I think I remember you saying you did your grad thesis on canning. If that’s correct, what university did you attend? I’m currently working on my MA in archaeology but I’m afraid my disabilities will prevent me from working. Since my interest is food ways, I’m considering a history PhD. Hence my question. You can answer privately if you prefer. Thanks!
(Hope it's okay that I answered publicly -- I think this might be one where the readership can be a resource, since I can't D: )
I'm afraid you've been led astray! My graduate thesis was for theatre, it was actually on masked performance in world cultures. I think you're thinking of my tumblr essay on canning, which unfortunately was just the result of being a super curious person who likes food and warned everyone ahead of time that he wouldn't be citing sources. I've often thought of doing that essay up as a book with historical sources and all, but the research is daunting (it involves a lot of quantitative measuring of non-quantitative stuff).
You can definitely do a doctorate in food history, but I'm afraid I don't know the best places to go to get one (much as I would LOVE TO myself). I would take a look at the authors of microhistories surrounding food -- "Cod" or "A History Of The World In Six Glasses" and similar -- and see where they went. Barring that, I'd look at doctoral programs where they have an explicit interest in fostering unusual research/study.
Readership, if you know of a good food history program feel free to chime in! Remember to answer in comments or reblogs, as I don't post asks sent in response to other asks.

I know your thing is whaling and not so much passenger ships, but do you know the easiest way to find old passenger manifests from several centuries back? For genealogy reasons. Thanks!
I don’t I’m afraid—especially if we’re looking at several centuries ago! I’d look at the manuscript collections of museums/libraries specific to the region that you’re hoping to do research in. And in national archives. Posting this in case anyone who follows me might be more helpful.
#and i mean there’s like….ancestry dot com but I imagine if you’re doin genealogy you’ve already trawled that#baconcupcake#asks

Name thing: I didn’t realize Joy was your real name. I thought it was an internet/pen name
I still have my birth name; it helps keep things separated in terms of *gestures* all of this. But Joy is my chosen name and one I’ve been using for 15 years, so I prefer people to use that one :)

Hi! I have a question about your book: is it child friendly? Could my 10yo read it or would you advise against it? I downloaded it but won’t have the chance to read it until after the semester ends. Thanks!
Err, I don’t think it’s suited for children. I mean, there’s no explicit sex, but there is explicit violence, and the whole story revolves around a genocide and the death of children. I’d say it would be okay for 15 and up.

Ambien Reid, why does this cookie recipe call for mushrooms? (Sending you a pic through DMs)
Accept the inevitable.
But I know a mycologist so I’ll ask her.

To be honest, I think the way you portray the characters is enlightening. For me, being American, I find that PoC are extremely under and misrepresented in movies, shows, books, and other forms of media. The fact that your view of Crow as a person of color is extremely powerful and breaks the cultural norms of multiple cultures.
oh man, i don’t know if i’m doing all that. but i’m glad he’s had an impact on you!
thankyou, i’m glad you appreciate Crow :) i have to wonder if this whole thing wouldn’t be such a mess if i just.. drew the whole cast. then it’d be pretty darn obvious i wasn’t stereotyping, even if no one knew the characters. White and PoC and Asian characters abound.
thankyou very much! i’m glad he’s meaningful to you ^-^

baconcupcake replied to your post “I had a crazy dream about you last night. You were helping me decipher...”
Hey, it’s me, dream anon. So “Jerry” was a 30-something white dude with light brown hair, about 5’9, and a bit on the chunky side. If that’s not what you look like then it was def an imposter hahah
JERRY, THAT IMPOSTOR! Always making trouble for me!
daroos replied to your post “As if the daily 9am anxiety and 11am tension headaches going away...”
SO HAPPY YOU ARE AT A BETTER PLACE
ME TOO. Also Roos, combined with your icon, this comment was like Samantha Carter YELLING POSITIVITY AT ME and it was gr9.

Not that I'm anyone, but I think you're really terrific, too.
Aw, thank you! I mean, I usually have pretty good self esteem, relatively speaking, but it’s just nice to have outside confirmation once in a while!
drivemetogeek replied to your post “As if the daily 9am anxiety and 11am tension headaches going away...”
Yay Sam! This reminds me of something I try to remember to do with coworkers who really stand out.... email them kudos and CC their boss. That way they get the direct compliment, the boss gets a heads up their employee is awesome, and they know their boss just heard that. Everybody wins!
Yes! I’m actually in a position now where I can praise people I’m working with to their bosses and it has meaning, so I’ve been passing along praise where I can. It’s nice to be able to say to someone that I appreciate their work and have it get up the chain to their manager.
shawkela replied to your post “As if the daily 9am anxiety and 11am tension headaches going away...”
Sam, we been knew,as the kids say.
Aw, thank you. It wasn’t like I didn’t think very highly of myself (LOL) but it’s just nice to know that it’s real and visible to others.
eandh99 replied to your photo “There is no greater pleasure of the flesh than climbing into a bed...”
Might I recommend the electric mattress cover? It reheats the ENTIRE bed and then you shut it off when you get into bed. Especially wonderful for sure backs
Oh yes! That’s what I have. They are THE BEST.
the-rainbow-jen replied to your post “The cryptids are super mad that I went away to Friendsgiving and left...”
How do they handle your absence for work? Or is it just you dared to deviate from the routine?
Well, they tend to know when I’m going to work versus when I CLEARLY SHOULD be home but AM NOT -- if I leave at odd times or leave when their collar is off, etc. In this case, I said goodbye to them at a weird time, came back for like 5 minutes (I forgot something), left again, and then didn’t return until late evening. I think honestly they get mad mostly at the disruption to routine; it’s okay if I leave when I’m SUPPOSED to leave, but not at any other time.

@baconcupcake replied to your post: im trying to decide what to post for wip wednesday...
“And then as Aziraphale [REDACTED] a soft moan escaped from his lips. Crowley grinned, [REDACTED] and gently continued to [REDACTED]. “‘Like that angel?’ He whispers coarsely into Aziraphale’s ear, as he gripped his hair with one hand and [REDACTED].”
OMFG the whole darn thing would be redacted

About Good Omens, when Madame Tracy and Pepper both reply to Death’s “goodbye gentlemen” with “cheek” what does that mean? As an American I don’t understand. Thank you :)
So when you scoff at someone and say “cheek” like that, you’re usually calling them out on being rude. In this instance presumably because he referred to them as “gentlemen” meaning he either erased their gender, or just didn’t bother to include them in the part they played in helping to stop the apocalypse.
Basically a very British way of just going “RUDE” lol
