I had this crazy idea last night: a Batman Musical Episode.
Not just any musical episode, Joker's Sweeney Todd.
Tumblr media
The Sondheim musical told through the Batfamily and the Rogues Gallery, with Joker as Sweeney himself, and Harley Quinn as Ms. Lovett. There would be some changes to the lyrics and overall story, obviously.
The main story would be like this:
Several times in the comics, it's alluded that the Joker may assume different personalities and memories over time. Sometimes he's a harmless trickster, sometimes he's a total homicidal psychopath. Sometimes he was a failed comedian that was driven insane thanks to a very bad day, and in others he was always an evil gangster.
Imagine if someday the Joker wakes up with a new personality. Now he is a barber and he calls himself Benjamin Barker. He has vague memories of a tragic past that is probably 100% false.
Harley Quinn helps Joker escape from Arkham, and she manipulates his increasingly delirious fake memories and hallucinations in order to finally get closer with him. However, Joker's and Harley's true sadistic and cruel side comes to life, as both reenact the Sweeney and Lovett's scheme of the musical.
Joker starts murdering people in his barbershop, carving smiles on their faces, while Harley uses what's left of their bodies to create "Happy Meals" in her new diner.
We then would constantly jump around two stories: the first one is reality, where we see Batman uncovering the true atrocities of the latest Joker's and Harley's scheme. The second one is Joker's delirious mind, where he is creating a surreal fanfic about himself.
One is naturalistic, the other is meant to clearly take place in a theatre stage. Basically all the musical sequences are just his delirium. And we see how the musical sequences influence on reality and vice versa.
In Joker's story, he was an innocent barber that was sent to Arkham by a corrupt Commissioner Gordon and an evil Batman. Batman was obsessed with his wife, and wanted Joker away so he could have her all for himself. Then after Joker's wife has the same fate as Sweeney's wife in the musical, Commissioner Gordon and Batman took Joker's baby daughter Johanna to raise.
Yeah, in Joker's mind, Barbara is Johanna, Batman is Judge Turpin, and Commissioner Gordon is the Beadle. And I forgot to add that Dick Grayson gets to be Anthony, the wide-eyed sailor that's hopeless in love with Johanna.
Heck in the musical, there's a scene where Anthony breaks Johanna from an insane asylum, allowing the inmates to run free through the streets of London. Imagine this, but with Arkham inmates running through Gotham.
In the end Batman manages to capture Joker, but not before he stabs Harley for lying to him, and kills a beggar woman who got in the way of his plans. Joker's is obsessed that he accidentally killed Lucy, his long lost wife, and Batman is left wondering if there's any truth behind that or if it's just another Joker delusion.
Honestly, I don't know if Batman or comic books fans have anything in common with musical theatre fans, but "Epiphany" could be easily a Joker song, and "A Little Priest" was made for Joker and Harley Quinn.

sweeney todd backstory hc’s 🖤🥧🔪
- benjamin barker was a surprise child!!! his older sister and brother were already 11 and 13 years old when he was born. his father was distant and rarely home, and was far from thrilled about another baby, another mouth to feed, a boy to raise. so he just ran from his responsibilities for benjamin. ben always knew he had rejected him, yet still fought for his affection to no avail. picture a little cat bringing dead mice to his owner to please him, and only getting scolded. that was ben. always trying to be a good boy.
- soo he was a total mommy’s boy. and she adored him back, being the baby and an arguably perfect child. he was intelligent, compassionate, gentle, mature, and SO polite. his mother loved him dearly and doted on him until she passed away from illness when he was a teenager. he was devastated. it was his first experience with profound loss. AND DEFINITELY NOT HIS LAST (edit: him being a mommy’s boy and having a bad father is Very Important bc he loves women and hates men once he becomes sweeney)
- once he was grown and met lucy, she turned his whole world upside down in the best way. she was the first person to show him what love could be after his mother. they were dizzy for eachother, and once the initial high of infatuation had worn off, they had just begun settling into the comfortable domestic bond of marriage & parenthood. (then turpin ruined it Lol.)
- when lucy told ben she was pregnant, he internally vowed to be the father he always needed. to protect and love and be there. he hated himself beyond words for breaking his promise to his girl and believed he had failed in the most unforgivable way possible.
- tobias reminds sweeney of young benjamin barker. his innocence, his bright eyes, being glued to his mom’s hip. he always keeps his distance from toby because its just too distressing to remember what he used to be.
- nellie was 20 when she married albert, who was almost forty. they met through him butchering the meat for her pie shop, which she had been running since she was 17. he was not at all what she imagined for a husband, but he had the money and good standing in town for them to get by.
- she had to marry the first stable man she could find just to survive, with no family she knew of left. she loved him — kind of in the way you love an uncle. familiar and warm, but nowhere near the passionate relationship she longed for.
- she always felt like her young womanhood had been stolen from her by her bleak situation. she knew she was beautiful and charming, and she always wondered how marriage would’ve turned out if she hadn’t been so desperate.
- and then there was benjamin barker, her secret dream. he was a few years older than her, dark and handsome and kind, with strong features but the softest eyes she’d ever seen. though she was confined to her marriage, she never stopped herself from indulging in fantasies of the man.
- since he had moved his new barbershop into the space above her, they had been cordial. benjamin thought mrs. lovett generous, pretty, and friendly. that was about it. he was pretty clueless to her feelings about him. besides, she was a married woman.
- lucy came along, and the wedding, and the baby. nellie was terribly jealous and dissatisfied with her life as she watched another woman, a woman with the privilege of settling with a man who had practically nothing, live out her desires. she felt equally guilty for her dark envy of a happy little family who only treated her with kindness and respect.
- when benjamin barker was sent away she fell into pieces. that was when she realized just how terribly she loved him, how deep in over her head she was with her obsession. that impossible ember of hope that one day ben would be hers was the only thing motivating her.
- when turpin ruined lucy and stole johanna, mrs. lovett was not at all happy. it was a heartbreaking situation she tried to not get involved in for her own sake. yet, a rotten tendril of content would worm into her chest sometimes, reveling in what had happened as some sort of rotten justice for all the pleasures lucy had enjoyed in her life. especially the perfect husband she never knew she stole. nellie used to hate that evil, selfish part of herself.
- a couple years after ben was sent away, albert died. then it was just her and her pies and some loyal customers. gradually, even they stopped coming, and business came to a screeching halt. she had hit rock bottom— no money, friends, or family.

Currently attempting to write a fanfic about Nellie pre musical since she’s a fantastically complex character, so here’s a few random head canons I’ve developed for this story so far:
-in modern times she’d identify as bi or pan, but because it’s Victorian England, and she’s religious, it just leads to a lot of self hatred for her feelings. when she meets the Barkers she falls in love with both of them. This leads to hatred of Lucy due to Nellie being jealous that she’s with Ben, but also hating that she has feeling for her. -during the time Ben was sent away, she began to grow closer to Lucy, which also made her hatred of Lucy fester more and more. Eventually when Lucy admitted that Turpin assaulted her, Nellie blows up with accusations of her being a temptress or a succubus, and is ultimately the reason Lucy tries to end her own life, and Nellie even encouraged her to do it.
-she’s the one who sent Lucy to bedlam instead of a hospital. She almost immediately regretted it, but always attempts to justify it to herself.
-grew up without a mother, she died when she was young, and was raised by her father who was a butcher. Not at all squeamish due to this. Her father would even let her help out sometimes.
-her aunt Nettie was her favorite but also really messed her up. She’s the one who gave Nellie her love of baking, music, and the sea but also was extremely religious and would constantly belittle young Nellie for every little thing she did that Nettie viewed as ungodly. She also looked down on Nellie’s father Due to him being poorer, and for taking away her sister and raising Nellie the way he did. Nettie enforced a lot of Nellie’s self hatred and issues with herself.
-it’s been a life long dream to have children, but she is infertile, and blames it on her feelings towards women. She helped raise Johanna as a nannie, and when Ben got sent away she stepped in as a second parent. Was absolutely heartbroken when Turpin took baby Jo away.

Call Me Nellie, Will You?
summary:
nellie pov fic for y'all *big smooch* After Mr. Barker is taken, Nellie makes a rushed decision to aid the family he leaves behind and protect them.
Mrs. Lovett stared out of the little window that overlooked the cobbled road of Fleet Street, her head in her hands as she halfheartedly watched the engorged droplets of rain speed down the worn panes of glass, the dark clouds racing the other way as if to escape.
The faint fussing of a baby caught her attention again, and her eyes widened in alarm as she whipped around, her grip on the countertop turning her pale knuckles white. That bloody judge had been poking around again recently, and to Nellie, it was the doings of a guardian angel of some sort that all the days of crying hadn't reeled him in again like flies to a rotting corpse.
She suspected it was evening now, from the pale orange-black sky she spied through her front door's peephole. After touching down carefully onto steady ground from her makeshift plywood step, Mrs. Lovett quickly kicked it under the row of cabinets that served as her worktop, turning on her heel and descending the basement stairs to check on Lucy and the infant that seemingly couldn't keep its cavernous gob shut to save a life.
By God, Nellie. Have a heart for the poor things, will you? It's only been a week or so! Her inner voice needled painfully as the jingle of the bakehouse keys sounded in her grip, just as grating as every other noise she'd heard in this bloody shop.
The padlock fell from its perch as the key was turned, and Mrs. Lovett bit back a yelp, fumbling as she caught it in her cold hands. If the lock had hit the tiles, it would've meant exposure to danger that was very, very likely, what with the absence of the daytime's clamor in the streets around them.
Mrs. Lovett straightened back up as the padlock was placed on the latch, and she steeled herself to be nice, for Chrissake to the woman she felt she was always going to be second fiddle to in Benjamin's gaze. But honestly, it felt like the right thing to do. She hadn't done anything 'right' since she married Albert almost a decade ago. And now he was dead, so that said a lot about what kind of person Mrs. Lovett was.
"Everything decent down 'ere?" She called out softly to the darkness, and soon after her voice was answered when a trembling figure appeared, Johanna now asleep in her embrace. Nellie's face fell with dismay, and she strode to Lucy's side, gently dusting the shivering young mother off.
"If I may say anything, Mrs. Lovett, thank you dearly for your generosity." The distressed-looking woman replied quietly with a curtsy, her dress bobbing as she moved.
"Just call me Nellie, will you." She threw up her hands absently, her attention on a ripped seam on the front of Lucy's dress, looking back up at her with a twinge of irritation flaring up in her gut as Lucy frantically burst into another panicked flurry of words.
"How is it you act so placid and unscathed when those horrible men are sure to be listening by the door as we speak? I saw they harmed you dreadfully, what he did to you, if your monthlies are absent--"
"Don't worry about me, love. Look, I've been checkin' for days, neither the judge nor the beadle have shown their 'ideous mugs round the city. So why don't we take what time we have, and I'll clean you up all good, you and the babe." Nellie sighed, chewing on her already curled lip before eventually ambling up to the front window again to check the street.
Clear.
Lucy carefully passed Johanna over fearfully, her eyes flitting between Johanna and the window, where she ducked her head beneath the sill as she crouch-walked to the next door, following timidly behind Mrs. Lovett, who turned around incredulously with Johanna in arms, her eyebrows raised.
"Oh get up, nobody's even on the street, and I can handle it if anything goes amiss." She snapped, ushering the terrified girl over until the door was shut securely.
"Now, I have a feeling you'll try something daft, and that wouldn't be very good for you or the little bugger, so I'll have to be around all of the time, got it?" Nellie instructed as she placed the baby back into her mother's arms when she had leaned back on the edge of the little tub that called her above average sized slum home.
"Is this how the both of us will spend the rest of our days? Never going outside?" Lucy faltered, her eyes misting over as she gazed at her infant daughter, then back to her caretaker with a dismayed lilt to her hushed voice.
Sighing again, Mrs. Lovett emptied out her handmade rope basket onto the tiled floor, the garments that were in it moved aside with a flick of her ankle.
She'd ignored Lucy's question.
"I think I still 'ave a few things lying around in this place that you could use for Johanna," Nellie muttered as she hefted a pail of water to the inside of the tub, grimacing as it spilled partially.
At least this time, it ended up where it's meant to be. She thought with a huff, gesturing to the bath with one waved hand. "Now then, are you fit to lift the pails before I help clean you up?"
A nod followed Nellie's request, and exhales of relief were released as Mrs. Barker lowered herself into the tepid water, shivering as her bare skin prickled all over in response to the new situation.
"You've been so charitable towards me, friend." Lucy mused in a timid smile, her voice still quavering as Johanna splashed her tiny arms about, being held on her mother's knee firmly. "I am sorry you've had to face London alone, and though I do not relate to you currently, I feel for you with all of my soul."
Mrs. Lovett turned her face away, blissfully pretending to respect Lucy's privacy.
Should I let her know about how I feel towards Benjamin?
Who needs secrets anymore? Everything's gone to hell, anyways, and before the year is up, I bet an ass that we'll either both be in Turpin's pit or the looneybin.
"I used to hate you. I was jealous, I s'pose. Perfect hair, eyes, face, and, perfect...something else.." Nellie trailed off, now thinking about cutting her tongue out as soon as she was alone.
Lucy's face changed dramatically, still processing what she'd been told but the gist of it revealed. She had that look in her eyes where someone knew more than they were letting on, and she hoped that her bias for the barber hadn't been that obvious.
"If I am correct, I assume you are referring to how you've fawned over poor Benjamin time and time again," she spoke up, clearing her throat with the smallest of smiles tugging on her lips.
Mrs. Lovett sniffed, frowning. "Rub the salt in a bit more, why don't you? I've been a widow for almost ten stinkin' years, it'd be about time I was bedded by now."
"Had I not been pursued by Judge Turpin, I would have handed you in myself." Lucy retorted, gently prying the scrubbing brush off of its owner despite her slicing tone.
"Alright, alright. I don't want to ruffle any feathers, just dip your head under nice and quickly, I'll hold pretty little Jo."
And just like that, the small one-year old was nestled back into the crook of Nellie's elbow (with a sighed thank you from Lucy), no doubt confused as to why there was a bootleg copy of her mother glancing down with wide brown eyes instead of Lucy's blue-tinged ones, wild curls instead of long wisps.
Albert hadn't wanted a child, much less had he wanted to pleasure her in any way shape or form.
And even if it hurt to make countless trip after trip to the back door of the physicist's, Nellie liked to stroll back lazily, dreaming up names, scratching out little dresses on the road with a rusty nail, sitting on the cobbles a few streets away until she was sure he'd gone for work with his dusty brown leather suitcase.
She'd liked the idea of having a child, and the moment of Mr. Lovett's death wasn't really as joyous of an occasion as the newly-widowed Mrs. Lovett had thought it to be.
But she now owned his entire family's items and the pie shop too, so she had to thank him for something.
"Y'know, you're very lucky to have a mum who loves and values you, so don't you go causing any trouble for her, or you'll be the secret ingredient in my pies, alright?" Mrs. Lovett murmured out of earshot of the child's mother, picking her way around to her small dresser to locate a towel for Lucy, and maybe, just maybe, she could find that blanket she'd hoarded for years.
.. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..
"A-are you sure, Mrs. Lovett? Where on earth are you going to go?"
"Now, now, I just want to make sure you two are comfy, and you need an actual bed to sleep on more than I do, you're still nursing! No objections." Mrs. Lovett quipped, her robe pooling around her knees as she sat on the bed, tucking Johanna in with Lucy.
"I'm not much a singer, but 'ere goes, it's the only one I know, really." Nellie stretched, rolling over onto her back, letting her hair down from its usual high perch.
Sweet Polly Plunkett lay in the grass,
She turned 'er eyes heavenward, sighing,
As the next lyrics approached, she put on a high voice, while still staying as quiet as she possibly could, not wanting the neighbours snooping in on her again.
"I am a lass, who alas loves a lad;"
"Who alas has a lass in Canterbury," Nellie grinned a little as she rolled her tongue along the roof of her mouth, listening to Lucy applaud softly.
Soon enough, she could hear rhythmic breathing, and smiled faintly to herself.
I won't ever let your family suffer again, Mr. Barker, I swear on my life.

Schmicago OCs!!
credit to @manyfandomocs for inspiring me to finally get my shit together and to my favourite @seaweedhufflepuffocs for listening to me talk about them for months and months and months and putting up with me being annoying when schmicago stole my original mercy plot smh
1. Alyson Kelly in The Music And The Mirror – from the real world, got stuck in Schmicago as part of a deal with the narrator, shipped with Melissa & Josh
her main character inspirations are Cassie Ferguson (a chorus line) and Janet Weiss (rocky horror), as well as a lot of Pippin influence but not a specific character!
Tumblr media
2. Billy Astor in Being Alive – a businessman who shares an office space with Bobbie, former idealist now turned cynic, gambled a bit too much and got stuck in debt to Kratt, shipped with Jenny & Topher
his main character inspirations are Robert/Bobby (company), Zach (a chorus line), J Pierpont Finch (how to succeed in business without really trying), Nick Arnstein (funny girl), and Ben (follies)
Tumblr media
3. Lily May in Let Me Entertain You – Jenny's roommate and best friend, a fellow showgirl with a dark side, Bobbie got her off of a murder charge when a guest at Kratt's club started stalking her, shipped with Jenny & Topher
her main character inspirations are Roxie Hart & Velma Kelly (chicago) and Baby June & Gypsy Rose Lee/Louise (gypsy)
Tumblr media
4. Mercy Correira in City On Fire – Former member of Topher's cult and Topher's ex girlfriend, but Kratt set his eyes on her and ultimately she had to give in and agree to be his or Topher was going to get sent to the electric chair. All along he’s thought that she betrayed them all for the glitz and glam of being a showgirl, now she’s sort of the faded star used and thrown aside and jaded, shipped with the Emcee
Her main character inspirations are Lucy Barker (sweeney todd), Charity Hope Valentine (sweet charity), and Sally Durant Plummer & Phyllis Rogers Stone (follies), with influence from Johanna Barker (sweeney todd), magenta (rocky horror), Fanny Brice (funny girl), and Mary Magdalene (jesus christ superstar)
Tumblr media
5. and Ricky Skinner in Something Real – comes back as himself, missing Schmigadoon and wishing he'd never left, ship tbd but probably Jenny or Jenny & Topher

b.enjamin barker/swee.ney todd.
needless to say, johanna’s view of her biological father is a very, very poor one. as you can guess, turpin wouldn’t tell her the truth. can’t have her knowing that he ripped her family apart. in canon, what she was told about her father is that he was a brute and a thief. she does not know what he stole or anything else. since she was raised by turpin ( “pious vulture of the law” ), she doesn’t look at it in a very positive light and she doesn’t want to. she doesn’t want to consider the fact that maybe he stole to feed her family. yes she is well aware of the fact that turpin is a corrupt judge, however to think that maybe her father was innocent and he had him arrested is simply too much for her to consider. that means he took so much more from her than she initially thought.
after canon, she ever figures it out. she doesn’t know what she looked like as a baby so she can’t go off the photograph. the victorian government at the time didn’t issue birth certificates. johanna has no idea who her father is. he died in botany bay in australia. he was a bad man. the end.
however feelings get much more complicated in modern verses ( hawkins verse and modern verse ). she knows who her father is and she hates it. johanna already knows about how bad of a man turpin is. to find out that her biological father was worse than the criminal she always took him for? he’s a serial killer. he almost killed her. johanna had to watch as her own father murdered her abusive guardian. feelings about turpin’s murder is it’s own meta in itself, but she didn’t want to witness that. when the police figure out who exactly s.weeney t.odd was, she has to live with the fact that they’re both barkers. this man killed several people of varying innocence. what stands out to her is the fact that he could’ve made more of their family. more fathers going missing and their wives having to deal with the consequences. even bamford has a young daughter. what’s going to happen to her? the rest of their families?
he killed her mother. yes, he didn’t know it was her and yes, the detectives and police have ruled that. but he still did it. he still almost killed her. the only time johanna interacts with her father, he is too blinded by rage and a thirst for revenge that he doesn’t take a moment and consider that anthony was bringing her here. she didn’t know lucy at all, but she has idolized her despite thinking she was dead for her entire life. and he killed her. even if she was only told the worst about her mother and prayed every night that turpin was wrong about her, she can’t forgive her mother’s killer.
once the media picked up on such a romantically tragic tale, they began to harass her about it the moment any information leaked about johanna. she is trying to move on. she’s married. her name isn’t even the same anymore. she wants to get a job and travel and leave the past behind. her father only becomes more of a burden when people ask her about it. when people ask her about trauma she barely even discusses with anthony. sweeney is a weight she has to just lug around.
above all though, she feels betrayed and abandoned. johanna feels horribly guilty about it when she tells herself she should feel more guilty on her father’s and guardian’s behalves. she knows that her own father chose to seek his revenge, chose to kill people, over reuniting with her. perhaps, it would be impossible, yet she snuck around with anthony for all that time. she wouldn’t be against sneaking behind her guardian’s back and meeting with her biological father, even if it would take some time for her to accept that. johanna is already incredibly emotionally vulnerable. knowing her own father chose something as horrible as he chose over her, crushes her. did he ever love her?
if benjamin/sweeney had lived, i can’t say she would make any attempt to form a relationship with him. johanna never wanted a father. turpin was supposed to fill that role in her life and look at where it got her. she wanted a mother, yes. there wasn’t really anyone who could be that figure in her life. yet the universe gave her a father and she’s nothing but ashamed of him.

modern verse.
warnings for eds, rape, pedophilia, mental illness, murder, death, suicide, etc. you know the drill. it’s s.weeney t.odd guys.
johanna was born on february 20th to lucy and b.enjamin barker. there's not a hint of anything from that life that she knows about: not baby feet stamped in ink into the back of a scrapbook, no lock of hair from her first haircut, no list of words she knew how to say. it's as if that year never happened.
if one were to ask turpin what happened during the first year johanna was alive, he would say that he was a close from of lucy's and was devastated to find her family in the state that it was in. he was the one forced to sentence her husband to prison for the drugs in their apartment ( he won't mention he was behind them being planted in there ), he would share his anguish at attempting to comfort lucy as she sobbed ( being the one she was sobbing about ), he was the found that found lucy with the empty bottle of pills next to her.
he was the one who graciously opened his arms for johanna. to raise her as his own.
johanna was sent to private schools during most of her childhood. the world she knew of was school, the house, the local public library. if she had a friend, she wasn't allowed to go to their house.
she spent a good chunk of her childhood going to the library after school to escape her room. turpin did his best to control what she read, but if he ever told her that she wasn't allowed to read a certain title, johanna was at the library the next day to finish it in one sitting.
due to the fact that she was a good student and was well-behaved, no one ever wondered if there was anything more going on with her.
at nine years old, she realized that she was not pretty. there were too many things about her keeping her from being the beautiful woman she wanted to become.
when she was twelve, she started skipping meals.
a month went by before the housekeeper caught her. turpin didn't seem to care at first before the housekeeper told him that this would lead to her death. after that, johanna was watched even more than she used to be.
a scandal shut down the private school she was at. something to do with transcripts, turpin told her. johanna heard other things. the school year was starting soon and turpin was forced to enroll her in the public high school. it was supposed to be temporary, until he found a new school.
anthony h.ope was kind to everyone. his father was apart of the military and they were recent arrivals to london. apparently, he saved the life of a man. everyone adored anthony.
the fact that anthony talked to her was a shock to johanna's system. she was used to being left alone. the fact that someone showed genuine interest and volunteered to partner up with her blew her mind.
he met up with her at the library. he walked around the park with her. she snuck out more and more to be with him.
johanna didn't realize they were dating until anthony asked if he could kiss her. she realized she was in love with him then, too.
anthony unlocked more secrets from her than she realized she had. he caught onto the abuse in her household before she did.
she had just finished her homework when the judge came in, asking to talk to her. he sat johanna down at the edge of her bed. he bent down on one, creaking knee and looked up at her.
her guardian wanted to marry her.
he told her his plan. once she was eighteen he would make his case to court. despite having adopted her, they had fallen in love and wanted to be married. they already had a close friend of his to step in and allow them. they would be married. johanna could study nursing. they would have a happy life together until death did them part.
once she got ahold of herself, she told him that it was a very big decision and she would need to think about it.
after telling anthony, she made him promise that he wouldn't tell anyone else. he told her that he would like to marry her. johanna could go to school for whatever she wanted. anthony would find them a place to stay.
somehow turpin found out about their plans.
johanna went sent to fogg’s mental institution.
several of his cases involved the institution. he was good friends with jonas foggs.
her official diagnosis included: anxiety, panic disorder, depression, suicidal intention, anorexia nervosa, body dysmorphic disorder, and insomnia.
( the mental illnesses and disorders she does suffer from are: anxiety, ptsd, body dysmorphic disorder, insomnia, anorexia nervosa, and survival's guilt. )
the other patients ranged from dangerous to completely fine. they were nothing compared to dr. fogg. interacting with him felt like she hadn't left turpin's house at all.
she was there for months.
but anthony found her and signed the necessary documents to release her.
johanna saw the gun he had on him before anyone else did. when dr. fogg, the owner of the hospital, caught on that he was either her legal guardian nor her spouse and went after johanna. anthony’s hand went to the weapon he had on him but couldn’t bring himself to fire it, johanna took it from him.
she didn’t know whether she killed fogg or not. it didn’t matter to her.
they ran.
anthony found her one of his sweatshirts to wear, to cover everything up.
he told her that she would be safe waiting at mr. todd’s barbershop ( the man whose life he'd saved ). upon arriving, they couldn’t find mr. todd or his neighbor who owned the bakery downstairs. anthony assured her that she would be safe and went to find a way for them to get out of london.
the rest of the night happens much like as in canon. lucy is murdered. johanna witnesses. turpin is murdered. johanna witnesses. she tries to escape. todd nearly kills her before he's distracted and she has the chance to run.
a few days later, they were instructed to come down to the police station. johanna was told that they found the identities of todd and the beggar woman: they were her biological parents.
she was given their few belongings when all she wanted was to forget.
johanna enrolls in university with anthony.
the true crime community finds out about the todd trial. they begin swarming johanna for information, especially since she was there. all she wants is to forget about that life when no one is allowing her to. she didn't know them.
they move to plymouth and continue their studies. they marry shortly after canon.
johanna uses a good amount of the money she inherited from turpin on charities to help victims of csa ( like she was ) and on her education. some of it goes to their little wedding. she never claimed not to be spiteful.
she and anthony travel the world together, like they said that they would do, but johanna fears the rest of her life she'll be trying to forget about a past that she keeps getting reminded of.

history.
born on the outskirts of london, he was raised in a primarily happy family. he was close to his brothers and good to his parents. however, his younger brother, johnny, always seemed a little off. his family didn't know what to do about it and since they were struggling to get by, they didn't really acknowledge it.
warnings for suicide: when benjamin was sixteen, he was the one to discover his brother after he committed suicide. they didn't have a funeral for him since suicide was illegal and they didn't want his name to be ruined. benjamin burned the suicide note himself. yet it angered him. why should his brother's name be remembered by the way he died? his parents refused to hear him. his brother warned him to keep quiet.
a few years later, he was ready to continue his father's trade and set up his own shop in london. he moved to fleet street and became fast friends with the landlady, mrs. lovett. he was blind towards her affections towards him.
his new friends were quick to bring him to every dance, teasing him about marrying him off. however, it was at one of these dances that he met the most wonderful women he could imagine. lucy averley had snuck to this dance, her parents warned her about marrying someone who could provide for her. she was slightly better-off than the rest of them. that didn't stop benjamin. the two quickly fell in love and into a brief courtship. he proposed a few weeks later.
benjamin was nearly blind to the tensions raising between his wife-to-be and mrs. lovett. he learned that they were friends in their youth, but not any more than that.
lucy wanted babies and a house in the countryside. benjamin would give her the moon on a silver string.
they spent the first year of their marriage trying for their first baby. they were unsuccessful. again and again, they tried only to be unsuccessful again and again.
finally, they discovered they were finally having the child they dreamed of. benjamin got to work on crafting a cradle with the help of his father, or more so he helped here and there as his father constructed the cradle. he was not as good at such craftsmanship.
the baby came before he had finished painting the cradle. johanna was born in the wee hours of the morning in feburary and she looked just like his wife.
he closed the shop for a few days to finish the cradle and spend time together as a family. this was unheard of for benjamin, but his family could easily sway him.
one night when benjamin returned home from the market, he found a young boy sitting in his shop. lucy explained that his name was daniel o'higgins and being an orphan from ireland wasn't able to find any work. she begged him to find something for the boy to do. benjamin had him sweep up hair for him. he worked for benjamin for a few weeks until the turpin affair.
after a year of pure bliss, it all went wrong.
judge turpin had been pinning after lucy for many years. they were closer than ever after lucy moved. she assured benjamin there was nothing to be afraid of. he believed her. naively.
he was shipped off to botany bay at the judge's orders, leaving his wife and daughter behind
benjamin hoped at the beginning. he kept track of the days. he did everything he could with what little power he had to get out. no one listened.
he became talented at craftsmanship. he could build entire sets of furniture. he was used as a barber for the prisoners and the officers on the island. no matter what, it didn't gain him any favors.
at night, he imagined his wife and daughter. how much his daughter would look like his lucy. how johanna was growing older. did she like to dance, too? lucy teaches her, doesn't she?
after fifteen years of sweating away on a false charge, benjamin found out about a prisoner's revolt. he quickly ask how he could help. he acted as a spy, volunteering his pampering services to overhear secrets.
finally, on the day of johanna's birthday, the revolt took place. benjamin was able to escape onto a raft with a fellow prisoner, samuel sweeney. he grew attached to the boy. however, samuel would perish a week into the journey. benjamin had to toss his corpse overboard.
on the brink of death, anthony hope, on the good ship bountiful spotted him in the water. he passed out shortly after making it on board. he woke up in anthony's bed and a fellow sailor called him down. it turned out he had been passed out for two days and they were beginning to believe he would die.
he grew close to anthony while on board. their journey took them seven months back to london. however, he still kept anthony at an arm's distance after what happened with samuel.
he didn't want to admit to himself it was too far-gone. he loved anthony like he was his own son.
after returning to london, he soon found out from mrs. lovett that lucy had poisoned herself and johanna was adopted by turpin.
losing his family was the last straw. he would get his revenge.
the name sweeney todd comes from two places. first, the boy on the raft with him. todd comes from his late brother's middle name.
benjamin loved his family more than anything in this life. he wasn't able to protect his brother from his inner-demons. he wasn't able to protect his wife and daughter. there was always a layer of anger brewing inside. todd brought that out.
todd abandoned his family. he loved the thrill of revenge more than he loved his daughter.

HISTORY.
— LAURA DOES NOT REMEMBER HER FATHER AT ALL. he is her mother’s memory. she was a baby when he passed. she only members it being her and her mother against everything. johanna did everything to ensure a comfortable growing-up for her daughter. the last thing she wanted was for her own child to go through what she had to. as a child, laura had a big heart. she loved ever living thing. every bug, every animal, every person that would let her love them. she began sewing at a young age, inspired by her mother’s occupation as a seamstress. laura grew to be quite the little dressmaker, having put together several of her own, among other crafts. though, like her mother, laura has a deep longing to see the world outside of plymouth.

NAME:  Lucy Barker SPECIES: human ORIENTATION: heterosexual GENDER: female BIRTH DATE:  June 4th, 1814
APPEARANCE
Yellow gold curls and pearl white teeth, her porcelain skin was her dowry. now though, her hair is matted beyond the saving grace of a comb, mud colored and full of bugs. Her teeth have yellowed too, though she has yet to lose them. she looks as snapped as she feels, a shadow of her former self.
face claim:  Alice Isaaz
RELATIONSHIPS
FAMILY:  N/A
SIGNIFICANT OTHER:   Benjamin Barker ( Husband / alive)
CHILDREN:   Johanna ( daughter / alive)
PERSONALITY
.She used to be sweet and full of laughter, gentle, and perhaps a bit naive. Now she is worn down, snapped in half by the perils of living. she isn't all there, she isn't what she used to be.
NEED TO KNOWS
Lucy is mentally unwell. She isn't completely present, but she has moments of lucidness. This is projected as madness during the events of the show in 1846, but tis really just some bad PTSD and other trauma.
While Mrs Lovett describes Lucy's fate, she is an unreliable narrator, so much of Lucy's strife is not as neatly outlined as Mrs. Lovett makes it out to be. Lucy's husband was sent to prison, she was being harassed and eventually raped by Judge Turpin, and drank arsenic to kill herself to escape him. Lucy, instead of being sent to bedlam, she was briefly seen by a doctor/sent to a hospital at the Judge's behest, then sent to prison for the standard six month sentence, but only avoided the mandatory hanging that followed the sentence by the Judge's influence. she was placed in the workhouse to pay off the hospital debts. during this time, she loses Johanna by court order, and the Judge makes her his ward. further headcanons to follow regarding this time period.
Lucy's complete path for begging/prostituting goes from the docks, to Fleet Street to Kearney's Lance totaling a five mile walk one way with at least a mile between Fleet Street and Kearney's Lane. She does talk to Johanna, though she doesn't know that that's her daughter. She often asks about ' the baby'.
Lucy has a rag doll that she refers to as her own baby, she also has a bag full of broken or thrown out toys, such as stuffed animals from the trash and small broken doll heads from mudlarking in the river. She's saving them all for when her 'baby' is old enough to enjoy them. the ragdoll is a comfort an she treats it like a real human being. Lucy sings many lullabies and nursery rhymes while walking her route and begging/prostituting. the baby gets turned away or laid face down so it doesn't have to see her 'work'.
Lucy has had her head shaved twice( once in hospital and once in prison) and now is very protective while simultaneously being neglectful of her hair as well as her body. she doesn't have access to a bath or a brush, but she does touch her matted hair often, just to make sure its still there.
Lucy is heavily affiliated with @cannotfly

UNLESS MRS LOVETT POISONED HER
I have to consider this possibility. What are the things we know about Mrs. Lovett and Lucy:
Lovett is suspiciously unfazed by murder
Lovett is a liar - why do we believe her about this if she lied about Lucy even being alive?
Lovett tried to murder the beadle with poison in the deleted scene from the original script
Lovett really hated and despised Lucy - treated her quite cruelly even after she had sunk as low as she could possibly go
It seems less likely Lucy would poison herself when she was responsible for a baby - yes it's possible, but it would be a strong motivator for her not to
Lovett was the landlady and Lucy would have probably lost her livelihood, and thus have become a burden on her
I don't necessarily think this is true and I don't think Annaleigh Ashford's interpretation seems like she would have done it. But it does seem like a possible action from an evil-er interpretation of Mrs. Lovett
On the other hand: Johanna does immediately think of poisoning herself when Judge Turpin wants to marry her. In that case, it seems poisoning yourself because of Judge Turpin is actually a time-honored tradition in the Barker family.
Overall, Lucy probably poisoned herself I guess. But just something to consider.
i love lucy barker but i do need to call her out for two crimes
child endangerment (killing herself and leaving johanna with mrs lovett)
street harassing innocent sailors

members of the extended barker family. cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. people who knew the barkers before everything blew up on them. people who are impacted by their loss more than johanna is because they knew lucy and benjamin before lucy became a shell of her former self and benjamin turned serial killer. people reaching out to johanna in an attempt to get to know the member of their family who was a baby before she disappeared from their life only for her to quietly turn down every invitation to family gatherings. people that johanna is afraid to reach out to because what if they're like them? the family that she knows she has somewhere out there, but she's absolutely terrified of meeting.
