WWF RAW MAGAZINE: JUNE 2001
The RAW Interview
By Keith Elliot Greenberg
The Extreme Truth
Paul Heyman Pulls No Punches as he Reveals the Roots of “Hardcore”
(Part One)
Not long ago, World Wrestling Federation fans were astonished to turn on Raw Is War, and see none other than Paul Heyman sitting in the commentator’s chair. Since 1993, Heyman–also known as Paul E. Dangerously–had been the brains behind Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), an organization known for outrageous storylines and thrilling action. Through the years, some of the most gifted performers in the business–among them, Mick “Mankind” foley, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Chris Benoit, Tazz and the Dudleyz–got their seasoning in ECW, and many believe that the renegade group helped inspire the World Wrestling Federation’s edgy age of “Attitude.”
For much of the last year, Heyman struggled to keep his promotion alive, sometimes with the help of World Wrestling Federation-provided talent on his shows. But in early 2001, he realized he’d fought as hard as he could. When Jerry “The King” Lawler walked away from the World Wrestling Federation, Heyman found himself calling matches of the Federation, alongside Jim “J.R.” Ross.
RAW Magazine: Tell me about when you discovered that you’d be replacing Jerry Lawler on Raw Is War.
Paul Heyman: Actually, I thought it was a rib on me when they asked me to do it. I had no desire to be on camera. I get a much bigger thrill being behind the scenes. And I think the fact that I kept myself off camera so much in my own promotion is a testament to the fact that I truly don’t want to be an on-air personality. I was negotiating with the World Wrestling Federation when the company released Stacy Carter (The Kat), and her husband Jerry Lawler walked out on her behalf. When they told me they wanted me to sit in the commentator’s chair, I didn’t believe it. I haven’t been a commentator since October 1991, when I was in World Championship Wrestling (WCW). And I just couldn’t imagine why anyone would want to put a fat, bald, 35-year-old Jew on the air. It didn’t make sense to me… until 8:57 p.m., when they sent me out to the ring.
[“When the decision was made to take all wrestling stuff off Turner Broadcasting, I knew that, despite our efforts, the death knell was sounding for ECW. The fight was over. It was time to call it a day, and join the World Wrestling Federation.”]
RAW: In the weeks leading to your appearance on Raw, there were rumors about your last-ditch efforts to save ECW. How did you finally decide that it was time to come to the World Wrestling Federation?
Heyman: I’ve been a longtime acquaintance of the McMahon family. It’s kind of like in the movie Almost Famous. I B.S.’ed my way into the back of Madison Square Garden right after my 14th birthday. When ECW ran into bad times, there was so much support from the World Wrestling Federation, offers of advice, talent and promotion from the very top of the organization all the way down to just people volunteering production services on their off-hours. It was a no-brainer for me. WCW was never even a consideration because, quite honestly, they were structured to fail. Had WCW been taken off the Turner networks, we hoped we might be able to replace them. But when the decision was made to take all wrestling off Turner Broadcasting, I knew that, despite our efforts, the death knell was sounding on ECW. The fight was over. It was time to call it a day, and join the World Wrestling Federation.
RAW: Just as, in the 1950s, when Antonio Rocca popularized the flying head scissors and Gorgeous George opened the door to gimmick performers, many fans believe that in the 1990s, the ECW attitude influenced the World Wrestling Federation attitude. Do you concur with that?
Heyman: I would say that it was smart business on everybody’s part to be influenced by us, and study what we were doing right and incorporate it into their own product. We had something very, very special, and it was working. It was creating a situation where we had the most rabidly loyal fan base that many in this industry ever saw. We didn’t have the media exposure to market and promote our product the way the other guys did. So, to me, they were smart to beat us to the punch and bring it to a wider audience. If not, it would have enabled ECW a better wing at the ball in capturing any percentage of market share.
RAW: Back in 1994, there were people in the World Wrestling Federation who look at the ECW product, and said, “That stuff’s too hardcore. That may work in a bingo hall in Philadelphia, but on a national level no one’s gonna buy it.” I’m sure you heard those comments. So what compelled you to keep pushing the envelope without fear that it was going to explode in your face?
Heyman: We listened to the audience, and the audience was digging it. So we just kept on pushing it because they wanted us to.
RAW: How did you end up in the dressing room at 14 years old?
Heyman: When I was 13 years old, I’d go to Madison Square Garden with my zoom lens, take pictures of the matches, and then trade those photos with people all over the country. It was an expensive hobby because I had to reproduce so many pictures. So I started putting together a newsletter with everyone’s photos and match results. I was having a blast, the time of my life, and I wanted to get some interviews. I was tired of taking zoom-lens pictures with the ropes in the way. I wanted to go backstage and take photos of the wrestlers there. Now, I might have had pimples and braces, but I also had a deep voice. And I B.S.’ed my way on the telephone, and finally got a hold of Vince McMahon, Sr. [father of current owner Vince McMahon]. He arranged for me to get a press pass for Madison Square Garden. I just acted like I belonged, and I guess they believed that I did. I gave a picture of Andre the Giant that I had taken to Vince, Sr., and he gave me $50 for it. And every month after that, I showed up with my press pass and got in. I ended up getting to know everybody, and just became part of the scene.
RAW: Did you always believe in your heart that you’d be in the World Wrestling Federation at some point?
Heyman: I never really thought about it. I’ve never taken the time to sit down and wonder what comes next. I see TV executives do that all the time, and I hate their guts for it because they’ll make decisions that are based on future political ramifications instead of what’s right for their organizations. I just wanted to put 100 percent into whatever I did. So I never really thought that I would end up here. It’s been close several times through my career. But for one reason or another, I always ended up doing something else. I have a different perspective coming here at age 35 than I would have had if I came here when I was 24. I’m glad I had a chance to grow up outside the structure of the WWF because it enables me, at 35, to bring an old man’s experience but a young man’s enthusiasm to the table.
RAW: When did you make the transition from being a photographer to being a participant?
Heyman: I was editing one of the wrestling magazines in 1985 and 1986. And I also was doing work at [New York nightclub] Studio 54, doing publicity, promotions and producing shows–kind of like ECW. IN April 1986, Studio closed due to insurance problems. Suddenly I found myself out of work, so I began working on independent wrestling shows in the Northeast. In January 1987, I started working at the old wrestling territory in Florida. From there, I went to Memphis. And from there I went to the [now-defunct] American Wrestling Alliance (AWA). Everything just took off like a rocket for me.
RAW: It’s one thing to take pictures at ringside, it’s another thing to take bumps in the ring. How did you learn to make that change?
Heyman: I didn’t learn how to do it at all. I loved performing. It was a fantasy come true. And I just went out there and did it with no formal training, figuring things out along the way–like a real schmuck.
RAW: It’s no secret that, back in the days of the regional wrestling territories, some promoters didn’t treat the fans like they were intelligent. Did you learn from their mistakes?
Heyman: ECW was a very fan-friendly promotion. We believed in talking to and with our audience instead of at them and thinking that we were above them. I didn’t buy into the mentality some other promoters had.
RAW: In Memphis in 1987, you were involved in a very famous altercation with the man you replaced in the World Wrestling Federation, Jerry Lawler.
Heyman: It was the first time Lawler lost a hair match. I was Austin Idol’s manager and, in the middle of his match with Lawler, Tommy Rich–who had been hiding under the ring all day–came out and gave Lawler a piledriver after the referee got knocked on his ass. And Idol pinned Lawler. Then, they let me into the cage, and we proceeded to shave the head of the hometown hero, Jerry “the King” Lawler.
RAW: And the fans really seemed ready to riot?
Heyman: They did. It took us 45 minutes to get out of the cage. The cops couldn’t get to us, and we couldn't get out of the cage. People were literally climbing the cage to get in. And Tommy Rich was swinging a chair to bat them down. I was just 21 years old and stupid–I thought it was the greatest thing in the world. Meanwhile, I’m starting to realize, “Hey, why are the cops standing all the way back there? And why haven't they gotten to the ring yet?” And I realized it was because they couldn’t get to us. I was too excited to be scared.
RAW: And it was Tommy Rich who helped get you into the AWA?
Heyman: Yeah, he got a job there and mentioned that there was this young guy he knew who no one had seen on a national level. The AWA was on [TV] daily on ESPN at the time. The Gagnes [AWA owners Verne and Greg Gagne] were hesitant to use me because I'd been a photographer.
RAW: Why was that a problem? Did they think that you weren’t a professional manager?
Heyman: I really can’t identify the mindset, simply because I’m happy to state that in my life, I don’t think that I’ve ever been that stupid.
So I said to them, “Here’s what I'll do” I’ll buy a ticket to the TV tapings on my own. And if you like my shtick, give me back the plane ticket money and tell me that I have a job. If you don’t, I'll pack my bags and leave; the ticket’s on me and thank you for the opportunity.”
[“We brought in Sabu, then Tazz, and then Tommy Dreamer… (ECW) just gave the people a quality show, and it caught on. We could see the movement gaining momentum, and I decided to stick with it.”]
RAW: So you go out there, and you get heat?
Heyman: Yeah, kinda.
RAW: So did the Gagnes say, “Fine, you can stay”?
Heyman: Yeah, I walked to the dressing room, was handed my plane ticket money and told, “You got a job.”
RAW: Then you got national exposure?
Heyman: Yes.
RAW: And that led to you appearing in ECW?
Heyman: Right, I left Verne [Gagne] right before New Year’s Eve in ‘87, and spent the next 10 months working a little bit for Jerry Blackwell’s promotion in Georgia. Then I was Eddie Gilbert’s assistant booker in Alabama, while i was booking a new promotion out of Chicago called Windy City Wrestling. In WCW, Tully [Blanchard] and Arn [Anderson] had just left for the World Wrestling Federation, and the new Midnight Express [Bobby Eaton and Stan Lane] needed someone new to work with. So I came in with the Original Midnight Express [Dennis Condrey and Randy Rose, who’d previously used the name} for a Midnight vs. Midnight feud. And we started there the day that Ted Turner took over the company.
RAW: But what was significant about that was that fans weren’t sure if this was a storyline or the real thing. The announcers had said, “These guys [Condrey and Rose] don’t even work for WCW.”
Heyman: Very much. It was a lot like the things we did in ECW. Fans weren’t sure where the story ended and reality began.
RAW: Let’s hear about the roots of ECW.
Heyman: In 1993, my old friend Eddie Gilbert was living in Philadelphia, putting together Eastern Championship Wrestling with Tod Gordon. Eddie asked me to come down a few days a month and help him produce promos and teach some guys different interview skills and stuff like that. I always loved to work with talent.  When Eddie and Tod had a falling out, Tod was left in a bad jam. And he asked me as a favor to help him. I came in and took over the creative end on September 18, 1993. And he asked me if I would do it a little longer while he got his legs underneath him. And I started producing characters like the Public Enemy. We brought in Sabu, then Taz, and then Tommy Dreamer. And we gave a young announcer named Joey Styles his first exposure and turned Shane Douglas into “The Franchise.” We just gave the people a quality show, and it caught on. We could just see the movement gaining momentum, and I decided to stick with it.
RAW: How did Eastern Championship Wrestling become Extreme Championship Wrestling?
Heyman: Even after the NWA (National Wrestling Alliance) ended its close association with WCW, the NWA continued to exist. It was mainly a group of small promoters around the country. And there were some members of the board of the NWA who kept trying to stop ECW’s progress. So the decision was made in 1994 to promote the next NWA world heavyweight championship tournament at the ECW Arena [in Philadelphia]. And the decision was made that Shane Douglas would get the belt. At that time, we made the decision that the NWA was truly a dead organization, and this was our chance to do something that we’d never done. We would declare the past dead and say, “This Is a whole new beginning. We’re gonna break all the conventions and trash all the rules. And look out world, here we come.” We took the risk of alienating ourselves from the rest of the wrestling industry, which we did.
Shane beat Too Cold Scorpio in the final. And then he threw down the NWA title in the ring. He didn’t throw it into a garbage can, as many people later claimed. And [NWA president] Dennis Coralluzzo came in the back and asked what was going on. We said Shane was the champion, whether he wanted him to be champion or not.
When out TV show aired, he was introduced as our new ECW champion. But we weren’t Eastern Championship Wrestling anymore, and we weren’t the NWA. We were Extreme Championship Wrestling. And the way the business would be propelled into the future would now be labeled “extreme.”

*The Best of the Bestest!: The Rap Pundit’s Picks For The Finest Rap Projects of 2022
*Just a list of MY favorite favorites from a year filled with a lot of damn good music.
Tumblr media
What else needs to be said at this point?  You have probably seen at least a dozen “Best of” lists by now, with many of the same albums cluttered near the top....but this is THE Rap Pundit’s list, so you know you’re bound to find more gems than chalk.
In a historically deep year for rap music (a topic worth profiling in the future), the headline story was probably the numerous side stories.  Be it the explosion of great music coming from areas that had a previously under-reported wealth of talent (especially Wisconsin and Florida), the underground scene getting more high profile exposure than it has in years (artists like billy woods, Fatboi Sharif and Lungs/Lonesword being shouted-out by numerous mainstream outlets!?), sample-driven drill officially becoming the preferred drill-flavor (at least on the east coast, shout-out Shawny Binladen, Four50, Big YaYa and the YTB), and of course the simply inescapable rise of club music’s influence on rap right now (Bandmanrill is clearly the master of this lane, but this style isn’t going away anytime soon)….if you couldn’t find something you loved in 2022, you might not actually like rap music.

12. Languish Arts and Woeful Studies by Ka
11. Spirit Roaming by AKAI SOLO
Aaaaaaaaand now, my top ten...
10.  I Told Bessie by ELUCID
[A well-oiled machine of an album, I Told Bessie lurches along from one ear-grabbing soundscape to another, each gifted contributor putting their stamp on some precious reflection from ELUCID (all producers were in top form here, but Child Actor, Messiah Musik and Sebb were especially potent).  As one half of Armand Hammer, ELUCID has no trouble being a tour guide through his own stroll down memory lane.  He is a superior narrator that knows his way around a vast array of different styles of instrumentals, which means that Bessie never gets too dark or too bright, adding easy replay value to even the heavier moments of the album.]
9. Component System with the Auto Reverse by Open Mike Eagle
[Open Mike Eagle has circled around the epicenter of the underground rap scene for some time now, always a worthy contributor, albeit not one to necessarily be recognized during award season. That should change with his latest effort, a brilliant piece of nostalgia, personal reflection, and an earnest love for hip-hop.  Also, great writing aside, the beats on here are simply phenomenal.]
8. SICK! by Earl Sweatshirt
[Forgot that this dropped in 2022?  The first AOTY contender to drop is all too often the album ending up with the short end of the stick come December, and that seems to be the case with SICK!.  Less sonically aggressive than much of his previous work, Earl still manages to cram so much thoughtful writing into quick, fun-size doses.  The most effective music isn’t always the music that begs for our attention, and this feels like an album where the listener is fortunate just to catch Earl’s thoughts before they float away, to make room for more poignant passing thoughts.  Perhaps Earl’s best gift as an artist is his ability to leave fans wanting more.]
7. Bokleen World by Mike Shabb
[By now the buzz is just starting to nip at Mike Shabb's heels. The Montreal MC/producer was not on my radar before this year, but hot damn has he made an impact in 2022.  If it wasn’t his TWO great solo albums that he dropped, it was the acclaim from tastemakers like Westside Gunn, who got his production skills the attention they deserve.  More importantly, Shabb is coming out of Montreal, Canada, making him a representative of a scene that is starting to make waves well outside of the Canadian border.  I loved his release from earlier this year, but for me it was Bokleen World that showcased all of the many dimensions of an exciting young artist.]
6.  MOOR CHORES by Lord Kayso
[Another artist that I was completely unfamiliar with at this time last year, Brooklyn’s Lord Kayso is closing out this year as one of my favorite artists.  There’s something about his delivery and the way that he colors in his world that feels simultaneously intimate but distant, much like how a young Nas was portrayed as a writer’s-writer, watching events in his community unfold from a project window.  Kayso reflects on his world with a casual delivery that doesn’t seem to be emotionally affected in the moment, but the fact that he’s sharing these personal stories at all confirms that he’s a man with a great deal on his mind.]
5. For All Debts Public and Private by Defcee & Boathouse
[Last year Defcee & Messiah Musik really surprised some folks (myself included) by dropping Trapdoor, one of the best albums of 2021, in December...so let that be a lesson to anyone that thinks they can finalize their annual Best Of lists by the time Thanksgiving wraps up.  That's a tough act to follow, but Defcee & Boathouse managed to strike in 2022 with another fantastic project in For All Debts Public and Private. An impressive list of some of the underground's finest join forces with Boathouses impactful backdrops and Defcee's revealing bars, all to create an album that is as thoughtful as it is prone to high levels of replay value.  When it comes to dissecting one's life and perspectives, I don't know if any MC's pen is touching Defcee at the moment.]
4. Deathfame by Quelle Chris
[Detroit's uber-talented virtuoso Quelle Chris has been accumulating one of the deepest catalogues in music for some time now, but Deathfame is truly one of his finest works top to bottom. An under-reported trend for Quelle is that he somehow finds a way to become more and more versatile as a producer with every album.  Never allowing his sense of humor to drown out his messages, and never being so devoid of humor that his messages come off as bitter, a great Quelle Chris album has become a most welcome tradition over these past few years....and I hope it continues!]
3.  Aethiopes by billy woods & Preservation
[Gonna keep it moving here…billy woods is just flat out the most prolific writer in rap music right now, Preservation is a genius and their chemistry is off the charts.  Add a handful of standout guest verses - EL-P, Boldy, Breeze and hot damn, Despot!? - and you have an AOTY worthy album.  Too many memorable quotes and verse of the year contenders to list, but for some reason there’s a special place in my heart for “trying to pay rent - but that’s not black empowerment, that’s you trying to pay rent”.]
2. 10 (a.k.a. HWH10) by Westside Gunn
[Maybe my favorite Westside Gunn project since FLYGOD, which for me (as a bit of a Griselda stan since 2015), is saying a lot.  Reminiscent of Kanye’s “anyone around, come to the studio right now!” energy during better times - his MBDTF G.O.O.D. Friday roll out - for the latest (last??) installment of his controversially titled music series, Gunn managed to pull together a somewhat surprising list of features for a mixtape of loose and FUN bar-fests over the most varied, ear-grabbing production that we have heard from the Griselda collective in a minute.  I’m not actually sure who was in the studio and who wasn’t, but when the outcome puts Run The Jewels, A$AP Rocky, Doe Boy, Black Star, Busta and Rae & Ghost together on the same project, you get a straight-up dope tape that reminds me of why I fell in love with underground rap music in the first place.  Classic Soundbombing vibes, for me.]
1.  Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers by Kendrick Lamar
[When it comes down to releasing new albums, no other rap artist needs to check as many boxes as Kendrick Lamar.  JAY-Z, J.Coke, Drake, you name it - none of them have to incorporate mainstream bangers, nuanced “conscious rap”, alternative choices, catchy lyrics, superior production, clear expression of ideas, and manage to touch the bar set by fans with incredibly high expectations for an artist that doesn’t release new music as often as his peers…but such is the life of anyone who is considered to have the highest ceiling in their field.  Yet with Mr. Morale, Kendrick unleashed the album that *he* wanted to release: a sprawling conversation piece that stumbles through dozens of sticky topics without digging his heels into any one stance for too long.
It’s the perfect expression of ideas from anyone that came out of the last few years of isolation with a creeping sense of doubt, mistrust for the information circling around him, and a general awkwardness for how to interact with the world once again.  I’m not sorry that many of the thoughts he shared on this album weren’t met as “correct” based on our expectations of what many of us want him to represent, but more importantly, Kendrick shouldn’t be sorry either.  Much like other prominent people of influence in the world today, we should be discussing the nuance of everything we’re told, and the great points often come from those exchanges - way moreso than the regurgitation of curated policy that is deemed acceptable by the loudest of audiences.  So yes, I believe Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers to be hands-down the best rap album of 2022.  All messages aside, how anyone could miss the well-crafted delivery and high quality production that is easily the most engaging of any mainstream rap album in 2022, is still pretty surprising to me….but I suppose conflicted opinions are exactly what should come from a talented artist stewing in his own conflicted opinions in recent years.   Oh well, I guess even the best in their field can’t please everybody.]
Next stop....best songs. 👀

iHeartPodcast Award Nominees Announced: Indie Podcasts Mostly Ignored
Tumblr media
iHeartMedia has announced the nominees for the 2024 iHeartPodcast Awards presented by The Hartford live at SXSW. The awards, which claim to honor the very best in podcasting from 2023 and celebrate the most innovative talent and content creators in the industry, will feature 29 categories spanning podcast genres.
Independent podcasters -- the backbone of podcasting -- are again underrepresented in the award process. Most of the nominees are TV personalities.
In the United Kingdom on October 31, 2023, the first-ever Independent Podcast Award ceremony was held in London.
The Independent Podcast Awards were set up by whynow Media and the Verbal Diorama podcast team to help uncover the talent that they have in the UK, but that doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves.
The awards, which were also sponsored by companies including Captivate, Adelicious and Pirate, were launched last year to celebrate the independent podcasting sector.
Perhaps, a similar event will take shape in the U.S.
This year, iHeartMedia teamed up with South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference and Festivals to host the live and in-person ceremony in Austin, Texas at the Fairmont Hotel on Monday, March 11 at 8 p.m. CT.
“As the podcast industry continues to rapidly grow, this past year has clearly proven that podcasters are always innovating in the audio space and finding new ways to reach and engage new audiences,” said Conal Byrne, CEO of iHeartMedia’s Digital Audio Group. “The nominees for the 2024 iHeartPodcast Awards reflect the results of honing that creativity, and we’re thrilled to celebrate and once again empower these creators and elevate the podcast industry together live in person at SXSW.”
No word from Mr. Byrne about independent podcasters.
Each year, podcast fans help decide the winner of the Podcast of the Year by voting online at iHeartPodcastAwards.com from February 5 through February 18.
Last year, the virtual 2023 iHeartPodcast Awards were hosted by actor and comedian Brian Baumgartner, and featured a variety of appearances by celebrities who mostly found fame and success on TV.
Maybe this year, the award ceremony will include people who are born and bred in podcasting.

I think it's sad that iHeart has not carved out award categories for independent podcasters like The Life Shift, Multispective, The Nightingale Of Iran, Murder Sheet, Double Take, Infernal Communication, EarBuds Podcast Collective, and many other deserving indie podcasts and podcasters.
For more information about the 2024 iHeartPodcast Awards, click HERE. If you do click, ask iHeart why indie podcasts do not have a more prominent role in these awards. After all, iHeart didn't invent podcasting or participate in its growth in the early, formative years. Independent podcasters did that.

When student, William Smith, at Pai Zhuq academy, unleashes Dai-Shi once more, master Casey has no choice but to send 3 of his students- Kiara Wilson, Sydney Miles and Gabriel Johnson- to his former master, R.J James, to be trained as the next power rangers in order to defeat the old threat. But with the stakes rising, can the new power rangers do it? Or will the old threat win for the first time in centuries? Quotev Link

COBERTURAS

High-Tech Tires, From Pit Lane to Your Garage
Add one more to the list of “smart” things we’ve come to know in recent years: the smart tire.
For the longest time — more than a century — tires were just rubber doughnuts. In later years, tires got an edge, called a bead, that held it to the wheel’s rim. But conventional tires are not without their flaws. With little if any warning to the driver, tires puncture, rip, skid on water and ice, lose pressure or abruptly go flat in the left lane on the George Washington Bridge. At rush hour. They are anything but smart.
Enter the Pirelli Cyber Tire, a high-tech component stuffed with advanced sensors that can radio information and warnings to an electronic receptor in an automobile’s cockpit. If the car is slipping in a puddle, the tire knows. If traction is being lost, the tire knows. The information can warn the driver to make corrections, or, in some cases, “tell” the car’s control unit to adjust engine speed, traction control or other settings.
The devices are capable of “talking” to a 5G wireless network, allowing them to communicate with drivers in other receiver-equipped vehicles or, for example, a wireless infrastructure at a racetrack.
And if there’s no driver in the car?
“Our system would add the ‘touching’ dimension to the visual in autonomous driving,” said Corrado Rocca, head of research and development for Pirelli’s smart tire project. “For example, you can imagine that an auto is receiving information from the road about how to avoid an obstacle or pedestrian, telling it, ‘Slow down.’ It will complement the visual data from cameras — from lidar, sonar, radar. It is the next step.”
The implanted sensor, as Mr. Rocca describes it, is shaped like a small sombrero, about the size of a quarter, and contains a processor, a radio and communications electronics. Using sophisticated software, it relays data to the car’s engine control unit, also known as an engine control module. Pirelli is planning to offer performance-car owners in the United States an aftermarket cockpit-mounted device that, paired with sensors in the company’s high-end Trofeo tires, can communicate information about tire condition, lap timing and track positioning.
“We are also talking with a number of car manufacturers about integrating the systems, but it’s a lengthy process, three to five years,” Mr. Rocca said. “It’s not only adding our technology, but integrating it with all the software” in place in the cars.
Pirelli recently tested an Audi fitted with the Cyber Tires. Mr. Rocca said it was able to transmit information through a 5G network to another car about wet road conditions.
At the moment, plans for the Cyber Tire in racing environments are vague, although it would seem that Formula One cars would be the ideal test bed. For the next three years, Pirelli is the sole supplier of tires for all Formula One teams under a contract with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, Formula One’s governing body. Such an arrangement is not unusual: Michelin supplies tires for all teams in the Formula E electric-car racing series, and the company is working with a tire sensor for those cars that monitors air pressure.
“There are stringent rules in Formula One, rules of the game that are outside our scope today,” Mr. Rocca said. “We are not focused on that now. But in the future …” He let the sentence hang.
Pirelli is pursuing other advancements in tire development for mainstream vehicles, including issues of materials, weight and road noise, and thermal behavior. One instance of racing tech migrating to road use is the simple bead that fixes the rubber to the rim.
“There are huge stresses on the rim and the tire in Formula One,” said Mario Isola, who heads Pirelli’s racing program.
While skeptics argue that the concept of technology transfer is just a marketing ploy, carmakers like Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz have long emphasized the relationship between the pits and the showroom. Some examples include:
Disc brakes. Braking is crucial, and it was Jaguar in the 1950s that “borrowed” an invention from the aircraft industry. If disc brakes, which were less likely to fade or overheat, could stop a landing plane, imagine what they could do for a speeding car. A Jaguar C-Type with disc brakes won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1953. Most series production road cars in 2020 have discs instead of drum brakes, at least in the front.
Antilock brakes. These were also adapted from aviation use and showed up in Formula One cars in the early ’60s. They became common in road cars years later.
KERS. The kinetic energy recovery system might be the ultimate example of racing’s stop and go. It was introduced for the Formula One 2009 season. With KERS, kinetic energy (that energy used to brake) is stored in a battery and then reused to give a boost of power to an engine. Ferrari has shown the system in a concept road car, but the cost will have to drop significantly before it becomes a mainstream product.
Turbocharging. Turbos took off in racing thanks in part to Renault, which used compressor-driving power in Formula One in the ’70s. Turbochargers give smaller engines higher performance, allowing carmakers to reduce engine cylinder size and increase fuel efficiencies.
Carbon fiber. The use of this material, now found in mainstream products from BMW, Ferrari and others, was spurred by its adoption in Formula One and aerospace. The substance — first used by Thomas Edison — is much stronger than aluminum, and lighter. Some carmakers, like Cadillac, use it for decorative trim, but its real value is saving weight and adding strength to a vehicle’s hood, roof and other exterior bits.
At the end of the day, winning a race is one thing; putting that technology to work in road cars — and selling lots of those cars — is quite another.
“I can tell you that companies like Mercedes, Renault, they’re not in Formula One just because they love the sport,” said Mario Andretti, who stopped to chat while walking the pit lane at the recent Formula One race in Austin, Texas. Mr. Andretti won the 1978 Formula One World Championship, as well as four IndyCar titles, including the Indianapolis 500.
“A lot of development goes on here, because of the vigorous testing being done,” Mr. Andretti added. “And there’s a sense of urgency to all of this work. Formula One is at the leading edge of technology, that’s its DNA, and that’s why the manufacturers spend the money that they do to be involved.”
