babyduppy replied to your post:the only good things to come out of this ugly...
why does everything have to be nazisâŚwe couldnt we have this Pure Moment to ourselvesâŚweâve been waiting for this wedding for so long
i know right?!! i was so mad when they announced the wedding was in the crossover and even angrier when it involved nazis. itâs a new marketing scheme and itâs sick. crossovers can be fun imo but i fast forwarded through most of this one. they could have easily just done evil alt versions of the characters without nazi imagery and worked out all the same. instead they gave nazis feelings (overgirl and dark arrow) and tortured jewish, poc, and lgbt characters for absolutely no reason but for drama /:
#babyduppy#nazism cw#the wedding should have just been in a regular flash ep#so i could have skipped over this nonsense haha#it was v ugly

@babyduppy damn, I had hoped the effects would be good at least & that there might be a couple of good jump scares⌠I think I might just not be the target demo? like not age/gender/etc. wise, but in terms of my brain lol.
#babyduppy#replies#not that i'm ~smarter than anyone just that like#Literally Nothing about the concept is scary to me#it sounds like wack ass ''jeepers creepers'' with an assortment of boring ass tokenized stereotypical children in a boring part of maine#bc real talk shit wld play out different as hell in boston or even in like a not-bougie suburb#(bc king strikes me as only having lived a middle class vaguely academic existence tbh. like he's painfully waspy.)#tbh it's funny skarsgĂĽrd jumped from ''hemlock grove'' to ''it'' bc i think brian mcgreevy's a better writer than stephen king but hey.

@babyduppy I... definitely totally fucking read that wrong & I thought you were talking about âitâ (2017) ahhh
(wrt that, I donât think Iâm the demo bc stephen king is like super... duper... mega ultra middle class kinda academic waspy? like the same sort of horror sub-genre of child-snatchers with a creepy but superficially benign image sort of ~thesis is present in stuff like âcoralineâ & âhocus pocusâ & even the pied piper of hameln, but the execution is very, very different, yk? like the way that narrative is structured is sort of steeped in its cultural backdrop where poverty or the kidsâ otherness/outcast status is its own ~horror, and not that that shit isnât horrific, but in the lives of the real people who live that shit, itâs not the spectacle. heâs not universal by a long shot.)
but yeah, âthe mistâ (2017) was horrible, only made worse by the fact that the 2007 movie of âthe mistâ managed to be decent once you got past some of those middle-class waspy stephen king-isms*. Iâm... never actually kingâs target demo as a non white person from a poor neighborhood in a city (not a town) in 1990s massachusetts, lol, like Iâd've had to really make a zip code change & dedicate myself to magical minority⢠status for any of that to happen... but in all honesty I think the show was tnt attempting to grab âthe walking deadââs audience in the off-season with overwrought character drama between pretty horrible people in a ridiculous scenario fighting an inhuman horde of monsters representing some kind of Invasive âOther.â
and whatâs fucked up is they managed to be worse at it and showcase worse characters + people than a negan-era âtwd,â though lbr, its racial track record is about on par. I doubt itâs getting a second season since itâs already migrated to netflix, and good riddance.
* re: king-isms, itâs wild as hell to me on so many levels that white middle class horror so often deals with 1. invasion of some kind + 2. unexpected but realistically moderate-level crises, bc like. I have no electricity at my house & itâs not the first time? my dad & I drove two days nonstop to pick up a dog from houston right after hurricane harvey and made it back home with like a day to spare before a norâeaster pre-gamed irma? like âinvasionâ narratives are almost always Wack As Fuck when white dudes write them in general, but Iâve also been at publix vs. at save-a-lot during power outages & hurricane supply runs, Iâve been snowed in during blizzards, Iâve been sick during external crises & Iâve had othersâ health be an external crisis, Iâve been in cities vs. small towns vs. military cities vs. on-base during different environmental situations, and they all have very very different vibes, and literally none of them are ever what king writes.
itâs what imo a lot of middle class suburbia likes to imagine the dynamic would be like, but frankly itâs bc the people who donât fit those narratives are invisible to them, and/or bc theyâre lying to themselves & each other about the sort of ~sanctity~ of a concept of ~community~ & neighborly sentiment in situations of duress. like the idea that âthe ties that bind us as individuals while separating us from others" could take priority over Coming Together In Dire Straits-- or that everyone isnât invited to âcome togetherâ in that sense-- or that, yk, the cult-ish extremist or religious fundamentalist who everyone tolerates bc they arenât hurting anyone might suddenly, SHOCKER, turn out to be dangerous-- seems to shock the target audience for a lot of kingâs work. that the world is shaken up & the establishment or adults or whatever are against you, or donât believe you, or canât help you, is presented as a brand-spanking-new horror concept, when in reality, thatâs a lot of marginalized folksâ actualy realities from like preschool on up, if theyâre lucky. it just feels incredibly trite & maudlin & self-indulgent to chew the scenery with grown-ass people being shocked their peers donât like them & wouldnât die for them, especially when Iâd rather just look at the monsters anyway.
my point being that the 2007 âthe mistâ wasnât perfect, and it feels really âoffâ bc of this like intended audience needing the same cultural baggage as king to be scared when itâs on his terms, but the movie did enough cool monster shit that I can forgive a lot of its sins for its victories, where the 2017 tv series dropped all the wins and fucking exponentially multiplied the bullshit + horrible implications behind said bullshit on top of sticking to some very king-type vibes with its narrative & character choices.
#babyduppy#replies#i couldn't fall asleep but i also just read that wrong whlie tired with my glasses off bc i'm... not alert rn lol
