8. Something you love to see in dialogue.

I think dialogue is my favorite place to put surprising insights into a character’s personality/worldview. Because not only is it a fun little window into their world for the reader, but then you have the opportunity for another character to react to that revelation, which tells you more about them. The efficiency pleases me. Two birds with one stone, and all that. 

15. We all project onto our characters. Where has your personality or life choices leaked onto the page the most?

Honestly? In the sex scene I wrote. I’ve never written one before and I went into it thinking I would be striving for a really sultry vibe but just could not get myself to leave out the humor and the overthinking that’s most often a part of my experience. I’m a very embarrassing person, so whenever I embarrass my characters it gives me the same high as recycling or composting. Making an ass out of myself never goes wasted, u kno?

But when McGonagall summons Hermione, her co-head Justin and the other seven and eighth-year prefects for an extraordinary meeting ahead of term, Hermione just knows something’s about to change. And indeed: as August turns into September, Hermione finds herself working to fit Draco Malfoy into her schedule.

Between Ginny (who has her own schemes), Justin (whose actions becomes odder and odder by the day), and Mandy (whom Hermione never thought of as an enemy before), will Hermione manage to retain her sanity, whilst restoring some sense of normality for once?

A Few More Notes on Fest Structure

Because I really don’t know how to be brief. Okay, so! As this is Edition 1 of the fest this is all a bit experimental. I divided all the readers into groups of 5-6 based on reading preferences. I then assigned each fic to two groups (so each fic will be read by 10-12 people). I’M NOT REALLY SURE WHAT HAPPENS NOW. I’d love for this event to be interactive & community-building-y so I welcome any and all ideas of how to make that happen. Some of my ideas:

So I haven't read much lately because I'm really trying to finish FWWL and the Jewish holidays are this month. I looked on my last reddit post in the what are you reading thread of Aug 20 (yes, it was that long ago) and this is what I had:

Mind and Body by Sarena This author recently had her fic taken down from ff net (as well as a few others but this was the first) without warning, so I read it on AO3 in solidarity. It was written for the Deflowering Draco fest and I loved it. Dorky Virgin Draco and his techniques of seduction leave much to be desired. But he catches on quickly, especially if Hermione knows what she wants and is willing to go after it. The ficlet is told from his POV and his internal monologue with all the fumbling and second guessing is hot and hilarious. Despite all that, Sarena knows how to write sexual tension. The flirting and banter was excellent.

Blind Scene by Mizdemeanor. Sequel to Restraint, in which Hermione and Draco are professors at Hogwarts and are both switches. So far, both one shots showcase a dominant Hermione, which is always refreshing to read. More please! The dynamic is firm but sweet and she tortures Draco in the most delicious way. Everything they do is tied to their mental states, it's not just smut for the sake of smut.

sh-shopping spree by thelastlynx. Hot and decadent with sexual tension up the wazoo. Sights and smells and sounds and touches. Incredibly descriptive wet dreams. Aside from how purely decadent this was, I enjoyed watching Hermione blast Draco's stuffy pure blood ideals out of the water. This Draco is probably the poshest Draco you'll ever read. And Hermione is going to ruin him.

You’re probably familiar with @xravenslight for her amazing writing (check out her current WIP, Queen of Swords!), but today, let’s get to know her as the Beta behind some amazing stories!

How long have you been a Beta? What got you started as a Beta?

I've been betaing since the fall of 2017. I volunteered to beta for a one-shot in Strictly Dramione and have been betaing pretty steadily since.

What projects have you worked on as a Beta? What has been your favorite part about working on those projects?

Oh gosh, a lot. It's easier to go by author name than list them all.

I've betaed several one-shots for NuclearNik, lots of pieces for LadyKenz347, some for CourtingInsanity, HufflepuffMommy, In Dreams, mcal, msmerlin13, ElleMalfoy65, MourningMadam, Disenchantedglow, TheLastLynx, naarna, CassiopeiaAnjouMalfoy, and dreamsofdramione. I'm sure I'm forgetting some though; these are just who I remember off the top of my head.

I think my favorite part of working with so many different authors is getting to see both their process and appreciate the different styles each author has. None of them approach writing the same way, so it's a testament to the wide range of talents the fandom has (and I get to read all the good stuff first lol).

If you are also a writer: 1) Did you first start off in fanfiction as a writer or an editor? 2) What do you find easier or more natural for you: writing or editing?

I started editing and writing about the same time. I've always been more comfortable as an editor though. I think editing is my comfort zone, so it's what I tend to fall back on.

For those who are considering being an Alpha/Beta, what advice can you give them? 

Make sure the relationship is going to work. Alphaing and betaing takes up a lot of your time, particularly longer stories, so it's really important that you develop a relationship with the person you'll be working with. If you're just not feeling the story or feeling the relationship, it's okay to say no or let them know you need to step down. It's awkward and it's hard, but betaing/alphaing requires a certain level of trust, and if you don't have that (whether you're the beta/alpha or the author), I really do encourage you to voice those problems and either work it out or graciously take a step back.

Also, Google is your friend! If you don't know the answer to something, Google it! Make friends who are in the fandom or writing in general and ask their advice. You're never in it alone, and no one has all the answers all the time.

Share with us your go-to tip for editing!

I'm ruthless with my own work. If it doesn't feel like it's working, that ish has to goooo.

However, I'm really careful with other people's work, and I always try to read through the chapter/piece once before I beta it, particularly if I haven't worked with a person before. Beyond making sure the piece is grammatically sound, I try to be mindful of the person's voice; I can't do that if I haven't read the piece in its entirety before working on it. For authors I've worked with before, it's a little easier because I already have a sense of how they write. But for those I haven't worked with, I want to make sure the changes I'm making aren't taking away from their style and their voice; at the end of the day, my job is to make their work polished, not change how they write.

And always pro-Oxford comma ;)

I honestly don't know my Patronus anymore. On the old Pottermore, it was a hedgehog, but I haven't taken it on the new site yet.

Their adventures lead them through the whole of history and the unwritten expanse of the future. Hermione learns about the History of Magic and Draco learns about science, Muggles, and falling in love.

However, there are fixed points in time, events so important that they cannot be altered. Hermione Granger’s tragic life as an Unspeakable is one of those points, and nothing Draco can do will change the path they’re forced to follow.

Hi there, thanks so much for the lovely ask! I hope you don’t mind me taking a couple days to answer this because I wanted to give it some thought. There are SO many amazing writers in the HP fandom, particularly in the Dramione ship, and we’re definitely spoiled by the level of talent around here. I think it’s a great idea to spread the love around!

I’m going to make a list, and I want to clarity that I don’t think these are all “lesser known” authors. Some are writers whose work I’ve only recently started to read and enjoy, and some are authors whose work I think deserves more recognition. Lastly... there’s no way I can tag everyone so these are just a few of a frankly inexhaustible list. I hope you find something to your interests!
