Plasma (Law x GN!Reader)
Tumblr media
Summary: Law never brings up his tattoos and their story. Then you ask him one day.
Word Count: 1,056
Read on Ao3
Tumblr media
Dividers By: @cafekitsune (thank you for all of your work!)
Notes: My thoughts about Law's tattoos and how Corazon caught fire spiraled into this. I also don't go in depth with the Donquixote Family side of matters, including the exact details of Cora's spying and muteness. It's mostly just a conversation between Law and the reader about his tattoos that could be read platonically or romantically. My medical knowledge isn't up to par with Law's, but I did my best.
Takes place sometime post-Zou.
Unedited (mostly) but I'm still happy with how it turned out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fun facts:
Ancient tattoo pigments were made from soot, charcoal, and such.
Plasma is a component of blood, but it is also used to describe a state of matter. Whether or not fire is a plasma depends mostly on its temperature.
Tumblr media
It feels like an eon has passed since the question left your lips, tumbling to the ground between the two of you like dried timber ready to catch flame. Lawā€™s lips parted, his eyes widened almost imperceptibly, but he tugged his hat over his face and schooled his expression with such rapidity you would have thought you offended him. But you know him better. Offering him your silence while he gathered himself wasnā€™t uncommon in this relationship, and Law was grateful for it right now as his inked hands ran through his hair.
He sighed, a sound of his relentment, and let his power take you to his quarters. For his own privacy. He wasnā€™t one to show vulnerability. Between his duties as captain and doctor, as well as his troubled past, you knew he had to be quick to think and act. Emotions would only hinder that swiftness required for survival.
Law starts with his hands, the word DEATH across both knuckles. The irony of his profession is not lost on you until he detailed Doflamingoā€™s plot for Law to give his own life for the bastardā€™s eternal one. If Doflamingo wanted life, the healing touch of a doctor, Law would be certain that he would never get it. When you point out that most tattoos across the first phalanges face away from the owner of them, Law corrected you.
ā€œProximal phalanges.ā€
ā€œWhatever.ā€
You punctuated your statement with an eye roll and continued listening to him. He obtained his Devil Fruit powers before his tattoos, this you knew, but since ascertaining much of his abilities he decided on the placement of the tattoos. Not only for that pink feathered demon, but also for his enemies in general. A warning for what was to become of them.
The back of his hand related to his medical knowledge, as did the central part of the forearm design. And the surrounding prongs of his Jolly Roger. All symbolizing the extruding envelope proteins of a virus. The remaining circular designs on his forearms were both reminiscent of another virus design but also incorporated the Room ability of his powers. The spiked spheres surrounding the viral symbols representing another aspect of his doctoral talents, much like the rest of his ink explained thus far.
ā€œItā€™s also a lymphocyte eradicating a virus.ā€
ā€œA what?ā€
ā€œA white blood cell.ā€
ā€œOh. Well, at least your Jolly Roger tat is self-explanatory.ā€
ā€œYes and no, Iā€™ll get to that.ā€
He took a deep breath, steading himself once more. Then he removes his shirt, folding it neatly beside him on the bed. He scratched at the back of his head, his ink stretching and flexing with the skin it's permanently embedded in. Law lets his arms fall back to his sides.
ā€œI never tell those about the man that saved meā€¦ā€
But here he was, detailing his early years to you regardless. You listen quietly, giving him the space to dredge the words up through memories long buried. The fire set to his hometown. The loss of his loved ones. The manipulation of Doflamingo and the subsequent escape with his brother.
ā€œCorazon means heart. His brother awarded him the Heart Seat when he returned, feigning mutenessā€¦ā€
So this was how his upper arms earned their hearts, you thought, for the one who saved him.
ā€œMuteness?ā€
ā€œPart of his cover, let me get there.ā€œ
And apparently Corazon held a clumsy streak, nearly setting himself on fire multiple times. Law went off the subject for a moment to list the various pranks the other Donquixote family members would play on the poor guy. But as it turned out, Law found out that Doffyā€™s younger brother was a commander in the Marines. No one called him by his real name, except his eldest brother as Rosinante lay on his deathbed of snow.
ā€œWhen I first joined the family, Corazon would try his hardest to get me to leave. He didnā€™t like seeing children under his brotherā€™s influence.ā€
A pang echoed in your chest, like a can crumpling. No one should have been under that influence, but you kept this to yourself. You had decided you had interrupted Law enough during his explanation and that you didnā€™t want him to recede back internally with the memories. It was best that he lay them out, like his surgical tools cleansed and neatly arranged to be used for his benefit. Perhaps it was a good thing, you thought, for him to get all of this off of his chest. Though the ink would stay.
ā€œThe last time I saw him was with this huge grinā€¦ā€
He gestured to the Jolly Roger embroidered on your clothes. A toothy, rebellious smile. Much like the tattoos on his hands, that defiant DEATH in the face of Doflamingo. You let out a low chuckle, letting your thoughts process it all.
ā€œAnd this heartā€¦ā€
He placed a hand over his chest now, palm covering that miniature grin as if to hold Corazon. Above his fingers spread the tendrils of flame, curved and clinging to his clavicles in such a way that they shifted and flickered like a real blaze.
ā€œā€¦Well, he was named for a heart and he caught on fire a lotā€¦ā€
Lawā€™s sweet, you realized, and had a wicked sense of humor. He elaborated that it initially symbolized that burning revenge he felt, a scorching desire to overcome the Heavenly Demon and take victory over him in memory of Corazon. Thoughts swirled in your head, ashes swept up by smoke. The conversation smoldered and glowed now like the remnants of the campfire on Zou, still warm and comforting against the chill of night.
ā€œHow come you never tell anyone else about your tattoos?ā€
ā€œToo much explanation.ā€
ā€œThen how come you told me?ā€
Law smirked and replied, ā€œI donā€™t think I need to worry about you.ā€
Cryptic as always, you lamented, but heā€™s right. You werenā€™t one for divulging otherā€™s secrets. Even as the conversation died out and Law shrugged his shirt back on, you couldnā€™t help but wonder if thereā€™s anyone else that Law would let under his skin. If one day, the bridge between the two of you gave way to an inferno. That he would then collect the soot and charcoal left over, as deep as the pigment thatā€™s marked on his body.

i believe that shipping tentoo/rose and recognizing that the way it happened was fucked on the doctor's end and traumatic on the end of rose herself can coexist. saying both of these things do not contradict each other.
i can say that the metacrisis is still the doctor and say that rose was right at first to say "he's not you," because of the context rose has in the moment and the work rose had put into finding the doctor that she conceptualized as the doctor.
i can also say that he tried to manipulate her into choosing the metacrisis because that is what he believed was best for her, even though i can also say she did choose to kiss the metacrisis in her own right.
and finally, i can say, that it was fucked up he left her in norway, solely because, bro, that's a long way away from where they need to go lol.

itā€™s like baby gorl thereā€™s no way I, the author who wrote the fic youā€™re commenting on and who is the intended audience for this comment, am gonna agree with you šŸ˜æšŸ™ some things can just stay on your chest šŸ™
#thereā€™s a threshold I think of what I accept in comments about characters#and their actions or about who is in the wrong or what should happen#because I do like reading peopleā€™s opinions#and sometimes when someone is like I didnā€™t like obi-wan in this fic#Iā€™m like makes sense! maybe you werenā€™t supposed to or maybe the argument they had was supposed to not be clear cut on who is right#because arguments in real life donā€™t always have a clear cut winner or morally superior person lmao#Iā€™m ok with that Iā€™m ok with comments saying boo this character is annoying#because sometimes they just are (eg the amount of people who just donā€™t like obiwan in pbatmb like?? yeah of course heā€™s not gonna be nice#but I digress lol#anyway but thereā€™s a threshold of when comments about not liking a character go too far and youā€™re just like.#saying mean things about the writing itself and thatā€™s not something lm gonna allow to be normalized#no matter the intention behind it#you do not type a comment like this knowing it wil be send to an author#who will get an email notification about a comment#click on it and go oooo long comment :D and then go oh.#you donā€™t do that itā€™s rude itā€™s being a jerk#Iā€™ve been here for like 3 almost 4 years I feel ancient in this fandom sometimes#and Iā€™ve gotten so much feedback on my work through that time and so many nice comments and community#but mean comments can really hurt especially new writers#and they can make people who maybe would write fic for a fandom decide to not#like this isnā€™t even that mean I can almost see the writer just wanting to say how they feel#but sometimes you do not have to šŸ™#also I just think this understanding of the characterizations in the fic and probably their understanding of the characters in the films#is a wee bit trash but thatā€™s for me to say in the long tags of my own blog post and not for me to comment on their fics for the fandom#(they donā€™t have any but I did check because 3am kit felt nosy)

Honestly we could REALLY get into the fact that a lot of the insanity in Acotar is an excellent exercise in why you can't really separate the art from the author.
Sjm's zionism is OBVIOUS in the text. The ic destabilize governments to the detriment of people they will never have to care for, steal artifacts from other countries, displace people, cause invasions, commit war crimes for 50 years "for the greater good" all while their own people are living under unchecked brutality and poverty.
They are rich megalomaniacs that care for no one but themselves and their own emotional and material satisfaction and they are PRAISED for it. In fact anyone who even remotely disagrees with the IC is almost always one of the villains in the story (Beron, Tamlin, etc) as if to condition the reader that asking questions that are critical of the IC puts you on the wrong side of the narrative morally.
All of that sounds REALLL familiar huh?

I really do love your writing and Salvage gets me through when I am sad or depressed. However, I was wondering, how do you cope when someone who wrote a review didnā€™t like your writing? If youā€™ve had this beforeā€¦ I had one today and I am dejected. Iā€™m working through my perfectionism and I keep telling myself, ā€œmy writing isnā€™t for everyone and itā€™s okay.ā€ Any advice?
If it was unsolicited, especially on a fanfic? Delete it, block the person if you feel like, then go do your rage activity of choice before forgetting about it forever. That person is rude and doesn't deserve your time anymore than someone bumping into you on the street.
I've also found it useful to actively think of my fanfic as writing practice, and not even my brain expects perfection from writing practice. It also frees you do Try Cool Things.
Now take this digital blanket and cup of hot chocolate and go reread your nice comments.

I have this weird stance on ratiorine where, on one hand, I ship them most fervently, on the other hand I don't want to know anything about their relationship. I have a sense it would cause irreversible psychic damage if I knew.

I adore how Tatsuya Endo writes his characters, especially the women. They can be warm, soft, cute, cool, tough, scary... all, if not most, of his ladies in Spy x Family are equally wonderful in their own way, both in character design and personality.

Hello, I started following your blog pretty recently and I agree with most of what you think. I felt so confused when I finished the books and came on tumblr to see everyone hailing malina as the perfect relationship and I was glad to know that I wasn't the only one who disliked him.
I wanted to ask you something, im not sure if I saw this on this blog, but someone said that zoya is an example of toxic feminism in YA fantasy. Which checked out to me, but it also felt that bardugo added misogyny, feminism and toxic feminism in the SaB series.
Misogyny since alina had to face sloot-shaming in every book (almost entirely by Malyen ugh šŸ˜’). I felt that she really tried and suceeded to be feminist with genya, since she actually stood up for herself and had many facets to her personality. She also wasn't an important character just because of her beauty or anything super superficial. Genya IS a strong female character, and she wasn't 'broken' by the king, despite the foul things he did.
But zoya.. my god, I really wanted to like her, but I just couldn't. She is mean and hot headed to the point where I really don't see any redeeming factors to her. I always liked 'mean girl character who isnt as shallow as she seems' in fantasy novels, but she didnt exactly have a redemption arc either. If the darkling had warned her about expanding the fold in the first book, she would have fought for him. I think she isnt a strong female character, but just a girl who is a bully and decided to help mc since the antagonist hurt her specifically. She doesnt even think of the other casualties of novokribirsk. I think the 'break nikolais heart, I'll comfort him and make a magnificent queen' part was a joke, but still....
Please excuse my yapping. I haven't read crooked kingdom and nikolais duology, so I don't know if the characters had any developement since then, so please ignore any innacuracies of this text pertaining to that. Do you have any thoughts on this?
(Do you allow emoji annons? If so, can I be šŸŽ€ annon?)
(Of course I do! You can use any emoji you want and ribbons remind me of coquettish things šŸ˜)
Genya in S&B was my favorite version of her. She was traumatised by the King's abuse, that's true. But she wasn't solely that.
(Here's a meta about that version of her that I once did)
She was very brave, vengeful, intelligent, politically aware, had a sense of humor and was kind. There were different aspects to her personality and wasn't solely "the victim" as many fans of the Grishaverse like to portray her. But in Nikolai's duology Bardugo either forgot how to write complex situations within a court or just doesn't know how to (or it doesn't suit her šŸ™ƒ).
She threw all the blame to the Darkling (as if he was entirely at fault for her sexually abuse), forgot that Grisha were serfs meant to please and serve the royal family (hence why the Darkling gave her to the Queen) and also forgot how it was the Queen who withdrew her protection and allowed her husband to abuse her. Also, a slight amnesia to how Genya herself decided to stay and take revenge. Essentially, the character became Leigh's mouthpiece to remind the reader that the Darkling is a heartless motherfucker that is undeserving of redemption. How banal.
Now about Zoya. Zoya is the typical female character that we encounter in media nowadays. A girlboss that kicks ass, is rude, has no sensitivity and threatens everyone. Again, clichƩ. But Leigh broke her own in-universe laws when she gave Zoya the protagonist's role.
Meaning:
The narrative with Alina as a protagonist: "You can't have feelings for your enemy!! You can't be independent! You need to depend on your toxic, childhood friend and...what is this? Power?? You took three amplifiers?? WELL SAY GOODBYE TO YOUR POWERS THAT KEEP YOU HEALTHY AND STRONG!!"
The narrative with Zoya as a protagonist: "Take the amplifiers, take the power to turn into a dragon, let's also have a Saint in your head giving you advice and guess?!? You just got promoted into a Queen and soon enough you will marry the love of your life!! Kudos!!"
That's basically what happened.
It would be an amazing end if only:
- Otkazat'sya didn't hate the Grisha's guts.
- Zoya had the qualities of a leader and a Queen instead of being handed the throne on a silver plate from an illegitimate son who failed in his job.
- The author didn't break her own rules just to prove and show how "awesome" her protagonists are.
- The same author didn't copy paste the storyline of Daenerys Targaryen into Zoya's (somehow she needed to appear cool and sympathetic)
- Half of the fandom didn't hate the primary protagonists now than they ever did before.
So basically Leigh infuriated the fandom even more about Alina's fate when she gave Zoya everything.
And about your question if the characters had any development in the later books after the trilogy. I've got some bad news, my friend. šŸ„²
