For good luck
Two leaders leave their partners to go to battle - not without a token of their love though
or to put it less dramatically, you give Choji and Ume something for good luck before a fight (separately)
SFW anddddd no other warnings ig
Characters: Umemiya Hajime, Choji Tomiyama
Tomiyama Choji
You're holding two cards left in this UNO match and one happens to be a draw 4. Just as you're about to put in down on the pile, Togame walks into the room carrying Choji's jacket.
"Sorry to interrupt, but it's about time for that fight, Choji." He looks to you apologetically and your boyfriend looks at the clock on the wall.
"Uno," you place your second to last card down and he looks back to the pile.
"Again?" Choji whines drawing four into his now ten card pile. It isn't the first time this round you had him drawing stacks of cards. You think he might just be incredibly bad at the game given how often you win.
"When you get back, the color's green," you say faking grumpiness at the fact that he's leaving right before you secure victory.
"If I win can it be red?" he pouts and furrows his brow. It's his equivalent of puppy dog eyes that he pulls out at least once a day, so although he looks adorable, nose all scrunched in upset, you're used to this ploy. There is no mercy in UNO and he knows that.
"You know you're going to win, and no, it's green." His cheeks are puffed out like a hamster as he puts his jacket on, but his mood switches up and suddenly he's the trusted leader of Shishitoren, ready to lead his guys into their next brawl. He still silly and excited, your little lionheart, as he gets pumped up to fight, but he's a little more serious too. "Choji." Never one to want to interrupt when he's about to go all out, but knowing it wouldn't feel right to let him leave like this, you're standing, waiting for him to remember the small tradition you two began in the beginning of your relationship.
The first time you ever sent him off to a fight, you were so nervous even Choji could tell. He'd said you were really lucky, so if you squeezed him as hard as you could the luck would rub off on him like a charm. You weren't really lucky, but you knew he was practically unbeatable if what Togame told you was to be believed. It did also calm your nerves, so you elected to always send him off this way just in case.
"I almost forgot my hug!" He spins and runs into you, grabbing you in an embrace.
"Big squeeze!"
"Even bigger squeeeeze!" Stretching your words to prolong the hug, you both release the insanely tight holds you had on each other. He's out of the door before you can say anything else, Togame close behind.
Leaving the cards on the stage of the Ori you were playing on earlier, you decide to make a quick trip to the store for snacks. Surely they were gonna be hungry when they got back, right?
Umemiya Hajime
"I'll hold down the fort while you guys are gone," you say, not looking up from the song book. Your boyfriend is the last to leave after hearing there's a fight outside the Karaoke Bar on Keisei Street. Nakamura and his gang were surely already there taking care of whatever troublemakers showed up, but your Furin boys couldn't hear the word fight without running towards it.
"Babe," his voice is strained as he's ready to head out. "can you...y'know?"
"Can I what, Hajime?" You put on an unaffected act, but it's not one you can hold for long. He taps his cheek as he bends towards you, a little bashful now that you're actually looking his way. "What do I get in return for giving you all my hard-earned luck hm?"
"My everlasting love and affection princess," he says bending his knee in front of you in an equally regal display. He places a small kiss on your hand and sees you crack a smile despite your initial play of indifference.
"How could anyone pass up an offer like that," you giggle, giving your prince a good luck kiss on the corner of his mouth as by accident. "You'll get a full one after you're back and in one piece," a hint of warning in your voice as you send him off. You hate when he comes back hurt, even if he says it's not that bad and that you really should see the other guy. A heavy sigh leaves you as you're left alone for whatever amount of time it takes for your boys to return from battle.
Once they're back, more people than had initially left showed up. It seems some of the Roppo-ichiza group heard there was karaoke and decided to tag along dragging some new faces into the room, not that you mind. Umemiya pops in while everyone is saying their hellos and takes his seat next to you again.
"You're back from war huh?"
"Yes ma'am! Can I collect my kisses now?" He's extra clingy, feeling bad that he left you alone for even a short while.  You can see no one is really hurt from the fight save for a few bloody knuckles and swollen cheeks. Ume himself only has a small bruise on his jaw and small cuts on his hands. "Gotta heal you first," you say putting your lips to his knuckles, your intention to kiss every injury being made clearer the farther along you progress. What he doesn't know as you're distracting him is that you've queue'd up 'baby shark' on the karaoke tablet about 20 times as payback for leaving you by yourself.

I finished posting the unabashedly educational Sword Fic.
It includes a detailed (but hopefully beginner-friendly) explanation of all the steps of making a Nichirin blade from a sunny mountain like Mt. Youkou, a touch of swordsmith and metalworker folk lore (including demons), meta about what must make Kimetsu no Yaiba's swordsmithing methods different from real life methods, some character exploration for Haganezuka and his polishing method, vocabulary and additional resources in the chapter notes, and hopefully, an endearing, silly POV character to learn this all through.

#my fics#SWORDS SWORDS SWORDS#would you like a story about the years of background of this fic?#I was not very well-versed in metallurgy until recent years but my study of the Japanese language goes back to#well#longer than some of you may have been around#I always liked samurai and swords for the aesthetic but started to take more of an interest when I lived in Shimane#and on a day when I had a friend taking me around to rural sites associated with a legendary monster she was like#let's go see the sword museum while you're out here#but that museum was closed (it comes back into this story though)#so we went to a different one that no longer exists but that was my first encounter with how much work it takes to make the sword ore#fast forward years later#I am writing this blog and it becomes known as a fun place to read about Japanese culture as seen in KnY (thanks glad you enjoy)#I decide that I must tell people how hard it is to make the ore and finally visit that main museum on a trip back to Shimane#I collect material and struggle to do more research and wrap my head around it#and I write the first version of Teppi's story that focused mostly on the smelting and glazed over the forging and polishing and stuff#meanwhile I am in a job situation I have already long since wanted out of and soon I want out a lot more desperately#job searches were disheartening but then I found THE ONE I WANTED#and on that first interview when I was already like PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE#they asked if there's a Japanese cultural topic I could suddenly explain in great detail if asked#and without mentioning this blog I said I had recently written up something for fun about tatara smelting methods (and they forgot this)#fast forward again and I very happily got the job and was very nervous as I got the rundown on a very large annual nerd project#and when they announced the topics for that year I saw that tatara smelting methods in the region I knew them from was on the list#and I was like#asudyaiusdyuasdyuahduahduhsdhuPLEASE GIVE ME THAT#and i got it and when I went out there for research people were like#...why do you know all this...???????#and since I dared not mention my KnY blog I was like#...I lived in Shimane...#it seems I broke the tags because the rest of the story got cut off but hi yes you get the idea

What are good books about explorers, if I may ask? I'd love to get into some harrowing survival (or just trying to survive) stories.
HI ok these are all heroic age antarctica-centric bc that's all i've had rattling around in my brain for a solid year and a half now so if anyone has non-polar recs pls feel free to throw em in the replies lmao
if we're talking harrowing survival there's nothing more fucked than shackleton's trans-imperial expedition aka endurance and the ross sea party. the classic here is endurance by alfred lansing (and ofc south by ol ernie shackles but i feel like his own account is less approachable to a first time reader) but i also highly recommend the lost men by kelly tyler-lewis for the ross sea party half of the story that often falls to the wayside.
and we can't talk abt shackleton without getting into scott & the terra nova & the race for the pole which WILL take over ur life if u get into it lol. the worst journey in the world by apsley cherry-garrard is required reading (and so is cherry by sara wheeler, possibly my fave biography of all time), and for a more general overview a first-rate tragedy by diana preston is the absolute gold standard. for amundsen ask @roaldamundsen there's the last viking by stephen r. brown which i haven't read yet but i've heard v good things about (nb: u may be recommended roland huntford's books when it comes to amundsen. read them if u want but he's got a Thing against scott which in turn distorts how he approaches amundsen but then again every polar biographer wants to make tender romantic love to their special little guy so)
OH and we can't forget the northern party aka six guys in a hole (NOT sexy) (well–). there are banger first-hand accounts (especially raymond priestley's) but weirdly enough my fave when it comes to this part of the terra nova story is a polar affair by lloyd spencer-davis, which is technically abt the sex lives of adélie penguins. it was the first book i read connected to terra nova and although it leans more popular history than rigorous biography or historical analysis it rly primes u to understand the fricative relationship between the expedition's two intertwined objectives – scientific advancement and imperialist glory – that were the root of most of their issues.
outside of endurance & terra nova i'd be remiss not to rec The gateway book to antarctic history, the madhouse at the end of the earth by julian sancton. i should have put this first bc this is genuinely one of my fave books of all time, polar-related or otherwise. it's a comedy it's a tragedy it's an adventure it's an insight into colonial ambition (although imo this aspect could have been pushed further) it's a romance for two specific guys it could easily be a musical it might be adapted into a tv show or movie in the near future?? it's an absolute trip i rec it to anyone who stands still enough to let me shove a copy in their hands. read madhouse NOW
finally i want to give a shout out to the australasian antarctic expedition which in comparison is less insane than everything else here but it's entirely possible the guy who was once on the australian $100 note ate his dog handler. so like. read alone on the ice by david roberts
(ps. for more boat books see @jesslovesboats's banger posts ✌️⛵️)

[ID: a banner that says "beauty queen on a silver screen." the background image is an Instagram post in progress featuring Light Yagami's face. the title text covers up his eyes. end ID]
in which L investigates the Yagami children's Instagrams
450 words - read on ao3
--
Sayu Yagami’s Instagram page was typical for a 14 year old girl. Chaotic, scattered, uncultivated and authentic. She flashed peace signs with her friends, took out of focus photos of late night concerts, and captured her brother’s worst angles. The latter shots always included a blurry hand reaching to snatch the phone away.
On December 27 at 4:42pm, Sayu had been at the mall with her friends, nowhere near the Yamanote Line. Not proof of innocence, but relevant regardless.
L opened up her story archive - private to most, but not to him. He scrolled back to early December. The day of his face off with Kira, she’d posted “OMG WHATS HAPPENING ON TV???? WHOS THIS L GUY???????” accompanied by a shocked selfie.
Kira would certainly never make a post admitting guilt, but feigning shock to deceive L seemed entirely in character. However, it could just as likely be a genuine reaction. As he scrolled back, he found that this was Sayu’s standard typing style; she loved to abuse caps lock and punctuation.
All in all, Sayu appeared to be a perfectly normal 14 year old girl. She had barely posted about Kira since that first story; it seemed she was more concerned about Hideki Ryuga and jokes her friends told and how annoying her mom was. None of this ruled her out as a suspect, but none of it was particularly damning either.
Next, Light Yagami. His father was shocked that L could consider him as a suspect. He was an incredible student and a loyal son. Until his senior year, he’d volunteered with a local tutoring service and received stellar reviews. His clients described him as kind, understanding, and supportive. Matsuda described him as a good friend, though L took all of Matsuda’s judgements with a heavy grain of salt.
Light Yagami’s Instagram was as perfect as he was. Beautifully composed shots of coffee next to homework. Sheets of notes, every character drawn with clean, crisp strokes, highlighted with pleasant pastels. He never posted his face, but often his hand gripping a pen. He was ambidextrous - naturally or through practice, L wondered.
It was too perfect. It was too clean, too neat.
He had posted three stories in the three years he had the account, all of them wishing Sayu a happy birthday. His sister’s chaos would have shattered his perfect page if he had allowed it to persist past the twenty-four hour mark.
Light had never even deleted or archived a post. He had never posted anything he regretted.
It was obvious that Light spent a considerable amount of time cultivating his reputation. A very useful skill to have as Kira.
L adjusted his mental models. 55%.

Oz AU ⟶ After six years at Lardner Correctional Facility for aggravated assault, Carmen Guerra is out on parole when he begins to experience strange and vivid dreams of another man's life. At night, he wakes up and can see and feel through the body of a man named Miguel Alvarez, an inmate from Oswald Correctional who is on the run toward Mexico after breaking free of prison. What originally seems to be an odd but explainable phenomenon takes a bizarre twist when Carmen learns from an old friend who was incarcerated at Oswald that just two years prior, an inmate by the name Miguel Alvarez had escaped from Oswald, only to die while being captured in the Arizona desert. Having gone weeks of dreaming up this stranger's life, feeling his fear and hunger and paranoia, Carmen can't help but be compelled to do some further digging around, if only to figure out why he subconsciously felt so drawn to this man in the first place. While snooping through reports on the matter, Carmen quickly learns of the suspected foul play in Alvarez's death, a police cover up that no one seems interested in pursuing, and a potential connection to a string of vigilante murders down by the border. That night, he goes to bed and wakes up alone and feeling terrified in the abandoned warehouse that Alvarez had holed away in for sleep. As he watches Alvarez stand, a voice speaks, raspy with disuse, and seemingly aimed at no one in particular. It's Alvarez: "If you're there," he starts, and trails off, mumbling a nervous curse before trying once more. "If you're watching... Carmen, I ain't a dream and I ain't dead, either, not yet. Hope to keep it that way. But I need your help."

So the One Piece brand has been doing radio broadcasts called Strawhat Space (/Mugiwara Space) where they bring in voice actors to chitchat about the series etc, most of the episodes they've featured just the main cast but they've started bringing in VAs for other characters too (one episode was Mayumi Tanaka/Luffy and Tomokazu Seki/Lucci, another was the OG three admirals etc) This week's broadcast featured Ryuuzaburo Ootomo and Yuriko Yamaguchi as Crocodile and Miss All Sunday respectively
Tumblr media
The promotional images for Strawhat Space have been Extremely Adorable and I know I'm a simp but god, this one is so cute
Now unfortunately, while my Japanese listening comprehension is good enough to follow along your average kids anime where the VAs speak clearly and take their turns, yeah, a radio show where the VAs stumble on their words a little and speak over each other is too hard for me to keep up with (not to mention my vocab just not being suited for this kinda thing)
But, if I didn't completely misunderstand Yuriko at one point, she seemed to mention that she hoped Crocodile would remain in the position of an ally in the story (after having teamed up with Luffy during Impel Down), and like. Yuriko I love you, you so are so right

I haven’t said anything since November and I haven’t had the means to make gifs but the parallel between clexa and mizemi is so loud
Mizu and Lexa both thinking love is weakness and not to lead with the heart
Mizu letting Akemi be taken is exactly like when Lexa betrayed Clarke at the Mountain
Clarke and Akemi both wearing the stubborn princess titles proudly (they both will become leaders of their people while their badass girlfriends slay their enemies w a blade)

denki!kuroba has plagued my mind for the past 24 hours so it's time to drop their design & lore. ( bonus + more lore under the cut! )
Tumblr media Tumblr media
( ya'll knew i had to find a way to shoehorn kurokara into this au SOMEHOW. )
while they don't meet during the events of six idol statues of taboo, kuroha does eventually get to meet chorosuke's recently reunited brothers afterwards. strangely enough, it seems that karatsugu knows who they are. kuroha's life before the accident was much like the one kuroba lives ; having attended college for horticulture and working at their grandfather's floral shop. karatsugu and kuroha had known each other for a long time, having become friends in high school and staying quite close into adulthood. because of this, he was absolutely devastated when they suddenly disappeared a year and a half ago while on the way to visit family in yokohama. there were no reports of any crashes or deaths, no missing people found, nothing. it was as if they were spirited away, never to be heard of again. upon learning this, kuroha is rather distraught. even though his face is so familiar to them, the past he recounts to them refuses to come back to them. something they had been keeping a secret from the others at the midorito estate was that they had begun to recollect some things, but what they remembered seemed more like strange dreams than any memories they should have. memories of traveling with mononoke, fighting in gang wars, fending off youkai, a life much like what karatsugu described but not exactly the same... and in all of those memories, the six same faces, so eerily similar yet unsettling different. the most prominent of them all being the faces just like karatsugu's. they aren't sure why these strange memories are all they can recall, perhaps they're finally losing it, but with the brothers' help, kuroha might be able to figure out the true meaning behind them and even remember their life in this universe along the way.
ALSO, a quick explanation of denki!kuroba's name!
( fair warning : my understanding of japanese is very rudimentary so i may have made some mistakes in my translation or how names are written. please let me know if that's the case and i'll correct anything i've gotten wrong! )
kuroba / クロバ -> kuroha / 黒葉 ( くろは )
kuroba's name is written in katakana while kuroha's is written in kanji ( with furigana written in hiragana. )
kuroba's first name comes from クローバー ( kurōbā ) meaning clover. when the dakuten from バ ( ba ) is removed, it becomes ハ ( ha. ) the equivalent of ハ in hiragana is は, which is used in the furigana for kuroha's name. the kanji used for kuroha is 黒 ( kuro ) meaning black and 葉 ( ha ) meaning leaf.
yotsubana / 四つ花 ( ヨツバナ ) -> shinigusa / 死に草 ( しにグサ )
yotsubana comes from 四つ葉 ( yotsuba ) meaning four-leaved, notably used in the japanese for four-leaved clover / 四つ葉のクローバー ( yotsuba no kurōbā. ) the kanji for ba in youtsuba is swapped for 花 ( hana, ) which can be read has bana like in the surname tachibana. as a result, their surname can be read as " four flowers. "
the 四 ( yo ) from yotsubana, which can also be read as shi, becomes 死 ( shi, ) meaning death. the adverbializer に ( ni ) replaces つ ( tsu. ) the kanji for hana is replaced with 花 ( kusa, ) which is lifted from a synonym for clover, 詰草 ( tsumekusa. ) kusa becomes gusa as an instance of rendaku. their surname can be roughly read as " dead(ly) grass. "
