The (tiktok) kids aren't alright they're so fucking stupid.

I saw a video speculating on Eddie's sexuality because of the Family Feud thing, and I posted a comment as part of a discussion saying Eddie's commitment issues are queercoded, and multiple baby queers got pissed at me saying queer people shouldn't be part of entertainment and that queercoding is a "personal choice."

So many of these kids think queercoding is a real life woman driving a subaru or a real life man with his nails painted, not a long history of using certain traits and behaviors in commercialized media to indicate that a character is queer when other forces (laws, executives, etc. or in more modern times, the progression of the story) prohibit them from saying it out loud.

Eddie is unable to commit to women, but he can commit to plenty of other things- he even said his marriage to Shannon was a commitment to the church and their child, not to her, which is part of why the marriage failed. He had a panic attack when things started getting serious with another woman, and a third moving in with him revived his religious trauma. It's all part of a larger narrative that screams "THIS MAN IS GAY."

Baby queers on tiktok are only seeing a hyper-sanitized version of queerness and think that and some discourse buzzwords make up the queer experience, and now they're trying so hard to force that view of queerness onto others that they've circled back to the Hays Code.

We didn't fight for our voices to be heard and our stories to be told, especially in complex and respectful ways, just to have some kid who can't even comfortably say Dick van Dyke's full name tell us we shouldn't exist in media.

So I'm a big Star Trek fan and the first time I saw two women kissing was in DS9 in 1995. I was 13. Except that there's some gender fuckery involved there (past lives when they were a het couple etc. etc.) but you know what? Teenage me did not care. Baby bi teenage me saw two women and went, oh my God they see us. We're allowed to exist on TV. And people threw a goddamn fit about this kiss that lasted less than 5 seconds.

And then I rewatched Voyager as a 30-something, and I realized that when they were exploring Seven of Nine and relationships, nobody ever thought to ask if maybe the reason she was having a hard time was because everyone she attempted to date was male. Nobody ever said, what if you went on a date with a woman? And it made me really sad, because Star Trek had never seemed to be afraid of that. But it was on a different network and maybe they couldn't do that on UPN. I don't know.

Anyway, my point here is that it would have been fucking great to have the new She-Ra when I was a kid, but we didn't. We had Sailor Moon dubs in the 90s that tried to pretend Sailors Neptune and Uranus were just really good friends. We had shows that celebrated queer people (Queer as Folk, the L Word) and they were on like, Showtime, which meant they weren't really accessible to a lot of people.

We watch the old stuff and we talk about what it was like because it matters that this is who we were. It matters because there are a lot of people who think that showing queer people on TV in a positive light is indoctrination. Those people are getting elected and they're passing laws. So don't take your She-Ra for granted, mkay? Because the Boomers and the Xers and the Elder Millennials lived this and celebrate the bravery of the folks who coded us where they could. And, there are a lot of countries in the world where this is still how they have to do it. We're very lucky that we can have queer folks on TV at all.

Baby queers should watch If These Walls Could Talk 2. And then maybe you'll start to get it.
