Once upon a time the top three in the tag were Adam, Nate, and Ava
The sheer amount of M-centric fics on ao3 shows that Iâm actually not in the majority of twc fans
#when i first played and read fics there was scarcely a mason or morgan fic to be found#and tbf i do love a lot of the m fics! there are so many good ones and favorite authors#but i usually go to ao3 by way of tumblr!

"Darkrooms" Binding
My latest binding! This is the author's copy, my copy is still in the press and looks exactly the same except I melted one corner with the iron, lol. It gives it character. Right? RIGHT?
This is a Red Dead Redemption 2 fic by Besselfcn featuring Arthur Morgan and Albert Mason--so well written, just an amazing voice and it's short but really packs a punch. I used covers like this and this for inspiration, although this one came out to be more complicated than those. Used some of my precious Duo bookcloth for the green, which looks amazing. Anyway, I think there are some really cool parts to this binding. More pics under the cut.
The endpapers, beautiful Renato Crepaldi papers that I knew I was going to use for this the instant I came across them on his instagram. They're meant to evoke a sunset (although they also look a lot like Jupiter to me--but the sunset part was what they were meant to look like, and the papers are part of the Skyscapes collection, so. Yeah.). It's so pretty up close, there are some really cool pictures on Crepaldi's instagram if you want to look at them more closely.
The spine, which echoes the wolf and moon theme from the front (I really like the spine, it's so small and usually so hard to line up right but this came out just perfectly)
The title page, foiled with toner reactive foil--boyfriend designed everything and he really liked this title page, even if it's the name of the first chapter and not the actual collection of stories, lol. But I liked it so much I couldn't help but include it. Along with:
All of the font designs and curlies were made by the boyfriend, but the pictures are all Arthur's. I found this reddit post where someone had collected all of the pictures Arthur draws in his journal, so these pencil drawings (well, printed pencil drawings) are all Arthur's actual pictures from the game. I thought it was such a neat touch and, because Arthur's journal is an important part of not just the game but this story as well, I thought it was important to include them. There are a few more random pictures for chapter breaks, etc. but they're not super fancy like this.
Anyway, not much more to say about this binding. It's getting easier to do these and I make fewer mistakes--I made the case on this just a smidge too short, or maybe made the textblock a smidge too big, but that was about it--and although the HTV is always a pain it's getting more reliable as well. This cover was a pain in the ass to weed, though, and needing to do it twice kind of sucked. Anything in the name of art though! I'm so excited for the author to see this and I'm really happy to be able to add this to my collection!

The Other Man | Trevor Zegras
summary: your fling with Trevor ended months ago, now that youâve got a boyfriend you canât help but miss the Ducks star.
song: Thinkinâ about Me - Morgan Wallen
request: yes/no
warnings: mature scenes, fem receiving oral, p in v, swearing, toxic Trevor, mentions of cheating (sorry Mason!)
word count: 3.8k
authors note: Wasnât gonna post this with super smut Thursday cause it wasnât based around smut. Is it wrong of me to say that writing this was actually really enjoyable..? I donât usually highlight cheating either but I felt like this song called for it. If you want to check out the rest of the celly you can do so here!
Your self restraint was being tested tonight.
Trevor threw back his beer as he watched Mason with his arms around you. The way Canadian let his hand settle just above your ass as you looked up at him with a smile when he mumbled something into your ear âyou two know each other?â Mason asked as he followed your line of sight when he locked eyes with his teammate.
You were quick to shake your head âended a long time ago,â you confessed as you pushed yourself forward to kiss his lips. It was needy and hungry because you were desperate to show Trevor that you had moved on.
Up until three months ago you two had a fuck buddy relationship that spanned over four months that you started with your neighbour. It was after a massive loss that the ducks were dealt at home and Trevor came to yours seeking a drink when one thing led to another and he ended up in your bed.
Things were going really well for the two of you, neither one wanted anything serious as you had just gotten out of a serious relationship. But one night when you had course work up to your eyeballs that you had to complete it was a rude awakening when you were met with the sounds of female moans from Trevorâs bedroom. It shouldnât have struck as big of a nerve as it did because you knew that he wasnât your boyfriend and you werenât his girlfriend. But it just sort of felt like if he wanted to start sleeping with other people he should have done it in month one or two of your ârelationshipâ not in the forth. Naturally with your hurt pride you sent him a text ending it the next morning.
This was the first time you had seen Trevor since and you knew that he knew he was having an effect on you. So you didnât stop Mason when his hand trailed the bottom of your dress or when he cupped your ass as it caused you to moan into his mouth. That gave the boy the space to let his tongue go into your mouth, his beer tasted cheaper than the one Trevor usually drank.
The one you were used to having in your mouth instead.
Mason smirked at the sound of his teammates whistling âsorry baby,â he turned a shade of pink as he was reminded about the fact that you two werenât alone.
You sucked at your teeth as you frowned âdonât be,â you shook your head when you saw in the mirror that was on the wall that Trevor had walked behind you âthat was hot.â You pointed out as you let your thumb clean the boys lip to void it of the smudged lipstick that was on it.
Jamie had just lost another game of beer pong as he let out a groan âcome play Mase!â He called out as the fellow Canadian was his usual partner for doubles games.
Your boyfriend sent you a sorry look âI can survive alone,â you smiled as you motioned to him to go âI should fix my lipstick anyways.â You added causing the grin on his face to increase.
Mason tucked a loose strand of your hair behind your ear âguess I should do this before you do then,â he mumbled as he hooked his fingers under your jaw before he captured your lips in another kiss.
Only stopping when your hand pressed on his chest âgo,â you motioned to him to walk to his teammate who clearly was still waiting.
The walk to the bathroom was much quieter than you thought it would be, with the only interruption coming when you were about to shut the door âsee youâve got a new friend.â Trevor mumbled as he pushed his hand between the wall and door.
You rolled your eyes as you walked to the sink âyou jealous?â You scoffed as you looked through your clutch to find your lipstick.
The centre player smirked as he made his way over to the wall next to the sink so he could lean against it âthere ainât no reason to be,â he shook his head causing you to furrow your eyebrows.
Trevor only continued ânot when youâre wearing my favourite dress,â it was true, that little black dress was something that Trevor had picked out for you when you were online shopping one day and the boy had come over.
He leaned forward so that his mouth was resting against your ear âyou knew Mase was my teammate,â he added smirking when you nodded âyou knew Iâd be here tonight and thatâs why youâre wearing this little outfit.â You hated how Trevor knew you like he did.
But when he crossed his arms and stared at your chest that only had your little necklace with a heart on it you were reminded of the fact that Mason was outside âI should go.â The uncertainty in your voice made it sound like you didnât even know if it was a question or a statement that fell from your lips.
When he didnât move you had to push past him âdonât forget that my door is also open when you realise he canât make you feel as good as I can.â The smug look on Trevorâs face made you want to slap him.
You spun back around to face him âMase has me coming for days.â You spat as you shoved your finger into his chest before you walked back out of the bathroom. It took you a moment to compose yourself as you forced a smile onto your face âyou winning?â You asked Mason as you found your place under his arm.
The Canadian wasnât a idiot when he saw Trevor send him a smirk as the American left the bathrooms âalways,â he murmured bringing his lips down to yours once more for a quick peck.
Trevor wasnât jealous, it wasnât a word that was in his dictionary. He was surprised when you walked into the bar and he was even more surprised when you walked in with Mason hot on your tail.
The two of your personalities just didnât work together, Mason was calm and collected often having to be forced to go out. Whereas you were this wild child often dragging Trevor to parties whilst you two were in your fuck buddy relationship. You needed someone who didnât need to control you but knew how to put up with you. Your needs in bed werenât vanilla either, and whilst the boys didnât talk about what or who they did in bed Trevor could have put money on his teammate not living up to your standards.
The thing you said back in the bathroom? That was simply a lie, and even Trevor knew it.
Yes Mason would make sure that you finished at the end of your session. But he didnât have you going more than one round unless it was a big night. Yet heâd always feel so bad when you struggled to walk the next morning (a sign that you felt meant you had been fucked right) that heâd treat you like you were glass the next few times you were in bed.
His amusement didnât last for long though because by the time he got home he was met with the sounds of your moans âright there Mase,â you groaned as your head dug itself into your mattress.
Mason had come home with you to drop you off but the look you gave him as you kissed him Goodnight had him following you upstairs within seconds.
You were close to your high as the Canadian wrapped his arms around your thighs in an attempt to make sure that you didnât move âso sweet,â he mumbled as he let his tongue swirl around your clit.
It was like you knew Trevor had just arrived home when your moans became louder âfuck Iâm gonna come,â you announced as your fingers went to the boys hair to make sure that he didnât pull away again.
The American grew irritated at the way his cock was against him as it grew hard in his shorts.
Your near scream was met with the sound of Trevor slamming his bathroom door shut as he was in dire need of a shower to help his little problem.
Not even an hour later Mason was already leaving your apartment. It was one stark difference between the two boys, Mason was this rule follower who adored the idea of restrictions but Trevor on the other hand loved breaking each and every obstacle that one could put in his way. Tomorrow morning the Ducks had an early training session, the Canadian didnât have his gear but he also didnât want to accidentally wake you up before he left.
The gesture should have been cute to you, it really should have warmed your heart that he thought about you like that. But instead it made you want to roll your eyes. When Trevor spent the night heâd wake you up being between your thighs regardless of what time it was. And if they needed to be at the airport really early to head out for a road trip the American would take you right to the point before you came and heâd leave you there until he got back only to give you the most mouth watering sex you could literally imagine.
You frowned at you didnât want Mason to leave yet âIâll see you sometime soon,â he smiled as he pecked your lips sending you a final glance before making his way down the hallway. Trevor smirked as he heard his teammate walk passed his door. You usually did everything in your power to stop Trevor from leaving, it wasnât because you were clingy it was just the fact that your evenings always ended with sex the next morning.
The American also couldnât say no to the sight of you wrapped up in a sheet with your swollen lips in a pout. Before you Trevor didnât even stay at a girls place after sex he also didnât usually let them come over to his place. But that was rule number two that he had broken for you, it was nice to see you in his sheets being so fucked out that you couldnât keep your eyes open.
The universe was cruel to you, it let your panties grow wet as the thought of your next door neighbour grew stronger. You sat on the couch as you sent Mason a message hoping that it would distract your brain, he planned to take you out tomorrow evening. Just the two of you, because you apparently deserved to be treated like his princess.
Those comments made you sick, not because you didnât like hearing them but because you wished that they were from the boy next door.
You sighed as you swallowed the shot of vodka that was in front of you in an attempt to get a boost of confidence or to stop your mind from listening to itself. You didnât want to go to Trevor, truly you did not.
Thatâs what you told yourself when you got off of the couch, when you slipped on your slides, when you walked out of your apartment and even to his, you repeated that same message.
The alarm bells rung through your ears getting louder with each knock on the door.
Knock
Knock
Knock
It was like clock work for Trevor, the way the smirk fell in his lips as he opened the door, the way his eyes traveled down your body. Letting him get the chance to take in what you looked like in your big T-shirt that was probably Masons and some Nike shorts.
The Ducks player licked his lips as he looked at you âknew youâd be here,â Trevor confessed as he pushed the door open a little wider so that you could come in.
You grumbled as you sent him a glare âyouâre an ass you know that right?â You scoffed as you crossed your arms unintentionally pushing your boobs up in the process.
It made the boy laugh âcare to elaborate?â He asked as he rubbed his hand along his jaw.
Your fingers ran through your hair âIâm meant to be happy,â you pointed out as you sucked at your teeth âMase is good to me, a good boyfriend, a good lover everything.â Tears began to well in your eyes you were so frustrated.
The boy found it amusing as he let his fingers run along the ends of your hair âbut?â Trevor trailed off as he waited for you to continue.
It wasnât meant to be this hard âbut even as heâs balls deep inside of me I still canât shake the thought of you!â You confessed raising your voice as it actually made you feel slightly better âbut thatâs not to say that he doesnât have good cock cause trust me-â your speech was cut off when Trevor pulled you towards him by the hem of your shirt âyou talk too damn much,â he mumbled as he kissed you. The feeling of his lips on yours was missed, the way his teeth clattered against yours made you want to laugh at how eager Trevor was.
The boy furrowed his eyebrows as you pulled away from him âI canât do this,â you announced as you remembered that you werenât a single girl anymore.
It made him laugh âlook at you trying to be a good girl now,â Trevor cooed as he ran his thumb over your lower lip. All of the things you two had been through, the sex in his car, the blow jobs in the janitors closet at the arena. It seemed like your morals were finally ready to call him out.
Your chest felt heavy âMase-â you reminded him of the man you called your boyfriend âhe isnât going to find out.â The hockey player pointed out as he placed his hands on either side of your face as he tilted it up to look at him.
Trevor licked his lips as he could see that you were actually thinking about it âpromise?â you pushed your lips into a fine line âpromise,â he nodded as he kissed you. This time it was sweeter, the neediness that was in the first one was now like a gentle caress of warmth.
You groaned as he softly bit your lip when he pulled away âwant to show me what Mason has been getting?â Trevor asked as he let his fingers dance over the hem of your shirt. Again the desperation in your response only fuelled his thoughts that Mason hadnât been treating you in the way you needed him to âplease,â you begged as his cold fingers moved to your waist.
To the untrained eye you two looked like a couple who hadnât seen each other in months, but honestly there was no love between you two. The relationship was built on a totally animalistic set up. Each of your brain set ups had been edited, broken down and rebuilt. The level of dopamine that was released each time you were ended up in bed with Trevor only increased the more you did it. In short this relationship wasnât from love, it was from an addiction.
You whimpered as the cool air hit your nipples âand he barely even marked you,â Trevor tsked his tongue as he looked at at your bare chest. There wasnât even a hickey on your thighs, where Masons head had been.
Trevor pushed you against his bed as you let out a gasp âshould we see how wet you are?â He asked in a husky tone as he let lips lips attach to your neck it caused you to groan âwant your eyes to watch me as I go down to your breasts,â the boy mumbled as he let his mouth go over the stiff peak whilst his hand went to the other.
You let your hand slap over your mouth âdonât stop those moans now,â the hockey player warned as he pulled your shorts off of your legs.
It made him smile as he leaned forward to kiss you âso pretty,â Trevor cooed as he watched you squeeze your eyes shut at the feeling of his shorts fabric and bulge that was encapsulated in it rubbed against your clit.
You didnât know what to say as your mouth went dry âjust fuck me,â you begged as he ran his fingers over your jaw âthereâs my needy girl.â He smiled as he kissed the shell of your ear.
Usually the foreplay was at the forefront of your nights together but right now you were both so horny that neither one of you could even think straight. So rather than teasing you Trevor decided to listen as he tapped his fingers on your lower lip âsuck,â he directed you to listen to him.
Your jaw went loose as you felt his fingers land on your tongue.
Like always you listened as you let your tongue swirl around his two digits.
It made him groan as he pictured his cock in your mouth instead, the one bit of love Trevor did hold in this was for your mouth. The way your tongue didnât attempt to over sensitise him but rather just aid his efforts in reaching that high. Your mouth sucked him dry and as athletic as Trevor was, even he needed a moment to breath after he came. One time he actually had to fall onto his bed because his legs turned into jelly.
Both of those things together made your mouth a close second to your pussy when it came to Trevorâs heaven on earth.
Those two wet fingers danced over your clit as you brought your hands up to tease your nipples yourself. That was something that always made the hockey player laugh, you seemed to be obsessed with being teased. And when he didnât do it to you, you seemed to remind him to do it again. It was one of the reasons why he knew you were too much for Mason. Not whilst you even managed to keep Trevor on his toes.
Thatâs why as your body began to hallucinate on that path of pleasure the hockey player pulled away causing you to whine at the loss of contact âgonna give you what you really want.â Trevor explained as he leaned forward to kiss your lips.
Your fingers fiddled with the buttons of his shorts as you remained as impatient as normal âplease,â you mumbled as you pulled your lips into a pout.
The competition of who had the least amount of clothes on was quickly evened out as the hockey players boxers came down with his shorts. His cock slapped against his torso as he was now achingly sore, your little noises from earlier had started his boner and it seemed that the snow ball just never stopped rolling down that hill since.
Your mouth watered as you watched him roll the condom over his boner âglad to see I still have that effect on you,â Trevor teased causing you to go red. The boy ran his protected cock over your clit as you shuddered âmy pretty girl,â he cooed as he thrusted into you.
Somehow he had this captivating ability to make your heart pound out of your chest in the most dirty of moments.
He hooked his fingers under her neck as he pulled you closer so that he didnât have to lean so far down when he kissed you.
The feeling of him inside of your was something you didnât realise that you had missed as much as you did, sure he was the image you thought of whenever you had your hand between your thighs but he didnât need to know that.
You locked your feet behind him âalways been so scared Iâm gonna leave you,â he teased as you had been edged by Trevor one too many times. Yes you liked the teasing but you were far too impatient when he screwed with you like that.
The hockey player dropped his head as he nipped at your neck. Your core clenched around him as his hand lazily found itâs way between your bodies as he let his thumb hit your clit at a pace that made your toes curl.
It was a good thing that you were the only two apartments with tenants because the whole floor would have heard the noises that fell from your lips âkeep fucking me so good,â you begged as your head nuzzled further into the mattress.
Each time you clench around Trevor he found the pace of his thumb only increasing âthis pussy was made for me,â he blurted out with a groan at the blissful noises that left your mouth.
A string of his name came through your lips in the form of a whisper âbet your boy couldnât made you feel like this.â Trevor mumbled as he lifted your legs making the angle that he thrusted into you deeper.
At this point you could barely remember what your name was âbelongs to you,â you mumbled almost causing Trevor to fall forward with the confession.
Maybe parts of him were exposed to the jealous touch because your announcement turned him feral âwanna hear you screw my name,â the hockey player had a shit eating grin slapped on his face as the moans speed out of your lips âgonna come,â you announced not having time to really think about it.
Trevor let his hand fall to your jaw as he was now using his core to keep himself upright âtogether,â he nodded in your direction as he sped up his pace for the final time as he wanted to finish strong and not have to push you through another round because you were even uncertain that could would last through it.
You came so hard that you swore you saw stars as your eyes screwed shut and white specks cast over the sea of black.
It almost knocked the wind out of you as Trevor pulled out of you letting his cock go soft.
He laughed at the sight of you grabbing at the sheet beneath you âIâll go get you a cloth.â The hockey player announced smiling when you just nodded. By the time he got back you were already fast asleep.
The next morning had came as Trevor watched in awe as you continued to sleep, the little mutters came from your lips as you seemed to dream about something. You looked so peaceful as you rolled over and nuzzled your head further into your pillow.
Yes his next move was one of of a dickhead, he knew that but that didnât stop Trevor from reaching over you to grab his phone. Or from taking that picture of you as he sent it to the one person you didnât want him to.

if we ever broke up / mason mount
summary: a conversation shared between two lovers in the past and the cruel reality of where things stand now.
pairing: mason mount x footballer!reader
warning: this is all fake!!!!! especially the fabrizio tweets please keep this in mind đ i hated doing that so much
author's note: me not making anything for mason and then two fics in 24 hours đ tittle inspired by the song if we ever broke up by royal sadness.
wc: 430 words (it's short, so i added a socmed au too :))
fc: esme morgan.
"what would you do if we ever broke up?".
the topic mason brought to bed isn't what you would normally expect, so it raises suspicions. "why are you thinking about it?" you laugh, still drawing circles in his bare skin. he laughs a bit too, and since your head is resting on his chest, your whole upper half vibrates with him until his laughter dies off.
ââââââââ
ââââââââ
"ben just broke up with his girl," he explains, and you get off him, instead supporting your weight with your arm on the pillow by his side, positioning yourself better to see his face. your brows are furrowed in preoccupation, since ben is practically your best friend at this point, and you weren't aware that he was going through this. "he's okay, don't worry," he smiled reassuringly, palm going to your cheek and caressing it in a soft and loving gesture.
"it's just, he's thinking about renovating his whole house, getting another dog, i don't know. made me think of what i would do if we ever broke up".
your eyebrows go up now, clearly interested in the topic. "and what would you do?" you ask, genuinely curious about it. "i don't know to be honest. if you broke up with me, i'd try to get you back" mason shrugs, and you roll your eyes, clearly displeased with his answer since he isn't really answering your question. "that's off the table".
"i don't know! maybe changing my hair?" he says unconvincingly, taking his hand that was previously resting on your cheek to sort out his hair. you like this hair on mason the best, with the top of his hair fluffy and the sides just a little bit faded out. not too much, though. "no! i would hate that," you pout, and he's looking at you with the biggest smirk on his face, shaking his head in disbelief, remembering that you almost broke down crying when he buzzed it last summer. "i love your hair like it is".

"maybe that's the whole point, no?" he questions, and your face sours in confusion. "what?" you ask, only to answer yourself the second after. "doing things i'd hate? like some sort of revenge?". mason lifts his palms up, like a kid that needs to prove his innocence. "i don't know!".
"if that's the goal, you going to united would definitely put you on the black list," you laugh, and the topic ends with a peck on his lips, and you settling down into your spot on his chest again, finally tired enough to sleep the night.

Exposed: The Secret Dominion of the Rothschilds, Rockefellers, and Morgans đĽ
Prepare to uncover the startling reality behind the world's most influential families and their immense control over the global economy. The Federal Reserve Cartel, consisting of the Rothschilds, Rockefellers, and Morgans, wields unprecedented power that extends well beyond the realm of oil.
Imagine this: The Four Horsemen of Banking, including Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo, unite with the Four Horsemen of Oil, such as Exxon Mobil, Royal Dutch/Shell, BP, and Chevron Texaco. Yet, their dominion doesn't stop there. Through an intricate web of private banks, they have expanded their influence to encompass the music industry. These colossal entities, along with Deutsche Bank, BNP, Barclays, and other European old money giants, hold the reins of the music industry, allowing them to shape its trajectory and exert their influence.
The Machiavellian machinations of the Rockefeller dynasty reach far and wide, commencing with their commercialization of music in the early 1900s. They orchestrated a sinister plot to shift the world's standard tuning of music to 440 pitch. This insidious frequency was known to provoke heightened aggression, psychosocial agitation, emotional distress, and even physical ailments. Behind closed doors, this manipulation resulted in financial gains for those complicit in the monopoly, including agents, agencies, and companies associated with the North American Rockefeller crime cartel and influential organizations.
Fast forward to the late 1980s when the Rockefellers summoned top music executives and artists to a highly clandestine meeting in Los Angeles. Their sinister agenda? To usher in the era of Controlled Rap Music, intricately linked to the privatization of U.S. prisons. These privately owned prisons, operated by the Rockefellers, Rothschilds, Bush family, and other influential figures, served as money laundering operations, tax exemption schemes, and pyramid scheme enterprises.
Crafting a deceitful plan, the Rockefellers aimed to control the rap industry and target black communities by promoting violent music that fueled oppression and civil unrest. They brought together leading executives and prominent black artists, binding them with strict confidentiality agreements. Their objective was clear: orchestrate violence within the rap music movement while major record labels secured exclusive rights for production and distribution across the United States. In return, they would receive shares and points within the private prison systems.
The Masonic scheme unfolded with precision, resulting in over 1,500 private prison systems incarcerating more than 1 million black teenagers by 1990. These vulnerable youths, expressing the generational trauma imposed upon them, unknowingly contributed to the Rockefellers' malevolent plan. The private prison systems reaped billions annually from the government, establishing an extensive money laundering network through inflated products, such as ramen noodles priced at 8 times their actual value. The flow of hundreds of billions from government funding, pyramid schemes, and insurance companies transformed prison privatization into a multi-trillion-dollar enterprise.
Local courts and judges mercilessly sentenced petty criminals and first-time offenders, filling the expanding private prisons. Consequently, the United States holds the unfortunate record for the highest number of incarcerated individuals in the world, with an unprecedented number of prisons. This was not a coincidenceâit was a meticulously orchestrated plan by the Rockefellers.
But their influence doesn't stop there.
As the true faces of those who wield global authority are revealed, the Rothschilds and Rockefellers find themselves targeted by military alliance operations aiming to dismantle the Rothschilds' deep state power in Europe, the UK, Russia, and China.

if you're still looking for random requests/inspo âĽď¸ how do you think it would go down if Arthur tried teaching Albert to hunt??
Shot
Content: Arthur Morgan & Albert Mason, hunting, bromance, romance?, 2AM if you squint, cowboys having feelings.
Authors note: Hello Hello! It's been a minute since I've posted anything. I've been dealing with burnout for the last few months and typing words has been like pulling teeth. Even the joys of Black Hills Redemption couldn't pull me out of my slump. But this ask was sent in to me and it sparked an Idea⢠so here we are! Hope y'all enjoy.
I really liked this prompt a lot and I had a ton of fun writing it!
I left their relationship a little more open. Y'all know I ship it like FedEx but I didn't really feel like going into the romantic aspects of the relationship so this could be a romance or a bromance. Readers choice.
As always this was written on my phone so if you see any typos or weird autocorrect things, no you don't.
Also just a shout-out to Matt if you're reading this! You sparked some Albert content in my brain which has been very helpful for overcoming the writer's block so thank you! đ
The full story can be read below or on AO3 (Must be logged in to view on AO3. Blame AI bots for that.)
~~~~~~~~~~~
âIf you're going to be out in the wilderness, you need to know how to survive,â Arthur had explained to Albert over some drinks at the Valentine saloon. âWhat if your horse spooks and runs off with all your supplies?â
Arthur bumped into Albert on the road into town; Arthur looking for a drink to celebrate a job well done, and Albert riding in to rent out a hotel room for the night. After some friendly chatter on the ride in the two had gone to the saloon together for a drink.
âI know I'm not the adventurous type, but I do know how to make a fire.â Albert huffed good naturedly.
âBut do you know how to find water, shelter? Do you know good water from bad? Can you hunt?â
âMr. Morgan, you know I'm not terribly fond of the sport.â Albert cut in.
âAin't a sport when it's survival on the line,â Arthur countered. âI'm not talking about shooting an animal just for fun, or to show off. I'm talking about finding a rabbit to eat when you're on the brink of starvation.â
âWellâŚâ
âListen, I understand why you hate trophy hunters. Killing an animal and leaving most of it out to rot is a damn waste. If I hunt something, I use as much as I can. I eat the meat, turn the pelt into something useful, use any part of it I can. Even if it's just a little trinket on my belt. That's the kind of hunting I'm talking about.â
âI suppose I don't have much experience there,â he admitted. âMy father took me duck hunting once but it was just sport. He was usually busy drinking with his business partners. I never really paid much attention.â
âWell, now's as good a time as any. âSpecially if you're gonna be wandering the wilds taking photos of animals.â
~~~~~~
âI-Iâm not so sure about this, Mr. Morgan,â Albert stammered as the two men dismounted their horses just east of Twin Stack pass, in the fields south of the oil field. âI really don't think it's necessary.â
âYou're the one wandering the backcountry taking photographs of wild animals. You need some survival experience.â Arthur replied. âShooting bottles out behind the saloon can only get you so far. You need to try on something real.â
"Mr. Morgan IâŚâ Albert stopped walking, nervously rubbing his hands together. Arthur turned to face him. âI don't know if I can do it.â
Arthur softened slightly. He understood Albert, to a point. He remembered vividly when Hosea had taken him hunting for the first time when he was 15. The thought of killing an animal had turned his stomach. He actually threw up after his first downed deer. He had always had a soft spot for animals, and never wanted to see them suffer. Any time he went hunting, even now, he'd kick himself for hours if it wasn't a clean shot, and the animal suffered at his hands.
âFirst off, please call me Arthur,â he began, stepping toward the man.
âThen please, call me Albert.â
âAlright, Albert,â Arthur chuckled. âI know it ain't easy. You don't want to see the poor animal suffer. You don't want to become like those poachers who waste everything for a trophy.â
âExactly,â Albert sighed, openly relieved that Arthur understood his hesitancy.
âBut we ain't talking about that kind of hunting. We're talking about survival. Catching a rabbit to feed yourself for the night. That's it. It's no different than eating beef or pork. Just more work.â
âI guess I see your point,â Albert relented.
âWith any luck you'll never have to hunt for food. But if your horse spooks or you get stranded or for any reason you need to survive, you need to know how to hunt.â
âAlright,â Albert straightened up, steeling himself for the lesson at hand. âLet's go.â
âGood,â Arthur said, patting Albertâs shoulder. âNow you might want to invest in a little varmint rifle, or even just a standard rifle for protection, seeing as you're out trying to photograph predators. But for today, you can use mine.â Arthur pulled out his varmint rifle and handed it to Albert.
The gun looked a little awkward in the photographerâs hands, like he wasn't entirely comfortable holding it. But he and Arthur had done some practice shots before heading out here, so he at least had some familiarity with the weapon.
âCheck that it's loaded,â Arthur instructed, and Albert paused, following Arthur's earlier lesson on loading the gun. Knowing he'd emptied it before putting it on his horse, Arthur handed him some ammo to load the gun before Albert could even ask.
âThank you,â Albert chirped, nodding politely to Arthur as he began loading the gun. âWould you bring something as well?â Albert glanced over at Arthur as he slid the bullets into their place. âIn case my shot is bad, will you bring a gun to finish it off so it doesn't suffer?â
âSure,â Arthur agreed. âI think that's a fine idea.â Arthur slipped his bow and arrow from the saddle. âNo point in bringing in another gun and ruining the meat.â He explained.
âRight,â Albert hummed. âIf we're going to hunt the animal, we should make sure it's usable.â
âFollow me,â Arthur said, guiding Albert up the hill a little way.
âSee these little holes in the hillside?â Arthur asked, pointing to a few small caves in the dirt as they climbed âEntrances to the warren.â
âHow do you know they're not badger holes?â
âToo many to be a badger den. Besides the tracks around are rabbit, not badger.â Arthur shrugged. âCome on. We'll get up here on the rocks overlooking the warren and wait.â
Carefully the two men positioned themselves up on the rocks near the top of the hill, looking down over the slope. Arthur crouched down with a sigh, and Albert moved to do the same.
âNow what?â
âNow we wait,â Arthur grunted. âIt's cooling off so they'll likely come out to feed as the shadows grow longer. Just need a little patience.â
âRight,â Albert breathed, settling in on the rock on one knee, varmint rifle gripped loosely in one hand.
The two men waited about twenty minutes, neither saying a word. Albertâs knees had grown sore, then moved beyond, to that painful numbness. Despite this he kept still and did his best not to make a sound. Finally his patience was rewarded.
âOh, look! A rabbit,â Albert whispered. âWhat a beautiful shot. I should get a pictureââ
âThat ain't the kind of shooting we're doing today, Albert,â Arthur chuckled in a low whisper, reminding the photographer why they were there. He knocked an arrow in his bow, ready just in case Albert needed the assist.
âOh. Right, of course.â Albert whispered. He took a deep breath and raised the gun.
âGood, good,â Arthur soothed. âGet it's head right in your sights for a clean kill, wait for it to stop to eat for a moment.â Arthur could feel the man trembling a little beside him, but Albert was focused on the task at hand. âTake a deep breath in, and out. Always shoot on empty lungs.â
Albert took a couple deep breaths to steady his trembling hands. Everything else seemed to go quiet, and as he finished an exhale, he pulled the trigger.
The shot was good, but the rabbit turned it's head at the last second, and the kill wasn't as clean as either men hoped. Arthur quickly followed it with an arrow, ending the animals suffering.
âDamn,â Albert sighed, defeated.
âDon't beat yourself up. It would have been a good shot if it hadn't moved. Unfortunately sometimes that happens. They ain't prone to just sitting still and letting you get the shot,â Arthur assured him, patting his shoulder. âEven if I hadn't been here, you could have ended it's suffering with another shot, or a twist to the neck.â
Albert shuddered at the thought. But deep down he knew Arthur was right. âI never got a shot like that when my father took me hunting,â he noted.
âWell, the kind of hunting your father was doing sounded a lot more like an excuse to get out of the house and go drinking, instead of actually hunting,â Arthur grunted, swinging his bow over his shoulder. âNow let's go get our catch and clean it.â Arthur offered Albert a hand up.
âOh,â Albertâs face paled. âWe're going to skin and butcher it too?â
âWould be a waste to just leave it here,â Arthur pointed out. âIt's death should mean something, even if it's only filling the bellies of two fools like us.â
âI suppose you're right.â
âCome on let's set up a camp further up the hill and we'll have some supper.â
~~~~~~
Albert looked rather squeamish as Arthur showed him how to skin and butcher the rabbit. But he watched with rapt attention, following Arthurs every move with his eyes.
âAnd that's about it for cleaning it,â Arthur said, holding up the skinned and cleaned rabbit by its back legs. âThen all that's left to do is cook it. Could just throw it over the fire, but if you've got some herbs, it makes it a little more palatable. Lucky for us,â Arthur reached into his satchel and pulled out some thyme. âI've got some seasoning.â
âA gourmet campfire meal,â Albert chirped, much to Arthur's amusement. Using some rendered animal fat he rubbed the herbs into the meat before placing it on a crudely constructed spit over the fire.
âThank you for teaching me,â Albert continued, giving Arthur a small smile. âI know I've been, shall we say, a reluctant student. But I know that it's good for me to know how to do this.â
âJust don't want to hear about you starving in the wilderness,â Arthur grunted as he sat down by the fire. âBy dumb luck you've somehow survived enough trouble with the animals you're photographing. I'd like to keep it that way.â
âIt wasn't dumb luck, it was with your help.â Albert settled in the dirt across the fire from him.
âI've only helped a couple of times,â Arthur shrugged, pulling out his journal.
âMaybe, but you've helped more than I can say,â Albert mirrored Arthur, retrieving his own notebook and pen to begin scrawling notes from the day.
âWhatever you say,â Arthur shook his head, turning his attention to his journal.
As the rabbit cooked the men spent the time in silence, each writing down the events of the day. Albert noted the animals he saw, the animals he photographed and where he was when he did so. He also notated the spots he visited that had resulted in no wildlife.
Arthur journaled about the job he worked, totalling up the earnings and doing the math of what to provide to the gang. He also tidied up a quick sketch he'd done of the burnt town below Horseshoe Overlook, as well as a chipmunk he drew.
Both men finished up their writing by noting the coincidence of meeting up with the other, and the events that led them to be sharing a campfire out in the Heartlands. Not that either man would know he was included in the other man's writing.
âRabbit should be about done,â Arthur said, closing his journal and tucking it away.
âMarvelous,â Albert set his notebook aside and pulled out a pair of tin camping plates and forks. âI have a pair of these we can use.â
Arthur took the plates with a grunted thanks, using his knife to carve the meat off the rabbit until the plates had an even helping of rabbit. He handed one plate back to Albert before settling in with his plate, digging in immediately.
Albert picked at the rabbit slowly, seemingly lost in thought as he stared at the sparse meat on his plate. He took a bite or two, slowly, as if tasting it for the first time.
âYou ever eaten rabbit before, Albert?â Arthur asked, studying the man.
âYes,â Albert flashed Arthur a sheepish smile. âMany times. I suppose it's just different when you see the entire process. See it going from a living animal to a meal on your plate is a bit⌠jarring. Usually I see it already carved at the butchers, or fully cooked on my plate in front of me.â
âI suppose it would be jarring,â Arthur hummed, scratching his chin. âBut after all it's just nature. If we didn't eat it, a fox or coyote probably would have.â
âVery true,â Albert sighed. The two men were quiet for a moment, Arthur taking another bite of rabbit while Albert was lost in thought. âI admire you, Arthur.â
Arthur nearly choked on his food, pounding on his chest a few times to correct it's passage to his stomach. He also had to push aside the way his heart skipped a beat. He'd spent too long living the life of the delinquent outlaw cowboy. There's no way Albert meant it like that.
âWhy dâyou say a fool thing like that?â Arthur huffed.
âBecause I do. You have such a high regard for nature. A trait most hunters I've met are sorely lacking. A respect for life that others just don't have.â
Arthurâs face fell slightly. âI really don't.â He huffed, attempting to lighten the mood with a chuckle.
When he braved to look at Albert once more he only saw a knowing half-smile. Did he know who Arthur was? Well, to be fair he hadn't exactly used a cover name. All Albert would have to do is read the paper and he'd know who Arthur was. But if he knew, why hadn't he turned Arthur in?
Albert just shook his head, as if reading Arthur's thoughts. âRespect for animal life, then,â he countered.
Arthur didn't know what to say. Albert was such a gentle, polite man. How could he be sitting here, talking to a known killer, and calling him admirable?
âGuess I got enough blood on my hands,â Arthur shrugged, deflecting the compliment, as usual. âSeen enough suffering without adding any more to it.â
âI think there are too many people in the world who don't care how much blood they spill, human or animal,â Albert remarked. âThey lose their humanity.â
âMost days mine is hanging by a thread,â Arthur grumbled, voice full of self loathing.
âI think you've got a stronger grip on your humanity than you think,â Albert set his food aside, attention all on Arthur.
âYou⌠you understand what I do.â Arthur waved his hand, not really wanting to say it. Albert nodded a confirmation. âYou've probably seen my name in papers, or on bounty posters. You know I ain't a good man. Battery, robbery⌠murder. I don't think I could get much worse. I ain't got much humanity left.â
âIt's true those are some⌠high crimes,â Albert relented. âAnd yet, in talking to you, I see more humanity than I do in the high society crowd. The leaders of the nation are soulless. They're only out for themselves. Wouldn't help an old lady cross the street, let alone random fools they find in the wilderness.â
âYou sure you're not an outlaw?â Arthur huffed. âSound a lot like my mentor. He loves to ramble on about how crooked society is.â
âWe both know if never cut it as an outlaw,â Albert snickered. âI'd die on day one. And it wouldn't be to a gun. I'd sooner trip and get trampled.â The two men laughed at that before Albert continued.
âWhatever your reasons for doing the things you do, I don't think you're the monster the papers make you out to be,â Albert explained. âEvery time I've met you, you've been nothing but helpful and kind, if a little gruff. You may be a sinner, but aren't we all?â
âI think my sins may be a little greater than yours,â Arthur scoffed.
Albert only shrugged. âMaybe. Or maybe the greatness of our sins varies by the hands we're dealt. The life we live. It's easy to be good when you're born with a silver spoon. It's harder to be good when you're fighting every day just to survive.â
âYou a philosopher now?â Arthur chuckled.
âI've had a lot of time to ponder life's intricacies of late. Seeing nature in all her beauty will do that.â Albert shrugged. âBut my point is, I've met you a handful of times now. You've never given me any reason to doubt you. The papers say you're a monster but I consider you⌠a friend.â
âA friend?â
âYes,â Albert affirmed. âA friend, if you'll have me.â
Arthur was quiet for a moment, staring at Albert, trying to decide how to respond. He clearly couldn't respond with his true thoughts on the matter. He wasn't any good at the sappy emotional side of friendship. His friendships usually considered of having each other's backs and teasing each other relentlessly. Maybe the occasional fishing trip.
âYou shouldn't have left your food unattended,â Arthur noted, nodding to the tin plate Albert had set down. It was now empty, the bushy tail of a fox disappearing into the bushes behind him. The fox let out it's laughing call as it darted away with what was left of Alberts dinner.
âGod damnit all,â Albert huffed, grabbing his plate and glaring after the fox.
âHere. You can have some of mine.â
âNo, you eat, I'll be fine.â Albert tried to protest, but Arthur had already halved the meat on his plate and plopped it onto Albertâs.
âThat's what friends are for,â Arthur shrugged. It was the best way for him to confirm Albert's statement. They were friends, as odd of a pair as they may have been. Albert grinned, bobbing his head in thank you before digging in to the small amount of rabbit that remained.
âSo, what else have you gotten pictures of since I last saw you with the horses?â Arthur asked.
âOh let's see. Well I did finally get a picture of a coyote after our first encounter,â he hummed. âAnd then the wolves. But I showed you that one. The horses, um⌠oh I caught a beautiful shot of some bison rutting in the dirt. And a loon on the river.â
The rest of the evening consisted of the two men swapping stories of their adventures. Albert detailed all the many trials he'd faced trying to complete his project. Arthur in turn told him if the strange things he'd seen on his adventures. The glowing green light over a cabin in the heartlands. The cauldron of grey liquid up in the hills of Ambarino. The strange bones he'd found in, on and around Mount Shann. Just little things, talking long after the moon rose in the sky, until neither man could keep from yawning.
An unlikely friendship, but one that made a huge difference in both men's lives.
Author Interview
Thanks for the tag, @littlelindentree ^_^ Happy New Year!
1. how many works do you have on AO3?
20
2. what's your total AO3 word count?
981,132
3. what fandoms do you write for?
I have written for Dragon Age: Inquisition, Red Dead Redemption 2, Horizon: Zero Dawn, The Last of Us, and The Walking Dead
4. what are your top five fics by kudos?
The Lily Farm (Arthur Morgan x Mary Beth Gaskill, RDR2)
That he may hold me by the hand (Arthur Morgan x Albert Mason, RDR2)
The Dead Season (Solavellan, DAI)
Magnolia (Bethyl, TWD)
Yours, Sadie Adler. (Sadithur, RDR2)
5. do you respond to comments?
Yes, as often as I can. Sometimes, I forget on older fics. I'm sorry about that. If someone is rude to me in the comments though, I will respond rudely!
6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Probably Teen Wolf. It's a story collection so the ending isn't really "true," but it's the end of Solas and Ghilan'nain's love story, in my mind. It's sad and bittersweet, as in the story, they are talking about building a house on the back acreage of Solas's mother's property, but I envision the very next day as being the day that Andruil invades the Weathers, kidnapping both Ghilan'nain and Solas's mother Leanathy, and beginning the Great War. In the ensuing days, Andruil's men leave Solas for dead, and when he wakes up, he goes to Mythal and begs her to free his mother in exchange for his loyalty. She accepts, rescuing and protecting Leanathy in her Blue Palace, and Solas becomes her Bodyguard. Eventually, he is elevated to her General, then he becomes her lover. During the war, after Ghilan'nain's betrayal, the Evanuris murder Mythal, and Solas, out of vengeance and grief, builds the veil and imprisons them all, including Mythal's soul, which would, over time, resurrect into her body, using special magic taught to her by Solas's mother many thousands of years before.
7. what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Well, most of my long fics are unfinished. I'm sorry about that. I think that The Dead Season has a happy ending. So does Yours, Sadie Adler., thought it is bittersweet.
8. do you get hate on fics?
Not tons at all. I have gotten a few rude commenters over the years, mainly people being weirdly critical of my writing style in ways that are, frankly, moronic, and also some people who just want me to write more smut. But I don't write much smut anymore, and I don't think fics need smut to be worthy or interesting. If you only want a smut fic, you probably won't like my writing. Remember that tags exist so that you can see what you're getting into before you crack the first chapter!!!!
9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?
Lol. Speaking of. I used to write much more. It was never the overly explicit kind and I didn't have any specific kinks I liked to explore, but I wrote a lot of it for DAI and RDR2. I still write sex scenes for sure, it's just that they tend to be character driven.
10. do you write crossovers? what's the craziest one you've written?
I have never written a real crossover; however, I do have some crossover characters in The Lily Farm. In the later chapters, I have two main characters who are taken from other texts: Woodrow Call from Lonesome Dove and LaBoeuf from True Grit. Both are Texas Rangers, and in my fic, they owe Dutch a few rather large favors. They help Arthur and Mary Beth on the river boat job, which goes terribly wrong. They also help break John out of federal prison. They are two of my favorite characters in the fic.
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of. I've had plenty of art stolen over the years and I don't even keep track anymore. Mainly it just gets reposted without credit on like, Pinterest. Oh well!
12. have you ever had a fic translated?
Not that I know of! But I am amenable.
13. have you ever co-written a fic before?
I don't think so!
14. what's your all-time favourite ship?
I have several though Bethyl and Solavellan are probably tied for first.
15. what's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
The Lily Farm. In truth there's not a ton left to write. But it's been 84 years like I don't even remember the geography of the game. I would have to replay RDR2, at least through chapter 4. I also wish I could finish Zero, my Niloy fic for HZD. I still think about them, and I still occasionally get really really nice comments on that fic. I honestly wish I could finish all my old fics. Like That he may hold, which also has maybe one closing chapter left to write. I wish I could finish As You Were, too, my TLOU fic, just so that I can save Joel's life, and as a big fuck you to Neil Druckmann.
16. what are your writing strengths?
I'm not sure. Pacing has probably always been my greatest strength.
17. what are your writing weaknesses?
Overwriting, getting bored. My issue is often that I start a fic with modest goals but then those goals get bigger and bigger as I go, and I can't help myself. Then, I eventually get bored and I don't finish. I view fanfic as a way for authors to express themselves and their hyperfixations in the moment. I think that the quality of being "unfinished" is, in an of itself, conventional to fanfiction; however, I still view my general lack of focus as a weakness.
18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Don't translate it. Just put it there. If your reader cares enough and doesn't know the translation, they'll look it up. If they don't care enough to do this, then they're not your target audience. The internet makes this sort of thing very easy.
19. first fandom you wrote for?
Technically it's the boyband fandom (*NSync and Backstreet Boys, mainly) in like 1998, but in actuality, it's Dragon Age: Inquisition in 2016.
20. favourite fic you've written?
Probably Yours, Sadie Adler. It feels the most complete, and I still don't know how I managed to write that fic so quickly, when I was like three weeks postpartum with my second baby, and with very little revision. It just flowed out of me, like it was already written in my mind, and all I had to do was type it out. I have received some really lovely comments on it over the years. It seems to affect people deeply, which makes me very happy, because it came from a very raw place in my heart.
I will tag @thevikingwoman @bearlytolerant @roguelioness @gneebee @shallow-gravy @a-shakespearean-in-paris @pipergirl17 @sasusc and @im-immortal <3
hello!! please tell me more about your detective for M whoâs gonna freak out when they say ily because that reaction and the aftermath is going to be so so good đđťââď¸đđťââď¸đđťââď¸
hello to you too! hope you're doing well đ i'm really sorry it took me so long to reply, but i needed to sort through my very confusing thoughts to give them some sort of consistency, sjksjks. if you guys ever find yourselves curious about any of my ocs (which you can easily find here) please, do not hesitate to ask! i just love talking aimlessly about them and receiving these types of questions makes my heart all fuzzy and warm, so thank you for taking an interest in one of my wayhaven detectives!
okay, you didn't ask for my stupid rambles (and i swear one day i'll stop â *insert the 'today is not that day' meme*) so here are some facts:
RUE PARKER
âthe wayhaven chroniclesâ canon
personality stats: sarcastic, easygoing & charming (also: not really a stickler for the rules and authority in general);
professional skills: deduction, science & combat â no matter what she's doing or how many times she's done it, the results will always be perfect and spot on;
rebecca â relationship status: not overly bad. honestly? could be better, but it could be much, much worse (personal note #1: rebecca is not my favourite character in the series and i'd probably be happier if she had died already â fingers crossed for book 5, sorry-not-sorry, becky â or, at least, if the narrative/characters would stop forcing the readers/mc to forgive her);
tina & verda â relationship status: best pals. her ride-or-die squad;
felix â relationship status: best friend. she found a mischievous kindred soul to relate with and if you ever encounter them together... run (there's this scene at the beginning of book 3, where adam/ava asks why the werewolves attacked them and rue answered with: "i may have made one teeny sarcastic comment", causing adam's/ava's soul to leave their body, lol);
bobby â relationship status: ex-boyfriend (personal note #2: i've always hated that the mc's gender/sexuality is what determines the ros' and bobby's gender) â she's not bothered by him at all, but since her responses are very sarcastic, well... rest in peace, robert marks;
mason â relationship status: a big, bright question mark;
personal canon
if i have to choose a few words to describe her, i'd say: naturally talented, wild card & big dick energy;
hyperactive little kid â couldn't stay still at all. always exploring the world around her, climbing up some tree/furniture or hiding somewhere in the house/backyard to play (the sitters tasked with keeping an eye on her went batshit crazy all. the. time);
as i said here, rue is extremely smart, often prone to boredom if something is not mentally challenging/stimulating enough (which can also be applied to her romantic relationships);
if you ever need someone to cut out some tension (or spike it up even more), she is the right gal for you. unfortunately, 99% of the time, the saying 'taking things seriously' is not part of her vocabulary (e.g. in book 3, when finding out about the trappers' bounty, she says: "how much am i worth?"). what can i say, she really likes to have a good time;
sarcasm is her default mode, plus she always downplays her feelings/emotions by either ignoring them or making badly-timed jokes;
rarely bothered by anything (e.g. in book 3, during the 'fight' with mason/morgan at the bakery, rue replies with: "me being naked is way more important to you") plus, not a jealous person ever (alima included, when she'll make her appearance);
was in an on-again/off-again relationship with bobby. after a while, though, she got exceedingly bored by the monogamous lifestyle and decided to dump his ass;
never had serious relationships/fell in love before â this is partly because: a) she's a free-spirited person & b) she's scared shitless of commitment (mostly caused by rook's death and seeing what that did to rebecca). in a sense, she and mason are quite similar;
just thinking about the word 'love' has her panicking really bad (i.e. after the 'date' at the antique shop), so when mason will inevitably confess his feelings to her... the only way i can see this going is with rue assuming it's all some kind of prank but, once her huge brain will catch on the fact that mason is not exactly the joking type, she will get cold feet and blearily say: "uhh, thank you, i guess?". after realizing what she has said/done, she will skedaddle so fast that the only thing people are going to see is an indistinctive, blurry form (later, she will definitely wish for an asteroid to hit her);
likes to sing everywhere: in the shower, at her workplace, inside the car, you name it (and she's also very good at hitting those high notes too â while she was attending the police academy, 'the karaoke incident' happened and no one beside her and tina knows the truth about it. verda is still trying to unsuccessfully bribe them to know what took place);
excellent chef â loves to cook/bake when she has some free time (she just thinks the entire process is pretty neat, starting with a few ingredients to achieve a full-on meal);
#thank you again mal! ⼠(& i profusely apologize for this long-ass essay that came out of my brain đ)#interactive fiction#the wayhaven chronicles#giaâs musings đŹ#oc: rue parker
"stop giving them european features"... M is literally european fam. Us euro mediterraneans come in various skin tones, sure, from to pale to tan but we nonethless are white. Tanned skin, dark eyes and dark hair aren't features exclusive to any race here. I get tumblr mostly adopts american stance on race meaning that tan=poc but that's really not the case here, we don't need you defending us, we're good thanks lol M being drawn as paler than their description is the same as a long haired character being drawned with short hair to us: inaccurate (as most fan art ever made) but not offensive as pale vs tan doesn't have racial connations here. Obvs it could be different if we knew that M was greek in terms of nationality but not necessarily have greek origins but we were told they were greek in an ask about UB *ethnicities* so literally... no need to get upset on our behalf, we don't need you to, it just comes off as weird for you all to act this way tbh
it's so funny you started off with that line because when i posted it, i thought to myself "i don't need to clarify that that's about felix/farah/nate/nat right? no way! people can figure that out!" but i guess i was wrong :)
i did not need an essay about race versus ethnicity in my inbox, because regardless, this isn't about that. this is about artists having skintone palettes straight from the author and blatantly going lighter than that, whether it's about mason/morgan or not. (i myself am mixed race but only refer to myself as white because you wouldn't know i'm mixed race at first glance without discussing it with me. i get it. trust me.) and the point you made about hair is just.. not a good stance to take. you cannot compare skintones to hair in any context.
my question is, how do you not see this â what you've sent me â as enabling behavior? you would rather allow people to run rampant *like they already are* and continue to draw mason/morgan lighter than their canon description because? you personally don't feel a type of way about it? you can feel however you want to feel about it, but that doesn't solve the problem i â and so many players of color in the fandom â have brought up.
and just to reiterate, there are other characters that i mentioned. felix/farah and nate/nat, who get the most egregious whitewashing. instead of spending your time sending me a long anon about how you don't think pale mason/morgan art is whitewashing, you could care more about the other two massive issues that i presented. they don't just vanish because you're annoyed that i worded something poorly.
i understand where you're coming from, but there are bigger problems than me saying "stop giving them european features" instead of "stop giving f and n european features".
#i understand what you're trying to say but to me whitewashing is whitewashing#lightening skintones is wrong no matter how you try to twist it#this is more about setting and maintaining a standard than anything#i'm not trying to argue with you in my inbox though â if you send another im gonna have to block you sorry#asks
I agree with the fact that she has also improved on this and I'm glad that she's listening to fans and decided to get sensitivity readers. I love wayhaven, since it got me into IF so it has a special place in my heart, but anyways here are some of my thoughts. đ
Disclaimer: I'm not attacking anyone or any author. I love IFs and I love Wayhaven, this is just some thoughts that I had, so please don't come for me.
đđžââď¸đ¨đ¨
Morgan/Mason
I wish that M's racial background was made clearer by the author, because it is clear that M is a POC due to their skin tone, but I don't remember the author ever clarifying more of M's background apart from the fact that they're Greek. Greece is a very diverse country, are they greek both nationality wise and ethnicity wise, do they have turkish roots? like idk how to explain and idk how old M is, but I hope that this gets at least clarified because before the skin tones were released the only description of M that I found was them being vaguely described as Greek with a Mediterranean skin tone if I recall correctly. I do think that this lack of clarification did in part contribute to the white-washing of M in the past but I am glad that M's skin tone has been clarified via the release of skin tone palettes. As a queer Mediterranean POC myself seeing M (who's also queer, poc and Mediterranean) get oversexualised both by the author and some of the fandom kind of makes me sad because they have more layers to them than just being interested in sex. If you play their route you get to see that there's a lot more to them than that.
Adam/Ava
I am also demi-romantic so seeing A's demi-sexuality being written as a second thought kind of just....idk. I just feel that their demi-sexuality is constantly being invalidated by the fans and at times in the game but maybe that's just me idk. I feel the same way since part of the fandom also dismisses A's demi-sexuality as this sexual-repression idea as if their demi-sexuality is an obstacle to overcome or something and it just makes me give a bit of a side-eye. I just feel that the author sometimes treats their sexuality as an after thought, but I hope that it gets a bit better.
Team Alpha and Sin
In terms of Team Alpha, I have seen and heard that some indigenous/Maori people have expressed discomfort at the portrayal of their ethnicity in Team Alpha being rooted in harmful stereotypes such as having them being werewolves, being portrayed as aggressive and hypersexualised. And Sin, an Assyrian man being trapped and enslaved is a thing that kind of makes me a bit sad since Assyrians don't have a lot of representation in the first place.
Felix/Farah
I absolutely adore F, they're an absolute delight. However, at times it feels like in some instances that F is infantilised by both the author, in-game and some individuals from the fandom. Sometimes it can feel like F is sometimes side-lined as the black best friend stereotype. At times it feels like F is not given as much thought as the other ROs in the asks answered. But the series hasn't finished so we shall see. I do think that her writing of F has improved to some extent though. I think this at times results in some fans categorising F into the black best friend stereotype rather than actually playing their route and finding out that they're actually such an interesting and layered character. I also feel that their character is not really taken as seriously as other best friend to lovers ROs who are white/ambiguously POC characters because of internalised racial stereotyping (is that what it's called in english? idk). I love F and they're my favourite RO so I hope that they will get more love as well as other black and darker-skinned ROs my beloveds.
Final Thoughts
All in all, I would also love to see more POC that aren't just East/Asian or a character who is made to be ambiguously brown with no thought of their ethnicity for the sole purpose of fulfilling some sort of checklist just because 2/8 or 1/5 ROs are POC. I do hope that authors list the characters ethnicity and nationality or at least state it because them mentioning that the character has golden/bronze skin does nothing for me. Are they black, are they south east asian, are they indigenous, like idk what its supposed to mean. Also ethnicity does not equal nationality and ethnicity is also as equally as important as race, so seeing some authors state that a character is South American or that a character is Asian and then leaving it at that also does nothing for me. Like are they Afro-Cuban, Asian-Argentinian/ Are they Han-Chinese or maybe Hui-Chinese? Are they Malay- Singaporean or maybe Indonesian? Every country is so diverse and have multiple ethnicities so saying that they're Latino and not explaining the characters' ethnicity or race at the very least just kind of leaves my head scratching at times.
don't worry, you're on anon, beloved. if they're gonna at anyone it will be me ;-P (jk. you're fine <3)
a follow up this. if anyone's following along ehheheh
i THINK she said M was white. Which wqereweq roflmao. LMAO.
But also DON'T QUOTE ME ON IT. There is so much back and forth about it, I genuniely don't remember. But IIIII DO FEEL M is stated to be a very 'tan' white person. M is spicy white. Still there are a lot of stereotypes, I agree (they're just worse if M was (is??) of color).
I always did find how she spoke about them vs how she wrote about them to be weird. (She does the same with F. In that the nuance in the text wasn't same in how she answered the asks) I think, in her defense, it might have just been lack of awareness of the stereotypes as well as a struggle in keeping things basic, thus falling back on them. But it was a problem, nevertheless. And I do feel she's been working on that. So there is that.
Still, it is good to bring up nonetheless, because it is a good thing to remember / keep in mind based 1. characters like M will always exist and like you stated the problem wasn't just Sera. (I have seen an improvement in fandom too tho, so I hope that translate in other avenues) and 2. I've seen a lot of growth in IF writers, so again people should keep that in mind for their future.
Nah, it's not just you. It's still a problem lmao. Hopefully again, things will change re: Sera (I will give credit - and I know I probably shouldn't but sadly so many DON'T - for LISTENING; and I also don't think A being demi-sexual was part of her plans, so maybe that's why it feels that way in the text. Not that it's an excuse, as I think if she was going to agree to that route the approach should have been changed earlier. But again, we shall see!)
It's funny that fandom treats it that way (funny because 1. boggling and 2. not funny at all) because A's hesitance isn't sexual at all. It's emotional and that STILL has nothing to do with them being demi. It feels like fandom has done less research than Sera -- when google is free. And more than that there are voices like yours explaining but fandom continues not to listen. I do think A's sexuality would have been better explored with different routes/tropes (than love at first sight/soulmates). But that's just me.
RE: Team Alpha - I haven't heard that but that tracks, and I can get why people would feel that way. I hope that when we see more of them, the depiction of them improves. I also think a lot of the hypersexualization/aggressive portrayal is more fandom. I felt they were more flirty and hyper in the text, but again I can see why people would be wary of their portrayal.
As for Sin, negl I did side-eye it. (Especially since I can't remember what the trapper who has him captured is.) And I am ready to side-eye fandom's approach to him.
I have nothing to add re: your thoughts on F Hauville. You're correct, lmao. Unfortunately.
Actually, I will say Sera's reactions might be in response to asks -- because I HAVE noticed that when she gets effusive F asks, she makes effusive and DETAILED responses. I've seen this at least twice. So, I feel she - and I've noticed with a lot of IF writers - react to what they're getting / the temperature of the fandom. More people care about A and N, then M, thus she reacts accordingly. HOWEVER, I feel it is the responsibility of the IF writer to cape for their ignored characters PARTICULARLY if they are an underepresented/ignored dynamic.
i legit cackled. roflmao. and let out a snort. RIGHT? like, what does this mean to me. And half the time they're just a white person with a tan (though I have come to learn that 'tan' skin and 'tanned' skin means different things. Apparently??? The things we learn to decode, I guess!!)ii
But you stated it very well, my dear! I very much often feel the same and I hope anyone else reading this takes this to heart.
#grapecase answers#twc meta#fandom stuff#if meta#interactive fiction#diversity#representation matters#latino always leaves me perplexed#even if you dont wanna tell me latino from WHERE (tho that'd be nice) at least tell me their race ffs#and the boggle that east asian. white. latin. and sometimes black are the only things people know in the entire wide world#were in east asian homie#long post
Review: Screwing With A Ghost ( Haunted Love #3) by Morgan Mason
Rating: 4.5đ Screwing With A Ghost is the first book I read by Morgan Mason and also the first I picked out of the Haunted Love collection.
