re: the parentification of Aemond

I would like to bring in a concept that therepists Terry Real and Esther Perel call "the unholy triangle":

A distant or abusive father

A downtrodden, unhappy mother

A sensitive little boy who feels his mother's pain, becomes overly emotionally enmeshed with her, and moves into caretaking

It's not quite "Alicent parentified Aemond." It's more like "Aemond grew up in the family that he did, saw his mother's predicament, and developed feelings of protectiveness towards her." It's not something Alicent did to Aemond; it's more a natural byproduct of the situation (I'm hard-pressed to imagine anything Alicent could've done to prevent it, given the circumstances).

It's different, but it does invoke a kid who feels driven to protect and take care of their parent, so I think that's what people are labeling (perhaps somewhat crudely) as "parentification".

That’s exactly how I see it actually. I’m still not entirely sold on Aemond having experienced any parentification - whether that be through Alicent or his family circumstances - but I lean more towards the latter. I just think that he is the one that puts these expectations on himself, almost like a reaction to what happened at Driftmark and as a way to cope in an ableist society. 

If I recall correctly, we don’t see Alicent going to him for emotional support or help. At Driftmark, Viserys and Rhaenyra are the ones that pulled everyone into their power play and cornered Alicent in front of the entire court while she’s unraveling because her ten year old son has a gaping hole in his head and no one even bothered to apologize. 

Post Driftmark, the writing pretty much leaves it up to the viewers to fill in the narrative gaps and rationalize character behavior but we do see Aemond offer himself up to go with Criston despite Alicent’s protests. 

Aside from these two instances that some point to to support the parentification theory, what we do see is Alicent chastise Aemond when he comes back dirty and dejected after trying to claim a dragon. She comforts him after he’s bullied. She scolds Aegon and then goes to Viserys for support. 

She very much mothers him, so I think it’s unfair to judge her for her breakdown at Driftmark. (And many do. Alicent is constantly judged for her parenting without consideration for her loveless and abusive marriage, her forced motherhood, or Viserys own neglect.) 

But yeah, overall I agree, and I can’t wait to see where their relationship goes post Storm’s End.

Ok: what REALLY makes this funny is that, in the retellings of this story that I've read, Arthur doesn't even CARE about the infidelity, he's totally cool with his wife banging Lancelot, but Mordred's raising such a stink over it AND Arthur's whole "the law applies to EVERYONE No Exceptions!" reforms that he's bscl bullied into it. So who's to say they WEREN'T secretly a throuple already??

Hi! That's awesome to hear, I'm always excited to see more people get into podficcing, and I'm more than happy to help <3

First of all, here are some great beginner guides that I would recommend to help you get started:

Keep it Simple: A Highly Biased Podfic Guide For Absolute Beginners by GodOfLaundryBaskets - a step-by-step guide from choosing a fic to posting your podfic. Very short and to the point, covers all the absolute basics.

A Newbie's Guide to Podficcing by Azdaema - this one's a little longer and more detailed. I used it myself when I first started podficcing.

And here's a couple of beginner tips from me:

You don't have to own a microphone to record a podfic. You can use whatever recording equipment you already happen to have: your phone, your pc, a pair of headphones, etc. I really recommend doing that to record your first few podfics, just to see if it's something you actually enjoy doing. You can always invest in some better recording equipment later. Or you may find that you don't actually need it - some of the best podfics I've ever listened to were recorded by people on their phones!

When choosing your first fic to podfic, try to choose something short (below 3k words, 5k if you really feel like challenging yourself). It will help you familiarise yourself with the process of recording and editing without being too overwhelming.

Unless you're podficcing your own fic, you will need the author's permission to do so. Thankfully, there are a lot of authors who have already given a blanket permission for their fics to be podficced. Using the Blanket Permission Highlighter browser extension is a great way to find those authors on AO3, and I can't recommend it enough. But also don't be afraid to reach out to authors to ask for permission! In my experience, most of them will happily say yes.

And finally, I recommend joining the podfic community here on Tumblr, and the podfic server on Discord. They're full of experienced podficcers who will be happy to share tips, answer any questions, or just cheer you on!

I wholeheartedly agree with your take!

Out of all the bland, vanilla OCs out there, Alys stands out as a unique example 😇 While most Targaryen protagonist pairings are predictable and cliched, Alys breaks the mold in the best way possible. The popular trend here is to ship Aemond with his niece or another Targaryen OC, using the argument that in a different AU, his Targaryen heritage would have driven him towards such relationships. However, it should be noted that Aemond has never expressed any desire for these types of relationships outside of his duty. And, that’s a keyword here: DUTY. Yet, even with all these societal expectations weighing on him, Aemond chooses Alys because he genuinely desires her. He is smitten with her charms and falls head over heels for her. He even risks his own position to protect her and goes against tradition by marrying an older woman who is a base-born bastard. Now that's true love and rebellion against duty at its finest.

My oomf @azdaema-archive drew a delightful comparison between Alysmond and Duncan/Jenny in this brilliant ask. Both princes defied their duties and threw caution to the wind by rejecting their arranged betrothals with Baratheon women. In doing so, they risked their status and positions for a chance at a romantic future with their chosen ladies 🥰 Now, if you'll indulge me in my boldness, I must say that Duncan/Jenny is the charming ✨cottagecore✨ version of Alysmond's dark gothic mess. Feel free to roll your eyes and raise your pitchforks at my audacity 😭 I regret nothing 💀

I read a great kiolet fic where Klaus and Violet refused to have penetrative sex on the island because of the pregnancy risk (Very Fluffy Domesticity by Azdaema) and it made me think that, after they leave the island and get themselves established somewhere, they would absolutely have kids.

They would tell themselves at first that Sunny and Beatrice were more than enough for them, then that one more child (one that Violet carried, their child) would be perfect, and then I think they would just. Love it. Just be beyond thrilled with being parents, not just to their sister or to a child who had no one else, not just because they had no other choice; parenthood that they fully and happily chose would be entirely different and the idea of a shared home full of their happy children (ones never left unaware and helpless like their own parents left them) is the absolute dream for both of them.

Sunny and Beatrice are the best big sisters btw.

Y'know that scene in "Ariel" where Simon Tam finds out they stripped River's amygdala and she literally cannot repress her feelings?

I imagine a scene after that where Simon admits to himself that basically he's been repressing his incestuous feelings and asking River to do the same. But — with that stripped amygdala — maybe that's an unfair thing to ask of her. Maybe this has to be the end of trying to repress this.

I can see how he would see that it's unfair to her and maybe have to reconsider how he's handling the situation.

I've seen "ad'ika" thrown around, but what about other things Mando-dad could call Baby Yoda in Mando'a?

I like ad’ika because ad means “son/daughter (child)”, and ‘ika is a suffix used for nicknames meaning “little,” so ad’ika means “little child” which makes sense. Another is womp rat ;) It’s really personal preference for what you call them. Ad’ika does the job for me.

What do you use when creating podfics? Any specific programs & editing software or microphones? You've inspired me to want to do podfics but I'm unsure of where to start

Hi! First of all, THANK YOU SO MUCH, this is super flattering!! And it always makes me happy to see more people want to try making podfics!

For recording and editing, I use a program called Audacity. It's free and open source, you can find a lot of tutorials for it online, and most podficcers I know use it.

The microphone I'm currently using is a Blue Yeti and I'm very happy with it. That said, you don't necessarily need a microphone to record a podfic! You can use whatever recording equipment you happen to have: a headset mic, a built-in PC mic, or your phone. If you've never done any audio work before, I would recommend recording something on the equipment you already have first, just to try it out, before you commit to buying a microphone (I recorded my first few podfics on a headset).

If you're looking for some tips on how to get started, here is a great guide by Azdaema that I used when I first started making podfics, and here is another one by GodOfLaundryBaskets covering the absolute basics.

My final piece of advice would be that, for your first podfic, you pick a short story (3k words or less), something that you can reliably complete and that will help you familiarise yourself with the process without becoming overwhelming.

Just wanted to say it’s nice to see someone else who loves and ships the Lannister twins, and also loves Brienne. There is no reason these two things should be at odds, but fandom has antagonized everyone to the point where it is, and it can be rare to come across. So I’m just saying hi, nice to see you ^_^
