I saw that in your post tags you don't like some of the interpretations that Master fans have, could you point some out? I agree and I'd like to hear your thoughts on it!!

I talked about some common ones here, but there are certainly more I could go into. Sometimes it’s not one thing in particular, just a general vibe. Like, the current vibe in the Master fandom is not at all to my tastes, which is one of the reasons I’ve stopped going into the tags much. Not to say it’s objectively bad or anything---my interpretations and preferences are no more valid than anyone else’s---so I’m a bit hesitant to be too critical here because I don’t want to make anyone feel bad. If you’re having fun, keep doing what you’re doing!

That said...

I mean, obviously, part of the problem is that I don’t agree with how the writers themselves interpreted the Master in the case of Simm and Dhawan, and their take impacts the fandom perception. But often I don’t think the fan perception is even accurate to those versions of the character. There’s a pretty rose-tinted, softened interpretation that I see a lot. People ignore their worst qualities or wave them aside by saying they’re just a result of trauma and the Master isn’t really responsible. But like, trauma cannot justify genocide. At best it might explain it.

I know a big factor is that Simm and Dhawan are hot (well, so I’ve been told in Simm’s case, he was never my type), and there’s nothing wrong with being into them for that reason. Do you think I watch Planet of Fire for the plot? But that doesn’t change the fact that the Master is an awful person. If you want them to be soft and idealised, you can write all the AUs you want, but always remember that’s not who they are in canon. Dhawan in the show is not the sweet, tender, respectful guy he is in Master x Reader fics (those are another thing I don’t understand, because I can’t think of anything less appealing than inserting myself into a fanfic scenario, but these days people are very into them so have fun I guess). Smoothing over the Master’s flaws for the sake of a better fantasy is one thing, but I often see that interpretation spill over into meta and other aspects of fandom.

It ties into the “Koschei Oakdown” view of the Master’s past and the shift from Best Enemies to Thoschei (which, yes, are just two different names for the same relationship, but there’s definitely been a corresponding shift in interpretation). People want the Master to be, deep down, a hurt, frightened, innocent little boy who just needs a hug. They’re not. Which isn’t to say they haven’t had their share of trauma and issues, but fundamentally the reason they do what they do is because they’re selfish. Even if they’re lashing out due to trauma, it’s selfishness that makes them inflict that pain on other people. They're an adult who is entirely responsible for their own actions.

And they’re often cruel in ways which aren’t fun. You can laugh at them killing people with plastic couches or trying to find the right pun before they murder someone, but not at the bruises on Lucy Saxon’s face. I don’t think you should separate the enjoyably evil aspects of their character from the messier parts. This is why I also don’t like people trying to sanitise them by headcanoning that they would be against various real life injustices. Yes, it might be nice to think that they would murder racists and abusers and misogynists, but, um, historically they’ve been those things. I could only see them going that route post-Missy and, well, so much for that.

Also, I know this is just people being shippy, but I think the fandom focuses too much on how the Master’s actions revolve around the Doctor and not enough on their underlying motivations/core beliefs. A lot of what the Master does is tied to the Doctor---be it trying to get their attention, hurt them, save them, impress them, change them, etc.---but not everything, and you still have to ask why the Doctor is so important to them, especially after all this time. I think there are some very interesting answers that people should explore more.

I guess a lot of my issues boil down to not wanting the Master to be forced into a certain mould just because it’s more appealing. I’d rather try to approach them on their own terms. They’re nasty and complicated and that’s part of what I find interesting about them.

Anyway, I think I’ve spent enough time hammering in my No Fun Allowed sign. There’s room for multiple interpretations, and for actively choosing to re-imagine them for your own purposes, so do what makes you happy!

one of this things that annoys me so much about these righteous “fandom gatekeepers” is that what they’re getting so mad at is fiction. It’s not real life. I honestly find it really concerning that these people get so pressed over fictional characters

It bothers me that they can’t admit irl people who need redemption can be admirable too - that cuts out huge huge portions of human goodness and striving. There are a ton of “pure” people who have had lucky lives and never struggled who are pure but not really good in a hard won way. They’d crumple and go along with all kinds of shit if pressure was applied to them. They’re not good - they haven’t had to choose goodness they’re just lucky bishes. And there are folks like recovering addicts and alcoholics who have done terrible things while lost in the dark but are thoroughly, truly decent people because they work at it and have compassion for the darkness and weakness in others.

okay okay I just saw that you finished Wooing the Water Tribe and I haven't read it yet, I just wanted to say that this fic just made me feel... something. The way you portray Sokka and his love for Zuko is so raw and personal. I'd put this somewhere in my top 5 favorite fanfics, and trust me, that's out of A LOT. thank you so much for writing this, your work is amazing.
