Hello everyone! Before proceeding I would like to explain the list I made, first of all, these are based on the fics I've been reading since April because before that I didn't make monthly fic recs and didn't have a proper tag for the fics I read. In the end, just scrolling endlessly through my posts to find the fics I read before would take too long so I decided to just start with April 💜 this are the fics that I've thought about constantly during the boring days.
fyi the numbers are just there to show how many, they don't mean anything. Also before clicking, please read all the warnings the author's put before proceeding.
I will also be doing a separate December fic recs post since I read a lot that I enjoyed but didn't include here.
Ngl, it was really hard to pick my top five and I would like to take this as an opportunity to say a huge thank you to everyone who created, consumed, or simply been a part of all the content flow. You are all fantastic; my year would be way worse without you all. The comfort I received from all of these is indescribable.
Categories:
Marvel ➞ peter parker, moonknight, doctor strange
Series ➞ AU's, horror vibes, fluff/slice of life, hurt/comfort
Part 2 because tumblr is annoying and glitching or there's too many links we will never know
The Mandalorian ➞ no categories direct top five
Miscellaneous Fandom ➞ no categories direct top five

𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐕𝐄𝐋
𝐏𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫
Ridiculous by @peterthepark (tasm!peter)
This one I thought so much about and took inspiration from whenever I wrote a fic where the characters got high. It's sensual, spicy, and blond peter parker is an absolute menace.
2. Hide and Seek by @softtdaisy (tasm!peter)
This is incredibly soft with the perfect amount of feels. It's rare that I read anything without smut (what can I say, I'm thirsty always) but this one was amazing and just screams peter parker to me.
3. Sweet Girl of Mine by @inklore (tasm!peter)
this was one of the first things I read of Laura's and fell in love immediately. Peter is a menace in this one and if you want that man to praise you this fic is the way to go.
Peter, Alone by @light-yaers (peter parker x michelle)
I was deep into the mcu!peter x Michelle hole and while scouring tumble for fics for them this one popped up, still to this day I think about this. The angst, the hurt, it's all in here and I love it.
𝐌𝐨𝐨𝐧𝐤𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭
Condemnation in Disguise by @inklore (marc spector)
This is one of those fics I think about again and again, I couldn't shake this one off after reading it for a while. I was just in love. The way you write the toxicity laced with love is stunning, this is one of my all-time favorites. Everything about this one is so raw and enticing.
2. Venus, Planet of Love by @peterthepark (steven grant)
The voice of Steven is stunning here. If you love friends to lovers I'm here to say that this is the one. It has all the feels and whenever I read it I just feel nice and fuzzy (and also horny because damn the smut is stunning)
3. Spirals and Skin by @clints-lucky-arrow (steven grant)
As someone with tattoos, I was mesmerized by this. I still think about how desperate Steven was in the kitchen and how he painted readers tattoos. Just amazing, I love it so much.
4. Mirror's Edge by @astroboots (marc , steven)
I will never, ever, forget this one. Especially the ending with steven being so comforting and coming out, and the writing stunning. The emotions I felt while reading this was so real.
5. Talking Shadows by @foli-vora (khonshu)
Yes, Khonshu. The writing is beautiful, the feeling, and the way Khonshu is constantly talking in the background. I couldn't forget this one even if I tried.
𝐃𝐨𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞
Once Upon A Dream by @wint3r-h3art (sinister strange)
Ngl after multiverse of madness my love for Doctor Strange took quite a large hit BUT Linda's writing in this was amazing and one of the doctor strange fics that stuck with me still to this day. It's dark, emotional and fantastic
𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐒
𝐀𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞
In The Dark by @frannyzooey (ezra)
I'm pretty sure anyone who knows me knows how much I adore this series. It's my comfort, my safe space and Kelli's writing is to die for. The emotions this fic has is brilliant and I'll never forget it.
2. Stay Close by @ezrasbirdie (pero trovar)
This series has everything; action, spice, fluff, hurt/comfort. It's everything wrapped in an absolutely beautifully written package. I love it, one of the rare fics that I truly relate to the reader. I can never have too much of it.
3. Sex Worker!frankie morales au by @prolix-yuy (frankie morales)
This one feels like a nice warm bowl of soup on a cold day. It has all the feels, amazing story-building and the smut is delicious. I cannot recommend this one enough. One of my favorite frankie's.
4. Palomino by @fuckyeahdindjarin (jack daniels)
Another one of my comfort fics, cowboy jack is truly something else and a threat of giving me a heart attack. This fic is charming, the mutual pining is everything and I have no idea what I would do without it.
5. Mutual by @the-scandalorian (din djarin)
This is just one of those stories that makes me feel so much. I love Din in this, I love their relationship and how they come together. The drabble for the series absolutely wrecked my heart. It's hot, it's emotional and reader is one I can relate to. Just perfect.
𝒉𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒓𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔:
Celestial Navigation by @write-and-buried (dieter bravo)
The storytelling and world-building here is phenomenal. One of my favorite Dieter's and the fact that this is a coffee shop AU makes it even better. I will never forget the dirty talking in this, NEVER.
Adversity by @the-ginger-hedge-witch (ezra & frankie morales)
One of my favorite westerns to date, I love the combination of ezra and frankie and adore the way their relationship grows when a third is added. The writing is amazing and one of those fics I can't simply read forever.
Meant to be by @radiowallet (oberyn martell)
I honestly think that I don't scream about this one enough. Cat manages to show paintings with nothing but words and the story, the arranged marriage, the soulmates, everything about it is beautiful.
Darkroom Din by @honestly-shite
I love the details in this one of my other favorite Din's to read, the atmosphere and tension are so vivid in my head that I could legit feel it in my heart, just excellent.
𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐫 𝐕𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐬
Still of the Night by @foli-vora (frankie morales)
This one sends chills down my spine, the raw fear and emotion this fic has are outstanding and memorable. I still have the scene with the radio locked in my head, giving me a good little fear when nighttime rolls around. (and the adorable chip is a huge bonus)
2. Like a Moth To the Flame by @the-scandalorian (din djarin)
Monster Din is one of the best creations and I adore him. The word you built with this one is so vivid and as I said before whenever it rains I think about them, monster!din going on a hunt lives rent-free in my mind, and the scene where reader is taking a dip in the lake.
3. Postcards by @write-and-buried (joel miller)
Reading this gave me goosebumps, everything that happens in it feels so real and I love how tense everything feels from chapter one. One of the joel fics that inspire me the most.
4. Reflective by @prolix-yuy (max phillips)
I screamed about this to you multiple times but honestly, this two-parter lives rent-free in my head. Especially the scene after reader leaves, absolutely horrifying and sexy, best of both worlds.
𝐅𝐥𝐮𝐟𝐟/𝐒𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞
Homecoming by @astroboots (frankie morales, santiago garcia)
Ah yes, homecoming. My second biggest comfort fic. It seriously helped me through a lot and everything about it I love. One of my favorite portrayals of Santiago, I relate to him a ridiculous amount and this series will forever live in my heart.
2. Stranger At My Gate by @leslie-lyman (pero tovar)
This is the perfect holiday/winter read. I love this one a not-so-normal amount, it gives me all the feels, laughter, and all the good warm fuzzy feelings. I love the story-telling, the magic, and your pero I adore.
3. Learning curves by @ezrasbirdie (frankie morales)
I read this when I wasn't in such a good place mentally and I swear that it healed me. The emotion, the fluff, the angst, all of it combined in this masterpiece of a series. I feel seen with this one and will never forget the frankie x benny x reader threesome. Live rent free in my head always.
4. Like a River by @radiowallet (marcus moreno, frankie morales)
I remember reading this like it was yesterday. The way their relationship blooms and forms despite the awkward moments is stunning and the way you thread everything together is outstanding. Again, like with all your works, I am in awe of your talent of making the reader able to literally see what you're describing.
Calculated Risks by @pedrito-friskito (dieter bravo)
This fic is the perfect friends-to-lovers story to me, I love the fact that it grew into something more after a one shot and the way you have written their relationship growing and evolving is heartwarming. One of my favorite Dieter's.
𝒉𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒓𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔:
Desires & Complications by @ezrasbirdie (marcus pike & dave york)
Reading this was an amazing treat, I loved every bit of it. The way Marcus called dave for help, the way Marcus realizes things about his sexuality, I love this one with all my heart. I never thought about Marcus & Dave before and this fic just opened my eyes. So emotional and comforting.
A Room With A View by @absurdthirst (zach wellinson)
The first Zach fics I read and it was amazing. I love how they spontaneously meet and reading how Zach slowly regains his confidence thanks to reader's kindness. Zach's shower I will never forget.
𝐇𝐮𝐫𝐭/𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭
Funny Girl by @radiowallet (dieter bravo)
The first fic I read of yours and it was love at first sight. The ending is still with me and the storytelling is something I take inspiration from when writing my own work. Loved the details, the enemies to lovers, the angst, the smut-- One of my faves for sure.
2. Between the Raindrops by @jazzelsaur (frankie morales)
The emotions this one makes me go through are such an amazing ride. The characterization, the way you tie everything together is true craftsmanship and I am here for it. This series brought me near to tears despite the fact that I still haven't finished it yet (which is a crime) It's one of the most amazing things I read and Ellie (and you ofc) really inspired me to write my own ofc's.
3. you're somebody else @foli-vora (marcus pike )
Thinking about the betrayal in this one still makes my chest ache not gonna lie. Absolutely brutal but yet also intriguing, love the way you've written Marcus here, it's one of those stories that makes your mind crawl back to it
4. Red Flags Masterlist by @astroboots & @thirstworldproblemss (moonknight)
This one is absolutely one of my favorite Moonknight fics, the characterization is superb, the feeling and emotion this one has got me every time. It made me laugh multiple times and also made me worry about what might happen. Stunning writing and perfect in every way
5. One Step at a Time by @foli-vora (pero tovar)
This fic has lived in my mind rent free ever since I read it. I adore your Pero here and how they slowly learn to trust one another. This one isn't completed yet but I just cant wait to read more.
Click here for part 2 !

miss anthro’s film recs: May 2021
Jurassic Park 1993: Watched this for the third time in a month today to celebrate it's release 28 years ago. Like most excellent films, it was created by a lucky intersection of talent. The remarkable premise was crafted into a brilliant script by David Koepp and author Michael Crichton; it was tight, clean, fast-paced - no plot holes and unnecessary scenes. Steven Spielberg really did a fantastic job of making a cohesive production and giving it a kind of emotional continuity. The cast is outstanding. I could write an essay about each one. Richard Attenborough brings pathos to John Hammond, the delusional tycoon. Sam Neill is perfect as Alan Grant, a jaded paleontologist who finds deeper compassion. Laura Dern gives a raw performance as the resolute and charming paleo-botanist Ellie Sattler. Jeff Goldblum stars as Ian Malcolm, chaotician and prototype "rock-star scientist." Bob Peck is wonderful as the sensible game warden Robert Muldoon. Samuel L. Jackson works his magic as sardonic chief engineer Ray Arnold. And of course, excellent performances from Martin Ferrero, Wayne Knight, Joseph Mazzello, and Ariana Richards. The special and physical effects are remarkable and most of them remain so nearly three decades later, including the life-sized animatronic Tyrannosaurus rex and just the right amount of CGI. Cinematography by Dean Cundey features god-tier-level use of scale framing. Not to mention great use of color, blocking, sound, costume, John Williams' beautiful score - you name it, this film really has everything going for it. Is this a perfect film? No, but it gets bloody close. Unmissable science-fiction that examines the horror unleashed by the arrogance of mankind.
The Birdcage 1996: This 25* year old film is a real gem. While the modern viewer (myself included) could find fault with some stereotypes, etc., the classic comedy has aged quite well. There’s a lot of slapstick and hysterically funny and clever dialogue. Williams and Lane are outstanding. There’s a very touching scene between the two of them which is very romantic and sweet. And of course the whole cast is perfect. I’m always impressed by this film when I haven’t seen it in a while.
The Moon-Spinners 1964: You don’t need to be a Disney fan to love this incredible classic. Hayley Mills is well loved but I don’t think she’s given enough credit for being not only a brilliant child actor but also a great actor as she aged. Her performance is stellar. The whole movie is fun and tense, bringing Mary Stewart’s novel to life in the great and beautiful country of Greece. It’s a fun adventure from start to finish with humor and romance.
Fairytale: A True Story 1997: Want to cry your eyes out about the Cottingley fairy hoax of 1917? You may not trust me but I recommend this experience. Honestly, this movie is life-changing. This is a depiction of a real life story involving historical figures. Usually no one gets that quite right but this movie kinda does. Peter O’Toole looks nothing like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but Harvey Keitel looks remarkably like Harry Houdini. Something about the music and what they do with this story gets into your bloodstream. I couldn’t possibly spoil for anyone who knows nothing about it, but I can say that there is some incredible CGI and a scene where someone faces retribution from an unexpected and shocking source.
edit 2023:

I found this in my drafts. Clearly, life got in the way and I didn’t continue my recommendation posts (I have the templates drafted in text form.) Also, while drafting this edit I was attacked by a small beetle. I remain unharmed and have released the beetle into its natural environment.

To the Castle - Chapter 2, Lord Buchanan
Summary: Lord Buchanan and Ileana leave the mountain hut, arriving at Archer Barton’s farm. The archer’s wife provides some suitable clothing for Ileana. An impulsive kiss leads her to make a decision.
Length: 5.3K
Characters: Lord Buchanan, Ileana, Archer Barton and his wife, Laura, King Steven, Queen Peg, the Sorceress.
Warnings: Minors DNI. For mature readers (18+) only due to sexual content, sexual talk, sexual assault, violence causing death.
Author’s notes: Photo edit of Lord Buchanan (Bucky Barnes) in banner by Instagram artist nixakimbo. A reminder that this is a medieval world where justice is dealt with summarily so the violence will always be simmering until justice is dispensed. I have read a lot of different genres, right from the moment I could read. Somehow, every lusty, romantic, gothic, medieval, tortured soul, or handsome male lover in everything I have ever read has been written into the character of Lord Buchanan. It was fun to make him this swoon-worthy so enjoy the ride. 😉 Incantation uttered by the Sorceress: No baby, Ileana. Forget what we told you. Love him. (Latin - Google Translate).
<<Chapter 1
🍎🗡️ 🏰
The sound of Magnus, snorting outside the hut's door roused Lord Buchanan from his sleep.  For a brief moment he wondered who the woman was curled up under his arm then he remembered, Ileana was her name.  Her hand was inside his shirt, laid softly over his heart and her head was resting on his shoulder.  Gently he touched her cheek and she murmured, pulling herself closer.  Her one leg was intertwined with his and he took in a deep breath at how satisfying it felt to have a woman in his arms again, especially one that looked like Elena.  Magnus snorted again and this time Buchanan knew he had to get out there and see to his old friend.  Gently he extracted himself from the woman, used the privy and put his jacket on.  Grabbing the bridle and a large handful of horse feed from the saddle bag he went to see the great horse.  They greeted each other by the pressing of their heads together.  He held his handful of grain under the horse's mouth then attached the bridle.
"I can't saddle you yet as Lady Ileana is sleeping on your saddle blanket," he explained.  "She is so much like Elena, Magnus.  Remember when she would ride with us, then give you apples from the pockets of her riding gear?  Stay and guard her while I look for some apples for us to eat."
He patted the great horse then went exploring.  After about ten minutes he found what he was looking for.  Taking off his jacket he loaded it with apples and returned to the hut, stopping to give Magnus several of the treats.  The great black horse gratefully took them from his master and crunched through them with what looked like joy.  Buchanan opened the door to the cabin and found Ileana topless, cleaning herself at the pump.
"My apologies, Lady Ileana," he said quickly and closed the door.
He was sorry he had walked in on her while she performed her ministrations but he wasn't sorry he had seen what he had seen.  She was beautiful, her breasts were of perfect size and shape.  Her skin was creamy coloured and he was sure it was as soft as silk.  He could feel himself becoming aroused and he placed the jacket with the apples on the bench beside the door and looked for a place far enough away and private enough to pleasure himself so that he could function again.  He found it on a rocky outlook just a few hundred yards away.  He could see the door and would know if she came outside looking for him.  Unbuttoning his trousers he placed his hand on his enlarged cock and stroked it, remembering the beautiful breasts he had just seen.  He became rock hard and started moving his hand harder over it as he thought of his mouth on those breasts and his hands on her skin.   He came quickly and emptied his seed onto the rock below him.  He would tell the priest of the waste of his seed at his next confession but he wasn't sorry he did it.  Breathing heavily he shook off what he could, then pissed to get the remainder out of his system.  He used some leaves to wipe up any spills on his boots, then he did up his buttons again and calmed himself before walking back down to the door.  Taking his place on the bench he took one of the riper apples and bit into it, expecting it to be tart and sour.  Surprisingly it was sweet and juicy and the drips came down his chin onto his chest.  Inside the jacket was the lace strip of her skirt she had given him the night before and he used it to wipe the drips of apple juice from his face and chest.  Pressing the cloth to his face he was surprised to smell the scent of her perfume on it.  He wouldn't use it in the privy.  Instead he would keep it safe as a talisman.
The door opened and she stood in the doorway, her face coloured.  He started to apologize again but she just put her hand up and shook her head.
"We were both in the wrong," she said.  "Let's just leave it at that and pretend it didn't happen."
He bowed to her and offered her one of the riper apples.  She bit into it and like him was surprised at the sweetness and juiciness of it.  The juice dripped onto her chin and onto the strip of skin visible through his night shirt.  Pulling out the lace strip he dabbed at her chin but handed her the cloth to get at the drips on her chest.  She gave the cloth back to him after and finished her apple without further problem.  Bringing his saddle bags out he filled them with the remaining apples.  Then he entered the hut bringing out the saddle blanket and saddle.  He saddled Magnus, attaching the saddle bags then went inside the hut to pull the fire apart.  He brought the remaining larger logs out by holding them gingerly by the unburnt ends and placed them in the dirt, kicking more dirt on them.  Once he was satisfied the fire was out he closed the door, then helped Ileana onto Magnus and mounted the horse behind her.
"It's a couple of hours ride to the Archer's farm," he said.  "His wife may have something you can wear.  She makes fine linens and clothing for the castle.  Their oldest son can go to the castle and request a carriage for you.  My only concern is if the Baron is resident at the castle."
"Who is the Baron?" asked Ileana.
"A man I do not trust," replied Buchanan.  "He has been useful to the King but he has a hidden agenda, I am sure of it.  I wouldn't be surprised if he is plotting with someone.  He would also be very interested in you and would not honour any promise regarding your chastity."
They rode for some time and the rocky path descended to farm land.  Eventually they came to a small but well tended farm.  A man in the field shaded his eyes to look closer at them then waved in recognition.  Buchanan waved back.
"The Archer Barton served with me and the King during the Mad Titan's final battle," he explained.  "He was as loyal a man as I was.  He is a farmer now but he pays no rent to me or to the King, just his yearly tax.  He is a free man and his destiny is in his own hands.  With a wife, daughter and two sons supported by the sweat of his own labours he has done well.  They will feed us well and I will sit at his table anytime."
They arrived in the yard surrounding his hut which was quite large and Buchanan slid off Magnus' back.  The two men smiled at their greeting, grasping each other by the arms and clapping each other on the back.
"M'lord, we expected you late last evening," he said, noticing Ileana sitting on the horse.  "What delayed you?"
"The Lady Ileana was attacked in Greenwood Forest," said Buchanan.  "Two ruffians tried to have their way with her.  I heard her cries.  They were banished by me but on second thought I really should have run them through.  We stayed in the mountain hut last night."
"You must be chilled and hungry," said the Archer.  "My good wife can attend to the Lady and provide you both with food.  Is that your nightshirt she is wearing?"
"Yes, the villains tore her blouse and undergarments and rendered them unwearable," he replied.  "Perhaps, if your wife has something she was making for the castle I can purchase it instead?  I missed my nightshirt last night.
"I'm sure she has something," said the Archer.
"Tell me, is the Baron at the castle?" asked Buchanan.
"The Knight Commander came through yesterday on the way to his aerie," the Archer replied.  "The Baron is at the castle doing his usual business."
"Lady Ileana," said Buchanan.  "You heard him.  I would rather you accompany me than send you to that villain.  What say you."
"I will continue with you M'Lord," she said.  "You have treated me with honour so far and I trust that more than anything."
Archer's face brightened.  "M'Lady, you're from one of the modern worlds," he stated.  "Your manner is different than a woman of our world.  I must say you seem to have adjusted well to your predicament."
"What else can I do?" she asked as Buchanan helped her dismount.  "Until I wake up in my world I am stuck here."
"Lord Buchanan will protect you," he said.  "There is no one more honourable, except perhaps the King."
The Archer led them into his hut and called to his wife, a pleasant woman with bright eyes and a quick, if shy smile.
"Laura, the Lady Ileana requires clothing to continue her journey with Lord Buchanan," he explained.  "Do you have anything available?"
"I just sent them to the castle this morning," she said.  "But I may have something in our daughter's garments for her wedding.  They look to be of similar size."
"I couldn't take your daughter's wedding clothes," Ileana protested.  "That wouldn't be right."
"There is still plenty of time to remake them," Laura insisted.  "Perhaps if Lord Buchanan can give me a silver piece I can buy the cloth this week."
"Laura Barton, I will give you a gold piece," he said smiling.  "Your needlework is well known.  See how well the night shirt has held up and I have worn it every night for months."
Ileana looked at the night shirt.  It was a well made piece of clothing and was more comfortable than she had expected it to be.  Laura looked at Buchanan, nodded and drew Ileana into her daughter's room.  After the nightshirt was off Laura pulled out an embroidered tape and laid it across Ileana's shoulders.  Then she measured the arms and committed the measurement to memory.  She wrapped the tape around Ileana's waist and under her bust.  Smiling at her she pulled open a box from under the bed and opened it.  Inside were beautifully embroidered tunics and corsets.
"You are a little bigger than my daughter but I made some things to be larger for her first confinement," she said.  "This corset should fit you.  Since you are travelling I would suggest you stick to a woollen tunic over a cotton chemise, which is more suitable as a nightshirt for a woman.  Your skirt has fine lace but I'm not sure it will hold up to the journey.  Would you consider trading it for a sturdier one better suited for riding a horse?"
Laura Barton pulled out the clothing she had recommended and Ileana found herself liking them.  She pulled her skirt off and Laura noticed her thong panties.  She started laughing.
"What are those?" she asked.
"They're called thongs," Ileana replied.  "A ladies undergarment designed to entice a man to the shape of her bottom."
"Oh my," she said.  "Those are something.  We usually don't wear anything, seeing as how it gets in the way of using the privy, or where no privy is available.  The modern world must be a wondrous thing if a woman can wear those in public."
Ileana tried the garments on and both women were satisfied with the fit and the look.  Before they returned Laura hesitantly touched Ileana's hand.
"Pardon my impudence but has Lord Buchanan bedded you?" she asked bluntly.  "You are the image of his late wife and I suspect he already has feelings for you.  I have one of these you can have to place over his cock if he wishes to bed you.  It will prevent a baby.  You must rinse it well after and let it dry."
"We shared a bed last night but he didn't touch me," said Ileana, touched that the woman felt she needed to know about birth control.  "He has pledged to honour my chastity but I am developing feelings for him.  I don't know if I still want him to honour the pledge."
"Take it then," she said.  "He is a good man and I'm sure if he does ask you he will please you.  Better to be safe than sorry."
She took the package and placed it inside her skirt pocket.  When Ileana stepped out in her new garments Buchanan turned her around and nodded his approval.  He pulled a small bag out of his jacket pocket and counted out two gold pieces into Laura Barton's hand.
"M'lord, we agreed to one," she said.  "Plus Lady Ileana traded her lace skirt to me for the riding skirt.  I will make good money turning that skirt into something else."
"The second gold piece is for being the best at what you do," he said. "Make yourself something beautiful to wear my good lady.  To your husband you are a fine lady and I agree.  Now, if I could impose upon you for a meal and a feed for Magnus we will trespass on your hospitality a little while longer."
They sat at the table while the Archer fed Magnus.  Laura rustled about the kitchen and fixed up great slices of bread, cheese and bacon.  Ileana could see they did have a well stocked kitchen and understood why Buchanan had given the extra gold piece.  They were both hard working people but they knew their worth and lived well.  The Bartons sat and ate with them and filled Buchanan in on the local gossip.  After an hour Buchanan stood up and said they must leave.  He helped Ileana up onto Magnus and mounted behind her.  They pulled away with a wave to the couple and rode along the edge of the farm and onto a path leading into a forest.
"We are going to see the Knight Commander, Sir Samuel," said Buchanan.  "Another good friend from the wars.  He is also a falconer, has an otherworldly bond with his falcons and hawks."
They rode for several hours before stopping for a meal of more bread and cheese given them by the Bartons followed by another of those juicy apples.  Buchanan watched her as she ate.
"You are more comfortable in these clothes," he stated.  "Your manner is more relaxed and you ride better.  I am also glad to have my nightshirt back.  I missed it last night."
"It was very warm," replied Ileana.  "Warmer than I thought a silk garment would be."
"I bought the fabric myself on a trip to the Holy Land after the war but before I married," he said.  "For a time I expected to join a monastery and went there to offer myself as a warrior monk."
"What happened?" she asked.
"It's too damn hot there," he laughed.  "I never felt cool, even when I swam in the Dead Sea.  I wondered why I should be celibate and live in an earthly hell when I could live a life of drinking, whoring and killing and not be in hell until my death.  Not that I'm much of a drinker, or a killer and I'm still celibate."
They both laughed and Ileana found herself enjoying his company.  As they rode again he told her about the land and it's history.  It was going well until they heard a woman's scream.  Spurring Magnus on they came upon two men attempting to rape a young woman, not much older than a child.  Jumping off the horse Buchanan pulled his sword out and pulled the men off of her.  To his disgust and Ileana's dismay they were the same two who had accosted her.  Without comment he ran them both through with his sword several times until they were dead.
"Did they hurt you?" he asked gently of the girl.
She nodded, tears beginning to drop from her eyes.
"I'm sorry I was too late to prevent that," he said to her, opening his change purse and giving her a gold coin.  "This is small recompense for the crime you have suffered.  Whatever they have on their person is yours.  Take this knife and have your revenge on their bodies.  I would start with cutting their meagre cocks off and stuffing them in their mouths as a warning to rapists."
He pulled the knife out of his boot and presented it to her.  Her tears stopped and she stood up with a look of determination on her face.  They left her there as she began to stab the dead bodies.  Ileana was troubled by it and it must have shown on her face.
"I warned them if I saw their faces in my lands again I would execute them summarily," he said.  "I kept my word.  They deserved a far worse way to die but that girl will feel that justice was done."
"She needs counselling," said Ileana, "and to see a doctor in case they infected her with a disease."
"It's not your world," he said flatly.  "It's mine and it's centuries behind yours in how raped women are treated.  I know that.  We don't have the medicines to treat the disease that is already coursing through her system.  She will likely be dead in a few years from it.  I've given her the only justice she can possibly get – the death of the men who violated her and the opportunity for revenge against their bodies.  Don't lecture me on the short comings of my time and my world.  I already know it.  I knew it the day my wife died in childbirth that if she lived in your world she would have lived and my son, too."
He was angry and breathing heavily and swore under his breath as he jumped off of Magnus.  He kept leading the horse but he obviously didn't want to talk any more about it.  Ileana felt bad about how she had handled it.  Of course their worlds were different and he handled it in a way that the girl would appreciate and understand.  She sighed as she rode on the horse alone.
"Stop," she said.  "I want to get off."
"No," he replied.  "I don't want you off."
She put one leg over and tried to slide off but it was a lot higher from the ground than she expected and she hung there hanging on to the saddle.  Magnus snorted and Buchanan turned around.  He walked back and stared at her in frustration.
"What part of no don't you understand," he yelled as he helped her off.  "You are so stubborn and superior in your attitude.  Could you not just honour my need for solitude?  My world isn't perfect but ...."
She threw her arms around his neck and kissed him.  He lifted her completely up and kissed her back, his arms holding her close to his body.  Slowly he lowered her to the ground, looking at her as he did so.
"Why did you do that?" he asked, confused.  "I was so angry at you and you kissed me."
"I wanted to," she said.  "You were right.  I had no right to criticize how you handled those men.  You are the law here, judge, jury and executioner.  You gave them a second chance to do better and they wasted it.  It's what you wanted to do when they tried it on me but you spared my feelings then.  I'm sorry I interfered."
"But the kiss...."
"Was wonderful," she replied.  "I've thought about doing it since you kissed me."
She looked down, embarrassed now.  He looked down at her and placed his hand under her chin raising her face to his as he lowered it to kiss her gently on the lips.  Drawing her in closer to him he kissed her sweetly, gently touching his tongue to hers.
"Ileana," he whispered.  "I pledged to honour your chastity..."
"I'm releasing you from that pledge," she whispered back.  "I want to be with you."
He held her close stroking her chestnut hair.  "I would not say no to you but if we are to be together then I want to do it right.  Not in a rough hut but a real bed, with clean sheets.  It means we have to go to the castle.  It's important that you stay with me while we are there.  The King is honourable but if the Baron is his guest he will try to bed you first.  It is his nature and he does not respect boundaries.  His presence is tolerated because he knows secrets.  Promise me you will not leave my side."
"I promise," she stated, relieved that they had come to a decision.
They walked back to Magnus and helped her up then mounted behind her.  He turned around and they backtracked to a path that led away from where they were originally heading.  It wasn't long before she could see the castle between the trees.  It was magnificent, the sandstone blocks glowed in the sun and there were several tall towers that reached to the sky.  They approached the moat and were challenged by a sentry of short stature.
"Halt!" said the sentry.  "Identify yourself."
"Lord Buchanan and the Lady Ileana," said Buchanan.
The sentry looked up and smiled.  "M'lord, it has been a long time since you were at the castle," he replied.  "Enter."
"Thank you Peter," said Buchanan, as they rode past him.  "Peter is the son of the widow of one of my tenant farmers.  He wanted a life as a soldier and I recommended him to the Knight Commander as one with potential."
He rode into the busy courtyard.  A squire came forward to take Magnus and approached too quickly.  The great horse reared up and Ileana held tight to his mane until Buchanan was able to get him to return to a standing position.  Jumping off he then helped Ileana come down.  He handed the reins to the squire then took his saddlebags and handed them off to a servant after removing a couple of apples.
"Give him these and he will be your friend," he advised the first man as he handed him the fruit.
Offering Ileana his arm he escorted her into the castle.  "Go with what I tell them," he advised.  "What do you modern women call it?  Back me up."
She nodded taking in everything.  It was bustling with activity with guards and servants everywhere.  Several people greeted Buchanan by name so he was obviously well known.  They came to the throne room and he presented himself to a servant who announced them to the room.
"My Lord Buchanan and his companion, Lady Ileana," he announced and bowed.
The couple walked in and at the far end of the room on a throne she could see a blond haired, bearded man wearing a crown.  As they walked closer the man rose from his throne and approached them.  His face broke into a smile when he came close to Buchanan.
"Buck," he said enthusiastically.  "We haven't seen you here in so long.  To what do we owe the pleasure?"
"A place for my lady Ileana and I to sleep, your Majesty," he said bowing, as Ileana curtsied.
"Ileana?" said the King.  "She looks like your Elena.  My dear lady, are you from a future world?
"I am, your Majesty," she said.
"That's outstanding, Buck," he said, genuinely happy.  "Are you and Lady Ileana betrothed?"
Ileana gripped Buchanan's arm tightly, feeling slightly betrayed by his request to back him up.
"We are still negotiating the dowry," he replied.  "Once that is done we will read the banns."
"I am so happy for you," he said, hugging his friend, then turning to Ileana.  "You will be very happy with Buck.  He is a most attentive husband."
"Thank you your Majesty," said Ileana.
"We had a small accident," said Buchanan, "and we lost Ileana's clothing.  All she has are her travelling clothes.  I assume I still have my formal clothes in my quarters?"
"Yes, of course," replied the King.  "I'm sure Peg has something that we can give to the Lady Ileana.  Peg, come meet Buck's betrothed, sorry, almost betrothed."
A beautiful dark haired woman descended the steps from the throne and approached them.
"Buck," she said affectionately.  "You have made the King so happy with your visit today.  You will stay for the feast, you and your lady?"
"Yes, your Majesty," he replied.
"Buck was just saying they ran into some trouble and lost the Lady Ileana's clothing," he said.  "Surely there is something in that closet of yours she can wear?  Or better yet the Sorceress can conjure some new clothing."
"Why don't I escort her to the Sorceress and see what she can make," said the Queen.
She offered her arm to Ileana and led her away, to Buchanan's distress.  When they were out of earshot the Queen leaned into her.
"Don't worry, your secret is safe with me," she said.  "I know you're not betrothed.  Your body language betrays you.  I'm from a modern world and I was a spy.  But Buck is obviously in love with you and you do have feelings for him.  I'm guessing he wants to sleep with you?"
Ileana nodded and told her how they met.  They walked to the receiving room of the Sorceress.  The Queen knocked on the door and a sing song voice bid them enter.  A beautiful red headed woman in a long red dress rose from a chair.
"Peg, you've brought me another modern woman," she said.  "Buck is in love with you, Lady Ileana, but you aren't the one who will stay.  You will break his heart."
"I don't know what you mean," Ileana stammered.  "I think I'm in love with him."
"They all are," said the Sorceress, "but then they are called back to their worlds and they leave him.  I have to go and remove the memories from everyone's mind.  You aren't the first but you are the next to last.  The next one will be the one who can stay."
"Then why am I here?" asked Ileana.  "Why put me through this?"
"Because the Buck that you will love is back in your world but you won't realize he's the one until you have been with this Buck.  It's a cruel trick by Fate, Karma, Chance, Luck, whatever you want to call it.  Right now, in your world you are unconscious on a sidewalk and Bucky is waiting for the ambulance to come, blaming himself for arriving too late to stop the black and green hooded man.  He's already in love with you having seen a picture of you, Haydn and Sam at a party.  It's why he asked Sam to set up the blind date."
"Can't you send me back now?" asked Ileana.
The Sorceress laughed.  "No, that is not up to me," she said.  "When you are ready you will go back with vague memories of a man with blue eyes who came to your rescue but you will think it is Bucky and it is because he is the same in almost all worlds.  A man who faced tragedy in his life but still retained his decency and honour.  In the meantime you will be with our Buck and you will sleep with him.  Don't worry about that condom.  It was a thoughtful gift but they most uncomfortable and ineffective.  I will put a spell on you so you don't conceive.  You will have your passionate love affair with Lord Buchanan and then you will go back to your true love, Bucky Barnes."
Ileana was dumbstruck.  She had just given herself permission to fall in love with the man but was being told it wouldn't count.  That her future lay with another version of Buchanan.  The prospect of being with this one for a short time was still possible and she decided she still wanted him.
"Good girl," said the Sorceress, reading her mind.  "Enjoy him.  He is a skillful lover.  His Elena was a modern woman and she taught him much about pleasing a woman.  It's why he had no mistresses.  She gave herself to him fully and completely."
"How did she die?" asked Ileana.
"She didn't," said the Sorceress.  "He woke up one morning and she was gone.  She had been returned to her world during the night, no chance to prepare or say goodbye.  He was frantic, certain she had been kidnapped, and wouldn't accept she had returned.  We created the memory of her death and the death of their child so he would have closure, a painful closure but it was our only option.  When she returned to her world her pregnancy no longer existed either.  I had to do some memory reconstruction on her as well.  Now, I cast the spell so there is no pregnancy."
"Why doesn't James like the Baron?" Ileana asked.  "He told me to stay away from him."
"There is a reason but it is Buck's to tell.  The Baron knows about Buck and how we protect him," said Peg.  "He keeps threatening to tell him how we have deceived him.  We have deceived him but it's because we care about him.  Don't worry about the Baron.  We know how to keep him silent.  Buck is perceptive and senses our disdain of the man."
The Sorceress created three gowns for Ileana, a blue one, a green one, and a red one.  They were sent up to Buchanan's rooms that were always kept for him as a treasured friend of the King.  The three women stood and faced each other.  The Sorceress held out her hands and they joined together in a triad.
"Go, have a wonderful affair with Buck," said the Sorceress.  "You will be here for at least a week of our time.  Don't be afraid to love him fully and completely.  He is worth it and so are you."
"We will take care of the Baron," said Peg.  "He's so obvious sometimes.  Stay with Buck because you want to not because you have to."
"Will I remember this talk with you or does my memory reconstruction start now?" asked Ileana.
"You modern girls are clever and so sceptical," laughed the Sorceress.  "Non infantem, Ileana.   Oblivisceris quod prædiximus vobis.  Ama eum."
"Thank you for the dresses, Sorceress," said Ileana.  "I can't wait to show Lord Buchanan."
"Certainly, Lady Ileana," bowed the Sorceress.  "Enjoy your stay in the castle.  I hope it is magical for you.  Your Majesty."
The Sorceress bowed to Queen Peg.  She returned the bow with a smile.
"Sorceress," she said.
She escorted Ileana back to the throne room and they entered arm in arm as if they were great friends which, in many ways they were.  Peg, a modern woman herself had made the decision to stay because of her love for the King and his love for her.  The Sorceress had confirmed that she was the one for him and helped her transition to become a woman of that time.  As other modern women entered their time she was notified by the Sorceress and either sought the women out or waited for them to appear at the castle.  Only a few ended up staying.  Most returned back to their worlds with a story of a most remarkable dream they experienced as that is how the Sorceress reconstructed their memories.  Her favourites were the ones that Buck loved.  His love was true and pure and his devotion to those women was seen as being of the highest level.  Peg always felt honoured to be witnessing those love affairs.  When the "one" who could stay finally did they would be the best of friends in the same way their husbands were.

This is a GIANT sale, probably even besting the Big One from April. Very reasonable prices: $2 for most books, $1 for CDs and teen/juvenile or mass market paperbacks, 50 cents for the really skinny ones. Some older books individually priced higher but very fairly for their condition and scarcity, and they always have a nice selection of them. This is a community fundraiser sale so they lease out space wherever they can find it, and this year it filled half a vacant warehouse. The sale also runs every day for two weeks straight, but due to its distance and various commitments I didn't get to go until day 11.
And still, there was TONS (albeit not a lot in the way of books less than 10 years old). I would actually like to have gone back, because I ended up only being able to spend 3 hours there and it was NOT enough time to thoroughly rake the place over or make sure I had made the very wisest purchases, but alas, more Commitments and a dash of weather got me. >:(
As for what I actually got -- oh shoot, I keep moving them around; I already see I missed photographing at least one -- a few of the children's books above are replacement copies of beloved titles in nicer condition than the beat-up ones I have, but most of these are new to me and I'm very excited. The level of general interest increases as you get farther, I promise.
Tumblr media
======
1. Happily After All - Laura C. Stevens: replacement copy. I didn't read this until adulthood, but it's from my era and I LOVED it and I know I would have loved it had I come across it as a kid, too.
2. Babysitters Club Super Special #2: Summer Vacation: look i wasn't GOING to collect these but this one looks practically brand new so maybe I can have one more rep as a treat (maybe even relinquish that other one in Bad Shape from the last sale)
3. Animal inn #7: The Pet Makeover - Virginia Vail: this series I AM collecting and I am THRILLED to have one that is both in great condition and that I'm not sure I've read.
4. A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens: I told you I was going to replace my ugly copy someday, and the bonded-leather-with-gilt-edges Barnes & Noble edition is one of the prettier ones I know about.
5. A Horse For Mandy - Lurlene McDaniel: look, it's very short & silly but it was kind of a literary bucket goal to read her very first book (originally pubbed 1981), featuring horses instead of sicklit, having already grabbed another early one, Where's The Horse For Me?
6. A Horse For X.Y.Z. - Louise Moeri: another replacement of a childhood fave. My copy isn't bad but old paperbacks are such poor quality in general that I figured I might as well own the nicest available.
7. Silver - Thomas C. Hinkle: not in great shape, but by an author whose 1920s & 30s animal stories I am always looking to read more of. I'm excited to have a Comet Books edition because they have the coolest color graphics on the back (you can see an example on Goodreads here), and honestly condition isn't bad for a pulp paperback pushing 75 years of age.
8. Mayday! ... Mayday! - Hilary Milton: a random grabbed-to-read survival adventure, two teens seeking help after the plane they're on crashes into a forested mountainside. Probable read-and-release, unless the small size tricks me into keeping it along with my 200 other mass markets.
Tumblr media
9. Touch The Moon - Marion Dane Bauer: maybe my favorite by her, a girl who longs for a horse is disappointed to only receive a china one...but at night he temporarily transforms into a real horse. Who can talk. Magical adventure time!
10. Summer of the Wolves - Polly Carlson Voiles: replacement copy of one of the all-time best middle grade novels I've ever read as an adult.
11. Lucky Lady - Susan Saunders: replacement copy of a short horse book for preteens that I nevertheless read and loved in high school. I wanted it so bad that I've literally kept a crappy paperback copy with teen marks and a torn cover from a Little Free Library...until now!
12. Cliques, Hicks & Ugly Sticks - K.D. McCrite: guess who is SO THRILLED to have found the 2nd book in this middle grade quartet (not available at local library) only two months after reading the first one and falling in utter love!
13. Almena's Dogs - Regina Woody: one of the few uncommon books in the Grosset & Dunlap "Famous Dog Stories," I've never seen it before. Probably was unpopular because I'm pretty sure it's the ONLY one that features a girl, let alone a Black one. A Goodreads friend read this recently so I was really excited to find my own copy! From 1954 originally, so it seems ahead of its time. Already read half of it and I'm so in love. I am also now interested in a bunch more Regina Woody books, having never heard of her before, but damn. They are scarce.
14. All Dogs Go to Heaven - Beth Brown: I was literally two steps away from joining the checkout line when I spotted a box of old books under a table I hadn't looked at before. This was the third one down. Since I was out of time, I just SEIZED without even enough time to open the cover and make sure it was actually dog stories -- but it definitely is and I could not be more thrilled.
(P.S. This is illustrated by a Mr. Carl Cobbledick. They simply do not make names like that anymore.)
Tumblr media
15-16. A Separate Peace + Peace Breaks Out - John Knowles: the exact editions I've checked out of the library, too, lol (though I hate the latter because the back cover is just a giant jump-scare of the author's face. i pray this horrid 80s trend never returns). I think I mentioned before that I was idly thinking of reading them this year; I ended up not doing so but Mom did, so might try again this fall.
17. The Stillmeadow Road - Gladys Taber: the very first book I ever read from her, which would eventually kick off a deep appreciation for her work! one of several books featuring musings & anecdotes on a quiet life as a writer in the countryside, residing in a late 17th century (American) farmhouse, with plenty of pets.
18.Ranch of Dreams - Cleveland Amory: I've been idly meaning to read this one for a while. Don't know if I'll keep it 'cause it's a BIG hardcover, but his Cat Who Came For Christmas trilogy was one of the first pet memoirs I read waaay back in the day, and he just did incredible things with his money (i.e. set up an animal sanctuary. this book was published in 1997, a year before he passed, but the sanctuary still exists!).
19. If Wishes Were Horses: The Education of a Veterinarian - Loretta Gage, D.V.M., w/ [her sister the writer] Nancy Gage: vet memoirs were also some of the earliest adult nonfiction I read, starting in middle school -- I literally read every single one the library had. I don't read them nearly as much anymore, but I'm still interested, especially older ones like this (released 1993) by women when they were still fighting to be taken seriously in the profession, especially in large animal practice. We're talking 1970s and even 80s here.
20. Wild Voice of the North: The Chronicle of an Eskimo Dog - Sally Carrighar: this book is in rouuuuuugh shape, but I simply could not resist him face.
And for the final wrap-up of random books... (also featuring: the one I forgot)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
21. Martha's Vineyard: Isle if Dreams - Susan Branch: I FINALLY FOUND THE FINAL BOOK IN THE MEMOIR TRILOGY!!!!!! Actually found them all in a 7-month period, come to think of it, which is wild because I have been keeping an eye out for 8 years (I do actually still need a replacement copy of the last one w/ a dust jacket, but at least I could read it if I wanted to). Reminders of how pretty they are inside, the closest you will ever get to finding a real journal:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
moving on...
22. Inside Dunder Mifflin: I don't love the illustration style but I do love that it was published after the series ended, so it is able to address everything up to and including the finale. It's just such a fun novelty item I don't even really know how to describe it yet, may not keep forever, but sure fun to have now!
23. How Far You've Come - Morgan Harper Nichols: I gather she's some sort of influencer; have not heard of her or this book but I am a SUCKER for a smaller-than-average hardcover-with-no-dust-jacket gift book full of text interspersed with pretty drawings and poems.
24. [CD] Skye Dyer - Letting Go (2014): Dunno who she is, picked solely on the basis of "young and pretty white woman on cover = good enough odds I'll like it to gamble $1". I've only played through it once, but this time my instincts appear to be on point.
And the silliest find of all...
25. Dawson's Creek: The Official Postcard Book: mostly because it's in like-new condition and I simply know, I KNOW, that this kind of nostalgic novelty item cannot easily be had for $1 anywhere else.
I still haven't even ever seen an episode of the show. This would be a greater find if I could sell things online, TBH, because the true value is I'm pretty sure I could flip this for at least $10; the binding is so tight that I can't really see all the postcards well without dismantling it, and if I do that I kill some of the value, which I'm not ready to do.
Nevertheless I'm having fun looking at what I can see of all the senior-portrait-style photos; Katie Holmes in particular is simply stunning.
=====
And there we go! Biggest bummer was that despite this sale being a RESPLENDENT repository of 70s-90s teen & children's paperbacks, not a single Lynn Hall book to be found. Where did all of her books GO, goddamn. Also kind of surprised not to see any Marguerite Henry, not even the heavily reprinted paperbacks (most of which are still in print).
But the Susan Branch book -- which I forgot to actually look for, and just happened to spot by chance on my way out of the biggest room for the last time -- and the vintage animal books were definitely worth the trip.

'Live free and die?' The sad state of U.S. life expectancy” (NPR) SUMMARY: “Just before Christmas, federal health officials confirmed life expectancy in America had dropped for a nearly unprecedented second year in a row – down to 76 years. While countries all over the world saw life expectancy rebound during the second year of the pandemic after the arrival of vaccines, the U.S. did not. “Then, last week, more bad news: Maternal mortality in the U.S. reached a high in 2021. Also, a paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association found rising mortality rates among U.S. children and adolescents. “‘This is the first time in my career that I've ever seen [an increase in pediatric mortality] – it's always been declining in the United States for as long as I can remember,’ says the JAMA paper's lead author Steven Woolf, director emeritus of the Center on Society and Health at Virginia Commonwealth University. ‘Now, it's increasing at a magnitude that has not occurred at least for half a century.’ “…’American children are less likely to live to age 5 than children in other high-income countries,’ the authors write on the second page. It goes on: ‘Even Americans with healthy behaviors, for example, those who are not obese or do not smoke, appear to have higher disease rates than their peers in other countries.’”

The letter condemns the Supernova Music Festival attack on Oct 7, but fails to mention Palestinian civilians, then states:
"As Israel takes the necessary steps to defend its citizens in the coming days and weeks, social media will be overrun by an orchestrated misinformation campaign spearheaded by Iran."

TBR Bingo Finnish!
Tumblr media
It took more than the summer just because I was waiting on some holds, but here I stand, ready to enter the Month of Reading with a new Bingo card! If you want the full list of what I read, that is below the cut. I highly recommend just about every book on it.
My favorite new author surprised me.
Stephen Graham Jones is a Native Author and the book The Only Good Indians is a Native horror story. Now, I don't read horror, which is why this being my favorite surprised me. In fact, this was my first ever horror novel so I can't say how it compares to anyone else popular in the field. I can say that being a Native story it very much has that this is the horror WE would experience feel to it. By this I mean I doubt an author of any other background could capture this story as well. There was an emotional element to it that I can't really put a finger on. Just so well written. I'm going to read his other books when I can get my hands on them.

top 5 books of all time?
do you ever mark/dog ear books you own?
most disliked popular books?
what are things you look for in a book?
Top 5 (in no particular order)
The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden (for real if you only ever take one recommendation from me, let it be this one)
Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte
LOTR - J.R.R. Tolkien
The Heroin Diaries - Nikki Sixx (this one helped me through a lot as a teen - albeit not heroin addiction - so it's here because of that, not because it's a literary masterpiece, but it's still very good)
The War of Art - Steven Pressfield (another one that isn't a literary masterpiece, but I buy it for every creative I know because it's That Good for helping overcome procrastination/creative dread)
Honourable mention for The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, bc her ability to convey atmosphere and leave you feeling fucked up by the end is unreal.
Marking/dog-earing
I was super against it as a teen but I've gotten over that weird thing of "all of my books must be pristine and appear untouched!!!" unless it's a really pretty, special edition. I still can't bring myself to dog-ear pages or write on them, though - but I do use post-its etc to mark certain things. But these days I mostly read on Kindle bc I just do not have room for more books, so I use the highlight function on that a lot.
Disliked books
I abandoned the You series by Caroline Kepnes halfway through book two this year. The first book was good, although uncomfortable reading, the second book was just...not good at all. It sort of hit the bad combination of resurrecting some things I'd rather forget, as well as just being nowhere near as good as the first. I'm also a Twilight hater through and through even if I can appreciate the meme potential now.
The one I really, really can't deal with is modernist literature in general. I had to take a class for it in uni, and a few books crept in here and there in other modules too, and I just have no time for it. I can appreciate what it did for literature in general as a movement while just despising the individual books. Reading it makes me feel so bored I get nauseous. Just not for me. It did produce a very spirited rant mid-class about my own personal beef with Virginia Woolf when one of my teachers asked me why I didn't like the content, though, which is a fond memory. Hatred for modernism cured my social anxiety for ten minutes what a time to be alive.
Things I look for in a book -
I've been trying to cast a wider net with what I read lately, taking on different reading challenges just to round it all out. I lean towards historical non-fiction, fantasy, and biographies, but I'll honestly read anything (well, except modernism apparently) as long as it's done well. Like if the author is passionate about what they're writing, and that love and passion shines through. It's not so easy to pin down in a specific book (although Katherine Arden does it amazingly in the Winternight trilogy, combining her love for Russian folklore and history with an unparalleled writing ability in general), but it's very obvious when it's not there, and you can tell the author doesn't respect their story as a thing in and of itself, and is just using the story as a lifeless tool to be a patronising shit about x, y, and z.
I've noticed in writing circles that the people who do this are the ones who get very upset when other writers talk about their story/characters having a mind of their own etc.
But overarchingly, I love stories of resilience. Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, a biography of Louis Zamperini, was phenomenal that way, but I'll probably never read it again because it was just so grim and such a difficult read. I just realised that's actually an overarching theme of all five books I recommended at the start of this dissertation. Can't Hurt Me by David Goggins is also my fuckin bible in that regard, because resilience is his whole existence.
Thank you!! 💜
