HOLY SHIT
THAT WAS AMAAAAAAAZIIIIIIIIING
Before watching AXZ my favorite season was G (especially in comparison to how weak GX was) but this blows it out of the fucking water. Everything here was so perfect, so clean and tight, I only just finished so maybe I need time but I can’t really think of a weak moment. I think we’ve established that I love Saint Germain, and her physical resemblance to characters I’m already attached to aside she was an amazing character in her own right.
How will XV stand up to this? I don’t know really, but I’ve run into a few spoilers (my twitter feed was clogged up with it while it was airing) and I know the stakes are about to get even higher.

On Symphogear and Alchemy
Symphogear, we need to talk.
For the most part, you're great. Everything I've ever wanted from a Lesbian Magical Girl Karaoke show and more. But then I watched episode 10 of AXZ, and saw this:
Tumblr media
[caption: Elfnein looking shocked and saying "But the distinction of macro and microcosm is the most fundamental law of alchemy!"]
To put it simply, this is about as wrong as you can possibly be about alchemy. And I'm going to use this opportunity to both explain why, and to share some rambling observations I've had about alchemy in Symphogear. (Plus a prediction about Hibiki’s impending apotheosis and/or deicide)
Now, I will say, I'm making an assumption here. I'm assuming that Symphogear is using Hermetic alchemy (or at least a variant of it). This assumption isn't without merit for a few reasons.
Firstly, Hermetic alchemy is almost always what is referred to when people say "alchemy", just because Hermeticism was that wide-ranging and, frankly, influential (A discussion of Hermeticism as a philosophy can be saved for later, but some relevant points are brought up below). Heck, it's what Issac Newton was using before he died of mercury poisoning (a fate that many alchemists shared, due to their tendency to use (and sometimes eat) mercury when trying to make philosopher's stones).
Secondly, and speaking of philosopher's stones, remember back in episode 12 of GX where Hibiki, Chris, and Tsubasa all release the safeties on their Ignite modules (helpfully created with alchemy by Elfnein)? Here are some reminders:
Tumblr media
[caption: Aoi Tomosato on the bridge of the S.O.N.G. submarine saying "They've shifted from Phase Nigredo to Albedo!"]
Tumblr media
[caption: Sakuya Fujitaka looking at his console which prominently displays the word RUBEDO saying "They've reached the final phase, Rubedo!"]
In the creation of a philosopher's stone the prima materia (literally "first material", the basic stuff that must be worked and transmuted to make a philosopher's stone) is moved through four stages on its way to becoming a philosopher's stone
Nigredo: Or "blackening" wherein the material is burnt, and partially destroyed
Albedo: Or "whitening" wherein the material is separated into opposing principles, and rinsed clean
Citrinitas (sometimes xanthosis, which is a far better name because it's got an x in): Or "yellowing" wherein the material begins to glow with its own inner light, showing that it is becoming whole unto itself
Rubedo: Or "reddening" wherein the opposing principles the material was divided into during the albedo phase are reunited and merged, resulting in a truly Complete stone that has gone through a final transmutation and is now itself capable of transmuting other materials
"But wait!" I hear you say, "That's four stages! Symphogear only used three!" That's true, and I'll tell you something interesting about alchemists. Namely that alchemists are lazy. After the 15th century or so many alchemists tended to compress citrinitas and rubedo into one step. So there you go. Three steps, three Ignite stages.
Now, here's where we step aside a moment to point something out about alchemy in general and philosopher's stones specifically.
Thanks to a certain British schoolboy, most people know that a philosopher's stone can turn lead to gold, and create the Elixir of Life (or Grand Panacea, if you prefer). But as I've alluded to above, Hermetic alchemy was part of the larger whole of Hermeticism, which held as a central tenet "as above, so below" (or if you prefer to quote anime alchemists "One is All, All is One"). Which is to say (and here's why Elfnein was so wrong in that first image), that the self is a model of the universe, which is in turn a model of the self again, and that affecting one can effect a change in the other, because they are fundamentally the same thing.
Thus, the philosopher's stone wasn't just a way to make some extra cash by turning lead into gold, it was a metaphor for, for lack of a better term, becoming one with the Divine. If the creation of the stone could elevate useless lead into Pure gold and elevate an ailing human body into a hearty and hale one, then, because One is All is One, it could also take the base human spirit and elevate it to its own Pure and divine state.
Now that that's out of the way, let's get back to our Magical Karaoke Lesbians.
The Symphogear girls don't hit the albedo stage until they're fighting Carol after she refused to stop destroying the world, at which point they hold a pure will to stop her, A "determination to fist", if you will, and Carol (an alchemist, remember) effectively separates the four of them into an Us (Carol, wanting to deconstruct the world) and a Them (The Symphogear girls wanting to keep the world in one piece). Hello, opposing principles!
The girls quickly move from albedo to rubedo and heyo, what's this?
Tumblr media
[caption: The six Symphogear girls, in X-Drive mode, all glowing with an inner light]
Six girls, all glowing with their own inner light. That sure looks like citrinitas (or the first half of rubedo in the compressed version) to me. And just as an aside that will certainly never come up later, Hibiki's X-Drive mode is yellow.
Anyway, they beat Carol and save the world. Yay! Now let's jump forward to episode 7 of AXZ Where this happens:
Tumblr media
[caption: A picture of what will come to be called "The Fool's Stone" with Elfnein (offscreen) mentioning "the basic alchemic philosophy of the contrast between the microcosm and the macrocosm"]
S.O.N.G. needs a way to stop the Illuminati's philosopher's stones from interfering with the transition into Ignite mode, and Carol suggests finding a piece of debris from that time Gungnir was fusing with Hibiki and almost killed her by turning her into a rock, claiming that since it's a piece of worthless trash, it will be able to stop the Pure light of a philosopher's stone. Chris takes the opportunity to get in a dig at Hibiki and dubs this the "Fool's Stone".
Except hang on just one minute here. We've established already that the "basic alchemical philosophy of the contrast between the microcosm and the macrocosm" is that there isn't one, so why would a piece of garbage be any good here?
To answer that, let's assume here that a fool is a person who knows nothing. From there we can make a jump to Socrates, the (in)famous ancient Greek philosopher who is reported* to have said "I know one thing: that I know nothing." This is one of the reasons he was thought of as wise. So a philosopher (Socrates here is a synecdoche of all philosophers because One is All, All is One) is someone who knows nothing, which is to say a fool (Hello, opposing principles!). A Fool's Stone is a philosopher's stone, and this is what now coats the Symphogear relics. If the relic is already Pure, then the Pure light of Saint-Germain et al's philosopher's stones won't do anything to them.
*I know he never says this in Plato, but apocrypha often takes root anywhere it can and now we're here. Besides whether it was Socrates or another philosopher said it is unimportant, as we'll see in a moment.
Anyway, on to AXZ episode 10. Aside from Elfnein being a terrible alchemist and getting the very core of her art completely ass-backwards, we also have something interesting.
Tumblr media
[caption: Saint-Germain and Hibiki stand side-by-side, ready to kick Adam Weishaupt's dumb ass]
Here's Saint-Germain, an accomplished alchemist/philosopher, finding out that her ally is actually her enemy (Hello,) and joins up with Hibiki, a notable fool (opposing), to fight him, merging the Us/Them distinction (principles!) that's been between them all season.
So, to recap, at the end of GX, Hibiki was left at the end of citrinitas (or halfway through rubedo), and we got a new crop of alchemists to replace the one who died from an overdose of too much yellow determined fisting. One of these alchemists has just merged a shit-ton of opposing principles regarding Hibiki.
What happens next? Well, since Saint-Germain just finished putting Hibiki through rubedo, Hibiki becomes as the Divine, and uses that new position to punch Adam Weishaupt (pretender to Hibiki's new position) in his smug face.
tl;dr: I just used alchemy to prove that Hibiki will become a god

ok brief on the symphogear kanatsubamari coma au because i shouldn’t be writing this rn but i really want to. has nothing to do with axz or xdu because this was done in like early 2016
under the cut
just a small change, kanade falls into a coma after singing her zesshou in episode 1 instead of dying. the rest of the series happens mostly unchanged. tsubasa stays hopeful for the first while, because kanade is strong and it can’t last That long, but it does last that long and tsubasa grows bitter because she feels herself falling apart and knows kanade would be upset when she wakes up and sees her as a wreck
GX happens and is over. maria admits she has a thing for tsubasa after GX, but tsubasa turns her down because she’s still too attached to kanade, who’s been comatose for like six years now
tsubasa’s afraid to “leave” kanade, even though she’s sure kanade would be okay with her moving on and having a relationship. she feels that moving on would be admitting kanade is never coming back, when she’s been fighting so hard to deny the doctors saying it’s not looking good
finally tsubasa decides that her image of what kanade would say is right. she does like maria, she asks her out, and maria is very careful about the topic of kanade. they’re together for a few years, tsubasa feels confident that she has a fair balance of still missing kanade and wanting to see her again, and accepting that having a different girlfriend now isn’t being unfaithful
years into tsubamari’s relationship, like 10 years after the concert incident, tsubasa gets the call that kanade woke up. she goes to the hospital immediately
maria’s a walking sack of insecurity. she knows it makes sense that tsubasa missed kanade and is spendign a lot of time with her in the hospital room, but she’s also already accepted that she’s going to be single again. she and tsubasa don’t bring it up with each other because they both know kanade waking up is complicated for both of them, and are ignoring the problem. kanade seems oblivious to this
a few weeks after, kanade asks to see maria privately. maria’s awkward, but kanade is like “hey something is bothering you, yeah? what’s up? it’s about me right?” and maria dodges around it because she doesn’t want to make kanade feel bad for coming out of the coma and ruining her own relationship
kanade tries to relax maria and leans in for a kiss. maria highkey panics and backs away like “BUT AREN’T YOU AND TSUBASA TOGETHER?” kanade kinda ?????? “yeah aren’t you too?” maria returns the ???????? and kanade can only ask like “so we’re not a thing too?” while tsubasa and maria were stressing about whether tsubasa could tell kanade she moved on and is dating maria, kanade woke up like “hell yeah two girlfriends”
so they talk about it Properly soon after. tsubasa agrees to a three-way relationship immediately, and maria takes a little time to decide she’s okay with trying it. in the end it works out and they're happy. maria has two messy girlfriends to clean up after who distract her with kisses when she tries to remind them laundry goes in the hamper. kanade leaves physical therapy straight into hardcore workouts and isn’t happy until she can bench both gfs at once. tsubasa has two tall strong gfs to show her she’s loved

Symphogear AXZ music so far
Oh boy. Please don’t tell me I’m the only one not feeling the new songs in AXZ. Maria’s battle songs from G and GX are impossible to top, but Stand up! Ready!! is just so awkward to sing. It will probably grow on me, but it definitely wasn’t love at first listen.
Hibiki’s songs feel too reminiscent of her older songs and they lack their own identity this season. The Egyptian one is definitely better of the two and I love the intro, but after that, it’s forgettable. The shouting repetition in the chorus is a bit overdone by now, but I’m willing to let that slide, because it’s Hibiki’s thing.
What bothers me is that Maria’s new songs follow Hibiki’s shouting repetition pattern, and that’s just lazy, in my opinion. I’m trying to interpret it as Maria looking up to Hibiki and taking influence from her so she could be a strong and caring leader, just like her. This could be reflected both by the facts that her CD was the second one to be release (right after Hibiki, solidifying Maria as the second unit leader) and the fact that her battle song takes cues from Hibiki’s musical style.... It’s either genius songwriting, or plain lazy. I don’t know what to think at this point. I’m torn. I’m definitely overthinking this, so I’m sticking with lazy.
Maria’s vocals also feel too calm. I remember I had the same problem with Kirika’s song in GX, where the CD version felt inferior to the anime version. I eventually got used to it, and once the chorus hit, it was all good. I just expected more energy from Kirika, I guess. We’re faced with similar issue this season, but with Maria... Yoko Hikasa is my bae, my most favorite seiyuu of all time, and her singing voice is energetic, melodic, dramatic and feminine and omgofmgowfphpwghwg.....*akhem* My bias aside, I think she could’ve packed a bit more punch in the CD version of Stand up! Ready!! Once you get past the first verse, she actually gets a bit more energetic, but she sounds almost bored at the start.
Uh, gonna go listen to Maria’s music a bit more and, in less than two weeks, I’ll most likely make a post about how much I’m loving the song lmao.
No solid opinion on the two group songs yet. I like the pre-chorus in the main trio song, but the rest of the song feels too hectic. The bar is set high, because Radiant Force is just too much of a beast. I will probably change my mind after I hear the CD version, without all the gunfire and shouting in the background.
The FIS trio song is majestic af, not sure if I prefer it over their GX song, but so far it’s the strongest contender for my favorite song of the season. It reminds me of Saint Seiya or older anime stuff in general. I’m a sucker for more Yoko Hikasa and Yoshino Nanjo (my 2 favorite seiyuu of all time, duet when?) and I can’t wait for the clean CD version.

Summer anime 2017
All the summer anime has premiered now, except for Hell Girl season 4 (7/14) and The Reflection (7/22), and I'm going to be away this weekend, so I might not watch Hell Girl until next week anyways. So it seems like a good time to write up some brief thoughts on the shows I watched, which is nearly all of them. The exceptions are:
HiDive exclusives, I didn't want to get another subscription
Netflix shows which won't be available legally for months (fuck you Netflix for that, at least I have the Kakegurui manga)
Sequels I hadn't watched the original of
Symphogear, which hasn't been announced by anyone yet (as of 7/13)
I didn’t actually finish the first episode of all of them, but I tried.
This ended up super long, because there are a lot of shows.
I’m going to go through these in order of premiere date, anything else is too hard to keep track of. I’ll include a note for the full length shows I didn’t watch as well.
Hina Logi: From Luck & Logic (on Crunchyroll, Saturdays at 12:00 am EDT)
This is a spinoff of Luck & Logic, which I didn’t watch, and I didn’t watch this version either. I really don’t know anything about this, you can check out the reviews on ANN.
Fox Spirit Matchmaker (on Crunchyroll, Saturdays at 9:30 am EDT)
I bailed out of this one less than 10 minutes in. It’s a bad romcom with bad animation, and I didn’t like any of the characters. I can’t recommend it at all, even if you like straight romcoms.
Kakegurui (Netflix, so probably all the episodes will be availabe early October)
First watch the OP (Sayo Yamamoto worked on it) right now: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5sahqn
I couldn’t actually watch the show, since it’s a Netflix license, but I’ve read the manga up to the latest chapter and I love it! (It’s the source of my icon). It’s very trashy, and often gay. There is a male MC, but he doesn’t really do much, and mostly exists to be the person who gets everything explained to him. Also because we never get Yumeko’s (the female MC) point of view. I highly recommend the manga and the anime.
Fate/Apocrypha (Netflix, it was announced at AX that the first batch of episodes would be available November 7th)
This is yet another Fate show, but I’ve been hearing good things. Apparently the source for this one isn’t written by Nasu, which is a point in it’s favor. I don’t really have much more to say, if you want to get into Fate stuff, I recommend Fate/Zero. I never really got into other Fate stuff.
Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu (on Crunchyroll, Saturdays at 1:00 pm EDT. Also on Anime Strike but why would you choose that over crunchyroll???)
I watched some of Touken Ranbu - Hanamaru last fall, but it didn’t really grab me. I definitely prefer the bloody action of Katsugeki to the slice-of-life comedy of Hanamaru. I also can’t keep track of the huge number of characters the game has, so Katsugeki’s focus on a small number really helps. If you like bloody action, I recommend it. It’s one of my favorites this season.
Symphogear AXZ (no announcement yet, hopefully Crunchyroll)
This is the fourth season of Symphogear, the first 3 are on Crunchyroll. I’m currently part way through the second season. It’s magical girl action with a music focus, and I enjoy it a lot more than I thought I would. The premise for this fourth season seems like it could go some bad places (read: could get very transphobic), so be warned. I’d recommend checking out the first season at least, though.
Knight’s & Magic (on Crunchyroll, Sundays at 11:00 am EDT)
This definitely wins a prize for the worst punctuation in an anime title I have seen. That being said, I enjoyed the first episode, but gave up partway through the second. It’s an isekai story based on a light novel, which is not a setup that inspires much hope in me, but I liked that the MC was reborn(?) as a child, rather than simply transported. If you like mecha shows check it out I guess?
Clean Freak! Aoyama-kun (on Crunchyroll, Sundays at 12:30 pm EDT)
This is a comedy sports anime that actually really surprised me. I’m probably not the best person to talk about it, so I highly recommend reading this review at Anime Feminist. I liked it, and I’m currently partway through the 2nd episode, and I think I might stick with it.
Battle Girl High School (on HiDive, Sundays at 12:30 pm EDT)
Not willing to get a HiDive subscription yet, and it doesn’t sound like this show is worth it. If you’re curious, check out the reviews at ANN and Anime Feminist.
Elegant Yokai Apartment Life (on Crunchyroll, Mondays at 11:30 am EDT)
This is a supernatural slice of life comedy, and while it’s not amazing in anyway, it’s not really bad either. If you really like this sort of comedy I’d recommend checking it out, but I’d probably recommend Inu x Boku Secret Service first.
LOVE and LIES (on Anime Strike in the US, and HiDive in some other territories, Mondays at 12:00 pm EDT)
I did not like this show. It wasn’t actually painful to watch, so I finished the first episode, but I will not be watching more. The premise is based on the idea that Japan starts assigning marriage partners when kids turn 16 based on some sort of compatibility in order to fight dropping birthrates. Actually, the show specifically mentions genetic compatibility, and the whole premise has a very eugenics feel to it. On top of that, this setting is being used for a romcom. There are probably some interesting stories that could be told with this setup, but a straight romcom is not one of them. All this being said, I’m definitely watching people’s twitter reactions to the show going forward, because I’m sort of curious what kind of trainwreck this might become.
Restaurant to Another World (on Crunchyroll, Mondays at 2:05 pm EDT)
This show was definitely very nice to look at, but I just couldn’t get invested in it. If you want a peaceful show about a restaurant that opens to a fantasy world once a week, then check it out. My favorite part was the dragon lapping stew from a pot, tiny in comparison to her.
Aho Girl (on Crunchyroll, Tuesdays at 11:30 am EDT)
(short-form, 13 minutes) Even though this is a short, I still couldn’t make it all the way to the end of the first episode. It’s very 2000′s style super fast comedy, and feels super mean spirited.
Tsuredure Children (on Crunchyroll, Tuesdays at 11:45 am EDT)
(short-form, 13 minutes) I finished this one, which was mostly cute vignettes about straight highschoolers in love, but the 3rd one made me feel really uncomfortable. Not planning on watching more.
Fastest Finger First (on Crunchyroll, Tuesdays at 3:30 pm EDT)
This is a show about kids doing quiz bowl, which wasn’t a thing at my school, but this is probably the closest I’ll ever get to a math competition anime. The main character was likable enough, though the girl was more interesting. This feels like it might become a girl who is experienced at x teaches boy how to x, and he is the best ever at x, sort of thing. I do want to check out the second episode though. An interesting thing to me was the voice of the girl. She’s apparently a rookie voice actress, and sounds very different from the typical anime high school girl voice.
Netsuzou Trap -NTR- (on Crunchyroll, Wednesdays at 8:30 am EDT)
(short-form, 9 minutes) This show is super super SUPER trashy yuri, and I loved it. I can’t really recommend it, but I’m definitely sticking with it.
Saiyuki Reload Blast (on Crunchyroll, Wednesdays at 11:00 am EDT)
This is an adaptation of the latest Saiyuki manga. I have never read or watched any Saiyuki before, but I watched this episode. It had a very 00′s feel to it, from the character designs to the dialogue. I imagine that this is the sort of thing that you watch if you already like Saiyuki, or maybe if you miss the feel of anime from the early 00′s. I’m not sticking with it.
Dive!! (on Anime Strike, Thursdays at sometime, anime strike is bad at sharing details)
I wanted to like this show, but it just wasn’t good. It’s very clearly trying to get the Free! crowd, but is hindered by bad animation and boring story. It’s this season’s Noitamina show, by the way. The most notable thing about it for me, was that it actually managed to trigger my fear of heights, which I don’t think has ever happened to me with an anime before. I think it must be because diving (off a 10 ft board) was a real thing I was too scared to do (and probably still am too scared to do).
Convenience Store Boy Friends (on Crunchyroll, Thursdays at 3:05 pm EDT)
This feels like the most boring possible show you could make from it’s title. You could have personified stores, personified products, but instead it’s just a quite boring highschool romance. They don’t even work at a convenience store! They just occasional stop by there! Also the guys working there looked way more interesting than any of the main characters. Possibly the most boring premiere I watched all the way through.
Action Heroine Cheer Fruits (on HiDive, Mondays at 9:00 am EDT)
I didn’t watch this one because it was a HiDive exclusive, but I’ve actually read a lot of good things about it, which is not what I would have expected with that name. Still not worth the HiDive subscription though. You can check out the review at ANN and Anime Feminist.
Made in Abyss (on Anime Strike in the US, and HiDive in some other territories, Fridays at 10:00 am EDT)
This was a super beautiful premiere. It’s a really gorgeous looking fantasy series. It didn’t completely grab me, but I think that’s because it requires me to be in a mode where I can actually give it full focus, which makes it harder to watch. I can’t recommend this show yet, however, because I have heard that the manga goes really bad places. I’ve heard that the first episode already removed some of the skeevy stuff, but I can’t recommend this until I can see where it goes.
18if (on Crunchyroll, Fridays at 10:00 am EDT)
I gave up about 10 minutes into this one. It’s a very dream sequency show, but it doesn’t have the animation quality or pacing to make it work for me. If you like surreal stuff in general, I’d say check it out to see whether it grabs you, but know that it might just feel really boring.
Vatican Miracle Examiner (on Anime Strike in the US, and HiDive in some other territories, Fridays at 11:00 am EDT)
I fucking loved this!!!!! It’s my favorite premiere so far, and I can’t wait for more. It’s not a good show, but it’s super fun. This review at Anime Feminist explains what I like about the show. It has the feel of some of my favorite stuff from the early 00′s, and it’s super campy, and I love it.
Chronos Ruler (on Crunchyroll, Sundays at 3:00 pm EDT)
This is not a good show. It has super bad animation, convoluted plot, overly expository and over dramatic dialogue (ok, half these things were also true of Vatican Miracle Examiner, I admit). I finished the whole episode, but I really have zero interest in watching more. It just isn’t offering anything that other shows aren’t doing better this season.
Altair: A Record of Battles (on Anime Strike, Fridays at sometime)
This is a very good show, but on that I really need brainpower to watch, which means that I will probably drop it at some point. It’s very nice looking, and I love political intrigue, but it doesn’t feel like easy watching. Check it out if you enjoy political intrigue stuff.
Hitorijime My Hero (on Anime Strike in the US, HiDive in some other territories, Saturdays at 11:00 am EDT)
This was decent BL. Not good, but not terrible either. The main couple is a student-teacher relationship, so be warned of that, I guess. It just felt super plain  to me. Also super confusing. The first episode felt like it jumped around a lot chronologically, and it was really hard to understand what order things happened in. I’m not continuing with it.
Welcome to the Ballroom (on Anime Strike, Sundays(?) at sometime)
I watched the early premier of this on Twitch, which had desynced subtitles, which was super annoying. I don’t know if that’s still true of the version up on anime strike, but it’s frustrating that this is still a problem for them. And with a hyped up premiere as well!!! The show itself is a shonen sports anime about ballroom dancing. The character designs are very lanky and weird looking, but I sort of like the style. It just didn’t really grab me. I think I didn’t like the main character enough to care about him. And that I don’t care about ballroom dancing at all.
A Centaur’s Life (on Crunchyroll, Sundays at 10:30 am EDT)
This was a sort of weird show. It starts off with a lesbian kiss, and does a school comedy sort of things for the first half. The second half is that plus world building, which brings in a bunch of weirdly dystopian elements. Like talking about past injustices being illegal. So I’m going to keep on watching this for the little gay bits and to see where the hell it’s going.
Princess Principal (on Anime Strike in the US, HiDive in some other territories, Sundays at 10:30 am EDT)
I really loved this. It’s a spy show about girls, so I’m not at all surprised, but it’s still a nice feeling. The OP has hints of gayness, which is good. And the show in general is a fun spy show. It’s like what I wish Joker Game had been. I really recommend checking this one out. It’s another one of my favorites.
Angel’s 3Piece! (on Crunchyroll, Mondays at 8:30 am EDT)
This most frustrating thing about this is how good is was for a lot of it. Like I wasn’t expecting anything from the summary, but then the first half of the show was pretty neat, and the music was good, but it’s by the author of Ro-Kyu-Bu, which should have told me everything I needed to know. As should the episode title: “Heart Throbbing for Elementary School Kids!” That title probably says everything you need to know.
In Another World with my Smartphone (on Crunchyroll, Tuesdays at 9:00 am EDT)
I gave up on this one super quickly. I just don’t care about another dude dying and going to a fantasy world and suddenly getting a harem. I just don’t.
New Game!! (on Crunchyroll, Tuesdays at 10:00 am EDT)
Sequel to New Game!, which I never finished. It was a cute show about women making games though. Maybe I should try to watch more of it sometime. ANN has a review of the first episode of this.
The Irresponsible Galaxy Tylor (on Crunchyroll, Wednesdays at 12:30 pm EDT)
(short-form, 3 minutes) I guess this is related to The Irresponsible Captain Tylor? I never watched that either. I watched this, but didn’t really pay much attention. I guess if you watched the original thing check this out???
Magical Circle Guru Guru (on Crunchyroll, Tuesdays at 2:05 pm EDT)
So apparently there was an older version of this that aired in 1994, but this is a complete reboot, not a sequel, so you don’t need any familiarity with the original. The sense of humor reminded me a lot of Senyu, with a heavy focus on classic rpg video game elements as well. It’s a very fast paced shouty sort of humor, but it was a fun first episode. It didn’t really do anything I haven’t seen before, so I’m probably dropping it.
Light of the Clione (on Anime Strike, Tuesdays(?) at sometime)
(short-form, 9 minutes) I was interested in this one based on what I read of the premise, but so far it’s been two students feeling sorry for, but not helping, a girl getting bullied. Since it’s a short, it has a much lower bar to clear for me to stick with it, so I probably will. The character designs feel sort of off, though, and the animation isn’t very good.
Ikemen Sengoku: Bromances Across Time (on Crunchyroll, Wednesdays at 10:45 am EDT)
(short-form, 5 minutes) CG short about a dude who gets transported back in time. Based on an otome game, apparently. Otome games need more full length adaptations, they keep on getting these short form series instead. Anyways, this show doesn’t really have anything to recommend it.
Nora, Princess, and Stray Cat (on Crunchyroll, Wednesdays at 11:15 am EDT)
(short-form, 4 minutes) Cute short that has a harem set up, accept someone transformed the boy into a cat, and no one knows how to turn him back. Funny, cute, and short enough for me to keep watching.
My First Girlfriend is a Gal (on Crunchyroll, Wednesdays at 11:30 am EDT)
This show is not good. You should watch Please Tell Me! Galko-chan instead. Seriously, the most interesting part of this show is the bedazzled censorship objects. I bailed out about five minutes in, because I couldn’t stand the main character and his friends. There is nothing to recommend this show. Even if you want weird censorship items, you can watch Seven Mortal Sins instead.
Classroom of the Elite (on Crunchyroll, Wednesdays at 12:00 pm EDT)
I was expecting to quit out of this show partway through, since it really didn’t look at all interesting to me. I also hated the first five minutes or so. But I actually really liked the rapport between the two main characters, probably because it reminds me of My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU. I curious to see where the main plot heads as well. I think it’s worth getting through the opening to see what the show has to offer, because it definitely got better after that.
GAMERS! (on Crunchyroll, Thursdays at 11:30 am EDT)
This is another show I was expected to not make it all he way through, but instead I really liked it. It’s about a high school gaming club, and the super popular girl trying to recruit the main character to join. I think what really worked for me was how relatable the main character felt at times. He’s a “casual” gamer, and feels really intimidated by how intense the club members are. I really understand that feeling. I’m looking forward to more of this show.
And that’s it! I’ll probably wait to write about Hell Girl and The Reflection until after both of them air, at which point I’ll also have a better idea of what shows I’m actually going to keep.

Summer First Impressions
So, it occurred to me that the way I had been posting (only mentioning my opinions after I’d finished/dropped a show) was not exactly helpful for people wondering what exactly I was still watching. So, for the first time, I watched (almost) every single first episode to get a complete picture of the Summer 2017 anime season from the beginning. Note that with the exception of shows that started last season (Re:Creators, Sakura Quest, HeroAca S2) I have only watched the first episode of these shows, even those that have already aired more than one. Every few weeks I’ll give a (shorter, obviously) list of what’s still here and what’s newly on the shit list.
So, what follows is a quick list of every show I watched and a quick bit about why I did or didn’t like it.
On Probation:
18if, I'll stop if he keeps saving helpless girls Elegant Yokai Apartment Life, I'll stop if it doesn't present an actual hook Aho Girl, I'll stop if I decide I can't stand the heroine Tsuredere Children, I'll stop if it stops being realistic Angels 3Piece!, I'll stop if it actually does what the first episode hints at Altair Record of Battles, I'll stop if it keeps feeling like it's ticking boxes and moving at the speed of light Chronos Ruler, I'll stop if the plot goes too far off the rails
Still Watching:
My Hero Academia S2, because they are my literal children Classroom of the Elite, because it's like if Baka and Test were serious Restaurant to Another World, because a good concept can go a long way if you use it right Fastest Finger First, because the quiz show is unique and I haven't found anything to object to Re:Creators, because it oozes cool and is really well-paced Sakura Quest, because it reminds me of Locodol
Knight's & Magic, because I'm down for an isekai show with purpose
Katsugeki TOUKEN RANBU, because it gets the Most Improved award
Gamers!, because co-ed club comedies are almost always better Saiyuki Reload Blast, because it's a gritty action comedy with fun characters Dive!!, because I'm lacking in decent sports shows this season and it's better than Aoyama-kun Made in Abyss, because I love a good Ghibli knockoff Princess Principal, because AESTHETIC New Game!!, because it takes a lot to get me into a female-only show Hell Girl: Fourth Twilight, because I'm down for a fourth season of Suspense and Awful People
Dropped Like a Hot Plate:
In Another World With My Smartphone, for being the least ambitious show I've ever seen Aoyama-kun is a Clean Freak, for not being funny and looking like garbage Hina Logi - From Luck & Logic, for letting trashiness override anything that could have been interesting Vatican Miracle Examiners, for combining horror and mystery and still being boring My First Girlfriend is a Gal, for being porn Convenience Store Boy Friends, for being too boring to boring the boring NTR Netsuzou Trap, for being rape-y
On Hold: Love & Lies, unless the preposterous concept is explained better
Disqualified/Skipped: Battle Girl High School / Action Heroine Cheer Fruits, because just when I think that Daisuki has gone away, we get HIDIVE Kakegurui / Fate/apocrypha, because Netflix doesn't understand what they're doing A Centaur's Life, because I'm not interested in monster girl shows anymore Owarimonogatari Second Season, because I can't get into this show until Crunchyroll uploads the original in HD Sagrada Reset, because I've only heard really bad things about it Senki Zesshou Symphogear AXZ, because nobody has licensed it two weeks into the season and that breaks my heart The Reflection, because it hasn’t aired or been picked up yet
Still Watching Later: Welcome to the Ballroom, for a concept I've never really seen before Magic Circle Guru-Guru, because good parodies are hard to come by and Dragon Quest is ripe for the picking
HIGHLIGHTS Crunchyroll/VRV Classroom of the Elite, Studio Lerche I'm a little biased about this studio, and the twist at the end of the episode can be seen from miles away, but we already have the makings of a solid deconstruction here. The main trio thus far reminds me a lot of OreGairu's Service Club, with the uninterested protagonist, the ice queen heroine, and the genki girl with a friendship complex, and combining this with concepts from Negima and Baka and Test is going to make a fun ride.
Katsugeki TOUKEN RANBU, Studio ufotable Turns out ufotable knows how to make more than Fate and Tales. There's plenty of time travel shows this season but this one is easily the most well-produced, and given that I couldn't get through the first episode of Hanamaru, a very pleasant surprise in terms of serious action.
Anime Strike Made in Abyss, Studio Kinema Citrus Already shaping up to be the dark horse of Summer 2017, the first episode was drop dead gorgeous, and the concept is taken straight from the repertoire of Studio Ghibli, with art design reminiscent of Level 5. We already know those two things work together!
Princess Principal, Studio Actas & 3Hz My aesthetic. It's infinitely more interesting than its closest contemporary, Joker Game, by being more visually interesting and not being about boring cardboard cutouts. Overall, I watched 32 first episodes, only effectively skipping five (since four of them are just plain unavailable), and I dropped 7 out of those 32 after the first episode, so I’m still watching 78% of those shows. We’ll see how many of the probation ones are doing soon. And that’s it!

Hello! I wanted to consult you ei th something's about Symphogear, if that's okay? For one do you think that in Gs when Hibiki grew back her arm that that was because she was turning into a philosopher stone and it's healing properties and b) since alchemy is such a big part of the show do you think you'll be re-watching the series to catch hidden clues/foreshadowing/theories? Thank you for your time :)
Let’s take these in order. AXZ spoilers below (no read more because Tumblr isn't letting me add one?):
a) I think Hibiki regrowing her arm was more a function of the Gungnir fusion getting out of control rather than any specific alchemic processes.
Now that said, the second stage of making a philosopher’s stone, albedo, involves washing clean the stone-in-progress clean of any impurities left after the burning and blackening of the first stage, nigredo, and as we just learned, Hibiki was cleansed of everything by Shénshòujìng‘s blast; not just the Gungnir fusion, but also the Curse of Balal. That seems a pretty good setup for albedo right there.
2) Rewatching is something I’d like to be able to do, but at 52 episodes (and ~18 hours) it doesn’t look to be on the horizon with my non-Symphogear backlog as long as it is (180 GB at time of writing because I am bad at just making bookmarks on MAL). Maybe if I can convince a friend of mine who just found out anime isn’t a product of Satan to watch it, I’ll go along with them and see what I find. In the meantime, might I recommend @nekekur ‘s very fine series of first-time watching posts? They’re quite good and have just gotten to the Mikugear sequence in G
