We all know thee lil cans. Some of them were probably out first forays into coffee, maybe our mom let us have some instead of hot cocoa on a cold day. No wait, this seems more like a drink your Aunt Patty n Selma would have at their house and drink every day. She let you have some to feel grown up.

Or maybe you shared a cup with your new Gothy roommate in the 80s?

Even the boys who played football enjoyed it!

and just maybe you sipped French Vanilla Cafe with your friends and joked "who was that waiter's name in Paris?" "JEAN-LUC!" like in the commercial. (yes I'm aware of the Mad TV bit)

Although in an article about annoying commercials that ran in the Rocky Mountain News in 1992, reader Dennis Lancaster said of the ad: "The ad that really bugs the heck out of me is that General Foods International Coffee ads with the two ladies there and the French cafe coffee or whatever it is. I wish they'd have stayed in France." 1

I noticed that General Foods would advertise their instant coffee a lot in college newspapers in the 1980s.

Before we had frappuchinos, there would always be the same recipe every year for a frozen or a cold coffee drink, just with a different flavor each year, it seemed.

In the late 90s, they came out with the Cappuccino Coolers drinks, which I adored back then. It was powder that you mixed with milk -- so yeah, gotta be near the bathroom when drinking those. Maxwell House just discontinued these this year. By then they were called iced lattes.

General Foods International Coffee debuted in 1973 with these three flavors. Looks like Cafe Au Lait became Cafe Francais shortly after. You walk into the store today, and guess who is still there almost every time:

I bought all three flavors in the last month and yup they all taste a lil watery. Maybe 'cuz we're just used to stronger coffee in 2023.

‘Drastic uptick’ in failing grades at Fayette schools

The article I chose is ‘Drastic uptick’ in failing grades at Fayette schools. I chose this because I have family members in Fayette county that are struggling with the whole “NTI” (non traditional instruction) online alternative schooling. I thought this would be a nice article to read to really grasp how the other Fayette County students are doing compared to my family members. This article talks about how the Fayette county students have not been doing as well as past years according to their statistics due to the change from in person learning to online learning. “School districts from coast to coast have reported the number of students failing classes during the COVID-19 pandemic has risen by as many as two or three times”. The author goes on to say that between middle and high schoolers in Fayette county their total final failing grades have raised 10.75%. Rising from the initial 7,899 failing students during the first semester of the 2019-2020 school year, to 23,488 students as of the first semester of the 2020-2021 school year. This article, ‘Drastic uptick’ in failing grades at Fayette schools, is a credible source. I know this because it fits within all the criteria that a credible source needs. My source is from the Lexington Herald-Leader which is a newspaper that goes through a publication process where many people check to make sure the article includes facts and is written with quality. It also has many reviews and editors throughout the process. This article also provides dates that are significant with the argument along with the publication date that correlates to the arguments dates in terms of significance. Also, any source of information that has been used that was not an original thought of the author has been quoted and clearly identified. Lastly, I know this source is a credible source because I found it on UK Libraries and I know I can always trust any type of work from this site.

The cost of different menstrual products and the taxes on them in across the globe...

There are many options that make periods more sanitary and easier to manage such as, tampons, pantyliners, menstrual cups, and pads. These items average around $150-$300 annually. Usually, tampons are $7 a pack, pantyliners are $6 a pack, menstrual cups are $10-$40 a cup, and pads are $3-$12 a pack.

Now the taxes...

-In the United States, the tax is 4-10% depending on the state; the amount of annual tax revenue the states collect on the sale of menstrual products is $1-20 million.                                                                                                                                 *This excludes Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania because they began exempting their menstrual tax before 2015.               *Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon followed suit by collecting no sales tax at all.                                                                                         *This then prompted Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, and New York to also repeal the tax in 2017.                                                                                            (These stats came from Jennifer Weiss-Wolf’s book, “Periods Gone Public: Taking a Stand for Menstrual Equity”, pages 1693 and 1664 on the E-book version)

There is no denying that there is a gender injustice pertaining to the tax. The gender injustice stems from the tax being a “luxury” tax, as it is not deemed a necessity like food or medicine. Menstruation is unavoidable and important, but it is not treated as such. So, the better alternative would be making the items universally tax free. Taking down the tax can ultimately lift a small financial burden; it would challenge laws that are unfair and discriminatory; it would model economic parity and gender equity; and it would be a gateway to the normalization of menstruation socially and economically, especially in politics (Weiss-Wolf 1714).
