Story Time: . TLDR: I am a proud owner of a HOBO FLATSCREEN SMART TV. . So. . Your girl is back from Puerto Rico. Did she miss the earthquakes? Yes. By 12 hours. . She returns to a very cold, very dark, very wet Seattle. NWJJA has not burned down. Her cats are still snuggly. Her novel is nearly done. The Purple Store is still purple and she is now a size 10 with a toasted coconut tan line. . Everyone is screaming: 'SNOWPACALYPSE 2020' but she don't care. She channels her inner Beyonce and goes to her neighborhood bar, @backfiremoto . . It's been three weeks. The folks are happy to see her. Aurora (Route 99) still smells like pee. All is right with the world. . Then, HE walks in, his funk, a greeting card from Crotch Scratch 9. Hobo Dude; pulling up his pants and STANKIN'. He sits next to yer gurl, STANKIN', asks for a @rainier_beer tallboy and a mug, STANKIN', then tries for .5 seconds to talk to her gurl, but she got on that Sephora DUST repellant. (cont. -) . Over the holidays she learned that beatin' that face (putting on makeup) repels men of a certain socioeconomic level. He turns his back and limps to the turn tables to try and impress the high value female with his hobo vinyl kungfu. . I admit he had very good taste, but he couldn't keep a mix for 5 minutes. #unimpressed . I return to my book while he disappears. . "Where did he go?" a patron asks. . "Something about a TV." Shawn, one of the owners, replies. . "Wait. Is that him? Across the street?" . Kill Bill Vol. 1 is going full force. Yes. He is outside, at the church across the street... with a big screen TV in his hand. Of course I put my book down. This is Aurora. TVs don't just magically appear. . Hobo Dude comes back. With a TV. For me... . But not for free, mind you. . It's tested. It works. He smiles at me and out she comes: 'Hood Jada' aka 'BeBe Brazil' ready to wheel and deal. . "Okay, Mayne. Whatchu want for it?" . "50." . "Naw. 20." . "Dats too low, Mayne." . "Don't know if this is hot or if it works. 20 or kick rocks with your flat." . "K'. 20. You a hard bitch." . "And you a broke #Dusty . When I first moved to North Seattle, I used to walk a lot, especially in the summer. It was marvelous to walk in full daylight at 9 to 10 pm. And Aurora, despite it's nefarious reputation, always had little jewels to see. . The Geese and circus performers around Greenlake. Beth's Cafe, their 12 egg omelet and the line around the block awaiting for it. . Then there were the garages. Foreign cars. Scooters. Motorcycles. Tucked away but exclusive enough that one knew first glance that the Sparks flying from the welding was for show. . Life happens. My walks, sadly, stopped and adulting took their place. Last week I noticed a new sign on the old Motorcycle garage while bussing home. Odd. The two gear heads are making their garage a bar too? That's an interesting theme. . I was wrong. The old motorcycle garage folded and new owners too the space. One part bar. One part motorcycle diy garage. One part event space. Metal. Old Douglas Fir. Classic motorcycles and an Espresso machine they have no clue what to do with. . Kevin, a sharp little man with a knack for chat and a clean haircut , and I yacked it up while watching Dark City (remember that movies? So. Gud. Gurl.) And drinking craft beer. . Hunter, one of the owners, laughed as we debates who was the best Doctor in the Doctor Who series (I said Tom Baker. He said David Tennet. We agreed to disagree) and gave each other knowing nods when we both settled into our fandom of @instaphex (Xtal? Cliffs? Rubber Johnny?). . North Seattle is changing. It's slow, but the eclectic vibe of the urine soaked streets quietly evolves into something wonderfully weird, yet poignant to The 99. . I feel like my taste in watering holes are growing more outlandish the older I get. Bernard's on Seneca. The White Horse Tavern in Pike Place. @thejunkdrawer.seattle in Ballard and now, @backfiremoto . . Simple yet, not so. This is the Seattle that always existed but many forgot. .
