that electric lady from the second movie who looks like she could be related to Denki? Her, I would like to be her. I want electric powers. It would have been easy to say Denki, I know. But I remembered her.

The character I’d slap: *breathes in, breathes out* Okay, quite a bit characters could go here. But if there is one person that isn't like "a bad guy" that I would slap without hesitation... it would be X-Less. I'm sorry, his dumbass move of still sitting there instead just picking up Shigaraki's unconscious body, mind you, costs lives! Exactly what was the reason he sat there?! Okay, he destroyed the machine AFTER MIRUKO did so, good. BUT HE STILL SAT THERE!

A pairing that I love: BurnBunny (Burnin x Miruko) undoubtedly. Proud shipper here, can't convince me otherwise. They are dating and then married during and after the story.

A pairing that I despise: So, you know how Miruko and Izuku are my favorite two, right? Yeah, I LOATHE them as a ship. Despise, disgusted by, I seethe being reminded that is a ship people actually like. It wasn't even a ship I even thought of at all until someone commented on my fic asking if I will write an explicit chapter of those two. UH, NO! I actually hate typing in Miruko's name sometimes when I post a new fic because it's one of the first pairings I see.

SEND ME A FANDOM

Like, alright, if you don't think the ending is all that good, that's fine. But folks were making the ending seem like it was like the worst ending of all time. Oh, please! "The ending is rushed." You know what, based take, I guess, but I would want to rush the ending and get it over with because of this fandom. Not satisfied? Could care less!

And I did, in fact, say that I preferred an ending with no ship confirmed. I believed I post about it nearly two years actually!

"The BkDks were loud and forced Horikoshi---" If shippers had that kind of power many other shonen before MHA would have went totally different. If Horikoshi really was "scared and forced" to make BakuDeku canon, they would have kissed on page. If Horikoshi wanted to make IzuOcha canon, on Izuku's side, he would have developed it more. I knew from the very beginning, Horikoshi wasn't going to do the classic "male/female lead ship canon" thing.
