listen listen liSTEN it's been nearly a decade and i still think about these questions??? all of Lelouch's actions were based on the 'ends justify means' outlook but all the conflict against him was also based on opposition to that?? on one hand i always think, was Lelouch right? but then also: did he NEED to be right?? he accepted that his actions would come off as self-serving but he had an objective that he never lost sight of, so what exactly are we judging??

and don’t even get me started on Suzaku wtf I have so many issues with him but from a characterization POV he was brilliant??? the way they turned around the white-knight trope with him and the conflict between him and Lelouch was such an INTENSE thing throughout the series (though I’m not sure how I feel about his relationship with Euphy but I always thought his attachment to her was less about actual love and more about seeing some sort of salvation in her)

Aaaand yes, I heard about the season 3. Though I’m not sure what they’re going to do with it lol. The fandom is so divided on that whole “Is Lelouch alive or dead? SHOULD he be alive or dead??” front. I always thought he was dead for sure, and his death was meaningful because it also came with a complete sacrifice of his character in the eyes of his people, so idk how they’re going to reconcile that with a new season. (Sorry for blowing up your inbox. I couldn’t resist!)

Dude it’s totally fine to blow up my inbox, it’s empty most of the time anyway and I love talking to other fans. I hope you don’t mind a long answer because I have so many FEELINGS?!!!

1. LELOUCH, MAN. Was he right? Did he NEED to be right? Was he right? UNLESS HE DID SOMETHING TO ENSURE EVERLASTING PEACE IN THE TWO MONTHS BEFORE HE HAD HIMSELF ASSASSINATED, I DON’T THINK HE WAS RIGHT TO DO WHAT HE DID. AND HE NEEDED DESPERATELY TO BE RIGHT BECAUSE HIS WHOLE THING WAS, I HAVE TO KEEP GOING, I HAVE TO KEEP KILLING, I HAVE TO KEEP USING PEOPLE AS PAWNS BECAUSE IF I DON’T ACHIEVE THIS GOAL, THEN ALL THEIR SACRIFICES WILL AMOUNT TO NOTHING. AND HE JUST KEEPS THIS MINDSET THROUGHOUT THE ANIME, USING PEOPLE AND KILLING PEOPLE AND CLIMBING UP A MOUNT EVEREST OF BODIES JUST SO THAT HE CAN ACHIEVE A GOAL THAT IN THE END HE WOULDN’T BE ALIVE TO ENJOY.

I AM JUDGING HIM BECAUSE HE USED SO MANY PEOPLE EXACTLY LIKE PAWNS ON A CHESS PIECE, TRAMPLED OVER THEIR FREE WILL, ENSLAVED THEM, HAD THEMSELVES COMMIT FUCKING SUICIDE, EVEN THOUGH HE ACCUSED THE EMPEROR OF DOING SOMETHING SIMILAR. WAS IT BETTER FOR PEOPLE TO LIVE IN PEACE THROUGH THEIR COMMON HATRED OF A DICTATOR? WAS IT BETTER FOR PEOPLE TO LIVE IN FEAR OF DESTRUCTION, LIKE SCHNEIZEL WANTED TO DO WITH DAMOCLES?

On the one hand I think it’s better for people to be united, rather than living in constant fear. But in the end, all of the people who died for Lelouch’s goal – and it was HIS goal, because WHEN DID THE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD EVER ASK HIM TO GIVE THEM WORLD PEACE? EVEN HIS OWN SISTER NEVER ASKED HIM TO DO THAT AND HE WAS APPARENTLY DOING IT FOR HER – all of the people who died for his goal, all their sacrifices would be meaningless if the peace he wants is broken. 

Now, he said he wanted to create a kinder world for Nunnally to live in (and isn’t that selfish?). And maybe he did – maybe, just maybe, it will last her lifetime. But what if it doesn’t? There will always be people who will use others for their own ends. That’s what keeping people as people, with free will, does, and Lelouch was totally willing to accept that (he killed his goddamn parents because of it). Say the world has like a decade or two of peace. How long will it take for some ambitious asshole to screw it up again and break the peace? They have Zero as a symbol, but in the end, will it be enough? If it isn’t enough, then everyone will have died and been enslaved for nothing. Every single person Lelouch killed had a family, had people who loved them, had goals, they weren’t just chess pieces (as Shirley’s father’s death and Shirley’s consequent breakdown brought home to him), and I think he understood that. But he had to keep playing them as chess pieces to achieve his goal. And if peace is broken, then like Lelouch said, their sacrifices will have been for nothing.

2. Suzaku man, I am SO FRUSTRATED with him. Like I thought he was a white knight in the beginning but it turns out he was suicidal and like you said, wanting salvation. He was so inconsistent. He said he wanted to change things the “right way,” but he supports a genocidal nation and throws himself into situations where he might be killed. HOW IS HE SUPPOSED TO CHANGE ANYTHING IF HE DIES??! 

But in the end he finally changes his mind and does things Lelouch’s way and it strips off all of his ‘white knight’ image altogether. And he is finally honest. So I like that. The way he and Lelouch change as people, and the way they are both so fallible and human, are two of the reasons why I like the show so much.

Euphemia was my FAVORITE CHARACTER (because she was the only one who thought she could achieve peace, or some form of peace, WITHOUT MURDERING SCORES OF PEOPLE) and what Lelouch did to her, however inadvertently, will always break my heart. I think Suzaku did see her as a kind of salvation, and he did love her, but he didn’t love her enough to live for her. He fucking needed Lelouch to mind control him to save himself. But he obviously loved her enough to throw away some of the ideals he was clinging to and become a more honest version of himself.

3. As for season 3, I think it goes back to some of my initial screaming points. Can peace between all people honestly last? How long will it take before someone or some group tries to amass power to themselves again? How long before we start tearing ourselves apart again, because we never seem to learn from history? Did Lelouch do anything to ensure lasting peace, to make all the lives he took worthwhile? (He better have, he was always scheming.) Does keeping Suzaku as Zero make a difference? What happens if people find out that Suzaku is Zero? Season 3 could address these issues.

If Lelouch is dead, it could show us what plans he had in mind to keep the peace going (like Lelouch still controlling things and playing people like chess from beyond the grave, I think that would be amazing). If he’s alive, he could come back and see what he did wrong and try to amend it, maybe with another mountain of bodies, lol.

His death was a great way to end the series– tyrant dies, world peace! But even if the series ends, the story, the world, keeps going. I’d be interested to know what happens in Lelouch’s new world, and I think the writers can pull it off and surprise us.

Edit: You know what? I know what Season 3 is going to be about. The big reveal will be that Pizza Hut was controlling everything THE ENTIRE TIME.

There are so many moments in this fic where the prose just takes away your breath because it rolls off so smoothly like a poem in a riverbank. The author has captured the exquisite burn of mutual pining between Victor and Yuuri, and the little worldbuilding details of their respective countries are only the icing on the delicately constructed cake that is this fic.

YOI Fic Rec ROUND TWO

Hi friends. I put out a fic rec list a while back, and since then I’ve read a lot more, cried a lot more, laughed a lot more. So here’s another fic rec list for YOI! Most of these are different authors, in an attempt to spread the love. 

As before, it goes fewer bookmarks -> more bookmarks, in a very blatant attempt to give exposure.

THE SECOND LIST:

Resting pulse by cafecliche: I’m crying all the time, when I read this fic. It’s amusing and witty, while capturing the Victuuri characterizations perfectly, and also THERE IS PINING. This author’s other fic also address anxiety beautifully, so go forth. Go read all of the cafecliche. Do it for your wellbeing.

Kiss, You’re On Camera by Ashida: THIS IS SO SWEET. They’re at a baseball game, and Yuuri’s neighboring seat gets taken by an attractive stranger. God, it’s cute. Please check it out.

Stay the Night by Shadow_sensei: Your heart won’t be ready for the twist at the end of this. You could never be ready. This story is haunting and I mean that pun in all the best ways—it’s also got a beautiful dreamlike, fairytale (more like scary story) feel to most of it.

Shall We Skate (Through Time) by counterheist: counterheist has written MANY quality fics (also see BREAKING NEWS: Local Man Would Like to Date Other Local Man), most of which have me laughing. God, counterheist is great. This time travel AU also INVOLVES PHICHIT, my man, deals with consequences and, finally, provides great plot.

Yuri Plisetsky Saves the (Figure Skating) World by Dawn on ICE (Dawn_Blossom): Yuri Plisetsky’s interpretation of Viktor running off to “coach” Yuuri. It’s so canon compliant it HURTS—like hurts your stomach, because you’ll be laughing. Also the author is a darling.

A Heart of Paper Cranes by missmichellebelle: Besides being a fantastic human being, this author handles fluff, first time meetings, and anything your heart could desire with aplomb. I love this fic to pieces, and I love the sweet honesty of the Victuuri in it. *swoons*

Meet me halfway (in the future) by MissSpock:  I LOVE THIS FIC?? I love MissSpock, who I discovered and promptly blazed through all the fic of. This excellent time travel fic explores jealousy in a ironic but honest way.

Nuclear Hearts Club by butterbeerbitch:  The best of mutual pining and high school. I think I recc’d butterbeerbitch on my last list too, but I need you to listen to me. This fic has beautiful musings on childhood, which are giving me nostalgia in ways nothing else I’ve read has, and it is heartbreakingly gorgeous. This is poetry, it is prose, I cannot believe this is a real human being writing this. While they have stunning imagery, they also aren’t scared to make gross, hilarious comparisons. Please read this. Do it for me.

Like a design by jinlian: Canon-verse, and very sweet and humorous.

Life Unwoven by rougeandtonic:  TIME TRAVEL AU. WHERE YUURI TIME TRAVELS… BOTH WAYS. You get double the Victuuri, all of the pining, all of the miscommunication being healed, and just… oh. I love this fic. I think about it constantly. I’ve totally already screamed a lot about rougeandtonic on my Tumblr, but I. Do Not. Care. Like, this author probably hates me at this point, but I can’t help it.  Please read their work: kokoro no kaze is another of my favorites.

Lullaby of Birdland by Orchids_and_Fictional_Cities: Yuuri is a figure skater and Viktor is a jazz pianist. It doesn’t hesitate to deal with heavy topics, and the author knows. Their. Jazz. I’m drooling over this fic as we speak. Listen. I don’t understand how this has only 142 bookmarks at 7 chapters. I DON’T UNDERSTAND.

Meet Me by the River by c0rnfl0wer: do you want Slavic mythology and traditions handled masterfully and presented along with high quality love and pining? Then read this fic! Also, check out c0rnfl0wer’s other works, I can’t imagine how much research and effort he puts into his writing.

The Way to a Man’s Heart is Through His Stomach by futuresoon: I can’t figure this mystery fic out for the life of me. IT DOESN’T MATTER. Do you like mythical creatures? Do you like mysterious and handsome men? Do you like food? Check this out. This quirky, supernatural fic leaves you curious, and ironically hungry for more. Might be on a hiatus, as a warning, but word on the street is that it’s not abandoned.

I see the universe in your eyes by fangirlandiknowit: Oh god. From Yuuri’s POV, and it’s so descriptive, so emotional. This was written a while back, but I just discovered it and it is quality.

(offer me) that Deathless Death by melonbug: VIKTOR IS DEATH in this beautiful and moving fic that’s wrapped up in mystery and prose, but which I want to continue reading forever. There’s some phenomenal life observations in here, too.

Shut up and let me hold you by shysweetthing: I’ll never be over shysweething’s writing. I KNOW I recc’d this author on the last list, but you have to understand that it has brilliant dialogue, clearly understands YOI and episodes 11 and 12, and presents what was absent/only hinted at from them in a way that simultaneously soothes and breaks your heart.

These Frozen Nights by viciously: GEEZ so Yuuri can see ghosts, and Viktor doesn’t know… This fic is just ethereal and shocking, but still domestic and the Victuuri is sweet.

Taking the long way home by thankyouforexisting: Vicchan doesn’t die (so you already know this is gonna be good) and Yuuri doesn’t get drunk, so this fic explores how things change. It’s just… lovely. The dialogue is hilarious and magnificent, the AU is a great idea, and I’m loving this slow build.  NO, THANK YOU for existing, thankyouforexisting.

cover story by fan_nerd: Every frickin time I think back to my pre-AO3 account days, I remember a great fic and have to search for it. Every time I do, IT IS BY FAN_NERD. I love fan_nerd. This is a roommates AU, and is top notch.

Just Like a Stranger With the Weeds in Your Heart by MooseFeels: This ABO fic is just. Just. I tend to obsess over rhythm in my writing, and this fic has rhythm in excess. It just slides smoothly into your head, and astounds you.

Prove Me Wrong by homsantoft (tofsla): I started reading this and thought, oh, another soulmate AU, it could be decent. BUT I WAS A FOOL. This is not any old soulmate fic—it is beautifully handled, and I am unworthy of this and the one other fic by this author for YOI. PLEASE READ IT.

America goals by magnetic wave: Phichit is probably my favorite YOI character that isn’t Viktor or Yuuri, and this fic captures him so well. It also is a fic where you can see a perfect Phichit and Yuuri dynamic, without having to rely on Victuuri at all. I am in love.

Singularity by springsoldier (ladydaredevil):  I think I also recc’d this author on the last list. Do you care? I don’t care. You have to see this. It’s a STAR WARS AU. It’s so understated, and glorious, and hilarious. The Yurio is excellent, and the storyline is handled realistically. Finally, a Star Wars fic that shows you how a good Jedi deals with love.

A Lesson in Wanting by awesometinyhumanbeing:  I AM FANNING MYSELF. I love this fic! I love the trope of being in love with someone you’re married to, but being unable to deal with it. Reading the lines here just make me want to cry, and by the time things are finally resolved you will be incredibly invested in their happy ending.

Butt Stuff by Plumpie:  Yuuri gets an invasive… butt procedure. And Viktor is his nurse. Every moment in this is amusing.

At Home by SuggestiveScribe: SuggestiveScribe is pretty prolific, or was back a few months ago, and all of their works are breathtaking. Please check them out. This one’s fluffy, domestic despite the travel, and fun.

Katsuki Yuuri: Ascended Fanboy by Defiant-Dreams (DefiantDreams):  I’M LAUGHING SO HARD. Yuuri is a commentator, Viktor is still a skater, and everyone is exposed to their mutual and very obvious crushes in this great comedy.

Blackbird by sixpences: If you read nothing else I’ve recced to you but you still read this fic, I will be happy. This extremely well thought-out and planned fic showcases Yuuri and Viktor as intelligence operatives during WWII and the Cold War, and is brilliant in its complex portrayal of the issues at the time. Also, they’re ridiculously cute together even in heartbreaking circumstances. There is homophobia in-universe, but the handling of it is sublime and it’s there for a reason. I JUST UM. DEEP BREATHS EVERYBODY. THIS FIC IS SO GOOD.

Aria: Stammi Vicino, Non Te Ne Andare by exile_wrath:  Okay so listen. I am a very sensitive kid. This fic made me have a LOT OF FEELINGS, and is sublime. I will say there is definitely some violence, but it’s handled as well as this author handles everything, and the story as a whole transports you to this whole other Beauty-And-The-Beast but darker world! It’s very imaginative.

Constellations (Things You Left Unsaid) by DasWarSchonKaputt: I love Yuuko, and anytime she shows up in this fic I scream. This fic is just hilarious and deals with Yuuri’s feelings of inadequacy quite well. A+ role reversal AU!

Take Hold by Lavender Prose: Have I ever mentioned that I’m a complete sucker for soulmate AUs? I am, and this one is stunning and thorough in its worldbuilding. Also, check out the author’s tumblr for short but effective drabbles.

Kings in Couture by slightlied: I think a lot of people have also heard of this one, but I don’t care. The first two chapters are excellent, and accompanying drabbles for this universe can be found on the author’s tumblr, and they are also engaging. Just visit the author’s tumblr—it’s a lot of quality content of all kinds, and she’s bursting with ideas.

Now When Arrows Don’t Penetrate, Cupid Grabs the Pistol by ken_ichijjouji (dommific): AHAHAHA this fic, it’s funny. Also, it stars Phichit and almost every possible couple in YOI, so you know it’s going to be an exciting ride!

Worthwhile by surveycorpsjean: People like to watch Viktor suffer, but it’s always from pining. This fic handles the concept that Viktor can have major insecurities and struggles too, showing through heart-rending metaphor. And of course, it shows that Viktor can still deal with these things while having and deserving a loving relationship. Ah, homophobia warning here, but it’s a fic dealing with a lot of real world issues.

Twenty-Five Hours by 0lizzybennet0: Listen here. This is my favorite identity reveal fic. Somehow this author takes a plane ride (normally a terrible experience for all) and makes it into a rollercoaster of good times and cuddles and wrenching revelations. I love this Viktor, and this Yuuri, and the pacing is just right, as well as the Viktor/Yurio dynamic.

Beside the Dancing Sea by lily_winterwood and MapleTreeway: probably a fic that everybody knows, but it’s so well planned and such a great take on selkies that I can’t help but recommend it. There’s actual poetry in here, folks, as well as great prose—dream scenes, sweet romantic getaways in bays, CUTE SEALS. And, for a time, a mystery! Just… read this fic, if you’ve somehow missed it.

Centripetal force by braveten: Braveten is pretty well known, so you’re probably like “kiaronna why are you showing us this, of course we all know this fic” but this is my FAVORITE OF HER FICS and it’s going to get recommended, dang it. If you somehow missed this adorable masterpiece and like college fic, check it out. One of the chapters also made me hide in a bathroom for a while to deal with my freakout about emotions.

 Unfortunately, because of life, I haven’t had as much time to explore the tag... or much time in general. so if you’re one of the works I love but I missed you, I’m sorry!

Retirement!AU by @skygemspeaks a short YOI prompt that went all around tumblr. It’s about the possibility of Viktuuri retiring, going to get a degree, and their classmate discovering that they’re famous. It’s reaaaaally sweet.

When Googling Your Friend Gets Weird by @adrianners A lot of fic has resulted of the prompt above by SkyGem, but this one is my favorite i thing, it develops it very well !

On Our Love by @LiaoftheDawn Ok so this one is tagged as Mature cause there is sex implied, but there is no hard depiction, so i chosed to put it here, so, it’s up to you. It’s angst with happy ending (best tag ever) and it crushed me well.

Like a Fairytale by @lucycamui wich is a Cinderella!AU (i’m so weak to Cinderella’s story it’s a shame) very fluffy and lovely and well writen. Special thanks for Godperson!Phichit, that made my night.

New Beginnings and In Regards to Trust : Valediction by @phisen wich are following one another. These one also are rated M but i don’t remember sex : there may be, but that’s not what makes them memorable for me. It’s about Yuuri moving to Russia and how the settling, the insecurities (wink wink) of the couple are worked out. Two of the first fanfics i’ve read in the fandom, i love this author, it’s really (a little bit) angsty with fluff.

Until My Feet Bleed & My Heart Aches (also known as umfb&mha) by the wonderful and queen of us all @kazliin I’M SO EAGER FOR YOU TWO TO READ THIS ONE OMG. This fanfic sets place in a Rival!AU which means that, well, there rivals (Yuuri hating Viktor to sum it up) and it’s really a really really famous fanfic in the fandom and it has driven me mad at least as much as YOI itself. The smut is character driven and is entirely part of the story and the character developpement, it’s crazy, i just can’t stop reading this fic or everything that revolves around, i’m obsessed, god help me (i may want somedy to talk about this with ?) (i read it in like 48h ?) (this is really an obsession) (there is a fanbase just for this fic) (god help me)

You Can’t Plan for Everything by @contentwhatcontent Ok so this one is really implying a lot of sex, starting really around chapter 20. It’s set in the OmegaVerse (i’ll explain to you girls if you don’t know what it is, i don’t really know how far you are in the fanfic thing), it’s reaaaaaaal slowburn with looooots of feels and i kind of really loves it ?

When you were young by again the great @phisen and OMG THIS FIC MADE ME CRY THE FUCK OUT OF MYSELF O.M.G. This is really angsty. There is one sex scene which is not really what the fic is about. It’s about 40yo-Separeted!Viktuuri, and they meet again by accident and how this goes through. I really cried the fuck but O.M.G. this is sooooooo good, such a good story, so well writen. Must read, unless you don’t want to be feeling like shit because of a story. (i personnally love it, don’t judge me.)

After Everyone Else by @dance_across THE BEST THREESOME I’VE READ SO FAR OMG i didn’t know i needed this until i read it and now my head is full of headcanons over it. It’s really fluffy/sexy/with feels and i just love it. Threesome Viktuuri + Chris.

Call Everything on the Ice by @shysweetthing this one is reaaaaally fluffy. It’s a bit of angst with a happy ending (still the best tag), it’s canon-divergent with Viktor learning Japanese and not knowing how to tell Yuuri. I love it ! The epilogue is the sweetest of things.

Unexpected by @alexwspark I reaaaally love this one, i started reading before the last chapters were released. I usually sum it up as “everything is the same but slightly different”. There’s also angst with it, cause you know, i can’t leave without a good amount of angst.

Growing up, growing in, by @Muspell this one is OtaYuri. It’s about Yurio kind of acknowledging a beginning of feelings for Otabek, not knowing how to deal with it. It’s very young-respectful, there is a bit of a sex-situation to some point, but treats about the age-gap relationships. I really found it good, i followed the update when the story wasn’t completed yet. There’s Mila and Viktuuri being sweethearts also.

The Fundamentals of Caring by @actualyuuri omg i liked this one so much ! It’s domestic pre-relationship sick!Yuuri with Viktor caring (ok it’s toothrooting fluff), and then the second chapter is more or less the smut part. It’s veeeery fluffy. 

Next Level : Nights After Dreams by @RipVanGabriel so this one is the only one so far on FF.net and not Ao3. And, well. I’ve started reading this fanfic at it’s very beginning. It’s regularly updated. It’s actually around 300k word and always growing. It’s Viktuuri life after the serie, and it goes far ! There are several arcs, especially with Viktor’s family. There’s an arc with the wedding. An arc entirely dedicated to Yurio. It’s quite complete actually, and even if i’m always a bit “mhm, where were we” at each new update, there is always something new to read. It’s actually very... going with the post-canon, but it’s a way to continue the story, if you like to feed on some kind of story. I quite like this one, and keeping track of it !

1. What fandom(s) do you read?

At the moment, mostly just Yuri!!! On ICE, though I recently read everything I could get my hands on from the Achilles/Patroclus tag on Ao3. It’s crazy to me that YoI alone can take up so much of my free time. I don’t think I’ve ever been a part of such an active fandom whose content I’m impressed by on a regular basis. As someone who became used to finding one relatively good story from a specific fandom every few years, it’s a Dream Come True.

2. Name a type of fic that you wish there was more of.

My guilty pleasure’s probably royalty-based AUs, so probably those. kazliin’s fake historical royalty AU from her Rivals universe reignited my love for them, and it’s not even a real story iajokdlsdatrtedqq. If anyone has any recs, I’d lovelovelove to read them!

I think the most recent ones I’ve read (and love!) are A Lesson in Wanting by @awesometinyhumanbeing and The Tsesarevich lives! (Anastasia AU) by mtothedestiel. Oh, and the Princess Diary 2 prompts by @omgkatsudonplease. I just [clenches fist] love King Viktor and his head of security.
