see i love the backrooms as a concept. so much. and the popular imagery and works that people create do resonate with me, and i enjoy every ‘cliche’ and predictable twist of people’s own interpretations of the concept.
but at the heart of it, i really enjoy the backrooms minus the monsters. the concept of being stranded in an endless, impossible plane of not-quite-existence, entirely alone. maybe the environment feels malicious, maybe you find yourself suddenly displaced or fall asleep in one room only to wake up in another, all of that is fine. but i don’t want creepy crawlies.
i’ll take them on occasion - kane pixel’s the rolling giant is one of my favorite short films ever, actually - but for the most part, i need the horror to come from the devastating loneliness. that feeling of being lost with no hope of finding your way back. the eerily otherness of a world made entirely of things painfully familiar, hilariously mundane, but never welcoming. you will see nothing but the wood panel walls of your childhood living room for miles, and not once will you feel at home.

Always liked the way you looked
With blackberry juice dripping
down your chin
You know too much now, baby

Dream record — log 32 (archived)
Subject: Children of the Dreamscape
Written by: Dr. Ambrose - Head of Dreamscape Research and Exploration Agency (DREA)
The Dreamscape is an unpredictable place, as we all know. It is home to various of entities unknown to even our most avid researchers. One of the most commonly encountered entities in the Dreamscape is the Children of the Dreamscape.
As the name suggests, they are humanoid entities that the Dreamscape claims as its own. They are approximately the size of a ten year old child and wears an off white gown. That is all what normal about them. They have something akin to bandages wrapped around where their eyes should have been, their mouths seem to have the consistency of melted wax.
These entities are often seen roaming among dreams, they are rather docile and will interact with our researchers once encountered.
Additional information: by Researcher Florian — Research Department 8
They have a really strange, dreamy voice, as if it was taken out from a distant memory that you have forgotten about. That is one uncanny factor that makes the Children of the Dreamscape so terrifying every time one encounters us on our exploration.
Another factor is that they can mimic voices, tones, and accents from the people they have interacted with. One nearly gave us a collective heart attack when it spoke to us with the voice and manner of one of our researchers.
God help us all if they know how to shapeshift.

Almost forgot that last night I drew something based off a weird dream I had months ago where I was watching a movie about a guy who came home one morning to find a bunch of construction workers in the middle of building a "backrooms style storage closet" in the middle of his livingroom.
I don't remember too much of what happened but I recall the guy's family took a look around after the construction was finished and just vanished completely afterwards, the rest of the film was this dude doing his best to barricade the huge hole in the wall while the edges of it started to rot, also his neighbour kept telling him he was overreacting to all this.

Random thoughts while on the bus #1
I think the reason I truly love the concept of the backrooms, liminal spaces and liminality in general is because they are far from scary or unnerving for me; don't get me wrong I love all the creepy lore about the entities that border on the creepypasta genre as a whole or rather as "the campfire tales of the internet" as I lovingly like to call them, but there's something intrinsically sad and beautiful about liminality.
The fact that there's no destination to be reached, that there's no way out of the endless corridors of moldy yellow wallpaper and fuzzing neon lights, the endless suburbia or the poolrooms, is very similar to a lot of people's real lives in the sense that they spent years in waiting for something to happen, for a destination to be reached; that may be anything, from working at a job you don't like till the prospect of a better one arises and the kind of excitement and anxiety one feels as they change the course of their life; from dating and/or hooking up in the hopes of meeting that one true love the movie industry (falsely) taught you to wish for; from the change of your body to someone you have no memories with but with whom the best-and worst- memories might yet be created.
Liminality is present to most people's lives whether they realise it or not; and for most of them the first instinct is to get out of that twilight zone between being and not being, happening and not happening; but for some of us, liminality is all we know to be truly safe: you never know if the destination you so wish to reach is the one you really need to get to; perhaps the life you so seek lies in the waiting, in the travelling, in that zone of grey.

A land line phone center in a remote obscure town
This was home to many a scene of my childhood, to see it now, so changed yet so familiar....abandoned, forgotten, slowly moving towards redundancy, a relic of a time ling past.
