“Hey, where are you going?” Hartley wants to know, looking up from his book. He looks at Cisco with wide eyes, clearly confused rather than curious.

Cisco supposes he gets it – until now they had been chilling on the couch together, each of them reading their own book – or comic, in his case – but enjoying each other’s company. But there’s just been something that’s been driving him up the wall. So Cisco’s just gotten up from the couch, meaning to leave the room. Only that Hartley stopped him before he could take a single step.

“I’m– Your stimming was kinda distracting me, so I’m gonna go into the bedroom,” Cisco says, pointing towards it before gesturing at Hartley. “Which is fine! Don’t stop on my account! Whatever helps you concentrate, dude.”

Automatically, Hartley scrunches up his face like he always does when Cisco calls him “dude”. It’s fine when Eddie or Ronnie do it, but he basically recoils when Cisco does it. Because, as Hartley put it so delicately after having spent a day too many with Wally (who is also welcome to call him “dude”, by the way) it “gives him the ick”. Something about the word being reserved for friends rather than boyfriends. Hartley has a knack for language-things like that, but Cisco’s known that, of course.

But instead of focusing on that, a second later the annoyance vanishes from Hartley’s face and makes way for confusion again. “My what?” He asks.

2.) What is your least favorite trope to write?

Of tropes I've actually written? Probably soulmates. While I enjoy the world building challenge it can present, particularly in finding ways to subvert or interrogate the inherent amatonormativity of the trope... well, I mean, there's still the inherent amatonormativity of the trope. So soulmates is definitely a concept I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with as a result.

6.) The fic you’re least proud of writing?

Probably one of my Eureka fics that I still haven't brought over to Ao3 from FFnet. I enjoyed writing the fics and liked them at the time, but my opinion of the show soured over it's continual bad treatment of it's autistic character. I could probably still get lost in the weeds rambling about how awful his treatment was, but suffice it to say that I was no longer comfortable remaining in the otherwise very pleasant and welcoming Eureka fandom when I felt that way about the show overall. While I'm not ashamed of the fics or anything, I don't really have the pride in them I used to.

Similarly, the few things I've written for the Harry Potter fandom and the ideas I had for further fics that I will likely never write. With how I feel about JKR and how she weaponizes the attention she, and her creations, receives, I can't really take pride in my own fanfics written for that fandom anymore.

7.) Favorite ship to write?

Cisco Ramon/Hartley Rathaway (Hartmon). This one's been my fav for quite a few years now, though I still have a very fond spot for Yuri Lowell/Flynn Scifo (Fluri) from Tales of Vesperia. That was my biggest fav before I started watching The Flash.

17.) Favorite AU to write?

Canon divergence AUs. I love a good 'what if x happened differently' scenario so much. It's fun for fix fics, of course... but it's just fun to speculate on all kinds of stuff too.

some headcanons for my weird dctv incarnation of jerrie rathaway nobody asked for, but i’m doing anyway just because

She’s 12 years younger than Hartley, and around 12-14 years old in the present timeline (which is set all the way back when his episodes were aired lmao). When she was born, he felt threatened by the new baby in the house and didn’t like her at all, but as they both grew up, they developed a very close bond. Her love and loyalty towards him are absolutely forces to be reckoned with. 

She’s autistic and possibly ADHD comorbid (as is Hartley in my headcanons, but he was undiagnosed). She’s verbal and was given the high-functioning label, but obviously, the spectrum’s broader than that for us, so she still has her differences and struggles. Her parents tend to treat her like she’s a problem to be solved when they’re not talking down to her and being overprotective. She loved them in spite of all this growing up, but after they disowned Hartley and cut him out of her life, she began to resent them and rebel more.

Her special interest is books (mainly works of fiction that have a magical quality about them, but also nonfiction if it’s a topic she’s interested in) and she has a library all to herself in the Rathaway mansion. She’s also very fond of the ocean, marine science, and spends a considerable amount of time in the water whenever she can (swimming is a largely sensory experience for her). 

She’s shy and awkward when you first meet her, but she has a gigantic heart and definitely a more spirited streak once she opens up, and a cold and cunning one not that different from her big brother’s if she and hers are crossed. 

She’s prone to daydreaming, waxing poetic or philosophical, and has a hard time getting a grip on her sometimes turbulent emotions. Inspirations for her character were Sara Crewe, Alice, the Baudelaire kids, Hotaru Tomoe, and Claudia from Interview with the Vampire to name a few. 

Whether Hartley kidnaps her in his rogue continuity or their parents let her stay with him in the 2x17 retcon, they have a dusty old seaside house with stained glass windows that’s almost always kept dark or dimly-lit. One of Jerrie’s favorite stims is dancing in the cracks of colored light that come through the windows in her (lucky for Jerrie, petite) great-grandmother’s 1910s era gown that was passed on to and is very special to her. 

In the AU where she’s metahuman (not sure if I’ll run with that as a main verse or not yet), her eyes will roll back and take on a creepy green glow as she activates her power of hypnotization, most often via her singing voice. However, because she was affected so young, she struggles to control her powers and has a lot of strange episodes, some of which involve sleepwalking in a hypnotized state herself. 

In the 2x17 retcon verse, she is friendly with Caitlin Snow as their temperaments are somewhat similar, and they’d have a lot of Intellectual™ stuff to bond over.

If Hartley didn't have a handsome boyfriend waiting for him back home, he'd have probably been tempted.

Ok, so, I am now going to talk about a subject very near to my heart. Specifically...

This dork. Hartley Rathaway, alias Thomas Peterson, alias Henry Darrow. The Pied Piper and the character who single-handedly got me into the Flash rogues long before the CW show finished the job with Wentworth Miller’s Captain Cold (who will find his way into E37 at some point, have no fear.) Also one of the only redeeming features of Countdown to Final Crisis, which will not be making it in.

I’m combining elements of the CW and comics versions for this one, as you do - in this case, he’s still got his comicsverse disability - born deaf to seriously ableist parents who took it upon themselves to ‘fix’ his disability with cutting-edge experimental surgery, replacing most of the workings of his inner ear. He developed a fascination with sound and music, which he saw as the one consolation of what had been done to him, and also became quite a talented musician. One older sister, Jerrie, who is autistic and in a private home paid for by their parents Rachel and Osgood Rathaway, who have never been shy about regarding both of their children as failures. When, at seventeen, Hartley came out to his parents as gay they disowned him and cut all ties, including doing their utmost to prevent him from seeing his sister. This world’s Piper then turned to crime to support himself. Always something of a mechanical as well as a musical prodigy, he developed his first hypnotic flute from scraps and spare parts while living on the streets, and established himself as the Pied Piper at nineteen, only to be quickly snapped up by Captain Cold and his Rogues, who had a) high enough standards for Piper to feel comfortable working for them and b) tended to get into less trouble than Piper did on his own, even going up against the Flash.

Piper had started out stealing to survive, and he did indeed support himself off the proceeds of his crimes, but he also donated large amounts of his take to various charities in support of the homeless, and tended to prefer to target big businesses and the corrupt elite, framing himself almost as a Robin-Hood-type stealing from the rich to give to the poor. This did not especially impress Barry Allen, the second Flash, and so Piper’s reform and move into more legitimate social work didn’t happen until Barry was consumed by the Speed Force and Wally West, the former Kid Flash, became the new Flash.

Also, he’s going to end up with James Jesse, the original Trickster, at some point. Because of course he is, it’s the ship that got me into the Flash and if I can’t indulge my shippy streak with canonically queer villains, who can I indulge it with?

what I think is fucking hilarious: she has threatened to fight hartley’s boyfriends on numerous occassions despite her being only ~13

what is heart-crushing and awful but fun to inflict on friends: she technically isn’t legally allowed to see hartley because of bullshit parental reasons
