A gasp could be heard as she dropped the plate at her father’s rare outburst spilling the delicious pancake tower that the man loving crafted early that morning just the way he knew Nora and the boys liked it.. residing all over the floors with nothing but a wet ‘splotch’.. she has seen him be stern like when she convinced Stevie to go camping with her in the middle of the night or when she scrapped her knee and wailed for her daddy to come and he came rushing in… she’s seen him crumble behind closed doors about their dead mother when he thinks they’re all asleep.. but she’s always by the door listening and hoping he knows that she’s here to pick him up the way he would after each of her swimming matches.. after a long stressful day of school- it was always just her and her Dad.. so to see him so.. freaked out and the tips of his ears gaining the same flustered pink as his face.. Nora found herself reaching out to try and reassure her that she’s still here.. she’s his daughter- just more independent now, she can handle this right?
“Dad, I love you… with all my heart but I can’t be in Beach City my entire life with the same people that know this mangled earlier version of me and I-I.. I need you to let me go… it’s what Mom would’ve wanted, for me to explore as she did and I need you to understand that I am still your daughter miles and miles away from you…and I am sorry that you don’t see that but ill keep telling you til you’re hit with the realization that I am here for you too, Paps.” Azuli, on the other hand seemed to be concealing an all knowing smug smirk under the guise of passive- blind to Nora’s navy tinted glasses but not to her own no bullshit detector father.
The leather clad woman found herself heading to the door, hands stuffed in her pockets- “Look. Nor’ you’re a sweet girl.. clearly you should be spending the day with your old man instead..clearly he needs it.” Her tone was dismissive and irritated at the fact that their plans got sidetracked by one emotional setback.. whatever, at least his Sultan had sweet parts being put to use on someone other than this massive sorry excuse that’s exists to bring her Northstar down.
“No! No! Okay, we can fix this.. I just…” She needed to be her own father right now and spin the positives out of the extreme negatives of this tense suffocating situation- “Kids leave the nest all the time and it’s perfectly natural for them to explore parts of themselves that they never could’ve possibly imagined they had in them… yet you know that so…” Nora felt as if the last piece of this entire ‘puzzle’ finally slot into place.. she adjusted her posture and crossed her arms- “Dad… she’s really sweet- I promise, you can trust her with me.. oh! I know you can come along with us to the newest gallery opening- I know you love art and Azu makes morphs… why don’t you tag along?”
To say the older woman was growing aggravated and the entire charade with Nora and her father felt like excessive coddling.. in Azuli’s family household, this many words wouldn’t fly at the table so to see them so openly wailing… it was really harshing the vibes that were promised last night.. they were planning this for the past three months, why would that girl jeopardize it for sake of some sentimental old lunatic thats way out of his bridges- it was repulsive.

The doting father was happily cooking up blueberry pancakes for his three kids. His long locks tied back by a sparkly scrunchie that looked like it was made from the cosmos itself. He hummed out a tune as he served up three plates of blueberry pancakes, one for each of his kids, while he had the reject/sacrifice pile of pancakes deemed not perfect enough for his children.
The father heard the revving of a motorcycle and saw the irritated calico cats coming down the stairs. A slight grimace on formed on the 5 o'clock shadow on the mans face, his eyes hidden in the shadow of his bangs as he moves to cut up fresh fruit. It seemed inconsiderate for someone to be revving a motorcycle at 6am. But his mood seemed to brighten seeing his daughter come down the stairs from her room. "Good morning, Princess." He said with a warm smile setting out the warm steaming tower of pancakes. "I made blueberry pancakes... come and get them while they are nice and hot, syrups on the side, whip creams in the fridge, if you want ice cream I think we have a couple scoops of vanilla left."
Stephen was working on a whole slew of assignments ranging from math to science, to art to music, to after school activities he was trying to schedule his life around. He mumbled something along the lines of needing 5 more minutes to finish what he was doing before feeling the unseen gaze of their father before he let out a soft groan. "I know... what you're about to say." "Working hard is important, but feeling good is important to, so settle down with the work and enjoy time with your family." The both of them said in unison, before Stephen shoved a large pancake into his mouth, muffling the words "happy now?" He chuckled and ruffled his sons hair before looking over toward Stevie, and the mysterious person at the door. The man's parental instincts rang out as this leather jacket wearing woman just spelled trouble the moment she stepped a foot into the door with her
Stevie was in a whirlwind of emotions. He didn't like lying to their dad, but he made a promise to his sister to keep her out of trouble. He heard his father's tone and maybe he didn't notice that Nora's nighttime friend was over, but in his panic, he didn't think to tell her to go away and come back later, he blurted out. "Nope. Never met anyone named Nora... there's no Nora's around here.... nope, not here, she's been dead for 5 years... goodbye." He replied before getting startled by the smooch on the cheek, and before he could ask anything, suddenly there father was behind Stevie.
"Excuse me... where do you think you're going Mrs. Demayo." He replied gently holding her shoulder then turning her to face him. His eyes still hidden in the shadows. Nora, who is this?" His tone caried the cadence of an understandably worried father, wondering what his sweet daughter was doing with someone who screamed every father's worst nightmare.

Nemili

Nemili is the elder sister. She is a bit like her parents: she likes knowledge (especially history and magic) and books, but she diverges from them with her calmness, empathy and desire not to fight. She dislikes battles and war, and will only fight if she *really* has to (to save the ones she cares about). She would rather discuss and negotiate first. While she is skilled with magic, she prefers to use it to protect her allies than to create attacks. With her magic, she can create weapons and shields. She also knows many magic tricks Magolor taught her.
Meedo

Meedo is the middle brother. He resembles his dads in the sense that he is a fighter: while he is not actually aggressive, he won’t miss an opportunity to fight, either for training or to try to help or save someone. He is a gamer: it’s his main hobby after sports. While he cannot fly nor float, he is strong and agile enough it doesn’t stop this him from being an adventurer. Ever since he can think by himself, he has dreamed to be a knight, and so with his father, he is slowly training to be one. He could use magic if he wanted to but for now, he prefers to fight physically.

Stellphi is the youngest sibling. They are still a child and they don’t talk a lot, much more introverted than their siblings. They are very creative and playful, getting Meta Knight’s sense of strategy and Magolor’s taste for pranks. They dislike to fight, but love to feel useful, so they use their magic to heal and help instead (as well as some tricks here and there, of course). They also seem to have a strong character (their parents’ ego had to be given to at least one of them after all 😆).
That’s all I got for now! Of course I will give them a more detailed backstory one day, but for now I really can’t write much more. Feel free to draw them if you want! The boundaries: don’t ship them with anyone, don’t make obscene/adult/distasteful/offensive/political content involving them, don’t "gijinka" them, don’t change their age and don’t alter their designs too much (changing their clothing is okay). Please use the tags I’ve added to this post if you want to draw them (and @ me!!! I wanna see!!)! 💖

I made this moodboard yesterday about my steambaby,Azusa! I mentioned that she's more close to Zuko and loves spending time with him because she's a daddy's girl! 💛🌻💛🌻💛🌻 • When Zuko isn't too busy, he'll take the kids out or have a one on one day with them. With Azusa; Zuko knows how much she loves painting and will take her to galleries or art museums. They will go to the theater since they both love plays. Sometimes they'll go backstage afterwards to talk to the cast and Azusa will ask the director for screenwriting advice. • Azusa's favorite dessert is lemon cake with yellow rose frosting and a cup of chamomile tea. Sometimes Zuko would bring her a slice of cake with the plate warmed by his bending(she loves it when the cake is warmed) and said cup of tea. • She mostly calls Zuko,'Daddy'. She'll only call him 'Dad' or even 'Father' if she's mad at him.
• On her 9th birthday: Azusa gasped when she unwrapped Zuko’s present.
He remembered that monarch butterflies are her favorite and brought her a glass display of them to hang on her bedroom wall. Azusa squealed,"Oh. My.Spirits! Thank you,Daddy! It's beautiful!" Zuko smiled at her, "You're welcome ,sweetheart." She carefully put the present aside to hug him tightly. • Zuko loves gardening so Azusa gave him a yellow apron that says,'Love Grows Here' with blue hydrangeas around it. • When she was 5 or 6, she was helping Zuko water his plants when she told him, "Sunflowers are really pretty! It would make your garden even prettier,Daddy!" "You think so, Azu?" "Yeah! They're my favorite!" The next day he got new seeds and was planting them when she asked,"Ooooh! What kind are they?" "Oh,nothing special. Just corn." Azusa frowned."Corn?" "Yes." "Why corn?" "Why not? Corn is good." "I guess so...!" She shrugged,pouring water on them from her little watering can. Weeks later as the flower began to grow and the bud slowly opened, he took Azusa outside to water it. “Hey,wait a minute...", Azusa rubbed her chin as she stared at the buds. She gasped at the realization. “Those aren't corn! It's sunflowers!"She exclaimed,tugging on his pants legs and pointing at the flowers. Zuko smiled widely at her excitement. "Do you like them, Azu?"
Her eyes widened at her with her mouth agape. "Like it...? Like it?I don't like it...I love it!" She said then squealed. "Oh my Spirits! Thank you,Daddy! I love them so much and they're so pretty and the best and-and-!" Azusa put the back of her hand on her forehead. "This is too surprising to bare...!" She pretended to faint and Zuko caught her. "You're very welcome, Honey."He chuckled. When the flowers fully bloomed she loved going outside to sit and look at them.
• Whenever Zuko gave her a gift, lil Azusa would make a drawing for him as an extra thank you.
• Zuko was on the floor with Azusa while she painted his nails pink. "Daddy ,you should wear more colors than red and gold." "But I love red and gold. They’re the Fire Nation’s colors." "But you need to explore more color options! That's why I wear yellow. It's my favorite color and pretty!" "I know. You're very pretty,Sweetheart." Azusa beamed. "Thanks,Daddy!" Zuko smiled softly at her."You're welcome,Honey." "Anyways,Daddy,I just haaaave to tell you about what Grandpa Iroh and Mom were talking about! We were at Grandpa's Iroh house and he and Mom were talking. They didn't think I was listening but I was." Zuko quirked his eyebrow, "Oh really?" "Yeah! But don't tell them!" "Okay...what did they say?" "I was playing tea party with my dolls and they were talking about someone that was in his tea shop earlier. Mom said: 'That guy was kind of a jerk.' Then Grandpa said:'Oh,Shufen? He runs the second most popular tea shop in Ba Sing Se.
He likes to come in my shop and compare his to mine just to brag about his. He's always such a asshole-!' " "Azusa! You don't have to repeat the curse words." He scolded lightly. Azusa grimaced,"Oops! Sorry!" "It's alright,Azu. Just remember next time,okay?" Azusa smiled at him."Okay!"She assured while nodding.
"So...what else did they say?" "Oh my Spirits,Daddy. There was soooo much drama!" Zuko simply smiled as his daughter gossip about what his Uncle and wife said about Shufen.

And we're 30 seconds in and I just got hit by the realization Azu isn't going to see the sky for a week. I know its not under water in enemy territory but that also means she doesn't have a mission to distract her. I love Cel! Zolf tries to do a leadership and prep them for what to expect (since they don't need the element of surprise this time) so Cel changes form because rats are more easily entertained. Alex has to come in with the restrictions but still a nice way to remind Zolf this is not the nice neat chain of command he remembers. Yeah reverting is better than "ha ha you're now a rat all week". OctoCel! Nice! Zolf is declaring Family Game Night. Speaking of leadership, Hamid remembers this isn't season 1 and thanks Zolf instead of asking the reasonable but not productive questions of where this was last time. Alex points out the space issue again. Still not sure if he did this on purpose as a way to poke at the party and see how they react or if he just didn't design the space big enough last time and refuses to retcon an extra cell into the basement. TBF if there had been 2 cells last time, Hamid & Azu sharing wouldn't have made sense and if they couldn't hug the fandom might have never forgiven Zolf & Wilde. Oh Cel can change 4 times a day Zone of Truth or Dare Not sure if he is joking or not but Zolf getting out of conversation by melting into a wall is an image Thanks Lyd! Hamid "is fine and he can snuggle up with Azu". Thanks Bryn! Barnes makes Carter switch  so he can get some sleep Hamid is such a good person. He isn't trying to charm or justify, it isn't about abstract team cohesion. He just gives a sincere apology for not following the rules because even if he doesn't understand, he does trust that Zolf wouldn't hold him to them without reason. Zolf is great too, and tells Hamid it isn't needed Zolf has grown so GD much! He just cited his leaving and prompted Hamid to ask any questions. Oh I want everything on those 18 months but maybe Hamid shouldn't press when its so hard for him, especially when he can't leave the room if things get rough? I am so conflicted. Thats my little leader, immediately switches the focus to working together again. Ow "honestly we were never that good at working together anyway" so no rosy glasses on Zolf. Helen's gasp is, as ever, a mood Zolf still has that negative charisma. I can't explain how much I like that his mental health kick didn't turn him into a different person. Him tripping over his tongue on things like this is part of why he isn't a Zolf in name only, like I feared when I found out we were getting him back after his breakdown. Aw Azu & Cel offer them the illusion of privacy as Hamid  pretends he isn't hurt. I love Cel's hammock and their shipping. Pausing before it can be jossed, don't think he can duck this time. Called it. Okay but he did admit he cares about Wilde just not romantically and canon doesn't have to see eye to eye with fic. Carter tried to date Wilde? Or at least pursued him? God bless Hamid is cutting straight to the rank issue. Look I know I have a proper thing about rank and that respecting Hamid's growth means not treating him like season 1, but people need to know who is calling the shots in time sensitive, dangerous situations. The proper response to the suggestion they fight it out is not to point out logistical barriers Zolf points out that if Hamid actually fought they would all die which is a heck of a double edged statement. It respects his power while pointing out the collateral damage. Then he points out he would win in a no magic fight which is true but if Hamid doesn't already have a complex about his self worth & magic I'd be amazed. Azu tries to declare they aren't doing this while Hamid comes in with the lore. Because Bryn loves the listeners and wants us to be happy. Ooh if the claws aren't magic magic what about the rest? not that I want him to get pissed enough to breathe fire or whatever it was that got him scaley but at least he can't isn't relying on his wits if they encounter one of these fields in the field. Is Carter being Carter or is he stealing Wilde's bit of uniting the party in hating him? The irony that explaining why Zolf should lead is the single best proof of Hamid's leadership skills is not lost on me. A real leader puts the good of the party above any desire for rank or power. Not sure if this counts as yelling should probably mark as starting around 10 minutes in for CWs Ok I don't know why I am so pleased and surprised at these two having a direct conversation with past incidents as examples using clear language like "I was frustrated". I mean lord knows RQ told toxic masculinity to take a hike from the beginning so maybe its less surprised than grateful? They don't agree but are clearly more concerned with understanding than with getting in a pissing match. "...And I guess I'm not that old because I haven't lived through the 18 months" Look at him learning to stand up for himself while still being fair to the other side. How can you not love him? Bless, Hamid is worse than me, if I talk quick enough the right words will come out before I run out of courage right? I love the peanut gallery. Oh dear that's a tone on Zolf I'm just going to take a moment before the "but" comes in. Zolf is being fair, I don't necessarily agree but he is being fair and sounds willing to listen. Hamid spells it out in small words that the flippant tone is a coping mechanism. Zolf wants to move on to the rest of the party now that they've said what needed to be said to each other. Yeah sorry Carter, Hamid isn't going to let Zolf get lost in his own head any more than Zolf is going to let Hamid run into danger because if he thought about it he would freeze. And Carter & Barnes are sharing all the tricks. Guess Hamid isn't the only one who does better if he can merc a guy after a hard week They are having a direct conversation about Zolf leaving! Backstory! So it was a debt more than a calling Brynterval, useful I needed a laugh break too and this way I don't miss anything. They are keeping up the relationship metaphor for all its worth. It really does work though. Azu quit alluding and tell us your story. Aw he's retelling Dover! I ever tell you guys that's when I quit waiting for him and or RQ to show their bad side? The damn romance novels were like a promise they weren't going to betray the story over "what's expected". I was so braced for that stupid "pick a fight with the toughest guy in the yard to buy respect" trope. Instead they just said nope: no prison fights, no guard abuse, his biggest danger is developing an addiction to cheap books. Thank you Cel! Hamid mentioning Mr Ceiling reminds Zolf that still have Shoin's brorb. Oh the diary Zolf has more Campbells Cel is awesome and asks if Hamid want to talk about Aziza Liliana finally got mentioned, realizing Hamid was the last to know about that part of the story hurt So they might be a hivemind Carter has a nice little cache in the cell of daggers & a wide variety of booze. Carter suggests they should get so drunk their minds aren't worth hiving. Oh Cel & the Elvish mead Carter is drinking the Orcish whiskey to make a point Yeah, yeah, how the heck Hamid came through not only his life preseries but this adventure with a healthy relationship with alcohol is beyond me. Not a patch on his experience and I'm teetotal. That's arguably why it's important to have though (plus if they went anywhere with an alcoholism plot I probably won't be able to listen) Barnes has the rum and is Jeff Goldblum posing. I love one(1) low charisma man. Zolf is trying to draw Azu & Cel into conversation. Azu backstory time! A vision of Aphrodite in her dream led her to follow a wandering paladin. Little leader tucks Carter in Azu asks for Cel backstory Cel is around 97, and they were raised in America. Their Dad was a merchant sailor. The trade cut off and defenses failed destroying the town. Its time to give Hamid crap about capitalism. Zolf tells Barnes to leave off. Zolf joined the Navy because he "killed his brother"!?! Wanna try that again with details? Oh Zolf honey it was an accident. Hamid hugs Zolf while he talks. Zolf says all that then knocks stone out of ceiling in a demonstration of his powers. Hamid remembers Zolf wasn't in Cairo and starts describing the prank gone wrong and I'm just gonna take another sec because if Zolf doesn't take this the right way its gonna hurt. Did Hamid just quote Grizzop at Zolf?   Cel just declared they are staying with the party Just barely through the first quarantine episode. We might hit the same ratio as the dungeon after all. Gosh I love that theme tune

Photography is a calling and a need to communicate through images. It is a language all its own, one which benefits from a diverse array of applications in the world of art — be it museums and galleries, book publishing, commercial or editorial work.
Upcoming photographers find themselves charged with the dual tasks of mastering the medium while also developing a sustainable business practice. Those fluent in the language of photography excel when they learn how to translate their vision across these platforms , very often by winning over an audience of one: those gatekeepers who can help the photographer build a mutually beneficial partnership.
In early April, Magnum hosted an educational two-day professional practice workshop at Jersey City’s Mana Contemporary, in the United States, which featured presentations by leading figures in the field, who offered insights on their inspirations, stories about significant projects, and hard-won wisdom after collective decades working across the industry.

Labs New Artists II Open Call
Red Hook Labs, the public-benefit corporation located in Brooklyn and Downtown Los Angeles, continues in its mission of helping and nurturing photographic talents: after last year’s incredibly successful exhibition, here comes Labs New Artists II.
An international showcase of the most interesting unrepresented artists, the 2nd edition of Labs New Artists will give the possibility to emerging photographers to exhibit and sell their work, while giving the public a chance to explore and get to know the exciting new names in the fields of photography – be it fashion, art or documentary.
The Open Call is up until May 1st, and all the chosen artists, selected by a jury of experts, will be shown at Red Hook Labs Gallery in June 2018. All photographers unrepresented by galleries or agencies can apply, the application fee is 25$ and you can upload up to 20 images.

Cape Town Museum Criticized for Favoring Tourism Over Pan-African Art

Skift Take: The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa seemingly did a great job of building a major attraction — possibly so great that attracting tourists came at the expense of the artistic mission.

Contemporary African art is so hot that it now has its first major museum — in Africa.
Overlooking the harbor in Cape Town, the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, known as Zeitz MOCAA, opened last month in a former corn silo complex that was renovated for 500 million rand ($37 million). It displays strictly 21st century works by a range of young and established artists from across the continent, including South Africa’s Simphiwe Ndzube and William Kentridge and Kenyan-born Wangechi Mutu, as well as African-American and Afro-Caribbean pieces.
Conceived by British designer Thomas Heatherwick, the structure’s most awe-inspiring feature is a hollow oval carved out of the silo complex’s inner cylinders bathed in sunlight from above. The centerpiece is a work by internationally acclaimed South African artist Nicholas Hlobo that resembles a giant rubber dragon, which former Puma SE chairman Jochen Zeitz acquired after it went on show at the Venice Biennale in 2011.
Located in a redeveloped industrial area near the busiest shopping mall in Cape Town, Africa’s top tourist destination, the museum’s opening came at a time when African-American and African artists have taken center stage in art fairs around the world, from the 2016 Armory Show in New York to the Art/Afrique exhibit at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris this year.
Tourism Market
“The museum has brought a massive amount of international clients to Cape Town who wouldn’t have come otherwise,” said Igsaan Martin, director of Momo gallery in the city. “A lot of our clients collected our art but never had that reason to come through to South Africa. Hopefully it will benefit our artists and we can get them into other museums.”
While it’s not the only institute for contemporary art in Africa — the Fondation Zinsou in the small West African nation of Benin pioneered the model — it’s certainly the biggest. It’s stoked huge excitement among artists and curators in South Africa, the country with the most private art collectors on the continent.
Yet along with the praise has come criticism — that the works on display are mostly deemed valuable in western eyes, that art from Francophone African nations gets scant attention and that the museum seems more focused on the tourism market than the nurturing of artists from across the continent.
Western Influence
“African art and value is always determined by what happens in western art markets and those power dynamics appear to remain in place,” said art commentator Mary Corrigall. “Of course, the gallery owners who’ve sold work to Zeitz are happy, and galleries and artists have basically been throwing their works at them. But a lot of people ask: ‘Is this museum for Africans at all? Or is it for tourists?’”
For some artists the museum will provide a platform to accelerate their meteoric rise.
Prices for the colorful tapestries of Athi-Patra Ruga have shot up from about 175,000 rand to 1.2 million rand in the space of a few years. And when Ruby Swinney graduated from art school two years ago, she sold her paintings at barely 1,000 rand apiece. Next year, the Zeitz Museum will dedicate an entire room to her, and collectors already pay an average 30,000 rand per painting.
“It’s great for young artists to be acknowledged by bigger, international museums and institutions,” said Mia Borman, a curator at Whatiftheworld gallery, which represents Swinney. “The opening of Zeitz has had a major impact on our local galleries.”
Tight Budgets
South Africa’s few public art galleries have limited acquisition budgets and the government is facing a fragile economy that has just emerged from a recession.
The museum was the brainchild of a property developer who sought to restore and use the abandoned silo complex in a way that would keep the area commercially attractive. While Cape Town ranks among the top 5 cities in global TripAdvisor searches, it didn’t have a major cultural institution, said David Green, chief executive officer of the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town’s biggest tourist attraction.
Visitors from the rest of Africa can also benefit from the museum, said Azu Nwagbogu, the Nigerian director of the Lagos photo festival, LagosPhoto, who serves as a curator-at-large for the Zeitz.
“I’m really more interested in tourists from other African countries coming here to engage with the museum,” he said. “The Americans, the Germans, they are welcome too. But it really should be focused on making sure that we curate something for us Africans, so that we see ourselves in a positive light, and in a way that we feel like we can take ownership of our own destinies.”
Brand Creation
With funding from institutions including the Public Investment Corp., Africa’s biggest fund manager, the silo was under construction when Green learned that Zeitz, a German collector, was looking for a space to house his African art. Their meeting eventually led to establishing MOCAA, he said.
“This is not just about buildings and renting them out. It’s a brand that we’re creating — this compelling proposition of being able to work here, to live here, to appreciate culture,” Green said. “Internationally, that is where all smart cities are heading.”
Despite hundreds of sponsors, including Gucci and Standard Bank, Green’s plan to create an endowment has so far proved hard to realize. V&A Waterfront, which has a long-term target of 500 million rand, has so far raised less than 40 million rand, he said.
“It’s a big test for Africa, to put ourselves out there on an international platform,” said Borman of the Whatiftheworld gallery. “The focus on African art is, I don’t want to say fashionable, but there are a lot of international people who are very focused on African art.”

While Cape Town ranks among the top 5 cities in global TripAdvisor searches, it didn’t have a major cultural institution, said David Green, chief executive officer of the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town’s biggest tourist attraction.
Visitors from the rest of Africa can also benefit from the museum, said Azu Nwagbogu, the Nigerian director of the Lagos photo festival, LagosPhoto, who serves as a curator-at-large for the Zeitz.
“I’m really more interested in tourists from other African countries coming here to engage with the museum,” he said. “The Americans, the Germans, they are welcome too. But it really should be focused on making sure that we curate something for us Africans, so that we see ourselves in a positive light, and in a way that we feel like we can take ownership of our own destinies.”
Brand Creation
With funding from institutions including the Public Investment Corp., Africa’s biggest fund manager, the silo was under construction when Green learned that Zeitz, a German collector, was looking for a space to house his African art. Their meeting eventually led to establishing MOCAA, he said.
“This is not just about buildings and renting them out. It’s a brand that we’re creating — this compelling proposition of being able to work here, to live here, to appreciate culture,” Green said. “Internationally, that is where all smart cities are heading.”
Despite hundreds of sponsors, including Gucci and Standard Bank, Green’s plan to create an endowment has so far proved hard to realize. V&A Waterfront, which has a long-term target of 500 million rand, has so far raised less than 40 million rand, he said.
“It’s a big test for Africa, to put ourselves out there on an international platform,” said Borman of the Whatiftheworld gallery. “The focus on African art is, I don’t want to say fashionable, but there are a lot of international people who are very focused on African art.”
