The trial of Ayla King, a 19 year old who is one of 61 people charged with RICO for their opposition to Cop City, begins today.
This is a baseless political prosecution intended to target a social movement –– and what happens here has implications for people everywhere.

Realizing that Zenos invites the wol to join him up in the Royal menangerie and then says this:
"The King of Ruin built this place for his foreign queen. He kept it filled with familiar creatures from her homeland. They bored me all.
But this fine specimen, on the other hand, is simply...divine." and then he goes on to show the wol Shinryu.........

fun fact, because Ayla is half human she and Derkila have a messed up contract, while she is his master from the human part, her demon half is his subject cause he's the demon king.
how that happened you may ask? well back in his school age Derkila somehow got thrown in the Human World, there he meet Ayla, who was living in a forest near a human village. despite the turmoil between them they came to an agreement and made a pact.

Iced Tea and Writing
Day 17 - Hobby @rowaelinscourt
just some more fluff lol with a lil mention of sex at the end.
cw: none words: 900+
enjoy!! xx
{ also, there's a tiny easter egg in this fic if you've looked at rowan's wiki page ;) }
Aelin was hiding something, and Rowan was determined to figure it out.
She wasn't scheming anything, he was confident in that, and it wasn't a policy that she was hiding from him because while he was busy rebuilding Orynth and Terrasen's army and navy, councilmen and women still managed to find him and rattled off about their plans that they wanted his support on.
He listened, because it was his duty as king-consort to do so, but he always told Aelin about it before they unwound from their day.
That very thing happened yesterday, and as Rowan walked into his shared study with his mate, Aelin slammed shut a drawer in her desk and turned to face him fully.
He could have sworn that there was a faint blush on her cheeks. He had asked her if she was alright and she said she was, but he sensed the white lie.
And that was when his curiosity was born.
So, with a rare day off for both of them, he told Aelin that he would soon join her in the Queen's Garden but for now, he was pretending to be busy when in actuality, he was going to shift and fly into the garden to see what his wife was up to, as he saw that bundle of paper under her arms this morning, with an ink-pot and glass pen in the other.
Using his magic, he made sure to send his scent the other way as he perched within an orange tree, the branches bursting with fresh, ripe fruit.
He heard the scribble of the glass pen against the paper, her beautiful face scrunched in concentration. She was lying on a thick picnic blanket, a tray full of fresh fruits, cheeses and iced tea laid on top of it.
A pitcher of iced tea that was now empty and Aelin realised it. Huffing, she got up, holding the empty pitcher as she left to refill it.
When he heard the garden door close, Rowan swooped down and read what his mate was hiding.
And became so engrossed in it that he didn't hear Aelin's approach until she hissed in surprised several minutes later.
“Buzzard, put that down!” Rowan didn't and kept on reading. Aelin rushed forward, putting the iced tea away before she extended her hand towards him, silently asking for the papers.
Childishly, Rowan didn't and even extended it into the air where she couldn't reach. His smile was wide enough that Aelin could count nearly all his teeth, his canines gleaming in the sun.
“You're writing a romance story, based on us?”
Aelin scoffed. “It isn't based on us, you territorial beast.”
Rowan's smile grew. “The Fae male is called Raonn, and the half-fae female is called Ayla, how else am I meant to interpret it?”
“It's just a coincidence, Rowan.”
“Raonn is an inch shorter than me, with white hair and hazel eyes and powers of water and invisibility and Ayla—”
“I'm aware of their powers buzzard, as I wrote them.” Her hand was still stretched out, flexing her fingers to hand the papers over.
“Why did you hide it from me?”
“I didn't hide it, I just...kept it locked up from prying eyes. And it's just some stupid scribbles—”
“It's not stupid,” Rowan said, interrupting her. “It's good Aelin.”
“You're just saying that.”
“I'm not,” he insisted, meaning it. “It's descriptive without droning on, the imagery is clear. It's good,” he promised her.
Aelin smiled sweetly at the truth she sensed in Rowan's words. “It's still not based on us.”
Rowan hummed and handed her the papers. “Whatever you say, Fireheart.”
Rowan joined her on the picnic blanket, leaning against the same orange tree he used to hide in. Aelin leaned against his shoulder, handing over the tray of fruits and cheeses. Rowan picked out what he wanted, which he ended up just giving to Aelin as she kept stealing them-pay back for not handing over the papers straight away, most likely.
“I just wanted to do something different,” Aelin said eventually. “After dealing with demon hordes and politics, I just needed to do something that didn't involve the world being at stake.”
“I understand,” Rowan said, “it's good to have a hobby.”
Aelin looked up at her mate, his eyes thoughtful as he stared at her. “You should take up a hobby, too, like drawing. You're good at that.” And he was, her tattooed back was proof of his skills.
His smile from before returned. “Maybe I'll draw Raonn and Ayla, give you some more inspiration. Or,” he begun to say as Aelin opened her mouth to again deny any similarities, “I could draw you in your gold nightgown.”
“I have other colours, you know,” she said, now running a lazy hand up and down his thigh and her mates dark eyes zeroed in on her hand. She had a whole closest full of nightgowns, all different colours and cuts and fabrics. She kept them locked away, however, as she liked to surprise him.
“I know, but it's my favourite.” Which was an understatement, because whenever she wore metallic gold, Rowan fucked her so hard that afterwards she saw stars. “And maybe, right now, I can give you inspiration in the physical sense.”
Aelin snorted as Rowan softly placed her on her back and did give her ideas for her story for later—although she would still deny that it wasn't based on her and Rowan.
Having a hobby was indeed a very good use of her time.

King of Monsters
The crown is lighter than I expected. It looks so impractical, with huge horns on top and spikes covering the sides, but it's surprisingly comfortable. I'm glad it is. My life would be a lot more difficult if it wasn't.
When I first saw it on the head of the last King, I thought that it was part of him, that he was some kind of demon. It was only after I killed him, when that crown fell from his head, that I realized the rumours had been true. He was human, like me, or at least he had been. He had been a hero, willing to risk his life to rid the world of monsters. But, like me, he had learned that saving the world isn't as simple as it seemed. The crown is passed down through the spilling of blood, and killing the King won't leave the monsters without a leader. It will just place a new King in place of the old, who can torture the world in a new way.
I knew this when I picked up the fallen crown. This was my fate, and there was nothing I could do to fight it. My body moved on its own, placing the crown on my head. It fit perfectly. I felt the bony horns fuse with my skull, the thorns wrapping tightly around my head. I knew I wouldn't be able to take it off, not until the next hero would come and kill me. I realized I had been right about the crown at first. It was part of me, but I wouldn't be a demon.
A small, black creature runs past my feet, almost tripping me. Before I can react, a bigger version of that same creature runs after the small one.
“Ayla, control your babies, please. They're going to get me killed like this”, I say, trying to sound strict, but I can't help but laugh. It's not every day that you see baby monsters, and they're surprisingly cute.
“I apologize, Master.” Ayla and their baby disappear into the shadows around the edge of the cave that is my – and their – home.
Shadow Monsters. My mother used to tell me about them. She said that if I was disobedient and rude, the Shadow Monsters would come and take me away. Sometimes I'd hear about kids from our village who were taken away by shadows in the middle of the night. That was the main reason why I went after the King. No child, no matter how disobedient, deserves to be eaten by monsters.
It was my first order as the new King: no more killing children. I expected the monsters to protest, but they listened immediately. Apparently, even Shadow Monsters don't really like eating kids. As long as I provide enough food, they will even stay away from human settlements entirely, and that’s not as hard as I first thought, since most monsters can survive just fine on a diet of plants, bugs and wild animals. Occasionally they will bring in a cow or some chickens, stolen from a nearby farm. I allow it, as long as it happens rarely, and the humans who live on that farm still have enough food to feed themselves. Even monsters deserve a treat sometimes.
Another one of Ayla's babies walks up to me. This one is a lot less energetic than their sibling, as they lie down with their head on my foot. I pick them up and they immediately fall asleep in my arms. I chuckle as I pet their back. Although Shadow Monster's bodies are made of shadows, they're actually pretty soft, almost like fur.
“Did I give you a name yet, little one?” I whisper, even though I know they can't hear me. The communication with the monsters took me a long time to get used to. Unlike humans, they speak with their minds. I don't even have to talk aloud to them, as they can pick up my thoughts, but I still can't get used to that. These babies are only a few days old, too young to have developed language, but still like talking to them. They're the only ones who won't do everything I say without question. I like that little rebellion.
“I think I’ll call you Mano”, I say. Mano turns in their sleep, snuggling against my chest. I think they like their name.
Outside the cave, I can see the sun rising. Different monsters start coming in, ready to sleep after spending the night outside. Some are carrying food or interesting trinkets they found. Kyri, Ayla's partner, carries in some dead animal for their babies to feed on. I bring Mano over to them, while Ayla appears from the shadows with the rest of the babies. They lower their head in a bow.
“Master, I apologize for the trouble they cause.” Their voice is as clear in my head as any spoken words.
I smile. “Don't worry, they’re not that annoying.” I give Mano one last squeeze before giving them back to their parents.
I watch as the cave fills with different kinds of creatures. Although Shadow Monsters are the majority, they're not the only ones who live here. Bebars, Semi-Dragons, Grannor, Minis. All were once feared creatures, known for stealing, kidnapping and killing, but I found that none of them are as evil as humans think they are. All it takes is food, water and sometimes some attention for them to be satisfied.
Sometimes I wonder what the other Kings were doing to make the monsters so bloodthirsty. They were all heroes once, I'm sure they wanted to help humanity, so why did they do the opposite, when it's so easy to control the monsters? I don’t expect to ever know the answer, since everyone who can answer me is already dead, but I still like to wonder sometimes. The monsters won’t tell me anything about the previous Kings. They say that I'm their Master now, and that's all that matters. One older Shadow Monster told me I was their favourite, but they wouldn't tell me why.
I used to be worried that whatever made the other Kings so murderous, would also affect me one day. I thought that maybe the crown would influence me over time, or that living in a cave would drive me insane, but it's been years now, and I still feel the same as I did when I put that crown on my head. Well, not entirely the same. Now that I know the monsters, now that I've lived with them and given them names and held their babies, I know that they need to be protected. Just as much as human children don't deserve to be killed, Shadow Monster babies don't deserve that either. And I would do anything to keep them safe.
I notice some commotion at the entrance of the cave. I don’t see anything alarming yet, but I hear the thoughts from the ones who can. Out of the multiple voices talking at once, I can hear one word multiple times: human.
“Get away from the entrance!” I yell. The monsters obey. “Protect the children!” I see Ayla and Kyri retreating to the shadows with their babies.
I draw the sword that I used to kill the last King. Even though I haven’t used it in years, I always keep it close to me. I don't intend on harming anyone, as I hope to be able to resolve whatever this human wants peacefully, but I don't want to be unprepared.
“King of Monsters!” A man stands in front of the cave, his weapon drawn, ready to attack. “I've come here to end your reign forever!”
No one is taking my monsters away from me.

apologies if this has already been asked but I couldn’t find it. I was wondering how easy it is to share a bed with all the ROs. like, who’s constantly changing positions, who cuddles, who’s the starfish, and who sleeps like the dead lol.
Blade: I think he's pretty easy to share a bed with depending on what kind of sleeper you are, he tends to be quite still and quiet: however, he is an extremely light sleeper, so he will wake up if you get out of bed for any reason, and he's also extremely strong, so if you happen to fall asleep with his arm bracketing you and he doesn't feel inclined to let you out of bed, you're pretty much stuck there! 😅
Trouble: he doesn't tend to toss much in his sleep, but he SPRAWLS like he's sky-diving/free-falling and he also radiates a very intense heat when he sleeps! So he definitely occupies a large part of the bed and makes it toasty, which could be fine for you or it could be annoying! The nice thing is that he sleeps very heavily (pretty much like the dead, like you could drop something on him and he might not wake up), but he also sleep-mumbles/snores a little bit too!
Tallys: she tends to be a considerate bedmate; she is also a light sleeper and will wake up if you move around too much, but the nice thing is that she doesn't technically need a ton of sleep to begin with, so it's not a huge problem for her! She tends to be extremely cuddly in the beginning of the night until you fall asleep, and then she flips over and occupies her half of the bed quietly and restfully!
Shery: she's very nice to sleep with, very cuddly (she loves being the little spoon) and hardly moves or makes a sound! However, she does tend to read in bed/keep a light on her side rather than going to sleep right away, so that's something to consider with her as well!
Riel: he's a bit of a finicky bedmate in that he gets very easily annoyed if you're 1) tossing around and thrashing in the sheets a lot, 2) touching him and making him overheated and stuffy, 3) snoring or talking in your sleep a lot... He's a light sleeper to begin with and loves his space, so you need an extra king-sized bed for him to find it tolerable and hates being jerked out of sleep by you hogging the sheets or something! But on his end of things, that also means he's an easy partner to sleep with so long as you're as still and quiet as he is! He also tends to stay up REALLY late working in his study, so by the time he gets to bed, chances are you're probably already asleep!
Chase: great bedmate when he deigns to let you sleep in his bed 😅 for hookups, he's always climbing out the window while they're asleep before the dawn rises, so actually getting to fall asleep with him for a full night is something only true lovers get to experience (unless circumstances dictate otherwise, like you're on a mission together and you have to share a single bed for whatever reason). But he's an easy person to sleep with (in both senses of the word...), affectionate but not too clingy, fond of spooning, easy to fall asleep, pretty quiet and not restless, etc.! The only thing is that he is an extremely light sleeper, so chances are that when you stir and wake up, he's already wide awake and staring at you like ( ⓛ ω ⓛ ) "hi"
Red: he's a night owl like Riel so he's not always falling asleep with you, but when he does, it's pretty great! He likes spooning or at least keeping a hand on you while he sleeps; sometimes he sleep-talks or gets up because he can't fall asleep, but if you don't mind that, there shouldn't be any issues! He is very tall though so it can be awkward to cram into a smaller bed with him... his limbs just hang off everywhere
Ayla: she's a bit like Trouble, she sleeps hard and like the dead, and it sort of just depends on where she's at; at home, once she's really comfortable, she sleeps very deeply and heavily and in a tangle of limbs where you look at her passed out like "wow... she's going to wake up so well-rested..." But in places where she's not fully comfortable like on the road, she tends to be a really restless sleeper and can even kick and punch in her sleep, so watch out for that!
Briony: she's a fairly easy sleeper; she curls up like a shrimp on her side, so she doesn't occupy a lot of space, and she LOVES to cuddle or be cuddled! She has a tiny snore or whistle when she breathes in her sleep sometimes, but the most notable thing about sharing a bed with her is that she gets a bit grumpy when woken up too early... the kind where she'll put a pillow over her head and whine if you're up and about, rattling things around the room as you get dressed!
Lavinet: she's definitely a picky sleeper and loves her space, and she owns so many pillows you'll constantly be feeling like you're occupying the same bed as 2 dozen cushions and constantly kicking them to the floor! She enjoys being spooned so long as you're not a twitchy or thrashy sleeper yourself, otherwise she'll have to relegate you to your own side of the bed... and she tends to be a space-hog, so you might find yourself on the very edge of the mattress at times unless you're okay with reasserting your domain a lot!

El Ayla | Ez.Abde
Warnings: none, the tiny tiniest sex mention
It was summer already, Abdessamad wasn't summoned to the national team, indeed he was called out to play with the olympic football team and the tournament was set to begin in the late ten days of june. So it meant you guys were going to visit morocco. Abde was so thrilled to see his family since it has been an eternity since the last time he did, and so were you. It wasn't the first time you visited Beni Mellal, your husband's hometown, a beautiful and small city.
You were stretching you arms since you spent what felt like eternity in the car, the road's duration from Casablanca, where your plan landed, to Beni Mellal was 4 hours,so obviously you both grew tired, especially him cause he was driving. Abde told his mother that you guys will visit soon but he didn't specify when so it was like a surprise. You felt the hot breeze of the city against your body, agitating your long hair. Abdessamad's arm was now wrapped aroud your waist to draw your attention to him since you zoned out, your eyes wandered aroud his features but you didn't get the best view since it was dark.
" Let's go " He whispered in your ear, clearly excited, the thing that made you smile at his cuteness, you nodded as you made your way through the gate of the mini villa reaching the door. He exhaled, you sensed he was a little nervous so you held his hand, giving him a reassuring nod as he raised his hand to knock the door. Silenced ruled the atmosphere, you both heard footsteps coming closers, the door flicked open and revieled abde's mom. She was chocked at the unexpected visitors and before she could register, her son already threw himself at her, squeezing in a thight hug and kissing her head occasionally. You smile, your heart brusting with happiness at the sight before as you felt tears prickle in your eyes. Abde's mom engulfed you in a tight hold, kissing your temple and you let your tears flow, you felt warm, you felt home even tho it's not but wherever abde is it felt home. She then separated the hug, cupped your face in her palms smiling brightly.
" Masha'allah a bnti, ghzala " you smiled at her comment. " Come on inside, you must be tired"
" I'll grab the luggage quickly and join you " Abdessamad conceded and you both nodded and launched towards the living room, it was so traditional, a mix of off white and golden. You sat on the 'sdari' as she kept asking you about you, how your family doing and abde joined along with his father, you got up and kissed his hand of of respect as he gave you a side hug, you considered as your father. You guys kept chatting, doing the catch up and occasionally laughing. You felt your eyelids heavy as ever and you yawned, drawing your mother-in-law's attention.
" Bnti! You must be tired, go to sleep. Abdessamad, take your wife to your room. It's all clean, you just grab covers from the drawers." She exclaimed, rubbing your forearm gently as you nodded. You got up to follow abde who grabbed the luggage and mumbled a good night to them.
Abde's room was quite big with the king size bed that was centered. You hurried, oppening the windows to aerate the room since it was suffocated. You felt abde's arms snuck around your waist, his chin upon your shoulder, planting soft kisses on your neck. You leaned at his touch, enjoying the peaceful yet loud moment. You turned aroud so now you were facing him, wrapped your arms around his neck and they hugged long enough to hear each other's breathing. After a while, you separated the embrace earning a whine from him which made giggle.
" You ruined my parade" He accused childishly.
" Awa3di yana, I'm not going anywhere babe. Just wanted to change my clothes i'm exhausted. And you should do the same" You suggested, already openning your suitcase and grabbed a random sleepwear, doing the same for Abde who just smiled at how thoughtful you were, small gestures mean a lot for him.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
The sun poured through the window causing you to wake up, you oppened your eyes to the unfamiliar ceiling then you switched your gaze from the roof to the warm bundle that was snuggled against your beating chest, his legs were caging yours, the same for his arms. He was a real Koala! And you weren't complaining. You tried getting up without waking up Abdessamad but you failed cause he jolted awake. You pitied him as he looked so tired so you patted his lower back gently and whispering " Just comeback to sleep babe." he hummed as response.
After doing your morning routine, you joined abde's mom in the kitchen, she was busy preparing el msemen, its scent was in the next level, it was the scent of a moroccan morning.
"Sbah lkhir Khalti" you greeted softly, kissing her forehead. She smiled at you first but she suddenly frowned which made you confused.
"Uh Oh, you calling me khalti! I'm disappointed ! you should call me Mama." She protested sweetly, making you smile. You nodded your head " Wakha a yma"
You offered to help her but she completly refused so you just sat in the lauchroom, sipping at your moroccan mint tea and chitchating with your mother-in-law who was beyond happy for your presence. You knew Abdessamad wouldn't wake up any time sooner.
"We have a long day awaiting for us." She exclaimed while the two of you were eating, Abde's father had some errand to run. She smiled after seeing your muddled features, then she continued
" We'll go to the Hammam near. " You could help but jolt from excitement, it has been an eternity since you went there, surely you exfoliate weekly in Spain but it isn't anywhere near The traditionnal Hammam. After you finished your breakfast, you insisted on washing the dishes and you made your way back to the bedroom, entering as quiet as you can so you'll not wake up your sleeping princess, you packed what you'll need and skipped quietly.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
You were currently in your father-in-law's car, making your way back home after the never-ending hammam session. You felt like dying, the heat was too much for you to handle, your shoulders were sore from the exofoliating but nevertheless you felt fresh. You made your way to the house, meeting abde who was laying down in the living room and scrolling through his phone. As soon as he acknowledged your oresence he droped the phone and made his way towards you, the smile creeping to his face when he noticed your state. Your cheeks were rosy, it is ’serr dyal lhammam, your hair was hidden under the 'zif Hayati', you were wearing an simple navy blue Caftan. His eyes traveled aroud your apparence and he loved what he was seeing. He came closer and planted a gentle kiss on your forehead, his hand between your shoulder and you couldn't feel more appreciated.
"Bseha ya omri" you smiled at his whisper but you made some distance between the two of you when you heard footsteps approaching. Abde giggled at you as you smiled sheepishly, you left the scene , heading to your room to put your things away and the next destination was the kitchen cause you thought some mint tea would be cool to serve at the moment, plus it would freshen you up. A while after, you were heading to the living room, holding a silver tray full of teapotand its glass cups.
" Lah irdi 3lik ya bnti, you shouldn't have done that you're my guest"
" Rbi ikhlik lili a yma, it's not a big deal!" You smiled as you started serving the tea, then you sat next to your husband who was beaming proudly.
" Abdessamad, Wallah if i ever found out you're giving here a hard time I'll disown you." your mother-in-law spoke firmly, subsequently she started giggling when she saw her son's offended featues, then she switched her her gaze to you and resumed " If anything happens you just call me and you'll see" you nodded firmly, looking at abde from the corner of your eyes who scoffed.
Your parents in law started chatting when your husband took it as an occasion. He leaned closer to you, fingers flicking at your earring.
"Babe you're driving me nuts. I missed you." You knew exaclty what he meant but you just decided to pull your dumb card, since his parents were literally in front of you.
" How can you miss me when i'm sitting next to you babe?" you responded, and had some troubles holding your laugh at his face.
" I missed you in bed !" he decided to play along, thinking he won.
" I literally slept next to you, you were clinging at me like a koala !" He shook his head, laughing unbelievably. The chitchat was enthusiastic, the hushed town added the fun. It's like you guys disconnected from your surrounding, forgot there's two ppl in front of you.
" I missed fuck-" you didn't let him complete his obscene sentence as you pinched his thigh. " Awa3di ana hchouma, Basl !" he gave a sheepish look and you knew he wouldn't stop anytime sooner so you escaped to the kitchen claiming you'll cook lunch.
This was requested! As you may noticed, i used the chamali slang, mine since i lived there my whole life so deal with+ plus i think it's cute <3

im always happy to read your stuff :D! could you give a synopsis of it :0?
i can certainly try! this is the tumblr!blurb not the book jacket!blurb.
casey, a (more or less) werewolf with a linkedin, is a bit bored with how well his life is going (save for the Repression his parents put on him since he came out as bi, and also got bitten.) so imagine his delight (?) when he is followed on his way home from work, and someone pulls a gun on him. and before he's (fully) shot with silver bullets, someone else jumps into the fray to violently and horribly murder the gunman!
naturally, instead of running away like a sane person, casey concedes to helping dump the body. and instead of trying to pretend it never happened like a sane person, he goes to find the guy who rescued him (pruitt) the next day. and instead of accepting pruitt's vague answers and moving on like a sane person, he gets kind of obsessed with this mysterious fucked up guy and they fall into an insane relationship that casey's twin sister, ayla, does NOT approve of. because casey struggles to keep secrets, but he also struggles to tell people the whole story. he also goes to a shifter support group every thursday. healthy king<3 (he is Not healthy)
but as time goes on, casey uncovers more details about pruitt's life and what led him to that alley, and he finally starts to question why he was so eager to involve himself in this darker world in the first place. there's a lot of intimacy and a lot of trauma and it actually gets fucking devastating by the end and there's a constant sense of dread permeating even the soft moments that they manage to scrounge up together and i can't stop thinking about them. yayyyyy<3

WLW Book Recommendations
Happy Pride!
Recommendations are under the cut due to the size of this post. The books listed below are:
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
Crier’s War by Nina Varela
The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri
The Winter Duke by Claire Eliza Bartlett
Ace of Spades by Faridah Abike-Iyimide
Seven Devils by L. R. Lam and Elizabeth May
Malice by Heather Walter
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon (high fantasy)
Yes, this book is a monster, but it is well worth your time. Told from multiple perspectives spanning a huge fantasy world, an ancient evil is waking up, and humans must be prepared. This book does a great job of blending many different cultures into one narrative, and the way it deals with organized religion is better than any other book I've ever read. While this is a fantasy over a romance, the sapphic relationship in this book is top tier. It develops slowly and naturally; it's not big and sweeping like a lot of romance in fantasy, but the smaller things really come through.
Crier's War by Nina Varela (high fantasy)
In a fantasy world, humans are ruled over by automae, artificial beings that were initially created by humans but have now taken over as the 'superior' beings. Ayla's family was killed by the king, and she vows to take revenge by killing his own family, his only daughter, Lady Crier. I find the history of the automae very interesting in this book, and Crier's story in particular has a lot of good reveals. While this is an intense high fantasy, there is a bit of humor in it. Told from both Ayla and Crier's perspectives, I find it incredibly funny that a human girl is scheming how to assassinate a princess while said princess is experiencing her first crush on said human girl.
The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri (high fantasy)
This book is set in a world inspired by ancient India, and tells the story of a maidservant and princess. The maidservant has a dark past that involves illegal magic and old societies, and the princess has been imprisoned by her cruel and despotic brother. This book is very much on the slower side, but some people prefer that. Similar to Priory, this book is told from multiple points of view, not just the two main characters. The unrest in the kingdom is slow and creeping but happens steadily and realistically. Also, concerning the romance, I actually quite like that the two main characters, Priya and Malini, don't exactly have a very healthy relationship.
The Winter Duke by Claire Eliza Bartlett (high fantasy)
One of my favorite books, The Winter Duke is about Ekata, one of the many children of the duchy of Kylma Above. All she wants to do is leave this place and her family to pursue her dreams of scholarship, but when her family falls into a permanent sleep the day before her departure, she must step up to rule. As someone who loves political fantasy, this book is right up my alley, and yours too as long as that's something you like. I really like that this book explicitly states that Ekata has zero interest in men romantically and is only interested in women. Her romance with Inkhar definitely brings out the YA aspects of this book. Ekata is forced to grow up so quickly, it's nice to see her have a crush and get flustered over it like any teenage girl.
Ace of Spades by Faridah Abike-Iyimide (mystery thriller)
At a predominately white private school, the only two Black students are targeted by an anonymous texter, Aces. Though they have nothing in common, they team up in order to uncover Aces and protect their secrets. Plot wise, this is by far my favorite thriller I've ever read. It's tense, it'll keep you on the edge of your seat, and it discusses institutionalized racism, especially in academia, masterfully. One of the main characters, Chiamaka, has a great sideplot of coming to terms with her sexuality. However, when it comes between her safety and her romance, I love that she keeps a level head on her shoulders and always chooses the former. (There is also MLM rep in this book with the other POV character.)
Seven Devils by L. R. Lam and Elizabeth May (space opera sci-fi)
An intergalactic empire spreads across the universe, and it's up to a ragtag group of rebels to stop it. Eris was once heir to the entire empire, but she gave that up to be part of the Resistance, and one mission may be the deciding factor in the universe's continued freedom. While Eris is technically the main character, this is fundamentally an ensemble cast with multiple perspectives. This book has quite a bit of LGBTQ+ representation, including a sapphic relationship between two of the POV characters. While not a huge focus of the book, their relationship is sweet and touching.
Malice by Heather Walter (high fantasy)
Malice is a retelling of Sleeping Beauty following Alyce, the Dark Grace, who is reviled but used by all in the kingdom of Briar. Alyce dreams of escaping Briar until she starts to master her powers and meets the Princess Aurora. I will admit that I prefer the plot to the romance in this book for the most part, but the ending really gets me sometimes. Alyce's powers and her people's history are so interesting, and Aurora is a great, understanding, and kind love interest.
Stay tuned for more pride recommendations all throughout this month!
