Autumnature 2001 IDM / Leftfield / Abstract / Downtempo

The leaves are finally starting to change color up in my neck of the woods, so what better way to channel those chill vibes than with some organically abstract and crunchy electronic grooves from a little IDM-type label up in Burlington, Vermont called Autumn Records? Here we have their Autumnature comp, from 2001, which gathered a bunch of songs from a crop of artists from the US and Europe who were essential to the tiny bedroom-and-netlabel wave that took place at the turn of the millennium and followed in the footsteps of what acts like Aphex Twin and Autechre had managed to foster before them.

And if you're particularly familiar with this era of IDM and leftfield electronic abstractions, then the list of artists on here should look something like an all-star roster to you: Jet Jaguar, Lackluster, Hrvatski, Fizzarum, Kettel, Cex, Lexaunculpt...some real heavy hitters from this realm. And if you're not familiar with any of these names, then welcome aboard!

So, it's hard to pick a particular favorite from this set of tunes, but the opener, "Move Bed Here," by Colongib, who played a big role in another great New England label, Kracfive, from New Hampshire, is a pretty phenomenal and freewheeling tone-setter. Complex and glitchy rhythms with emotive, and rich, underlying synth melodies. And it has a wonderful change in tempo on the back half too, before climbing back up to its previously established more uptempo mode to finish.

And another total banger on here comes courtesy of Autumn's owner, Asterisk, who delivers "Sea Green and Cyan," which does a uniquely satisfying job of panning its soft, flute-like synth stabs between the left and right channels, before washing them away with a growing and layered tapestry of folky acoustic guitar 😌. Beautiful tune.

So, a good bunch of nifty and creative electronic tunes from the early 2000s here. Only 500 copies of the album were ever pressed, though, so a physical copy is probably not easy to come by.

Hello friends! I am gaining another year in a couple if weeks and I’d love to celebrate with all of you!

And since autumn is not only my birthday time but also my favorite season, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to boost/encourage some autumnal SPN fanworks with a little challenge!

When: October 1st through 10th

What: Boosting and creating SPN fanworks that take place in autumn or are autumn-themed in some way. Any kind of fanwork goes! Fic, art, graphic edits and manips, gifs, meta, poetry, filk music…you name it!

The work does not have to be created specifically for this event; old and new creations are welcome! All characters and ships are welcome so long as they don’t involve non-con, incest, or underage characters in sexual situations.

I will be boosting all work submitted to this event through the 10-day period and possibly throughout all of October.

.ೃ࿐ LIZA’S AUTUMNATURAL PARTY 🍂 DAY 2: PUMPKINS 🎃

First fill for Liza's autumnatural party!

All of these will likely be short since I am on a road trip/camping. I wrote this long hand while watching the sunrise and having a coffee and oatmeal with a peach fruit cup tossed in. I am currently sitting in the back seat of my car typing it up on my laptop and tethered to my phone so I can post. There are probably a ton of errors but I'm staring down <10% battery.

Day 1: family fun / hay ride (kinda filled for both?)

Dean liked to think he'd gotten pretty good at reading Cas over the years. Sure, some of the looks he gave him were inscrutable, and on anybody else -- but this one he knew. This was his "I don't understand the joke in this movie" expression, his face slightly scrunched up and head cocked ever-so-slightly. And maybe to anybody else it might look the same as any other look he got when he didn't understand but after years of movie nights, Dean could see that slight difference.

At this point, he kind of regretted suggesting that they watch Mel Brooks' entire filmography since the constant pausing and explaining was almost doubling the run time of every movie. But also, he regretted nothing about getting to spend more time like this, completely relaxed with no impending crises, just him and Cas and a movie. All of it was worth the dull ache at the back of his throat, the feeling of rightness even as he and Cas sat in separate recliners, a short and unbridgeable bridgeable distance between them. And Dean could just reach out and -- Dean paused the movie.

"I don't get it." Cas paused and Dean watched his eyebrows knit closer together for a moment before relaxing slightly as he turned to look at Dean. "Why is she asking Dr. Frankenstein to roll in the hay?"

Dean spared a moment to be proud of Cas using the same pronunciation of the name as in the movie before the awkwardness set in. Of course Cas would need the sex joke to be explained. But it wasn't totally awful because at least Cas knew what sex was, and he'd had sex for crying out loud so it really wasn't a foreign concept. But this was Cas, Cas who'd had sex with someone else. And thinking about that always brought uncomfortable thoughts and memories to the surface, and Cas was still waiting patiently for an answer even as Dean had a small internal meltdown.

"It's a uh --" he cleared his throat and swallowed, "it's a sex joke. A 'roll in the hay' is just a euphemism. For having sex."

"So the hay wagon is a joke?"

"Yeah, and Inga is the love interest."

"Okay." Dean was about to press play on the movie when Cas spoke up again. "There was a poster in town advertising hay rides. Is that also --"

"No." Dean interjected quickly before taking a breath and continuing. "No, that's an actual hay ride. They do them in the fall, you sit on hay bales in a wagon and a tractor pulls you along. Usually through fields or something." He shrugged, "or something. I've never been on one."

"That sounds interesting. I'm sure Jack would love to go on one."

"Yeah," Dean smiled softly, "I'm sure the kid would. Sammy and I are leaving on a hunt early tomorrow, you should take him while we're gone."

"I thought we could all go together - the four of us. We can wait until you're back. If you're not opposed to delaying your hunt, there's a harvest festival this weekend. It starts tomorrow."

"That sounds nice, Cas." He allowed himself to feel that low familiar warmth in his chest and the light squeeze to his heart before turning back to the TV, missing the soft look that Cas gave him as he pressed play.

Actually Dean "did you know there are six thousand kinds of tomatoes" Winchester is the one obsessed with going to the farmer's market. It's not something he does just to make Cas happy (though that is a delightful side effect).

Look me in the eyes and tell me this nerd doesn't drag his whole family to the pumpkin patch to pick out pie pumpkins as soon as a cool breeze blows by or on September 22nd, whichever happens first. Tell me he doesn't pick his own apples at the nearest orchard. Tell me he's not on a first-name basis with every stall owner at the farmer's market.

You can't!

It's cold out. Dean shoves the door open with his elbow and nearly falls through, but for the steading hand on his arm. A few leaves follow them in as the wind all but slams the door closed behind them.

The kitchen is warm and golden by contrast, the cheerful apple pattern on the curtains filtering the dying sunlight in shades of red and yellow.

Dean deposits his armful of bags on the counter, then turns and frees Cas's arms from his bags as well so he can replace them.

"Dean" Cas laughs as Dean slides his arms beneath his coat. "We have to put everything away."

"Mmm," Dean agrees, but he doesn't let Cas go. Rather, he nuzzles his cold nose into the space between Cas's scarf and his warm skin.

"Dean," Cas tries to sound stern, but he's smiling, embracing Dean back. He presses a kiss to his cold cheek, turned pink from the wind.

"It'll keep for a minute," Dean says, returning the quick peck on the cheek with one of his own, slower, more lingering. His eyelashes flutter against Cas's brow as he continues nuzzling, warm breath on Cas's ear making him shiver.

He turns and captures Dean's lips with his own, melting into his arms, the bags on the table forgotten for the moment.

The groceries do get put away. Eventually.
