It was well into the night by the time we were all brought before the assembled group of clan mothers, who were waiting in Clanmother Aiq-dra’s tent. It was a tent I knew well from my meetings with her the last journey.

We came and sat before the five clanmothers. They all sat upon fine cushions, looking us over closely as we took our places in a half circle across from them. 

Tea was brought out as part of our welcome. The brightly colored lamps and lanterns gave a cheerful appearance to the inside of the tent, but there was little mirth to be had. This was business. And the most important meeting was always the initial impression. Introductions can make or break negotiations. It can start the formation of a bond, or immediately set people against one another.

Clanmother Aiq-dra then introduced herself and the other clanmothers. There was M'Ana, who looked youngest of the clanmothers assembled. Her height and build were very similar to Qau-dar’s. Despite an appearance of youth, she appeared as proud or prouder than the others. I get the impression that her clan is either the most well resourced or the largest.

Next was Haahin-dra, perhaps the eldesst, it is hard to tell with some body types of Khajiit, yet the deep set wrinkles on her face pointed to a women with much experience in moth joy and hardship. Her body type was clearly the same as that of S’Fair, an Ohmes. I was glad to have warned Tel beforehand that there were Khajiit that had more mer-like features. Not only would it keep them from potentially offending S’Fair, it would be good for Tel not to make a mistake with Haahin-dra.

There was Biba-daro, less mer-like in her body type than if she were Ohmes, and a bit slighter. Her clothing slightly less extravagant than the other clanmothers. Yet there was something lurking in her wrinkles that makes me wonder if she has had a lot of fun in her life, or if there’s just a natural curl to the corners of her mouth.

Finally, was Zababi-daro. She was by far the largest of the clanmothers. Larger and broader in size than a Nord or an Altmer. She was a very imposing figure, even in the group of already imposing figures. Besides Aiq-dra, I most fear her.

I was then asked to introduce myself and whether or not my clan was still onboard for our previous agreement. There was also the question as to whether I had been given the power of decision making on behalf of my clan in this instance.

I said that I had returned and spoken with the head of my clan and the Council of elders and we had talked about the full terms of what my clan should like to see. Then I had been given permission to speak on our clan’s behalf to present offers for any that might be interested in a peace between our peoples.

Then I thanked all the clanmothers for taking the time away from the important affairs of their clans and the celebrations to speak with me about this affair. That I was so grateful for their time and hospitality.

Not much was said in answer to this, other than to ask that I introduce those who had traveled along with me. I was also asked if I would vouch for the actions and words of the various members who had traveled with us.

Qau-dar had warned me that to vouch for someone was to accept the punishment for their misdeeds. But beyond that, the punishment would be harsher for me than it would be for them on their own, because it would also be punishment for me having given reason for the clan to trust them and then my not keeping them in line.

I decided to start with the easiest introductions first.

Sildras.

Having brought my son could easily help to show my faith in the safety the clans would provide, as well as in my openness towards Khajiit culture and customs. No doubt many had already seen Sildras playing with the other children in Clanmother Aiq-dra’s clan.

Sildras gave a small, formal bow to them and introduced himself by name in Ta’agra. No doubt it was Khes’ doing that he should know how to do so.

Next I gestured to Avon. I introduced Avon as being close as a brother to me. I emphatically stated that I would vouch for him, for I trusted him with my life.

Clanmother Zababi-daro asked, well, more demanded than asked, if Avon and Tel were both a part of my clan.

I said that Avon was a part of my clan. We were both born and raised together in the clan like brothers. That we had spent most of our lives together and knew each other as well as we knew ourselves.

Then I introduced Tel, saying that Tel was a warrior who I had met during my travels back to Morrowind and that we had helped to save one another several times and that, although we were not of the same clan, that we owed one another a life debt.

There was some murmuring of reluctant acceptance of this explanation before I was asked why someone not of my clan would be a part of this.

Thinking of a fast way to soften the situation beyond just a life debt, in case that really was not a good enough reason, I stated that while we were of different clans, the heads of our clans were siblings. That our clans shared so many of the same values and that like the clans here shared members, so too did Tel and my clans.

Most of the clanmothers stayed silent on that matter, seeming to accept it. Though they were not entirely happy either. I was starting to wonder if I was loosing control of the negotiations when the next topic was brought forth.

Why had my party changed? Suddenly I became aware that perhaps I had underestimated the importance of the same members returning from the initial meeting. There would be an acknowledgement of who those people were and a degree of trust from nothing bad occurring. I half kicked myself for not pressing Watches-By-Day and Speaks-Too-Soon harder on their accompaniment.

But I was not going to just let the potential anger spread in the air. There were plenty of truths that could be slotted into an explanation.

I mentioned that not long after we had left the clan, we had lost the life of one of our companions. That it had weighed heavy upon his mind and so he had asked everyone before departing if they would feel safe going forward once more. One had said she could not. Others were called away to duties for the clan.

I apologized emphatically for not having the same party as a result.

Eyebrows were raised, but nothing was said further.

So I continued the introductions. I went to Heathre next, stating she was a warrior who helped our clan, as well as a gifted musician and storyteller.

I did not have a chance to attempt to vouch for her, however, for she gave herself an introduction in Ta’agra and said she could vouch for herself.

I was rather impressed. Besides, it would look good for me to have brought a Khajiit along who could speak honestly about her experiences in Morrowind. I know she was not a slave, so that will help. And if what she told me before was true, she rather enjoys life in Mournhold. That may be rather useful for our negotiations.

Finally, I introduced Luz. I mentioned that he, too, worked with the warriors aiding our clan. I mentioned that he was a skilled protector and healer I had hired to help keep everyone safe. I started how much my heart hurt for losing a person in my charge before and that I did not want anyone to ever suffer on my watch and to be a responsible leader, I knew I needed every chance to keep those under my charge safe and healthy. That I would certainly vouch for Luz, who has already helped to heal Heathre after we had been set upon by bandits.

Further, I offered that, should there come a need at any point while we were here, for the clan to make use of the healing capabilities of both Avon and Luz.

Once more I thanked the clanmothers for all their kindness in hearing what I had to say and for meeting with my companions and I. I bowed to each of them and thanked them all for their hospitality.

I would normally have offered gifts at this point, but Qau-dar warned me not to do so until later, not until other had given me something concrete first. It is so hard not to allow others to partake of all the many goods I have brought along for the express purpose of trade and showing the types of items that House Indoril has to offer.

I shall simply have to be patient. I am waiting now for the clanmothers to call me back. Or at least for Clanmother Aiq-dra to call for me to explain myself, or perhaps to warn me of things once more.

And yet, it simply has not happened. It is too soon, I know this. Yet I fear what discussions might lead to.

I think I shall present some gifts from my travels to Qau-dar’s spouses. Perhaps to his immediate family as well. There is so much they gave me before that I feel should be repaid. I had so little to offer before compared to now. And I know it is a matter of time before the clan gets curious as to what is in the caravan and they start to take items they like. I should like to make sure a few things go to specific people first.

I will ask Qau-dar. I cannot risk offending anyone so soon.

Also I would be interested in your regular routine actually because that's just the type of person I am (and I could barely justify the $40 for the anastasia glow kit I have before realizing I'd use it often, at $100 that's just.....I don't have a good way to finish that thought.)

Ok, you asked for it, beware of the length of this response. This is my regular makeup routine, summarized somewhat so that it doesn’t turn into an unasked for tutorial. I’ll do it in order of application because otherwise I’ll make a mess and forget things. 

1) Foundation: I use BB Cream for this, because a) it’s drugstore available, b) I’m not comfortable with super full coverage foundation for long periods of time, c) I can also use it as primer, for the use I give to my make up it’s good enough, and saves me money. I use a pear-shaped make up sponge for application (a drugstore one, beauty blender who??). 

2) Concealer: I use cream concealer, I like a Latin American brand called Natura for my concealer but I’m currently using Avon because it was a gift and times are hard. It’s a thicker formula than my foundation which serves its purpose. I use a drop-shaped make up sponge for application. I’m cheap with my sponges but I do separate my foundation and concealer sponges, at least. 

3) Primer: I use the BB Cream again because budget. I mean, the one I use works fine for my make up purposes, if I were to expose my make up to a lot of heat or stage lights or things like that, this wouldn’t fly, but for me it works. 

4) Powder foundation: I set my powder for baking at this point, I don’t spread it until I’m totally done. For baking, I apply with a flat applicator. I also use an Avon one currently because it’s a truth universally acknowledged that every Latin American person has someone in their family/neighborhood who sells Avon. Or maybe it’s just here, idk. 

5) Eyeshadow: I use normally between 6 and 7 shades of eyeshadow for a regular make up. I am not picky with my palettes because money but I do stay on neutral colors for regular make up days, though shades vary depending on night or day and whatnot. I won’t describe the application because this isn’t a tutorial but it’s basically 1 setting/lid shade, 3 contour shades, 2 highlight shades, 1 extra lid color sometimes. I normally use 5 or 6 different brushes for this. 

6) Liner: Black. Gel. Liner. I am unable to depart from it, I’ve used other things but I’m true to my heart and it belongs with the black gel liner. I use a small flat brush for it. Winged liner is an art. 

7) Brows: I don’t have brow gel because it’s a very extra expense for me, I have a blend of 2 shadows I like to use for brows with an angled brush, I’ve found they work fine for me because of their formula which is on the creamy side. 

8) Mascara: I normally use 3 different mascaras, but I’m currently down to 2 because I haven’t been able to replace one that got discontinued. I don’t use them all in the same spots and for the same things, just to clarify, one is for length (on ends), one for volume (on roots), one for curling (on the outer corner). Now I’m just using volume and curling until I find a good replacement for the other one, may it rest in peace. 

9) Powder Foundation (reprise): I brush off the excess powder from baking and spread through to set with a foundation brush. I don’t contour or highlight my face for my regular routine (I do it for character makeup, though). 

10) Lips: the ultimate choice. It depends on formula and color for me, and that depends sometimes on the context of where I’m going/for how long or just on me feeling like it. I tend to use matte formulas for long periods of time, satin formulas for medium-length, cream formulas for not that long.

I... I struggle to put words down this morning. 

I have not yet slept. My mind is racing so fast. 

The noble I was set to meet with was no ordinary mer. It was Nabine, in disguise.

Apparently she had come to speak with me, but Mama Mags would have nothing without an appointment and told Nabine that was the only way in which we could meet.

I do not begrudge Mama Mags for her discretion. Apparently Nabine and I both were given the same lines about no customer information disclosed, even when Nabine and I were clearly both aware of the other and attempting to meet.

If it was purely money, I would have been happy to deal with it at any cost. But Mama Mags is a woman of principals and she sticks to them, treating everyone equally in this regard. I admire that, even if it made this whole situation entirely jarring.

I came into the room, set up food and drink, candles and incense, made sure the bed and couches were prepared, had a chest full of possible tools available, my lute tuned and ready, I was bathed and perfumed.

In walks this noble, the aforementioned veil in place, two of the Den’s finest workers in tow, one on each arm, as she was led to the room.

I bowed, introduced myself, and thanked her for her patronage. Then when I asked what services she would like me to provide, since I was not informed ahead of time, I stood in silence, as she did not move from where the door had been closed behind her.

I switched to Bosmeris, on the off chance that she did not speak common.

She shook her head and turned around to remove the veil and set it aside. 

When she turned back, my heart stopped. I ceased breathing. 

There was Nabine, in the flesh, mere steps away from me. 

I did not know what to do. I wished to pull her into my arms and kiss her and know that she was alright. Yet I did not dare move. What if she were angry? What if she were sad. And further, this meeting was to be on her terms.

I stay, rooted to the ground.

We both just stared at one another for a moment. Each of us opening our mouths to speak, only to close them once again.

It was clearly as difficult a conversation for her as it was for me. It took us overly long to do more than just stumble through greetings and the most basic of conversation topics. I had to let her be the one to decide, I said as much. And yet, there was so much I wanted to say. I worried that her holding back was the result of her keeping back feelings of anger or sadness.

I saw she was nervous, so I poured us a couple glasses of fine whiskey. That seemed to help us both. We talked about how difficult it was to get Mama Mags to allow us to speak, when she had so clearly been trying to set us back together.

To be honest, I don’t think any would believe we were the same pair who snuck into Jarl’s chambers in Dragonsreach and used his bedroom as our own while he was busy with courtly duties just down the stairs. Or that we were the pair that started the orgy at the College in Winterhold in the Arch Mage’s quarters. And certainly none would believe we were the pair of traveling performers that scandalized the gentry in Windhelm when our masked performance of a famous Nord  epic turned into a more explicit version, Nabine playing the role of Bhreni Hard Axe and I played the part of the bear. Of course, that was the version of the story that was popular at all of the taverns, so I’m not sure why we were chased by the guard for indecency. Not that they caught us. Nabine is too nimble and acrobatic, and I have the skills I learned from my House.

To be standing there as two shy children asking one another for their first dance at the ball, well it seems disappointing. As though all those stories were nothing more than tales. 

I asked her if it would be alright if I shared with her about what I had been doing since we had parted. Nothing about my feelings, just a summary of events. She smiled, and I hadn’t even know how much it pained me that I had not seen that smile in so long. I kept things brief. Told her of my travels, meeting Qau-dar and Speaks-Too-Soon, of the trouble in Whiterun that lead to meeting Sera Rialas and Lilandril and the shop children, of my search for Qau-dar, of running into Avon and learning what was happening at home, of my trip back to Mournhold, all the events with Urtisa and meeting Sildras, of the loss of Ervis, of gaining Mephala’s blessing at the Summoning Day celebration, of my troubles with Uncle, of my near execution, of being asked to journey to Elsweyr and being saddles with Lilandril as a guide. I spoke of the pain of seeing Bruma as it was overrun by daedra, of my time among both clans, including Qau-dar’s, of Coldharbor, and of coming to the Den.

Nabine told me that she stayed for a while with the cult before returning to Valenwood to raise Kuna. She mentioned that her family had been glad to have her back. That her father had spent a lot of time helping to watch Kuna while Nabine went out to hunt. She told me of a short trip she had made to the Alik’r city of Bergama to escort her cousin who was looking for some rare books that had been stolen from one of their spinners, how she had been taken by pair of twins at the inn there and had spent most of the time she was in the city engaged in their mutual company. She told me how, shortly after her return to Valenwood, she discovered that she was once again with child. That she thought it would be good for Kuna to have a sibling to play with. She had known that Kuna was facing the discrimination of other Bosmer for having red eyes and a cool color to her skin, so she thought if both children could support one another, it might make their lives easier. 

I asked Nabine about whether or not Kuna was my child. She told me that she could not say with total certainty, but that I was the only Dunmer she had laid with around the time that Kuna must have been conceived. I apologized again for not being there. Nabine laughed and told me it was just like me to be gone the only time she really needed me. It was a joke, but it stung. She knew it the second it had left her mouth.

She reached forward to assure me and I pulled back. I saw that flash of pain and guilt in her eyes. I explained that it was because of my blessing of Mephala’s. That I did not wish to see anything she was not ready for me to see. That I did not want to take without permission what was her private life.

She laughed at me, more warmly this time, and reached forward again. I did not move, save to turn my palm upward to take her hand. She hesitated a moment before she actually took my hand. 

I did not see any death, which I know there would have been much of since we last were together. I had worried about seeing from the point of view of any person that she had decided to kill. To see her eat them.

Yet, my fears were unwarranted. What I saw instead, was related to her time in the cult. A sense of betrayal. Her feelings of guilt as she made the decision to leave them, so shortly after she had decided to make it her future. The anger that they were only using her to gain the secret practices of her people.The conviction of knowing that staying true to Y’ffre was the only path for her. She took her vengeance upon those in the cult that had sought to pry from her the ways of her people that were not meant for those who were unfaithful. She allowed them to learn what they wanted, but only by it happening to them firsthand. 

I saw only the anger and bloodshed. And when it was done, the anger and sadness, the sense of loss. She had, more than anything else, not wanted me to see this. To know that it had all been for naught. I would have felt the same. I know she wanted to protect my heart. For that, I am grateful. Yet Mephala’s gift does not pick and choose what is better for us to know. 

I wrapped my arms around Nabine, holding her close, saying how sorry I was for what had happened to her. That I was sorry I had not stayed around Markarth longer, just in case things went badly.

She laughed and flicked my ear like she used to when she thought I was being silly. It all just felt so right again, so comfortable.

We pulled away and looked at one another. Then we both pulled away. How could we not? We both have obligations now that we must fulfill.

Nabine asked me if I would be staying much longer. 

I told her that it was up to my guide. That I was in need of returning to Morrowind to report my progress so I could be back in time to meet with the clan in spring, which my resources renewed. 

She nodded solemnly and said that she understood, she had obligations to her family.

I had to hold back tears. That look in her eyes was heartbreaking. She stroked my hair, the way she did when I would awaken from Nocturnal’s menacing. And then I did cry. 

How long has it been since I have come to tears? I cannot recall. Perhaps only at the loss of Ervis.

Nabine scolded me for making her come close to crying herself and she kissed my cheek. I held her in an embrace so tightly, my hands started to lose feeling.

We talked long about the future. We acknowledged that for each of us, our feelings had not changed. Yet, our situations were no longer compatible. We held ourselves back. If we started to act as we once had, surely it would be twice as hard to let go again. We only just found each other again. And to let the heart have hope when I do not know how long I will live. If not from the judgement of my House, than from the Prince of Domination holding my soul captive. 

We talked until dawn of all the things we wished we could do. Of the futures we wished we could have.

A knock on the door came and reminded us that our time was nearly spent. We spent the last few moments just hugging. 

And now what? Am I just expected to continue as though nothing has passed? As though my life seems to have been organized by Sheogroath’s personal touch?

I told Mama that I would work tonight, though I am unsure if I can. I thought I could sleep from morning to afternoon and feel fine, but I’ve gotten no rest. I wish I could ask Qau-dar to join me, but I know that he has little Khes to care for. I do not want to impact her enjoyment of the day, nor to interrupt her education. And there is no one else I would trust to go to right now. 

I am to begin working in less than an hour if I do. What will I do? Just go through the motions as though my mind were in no turmoil?
