It’s time to reveal my secret project! But I’ll start with some teasers! Remember when I told you all that I was making 2019 my year of collaboration? Well, I’ve teamed up with the extremely talented Toshiki of @openedjesus to collaborate on a super awesome automaton! It will be debuting at the @monsterpaloozaofficial Monster Museum this weekend April 12-14! I was pleasantly surprised that Toshiki had no problem making his piece move when we were working together in my studio! You guys are going to freak out when you see what we’ve made! Everyone has been so divided... I wanted to use art to bring people together. What better way than to create something with artists that I admire! #wip of Doorway Diva. This is the last piece in my collection of 6 new automata called Whimsical Windows! Come see them in action this Friday June 1, 8-11pm at the La Luz De Jesus Gallery (@laluzdejesus). The piece actually has a lot going on so this is just a small part. I sawed the jaws off of mink skulls. I gilded the fangs in 23k gold. I placed antique keys in their mouths (these are actually antiques not reproductions). In the next glass orb I wanted a small vertebrae spiral. Since the orb is so small I had to create this using the tiniest snake vertebrae I could find. Thank you to everyone who came out to @odditiesfleamarket to say hello and show support to me & @treiops. And thanks to @reginamariecohn & @ryanmatthewcohn for having us! I was nervous because our last vending event was in feb. of 2020 but this was a total success! I didn’t get a chance to take video or photos until half way through and you can see our booth is already kind of sparse when it started out jam packed full of stuff. I’m so in love these crazy hands I made! More #wip of Doorway Diva. I wanted the hands of this diva to be extremely elegant, so I took porcelain doll hands and added skunk claws (the diva has a skunk skull. I gilded the claws in gold. Then painted the Hands to match the bone color of the skull. I just love the way they turned out. This is the last piece in my collection of 6 new automata called Whimsical Windows! #wip of Moth Mother. I had a bunch of sunset moth wings so I decided to use those. First I picked enough matching wings to create 10 moths. Then I laminated the wings. I don’t usually do that in my work but the pieces in this new collection are not under glass domes. Acid etching artist Michael Newman created some brass butterfly filigree for me. I modified them and used the wing part over the moth wings. Then I took the brass butterfly body and added it to polished pieces of agate stone. I was surprised to see that I had stones in the general shape of a moth body. I added gold ribbon to connect the body and the wings. Finally I added a tiny nut so that I could fit the moths to my mechanical mechanism that would make them fly. To celebrate Mother’s Day I’m posting my most maternal Taxidermy Automaton, both figuratively and literally. I created Inner Kitten in 2017. Turn the sound on to hear its story. This elegant cat is no longer young but she is still beautiful and full of wisdom. Beneath her is a sentimental scene with glowing crystals that signify energy, a golden chalice full of divine fruit that symbolize sustenance, and a butterfly with wings that reflect the sky, representing self-awareness and rebirth. One fruit is partially open, exposing a tiny head with a face like the cat. It is a fresh but delicate version of herself, an embodiment of new life. The cat looks around to make sure it is safe. She then reveals the precious little kitten within her. It floats peacefully inside of its holographic rainbow womb. A womb that is a magical world protected by the power of the mother. *Inner Kitten is now part of a private collection. Materials: cat skull and paws, diaphonized still born kitten, weasel skull, gooseberry husks, chandelier crystals, morpho butterfly, 18k gold, garnet, sapphire, amethyst, rhodolite, and peridot.
