You met Leah when she attended an awards show two years ago. You’d sat at the same table and got to talking. She asked for your number and the two of you would be texting and calling all the time.

Eventually, she asked you on a date, taking you to dinner at a secluded section in the restaurant. That night was a night that you could never forget. She let you talk about your career and passions while you did the same for her.

You were from two different worlds, being well known in your own ways, but understand each other, for the most part.

Two years in, and your relationship still strong. You did have some arguments here and there, that’s normal, but what you learned over the years was how jealous she could get. It was amazing to have someone love you so much that they don’t want anyone coming in between that, but sometimes her jealousy becomes too much, like today.

You invited her and some of her friends to a night out with some of your friends. Your two worlds colliding once more.

Being in a relationship with you, she knew how many people ‘desired’ you. You’ve been a public figure since you were a teen. You’ve had costars who’ve tried to date you, others who openly flirt with you and always reassure Leah that she’s the only one you want. She knows that. Doesn’t mean she has to like the way men and women throw themselves at you.

Today was another one of those days, except this time her jealousy seemed to have amplified. Your friends traveled all the way to London to visit you, Leah inviting some of her Arsenal teammates, meeting at a little karaoke club.

Leah squirms in her seat, not liking how you and your friend are touchy, steam practically blowing out of her ears. Her friends start to tease her, jealousy easily seen in her face.

As the songs finishes, Leah is quick off her seat, rushing towards you. She grabs your wrist, pulling you towards what you assume the restroom. You turn your head towards your friends and Leah’s teammates, giving them a wink.

Shutting the bathroom door, she pushes you against it, leaning down so you’re face to face.

“What was that?”

“What was what?” You ask innocently.

“That’s little show you did there?”

“Oh, that.” You extend the ‘a’. “That’s just a little something me and Alex love to perform.”

“Was all the touching really necessary?”

“Yes.”

She looked at you shocked. “What d’you mean ‘yes.’”

“The only way I thought to get your attention after ignoring me all night.”

“People were all over you!”

“And what did the song say? Something like ‘Take me baby or leave me.’”

You give her a quick, but passionate kiss, pushing her away. Making sure to fix yourself it the mirror, you give her a wink, leaving a stunned Leah in the restroom.

Hiding Something

Topper walked into the low-light of your bedroom from the attached bathroom, shirtless and hair still damp from his shower.  He looked delicious (and he knew it),  but he was surprised when you didn’t roll over to look at him.  You were on your side with your head resting on your hand, probably on your phone.  

He crept up behind you slowly, and you still didn’t notice that he had gotten out of the shower, too engrossed in what you were looking at.  When he got close enough, he pounced.

You startled as his body crashed upon yours, and you threw what you had in your hands away, hoping the bedspread would hide it.  Topper didn’t miss your move though, and he quickly shifted from nuzzling your neck lovingly to batting your hands away from the flung object.  “What do we have here, Mrs. Thornton?  What could you be hiding, hmm?”

You continued to beat his hands away, growing desperate.  “It’s my vibrator!” you cried in a last ditch effort for him to stop searching.

It did make him momentarily stop but instead of retreating, he laughed in your face.  “Baby, that lie isn’t going to work on me.  I know if you wanted, you would have just joined me in the shower; it wouldn’t have been the first time,” he smirked as he said it.  You pouted, conceding the fight as he practically had you pinned - both with his logic and his body.

He kept his eyes on you as his hand finally found what you had been hiding.  His smirk grew impossibly wider.  “Let’s see what you were trying so hard to keep from me.”  He brought the object into his line of vision slowly, and his smirk fell, a storm cloud growing on his face instead.  

“Uh-uh, no more reading before bed.  You keep waking me up with your dramatic gasps every time you turn the page,” he said sternly.  He held the romance novel like it was going to burn him.  

Your face transformed into one of pure innocence.  “Well, I'm sorry that I engage and connect deeply with literature!” you said, surprisingly not breaking character.  

Topper just rolled his eyes and got off of you.  He very purposely placed the book on his nightstand.  He settled down into the blankets.  “I thought you vowed to obey me?” he joked, still acting like he was upset.

You planted a sloppy kiss on his cheek and turned out the lamp you had been using to read.  “We wrote our own vows, husband,” you crowed.

“Oh, shut it, smarty pants,” he groaned but still pulled you close and into his embrace before falling asleep.

I think that only means you're as delusional as the rest of us, baby. We are all proud of it, so embrace it with us. We love you. 

On a serious note (if there can even be a serious note to this), I think people with a vivid, colorful imagination find it hard to hold on to the fact that their favorite fictional character is not real sometimes because in their mind, everything is so real (I know it, trust me, I write so I live through my stories and my characters). Especially if the characters you have in mind look real (meaning, it's not a cartoon, manga, or anime—it may be CGI but so fucking human-looking). No one can blame us for believing our favorite characters exist because they are so real with their personalities and appearances it's hard to tell yourself at the end of the day they are just pixels. Like, we all know it, but it's fun to make yourself believe that they are not. I mean, where's fun in being so uptight and not letting go to try to love and appreciate your favorite character as a human being?

It's fun and harmless because, despite everything, you still know that these people don't live among us (so sad to even type that). So don't worry. No one's cheating, no matter what you imagine with your characters. It's the same as if you had a dream about someone real and you cheated on your girlfriend in that dream and felt bad—would it be real? No. Because it was a dream, and although your subconscious did that, you would never do it in reality if you cared about your girlfriend that much.

To me it reads as a term of endearment for a child, first and only language is American English. How do you feel about that term? Is English your first language? What's your favorite term of endearment for Bilbo or do you not like any?

English is my first language, and on a personal level "Little One" is not my yum. That said, I know size difference is a big (pun intended) thing for some people. Folks like to use little one to emphasize that, and if that's their kink more power to them. A good writer can make it work, especially if they're the one who is into it. But yeah, Little One sounds like something my patriarchal grandfather would pat me on the head and say when I was small. Not sexy to me on its own.

My favorite term of endearment for Bilbo is Burglar. It's a title he earns, a nickname he's proud of, and an admission that Thorin was wrong. The term means something to them as a couple, so I find it romantic, despite the fact that it's hardly Honeybear or whatever for cuteness.

Frankly, Bilbo is on the page as not liking cutesy terms. Beorn calls him a little bunny and babies him and Bilbo is like "guess I have to tolerate this infantilization so we don't all starve in Mirkwood." But of course terms of endearment hit differently from a weird hermit than they might from an actual romantic partner. Maybe Bilbo would be super down with a lover calling him Bun-Bun. A good writer could probably sell me on it.

All that aside, I am also a sucker for my Tolkien con-langs. Give me amrâlimê and ghivashel as pet names for Bilbo any day. <3
