Good afternoon, delightful Tumblr people. It’s a gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous weekend in upstate New York in the Catskills. I’ve had Morse on the brain all weekend. Between writing that little vignette, and trying to explain to my mother why the show is so amazing, and our season seven project, I’ve been talking a lot and thinking a lot about his various life stages and iterations. It made me think of the very very very beginning. This scene never fails to move me. There’s so much emotion in it, and yet he isn’t even shot from the front. We barely see an entire profile. And of course, his eye roll…it says so much. it’s hard to believe this was supposed to be a one off, and he’d never played the character before. It’s just remarkable. The music is everything here too.

Okay, but Oliver actually being a stupidly rich kid too, and him being rich and bored... well, he started doing social experiments. It started off with simple stuff with the staff, like dropping money and seeing if they’d keep it or give it back to him or his mother. As he got older, the experiments became more complicated. In a sense, he accidentally created a little cult before he just ghosted them because he got scared. (He saw Scientology and was like ‘oh yeah I could do that’) He had journal after journal, all being very detailed research on each experiment he’s done. Then he entered Oxford, and instead of Oliver falling in love at first sight, he kinda just wanted to see if Felix, the golden boy of Oxford, could be befriended by a 'poor awkward scholarship kid with no style' (lmao). Anyways, he started from the very beginning, meeting Michael (whom he would have liked to befriend because the guy was weird and would be nice to socially study), and then the whole lying about his ‘family’ to be taken to Saltburn, and then after conducting that experiment because it like worked, he decided to do a second part and see how much lying it would take for a friend to forgive. He hired another family and planned to be called when he was bathing. Oh and if y’all want you could say he fell In love with Felix at the end of it so he confessed in the maze and like after some angst they had their happy ending hahaha. Anyways, he takes his social experiments very seriously. (I would say the most he would do is the Farleigh thing about the plate, but he would still feel bad lol. I wouldn’t say he would be able to kill someone. As he did social experiments, he learned more about people, the good and the bad, so I feel like he would have very good etiquette.)

Further to my analysis earlier in the week of evans and the way he holds glasses/other receptacles I thought I would add these additional items..

1. The ‘we don’t trust that fidgety Evans with liquids and have put cling film over his mug…’ *

*(Yes I know it’s probably some sort of submarine thing to make it realistic but it made me laugh far too much..)

Morse's college! It's Merton College irl. you could hear a choir singing inside and it felt like i was in an episode of endeavour lmao

The bank where Joan worked and where the bank raid happened! I just stumbled across this by accident when we were walking round. I walked past it and was like "wait..that looks really familiar.."

Another location i randomly walked past and was like "hey i've seen that before.." although now i'm doubting myself bc it looks like a different colour but i'm sure it's the same (this is from the episode Colours)

This is Lincoln college which i've no idea if it was ever used but it's the closest i got to a quad and it looks like something from an episode which made me happy lol (i did also find Exeter College where morse died in IM and i think they also filmed Endeavour there too - Shaun was also there last month doing a reading! but i couldn't get any decent photos of it)

I think (feel (hope)) we will see twow soon….

idk i do personally believe we'll see the book, i'm not as pessimistic as some people, but i also wasn't as optimistic as others were earlier this summer - i think it's going to be really apparent when GRRM is getting there, it won't just be the odd rumour.

the covers are a little encouraging tho? i work in a sort of adjacent industry to publishing so i can't say for sure that this is the case here but based on the logic of my industry at least i would be quite surprised to see new editions released if his publishers weren't expecting a renewed sales push some time soon. these things are generally timed very carefully afaik, new product releases and ad spend go way up when you think you've got your audience in hand.

you could say that the renewed push is associated with the release of the HBO spin-offs, but then why not release new covers for F&B and D&E, which supposedly would be the first books those audiences would pick up? that's why Rise of the Dragon came out to capitalise on HOTD, bc they knew new HOTD fans would go in for that sooner than AGOT. so these new editions do just seem stand out to me a little bc they've been putting off redesigning those covers for a LONG fucking time to the point I thought they never would. that said, based on GRRM's latest comments i don't think it's coming out in October lol, just that some groundwork is being laid.
