I've been wondering about this for forever and have tried to come up with an answer, and might have missed it being answered somewhere else, but why are alphas the smallest of the choices? I can understand large omegas because like, protecting babies or whatever. But an alpha? Like alphas protect everyone in the pack and are described as putting themselves on the front line basically. Gammas would make more sense to me for being small because it's, easier to sneak around and be all speedy when you're small?

Idk this is just a small thing that bugs me to no end.

I think I have linked a post in the intro post with the reason why alphas are smaller, but way more resilient and strong, than other wolves from a biological/worldbuilding perspective.

But honestly, it was mainly my need to get away from the usual stereotypes in the werewolves genere and subvert some of the expectations in regards to size and behaviour. I was tired of big, domineering alphas who could physically coerce other pack members into compliance, and so I wrote a story where that isn't the case at all.

I just think everyone should be aware that the definition of Species as being "group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring" as is often given in biology classes is super oversimplified and also kinda hand-wavy.

Like the example given a lot of times is the fact that horses and donkeys can make mules, but mules are infertile, therefore horses and donkeys are different species. But like one), this entirely ignores the fuckery plants can do while still being considered different species scientifically, and 2) this also ignored that a lot of animals considered to be different species can and do produce fertile offspring. In fact, it may be *more* common for hybrids to be fertile than not.

It's hard to concretely and succinctly Define what gets considered to be separate species, because while genetic compatibility obv plays an important role (for example, lions and house cats are def separate) other things are also considered such as habitat, behavior, appearance, and frequency of hybrids in the wild if present (even if said hybrids are fertile).

For example: wolves, coyotes, and domestic dogs can all interbreed and create fertile offspring. But the three groups *in general* have different habitats, behaviors, and appearances, occupy different ecological niches, and non-manmade hybrids are far less frequent than offspring with both parents being from a single group. So while the edges can and do bleed together (esp historically for coyotes in the eastern US), it's more accurate and convenient to treat them as different groups that gave overlap than as a single overaching group with very different subsets.

Anyway this started as an intro for me to give an example of a cool hybrid and kinda turned into its own mini essay explanation but anyway there's a recorded instance of a female Common Black Hawk and a male Red-shouldered Hawk successfully mating and raising young in California in 2014 and the baby looked like a cool little goth guy

Also there's been sightings of other birds thought to be Common Black Hawk/Red-shouldered Hawk hybrids (at least 400 cedible sightings on ebird, though its unclear how many are the same individual(s) seen by different people), though it hasn't been 100% confirmed due to not having genetic samples and only seeing the adult birds and not its parents. The ones in these pics are adults, while the offspring in the above pic is a juvenile, which is why they look so different

Godless Wolves: The Wolves of Blood Meridian and Their Relationship with the Violence of Man

In Blood Meridian, a camaraderie of sorts is established between the Glanton gang and the vicious, scavenging wolves, or lobos, of the plains. This may be as a result of a sense of mutually assured destruction between the two groups. However, McCarthy’s reverence towards wolves, arguably, runs much deeper than this. The kid explains that even though the gang had eaten little of any sustenance for many days, “[he] would never shoot a wolf and [he] know[s] other men of the same sentiments” (McCarthy, 2001: p.129). This suggests a kind of unwritten reverence towards the beasts. The wolves seem to uphold this relationship through their restraint from attacking and feeding on the gang themselves, but rather following them on their treks, “wink[ing] out there on the edge of the firelight” when the gang make camp, “and in the morning when the riders rose out in the cool dark they could hear the snarling and the pop of their mouths behind them as they sacked the camp for meatscraps” (McCarthy, 2001: p.41). As Gary Marvin puts forward in his book Wolf, in this location and time period, wolves were shot by everyone who could shoot. There even existed a profession known as ‘Wolfer’. In this, a ranger would hunt down wolves for their pelts and eliminate them due to their threat to crops, livestock, and humans alike. These Wolfers were treated as law enforcement (Marvin, 2012: p:98). This reverence, this mutualistic relationship, shown in Blood Meridian is not one shared throughout history. This forces a reader to question why such a peaceful relationship should exist in an otherwise brutally violent novel. The answer to this question, as I argue, is multifaceted.

It borders on impossible, in a presentation of wolves in media, to avoid conjuring up biblical connotations. In Ezekiel, menacing princes are likened to “wolves tearing their pray, shedding blood, destroying lives” (ESVB, 2001: Ezekiel. 22:27). Wolves are portrayed as being the manifestation of evil, savagery, and the corrupters of innocence; their ravaging of innocent sheep is referenced frequently throughout as a metaphor for this (ESVB, 2001: Acts 20:29). An image of a pack of wolves savaging the pure white lamb is one with which almost every person in Christian dominated nations is familiar. In this, the gang are much more like wolves than men. Both travel in packs, wandering, hunting others down for personal gain, culling their own weakest links, and butchering those in their paths. Their camaraderie must therefore be rooted in a sense of kinship. However, to push this idea further, the biblicality of the wolves and the gang, through their lack of godliness yet continued praying, deepens their bond. They are both God’s forgotten. Rejected. The Fall of Man, interpreted from the first three chapters of the book of Genesis, shows man falling intro depravity through their disobedience and sin. This creates a world tainted with sin which nobody may be free of, not even new-born babies (ESBV, 2001: Genesis). The gang, and the wolves, do anything but repent this original sin, and thus, God abandons them. Even when Hayward prays for rain and his prayer is seemingly answered, the rain is short-lived and lands like bullets (McCarthy, 2001: p.46). The Christian God may exist somewhere in the world, but there is “no God in Mexico” (McCarthy, 2001: p.33) or its borderlands. There is only violence and, as the Judge theorises, where God has abandoned his subjects, War will remain to rule over them in His stead. In this, the wolves of Blood Meridian and the Glanton gang are fundamentally linked through their existence as subjects of War, the God of the borderlands, and they behave accordingly.

This is a new intro post to my Pack in Wolvden! Sorry it has taken so long to post this... i literally just forgot to make this.

For those who want to know who I am on Wolvden: My Pack's name is "The Cryptids Eye Pack" and my player name is ClownCryptids ! my user number is #119087

Some basic info on how I've been playing so far:

I've decided to go with a "Pagan" (mostly Gaelic) name theme for my wolves, bec I feel like those kind of names fit wolves really well! (I've just been using a Pagan baby name site to name them heh)

I really like cool eyes and I want to collect lots of them! Hence the "Eye" in my pack name!

I am going to try to go for a mostly "clean" (not inbred) pack, though I may still have some dirty wolves if i like em enough (cough Rune cough)

Now onto the Wolves!

This is my pack leader Eun! He's pretty boring bec he was my first wolf.. but im emotionally attached to him now. I would love to give him a new base tho!

This is my current Stud and Herbalist Orrin! He is sooo pretty lookin <3 I haven't really used him much for stud tho.. I like getting studs from outside of the pack! Plus Orrin isn't actually that special genetically :P

This is Darragh my Mentor! I bought her bec she was cheep and a high level with maxed out Finisher proficiency but ive decided she has a curse that makes it so she always looses prey... bec of this she has been made a Mentor LOL (She does have great luck in babies tho bec she gave me a pie pup, love her for that <3)

Next up we have Geir and Lachlan! I bought them at the same time as Darragh bec they too had high levels and maxed out hunting proficiencies! They aren't very fancy but they do their job well and I appreciate them for that.

My Teardrop base boy Erwynn! He's a Scout because he has an asshole personality so he would piss off the rest of the hunting party. He is so pretty tho I love the teardrop base sm <3

Imogen! Im pretty sure she's my highest stat girl! She too was bought alongside Darragh for the same reasons as the other hunters! She actually has a maxed out chaser prof i think, but I switched her to a finisher to replace Darragh and she is so good at it (probably bec of her high stats)! Also I think she is very pretty :3

Eirene, my second wolf I got in the game! She's the pack member I got to customize! Im probably gonna keep her around just for sentimentality <3 She is currently one of the hunting party's chasers!

Wraith! One of the first wolves I bought! I got her for the eyes <3 She just recently grew up! She's the first wolf Ive had from puppy to adult hood hehe. She is currently expecting puppies! exiting!

Daemon! I bought her shortly after I bought Wraith! She also just grew up and is pregnant as well! I may sell her if I get some better eclipse eyed pups from her... but Im keeping her for now!

Eskel, my beautiful Pupsitter! I bought him for the looks but I found out he's got maxed out Pupsitting so that was a big bonus!!! gosh he's so pretty... one of my faves for sure.

Worth far more than your weight in gold. Monster Hunter Techno goes after Philza, who is a raven-dragon-kenku, for taking Tommy. Phil can only talk through redacting others sentences. Monster/culture worldbuilding. Hurt/comfort, distrustful bonding. Themes of learning to value yourself, discrimination, communication.

116 East Normal Street. Human Techno bonding with his neighborhood, who are all not-so-secretly from very different genres such as 'magical girl' or 'noir detective' or 'invading alien'. Most light-hearted thing I've ever written tbh. Themes about suburban isolation but it's buried in there.

Ficlets:

The Lambs Wolves Wear (for the ficlet, or here on ao3 + intro chapters before the reveal) AU where all of Philza's real children were replaced by different monsters he has to appease to survive. Problem? "Technoblade" "Tommy" and "Wilbur" never experienced love before and now adore Philza, unaware it's not real.

Unnamed Hybrids AU where Tommy is an avian and during exile his abuser takes advantage of his instincts to manipulate him. Angst heavy, deals with suffering and recovering from abuse. Complete.

Premise of SBI SCP AU

This is an au that has consumed me. This blog will just be a terrible mess of whatever I’m stuck on for the week, likely with little explanation and heavy spoilers. Anyway, the general vibe + anomalous properties are below cut:

Philza: The Zilant. Is the immortal concept of fire and fury, which pretends to be a dragon, which pretends to be a human. Maintains his personhood by attaching himself to mortals he calls his ‘Collected’. Currently: Tommy, Wilbur, The Blade, and Tubbo. Additionally, Philza is very intent on keeping any promise he makes and was kept in the Foundation exclusively because they’d captured his Collected and made a deal. Gives great dad advice, except when the advice is ‘let me murder them for you <3’

Tommy: The Instigator. Has a blood red liquid on his hands that grows when he’s scared. When people touch it, they become aggressive to anyone but Tommy. At low TI-Red levels this leads to things like bickering, but it escalates to physical violence and brutality. When TI-Red levels consume him and he thinks he’s going to die, he summons The Blade. Lived as a normal human and met Wil, Phil, and The Blade after a summoning at 15; visited the homeless guys occasionally till the Foundation captured at 16. Abandonment issues, highly touch starved, used as a Thaumiel. Collected Tubbo.

The Blade: The Blood God. Is a massive boar behemoth with voices in his head. When attacked (or if there’s an orphan), becomes The Blood God, who will bend the universe to ensure he wins. The Blade only comes back when the challenge has been completed. Grew up as a monster in the woods, but pulled himself up out of the voices, figured out what was him and what was The Blood God, and established his own personhood. Somehow has a college degree, met Phil and Wil during a gap year. Loves gardening and murdering people for Tommy. Also managed to come out of the Foundation the least traumatized, iconic. 

Wilbur: Soot. [tags are noms Wilbur or scp Wilbur if you want to block] His legs magically rearrange so he is the tallest humanoid in the room. Oh also the void in the side of his face that eldritch abominations claw their way out of. Was basically a feral starving child till ~14 when Philza forcefully adopted him. A chronic insomniac with a heart of gold and a tongue of silver, held together despite the inherent contradictions between being a supreme survivalist and a drama hoe. Memory issues because he represses basically everything. 

Tubbo: The Pollinator. Is a honeycomb skin suit for approximately 400,000 bees. Uses they/them we/us pronouns, because they are a Hive mind/system containing at least three humans: a Little, a Foundation employee, and a lawyer/farmer. Tubbo grew up mostly normal, albeit in secret. The most recently captured by the Foundation, and a staunch pacifist. This causes them to be at odds with Philza, who did a few murderous rampages too many, and The Blade, for the reason above and also because he destroyed their legs. But they stick around because they’re attached to Tommy. 

Basic vibes are found family, hurt/comfort, questions of morality, and trauma at the hands of the Foundation and each other. Things get messy, but it’s all bound together with love at the end of the day.

Thoughts During TOH 3x01 Thank to Them

Alright, here we go. Let’s do this. Final season of the Owl House.

Man, the first six minutes are so bittersweet. All the adventures we would have had. But honestly, Dana and crew made the most of that intro holy cow.

It’s really cute that they were all trying to learn Spanish. Amity referencing the top student star. Ha.

Finding that little box was a little quick but I’m not gonna hold that against them.

Luz, baby, you really are too hard on yourself.

Luz being like “mom” and Camila not understanding that Luz is trying to warn her about something in the road actually reminds me of something that happened with me and my mom. We were trying to decide what to cook for dinner for a party. I saw a deer in the road and didn’t want to freak Mom out so I very calmly was like “Deer.” Mom didn’t get it and replied “I don’t think that would be a good idea for this.” And so more emphatically I said “No, Mom, deer,” and she finally saw it and hit the brakes.

….Anyway, back to the show.

Hunter has gotten really good at sewing. And wolves are cool.

Camila is such a good mom, y’all. I’m crying. She loves Luz so much. Every scene with them hits so hard, why are they so good?! Frick me.

ok just posting some random things about the concert last night

- I was on Ray’s side so I saw him come out first and I literally screamed. so sorry to everyone around me

- Gerard in the cheerleading outfit!! they really seemed so happy and comfortable in it just jumping and twirling around, it definitely felt more like personal expression than a performative gesture

- towards the end of the show G said “the only thing I’m sad about is that I probably won’t be able to wear this again” to which everyone awwed, but like. no. you are WELCOME to wear it again my best friend

- also loved everyone else wearing Mikey shirts since he lives in nashville!! side note: Frank’s cardigan…….

- I was worried they wouldn’t play our lady of sorrows since they played it at the last two shows and it’s one of my all time favs but THEY DID I’m actually so happy

- during give ‘em hell kid right before “you’re beautiful” G pointed at us and was like “no YOU are. it’s YOU” <3

- they were all just so smiley! like smiling at each other and at the crowd and I know everyone’s been saying that they’re just so happy to be back but like- it was just awesome to see

- I loved Mikey’s posing like you go king!! lol

- boy division, sorrows, give em hell, and HOUSE OF WOLVES back to back HOW did any of us survive

- Gerard has officially proclaimed im not okay the “greatest summer jam” so everyone else can go home now sorry

- hearing “trust me” live… my life is actually over now thanks

- being able to see Mr Ray Toro working his magic up close was life changing. I’ve never seen anyone look as happy as him playing guitar

- sadly Frank shelved the moaning during DESTROYA probably since Mikey’s fam was there but boy G sure didn’t !

- also I wasn’t super close since I got into the pit late but it was enough that I could fully see all of their faces. the thought that any of them could have seen my face is kinda messing me up ngl

- there was never a moment where I was like “oh fuck they’re looking at me” except for one time when Gerard stared in my direction for a long time and it was… very intense. I was recording at that moment (you can’t see their face very well) but I was like- do I have the flash on or something is that why he’s staring this way?? you can see me nervously turning the camera to check in the video lol

- Ray’s vocals during na na na are literally everything to me <3

- being at the first show that they played the finished version of the world is ugly is something that is actually soooo special to me

- also this is the best day ever- bullets songs just hit different man idk what to tell you

- I’ll be honest I don’t listen to wttbp a lot just because it’s such a thing, but hearing it in person surrounded by everyone singing along is just so epic. it could never be overhyped

- mama with G in the dress is obviously incredible and I’ve seen a ton of videos of them during the “should’ve raised a baby girl” part but I remember looking at Ray right before that part as well and he just looked so happy and excited knowing how loud everyone was about to sing along. they all did really. they absolutely know how much that part means to their fans

- when the intro to sleep was playing Ray smiled and raised up his wine glass lmaooo

- love that they played Helena early so they didn’t forget this time lol

- GERARD SINGING THE CIRCUS SONG WHEN THEY CAME BACK ONSTAGE FOR THE ENCORE. bestie are you calling US clowns?? ok

- Gerard’s little ramble before kids of yesterday, saying he recognized people’s faces… <3

- Ray’s solo during kids was gorgeous to behold- perfect way to end

- I’d only ever been in the pit at two other concerts and this one was by far the least crazy crowd. even though everyone was obviously excited and super energetic everyone was very respectful and considerate (also the band and crew were great with safety and giving everyone water)

Anyways this was the best night of my life and though I hope to see them again, if I don’t I’ll still be happy to have been here
