Starlight Chapter 13

Summary: Amani is an orphaned heiress who's spent most of her life raising her younger sister. T'Challa is a widowed King and Father. Neither of them is expecting much from their night at the Lotus. But the coming months have many milestones in store for these young adults. Will becoming a family be one of them?

“Amani, I’m about to head out,” Amare called, grabbing her house keys off of the hook. “Okay, hold on, I'll be right back Baby.” T’Challa nodded into the phone and muted himself to speak to someone off screen. Amani hurried down the stairs and smiled at her little sister. “Okay, passport, keys, tickets, wallet, and medicine in carryon?”

“Yes mother,” Amare smirked.

“I’m just trying to keep you safe kid,” the older Okeke smiled and pulled her in for a hug. “You’re 18, not 21, so please, no sneaking off without telling Shuri’s guards where you all are going. Limit your alcohol intake, I know it’s legal over there but the last thing I need is a call from a German hospital saying you have alcohol poisoning.”

“I promise I will limit the drinking, and the sneaking out.”

“Good. Have fun, be safe. I love you.” Amani smiled and pulled her sister in for another hug. “Love you too sis. I’ll only be gone for a week.”

“I know, but you know I hate saying goodbye. You’re all I have left kid. But I want to let you live, so go before you miss your flight. Hug Shuri for me.

“I’ll call you when I land.” Amare bounded down the front steps and into her already packed car. Amani sighed watching her wave one last time before pulling off down the street. She waved at the patrol car as it drove by on its hourly surveillance drive by, before locking her door and heading up the stairs into her office. “And I’m back,” she plopped into her seat, reopening her MacBook.

“Personally I don’t think it’s fair that our sisters see each other more than we do,” the king teased. Amani rolled her eyes, “This is their first time seeing each other since we came home, it’s only been two months,” Amani laughed. “Yes, and after having you here for three months, I’ve decided that 61 days is too long to be out of your presence.”

“Well you know I’m working to get the venue started up, I just can’t travel as much as usual. You know I would be there if I could,” Her voice began to tremble.

“I know my love,” T’Challa reassured, “I am just teasing,” he frowned, noticing her eyes tearing up. “I know but lately I’ve just been feeling like such a bad girlfriend,” she began to sob and the king panicked. “Hey no, you’re perfect. Nothing's wrong. It’s on both of us and I was gonna tell you that I was planning to surprise you with a visit.”

“Really?” Amani sniffled.

“Yes so please stop crying entle.” The heiress grabbed a tissue from the box she had begun to keep on her desk after noticing that even the little things made her tear up. “I’m sorry. I ruined the surprise again,” she chuckled, wiping the tears from her cheeks. “It is fine, now you have something to look forward to. You hate them anyway,” the king teased.

“Are you sure you’re alright though my love? You have been extra-sensitive lately.”

“In more ways than one,” the heiress murmured. “Have you been to the new doctor, did she run the tests the doctor here ordered?” The king grabbed a stack of papers and began signing them. “Yep,” Amani read over and responded to an email her contractor sent before turning her attention back to T’Challa. “I have an appointment with her tomorrow. She and Dr. Zabulie both sounded very excited so I’m hoping it's a positive result.”

The king smiled at the news, “Well then I’ll be expecting a full report as soon as you know.”

“Of course. I’ll call your mother as well, I wouldn’t even be in this position if you all hadn’t encouraged me to go see another doctor.”

“We both just want what is best for you,” the king smiled, “but unfortunately I have a meeting to attend to my love. I will call you later tonight, okay?”

“Of course, I’ll see you later.” She blew a kiss through the phone before the king had to hang up. After responding to more emails, she scheduled some property manager interviews for later in the week and a building walk through. Her phone caught her attention as it began to ring, “Hello?” She answered. “Hey, Kura and I finished those designs for different set ups and interiors, are you free to go over them?”

“Yeah,” Amani smiled. While in Wakanda she and her friends decided to go into the event business together. They’d bought an old hotel downtown in Atlanta and decided to turn it into a sleepover venue. With suites and rooms designed for different party sizes and moveable features to make the room age appropriate. A spa, boutique, and restaurant, would be located on the grounds as well. There was also a separate grand ballroom and garden that allowed them to market the place as an all in one wedding venue. They’d started work while in Wakanda and now two months later they were weeks away from opening the ballroom, gardens, and other non overnight amenities for event bookings. They would use the money from the rentals to help recover the costs of renovating the hotel rooms.

“Bet. We’ll be over in 30. Sakura has to pick up the pizza first.”

“Cool, don’t forget extra garlic butter sauce. Imma hop in the shower. Y’all can just use your keys to let yourselves in.”

After hanging up the phone Amani hopped in the shower and let the water soothe her muscles. She’d been working so hard to make sure everything came together and it finally was. She was more in love with T’Challa each day, she was starting a business with her friends, and Darius had been spotted in New York living with some family he had there. She still had nightly surveillance, but knowing that he’d move out of the state definitely calmed her nerves.

“Madiyson?” The heiress called as the sound of the front door caught her attention. When she didn’t receive a response she shrugged and figured she had her beats on. She quickly motioned with her coconut oil,slipped into some sweatpants, and pulled a sports bra over her head before a voice sent a chill down her spine. “You’ve been holding out on me Amani.”

Darius got up from his seat behind her on the bed and revealed the kitchen knife he was holding. “If I had known you could look like that, I would’ve made you work out more.”

“How the hell did you get in my house?”

“No Thank you? Darius frowned.

“What do I have to thank you for?”

“Giving you a second chance,” Darius smirked before lunging at the Okeke heiress. Amani, dodged his lunge as he ran into the dresser she was standing in front of. “ A second chance for what you bastard!” The heiress resisted the urge to search for her phone, she knew Darius, he watched her eyes always to anticipate her next move. “You ruined my life. You were supposed to be my wife, look pretty, give me kids. Instead your ass got me locked up for damn near life. Now my dad is all on my ass because he had to call in a favor with the DA and the governor in one sitting-”

“Well maybe your ass should’ve just stayed in jail then!” Amani ducked, expecting the lamp on the nightstand to fly towards her head. She took the moment she dodged the light fixture to locate her phone. It was too far and she knew that she’d never be able to reach it before Darius finished his spiel. She’d have to leave her friends a clue that something had gone wrong.

“Now,” Darius eyed Amani as she backed up against the wall, “as I was saying. Everyone is counting on me to not fuck up! Which means I need to get my old life back, starting with you Ms. Okeke, now heiress of the Okeke Industries Tech Conglomerate.”

“No one will ever believe that we are a happy couple once again Darius, they found me, clinging to life, hypothermic, and bleeding because you literally beat our child out of me. It was on the five o'clock news for weeks straight.” Amani risked eyeing her keys once more, hoping that the plan she was hatching would work.

“What better way to show them that I am a changed man, than by having you forgive me. A redeemed love, a true love,” Darius stepped up to Amani and caressed her cheeks and lips. The woman felt like crawling out of her skin but she held it together. “Why don’t you just find another woman?” Not that Amani wished Darius on any other woman, she’d prefer he’d be locked up in a cell, but she needed to get him to back up. “Does it really matter? I want you, and I’ve already invested a lot in you Amani. You got a little break to have fun and spend time with other men, but you are mine. You always were and you always will be, it’s time I got a return on my investment. “ Darius took a seat on Amani’s bed and she silently rejoiced.

“Okay, then what’s your plan?”

“You don’t need to know all of that. Just know that I’m not leaving you behind Amani.” Darius pointed the knife and Amani nodded, “I’m just gonna grab my keys,” she gestured. “If I go missing, the police will look at all of your father’s and friend’s properties, no one will think I was stupid enought to take you to one of our vacation homes.” At least the waitress hoped this wasn’t the stupidest idea she’d ever had.

“Nah, cause I’m sure your friends and man know all about those places. Not to mention your little sister.”

“Amare is out of the country at a science conference, won’t be home for two weeks, you’ll have time to move me before she can get back. As for the others, they don’t even know we own vacation properties.” Amani scoured through her keys and grabbed the one she knew her sister would recognize as missing first. “Here, we can go to the chateau in the mountains in North Carolina. It’s secluded. No one for miles around.”

Darius stood up, “Nah, there’s a reason you’re helping me. What is it?”

“You’re never gonna leave me alone otherwise. I don’t wanna die, and this is most likely the last time I’ll ever get a decision about something that happens to me. Think of it as my final words.” As soon as the excuse left her mouth Amani felt her mouth go dry and heavy, for some reason, it did feel like she’d sealed her own fate.

“Amani!” Madiyson called as she entered the apartment. Sakura followed in hot on her heels to place the heavy pizzas in the kitchen. “I still don’t know why you ordered four pizzas for 3 people,” Madiyson laughed, dropping all of her interior design sketches and renderings on the table. “As much of a perfectionist each of us is… We're gonna be here all night and y’all are gonna be glad I bought enough pizza.”

“Well if AMANI would BRING. HER. ASS. DOWN. THE. STAIRS we could get started and be done at a godly hour.” Madison yelled up the stairs into the continued silence. “You told her we were coming, right?”Sakura joined her friend at the base of Amani’s stairs and frowned. “Yeah, she said just let ourselves in.”

“Maybe she’s taking a nap, she’s been doing that more often than usual.”

“Oh god, if she’s taking a nap then she’ll be dead to the world right now. You wanna wake her up while I set up?” Madiyson shook her head and walked back over to the couch in the living room. “Sure, just throw me into the lion’s den. You know she hates being woken up by anyone but Amare and Ada.” Sakura whined. “You’ll be fine, she would never hate you. Just make it seem like she woke herself up. Throw a pillow or something.” Madiyson shrugged and opened her laptop.

“Always the sacrifice, never the beneficiary,” Sakura mumbled as she jogged up the stairs into Amani’s room. “Mani,” the afro-asian woman sang as she burst into the room, only to be greeted by a perfectly made bed. “Amani?'' She tried to calm her heartbeat as she checked her friend’s closet and bathroom. “Okay focus, details details,” Sakura chanted to herself. “7:47, no phone in the room, nothing messed up, somebody sat on the bed,” the waitress took note of the room as she backed her way out, down the stairs, and towards the garage. “Hey, did you- what’s wrong,” Madiyson frowned as her best friend opened the garage door and looked out. “Did she say she was gonna leave?” Sakura ignored Madiyson’s original question, feeling her stomach drop at the presence of Amani’s car, and the empty house. “No, she said she was gonna take a shower-”

“Madiyson, She’s not here.”

“Look, I already told you what happened. Madiyson called Amani at 6:30, she picked me up, we picked up the pizzas, let ourselves in, but she wasn’t here when i went to check on her. I went into the room at 7:47. The shower had been turned on and the room was steamy, and someone had sat on her bed but Amani hates that unless she’s about to go to sleep. Except she isn’t in her room sleeping!”

“Why are you all not taking this seriously! Her abusive ex is a known kidnapping threat. For God’s sake she’s had a 24/7 patrol for months because there was fear he would try to retaliate! Now that she’s missing, y’all aren’t doing a damn thing.” Madiyson butted in frustrated at the officers staring at them like they were aliens from outer space.

“Ma’am, we are just trying to get all the facts first-”

I’ve given them to you three times, if you can’t comprehend then we’ve got a bigger problem!” Sakura fumed and the officers stood. “We’ll call headquarters and see what we can do. Technically it has to be 48 hours before we can report and adult as missing-”

“Just get out please,” Madiyson sighed. She held open the door for the officers who hesitated, their feathers obviously ruffled.

“I’ll try calling Amare again.” Sakura stood and walked out after the officers left. Madiyson locked the door and stared up at the clock, realizing she should probably call T’Challa.

“Hello?” Madiyson breathed deeply as the call finally connected to the king, “T, she’s gone,” the woman’s voice warbled but her words shook the king all the same. “What do you mean she is gone?” He stood, immediately stumbling to slip on some shoes and race through the halls to his mother’s room. “Sakura and I came for a meeting, and she wasn’t here. Her car is here but she isn't and she assured us she’d be here taking a shower. Someone else was here because someone was sitting on her bed, at the bottom. You know she hates people ruffling her sheets.”

“Have you talked to Amare? Are you sure she didn’t take her to the airport?”

“We’ve been trying to reach her but she's still on the plane. She would have been back by now if she just went to the airport. She knew we were coming.” Madiyson broke, sobbing into the phone.

T’Challa’s heart dropped, his mind racing back to how he’d begged his lover not to go back until the rumors that her abuser had officially moved were confirmed. Now she was gone and the king felt he had failed to protect her. “Madiyson, Madiyson, I need you to breathe and keep breathing. Did you call the police?”

“Yes, but-“ Madiyson stumbled trying to regain her composure, “they said since it hasn’t been 48 hours it’s not technically a missing persons case.”

The king felt anger rush through his veins, “So they aren’t doing anything?”

“Not really,” Madiyson moved to grab tissue from Amani’s bathroom. “Have her call the detectives over these two imbeciles. She was on 24 hour surveillance due to risk of revenge from her abuser. Them sitting around doesn’t make any sense.”

“I know, I know, I’m heading downstairs right now-” Madison paused as she noticed Amani’s keys on her vanity. “Wait, one of her keys-” Madison trailed off flipping through the keys. “One of her keys is what?” T’Challa knocked on his mother’s door. “It’s missing. When her parents died, she kept keys to all of their properties. With them all labeled with numbers but I don’t know which one is which. Just number three is missing,” Madison ran a hand over her braids and huffed. T’Challa banged on his mother’s door again before taking a step back and pacing the hall. “Okay, You and Sakura just stay there, keep trying to reach Amare. I’m on my way and I’ll try to reach Shuri. See if you can figure out what key is missing.”

“Okay, call us when you land.”

T’Challa hung up the phone, “Umama!” He banged on the door before Ramonda yanked it open. “T’Challa, what in Bast’s name-”

“It’s Amani, she’s missing. We have to go now, can you try to reach Shuri? Her friends think they have a lead but we need to reach Amare.”

“How long has she been missing?” The queen mother rushed back in her room and started to get dressed and pack a bag. “We don’t know, I just got off the phone with Madiyson. They went to the house and she was missing.”

“Did they call the police?”

“They say they can’t report her absence until 48 hours has passed,” T’Challa opened his beads and messaged Okoye. I need you, Ayo, a plane, and five of your best warriors. Meet me on the tarmac in 30.”

“When do we leave?”

“In 30 minutes, I have to pack a bag. Ayo and Okoye will meet us at the tarmac with some back up, can you please try to reach Shuri while I get ready?”

“Yes, I will try calling her.”

The king nodded and turned to rush back to his room. “T’Challa,” Ramonda called out,”We will find her. She will be alright.” He offered his mother a sad smile before continuing down the hall.

“It’s the North Carolina key?”

“Yes. Number 3 it's her favorite number for her favorite house.” Amare insisted as Sakura flipped through the keys again.

“Do you know the address?” Madison interrupted.upiui

“Uh, number 3 Lodge Street Asheville, North Carolina.”

“And you’re sure that is the key that is missing?” T’Challa interrupted Madiyson and Amare. The teen looked at the king through the camera, the lights of the quinjet humming behind her as Shuri watched on. “Yes, I’m positive. Amani is heading to the North Carolina house.”

The king hit the table and turned to his guard, “We are heading to North Carolina. Now.”

“We’ll meet you there-”

“No,” T’Challa and his mother answered at the same time.``You two stay exactly where you are,'' Ramonda demanded. “All due respect, I am not staying over here in Germany when my sister has been kidnapped by her abuser!” Amare rebutted. “Yes, but for all we know he has men looking for you too. As well as Madiyson and Sakura. So until then, at least we know where you are. We are sending Dora Milaje to your hotel.” T’Challa finalized.

“No, I am not standing back when my sister is in danger. I wasn’t there the first time she was saved and opened her eyes, I want to be there this time.” Amare demanded while she teared up and T’Challa sighed. He walked around the desk to look at Okoye and his mother. “You all can head back to Wakanda, once the extra Dora arrive. Once we have her, we’ll bring her back to Shuri’s lab, there you guys can see her.” The king looked at everyone in the room, “Besides, I don’t think it is safe for any of you to be in the US alone right now.”

“So what are you saying?” Sakura sat up from her place on the couch. T’Challa nodded at the general of the Dora Milaje. Okoye tapped her staff and escorted the rest of the warriors out of the home. Once the door had shut the room turned to face T’Challa again. “I have been thinking, especially in light of what has happened to Amani, that you all should move to Wakanda. Stay in the palace of course. I know you two would have to travel for business and Amare we’d have to figure out your schooling, but it is obvious that this government has no vestment in keeping you all safe. I can do something about it and I will, if you all will let me.”

“I don’t know T-” Madiyson started.

“I had been thinking about transferring to study with Shuri, but I don’t know how Amani would take it.” Amare added. “She’s not just gonna give up her independence. She just got it back from Darius,” Sakura added. “I know but it is not safe here, at least for now. As well connected as that fugitive is, who knows what will happen to you all if he goes back to jail. I let Amani convince me she would be safe, and now two months later we are searching for her praying to Bast that she isn’t dead.”

“T’Challa this is not your fault,” Sakura interjected. “I know, but if I can keep you all safe, I have a responsibility to do so. You will have free will and autonomy, but at least inside Wakanda’s borders, I can guarantee your safety.

“I think this is a lovely conversation, but might I remind you all that this is a time sensitive case. Let’s table this discussion until we all make it back to Wakanda” Shuri interrupted the discussion that seemed to be heading towards an endless round table. “Shuri is right, time is of the essence.” Ramonda spoke standing, “everyone comes back to wakanda for the time being. Once we rescue Amani, we send our war dogs to clear any suspicions and make sure it is safe for you all to return. Then we make a decision. Until then-“

“We focus on the task at hand.” Madiyson finished and Ramonda agreed. “Shuri and Amare head back home once the Dora arrive. When we have Amani we’ll let you know.”

“Keep my sister safe T’Challa,” Amare asserted before hanging up. “She’s just nervous,” Sakura reassured. “We are all glad we have someone here to help us this time. But we should get on the road. Darius works fast.” The Afro-Asian waitress added solemnly. The king nodded, “Phambile,” he called and the guards opened the doors escorting everyone to the cars waiting to race to the airport.”

Fourteen Hours Ago

“Amani.” The heiress fumbled to wrap the stick back it s package and hide it on the sink before running out of her bathroom. “Hey,” she offered her younger sister a smile but only received a confused face in return. “Hey, you’re up early, I thought you’d be sleep,” Amare took a seat in one of the overstuffed arm chairs in her sisters bedroom. “I wasn’t feeling well. I got up to take some medicine no biggie,”Amani shrugged. “You go to the doctor again soon right? You should have her check it out.”

“She’s an OBGYN, but I’ll see what she might be able to recommend.”

“Cool, well I’d been thinking-“

“Oh that’s never good,” the heiress laughed as her sister shot daggers her way. “As I was saying. I’ve been thinking about transferring to study in Wakanda with Shuri. It’d make it easier for you to come see Tchalla and I could get accustomed to the culture before we move there-“

“Hey hey, who said we we’re moving to Wakanda?”

“Amani. I’m not dumb or a little girl anymore. I know how marriages and relationships work. I know you live tchalla. I know he loves you. And I know how monarchies work. I also know that T’Challa has asked you to move in or visit more often and that I’m probably the reason you’re hesitant about doing either.”

“You’re right, but I didn’t say anything cause I don’t want you thinking you have to move because of me and T’Challa. I want you to follow your dreams, and dtudying at MIT was one of those dreams.”

“And dreams change, Amare reminded. I used to any to be a ballerina, astronaut, actress, and hear I am studying at MIT. And now, I know that the university of Wakanda can offer me so much more. Plus I’ll get to spend more time with my best friend and take advantage of her lab. It’s a win win!” The young genius insisted. Amani sighed and settled on the chair next to her.

“How about we finish out this fall semester and pick up the conversation over Christmas break. I just don’t want you to regret anything.” The older sister explained.

“That’s fair.” Amare nodded and stood. “Back to you though, are you sure you’re feeling well enough for me to leave?”

“Now you sound like the older sister. I’ll be fine kid, you go have fun at your conference thing in Germany. Have you finished packing?”

“Nope, I wanted to get and early start at the stores so I can pack before my flight.”

Three Days ~ 56

Sebastian and I talked and laughed until early morning. By the time I was finished packing it almost wasn't worth going to sleep. There was no way in hell I was going to hang up before he was ready. Cathartic or not, tears are tears. And with his history of being emotionally unavailable, calling me with puffy red eyes is a big fucking deal.

Throwing my phone across the room when the alarm went off seemed like a good idea. I fought off the urge. Half an hour and a cup of coffee later I was on my way to the airport. Flying out of White Plains was a shorter drive with a longer flight. Wound up being about the same as the long drive with a shorter flight from LaGuardia. I loved flying much more than driving. Plus, TSA at White Plains is cake. Past security I got another cup of coffee and settled in until boarding. I had a lovely breakfast on my layover in North Carolina. I do love a good chicken biscuit. In Atlanta I took a picture of the “Welcome” sign and posted it with the caption, "Back where I was born." I hadn't called Atlanta home in many years. I said things like, “It's good to be back", "I missed being here.", and "I'm happy to see you guys." New York was home. Seattle was home. I rarely called Alpharetta home except as a throwaway word to avoid having to explain.

Almost immediately I got a text.

Sebastian ~ I’m not afraid of your father. I hear he's a cupcake compared to your dad. Think I can tell you and Amy apart?

We'd talked about him meeting them. I hadn't thought about how strange it’s been for him to have me all the Vedders, even texting with Ed, but not met my parents and sister. It's way more complicated with the bio family.

I had no idea who was picking me up. I exited security and immediately saw my twin and our mini-me. Amy pointed to me and Katie squealed. Amy let go of her hand and my little niece came running. I scooped her up with the reward of having my face covered in kisses. Best welcome ever. Katie wrapped her arms tight around my neck, not letting go even when we got to her mom. I was shocked by Amy's appearance. I held Katie with one arm and hugged her, "We haven't looked so identical since we were thirteen." I combed my fingers through her shoulder-length hair that was now nearly the same color as mine.

Amy put her head back and shook out her hair, "Took three visits to get the red out and tone down the brassiness."

I smiled, "If I say you look gorgeous is that vain?"

"Definitely, but also true." She hooked her arm in mine and we headed to baggage claim. "The parental units want us to drop by the hospital before heading home. They took off Monday and Tuesday. They have a full schedule for you."

I rolled my eyes, "You can fill me in as we drive. Anything we talk about I'll just have to repeat when we get to them. Right now, I want to hear from my munchkin baby girl." I tickled Katie, getting her laughing and successfully avoiding questions. I'd figure out when to tell them about Sebastian when I heard what was planned. My tentative plan was for tonight at dinner.

Katie told me all about her preschool and her toys while we waited for my suitcase and halfway to the hospital. She only stopped when her favorite song came through the speakers. After a rousing rendition of "There's a Hole in the Bottom of the Sea" I turned my attention to Amy. "What's the plan?"

"Today we're on our own until dinner. They said we'll decide on food later. A bunch of people from high school are going out on the lake tomorrow. I thought that would be fun. Mom said they'd keep Katie."

A lot of our old friends still lived in town. I hadn't seen anyone for a couple of years. "Sounds fun."

"Sunday family is coming over. Mom wants to tell you the rest. I promised."

I laughed, "Shopping and a spa day."

"I didn't tell you."

Fifteen minutes later we were swinging Katie between us across the parking lot. Mom and dad were heads of their departments. Neuro for dad and OB/GYN for mom. Our directions were always the same upon our arrival. Sign in and proceed to the fourth-floor doctor's cafe. Security would have paged them and they'd meet us there. I got coffee for us and ice cream for Katie.

Mom arrived first. She was the blond hair, blue-eyed version of me. Dad had dark hair and blue eyes. Amy and I were a great combination of them. Mom had us young and was not quite fifty. They always said we were planned, but who the hell plans kids right after graduating from college. Mom deferred her first year of med school. We had a wonderful nanny.

After a long hug, mom held my hands and stood back to look at me. "You look beautiful as always. Maybe a little tired."

Such a mom thing to say. "I was up late and slept on the plane."

She nodded and hugged me again, "A day by the pool will be good for you."

"Always. I hear family is coming Sunday?"

"A cookout." She looked at Amy then back to me. "I suppose your sister told you about Monday?"

"No." I slowly smirked, "I guessed, but she neither confirmed nor denied."

"Your father's going to give Wendy the day off and spend the day with Katie while we do a bit of shopping then a trip to the spa." She fingered my hair. "Maybe cut some of this."

I pushed her hand away playfully, "Nope."

I felt hands on my shoulders before hearing my dad’s voice, "I can not imagine what you'd look like with shorter hair."

I looked up and behind me with an incredulous look on my face. I pointed across the table at my twin. The one with shorter hair, "Possibly exactly like her?"

"No, you two look nothing alike." Worst dad joke ever. He took me away from mom and hugged me. "How is my youngest daughter?"

"Good. Waking up."

Dad sat on the opposite side of me from mom. "I've never understood how you fall asleep so fast on a plane."

"I like to float."

I turned my attention to mom, "Are we still on for Tuesday?" Mom did exams at a local woman’s shelter. The head counselor, Stacy, had worked at the rehab facility I’d been hidden away in. Going to visit her and the women was always the highlight of any trip back.

"Stacy is excited to see you."

"And me her."

She put her hand over mine," Not a problem to move my day."

"Thank you."

A man who looked to be a few years older than me approached our table. From the ID badge on his white coat, I knew his name was. Dr. Burns and he was a Neuro Fellow.

"Dr. Marcum, I didn't know you had two beautiful daughters and granddaughter."

"I’m overrun with beautiful women. I'm very lucky."

"Of course," he looked at my mom, “Dr. Marcum as well."

I looked at Amy to see her cover her mouth with her hand. Eligible doctor as bait was new.

Dad introduced us, "Emma is down from New York for a long weekend. Always hoping we can persuade her to move back home."

I looked at the bait, "I hope he's as clear with what he wants from you."

Bait laughed, "I'm lucky to have the opportunity to train with your father."

I was feeling like a prize to be won. Thankfully, there was someone else who thought I was a prize in a less icky way. I didn't respond to bait, preferring to take a drink of my coffee.

"I need to check post-ops. Nice to meet you, Emma. I'll see you upstairs, Dr. Marcum." He nodded to my mom and was off.

Amy burst out laughing, "Oh dad, that was horrible."

"What?" He shrugged, "Young, single, wants to stay here in Alpharetta. We could invite him to dinner. I know his schedule."

I groaned. I guess now was the time. "I appreciate your attempt to lure me back, but I don’t think my boyfriend would like me going on a date with someone who isn't him."

Amy perked up, "Boyfriend?"

"There's a picture of us on Instagram. I’ve been waiting for you to comment.”

"No!" She whipped out her phone. "This picture of the volleyball tournament is the only... oh wait... there is a man wrapped around you. I didn't pay attention."

"Let us see," my mom took the phone. "This is too small. Plus, he's hidden behind you in a hat. We can barely see him."

"He must be ugly." Amy stole a bite of Katie's ice cream.

"He is not ugly."

"Deformed in some way. A huge hairy mole in the center of his forehead like a third eye."

I laughed at her, "Are we thirteen again?"

"Thirteen was fun."

My parents were enjoying our banter, I was too. Mom looked at me, "Do you have a better picture?"

"I do." I pulled up the one from the festival with the teddy bear. "This was a couple of weeks ago. I won the bear."

I handed my phone to mom. Her eyebrows raised. "Not deformed. Or Ugly. Not even close. He looks familiar."

Amy took my phone and in under two seconds looked at me with her mouth hanging open, "Carter Baizen?"

"I didn't know you watched Gossip Girl?" I was in Seattle before it premiered.

"Everyone at school did. I only pretended I didn’t."

Dad took my phone, instantly smiling, "You look like you're having fun."

I laughed, "It was a fun day."

Mom looked at me then Amy, "Who is Carter?"

"He was a character in Gossip Girl. Hot, but an ass. The actor who played him went on to in the Marvel Movies as the Winter Soldier."

Dad scrunched up his face, "The brain damaged assassin who killed Tony’s mother?"

"Yes." I was not about to argue brain washed versus brain damaged with a neurosurgeon. "His name is Sebastian Stan."

I took my phone back and swiped to a picture of us at the volleyball tournament. Dad raised his eyebrows with a nod. Mom said, "He's very handsome."

Amy smirked, "If I swipe will I find nudes."

"Sorry, no."

"No, I won’t find them or no you don’t have any."

"Don't have."

"Damn."

I don't know what I expected from Amy, but this wasn't it. I hadn't told them about Jimmy. I just brought him home. He was the last real boyfriend. Amy’s current reaction was much more typical of early high school. My parents looked cautious.

Amy cut her eyes up to me, "Kissing in the dark restaurant. Go you, little sister."

Dad turned his attention to me, "Is this serious?"

I could feel the tension leech out of me and my face soften with a smile, "Yes, it is."

"When do we get to meet him?"

I shrugged, "We can FaceTime him after dinner. He's getting ready for a role and is home."

"I'm looking forward to meeting him." Mom put her hand on my arm. "What's he like?"

"He's very sweet. Awkward at times and trips over himself. We laugh all the time and have these great conversations about books, movies, and music. He's very good to me." I didn't want to talk non-stop about him. I wanted them to know of him and over the weekend they'd learn about him. About us. "I'm sure you'll get sick of hearing about him. What are we doing for dinner tonight?"

Katie yelled, "Pizza!"

"I love pizza." There was an amazing pizza place near the house. We’d been going there since we were Katie’s age.

Amy agreed with me, "Easy and we don't have to get out of the pool."

I looked at my arm, "I desperately need a tan."

Dad stood up, "I'm going to get back to work so I can get out of here to enjoy my girls."

"Tell Dr. Friendly the date's off."

Dad glared at Amy. I didn't try to hide my smile. Mom stood while shaking her head. I got up and hugged them. I stayed still while they walked away then looked at Amy, "Let's get out of here. Can I drive?" I was feeling a little out of control and needed to be in charge of driving.

Amy threw me the keys, "As long as you can talk and drive."

Any guesses what the topic of conversation was? The drive home wasn’t long. Walking into the house I felt much more at ease. I think I was more nervous than I was aware of. Sebastian's important.

Amy handed Katie off to the nanny, Wendy. That felt familiar. We'd grown up in this house. This scene had happened innumerable times when we walked into the house. I waved when Katie turned on her way downstairs to her playroom. I followed Amy up the stairs to my room. She stopped at my door, "Are you going to unpack? And call Sebastian?"

"No." I shook my head, "I'll do both later. Can you send me the picture of me with Katie at the airport?"

"Absolutely. We'll be thirty soon. Bio-clock is ticking."

I was aghast, "Amelia! Our mother is an Ob/Gyn. You know that's not true." We laughed.

"Ok, so he can see how good you look with a kid."

I sighed dramatically, "Everything is not about Sebastian. Plain old Instagram. Me and my niece." I’m not playing those games with him. "The picture I'm going to have you take of me in my bikini... that's all about him."

That perked her up, "We'll get Wendy to take a twin picture."

I rolled my eyes, "He'll enjoy that too."

Five minutes later I was jogging down the stairs and heading out the French doors. The water was sparkling with the sunlight. It was hot and sticky outside making floating perfect. I threw a couple of towels on the loungers and threw two floats into the pool. Amy was coming out the door as I grabbed my phone off the table. I unlocked before handing it to her.

Amy followed me around the pool, "Remember when we'd pretend we were models and take pictures of our fashion shows?"

"I do. Our phones would be full of them. I’ll need to learn more editing skills when the wrinkles show up."

Amy rubbed at the corners of her eyes, "Crows feet already."

"I have a great eye cream." She took some of me then we got Wendy to take a couple of us, ending with us floating in the pool holding hands. I hopped onto the pool edge and took my phone back. I waited for Wendy to go inside, "Ok, jump out and take one more of me on the float.” Amy took my phone and I took off my bikini, lying face down on the float.

"I cannot believe I'm partaking in this."

"Oh please, who better. It's my naked ass and yours looks identical."

"My ass doesn't look like that anymore. Pregnancy stretched that out too."

I looked at my twin in her black one-piece with cut out sides. She always had the thinner body I wanted. After Katie, she'd not lost the last bit of baby weight from her stomach and her butt. "You look great, Amy."

She put her hands over her breasts, "These have stayed a little bigger too."

"I think I’m insulted."

Taking the picture Amy asked, "Are you going to turn over?"

"Absolutely not."

"Seriously? He has seen it, right?"

"Yes." I slid into the water and started putting my suit back on. Anything that naked he or I was taking.

Amy was back on her float before I was on mine, "I've sent nudes. Not just my butt."

"To whom, dear sister?"

"It's been years ago now. He lives in Marietta. I met him at a playground with Katie. Single parents’ version of a bar. Only he was pretending to be single."

I cringed, "Ouch, I'm sorry. How did you find out?"

"When his wife called me from his phone. We'd been seeing each other for a couple of months I thought I was falling in love with him, but I was just a side piece. He wanted to keep it going even after." She shuddered, "Not mistress material."

I made a decision to trust her with something. It had been a long time, "I never told you why Jimmy and I broke up. He'd been cheating with another lawyer in his firm for months. As the one who was cheated on, I thank you for refusing to go on with it once you knew."

"Did you know the other woman?"

"Yep, even considered her a friend."

"I'm always paranoid now that there's a hidden wife. After Jimmy do you worry Sebastian will cheat?"

I didn't need to think, but I took a moment anyway. "I'm not worried about him cheating. I don't think he would. If he does... I've survived it before."

We shared a look I hadn't anticipated. We’d both survived things. I reached for her hand. "I love you, Amelia."

"Love you too, Emiliana."

"What about now? Seeing anyone."

"Maybe sorta. Back after Christmas a bunch of us from high school got together. Max was there. He's divorced with a daughter in first grade. He has custody and wanted to wait until summer to move back so his parents can help with her. We texted and talked some. He moved back a couple of weeks ago. We've gone out to dinner. It was good. He'll be there tomorrow."

I remembered Max very well. He was a baseball player who looked very good in those pants. He was a year ahead of us and I had no idea what he'd done after high school. I didn't keep up with anyone except the occasional text or Instagram from a couple of girls on the volleyball team. Anything I knew was tidbits from Amy. She'd tried to get me to go to her five and ten year reunion, but I didn't graduate from here. I went to my reunions back in Seattle. Kept up with more friends from there and saw them when I was home. "Didn't you have a crush on Max?"

I recognized the smile on Amy's face. She looked just like me when I'd been caught. "He won't let me forget."

We laid in the pool laughing and talking. It had been a long time since I'd felt this close to her. I can't be sure if that's her, me, or a little of both. Doesn't matter because it was just good and before we knew it mom and dad were home. They brought Katie with them out to the pool deck. "We sent Wendy home. Just family this weekend."

Amy sat up, "Remember we're going out on the lake tomorrow."

Mom smiled, "I remember. Are you two hungry?"

The second she mentioned food my stomach growled. I put my hand over, "Very."

A discussion about pizza toppings ensued. At the end I got out of the pool, "I'm going shower before the food gets here."

Amy followed, "Me too."

This has spurred scientists, physicians, activists, public officials, and, albeit less in the United States, lawmakers to join in the quest for quiet, which is far more elusive than it may seem. “Quiet places,” says the acoustic ecologist Gordon Hempton, “have been on the road to extinction at a rate that far exceeds the extinction of species.” […] Study after study has reached the hardly earth-shattering conclusion that we largely prefer the sounds of nature to those of machines. A 2008 research project that played subjects 75 recordings, ranging from a cat’s meow to skidding tires, found the five most agreeable sounds to be running water, bubbling water, flowing water, a small waterfall, and a baby laughing. Other studies—echoing spa brochures—tell us that natural sounds promote relaxation. And yet we’re muffling them with our racket, to the detriment of other species. The concentration of stress hormones in elk and wolf feces spikes when snowmobiles arrive, then returns to normal when the machines disappear; a similar pattern was observed for North Atlantic right whales subjected to the whine of ship traffic. (One bioacoustics researcher told The New York Times that the acoustic emissions of air guns, used to map the ocean floor, are creating a “living hell” for undersea creatures.) Birds in noisy habitats become screechier to make themselves heard above our din—sparrows that “used to sound like, say, George Clooney would now sound like Bart Simpson,” one ornithologist told a reporter—and this phenomenon has been linked to decreases in species diversity, bird populations, and tree growth. Though data are scarce, the world appears to be growing louder. The National Park Service’s Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division, which sends researchers to measure the acoustics of the American outdoors, estimates that noise pollution doubles or triples every 30 years. The EPA last measured our nation’s volume in 1981; assuming (generously) that our collective cacophony has remained constant, calculations from 2013 estimate that more than 145 million Americans are exposed to noise exceeding the recommended limits. In the absence of more recent surveys, the volume at which emergency vehicles shriek is telling, given that sirens must be loud enough to pierce the ambient noise level. According to measurements by R. Murray Schafer, a fire-engine siren from 1912 reached 88 to 96 decibels measured from 11 feet away, whereas by 1974, sirens’ screeches hit 114 decibels at the same distance—an increase in volume, he noted, of about half a decibel a year. The latest fire-engine sirens howl louder still: 123 decibels at 10 feet.

I have the somewhat simple problems of living in a small city: dogs barking at the crack of dawn, leaf blowers, construction compressors, and motorcycles. I have come to accept the more remote whine of trains, heading north and south along the Hudson. While dogs barking may seem natural, the unnatural trains are easier to take.

Five Housing Market Predictions For 2020

By Fred McGill In 2019 we saw interest rates drop, housing inventory remain low and hot markets continue to heat up. Will those trends persist in 2020? Will home sales remain stagnant in the new year? Will an influx of new housing inventory come onto the market? Will younger consumers stop renting and start owning? Here are five predictions that are likely to shape the 2020 housing market and help us answer these questions and more: 1. Rising rents will lead to more millennial buyers. Contrary to widely held beliefs, most millennials actually do want to own homes as opposed to renting apartments. In a Chase Home Lending study, 70% of millennials surveyed said they would be willing to cut back on activities like spa trips, shopping and going to the movies to save money for a home purchase. That says a lot for this generation. One major factor that's been holding millennials back from homeownership is an inventory constraint issue in the hottest markets. It has become increasingly difficult to buy a home in cities like Nashville; Austin, Texas; and Raleigh, North Carolina. In those cities, job growth has outstripped housing, leading to a sparse housing supply below the $300,000 price point. While young buyers in these markets possess the job security and earning potential to purchase homes, not enough good housing options exist at their price point. This has led to crowds of buyers waiting on the sidelines in 2019. But there's a counteracting force that is beginning to shift the dynamic. New, luxury apartment inventory is flooding markets like Atlanta; Phoenix; Portland, Oregon; and Dallas, pushing up the median rent price and making the rent-versus-own argument a bit more balanced. A Realtor.com survey found that rising rents were the influencing factor that triggered 23% of millennial home buyers to make the decision to buy instead of rent. Expect this phenomenon to become more pronounced in 2020 and to influence more and more millennials to take the plunge into homeownership. 2. Baby boomers will sell their homes at a higher clip. Zillow recently published a study that found baby boomers are preparing to sell approximately 27% of America’s homes between now and 2040. Many of these homeowners will ultimately be seeking newer, low-maintenance homes with fewer stairs to climb and smaller yards to maintain. So, think of that four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath home in the suburbs that was built in 1985, has had one owner and has never been sold. There will be several thousand of those coming onto the market in 2020. This should help unclog the inventory pipeline problem that we currently have in the U.S. 3. There will be a new construction boom. Due to the shortage of existing homes for sale, potential buyers are increasingly considering new construction properties. At the same time, in December 2019 the National Association of Home Builders reported that home builder confidence reached the highest level in 20 years. Mortgage data suggests the same, as mortgage applications to purchase newly built homes were up 27% annually in November 2019, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. According to economists at Fannie Mae, new housing starts are expected to reach their highest level since 2007 — the beginning of the housing crisis. In fact, Fannie Mae’s Economic and Strategic Research Group predicts builders will expand production by 10% in 2020. And this trend is unlikely to slow after 2020. The forecast for 2021 shows more than 1 million newly built single-family homes, which would mark a post-recession high. This would be well below the annual peak of about 1.7 million single-family housing units in 2005, but still a big improvement over the last few years. 4. Home prices will keep climbing, but growth rates will slow. The S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller Home Price Indices, which track U.S. residential real estate prices, noted a year-over-year increase of 3.3% as of October 2019 and suggested a similar trajectory for 2020. According to Craig Lazerra, managing director and global head of index investment strategy at S&P Dow Jones, “If people were waiting to see if house prices would actually decline, as they did in ... that’s probably not going to happen, at least given the current economic backdrop.” In 2019, the biggest home price gains occurred in cities like Phoenix; Tampa; and Charlotte, North Carolina, which all registered price increases of more than 4.8% year over year. States in the Sunbelt and cities in Texas appear to show big gains again in 2020. Luckily for home buyers, the days of double-digit, year-over-year price increases are likely gone, even in the hottest markets. 5. Gentrification will continue in the fastest-growing cities. Evolving socioeconomic and racial dynamics will persist in urban cores of America's fastest-growing cities. According to a recent report by the New York Times, urban neighborhoods are attracting wealthier home buyers in a pattern that frequently makes it more challenging for middle-class home buyers to purchase properties in the neighborhoods where their families may have lived for the last 40 years. That said, many city planners agree that some forms of gentrification have yielded positive results for citizens of larger cities where impoverished communities were previously stuck in neutral for decades. Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia; and Atlanta are examples of cities that I have observed manage gentrification in thoughtful ways, leading to positive change for longtime residents and new residents alike. Overall, home buyers can expect the housing market to remain stable in 2020. This sentiment appears to be validated by economists, lenders and builders alike. A possible wild card could be the 2020 presidential election. But even in a big election year, and no matter the outcome, with unemployment at record lows and consumer sentiment near all-time highs, it is unlikely the housing market will suffer a downturn in 2020. The historical inn, which initially opened in 1875, only underwent a multi-million dollar facelift, which makes for 32 guest bedrooms and cottages which are as lavish as they are comfy (but not comfy at a cramped-New-York-apartment feeling ). The beds are topped with linens; the baths feature walk-in closets; and I've a sense that when my sister and I moved to The Leela Palace, we would never argue. Come Memorial Day, there are us hanging side by side on beach seats.

Castle Loma, designed to resemble a medieval castle in residential Toronto, opened in 1914.

Like many grandiose structures, Castle Loma has stood through its share of triumph and tragedy. Sir Henry and his wife spent fewer than ten years living in Casa Loma before financial reverses forced them to abandon the property; the flamboyant Pellatt died virtually penniless.

For the past 70 years, Casa Loma has been open as a tourist attraction. They pay a fee to enter and can take a self-guided tour. Many simply explore the fragrant and colorful Casa Loma Gardens, in bloom from May through October.

Casa Loma can also be rented for weddings that range in size from 125 to 1,200 guests and it has an in-house caterer.

Aruba, Bonaire, or Curacao: Which of these Safe Caribbean Islands Is Right for You?

Lying just 15 miles off the coast of South America, Aruba is the closest island to Venezuela, Curacao is approximately 40 miles from Venezuela, and Bonaire is the farthest, at 50 miles away from the coast. American, Canadian, Caribbean and most EU and South American citizens will need a passport (but not a visa to visit) the islands as long as the stay is 30 days or less. If you decide to stay longer, you can apply for an extension of up to 180 days.

Aruba: Out of the trifecta, Aruba is the most developed and touristed island, which also makes it the easiest to get to thanks to an abundance of flights. Airlines like Jet Blue, Delta, and American Airlines fly frequently to Aruba and you can easily get non-stop flights from cities like New York, Toronto, Boston, and Chicago, as well as some European and South American destinations. If you fancy going on a cruise, Aruba is an incredibly popular port of call for cruise ships so you’ll have lots of options if you want to arrive by sea. To get around locally, you can take buses, taxies (which offer fixed pricing) and might even consider renting a car, though the bus service is reliable. You can pick from several daily, 30-minute flights if you want to add a couple days in Bonaire or Curacao to your itinerary.

Bonaire: Perhaps surprisingly, given that the destination is off most tourists’ radars, there are some direct flights several times a week to Bonaire with carriers like American Airlines, Delta and Air Canada from cities like Newark, Houston, Atlanta and Toronto. KLM offers some direct flights from Europe to Bonaire. At just over 100 square miles, the diminutive island is easy to get around by rental car or even by bike. Fixed rate taxis are also available.

Curacao: Being less touristed, there are fewer flights to Curacao than to Aruba, though you can still get some direct or one-stopover-only flights from carriers like Air Canada, KLM, and American Airlines from Miami, Toronto, Newark, Caracas and Amsterdam. In a testament to the destination’s growing popularity, United Airlines just started direct flights to the island in December of 2019. Local bus service is less reliable in Curacao, so if you want to explore the island, you should consider renting a car. While most of the island’s taxis are supposed to be metered or have set fares, there have been reports of unmetered taxis with unpredictable pricing.

One of the most appealing features of all three ABC islands is that they lie outside of the hurricane belt, making them a reliable retreat any time of year with little risk of a tropical storm. Rainfall is equally as predictable with only intermittent rainfall reaching its highest average of about 3.5 inches in the months of November and December. This lack of rain gives the islands a dry, desert-like climate but steady, pleasantly cooling trade winds from the northeast (most noticeable on Aruba) help cut the heat.

Safety in Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao

The ABC Islands are among the safest in the Caribbean. The U.S. Department of State has given them only a Level 1 warning (the lowest possible) to “exercise normal precautions” when visiting. Violent crime is almost unheard of on the islands and there are only minimal reports of petty crime and theft. Unlike many other popular sun-and-surf destinations, the standard of living tends to be quite good with less overall disparity between the have and have-nots, which helps keep crime against tourists at bay.

Most accommodation is centered around the northeast side of the island. The most popular area to stay is known as the high-rise hotel district, located on beautiful Palm Beach — but it can get crowded. Bonaire: The island does not have a highly developed tourism infrastructure (though that’s part of its allure) so your accommodation choices will be much more limited, with most located in the capital port city of Kralendijk. You’ll find small budget hotels, larger resorts, a couple of more upscale offerings and even a hotel with a casino (the Divi Flamingo Beach Resort and Casino). Many hotels cater to divers with dive shops and equipment rentals on site. Aruba: All three of the ABC islands have plenty to offer those searching for cerulean seas and sun-soaked beaches but overall, Aruba, with its awe-inspiring and expansive sandy shoreline, has the most inviting beaches. The island’s most beloved is Palm Beach just on the outskirts of Oranjestad. It’s renown for is soft, white sand, smooth waters and seemingly endless shoreline. Nearby is Palm Beach, which also hosts some of Aruba’s largest and most luxe resorts. These two beaches are good if you want a suntanning spot with convenient access to restaurants and watersports. For something more secluded head south to Baby Beach, so named for its shallow, smooth waters. Flamingo beach, home to a handful of the rather ungainly pink birds can be hard to get to because it’s actually on a private island owned by Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casino and guests not staying at the property have to pay $125 to purchase a pass.

Bonaire: Though beautiful, Bonaire’s beaches are generally not as easily accessible as Aruba’s and Curacao’s. They tend to have a very narrow shoreline with somewhat rockier terrain than the other two islands though they offer serene, largely uncrowded spots for sun worshipping. Take a water taxi out to Klein Bonaire (meaning Little Bonaire in Dutch), an uninhabited islet just offshore from Kralendijk; it’s No Name Beach is a perfect secluded sanctuary with snorkeling just a few feet from shore. Boka Slagbaai in Slagbaai National Park has a large, powdery white sand beach and calm waters.

Curacao: With nearly 40 beaches, Curacao wins for variety. This island’s swaths of sand are generally much smaller than Aruba’s and frequently don’t feature the same extensive choice of amenities, but you’re much more likely to share the surf with locals. The liveliest is Willemstad’s man-made Mambo Beach, where you can easily indulge in a meal or a water activity in-between tanning sessions. Favourited by families and snorkelers, shallow Playa Lagun is nestled in a protected bay hugged by craggy cliffs.

Gangga Island: A Travel Guide to Indonesia’s Offtrack Island

With nothing more than one dive resort and two small villages, Gangga Island in North Sulawesi is truly off the beaten path. If you’re looking for a tropical Indonesian island getaway filled with scuba diving, snorkelling, village visits, and lounging poolside, read on to learn more about Gangga.

It was 6:30 pm when our boat docked at Gangga Island Resort and Spa. The sun had just set behind us, illuminating the sky with a purple hue. Even in the dim lighting, we could see all the way to the rocky bottom of the sea.

Nick and I looked at each other and smiled — if the clarity of the water was this incredible at night, imagine what it would look like during the day.

Greeted by a team of porters and staff, we were led through the property. The air was humid, the ground was sandy and we were surrounded by palm trees. What more could we ask for?

Why Choose Gangga Island?

Ever since our first trip to Indonesia in 2009, we’ve been fascinated with this diverse country. This was our first visit to North Sulawesi and as our van drove from the airport to the pier, we were in awe of the landscape. Passing through the little villages (while dodging sleeping dogs), with volcano and palm tree views, we knew this region of Indonesia would be an exciting adventure.

Gangga Island is located off the tip of mainland North Sulawesi and is part of the Sangihe chain of islands — many of which are still inhabited. While on Gangga, you feel worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the busy cities, and can completely relax.

Getting off track is always something we seek to do. Gangga Island provides that Robinson Crusoe feel, but it’s easy to get here and has all the amenities you need. With culture, natural beauty and numerous day trips on offer, Gangga Island is a traveller’s dream.

Getting to Gangga Island

You’re probably thinking it’s difficult to get here, but it really isn’t. You just need to get to Manado (the capital of North Sulawesi). From there, you take an hour-long van ride to the Serai port (arrange this with the resort, or take public transport). At the port, hop on the private Gangga Resort and Spa boat for a 15-20 minute ride to Gangga Island.

If you’re coming from North America, you can fly to Bali via Taiwan, Japan, or Korea. From there, you can take a direct flight to Manado.

Another option is to fly from North America to Singapore, and fly directly to Manado from there.

Our route was from New York to Bali via a 5-hour layover in Taiwan. We decided to spend a few days in Bali enjoying some downtime before hopping on another plane to Manado.

Gangga Island Resort and Spa Accommodation

Famished after our travel day from Bali, we were offered a fresh coconut, a sandwich, and some fruit to snack on (plus a cold hand towel to wipe off the travel grime from the day!). Inside the main common area/dining area, we were given a quick orientation of the property.

I was paying attention, but I kept looking around at the beautiful structure we were sitting in. The round, wooden, open-air building was stunning. This common area is where breakfast, lunch and some dinners would be served.

We were led to our room down a pathway lined with palm trees, before arriving at our deluxe beachfront bungalow with private gazebo and lounge chairs — this would be our home for the next 4 nights.

As a bonus, we were in the second to last bungalow on the beach, providing extra privacy (fewer people passing by our room), and more tranquillity. There are generators used at the property, but when we visited, all of the solar panels were installed and they were just waiting for one final part to arrive in Manado — things don’t exactly move quickly in Indonesia.

Sliding open the glass doors, we were greeted with high ceilings and lovely dark wood interior, complete with a four-poster bed, air-conditioning and a huge (modern) bathroom. There was a TV, but we didn’t plan on turning it on.

Not only was the inside of the bungalow perfect, but there was a large verandah with a comfortable seating area out front — the ideal spot to watch sunset, and enjoy a morning coffee.

We had just arrived and we already knew four nights wouldn’t be enough in a place like this!

The following morning we were able to see Gangga Island in the light of day, and it was even more stunning than the night before. Seashells littered the white sand, palm and frangipani trees dominated the property, and the Celebes Sea was glistening.

The Underwater World: Scuba diving and Snorkelling

Gangga beach was gorgeous, but we were eager to see what the surrounding islands and reefs had to offer — we didn’t come all the way to North Sulawesi to just sit on a beach.

The first thing on our island holiday itinerary was a snorkel excursion. After only a 5-minute boat ride, we arrived at little Lihaga Island, and jumped in the water with Dolfie, one of the divemasters at Gangga Divers.

The visibility was amazing.

The coral was bright and healthy, and within minutes, we spotted some baby sharks, batfish and angelfish. I was excited to be snorkelling again, but Nick was mainly looking forward to doing some scuba diving the following day.

This area of Indonesia is known for its excellent diving and unique underwater critters of the famous Lembeh Strait and Bunaken National park. There are around 50 dive sites within reach of Gangga Island Resort and Spa, making it a great base for dive trips.

Nick sorted out his gear and had an orientation with the Gangga Divers PADI shop. Safety and professionalism are at the forefront of this dive center and we were pleased to see just two divers for every one divemaster. Plus, the equipment was in great shape, the dive boats were new, the dive briefings were thorough, and Nick was able to dive with nitrox.

Nick headed out on two dives, Sempini and Pulisan.

While there were lots of fish species and coral, the highlights included a cuttlefish, turtle, ornate ghost pipefish, seahorses, blue-spotted stingray, and a pinnatus batfish.

For divers and snorkellers, this part of Indonesia is a great place to visit. And, if you’re not a diver yet, you can take your PADI Open Water course here at the dive resort — what a beautiful place to get certified.

The Villages on Gangga Island

During those “non-diving days”, there are two small villages on this island you can visit — Gangga Satu and Gangga Dua. This translates to Gangga “one” and “two”, not the most imaginative names.

Gangga Satu is predominantly Christian, while Gangga Dua is Muslim.

After completing a few dives and a snorkel trip with Dolfie, we asked him if he’d like to show us around his village (Satu). Dolfie agreed, and together we set off by foot down a dusty, dirt pathway.

The residents of both villages have a strong tie with the ocean and are either boat builders or fishermen. This was evident after walking for just a couple of minutes when we saw 4 men sanding and painting some wooden boats.

Within seconds of arriving at Gangga Satu, we spotted two boys running down towards the water. Dolfie asked what was going on and they said a man had caught a huge marlin and had just brought it in.

We made our way to the shoreline and sure enough, there was a massive marlin that had just been gutted, cleaned and cut into chunks for sale. Without a proper fishing rod, and with just a small wooden boat, this man was able to pull in a 50 pound fish with his hands!

Continuing on, we were greeted numerous times with Ciao!. We found it odd that these villagers on such a remote island were speaking Italian to us, and later found out it’s because the owner of Gangga Island Resort and Spa is Italian and they think this is the way to greet all foreigners.

We eventually arrived at Dolfie’s home where his son climbed a palm tree to retrieve hydrating coconuts, his brother-in-law was building a boat, all of the women were doing each other’s hair and tending to the children, and the older kids were running around or riding their bikes. Chickens and dogs came and went — it was a very lively scene.

It seemed as though everything happened in the front yard of the home. We sat there and took it all in.

Saying our goodbyes and thank-you’s to Dolfie’s family, we continued on the hot pathway to Gangga Dua, and arrived just in time for the Muslim call to prayer.

We spotted the small mosque bellowing the prayer in the distance, and we also noticed right away that there weren’t any dogs here (Muslims believe that dogs are impure), but instead, lots of goats were roaming the roads.

We came across a group of people playing cards and right away one of the women grabbed my hand to shake it and welcome me to her village. Performing the customary handshake, followed by touching your heart, I thanked her for having us.

Next to them was a group of giggling teenagers — one of whom could speak a bit of English and was eager to practice with us. A few minutes later, a woman holding her baby wanted a photo with me, and a group of kids ran over for a picture as well.

A man was snoring on a wooden table, an elderly woman gutted some small snapper fish, and everyone gathered around us to get a better look — some kids were even touching our skin, and most were staring at our blue/green eyes.

It was such a great experience!

Feeling overheated, rather than walking back to the resort, a boat came to Gangga Dua to take us to our bungalow. The villagers waved goodbye as our boat whisked us back to the southern end of the island.

It was a perfect day.

Gangga Island Resort and Spa helps out these villages in many ways, both financially and in the form of education.

Numerous people from the villages are trained in hospitality and tourism, and many are employed full-time (divemasters, waiters, cleaning staff, etc.).

The resort has renovated one of the schools and built a new kindergarten school.

They offer scholarships to students.

Gangga Island Resort and Spa is constantly educating the people on the importance of protecting the sea and marine life.

Locals are employed to do beach clean-ups.

A portion of profits are donated towards community development & education programs.

When travelling, it’s always nice to know where your tourism dollars are going. And in the case of Gangga Island Resort and Spa, a portion of your room rate goes to the village. Plus, as a guest, you have the option to donate some money towards school supplies for the children.

Environmental Projects

While we were enjoying a morning beach walk at low tide, we noticed some round, metal humps in the water just out front of our bungalow.

We initially guessed they were lobster or fish traps (and assumed that the locals had set them there), but later found out they were placed there to prevent erosion.

Prior to 2015, there was a serious issue with erosion in the area — due to changes in the environment, higher seas, stronger storms, and currents.

The destruction was so devastating that the beach was practically lost, trees were uprooted and falling into the sea, and the bungalows were close to being washed away.

Thankfully, in 2015 the artificial biorock reef project was created.

Under the water, numerous concrete and iron structures were sunk (the metal “humps” we had seen), which would act as artificial reefs. This not only helps the marine life population (coral grows on these structures), but it also acts as a natural breakwater during storms (breaking up the strength of the waves before they reach the shore).

A small amount of electricity is passed through the biorocks, which assists with the growth of coral, and the prevention of rust. Today, these artificial reefs are flourishing and are home to coral and many fish. Plus, the erosion has been completely reversed and there’s once again a sandy beach on Gangga Island.

We’ve seen manmade reefs before, but never heard of biorocks, or seen erosion completely fixed. This is such an incredible project.

Gangga Island For Non-Divers

Even if you’re not a scuba diver or snorkeller, you can still enjoy a holiday on Gangga Island.

We spent our days snorkelling, scuba diving, visiting villages and enjoying the large saltwater pool at the resort, but you can also take some day trips from here.

The Tangkoko Nature Reserve is home to tarsiers (one of the smallest primates), Celebes black Crested Macaque, marsupials, wild pigs and much more. This offtrack nature reserve here is pristine and if you’re into jungle hikes and wildlife, you don’t want to miss Tangkoko. Starting around 11:30am from Gangga Island Resort and Spa, this is about a 9 hour day.

Other day trip options include hiking to the active Mount Mahawu volcano and visiting the traditional Minihasa houses, Buddhist temple and colourful lake in the Sulawesi highlands.

For a relaxing hour or two, book a treatment at the Pasung Spa which offers everything from body scrubs and massages to facials and manicures. The spa can also accommodate a couple’s massage.

If you’d rather just relax at the resort, that’s a great option as well. The large saltwater pool is surrounded by palm trees offering shade during the day. This is a great place to chill out with a book and enjoy the afternoon. Of course, you could always just go for a dip offshore (ask the staff about any current in the water), or simply wander around the property.

We were blown away by the hospitality of the staff and the quality of the meals. The only thing is, mealtimes are set.

I brought snacks from Bali thinking that we’d probably be hungry outside of mealtimes. The snacks never left my bag. We were full and satisfied the entire stay.

Depending on how many guests are staying at the resort, meals will be either served a la carte, or buffet style. We experienced both during our four-night stay, and while a la carte is always a better option, the buffet was fresh and offered a variety of food, both Indonesian and western.

As I said at the start, there’s only one resort on this island, so choosing where to stay is easy! There are two types of bungalows — deluxe and superior (deluxe rooms are better than superior).

You can book scuba diving and accommodation as a package deal, or just the room by itself. Three meals are included in the cost of your stay.

Final Thoughts

When we left after 4 nights, it felt as though we had just begun to really get to know the staff and were just beginning to settle into island life.

If (when) we return to Gangga Island, the only thing we would do differently would be to stay longer. With a week here, Nick could do some scuba diving further afield, I could visit more snorkel sites, and we would both go on a couple of day trips.
