"good strategies until someone fucks up" is the neutral game in smash, yeah (isn't that every fighting game?). i guess it depends on how you define fucking up though, like there's bad positioning and then there's misinputs since melee has no input buffer so playing it is like driving a stickshift car that hates you. if you're good you can put yourself in a position to capitalize on both when the opponent fucks up and not constantly toss out super risky things yourself (either in terms of recovery frames on the move or technical difficulty).
as for the roster/countermeasure issue, i think melee specifically doesn't suffer from it as much just because there are like 6 viable guys and the game's been out for 20 years with no balance patches. there are definitely noob killer moves like falco laser spamming, but once you get to a certain level other people exploit your dependence on that.
ultimate is different though, i see that and it's like ok, this isn't even a competitive game lol
how tf are smash players supposed to talk about their game without like actual consistent frame scenarios. like if im having trouble with say lili im able to verbalize why, this is putting me at X so i cant do that much. in smash youre just like Oh man this guys annoying

Now that we finally got roll back net code I wonder if I can react to Ruby's up special online. In person it's so much easier because of the audio cue. People are always saying they can react to it but I be seeing people miss the reaction to it in person. It's hard. Ruby's burst options are actually unfair and her range is immaculate. I wish Jaune had that kind of range. As a stance character he has better defensive options when his weapon is in shield form and better range when his weapon is in great sword form. But it still has nothing on Ruby. Plus Jaune has no projectiles so it's pretty tough. I gotta tell you the Jaune/Ruby match up has to be worse than 90-10.
At least Jaune's side special is a pretty good anti air. In a game where characters like to jump having anti airs is a pretty solid thing. Not every character has it.
Ruby's disadvantage state is fucking bullshit. She has so many options to escape pressure. She can petal burst like bayonetta's bats within in smash four. Because everyone loved that mechanic.
I think the weakest part of Yang's kit is her recovery. Her semblance is solid. Her damage output is nuts but as soon as she's offstage she is in serious trouble. I like using her neutral air as late as possible as a meaty. It auto cancels and did you know unlike most moves it gets stronger the longer it's out? How nuts is that? I wouldn't be shocked is she had 0 to deaths on most characters. Everything combos into her up special. It's a great combo move as a finisher but a shitty recovery tool.
I think I'd buff Blake's tether grab. It's just too slow. It's reactable. You can dodge it too easily. I'd speed it up to fifteen frames. Her bullet storm is great for edge guarding and getting out of disadvantage but I think it's a little too good. I'd nerf the horizontal range of her guns. And her blade beam is in a weird place. It doesn't feel like it flows with the rest of her kit. Like when am I using blade beam over neutral special? I'm not in edge guarding.
Weiss has to be the best designed character in the game. In my opinion at least. Her semblance is balanced a bit like shulk's neutral special in smash ultimate. It's good but not unstoppable. I like it because it gives her plenty of win conditions. She can play for time dilation if the game goes on too long. She has a solid projectile. I think her light points are very slept on. She has decent range and is in a good position in the meta because she's balanced by her learning curve. I like her recovery and her down throw to back air is a solid bread and butter. Her up air kills at a decent percentage of aura. One of my favorite things to do is use the threat of side special in the air for tomahawks and to shimmy Mercury mains online. She doesn't quite have as much movement as Ruby but she's decently fast. I think the only issue I really can gripe with is her damage output but I guess if you're killing with backair at 90% in every match it doesn't really matter.
Okay, funny concept:
A tag where we just shitpost about RWBY as a fighting game and all the stupid shit that would come from it.
I call it:
Clash Of Remnant Is (Not) A Fair And Balanced Game.
Does this make sense? No.
But is it funny as a concept? Yes.

Smash Fighter Retrospective #6: Kirby
Kirby is so wonderful. His ability to copy others is so intuitive and simple, yet so unique. As a kid, I was instantly in love with Kirby just from Smash Bros. Admittedly, he suffers from a relatively bland moveset when compared to newer characters, but I’m really happy to see him get slightly buffed in Ultimate.
I’ve traditionally never really mained Kirby, but I remember playing him in Smash 3DS right before Ultimate released as a way to practice backairs. Of course, he has a special role in Ultimate’s World of Light mode.
I still don’t go out of my way to play Kirby much, but I always have a lot of fun with his aerials, especially his drilling down-air (multi-hit drill aerials are so fun).
As a kid, I had a weird elitist attitude that Kirby was only for noobs. I think that was mostly because of his down-B where he turns into a rock. Now, I get excited to see Kirby’s new hat every time a new character is revealed. I do wish that his downtilt was the slide from his original games and that he could do the midair air-spit move from his games as well, but I am just happy to see his old dash attack return in Ultimate.

i think marth/fox is better for marths at lower levels bc marth has crazy punishes on fox at most percents, and foxes with subpar spacing can get got by his range pretty easily. so i can see why a lot of people think is super marth-favored (shine spike still too good tho)
oh sure yeah, if you’re a lower level marth that’s practiced cg and platform punishes, marth’s punish on fox is better out the box, and you can feel pretty oppressed by his Big and Long Sword (and hands), but yeah once you get past that element fox blows marth tf up too, and the neutral is much more even than it appears, you just gotta, yknow, not get hit by Big Long Sword And Hands
upair too good too, and usmash, and up tilt, and dash attack, and dtilt, and jab, and uthrow, and backair
fox too good tbh marth doesn’t stand a ghost of a chance

I wanna get better at smash bros but I feel like I’ve hit a kind of skill ceiling for what I can do playing casually. Like I feel like I have some skill when playing offline so I don’t have to worry about lag, and I have a decent amount of knowledge about the game that I don’t always apply correctly, but I think if I want to get better I would need to start getting on a grind to seriously improve.
My current goal is to convert shorthopping completely to muscle memory now that I’ve converted to playing without tap jump on (that was an awkward change since I played with tap jump since brawl) and after that I need to get reverse aerial rush down cuz duckhunt needs backair to kill. I’m definitely at a skill range where I can have fair games with friends and have fun and I can get some good online competitive matches when my WiFi cooperates with me (I’m gonna try to get Ethernet when I go to college in August since I can’t use it at my house) but I do low key want to play competitively. Like it’s a stupid thing to want to do but I really want to test my skills and see if I can actually do well against people who grind the game. And naturally playing against other people off WiFi will make me improve. But it’d probably be stupid of me to do that. But I wanna. But it’s stupid. Aaaaa. Anyway I guess rn I’ll just grind my technical skills until I get a chance to compete. I’m not like super super serious about it but it’d be nice to be a good player and win stuff and it’d be cool to have enough skills to justify like going out to events to try and win. Fuck I’m a nerd lmao. But fuck it. Fuck. Aaaaaaa anyway I’m looking back to playing Isabelle until I can pick up a technically demanding charcater like maybe Ken down the line or greninja. Ah I have a lot of thoughts but I just need to improve technically, I know how neutral and frame data and autocanceling and shit works but I need to learn applying it correctly

So today I am going to be analyzing a game of Super Smash Brothers Ultimate that I played with my friend. For this game it’s important to note that I am the Bowser player, and he is playing Roy. As I go through the replay I am going to be introducing ideas about the game and its mechanics. Anyways lets get into the game. So, one concept I’m going to immediately introduce is neutral. Neutral, in terms of smash gameplay, refers to a state of the game where there is no clear advantage or disadvantage, which pretty much means no one is getting hit or recovering back to stage.
The game starts off with Roy immediately running in and using his neutral air attack, throwing out a large hitbox around Roy to cover a general area, which works and I get immediately get put into disadvantage state and he into advantage state, where I am in hit stun from the attack, and Roy now gets time to follow up with a combo
We are now reset to a semi neutral state, where I am hanging on the ledge, and you can see my character flash for a moment there, meaning that I am invincible for a couple seconds. Hanging on the ledge I am in slight disadvantage because there are only 4 options I can do from here. First option is I can drop off the ledge, which isn’t necessarily a good idea if you don’t have a specific plan. The other options to get back on stage are to do a normal getup, a roll getup, or you can jump. The problem with being on the ledge is that your opponent knows these four options and if ready, can react to these options and punish them.
So, I jump from ledge and try to land with an attack, but Roy reacts and follows up with a combo. I try to escape his combo with a down air attack, but he immediately rushes back in for another hit.
So, Roy as a character wants to rush in and choke you out, keep you in his combos, which is almost exactly what happens in that first stock. Bowser as a character is slower and bigger, so he is less focused on keeping the opponent in a combo and more so on knowing what your opponent is going to do and hard punishing it with a strong attack. So, as I drop off the platform here, and go for a forward air which will miss, and immediately follow up with a down tilt to knock him offstage, and because he is still close off stage, I got for the hard punish on him jumping back up with an attack and take the stock
I then get distracted by the shy guy flying
And we return back to neutral and soon back to my disadvantage where I again try to escape with a downair, and he punishes it and follows up with a combo. I then use a flame breath to keep him back and rack up some damage, and I know hes going to try to jump over it so I react with a forward air. Forward tilt to get him offstage, and I know hes going to do neutral getup as a panic option so I hard punish it with a forward smash attack.
So now you can start to see the ebb and flow of advantage stage, disadvantage state and neutral
Roy then hits me with another combo to put me offstage. I recover back to ledge, and he reads my roll and hit me back off. I then land on the cloud to delay my recovery
Roy right there was just, what we call in the industry, mashing
I take the advantage state and whiff the forward air, and he punishes, putting me back off stage. I return to the ledge, and jump past him for a back air. He now hits me off stage. And now were going to see a scenario in which I am getting ledge guarded, where Roy is guarding the ledge and not letting me return from offstage, he takes the stock.
Next, I am staying at the ledge simply because I want to land on the cloud. Fun fact: The clouds name is Randal.
Then you can see I hit him with a side special to put him off stage, I jump past ledge again with a backair to finish the game
So I would say that most of my flaws in my gameplay was trying to escape disadvantage state, where I usually default to trying down air to get out of his combos, in which he was ready for and would punish. The strengths in my gameplay was that I had some good reads on his options for recovering back to stage, in which I got the punishes, ultimately winning me the game.
