Meet the Artist 2024! I'm Bee, and I will be your host ✨

On a whim, I made a new 'meet the artist'… but it became such an illustration that it felt quite odd putting so much text all over it! So I kept it simple. For further reading:

Some major art influences of mine include Mia Ikumi, Naoko Takeuchi, CLAMP (esp the Rayearth era), Yoshihiko Umakoshi (specifically his Precure and Doremi work), Kira Imai, and Chiho Sato.

My tools are still generally paper & ballpoint and/or sai2. I've been drawing quite a lot offline, actually... it's just a matter of time before some of it starts to make its way up here. I just need to scan and sort things out, which I've become quite lazy about... This summer's been just gross and melting away all my willpower. Hopefully it'll start easing up now!

One thing I appreciate abut Maxine Minx is that, as driven and ruthless as she is, she doesn't see other women simply as competition. At the two of the tensest moments in X and Maxxxine respectively she tries to save Lorraine and Molly, even though it puts her in more danger.

She's noticeably quiet in the scenes she shares with other women. In X Bobbi Lee asks her what her big dream is, and she gives no response. In her scenes with Tabby and Molly in Maxxxine they do almost all of the talking. Maybe she doesn't want to say too much and give these women some possible future leverage against her, but I find the lack of cattiness very refreshing. Maxine seems to struggle with friendship, but also to realize that she can't get to where she wants to be by herself. I'm happy enough with how Maxxxine ended to not be desperately craving a fourth film in this franchise, but it would be really interesting to see how her relationship with her director, Elizabeth Bender, could be developed in a sequel to latest film.

The world went quiet. The pain in his body faded into nothing. Into something secondary. Lorcan slid his other arm around Elide, bringing his mouth close to her ear as he said, "You have to let me go."

Elide didn't shift her focus from the keep ahead. "No."

That gentle quiet flowed around him, clearing the fog of pain and battle. "You have to. You have to, Elide. I'm too heavy-and without my weight, you might make it to the keep in time."

"No." The salt of her tears filled his nose. Lorcan brushed his mouth over her damp cheek, ignoring the roaring pain in his body. The horse galloped and galloped, as if she might outrace death itself.

"I love you," he whispered in Elide's ear. "I have loved you from the moment you picked up that axe to slay the ilken." Her tears flowed past him in the wind. "And I will be with you ..." His voice broke, but he made himself say the words, the truth in his heart. "I will be with you always." He was not frightened of what would come for him once he tumbled off the horse. He was not frightened at all, if it meant her reaching the keep.

So Lorcan kissed Elide's cheek again, allowed himself to breathe in her scent one last time. "I love you," he repeated, and began to withdraw his arms from around her waist. Elide slapped a hand onto his forearm. Dug in her nails, right into his skin, fierce as any ruk. "No." There were no tears in her voice. Nothing but solid, unwavering steel.

"No," she said again. The voice of the Lady of Perranth. Lorcan tried to move his arm, but her grip would not be dislodged. If he tumbled off the horse, she would go with him. Together. They would either outrun this or die together.

i dont think i ever shared this here but i actually familial f/o mono from li.ttle. nightmares and LN resurfaced on my feed again and im just,,,, sniiff.... my booyyy.... monoooo 🥹 there's just something so charming about this little boy that makes me wanna protect him wiwiwi (and if you know what happens throughout the story, its heartbreaking)

he's just a good kid, really sweet, which i unfortunately cannot say the same with six... maybe he's just a refresher from the things i witnessed from six in her game 😔😔

I’ve been thinking about weapons for a while now

As in why do the department heads have them. 

Well, actually only three bosses have actual weapons, that being Korsica, Zanzo and Kale. I don’t consider Rekka’s hands and Mimosa’s wings as weapons-weapons even if they are used as one, and Roquefort is basically a cyborg. He’s going to be stronger than any normal human by design.

When I think about it, why do they even have them? Korsica is the only one that actually needs a weapon if we apply our world logic here. She’s the top dog of Security, so it’s only natural in her position to have them. Everyone else doesn’t need any weapons. Why would The Marketing head have a weapon? Why would the R&D boss have a weapon? Why would Kale, the CEO, even need a weapon?

For the most part, they don’t, but they still do. Rekka is an ex-pro wrestler, so it’s only a given that she uses her prosthetics for fighting and they have that function (trying to live out her glory days, I presume). Zanzo is a weeb + head of R&D, so he can get himself any “toy” he wants. Mimosa doesn’t really have a weapon per say, yet she can use her wings as one. Roquefort is that instance where Kale probably took his wishes heavily into consideration when building his mechanical body, so I’m not even surprised here (I believe Roquefort is an actual furry with a lot of money outside of his job, so yeah). Kale’s sword is a last minute add in my opinion, because that mf doesn’t even know how to use one properly and he thought he as well try to deal with Chai himself. 

What am I leading this up to? Does HFR world have conflicts that require a constant presence of weapons in your day-to-day life? Because I don’t see a reason for characters to have them besides the cool factor in general, but for the game and not the world itself.

Which is WHY I DIDN’T GIVE ROULETTE A WEAPON JUST LIKE THAT AND LET HER ACTUALLY FIND IT RANDOMLY WHILE PRACTICALLY LOAFING AROUND. YES I WAS LEADING THIS UP TO SOME OC TALKS IM SORRY.

But anyways, I wouldn’t mind discussing the “requirement of weapons” topic because it genuinely couldn’t leave my head for a long while. Until I wrote this. And I can’t stop thinking about HFR world-building and all the little things like “Does Vandelay Island have all four seasons?” or “Does Vandelay Island have small/medium businesses or is it completely owned, in each and every single way, by the company itself?”

As you can tell, I can’t wait for the sequel to come out. I know it probably won’t answer all of these questions, but a person can dream.

Yeah, women with swords and daggers are amazing and I love them and everything, but have you ever seen women with axes? They look so much more badass, especially if the woman is otherwise traditionally feminine and wears frilly dresses and dainty accessories and giggles cutely. So where are all of the characters like this? Does Lucie Herondale from the Shadowhunters have to carry this weight all by herself? I mean come on, look at how cool this is!

If you're writing a high fantasy or anything involving warrior women, please include a lady with an axe.

Also, does anyone have any book recs for characters like this?
