Was darf der User noch entscheiden?

Microsoft hat seit einigen Jahren einen Sparkurs eingeschlagen. Zumindest was die Entwicklung neuer eigener Betriebssysteme anbelangt. Es gab noch Zeiten, wo fast jedes Jahr (oder alle 2-3 Jahre) ein neues OS veröffentlicht wurde. Das machte neugierig auf neue Funktionen und neuen Look in der Umgebung von Office-Anwendungen, Games und vielen anderen digitalen Kommunikations- und Gestaltungshorizonten. Darüber habe ich in meiner Inaugural Disseration zum Wandel der Bildästhetik (Aachen: Shaker 2005) bereits geschrieben.

Seit einigen Jahren bleiben sichtbare Innovationen aber verdeckt, die Idee des “Neulands” oder der neuen Wahrnehmung mit dem alltäglichen Computer bleibt aus. Kleinste optische Veränderungen der Icons und auch sonst wenig neue Impulse mögen Windows 10 und 11 vermitteln mit ihren großen Jahresupdates.  Auf mich wirkt das so, als ob diese Windows Versionen schon seit vielen Jahren so bestehen. 

Aber wird es insgesamt besser? Das vergleichsweise kleine “Upgrade” zu Windows 11 hat nicht viel mehr Performance gebracht, keinen “neuen” Look. Manchmal denke ich sogar, die “guten” Stärken und Gebrauchskonventionen leiden. 

Ich schleife seit Windows 7 und den Folgederivaten dies System nunmehr bis zur Version Windows 11 ein sich auftürmendes Windows mit mir rum. Dies ist oder war möglich durch diverse Backupsysteme (Acronis und diversen Festplatten), aber nach der Verweigerung meiner Backupsoftware kam ich ins Stutzen. Mein vorletztes Windows Backup belief sich auf ca. 140 GB, das letzte auf 270 GB, ohne jedoch wesentlich viele neue Programme installiert zu haben. Das machte mich stutzig und nachdenklich. Auf der Suche nach Details ist mit AppData aufgefallen, ziemlich aufgebläht und Daten lastig. Reste auch aus alten Versionen? Hier kann ich nicht viel aussagen. Aber das Resultat hat mich dazu bewogen, ein Windows Reset zu machen. Und das war nicht schlecht. Mit einem sehr abgespeckten Windows 11 (ca. 20 GB) habe ich eine Anzahl an Programmen installiert und bin im Moment bei ca. 70 GB gegenüber 270 GB (einige Programme fehlen noch). 

Aber zurück zu WIndows 11: auffällig ist die Rücknahme der Drag & Drop Funktion von Apps in die Taskleiste. Vor allem, in der Installationschronik zuvor, die Notwendige Vergabe eines PIN’s für die Anmeldung (diese konnte nicht “abgelehnt werden). Schwierig wird es dann, wenn man z.B. “anmeldefrei” ins OS (Operating System/Betriebssystem) kommen will. Ganz ohne geht es wirklich nicht so leicht. Da macht es Microsoft dem Laien sehr schwer. Durch Zufall habe ich einen Beitrag gefunden, der etwas Abhilfe schafft. Kurz zusammenfasst: es wird nicht besser, sondern viel schlechter. Warum? Die Entwickler, die ja nicht jedes Jahr ein neues OS herausbringen müssten, hätten ja etwas mehr Zeit, um "Optimierungen" zu programmieren. Aber das wird wohl auch auf die Sparschiene gelegt. Schade...

5 Factors to Evaluate Before Selecting Backup Software

But the major drawback of this system is that each backup is time-consuming since the same data is copied and stored each time. Differential Backup: After the first full backup, this system stores all the changes that were made since the last full backup. This system uses much less storage space in comparison with Full system backup, although the restores are also slower and more complicated. Incremental Backup: After the first full backup, this system stores only those changes that were made since the last backup has been executed. The incremental backup system utilizes the least storage space when compared to Full system backup and Differential backup, while its restores are the slowest. It is critical to determine the model you wish to implement into your business.

3.  Security and Recovery

 Just storing the data on an external server does not protect it from damages. Therefore it is essential that your backup software offers additional security for the data. Several software offers encryption to protect the data when it leaves your command. Encrypted data requires a password to be accessed, thereby assuring that the data remains useless for an unauthorized person. Inquire about the level of encryption provided by your vendor.

Look for a provider that offers protection against ransomware along with basic security measures. Moreover, study the disaster recovery strategies implemented by the backup software. In case of any disaster, how soon can your vendor recover your data as well as what are the possibilities of data loss? Magical free sky power I just love solar. As I've said numerous times before, the grid isn't real stable where I live. So for a long time all I had was my backup batteries in the basement that went to several outlets that were installed only for backup. Now it's solar. It's a closed system and can't harm utility workers because it's not hooked to the power grid at all. This means that during an outage I have light, interwebs, and I can charge my devices. Zehn Minuten lang lebe ich in der Zukunft und speichere meine Daten nur noch in der Cloud, aber dann

Irgendwo lese ich – nicht zum ersten Mal – von der Dropbox-Option “Smart Sync”, bei der Daten nur noch remote gespeichert werden und nicht mehr lokal. Da die 500 GB SSD-Speicher in meinem Macbook fast voll sind und sich das arme Gerät schon seit Monaten darüber beschwert, erscheint mir diese Möglichkeit immer attraktiver.

Zuerst muss ich – auch das nicht zum ersten Mal – durch Versuch und Irrtum rausfinden, wo am Mac der “option key” ist, um in die Dropbox-Einstellungen zu gelangen. Warum können die Leute, die Anleitungen schreiben, nicht einfach sagen, dass es sich um die Taste handelt, auf der “alt” steht?

Dann schalte ich “Smart Sync” ein und erzähle der Techniktagebuchredaktion davon: “Es fühlt sich sehr gefährlich an. Hat damit jemand von euch Erfahrung?”

“Cloud storage bei wackligem Internet. What could possibly go wrong?”, sagt Virtualista, und, naja, den Gedanken hatte ich auch schon. Insbesondere, da mein Internet in den letzten Wochen besonders wacklig war. Auch die anderen tragen Geschichten aus der Arbeitswelt von Problemen durch solche Speicherverfahren bei. Ich schalte Smart Sync wieder aus.

Mein Speicherplatzproblem ist wieder ungelöst. Ich forsche nach, ob ich die SSD vielleicht gegen eine größere austauschen kann. Eine neue mit 1 TB würde um die 200 Euro kosten. Es wäre das erste Mal, dass ich ein physisches Speichermedium im Terabytebereich kaufe. Gleich der erste Googletreffer empfiehlt allerdings, vorher ein Update auf mindestens MacOS 10.13 zu machen, weil die meisten neueren SSDs Treiber brauchen, die in älteren Betriebssystemen fehlen. Ich bin noch bei MacOS 10.12 und falle darauf kein zweites Mal rein: Nach dem letzten leichtfertig durchgeführten macOS-Update vor ungefähr zehn Jahren habe ich einen neuen Laptop gebraucht, weil das neue Betriebssystem die Hardware des alten überforderte. In dem Moment, in dem man merkt, dass das Update ein Fehler war, gibt es nämlich keinen Weg zurück (oder nur einen, der noch viel komplizierter ist als alles andere).

Ich lese nach, wie ich das Problem beim letzten Mal (2016, die Festplatte hatte 256 GB) gelöst habe. Und warum ich es überhaupt hatte:

Ein Tool zur Visualisierung des Festplatteninhalts namens Grand Perspective brachte zum Vorschein, dass ein Viertel meiner Festplatte von alten Zip-Dateien belegt ist, die noch aus einer Backblaze-Datenwiederherstellung von 2013 stammen. Ich traue mich nicht, sie zu löschen, denn woher soll ich wissen, ob ich sie nicht aus einem guten Grund aufbewahrt habe?

Backblaze ist ein automatisches Backupsystem, das mich schon dreimal vor Datenverlust gerettet hat. Grand Perspective befindet sich nicht mehr auf meinem aktuellen Gerät, es ist mitsamt dem Vorgängerlaptop gestohlen worden (den “Applications”-Ordner sichere ich nicht mit). Ich recherchiere und finde ein viel schöneres, DaisyDisk, mit kostenloser Trial-Version:

Die Lösung beim letzten Mal bestand im Kauf von USB-Speichersticks, auf die ich diese alten Zip-Dateien verschoben habe.

“Aber wenn ich Daten nur auf einem USB-Stick habe, dann könnte der ja kaputtgehen und Backblaze hätte seine Daten dann nicht erfasst”, denke ich in der Redaktion nach. Die Daten von USB-Sticks möchte Backblaze nämlich leider nur unter bestimmten Bedingungen speichern:

“Backblaze will backup external USB and Firewire hard drives that are detached and re-attached as long as you remember to re-attach the hard drive at least once every 30 days.”

Ich bezahle Backblaze aber dafür, dass ich nicht alle 30 Tage an irgendwas denken muss. Wenn ich ein Mensch wäre, der alle 30 Tage an etwas denken kann, wäre ich doch nicht bei Backblaze! Dann hätte ich eine spottbillige externe Festplatte und würde darauf gewissenhaft Backups anlegen.

Markus Winninghoff schlägt vor: “Du könntest so einen Stick nehmen und ihn festkleben.” Er verlinkt Bilder von winzigen Speichersticks. “Gibt es sogar mit 512 GB. Ich hab einen Dongle in der Größe in meinem Rechner stecken. Der ist da immer drin. Hatte ich schon vergessen, dass der da drinsteckt.”

Ich bestelle für 83 Euro einen fingernagelgroßen USB-Stick, der meinen Speicherplatz auf insgesamt 1 TB verdoppeln wird. What a time to be alive!
