does anyone ever get the impression that authors skipped the day in first grade where we all learned the said was the most boring word in the English language and to NEVER use it?
cause I do, all the time.
#brandon mull#fhdw#this dude had the words “Seth said” as a dialogue tag three times on the same page#Two of them were only a paragraph apart#Seth Sorenson#rick riordan#pjo#hoo#it honestly disappointing#When there’s definitely better words to use#chris colfer#tlos#atom#im sure this goes for more authors#these are just the ones I remember the best#But like I would be caught sea before using said in my writing#Also when they use the same dialogue tags repeatedly…#My pet peeves everyone

(SPOILERS FOR THE LAND OF STORIES) okay so sorta outing myself as a Land Of Stories fan, but who cares the it’s a great book series. So we all know the potion that can make any work of fiction real, and this potion worked on greek mythology. Greek mythology isn’t collectively seen as fiction though, majority does, but accent Greeks, and some people nowadays, see it as real. This is the same as the bible. Not everyone sees it at nonfiction, some see it as completely fiction. Would the potion work on the bible???? Could have the masked man got fucking God on his side???

Anon it’s been fifteen fucking years and I know you didn’t mean it like that but seeing that ship name sent a chill down my spine//
LMAO no, i'm sorry i didn't mean it like that, i wasnt their shipper, tho ngl i read cc rpf once or twice.. i mean..i was literally a kid 😭😭 and indeed it was a lot! and their shipper also a lot and so annoying. i know they both terrified to be seen together. I remember everytime they have event together instantly new rpfs appeared 😭
BUT NOW THEY'RE FREE!! Even chris wrote that goofy caption, they now able to make fun of all that!
My trauma with crisscolfer didn't talk for more than ten years makes me really scared with edmar. i love their friendship. i dont want the same thing happen to them because of deranged shipper, they don't know how it felt to be in the glee fandom😭😭😭😭
Honestly, I can excuse children and rpf, and ppl even reading and writing fic of it, as long as it doesn’t get to 1D levels of scary and doesn’t reach actual harassment of real ppl… but it was never for me. I was already 16 when glee came out so I was pretty old and yeah shipping real ppl felt… icky to me and still does. Especially when ppl are in committed relationships.
I may or may not have watched many glee cast videos recently (again, inexplicable downward spiral into glee)(I’m lying it’s explicable it was the USelection) and Darren Criss said in the past he thought it was funny (which… ok?) but that Chris Colfer hated it and that man is only a couple of years older than me so it always hit me like how young he was when that show was happening and the shit glee the show and glee fans put him through always makes me so upset. Ppl were so parasocial with him…
But his caption was very funny yes. I’m glad the trauma is lifting a bit and he’s joking about the show so publicly.
As far as edmar man, I get your feeling. I do think they’re adorable and I love that their friendship seems so strong. It’s so so sweet. I’m hoping it’s a different age and ppl are less insane and more respectful so the type of harassment and shit that the glee dudes got won’t happen now. But I may be too optimistic. I loved that video of Edvin showing up at the London (?) show and I only saw ppl being sweet in comments and not being insane so again tentatively holding out hope that fandom won’t ruin that lol
#about me#anonymous#honestly I think edmar is like REAL friends#so I hope they survive any crazy thrown their way#unrelated but I saw ppl refer to Chris Colfer as an author on TikTok and not you know… Kurt Hummel#and I felt OLD#I remember when he started writing those books?#I usually don’t feel old but yeah that did it

Chris Colfer Hopes New Sci-Fi Book Teaches Kids 'How Pointless and Primitive Prejudice Is'

Published on June 8, 2024 'If I can plant those seeds early on, maybe when they're adults, they'll be more compassionate towards their fellow man,' the author says.
Chris Colfer wants to teach his young readers to find the good in what's different.
His new book, Roswell Johnson Saves the World!, follows a young boy who teams up with an eccentric group of aliens to save Earth.
The Glee star, 34, is no stranger to the fantasy young adult genre with the success of his previous book series The Land of Stories, which began in 2012 and continued for six books.
He is even more acquainted with the idea of alien life which, he tells PEOPLE, has fascinated him since he was a child and saw one at the foot of his bed one evening when he was sick.

you know in booktok when people say ‘*author* basically raised me’ ?? well i have that, but its kinda weird. obviously rick riordan, cause his books were the ones that made me realize how much i loved reading. then chris colfer, cause he’s a genius and when i read them for the first time i just fell for every single character. little me who loved disney movies loved tlos just as much. then there’s james riley, and that’s the weird thing. i never read one of his books completely. i read the first 100 pages of half upon a time but i never finished it. and i started story thieves but also dropped it. and somehow, still, i feel such a connection to his books and the way he writes. i used to reread story thieves all the time, but i have never read the end. never. and i have no idea why. i just dropped it every time.

Ayo shoutout to fairytale retellings that are written for actual preteens/young teens, here are some of my favorites;
Note note: These ones specifically are all appropriate for young audiences, say a hyperlexic little girl with ADHD who had The Hunger Games given to her in 3rd grade because her teacher couldn't keep up with her thirst for pages (just a nonspecific lil example :D) so if you're a parent or teacher reading this post I hope this helps!
Land of Stories by Chris Colfer- of course. What's not to love? I mean I lost a little steam in the last book (there's six) but heyyyy the first one can be read alone and then if you want more lore you can keep going if you wanna.
East by Edith Pattou- Ok fine, our main girl is giving a little bit of not-like-other-girls (Purple eyes? really?) but it's such a fun fucking reread, I feel like some of my superstitious things are validated when I do read it. East of the Sun and West of the Moon hasn't been retold to death so this is awesome.
Twice Upon a Time; Rapunzel, the One with All the Hair by Wendy Mass- Mouthful of a title but I STILL think back to this one all the time and laugh. It's short, it's cute, it's funny, they make the prince and Rapunzel into more normal kids, this one is a great light read. The other ones in the series are probably just as good.
Oh yeah forgot to mention these other books are THICK.
Just Ella by Margaret Peterson Haddix- I've been rereading this one since I was small and I still notice new things every time I read it. I'm so mad I marked up my copy because I have a gorgeous one from before they ruined the cover with modern art. If you look it up, I have the one where it's like half peeled back to show Ella as a peasant. Also a skinny book.
Ever After High's book series, mostly written by Shannon Hale- Did y'all know EAH had books when we were younger? Hale is one of my favorite authors, I ate these UP once I got my hands on all of them. Princess Academy was one of my favorites as a kid so finding these when I was like 11-12 was GREAT. They're long enough to keep me busy and super engaging. Ya gotta know- Briar's my favorite character in the books. Closely followed by Cedar.
Hale's Rapunzel's Revenge is SUPER good too. Graphic Novel. I'm a very huge Hale fan.
I can't think of any others right now but if I do I'll reblog and tack them on!

I have a book deal with a successful big 5 imprint. However, I was looking at some other books my editor had acquired that have come out so far in 2023-24, and it seems like they haven't really made a splash. Most have only between 300-800 ratings on Goodreads. One in particular has only 100 ratings two months after release. I know it's my anxiety brain talking, but I can't help but feel like these are not very promising stats. Is it too early to worry about how my book will perform? Thank you.
Not only is it too early to worry about this now -- you shouldn't worry about this ever. There are MUCH more important things to worry about in this wide world of ours.
Perhaps it would be reassuring to hear that GoodReads "stats" are not indicators of sales. . . they are just an indicator of what is popular on GoodReads. Further, other books your editor acquired have nothing to do with YOUR book, or your future GoodReads stats, or your future sales.
MOST BOOKS DO NOT HAVE THOUSANDS OF RATINGS ON GOODREADS -- especially when they are new! I just went through YA New Releases on GoodReads -- out of 100 new-ish YA books, 13 of them had more than 800 ratings. I went through New Releases in MG -- out of 55 books, THREE of them had over 800 ratings. So, all told, about 10% of the featured 2024 releases in YA and MG had over 800 ratings.
What the vast majority of that 10% had in common: They were hotly anticipated new releases by already popular authors. One or two of the YA seemed to potentially be debuts, but they were the kind of books that seem to be most popular on GoodReads (ie, some kind of YA Romantasy that I've never even heard of).
But again -- this is not an indicator of anything except "what happens to be popular ON GOODREADS." It doesn't necessarily correlate with what's popular IN THE WORLD. Books that are included in the "under 800" club include books that are selling like wildfire:
-- The new Chris Colfer book, very popular #1 NYT Bestselling author, spent a couple weeks on the NYT list? 100 ratings, 2 months post release.
-- The new Babysitters Little Sister book that we can't keep on the bookstore shelves, hugely popular, living on the NYT list? 400 ratings three months after release.
-- A HORSE NAMED SKY by Rosanne Parry, which spent 25 weeks on the NYT Bestseller list? 300 ratings, 11 months after release.
So what?
So we have established that Number of GoodReads Reviews are not a meaningful metric. But let me be even more clear:
MOST books, especially by debut or lesser-known authors, DON'T "make a splash" right out of the gate. When those books succeed, it's because sales are steady and grow, usually over a relatively long period of time. Word-of-mouth, getting some great reviews, getting added to school curriculum or summer reading lists or state lists, etc -- these things don't happen pre-publication or even within the early months of publication, it's a long game.
So will YOUR book "make a splash" or have 800+ GoodReads reviews when it is new? Statistically? Probably not.
Again I say: So what? That doesn't make it a failure in any way. That doesn't make it any less meaningful to your readers. And, most importantly for your ask, that doesn't mean it won't or can't be successful in the long term. . . even, with luck, HUGELY successful.
But whatever level of success your future book may find, it's not going to happen overnight, and being pre-emptively worried about it isn't going to help any.
KEEP YOUR EYES ON YOUR OWN PAPER. STOP COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS. AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, GET OFF GOODREADS.

Instead of reading Harry Potter, might I instead recommend The Land of Stories series by Chris Colfer?
I have loved and looked up to Chris since I was 13 years old because of his role as Kurt Hummel on Glee, both as an actor and a writer; I still adore him to this day because he’s just such an incredible talent and someone I’ve looked up to for nearly half of my life.
Not only are The Land of Stories books really great fantasy books that get better and better with each instalment, not only is Chris a bestselling author, not only is he a Golden Globe winner for his work as an actor on Glee, not only is he a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, but he also supports trans rights!

#anyway stan Chris Colfer forever and ever ❤️#trans day of visibility#trans rights#tlos#the land of stories#glee#kurt hummel#chris colfer
