I love that Brandon introduces a country of non-Rosharan people, half of whom are some sort of colonial entity and half of whom are just Normal Guys That Change Color and they literally just vibe in the background and everyone ignores them. They appear in a couple interludes and a novella. And one of them wrote the blurbs for each book. Wild shit.

I read interludes 5 and 6 of Wind and truth and I'm so happy that Axies the collector appeared!!! For sure one of the most interesting characters in stormlight, despite his few interactions with any character. But I was really hoping to see him in book 5, so I'm very happy about it.

Taravangian's chapter was very concerning tho (as usual). Is he planning to cure Moash's blindness? Not looking good.

Anyway, I'm a day closer to the contest of champions, yay!

Brandon Sanderson: The Curse of Kind is slightly different, but analogous to a Torment from a Dawnshard. He did not hold a Dawnshard. But something similar is happening.

Shadow and Self

Inspired by another post, I am fascinated by the narrative potential of the temporal metals in mistborn. So I decided to write a speculative scene at the conclusion of the cosmere to explore it because that is the type of thing I do apparently. Might revise it into a more full fic if I feel like it.

Hoid stood at the end of it all, from the days spent learning the flute as a boy on Yolen, to standing vigil over the death of God, to now. The mistakes of millenia may be healed. All were familiar that stood before him now and so precious few were intimate.

Taking out a vial, one he was proud to say he had kept since an egotistical cult leader cultivated one of the greater heroes of the cosmere. Hoid drank slowly. The watching faces cruel glimpses into who once was.

Gold. Hoid began to burn that strange fire and a gilded shadow emerged before him. He would not need gold, so he smothered it with the explosive flame of duralumin. It had been for only the merest of moments but he would not see that condemnation longer than he needed for penance. Now his eyes closed could not hold back what the shadows promised. Suddenly, he knew that they had faded. Darkness too vibrant replaced by a darkness utterly mundane.

Malatium. The same shadows, different people. Different people, the same shadows. As a Vessel reflects on the versions of it that it could have been, so too does the memory held tight by Power. Thus the shadows had twins engaged in a penumbra where each existed in the space of the other and was entirely distinct within. Strange to remember now that the way these looked was unique to an individual, an observation one Lightweaver had made long ago. Hoid watched as faces were lost to the light, a slow breath released.

Electrum. Now came forth golds inverse, a blazing heat of self contained within the shadows which gave the self definition. Choices unmade revealed themselves within those outlands of identity. Choices delayed He regretted to need this. Each of him blinked away.

Atium. The inferno bearing the mark of the gods. Honor...Dalinar... turned his eyes from the golden reflection which emerged and that he had the senses to see. He would not allow his future made into faith, the choice would only be his. A new axis of potential would complicate matters but that had its own remedy. What they would do was of absolute importance.

Taking another slog of duralumin from an mass produced waterskin, he wondered why the Torment would not stop this. As long as they had known each other, and its embargo on harm still extended to all save himself.

Each pile of tinder burst aflame simultaneously, different versions of selves and shadows appearing in a concentration dense enough to block all sight. Each metal expanded the mind's ability to understand the effect. Mayhem itself could be found ordered through a sufficiently large dataset. Another time he might have stopped to curse those with whom he learned to understand through science rather than metaphor.

Zinc flared dull, awareness sharpened and shadows began to fade by some small part, leaving most untouched and yet marked in contrast against those that dimmed. Finally he reached again to the viral, explosive blaze at his core.

For an axon of a moment stretched across days of consciousness, everything was blank. It was as he had always seen the world unaided.

The explosion of light did not originate from Cephandrius. It simply was. It was in every corner and vast gulf of the cosmere.

He could do right, finally.

Cosmere Inktober 2021. Day 14: Science.

Both Axies and Shallan have a very hands-on method of research. For science, of course.

Axies notes: anonymous spren 

Traits and appearance: Small circular spren, the size of a mans fist. Grey, with a pattern of black across them, almost in the shape of spectacles. They can mimic human voice impeccably, though they seem to not have any intelligent consciousness of their own. 

Behavior: As one approaches you, they will ask you a question, or give you a message. Neglecting to answer them allows them to linger, and they will follow you until you respond to them in some way. They can also be banished through concentrated thought. 

Circumstances of appearance: It is unknown what attracts anonymous spren. They are very rare, but seem to be drawn more to people who are in the public eye, although it is not unknown for them to appear to a common person, seemingly with a message from a long lost loved one. They do not appear to be attracted to animals. 

History: Anonymous spren were named such because of how they seemed to be anonymous messengers carrying the message of a human to another, having no sentience of their own. It is unknown where or how they get these messages, or if they can speak to the dead or not, as it is often claimed. 

I have yet to attract one to myself, despite my continued attempts.
