What is the Best Doctor Who Story Ever Told?
Hello everybody and welcome to this, frankly ridiculously sized, tournament between not only every televised Doctor Who story, not only the spinoffs, not only a large number of minisodes, but over a 100 audios and dozens of other stories from other corners of the EU.
Now we will have to whittle over 600 stories down to jusst one, that is a lot of matches, a lot of rounds, just a lot, until very late in the game, rounds will be posted across several days. Right now the goal is to post (up to) new matches daily from Sunday to Thursday, with Friday's a day off for my own sake, which in my current plan places the final on the 18th of December (thats right, this'll be out of date before its even over, during round 2 in fact)
You can use this form to submit propaganda for your favourite stories (or anti propaganda for ones you hate). there is a more checkable list of nominations here if you want to know what you can submit propaganda for
without further ado
ROUND 1 (Group Stage)
earlier in the year I ran some polls between televised Doctor Who stories, the top 50% for each Doctor have automatically advanced to Round 2, which is why (a) there are stories missing, and (b) the groups between the remaing stories are a lot deadlier
Every day will have groups from across the Doctor Who Universe, from Classic Who, New Who, TV Spinoffs, and the EU

you mentioned in one of your posts about titanic (maybe?) something to do with the philosophy of lifeboats and idk why but the idea of it has been stuck in my mind for at least a week now and i only just refound the post today. could you pls explain what you meant by it?
hello anon, you must have seen my post nitpicking how j bruce ismays character was handled in the titanic movie when i very briefly mentioned the philosophy of lifeboats thing because I Was Being Petty lmao
but yeah so this is gonna be a dumb-downed explanation about a topic thats fairly complex. also im just not gonna get into the debacle of liferafts because im gonna try and keep it simple.
[edit: i have very much failed at keeping it short or simple so if you are interested, come join me after the cut]
see, its only really been within the last century or so that weve regarded lifeboats as things you can escape a sinking ship on and remain within until rescue arrives.
which sounds kinda insane when thinking about it from a modern point of view, right? like in regards to modern sinking incidents or disasters at sea like say the ms achille lauro, msc napoli, ms estonia or even the ss henry steinbrenner to go back to 1953, the story of the rescue is the passengers board the lifeboats, get a safe distance away from the sinking ship and wait for rescue. and nowadays, if this occurs to you, your chance of survival is fairly high.
so its understandable for people to initially be confused as to why this is a modern school of thought as it seems very logical and is what the namesake implies. and for that, we have to put this into the context of the developments within lifeboat technology.
and im aware of how pretentious that sounds, but its a very important part of this discussion.
-
to start, im unfortunately going to have use the titanic as an example because its the only point of reference for most people.
when we look back at the titanic today, we can very easily criticise white star line and harland & wolff simply for not including enough lifeboats on board. and while those are not undue criticisms, they are unduly harsh.
yes, it is ridiculous to not have enough lifeboats on board for all passengers, but back in the 1910s, naval architects found it ridiculous to suggest ships should have that many.
because this is what titanics lifeboats looked like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
compared to modern day lifeboats:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now, you might notice just how different these are: modern day lifeboats tend to be enclosed; they are made of sturdier material; theyre much more buoyant; they have radios on board; are at significantly less risk of capsizing; are legally mandated to come with a sea anchor that can be used to steady your boat; and often can operate under their own power.
also, your ship probably had an epirb (emergency position-indicating radio beacon) or something similar that sent out an automatic distress signal if you werent able to do so yourself.
modern lifeboats can withstand the tumultuous nature of the ocean for a, relatively speaking, very long time and that allows for rescue. thats why people are sometimes rescued from a lifeboat several days after a shipwreck and why rescuers can sometimes be conservative in their rescue, such as waiting for the weather to clear up before approaching.
if youre nearer the equator, you could likely survive weeks within a lifeboat if rescuers either couldnt find you or couldnt reach you.
but thats not always been the case.
-
for a long time, lifeboats were these tiny, rickety, wooden boats (as seen in those photos above) that were easily capsized or sank if they came into contact with even the smallest of waves.
if you needed to sail further from the sinking ship or toward land, you would have to do it with wooden paddles and depending on the state of rescue, you might not even have them. your methods of communication were a limited number of flares where you couldnt be sure theyd even work, rocket flares that again night not even work, a torch, a whistle, or just shouting which rarely ever helped.
so even if you could evacuate safely onto a lifeboat, there was no guarantee that youd be able to signal down another ship or potentially an aircraft.
if you werent able to send out a distress signal or were just on a ship that didnt have the technology to do so, no one would know you were in trouble for hours, if you were lucky. for some, it took days or even weeks.
at approximately 2:15am on the 30 november 1966, the ss daniel j morrell broke in half on lake huron. she was not reported missing for ten hours, after which the coast guard dispatched search and rescue vessels. among the 29 crew aboard, only 1 man survived: dennis hale. he was rescued after nearly 14 hours in a liferaft wherein a further 3 men had passed while waiting for rescue. during those 14 hours, the liferaft had been capsized multiple times sending the few survivors into the freezing waters over and over again. [x]
or for an even more extreme example, take the ss naronic. she set sail on 11th february 1893 from liverpool; she was expected to arrive in new york around the 21st february. she never did arrive, and as this was 5 years before the marconi wireless set would be available on ships, the crew could not put out a distress signal. as the ocean was experiencing bad storms, there was no worry about the ship to begin with as it was presumed she was delayed. it took until the 13 march before any alarms were raised. by then, 74 lives had been lost, and to this day, we dont know anything about why she disappeared. its presumed she sank, but no wreck has been found. while her lifeboats were found, that wasnt the case for survivors. [x]
and even if you were lucky enough to have sent out a distress signal, be relatively safe aboard a lifeboat and have ample methods for communicating, you were still at the mercy of the sea. rescue was coming, but there was no guarantee your lifeboat would stay afloat until it arrived.
it was miraculous that titanics lifeboats were able to stay afloat until the carpathia arrived, and that was only around an hour and a half after the titanic had gone down. because this happened in the north atlantic; any other night, the number of casualties would have been significantly higher because those lifeboats would not have survived in rough seas or a storm.
titanic was the exception to the rule; it was the odd duck. and to exemplify this, lets talk about the clallam, the ss valencia and the ss princess sophia.
-
quick warning about these ships: these were very tragic incidents with monumental loss of life. out of the approximately 608 people who were aboard one of the three ships, only 83 people survived.
(the ss princess sophia is a particularly tragic incident and its one that has made me cry multiple times so just a warning with that.)
we'll begin with the clallam which was a steamboat that ran a regular route from tacoma to seattle to port townsend to victoria. she ran into trouble during a storm while on this run on the 8 january 1904, with 92 people aboard.
she began taking on water when the deadlight was smashed by the waves, and the emergency pumps aboard were not working. this meant they had very little chance of saving her from sinking, especially when the water entered the boiler and cut out the power.
at this point, you may think that the best case scenario for survival would be to abandon ship, but that assumption was quickly proven false.
around 3pm, captain george roberts ordered the ships 3 lifeboats lowered. these were mostly filled by women and children, which makes what came next even more tragic. within minutes of the boats being lowered, they capsized in the rough waters.
everyone on board the lifeboats drowned; all 56 people on board.
but the clallam stayed afloat for several more hours. this gave enough time for the steam tug richard holyoke to arrive on scene, and eventually the 36 people remaining on the clallam were rescued.
all children aboard drowned when the lifeboats were lowered because in 1906, lifeboats were just as much death traps as they were lifeboats. [x] [x]
the sinking of the ss valencia is a similar tale. she was a passenger steamer that was briefly filling in the route of the ss city of puebla, which ran the san fran to seattle route, in january of 1906.
on the 20th, she set sail with around 173 people aboard. the captain aboard was unfamiliar with the route and visibility was so low that the crew could not make celestial observations (by using a sextant, for example) to determine where they were. instead, they had to rely on dead reckoning.
while dead reckoning is fairly reliable, is subject to errors like directional drift and cumulative errors are particularly disastrous and can cause tragedies like the honda point disaster. further, its been alleged the captain did not know how dead reckoning works.
this led to the valencia striking a reef on the night of the 22 january. she was less than 100 yards from shore, but the water around her was rough.
6 of the 7 lifeboats were lowered quickly, as had occured on the clallam. 3 of the boats flipped while being lowered, emptying the survivors into the ocean. the 3 that were lowered successfully did not fair better as 2 of them capsized very quickly and the 3rd simply disappeared.
the last lifeboat was the only one that made it to shore. but still, they had to hike for 2½ hours before they could find help.
while various ships responded to valencias distress call, they were not able to get close enough to offer much assistance. the crew of the valencia launched the 2 life rafts aboard in hopes of drifting close enough to another ship to be rescued. this happened for 18 men on one of the rafts as they were rescued by the city of topeka. the second raft drifted ashore and the 4 survivors aboard were rescued by a group of first nations from the island.
soon, the valencia was washed off of the rocks and she sank. those still on board went down with the ship.
of the approximate 173 people on board, 136 of them died during the disaster. similar to the clallam again, every child on board died. [x]
and this brings us into the ss princess sophia which was a canadian passenger liner. she set sail on the 23rd october in 1918 with 343 people on board. in the early hours of the 24th, she ran aground on vanderbilt reef.
though she was able to send out a distress call and a rescue flotilla of boats were able to arrive on scene, the ss princess sophia took all 343 souls aboard with her when she was eventually washed off of the reef and into the ocean.
now, this is when we get into what lifeboats were intended for back then. the evacuation plan would be for the 8 steel lifeboats aboard sophia to be lowered with passengers and crew members aboard, and paddled toward one of the various rescue ships. the passengers would be taken aboard while the crew would paddle back to the sophia where more passengers would come aboard and be ferried to safety.
this is what happened when the rms republic sank in 1909 and what occured with the ss andrea doria in 1956 though in that case, they only had enough lifeboats to rescue everyone once the ss île de france arrived on scene as dorias list meant half her lifeboats could not be lowered.
unfortunately, captain locke never saw a time where he believed this process could occur. there was only a very short break in the storm, but even during those 5 hours, the ocean was rough with high waves.
captain ledbetter captained the uslht cedar, one of the rescue ships, and went on record saying he never saw conditions that would have permitted an evacuation. [x] [x]
these three cases both exemplify the philosophy of lifeboats only a century ago and why we cant simply apply a modern lens to it without missing crucial details.
-
now lets quickly detour back to the titanic.
as most people know, there were not enough lifeboats aboard for everyone aboard.
this is one of the nitpicks i have about titanic because the portrayal of it paints a warped picture.
so with everything ive rambled on about in this post, we can see why this decision was made. they only needed enough lifeboats to safely ferry passengers from a sinking ship to rescue.
and it was believed that this was a viable evacuation plan in the case that titanic sank. the route she was sailing was a very busy route that often had at least 5-6 ships nearby that could answer a distress call. this is exactly what happened with the rms republic which i mentioned above.
this belief wasnt unique to the titanic or even the white star line. it was held about every ocean liner sailing as these ships were often able to stay afloat for hours acting as its own giant lifeboat due to safety measures and developments like watertight compartments.
and titanic did stay afloat for over 2 hours as it sank. rms republic took over 24 hours irrc while the ocean liner it collided with, the ss florida, was able to sail to port for rescues. ss andrea doria took 10 hours to sink.
during her sea trials in 1927, the ss malolo collided with a freighter (impact equal to the icebrrg to titanic) and was still able to stay afloat and sail despite being flooded with over 7000 tons of sea water.
this belief was clearly not unfounded.
however, the sinking of the titanic practically shattered it. and from then on, almost all ships had enough lifeboat capacity for every passenger on board as it introduced a new function to lifeboats.
-
and this kinda leads us into the somewhat conclusion to this rambling mess that very much could have been shorter and much simpler.
but anyway,
put simply, by philosophy of lifeboats, i mean how the function of a lifeboat evolved alongside developments in technology and maritime disasters.
it seemingly had never occured to naval architects pre-titanic that what occured that night in 1912 was a hypothetical they needed to consider.
lifeboats are still used today to ferry survivors to safety if that is what the situation necessitates, but they are now also designed to function as their namesake implies.

𝚂𝚘𝚖𝚎 𝙰𝚜𝚜𝚎𝚖𝚋𝚕𝚢 𝚁𝚎𝚚𝚞𝚒𝚛𝚎𝚍 (𝙿𝚝 𝟷)
Hunk is asleep in bed, snoring. He's wearing yellow pajamas and is covered by a blue blanket. Suddenly, an alarm blares and Hunk screams, falling out of bed and landing on his stomach. He groans and tries to stand up, but his legs get tangles in the blanker and he falls asleep again as the door automatically again. Shiro, in full Paladin outfit, does push-ups in his room.
"Everybody up!" Allura shouts over the loudspeaker. Shiro looks to his left and begins to stand up "Zarkon's attacking!" Shiro runs out of the room as the doors automatically open and close behind him. Lance lays on his bed in a pale blue pajamas and covered by a navy blue blanket. His face is covered with a green facial mask and his eyes hidden by a black sleep mask. Headphones over his ears, which blocks out the alarm. Y/N, who is also in full Paladin uniform, is sat on the floor of her room, cross legged. Her eyes are closed and she meditates. Soul is sat in front of her, doing the same "The ship's coming closer!" Y/N opens one eye before standing up, picking Soul up and runs out of her room. Keith is sat upright in bed as he examines his knife "The Castle's about to be destroyed!" Keith gasps and throws off his blanket, jumping out of bed and grabbing his jacket - running out. Pidge was sleeping in the room with the healing pods, rover hovering beside him. Until Allura started shouting over the loudspeaker again. Pidge jumps awake, Rover besides him. "Go, go, go! We need Voltron now!" Pidge jumps up and rushes out of the healing room, Rover by his side
==
"Hurry! We can't survive much longer!"
" You've got to sell it a little bit more" Coran takes the speaker from Allura; clearing his throat "Oh, no! Allura is dead! Aw, it's horrible! Her head fell off! Wait! What? Her severed head is trying to speak to me! What is it, Allura's head? What are your final words?"
"Coran"
"Oh, yes, Princess, I'm listening"
"It's over" Allura says sweat dropping. Coran turns around, still on his hands and knees.
"Oh, I know! If only Voltron had been formed" He continues. He looks over noticing the Paladins, excepted Lance. He jumps up "Oh! Time!"
"I guess this isn't an actual attack." Shiro says. Pidge rubs his eyes.
"And it's a good thing it wasn't because it took you... Coran?" Allura says, looking at him.
"Seventy-five degrees. Oh" He says as the "Timer" dings "Sorry. No, this is a meat thermometer"
"However long it was, it was too long. You must always be ready to do battle with Zarkon. Look at you! Only Shiro and Y/N are in uniform. But Y/N doesn't have her helmet. Keith, Pidge, Hunk, where are you bayard? And where is Lance?"
"Keith, Pidge, Hunk, where are your bayards? And where is Lance?" Allura said. The door behind the group and Lance enters wearing a Blue and Yellow dressing gown, Blue Lion slippers and a mug in hand. He yawns.
"Good morning, everybody. What's going on?" Lance said, and his face sparkled. He walks over to them.
"Coran and I have been up for hours getting the Castle back in order. We had to run a test on the alarms, and we decided to test you as well. Guess which one failed." Allura said.
"Hey!" Hunk yawns "You got to sleep for 10,000 years, man. Monday night, I was on Earth. Now, I've flown through space, fought some evil alien named Zarkon, eaten goo in some weird castle." Hunk counts "That's a lot to process in, uh... I-I don't know. What day is today?" Hunk continued.
"It's the third quintant of the Spicolian movement. Hump day!" Coran answers.
"It's a lot to process." Hunk says.
"You must understand the stakes of our mission" Allura brings up a map of the universe from the Castleship's computer and displays the amount of distress beacons "Over the last 10,000 years, the Castle picked up distress beacons from the following locations." Allura says."So, we have to assume that Zarkon has conquered almost the entire known universe" Allura moves the map to the Milky Way where is appears barely out of Zarkon's reach "Earth is here. An attack on your planet is inevitable"
"Oh, no..." Hunk said.
"Exactly. Our mission is to free all those planets. Coran and I are getting the Castle ready to leave Arus. During that time, you have to learn to form Voltron, so we can begin fighting Zarkon." Allura said.
"The Princess is right. Let's get to our lions and start training." Shiro said. Pidge turns to look at him.
"Wait. But I want to talk to the prisoners we rescued from the Galra ship." She said. Coran puts his hands as the size of Pidge.
"Ah, negative, Number Six! I have you ranked by height, okay? The prisoners need to remain in the cryo-replenishers until tomorrow"
"That's right. Now get to your Lions. The Paladins head to their Lions, donning their armour before traveling by zip-line. Hunk's zip line stops.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. What's going on? What's going...?" Hunk falls from his own weight and the zip-line continues without him. Hunk slides down the shaft slowly "Aw, come on. You've got to be kidding me" The Paladins jump through a hole, landing on their speeders that take them to their Lions. Hunk is late to arrive and drop from the zip-line hole, so his speeder takes off without him. He groans in frustration.
==
Outside the Castle of Lions, the other Paladins wait for Hunk.
"...Should someone go in after him?" Lance asks.
"Let's, uh, let's give him a moment" The Yellow Lion finally arrives.
"Hey, sorry, everybody. Seriously, though, can't they park these things, like, a little closer to the bridge?" He said. "
All right, guys. Let's just fly in tight formation until we're totally in sync" Shiro says over the comm. Allura appears on Shiro's screen.
"Feel the bond with your lions and your fellow pilots until five become one unit and you form Voltron!" The Lions take off, flying in sync.
"Yeah...!" They all shout "Yeah...!" They do the formation again "Yeah...!" The Paladins become less enthusiastic "...Yay..."
"Whoo. Am I the only one who's still pretending to be excited?" Hunk said. Everyone has a tired look.
"Clearly, this isn't working. Let's set down for a little bit." Shiro says.
"Maybe we should be building Voltron from the ground up." Keith said.
"What do you mean?" Shiro asked.
"I mean, let's try literally building Voltron, like, stacking on top of each other." Keith answered.
"Like a cheerleader pyramid?" Lance says.
"You got a better idea?" Y/N says.
"It's worth a try"
==
The Paladins stack their lions on top of each other. The Blue and Green Lion on the bottom with the Red and Purple Lion on top of them, facing the side. The Black Lion stands on top of them and the Yellow Lion is at the top.
"Hunk, what are you doing?" Shiro sweatdrops
"What do you mean?" Hunk asks
"You're supposed to be the leg over there" Y/N says.
"What? No. No, no, no. I'm pretty sure that when we did it last time, I was the head. Right?" Hunk said.
"You yelled, 'I'm a leg!'" Lance says.
"Yeah, I was yelling a lot of things." Hunk says/
"Shiro's the head." Keith says.
"All the time?" Hunk said.
"Let's just try it my way for now." Shiro said.
"Okay, but next time I call head." Hunk said. The Paladins stack the Lions properly. The Blue and Yellow on the floor, the Red, Purple and Green Lion on top of them, all facing the same way.
"Okay. Arms and legs... and I'll form the head" Shiro carefully hovers the Black Lion above the others until it stands on top of Pidge, Y/N and Keith's lion's "Feel the bonds with your Lions. Now, channel your energy into forming Voltron. Focus...Focus" Everyone has their eyes closed. Nothing happens "Is everyone bonding and focusing?" Shiro asked.
"Why was this so much easier before?" Lance asks. Shiro sighs.
"Let's take a break" Allura appears on everyone's screen from the Cammand Room.
"Sorry to interrupt, but I may be able to help. Yesterday, you weren't able to form Voltron until you were in the heat of battle." She said.
"Yeah" Pidge says.
"I'm listening." Lance says.
"You're right." Shiro says.
"You've got a point" Y/n says.
"Yeah, I guess" Keith says.
"Perfect. Because I need to run a diagnostic test on all of the Castle's defences. This should help!" Allura said. The Castle of Lions fire blasts as the Paladins.
"This can't be good" Y/N says. The Paladins are then bombarded with fire blasts and they scream and flee.
"Okay, go, go!" Lance shouts.
"Allura, what are you doing?" Allura smiles at Keith from his screen while he's running from explosions.
"Running a diagnostic test on the Castle defences and inspiring you! I believe in you, Paladins! Let fear be your guide! Form Voltron!" She said excitedly.
"Oh, forget this! I'm heading back to the Castle!" Lance says. He pilots the Blue Lion towards the Castleship, dodging the attacks, but is thrown back by the particle barrier. Hunk dodges the bombardment.
"Please stop! Please! Have mercy on us!" Hunk cried. Allura appears on Hunk's screen.
"You think Zarkon is going to have mercy on you? He's probably on his way right now to destroy us all!" Allura says.
"Auto-lock-on engaged"
"Uh oh" Y/N says. The Castle of Lions auto-fires at the panicking Paladins.
==
The Paladins, except Shiro, lay exhausted on the couches of the Castle Lounge. Allura and Coran enter.
"Are we at full power on condenser number five yet?" Allura asks, looking down at a device.
"No, still just 84 percent." Coran answers. Allura looks up and sees the Paladins.
"You did it! You formed Voltron!" Allura says. Lance is laying down, taking up a whole seat. Hunk has his arms up on the back of the couch. Y/N is layed across the couch, her back bending with the shape of the couches, faced down, feet in Keith's lap. Soul rubbing her bruised head. Pidge and Keith are sat upright, Keith having his arms crossed.
"No. The shooting stopped and the particle barrier shut down, so we just flew in." Keith says.
What?" Allura asks. Coran looks at her, wide eyed.
"Oh, right. Uh, sorry, Princess. I had to turn off the Castle defences to test the fire suppressors." Coran says. Y/N lifts her head, looking to Coran.
"Thank you Coran. Thank you" She says, placing her head back down on it's side. Shiro enters and they all look at him.
"What are you guys doing in here? We're not taking a break." He says.
"Shiro's right. You should be training." Allura said.
"We've been training. When are we going back to Earth? " Hunk sasks.
"I'm not going back until I find my family." Pidge says, leaning forward.
"Guys, there won't be an Earth if we don't figure out how to fight Zarkon." Shiro said. Lance sits up.
"How are we going to fight? We can't even figure out how to form Voltron." He said.
"Well, I'm not surprised. You know, the original paladins fought hundreds of battles together, side-by-side. They were like a pack of yalmors linked at the ears." Coran said.
"Wow. Yeah, that's definitely not us." Lance said, and laid back down, putting his foot on the back of the couch.
"During the last attack, your survival instincts forced you to work as a team, but that will only get you so far. You'll have to become a real team to have any chance of forming Voltron and then beating Zarkon next time" Everyone looks to Coran "You should try working out on the training deck." Coran said. Y/N lifts her head, pushing herself up with her arms.
"There's a training deck?" Y/N says.
==
The Training Deck illuminates; Coran clears his throat to check his microphone as the Paladins are standing on the training deck in a circle.
"Two, two, one, two. Okay, listen up guys. The Paladins code demands that you put your team members' safety above your own. A swarm of drones is about to attack. It's up to each of you to do everything you can to protect the other members of your team" Altean drones appear; Keith, Pidge and Y/N form shields.
"Wait, wait, wait. What's going on?" Hunk says as his shield forms "Whoa. Did you guys get one of these?" He said. Lance and Shiro form shields.
"Get ready" The Altean drones fire lasers. Hunk dodges and Pidge is struck, dropping into a hole that opens up underfoot.
"Hunk your supposed to protect, not duck" Y/N shouts, putting her shield in front of her face as a fire laser shoots at her.
"Protect your teammates or no one will be there to protect you!" Coran said. Hunk then went down. Y/N, Lance, Shiro and Keith huddle back-to-back to defend themselves "Time to increase intensity" The drone fire becomes rapid.
"You keeping up over there, Keith?" Lance said.
Just concentrate on keeping me safe" Keith said.
"Me? I own this drill. You're the one who needs to concentrate" Lance says. The drones fire at their heads. Shiro, Y/N and Keith dodge, but Lance is distracted and does not. He lifts his foot to avoid being shot, and Keith is shot instead, disappearing into the floor. Y/N takes Keith's place.
"Really Lance!" She shouts. Lance tried to defend Y/N and Shiro but it struck himself, leaving Y/N and Shiro who stand back-to back.
"You good shiro" Y/N says.
"Yeah, you" He replies.
"Good" Shiro doesn't notice the drone to his left so Y/N shields him, leaving her back open. She gets shot and the floor beneath her opens and she falls. Shiro, being the last one left, has no way of protecting himself and shortly ends up struck. He falls through the hole in the floor. Coran facepalms but continues to the next test: an invisible maze. Lance stands inside the maze.
"To form Voltron, you must trust each other. This ancient Paladin maze will teach you that trust. Your teammate can see the walls, but you cannot. So, listen carefully. If yo touch the walls, you'll get a slight shock" Lance puts on his helmet.
"Wait. Who's guiding me through?"
"Take two steps forward" Keith says through Lance's helmet using a microphone.
"Oh, no. Not Keith. Why does he get to be the man on the mic?"
"Now, just sit tight. You'll get your turn"
"Like I said, take two steps forward, turn right, and take three steps that direction" Lance only turns right and hits a wall, getting shocked.
"You did that on purpose!" Lance says, looking up at Keith.
"You're not listening"
"You said, 'Turns right'"
"But, before that, I said, 'Take two steps forward"
"Two steps--" Lance steps in the wrong direction and gets shocked again "We're switching places right now!" Later, it was Y/N and Pidge's go. Y/N was in the maze, while Pidge was guiding her.
"Turn left, three steps forward. Stop!" Y/N does so "Back 1" Y/N moves back "Turn left then 2 steps forwards then make a left turn then 3 steps forward" Pidge says. Y/N follows the guide.
"Nice teamwork you two, no wonder the Green and Purple lion have such a good bond, they trust in each other" Coran said with a smile. Y/N looks up at Pidge, smiling.
"I guess we do, huh"

trick or treat... something spooooky :3
if only i'd ever written a single word of that Frankenstein AU idea...alas! i spent so long mulling this over, i don't really write horror and even like, suspense is rare for me and i think i've shared all the best examples of it.
so here is a more recent wip that i hope is written suspensefully!! to set the scene: a ghost ship has just been detected on the edge of Preservation space. It's drifting under no engine power and not responding to comm contacts. Murderbot goes with the station responder to check it out, and when they get close they pick up a short range "assistance needed" signal. Here's two snips, since they're short:
---
“So they were desperate.” “Yes.” “Why couldn’t we pick up the signal until we got this close? It’s not very good as a distress beacon.” I had also wondered about that, and I had an answer from my analysis of the signal. “It isn’t coming from a bot pilot. It matches the signal strength of a planetary rescue marker. We had similar ones on surveys. It’s meant for a hopper flying over an area to be able to locate a single lost human, not a ship in the middle of space.” “So the bot pilot is probably down, or it would be broadcasting a stronger signal.” “Probably. Or it’s playing dead.” “What’s your assessment?” “We can’t rule out that it’s a corporate decoy.” Indah made an I know, you’ve said that already face, but I wasn’t done. “We shouldn’t stop treating it as a potential threat, but I don’t think that’s the most likely scenario. I think a system failed, some panicked human managed to set off an emergency beacon, and then the ship lost power completely.” “So you think when we board it—“ “We’re going to find a lot of dead humans.”
[they board the ship, and find a lot of dead humans. they go exploring a little bit....]
The size and layout of the room was familiar. Just big enough for Indah and I to both squeeze in without her getting too close to me, but not much bigger. A cabinet in the corner that was tall enough to hold a set of armor. A locked crate to hold weapons and other security equipment. And in the corner— Indah took a step towards the chest-height white cube, looking puzzled. I said, “That’s a cubicle.” She froze. “For?” “For SecUnits.” Indah cursed under her breath. “Is there one inside?” “It’s shielded to scans.” I moved towards the cubicle, and she got out of my way. I had an unpleasant guess about what was still drawing power even before I put my hand on the casing. There was a faint buzz. It was running. I grabbed the handle and pulled the door open. There was a SecUnit inside. My threat assessment spiked, even though I had anticipated a high probability that the cubicle was occupied. The SecUnit had its eyes closed, and it didn’t move when I opened the door. I watched it for a few seconds, and then said, “It’s in stasis.” Indah had one hand on her baton, like that was going to do anything against a SecUnit. “What does that mean?” “It’s like sleeping. Or…cryo pods, like on the generation ships…?” I wondered if those actually worked the way they did in the dramatization of Preservation’s founding that I’d watched with my humans once. “It’s partly offline. It will only wake up if a system tells it to.” It still hadn’t reacted to me opening the door. The cubicle didn’t seem to be kicking it into a restart. “It probably disabled the automatic restart and sealed itself in here. It was trying to escape the contamination.” “Clever,” Indah muttered.

Prepare Vessels for Potential Tropical Cyclone 9
Tumblr media
Today, Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 24-208, Emergency Management – Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine, declaring a state of emergency in 41 Florida counties ahead of the storm. Weather is expected to strengthen and is anticipated to cover a large area, affecting regions well beyond its center into Florida. There is a considerable risk of storm surge, coastal flooding and erosion, heavy rainfall and flash flooding, as well as damaging winds. Preparation is critical to staying safe and minimizing severe weather impacts. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) gathered the following informational resources to help boaters prepare and recover from intense storms.  Prepare Vessels for Potential Tropical Cyclone 9 Move your vessel if you can and protect it if you can’t  - If your boat can be trailered, haul it out of the water and move it to a safe location as far from tidal waters as possible. This includes kayaks and other recreational watercraft. - If your vessel must stay in a marina berth, double all lines and rig cross-spring lines fore and aft, and attach lines high on pilings to allow for tidal rise or surge. - If your vessel is at anchor, move to the most protected area possible and set out multiple anchors with at least a 10:1 scope, remove canvas coverings if possible, and remove or secure any sails. - If your vessel is to remain on a mooring, make sure it is designed to withstand the load that your vessel will place on it. Inspect chains and swivels connecting to the mooring buoy and double up on the pendant. - Remember to remove Electronic Position Indicating Radio Beacons, life rings, life jackets and loose items from the boat and store them in a safe, indoor location. - Use the Florida Boat Ramp Finder to find a ramp near you. Cover all lines to prevent chafing  - Wrap all lines where lines feed through chocks with tape, rags and rubber hoses or leather. Install fenders, fender boards or tires to protect the boat from rubbing against the pier, pilings or other boats.  Charge batteries and make sure they can run automatic bilge pumps throughout the storm  - Consider adding backup batteries and shut off all other devices that consume electricity.  Do not stay onboard and do not venture out into rough conditions  - If you’re onboard during a bad storm, you are risking your life and the lives of potential responders. - Learn what Florida law says about mandatory marina evacuations. Chapter 327.59, F.S., Marina Evacuations.  After the storm, report issues to the FWC - Check marina eligibility for disaster relief through Small Business Administration loans. SBA Disaster Assistance. - Report missing and/or damaged waterway markers. - Report storm-damaged boats that might be lost or abandoned to your local law enforcement agency (preferred) or the FWC Division of Law Enforcement at 888-404-3922. - Call 911 or use VHF Marine Radio Channel 16 to report distress and other emergencies. Social media should not be used to report life-threatening distress due to limited resources to monitor the dozens of social media platforms during severe storm events.  For more information, visit MyFWC.com/boating and click on “Boater Education.” Read the full article

Master Morse Code in Minutes: Understanding how morse code translators works
Tumblr media
In today's fast-paced world, communication is more important than ever. Whether it's connecting with loved ones across the globe or transmitting critical information in emergencies, the ability to convey messages quickly and accurately is invaluable. While modern technology has given us an array of advanced communication tools, there's something timeless and fascinating about Morse code a method of transmitting text information using sequences of dots and dashes.
Enter the Morse code translator – a powerful online tool that brings this classic communication method into the digital age. But what exactly is Morse code, and how does a Morse code translator work? Let's delve into the world of Morse code translation and explore the significance of these tools in today's society.
Understanding Morse Code
Morse code, named after its inventor Samuel Morse, is a method of encoding text characters as sequences of two different signal durations, called dots and dashes or dits and dahs. Each character in the English alphabet, as well as numbers and punctuation marks, is represented by a unique combination of these dots and dashes.
For example, the letter "A" is represented by ".-", while the letter "B" is represented by "-…". By stringing together these sequences of dots and dashes, Morse code can convey any message, making it a versatile and efficient means of communication, particularly in situations where other forms of communication may be unavailable or impractical.
The Evolution of Morse Code Translation Tools
While Morse code has been around for over 150 years, the advent of digital technology has revolutionized the way we use and interact with this communication method. Morse code translation tools, such as the online translator offered by [Your Tool Name], have made it easier than ever to encode and decode Morse code messages with speed and accuracy.
These tools typically feature user-friendly interfaces where users can input text in any language, and the tool will automatically translate it into Morse code. Conversely, users can also input Morse code sequences, and the tool will translate them back into readable text. This bidirectional functionality makes Morse code translation tools incredibly versatile and accessible to users of all skill levels.
The Versatility of Morse Code Translation Tools
The applications of Morse code translation tools are virtually limitless. From amateur radio enthusiasts and emergency responders to cryptography hobbyists and language learners, these tools cater to a diverse range of users with different interests and needs.
For example, amateur radio operators use Morse code as a means of long-distance communication when other forms of communication are unreliable or unavailable. Morse code translation tools allow them to quickly encode and decode messages, facilitating smooth and efficient communication even in challenging conditions.
Similarly, emergency responders may use Morse code to transmit distress signals in situations where verbal communication is not possible. With the help of Morse code translation tools, they can convey critical information to coordinate rescue efforts and save lives.
Cryptography enthusiasts also appreciate Morse code for its simplicity and elegance. Morse code translation tools enable them to experiment with different encoding and decoding techniques, allowing for endless possibilities in the field of encryption and decryption.
Practical Uses in Everyday Life
While Morse code may seem like a relic of the past to some, it still finds practical applications in our everyday lives. For example, Morse code has been utilized in navigation aids such as lighthouses and buoys, where it serves as a visual or auditory beacon to guide ships safely through hazardous waters.
In addition, Morse code has found its way into popular culture, appearing in movies, literature, and even music. Its distinct rhythm and pattern have inspired artists and creators to incorporate it into their work, adding a unique and nostalgic flair to their creations.
The Future of Morse Code Translation
As technology continues to evolve, Morse code translation tools are likely to become even more sophisticated and user-friendly. Advances in artificial intelligence and natural language processing may enable these tools to interpret and translate Morse code messages with unprecedented accuracy and efficiency.
Moreover, as awareness of Morse code grows and interest in amateur radio and cryptography continues to rise, Morse code translation tools may see increased adoption among a broader audience. Whether it's for practical communication purposes or purely for recreational enjoyment, these tools have the potential to play a significant role in shaping the future of communication.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Morse code translation tools represent a fascinating intersection of history, technology, and communication. By bridging the gap between the analog past and the digital present, these tools keep alive the tradition of Morse code while making it accessible to a new generation of users.

How to Deal with Automatic Negative Thoughts (ANTs)
Tumblr media
I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.-Carl Jung In the vast landscape of our minds, automatic negative thoughts (ANTs) often wander unchecked, casting shadows over our moods, behavior, and perspectives. Like unwelcome guests, they can arrive without warning, influencing our feelings and actions. However, understanding and managing these thoughts is crucial for personal growth and maintaining mental wellness. This article delves into strategies for identifying and dealing with ANTs, offering a beacon of hope for those seeking to lighten their mental load. Understanding ANTs ANTs are intrusive, often irrational thoughts that can lead to a cascade of negative emotions. They are the product of cognitive distortions — skewed perspectives we adopt about ourselves and the world around us. Common distortions include overgeneralization, catastrophizing, and personalization, where one might see a single event as a never-ending pattern of defeat, expect the worst, or take things personally when they are not. Recognizing ANTs in Your Life The first step in managing ANTs is recognizing their presence. This involves mindful awareness of your thought patterns, especially during or after distressing situations. Keeping a thought diary can be an effective way to track ANTs, noting the situation, the thought, and the accompanying emotion. Over time, patterns emerge, offering insights into recurring distortions and their triggers.
Strategies for Dealing with ANTs
Cognitive Behavioral Techniques Cognitive restructuring is a powerful tool in the fight against ANTs. It involves identifying irrational thoughts, challenging their validity, and replacing them with more balanced, rational ones. Questions like "Is there evidence for this thought?" or "Is there a more positive way to look at this situation?" can help reframe thoughts. Mindfulness and Meditation Mindfulness teaches us to observe our thoughts without judgment, recognizing them as mental events rather than absolute truths. Through meditation, we can learn to detach from ANTs, viewing them from a distance rather than getting swept away by their current. Positive Affirmations and Self-Talk Replacing negative thoughts with positive affirmations can gradually shift our internal dialogue. Affirmations should be positive, in the present tense, and believable. Regular practice can rewire thought patterns, making positive self-talk a new habit. Building Resilience Emotional resilience doesn't eliminate ANTs but allows us to bounce back more quickly. Building resilience involves nurturing a support network, practicing self-care, and setting realistic goals. It's about knowing when to push through and when to step back and recharge. Seeking Professional Help Sometimes, ANTs can be overwhelming, significantly impacting our quality of life. In such cases, seeking help from a mental health professional can provide the support and strategies needed to manage these thoughts effectively.
Practical Exercises and Tools
Thought Records Keeping a thought record is an effective way to challenge ANTs. This involves noting the situation, emotion, and automatic thought and then reframing it into a more balanced thought. Mindfulness Meditation Practicing mindfulness meditation daily can help increase awareness of ANTs and reduce their impact. Even just five minutes can make a difference.
Conclusion
Dealing with automatic negative thoughts is a journey that requires patience, practice, and persistence. By recognizing, challenging, and reframing these thoughts, we can gradually shift our mindset towards a more positive, balanced perspective. Remember, it's not about eliminating negative thoughts entirely but learning to manage them in a way that they no longer control our emotions and behavior. With the right strategies and support, we can all become masters of our minds, rather than being at the mercy of our thoughts. Read the full article

Icymi but also a little rambling about stuff I added here ( let me have this, I've spent more time w a dictionary writing this than I have in my last two years of highschool) and also bc I thought more writing this than I did any essay in my academic life 😔😔😔😔
1. The parchment shaped wall clock was supposed to be based on. This curio. I was so entraces by its design I pictured how something similar would look like as a clock (and yes this is a curio but it's weird looking enough that you can find it in some empty cardboard boxes or in the trash)
Tumblr media
2. The soup made with nettle leaves- is inspired from Cignidaki zumi— an actual Romani dish, soup made with stinging nettle leaves. I found a bunch of romani recipes but this one really caught my eye bc we have stinging nettle plant here I didn't know u can eat them until now.
3. The pink diamond bit is from the jade's timeline thing hsr posted a while ago ofc, I wanted to see a follow up on it and didn't get it so I made my own reality. I don't think finding out his birthday would take jade much effort bc A. The reports mention the avgin extinction being on their religious festival kakava and. His name is kakavasha. B. But other than that, checking his files (esp in the beginning) I like to think the system is advanced enough that it automatically concerts various dating systems and such (they're modern Enough to have the synesthesia beacon)
4. The corundum stone (god BLESS finding a stone similar to his eyes took YEARS OFF MY LIFE) it has other colors? Don't worry. Hsr has better gemstones. We can't even get the diamonds from Uranus.
Tumblr media
5. I have.... negative feelings about jade, if you couldn't tell. I tried not to make her like a completely evil lady, but given how she did call him to "talk" post penacony main quest in canon (it had layers too) I like to think between his whole thing in penacony and later actions she thought he might need a reminder. And shed know to pick a good time.
6. virtually no way for the reader to know his personal info if he doesn't give them UNLESS she knows someone like Jade. Had they asked topaz, she'd tell them that he doesn't like it (bc the stonehearts' birthdays and such are an occasion for a party/dinner/ etc, upper class socializing stuff (that is important to the business and cause) but aventurine doesn't do THAT even tho he does throw those necessary parties anyway. So it's obvious that he. Doesn't like celebrating it at least if nothing else. Later scrapped that cuz.... that's a lot of thinking
7. I thought of adding the catcakes bc cats (pets) are a great source of comfort for So many people. And they're incredibly good at sensing human emotions. And (canonically) they're said to be as intelligent as a 6 year old so. The catcakes remind him of food when aventurine is lost in his thoughts (and it doesn't feel like it's pleasant), to distract him and direct him towards a task. They all gather around him when he starts drinking bc while they likely don't understand the concept of drinking well they DO know he's distressed, so keeping him company to help him. They'd be a little freaked out to see him emotional I imagine, bc that's not something they ever saw (hence the immediate nervous attempt at comforting by nuzzling into him) I looked up how real cats act to write this and now I want a kitty do bad 😞😔
I also like. Didn't keep them in focus at all bc like....he's not in the headspace to think about them much. But they keep showing up bc that IS his family, too .
8. Dismissing a comforting smell as a potion seems something he'd do. There's actually an all good potion ( consumable) in hsr and while THAT one didn't end up in the market there's def similar stuff already. I imagine something that makes hospital food feel comforting for the patients would be popular, hence that conclusion
9. Kakavasha's shoes . I actually thought they were different when I wrote this but later realized that they seem ....to be modified. Mended maybe? But yeah. Only a pair of shoes
Tumblr media
10. His mother smells of creosote bush. This species is found in the deserts of southwestern North America, and is said to smell of the desert rain. For a child who was blessed by rain on his birth day I think his mother likely smelt of rain, too.
11. I wanted to add in a scene with Aventurine's secretary to show she really NEVER looks at his eyes because they're. Usually seen as freaky and odd by people. And paired with the discomfort itself, she'd naturally be more careful to not do that to not offend him (him being her boss and. Because he knows how everyone sees them.) not like that's what HE wants, but what she assumes. But I decided to scrap that lol
12. Also he only managed to cry that much bc he was inebriated lol I don't think he'll ever cry like that otherwise (plus his house is empty so he doesn't have to hide it(
And I wrote down about him still remembering the painful memories with his family (while he tries to forget the extinction event desperately) bc he needs to Preserve their memory and spent like 10 minutes thinking about it preservation.... preservation....
But anyway that's about it!!
Happy Birthday, Aventurine!!
Tumblr media
“Aventurine always tries not to remember. He's never synced the Sigonian calendar system to check the date in trailblaze calendar, never makes the mistake of dwelling on the memories surrounding this day— even when he's too drunk to remember his own name. Done everything possible to not acknowledge it; because this day feels like nothing but a curse to him.
Unfortunately, Jade has now ensured that he never gets to forget his birthday, again.”
Pairing: Aventurine x reader
Tags: Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Comfort in the end to compensate for everything else ❤️ Reader is not physically present in the fic (they're not dead it's ok)
wc: 3.3k
Aventurine was abruptly interrupted by a knock on the door just as the sun began to slant westward.
With a sigh, he puts down the pen and glances at the wall clock. The hands on the parchment-shaped monstrosity read 1 pm, but his eyes are drawn back to the purple tongue protruding from its massively extended mouth. Seriously, where does Stelle find these items? "An ugly, purple parchment shaped wall clock that looks like it's ready to eat people"— isn't something most people would think to give him, to say the least. But that's the thing—it was Stelle.
She claimed to have found it during one of her "excavations." And even though Miss March 7th did her best to keep her friend from going into further details, stepping on Stelle's toes right in front of him and giving her a sidelong glance, as if he wouldn't notice, he could tell what kind of "excavations" would turn up something like this. Not like he minds the origins of this gift, however. Gifts from friends are few and far to come by, especially ones who actually tolerate him. Not to mention, Stelle likely sincerely believes that it's a cool gift, which is why it has replaced the diamond-embedded wall clock on his wall.
His musings are interrupted by a second knock, which, like the first one, reverberates once around the room before fading away in embarrassment. "Come in." He announces, reclining back in his seat and looking at the door with expectation in his eyes. It was not uncommon for his secretary to appear randomly in his office, constantly fussing over yet another minor issue. He believed it was her; at least, his itinerary showed he didn't have any guest visits today. Maybe it was time to replace assistants—the new hire is clearly not on the same wavelength as him. But he'd only recently had Topaz yell at him for changing staff so frequently; he'd prefer not to tell her that her choice was horribly disappointing just yet.
With a tiny bag bearing a brand he is all too acquainted with, the secretary enters the office. She keeps her gaze fixed on the floor the entire time, hence doesn't notice when her supervisor raises an eyebrow at the sight of his favorite jewelry brand. "Sir," she says in a low, somewhat flat voice, akin to that of a news reporter. "Earlier, a staff of Madam Jade stopped by. You have a present."
A grin appears on Aventurine's face, followed by a joyful chuckle. With how busy work has been lately, he'd almost forgotten when he asked Jade for a pink diamond, as has Jade apparently, seeing how long it's taken for her to send this. His request was a joke, of course, only meant to irritate Topaz. But he wasn't surprised either; Jade always takes good care of her weaponry. "Ahhh, no wonder!" He chirps and presses his palms together. "She must've finally found some generosity in her heart, hm?" He muses, and his assistant can only stand there stoically. He waves her off as she places the bag on his table and departs with an unnecessary low bow, never looking at his eyes once. As always.
When the secretary has left the room, he opens the bag, humming as he removes the box and gift card. Jade's handwriting is distinctive: prim and precise cursive that resembles a font.
"Happy birthday, Aventurine. This jewel would suit you far better than the pink diamond you asked for, don't you think?" — Jade
Kakavasha freezes. His birthday, she says, but she'd need to align the standard calendar system to the Sigonian one to find that out. She sent him a…..….a gift? For his birthday?
Is this a fucking joke?
The box reveals a chunk of corundum. Raw, uncut, pink and blue hues all over. Shades way too close to his eyes, and it doesn't take a gemologist to tell that Jade had done her searching thoroughly to obtain this. A jewel the color of his eyes, the color of Avgin eyes, neatly wrapped in a box for….to send ..what sort of message, exactly? Oh Avgin, never forget who you were before I found you—unpolished and undeserving. forget your name, but never your roots.
The note is crumpled and thrown in the trashcan, while the corundum and its box are hastily and carelessly pushed back into the bag. Really, so typical of Jade, he scoffs as he tosses the godforsaken bag into a random drawer, never to be seen again.
Kakavasha— no, Aventurine always tries not to remember. He's never synced the Sigonian calendar system to check the date in trailblaze calendar, never makes the mistake of dwelling on the memories surrounding this day— even when he's too drunk to remember his own name. Done everything possible to not acknowledge it; because this day feels like nothing but a curse to him.
Unfortunately, Jade has now ensured that he never gets to forget, again.
In any case, Aventurine concludes that it is not good for him to worry about this too much. Yes, he can just forget about the corundum. Yes, he is able to forget how it resembled Avgin eyes. Yes, he can also forget that Jade most likely sent this to "keep him in check" following the stunt he did in Penacony. But it was a mistake on his part to not see something coming. She had done this before, and it would not be the last time. He smiles at his own reflection in the bathroom mirror, composed, shrewd, and calculated. Since a mirror has the freedom of choice, it does not return his smile.
⋄⋆⊹⋄⋆⋄⋆⊹⋄⋆⋄⋆⊹⋄⋆
By the time the car comes to a stop in front of his house, Aventurine is exhausted. His chauffeur unlocks the door for him, and he makes his way to the elevator. Yet he's interrupted again— of course, because it's a cursed day, and Aventurine has to restrain himself from scowling at the gateman, who stands in front of him wearing an anxious expression. "Sir, your friend had visited earlier to drop off something."
He raises an eyebrow and is about to inquire when he notices the bag the man is carrying. Without saying anything further, he simply takes the bag. You are the only one who'd own a dumb clockie bag and the only one who'd ever drop things off at his place.
When he steps in, his three catcakes meow loudly to greet him, and feels somewhat grateful for it. Today was just too exhausting, after all. He understands what this is about, based on the fact that you always give him gifts in person. Why, of all days, would you consider dropping it off today? And with no advanced notice- completely unlike you. How annoying, did Jade really have to do this too? He's never disclosed his birthday to you, so you probably coerced her into telling you, and she was glad to oblige, given you are of value to her.
Aventurine doesn't realize he's been standing in the kitchen for a long time until Spade begins massaging its fluffy body on his legs. He is surrounded by his three catcakes, who are all staring up at him expectantly. The message is crystal clear: We Want Food. He moves swiftly to get their food bowls, chuckling to himself before setting your lunchbox on the counter, sort of as an afterthought. At least they'll be able to go to bed well fed tonight.
After serving them dinner, he leaves the kitchen carrying a bottle of wine, hoping to spend the remainder of the evening crashing on the couch. He can just leave everything else for tomorrow. The benefit of drinking is that it can temporarily impair your ability to sense emotions. He only needs a short term fix, after all. Come tomorrow, he'll take hangover pills, and walk out of this house as Aventurine of the stratagems again— undoubtedly.
He turns on a random B-grade movie, prepared to drink the night away. And he does precisely that—he pushes down thoughts of how his childhood friends, whose features now misty in his memories, would react if they were to see him. With another shot, he pushes down recollections of his mother's cooking—the special meals for the Kakava—and his birthday. Another to accept the now-blurry face of his sister in his memory as the only proof of her existence. Another to forget the clay dolls she'd made for him, on the last birthday kakavasha got to celebrate, that were broken when he had to run for his life. And one more shot, and another, till he's forgotten everything; till he's numb and emotionless.
Feeling empty and hollow is far worse than anything else, and being unable to cry isn't as pleasant as he thought it'd be. But in his lavish home, where gold abounds in every nook and cranny, he has little reason for tears. Money may not be able to buy him happiness, as he is well aware, but it certainly does spare him from ugly tears unfit for his visage. Maybe that's why he hasn't cried in a while, or perhaps he has simply lost his soul somewhere along the way. He stays on the couch till 3 am, accompanied by his pets. He pretends not to see the troubled looks they shoot at him, whispered words passed between them that are clearly about him. By the time he decides to rest for the night, he is fatigued, sluggish, and barely keeping it together.
When he gets up to grab a glass of water from the kitchen, Ace makes a protesting noise before promptly shutting up. Catcakes are smart creatures, and they understand him better than most individuals in his life (or maybe the difference lies in care) His throat is dry, and ice cold water from the freezer provides enormous relief. However, the respite is taken away from him by the crackling lightning, loud as a whip, pulling out memories up to the forefront of his mind again. Of the lightning without the rain, of Sigonia-IV. The drumming of the thunder is largely hidden by the concrete walls, so it isn't as hard on the ear—but it aches a lot more than it did before. Aventurine sneers to himself, dismissing the idea as ludicrous. As if.
The second time the thunder sizzles, Aventurine has to take a sharp breath and grip the countertop to steady himself. It sounds like playing dead in the bleeding streams of Sigonia-IV, like the booming cackle of the mocking thunder. Had he been an insolent child, just a little more doubtful than he already was, he'd believe it was Mama Fenge herself laughing at her so called "blessed child". The thunder sounds similar, but it's not the same. No, because this is still Aventurine and he's still here and those are someone else's memories, forgotten and buried in sand.
Aventurine sighs.
Drinking too much has never done any good to him.
Just as he is ready to leave the kitchen, he notices the lunchbox sitting the counter out of the corner of his eye. Oh, right. He hadn't even touched it. A distraction doesn't seem bad now, though. If he wants to fabricate a plausible lie about eating the food, he would at least need to know what kind of food you sent. If the mental image of your frown after discovering he never even looked at what you sent is what gives him the final push , he would never admit it.
The lunchbox has a plains bear cub logo: you've always been a sucker for cute things. He sets aside the little note attached for later this time, preferring to taste the dinner first. It looks like you chose to make him some kind of soup. Insulated lunchboxes are a blessing— because it's surely been well over half a day since you made it, yet it's still warm. While the presentation is relatively simple, it smells strangely comforting— effect of some potion? He's heard of those, but they're usually used for sick patients, no? Other than that, this is the first homemade meal he's having in a….while. Not that it matters. Aventurine isn't picky, and while the leafy greens are unfamiliar to him, he believes he can handle at least a tablespoon.
Even the largest avalanche can be triggered by the smallest of things. Just one spoonful, and yet it's enough to make his world stop.
⋄⋆⊹⋄⋆⋄⋆⊹⋄⋆⋄⋆⊹⋄⋆
The dry, broken soil scraped against his bare feet, producing little clouds of dust in its wake. His strides were light and rapid, nearly tripping over himself with excitement and giddiness. Just a little more, and he'll reach the finish line. Even the Sun's typical glare felt kind today; warm and tender against his tanned skin. Jumping over the homemade hurdles, he reaches the finish line far ahead of his friends. They protest and pout, and he taunts them with the biggest smile on his face. The soles of his feet feel slightly sore from running barefoot, but Kakavasha wouldn't risk destroying his only pair of shoes for a game.
When he hears his sister's voice calling for him, he rushes to embrace her and buries his face in her apron. His mother once told him that the Avgins all possess lovely voices, but Kakavasha believes his sister's is the best, especially when she laughs.
"And when will you listen to me and stop running around in the middle of the day, hm?" She pinches his nose and uses her apron to wipe the dirt off his face. Kakavasha beams at her with no regrets, proudly displaying the gap between his teeth. Once kakavasha had said his goodbyes to his friends, they walk hand in hand towards their tent.
There, his mother welcomes them with a warm embrace that smells like creosote bush and desert rain. “My darling," she coos, putting his small hands in her larger ones, rough from labour. "I remember you promised to be on time for lunch last time?" He grins cheekily, vowing not to do it again. (He's a repeat offender, but he knows that his mother and sister can't stay upset at him for long.)
His mother laughs, and tells him to tidy up before eating. Kakavasha's tummy is grumbling by the time he returns, and he finds the mats his sister laid down to sit on. The two siblings sit next to each other, chatting and giggling as they wait for their mother. She serves them a pot of hot soup with nettle leaves and lentils, just the way Kakavasha prefers it. He's overjoyed; quickly finishing his prayers before digging in. Kakavasha is a growing boy, and that's proved again when he finishes his bowl before his family.
⋄⋆⊹⋄⋆⋄⋆⊹⋄⋆⋄⋆⊹⋄⋆
The soup she'd served him back then wasn't anything lavish; just a simple soup with local herbs and nettle leaves in a broth that smelt so uniquely of hers. His mama may have had a knack for cooking, but due to a lack of opportunities and resources, she never got to demonstrate her abilities. Compared to that, your food is much finer, and while excellent, it lacks the warmth of his mother's hands.
Nevertheless, he can't resist taking another spoonful and quickly putting it in his mouth because the familiarity is so, so palpable. He recalls that his sister wanted him to eat better, so she gave him half of her portion after he finished his. His mother then gave his sister half of her portion, as they are Both growing children. All of a sudden, the bickering, the laughs, and their voices are as plain as day in his mind. He can't fully recall the glitter in his sister's eyes or the dimple on his mother's cheek, but it's clearer than any other memory he had of them, that's for sure.
Aventurine can't stop crying, even if he wants to. Trying to halt the choking sobbing is fruitless, as is trying to figure out what's going on. He picks up the little message with shaking hands, hoping—praying—that it will help. You'll make it make sense. Somehow.
⋄⋆⊹⋄⋆⋄⋆⊹⋄⋆⋄⋆⊹⋄⋆
“Dear Aventurine, I hope you have a wonderful birthday!!!!”
Written in thin, flowing, rounded letters that are noticeably cleaner than your actual handwriting. You undoubtedly put a lot of effort into each letter you wrote. Aventurine was correct in assuming you found out his birthday through Jade, as you have written it here. "Buying a gift for you seems…a little perfunctory," you said, "so I've settled with cooking you something myself."
"And if the dish tastes familiar (which I hope it does) then yes, you've guessed it right— it's a traditional Avgin dish."
The perfumed ink is thicker here, a few ink blots from where you've likely paused to think, go over each sentence in your head before writing them down.
You mention finding the Avgin dishes by reading some kind of research paper on Sigonian culture and food, but Aventurine isn't sure he can believe that. You wrote, "I was fortunate enough," yet chance alone wouldn't get you something like that. Sure, maybe some doctoral candidate was crazy enough to choose a dead planet and its deader tribes to write about, but finding that paper would be too difficult. The biggest issue, however, is that Aventurine believes this dish should not and cannot exist. The stinging nettle leaves his mother used are no longer available, and while he didn't know much about cooking at the time, he was aware that all of the spices he knew were almost extinct. He's looked enough to know.
"I'll be honest, I had some trouble locating the ingredients for it and had to swap the majority of them because I couldn't find them. I really wanted to bring back a familiar feeling, even if it tastes very different from how you remember it. Plus, it's the thought that counts, right?"
In contrast to the light-hearted language, your writing is slightly wobbly and darker here, and Aventurine wonders if you realise your emotions seep through every single one of your actions, laid bare for the world to see.
Noting the disappearance of their owner, curious, the catcakes peep into the kitchen are immediately alarmed to see their owner sitting on the counter stool, sobbing and clutching a box. Spade, unsure of what to do, nuzzles it's head on Aventurine's leg, while the others meow in an attempt to calm him down. Aventurine hasn't sobbed in a long time—he can't remember how to anymore. His body shakes with each ragged and broken sob, sounding shattered and damaged, but he can't stop.
"I hope it brings you fond memories" is what you wrote down, but are you aware of the full impact of what you did for him? Most likely not. Aventurine cherishes all of his memories, including the unpleasant ones: as long as it involves his family. His misery knows no bounds, but he's only had a few years with his sister, and even fewer with his mother. So even the saddest memories are never forgotten, so he can preserve as much of them as possible. They live through his memories, after all.
Even when plain, his mother's meals provided him with more warmth than anything else back then. To feel that warmth decades later is a blessing he can't repay— but a blessing nonetheless. He doesn't have many memories like this one either, gentle and happy, contrary to the endless memories of struggling. He remembers their love so vividly right now, feels it so strongly, alongside yours— that he has no choice but to revel in it.
(Come tomorrow , when he's sober, puffy-eyed from crying and not as vulnerable, he'll have trouble figuring your reasoning. But for now, he'll be fine. Tonight, he'll go to sleep feeling loved. Tonight, his pets will cuddle him to sleep. Tonight, he'll dream of a Sigonia Only he knows.)

In this blog, we will explore the significance and functionality of various life-saving appliances that are essential for safeguarding lives during emergencies at sea.
1. Lifeboats: Lifeboats are perhaps the most well-known life-saving appliance on ships. These sturdy vessels are designed to carry a specific number of people and are equipped with oars, paddles, or engines for mobility. Lifeboats provide a means of evacuation for passengers and crew members during emergencies, allowing them to reach safety away from the distressed ship.
2. Life Rafts: Life rafts are inflatable devices capable of accommodating several individuals. They are easily deployable and designed to provide buoyancy and shelter until rescue arrives. Life rafts come equipped with survival kits containing essential supplies like water, food rations, and signaling equipment, ensuring the occupants can sustain themselves until help arrives.
3. Lifebuoys: Lifebuoys, also known as life rings or life buoys, are floating devices designed to aid in the rescue of individuals who have fallen overboard. They provide buoyancy and visibility, making it easier for rescuers to locate and retrieve the person in distress. Lifebuoys are often equipped with reflective tape, grab lines, and lights, enhancing their effectiveness during nighttime or low visibility conditions.
4. Lifejackets: Lifejackets are personal flotation devices worn by individuals to keep them afloat in case of accidental immersion in water. They are designed to provide buoyancy and ensure that the wearer's head remains above water. Lifejackets are mandatory for all passengers and crew members on board, and they must be easily accessible and properly maintained to ensure their effectiveness.
5. Immersion Suits: Immersion suits, also known as survival suits, are designed to protect individuals from hypothermia in cold water. These suits are made from waterproof materials and provide insulation against the freezing temperatures of the sea. They are equipped with features such as reflective patches and additional flotation aids, enhancing survivability in extreme conditions.
6. Line-Throwing Devices: Line-throwing devices are essential tools for establishing a connection between a distressed vessel and a rescue team. These devices use compressed air or other mechanisms to launch a lightweight line towards the affected vessel. The line enables the crew or passengers to secure themselves and initiate rescue operations.
7. Pyrotechnics: Pyrotechnic devices, such as parachute flares, hand flares, and smoke signals, are crucial visual aids for signaling distress and attracting attention during emergencies. Parachute flares provide high-altitude illumination, hand flares emit a bright light for short-range signaling, and smoke signals produce dense smoke to indicate the position of the distressed vessel.
8. Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs): EPIRBs are electronic devices that transmit distress signals via satellite to alert search and rescue authorities about a ship's emergency situation. "Th-this is Knight Osha Rogers, Brotherhood of Steel Recon Tea- oh fuck this. I set a damn distress beacon a couple of hours ago but it's lookin like no one's comin, fogs too thick to fly the birds and I doubt Maxson would send ground troops..."
She was wrong, Maxson wouldn't ever leave a single person behind. Everyone in the Brotherhood mattered, Maxson would've sent ground troops after them- he did that very thing.
"Scribe Barclay and Knight Malcom… they have succumbed to their injuries, Barclay-god, we-we had to leave him! He...he told us... Maclcom, oh god I can still smell him. Never liked using Laser weapons, that damn ozone smell...”
She was one of the few who verbally stated her distaste for the Brotherhoods preferred choice of weapons. That smell, it left a sense of pride and authority but to her, it left a sense of dread and disgust.
"I-I'm the only one left alive...I-I don't think I'll be making it outta this one either...bleeding to damn much, things are blurry...god I'm-I'm scared..."
He knew what she was feeling, he had been in a similar situations himself when he first joined but he was younger, softer, weaker. But she was a season soldier, the commonwealth is only fit for those willing to survive and she was more then willing but to hear her begin to break down, to hear a seasoned soldier crack-it tugged on something within him.
"but I can't go without saying something, I won't forgive myself-I have to, he needs to hear this."
And he is, sitting at his terminal in his quarters, hands locked on to his hair with a grip only one would experience when face to face with a deathclaw and an automatic. It seemed like his terminal was the face of the deathclaw and he was staring the best down as his eyes were glued to the screen.
"If-if someone finds this, please, give-damnit-please give this to Palidan Danse-fuck- damn bleeding won't stop..."
Hearing her speak his name was more then spine chilling. It made his skin crawl and heart sink. She was moving, he could hear cloth being ripped up along with various human noises that would come with being in pain.
"Danse, sir, it was an honor to have you as my commanding Officer, to have been...to have been allowed this opportunity to join the Brotherhood...I, ever since I woke up from that damn vault...I-I didn't know where to start my life, my new life…if I should've just given up but- here I am. What a life I have lived."
And what a life she will live, he made sure of that.
"Bu-but that's not all I have to say, no no no, there's so much more but I don't have- god dammit I don't have the time too!"
He always held a soft spot for those assigned to his team, some spots bigger then others but he still held an aspect of fondness for people such as Haylen and even Rhy's. He could feel the tears welling up behind his closed eye lids, the liquid threatening to seep through the ends of his eyes. It's been a while since this has happened.
"Danse- I...I, fuck...you'd think with my last few breathes that a confession would be easier but-but it's not...Didn't think it was ever gonna be easy...even when I'm dying..."
She was stalling, something she frequently did. Something she frequently did when talking to him. He picked up on it shortly after she was picked to supervise the Recon mission. She'd ramble on about the most random of things and he would listen without question. Why would he do that? Why was he allowing her to doing that? He knew why but he’ll be damn to admit it.
"Danse, I have the utmost admiration and respect for you sir, you remind me so much of him."
Nate. That's who she was talking it, she never out right told him about him but he could pick it up on. He was a soldier once, a helluva good one too. She spoke rarely about him but when she did, it was in his favor. When she took him down to burry him, he could see just how much she loved him, how much this man once meant to her.
"Selfless, brave, strong, been to hell and back and yet you walk it off like nothing ever happened. I-I'm jealous of that."
Countless have walked to hell and back so why would his suffering cause her to be jealous, he felt like he couldn't amount to those before him, that he was mediocre, just doing the bare minimum that the Brotherhood asked for. He doesn't think he deserves the rank he holds.
"I'm sure that what I will say and have said will mean little to you, that you've heard these words before and they lost thier value a long time ago but-dammit- I, I have to get it off my chest-"
Intentional or not, she had always kept him on the edge of his seat. Every single folder, holotape, note, word spoken, eye glance, touch, everything damn thing she did kept him on suspense. A state of wondering when it would happen? Will it happen? Would anything ever happen? He needed something to happen or else he would be stuck, always longing for more.
"I-you mean so much more to me then you were ever suppose to be. You're so much more then just my comma-commanding officer, so much more then my Palidan, so much more then someone to watch my back-"
As if time wasn't already slow enough, this paused seemed enteral. The seconds stopped ticking, the world stopped spinning and the whole damn earth fell silent. The only noise was the damn holotape player stuck in his terminal, buzzing and humming away.
"You mean the world to me, Danse, I-oh fuck...Danse I love you-“
That was unexpected but he'll be damed if he said he wasn't relieved. A weight had been hoisted off his chest and shoulders but was it real? Could she really love him? Things are often said in the heat of passion, with what she thought was her last living breathes, could she had twisted up her words? Accidentally said that she loved but meant something else? Did she really love him?
That damn enteral silence was back again. It felt so realistic, like this was happening in real time. The silence was there so they could gather their thoughts before speaking again but it wasn't true, the silence was there because a distant voice entire the room and silenced her.
Mechanical and lifeless. A Synth.
And then the end.
