i hope enough time's passed for me to say this now but one thing that really weirded me out about all the "season 2 was so much darker than i expected! ed tortured the crew! the kraken's actions were unforgivable!" discourse was that what we saw of ed's disciplinary style in the kraken era was not only less harsh on the crew than i expected, it was actually less harsh than what i, a card-carrying ed teach stan, would have predicted of how normal pre-kraken blackbeard captained his crew before i actually watched s2.

like, if during summer 2022 you'd asked me "pre-canon, if blackbeard learned that the crew of his ship were refusing to follow orders, what would he do about it?" i would have said something like "well, probably first he tells izzy to Handle It in an ominous tone of voice, and then if izzy fails to handle it he picks a ringleader and makes a public example of them in a very memorable way. probably he makes them eat a toe in front of everybody or something." never in one million years would it have occurred to me to say "he tries to bribe them with free cake in the break room"
