Authors note: hang on? Didn’t one of your mutuals recently do a 2 part Amazon pregnancy series? Well yes, and we have both had a laugh about it but there are major differences to mine and @cariantha ‘s And not just me doing a 16 part series either. I won’t spoil the next few chapters but enjoy my take.
🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
A new normal settled over Edenbrook. Casey and her friends commenced the final 2 months of their residency. None of the gang missed Landry and Casey did breathe a sigh of relief when she heard he had transferred residencies. No one in the gang bothered to find out where. Aurora moved into the roomie residence. It was a shock to Aurora, being seen as herself, not a way to her aunt but Aurora was enjoying the genuine friendship that was offered. She too decided to make a change. She decided to transfer to Mass Kenmore. She felt that she would be in a better position to carve her own path in her career. She knew that the staff there would also know her aunt but at the end of the day her aunt was not there.
There were still a band of detractors that Casey had to deal with post Ethics hearing. Those who presumed that she slept her way onto the team decided to assume that Dr Ramsey had asked for her to be on the team. This rumor made its way to Naveen and he was mortified. That decision was his own. How could he not reward the young woman who saved his life. He did compile an affidavit stating that he was not influenced by any other doctor in the decision. He was appalled that he felt he needed to do this but no one deserved to be on the end of such malicious gossip.
Work was busy and everyone was feeling it. About three weeks after Dr Ramsey left Casey started to feel more tired than usual. She had put it down to work, it had been hectic as well as doing extra study on the side, getting acquainted with some of the more exotic and more rare diseases. But she could not shake the feeling something more was up. She had worked exceedingly long hours before, particularly when she was helping with Naveen, she never recalled feeling this tired but she put it down to the emotional come down after the trial and the ending of the arrangement with Dr Ramsey. She could not deny she was missing him. Not personally but at work also, and not just him yelling at interns either. She knew it was going to be difficult to go back to a pre Miami footing. She knew that the mission was going well and that he was working hard but the limited contact was still hard. She hoped that they could maintain a friendship with him upon his return but she knew that was also fraught. Somewhere along the way she fell for him.
Meanwhile down in Brazil, Ethan too was a mess. The work was hard and equally rewarding. The days were long which he was thankful for, as well as the relaxing commute via motorbike along the Amazon but the nights were hard. After a week he knew that going back to a pre Miami setting was going to be futile. Instead of time apart helping them grow apart it helped him realize just how far he has fallen. He did not think it was love just yet, but he felt that he was well on the road there. He had trusted her with Naveen, which was a big deal to him, he did not trust easily. Then his thoughts went to the work dynamics. He knew June would have the most troublesome. She was a good behavioural psychologist and that did give some great insight sure but it was her mind games he knew she liked to engage in mind games and she would most likely call into question any merit, especially if there were changes to reporting. There was also the lack of guarantee that Casey still reciprocated his feelings. He decided that he needed to speak to Casey upon his return. He still thought of work arounds, as if she did feel the same way then he wanted options on the table of how it could work.
Six weeks and a half weeks after Ethan left Casey was more tired than usual and she was concerned. She had never being this tired and now she was starting to feel nauseous. Then she looked at an app on her phone.
Fuck” she said, “this can not be happening”
She was late and for someone who had never being late this was a shock. She sat there in a daze then Aurora and Sienna walked in. They were shocked.
“What is wrong Casey?” Asked Sienna
“Yeah, what is wrong, you look shook.” Said Aurora then Sienna saw the phone screen.
“What…”
“I had been tired a lot lately but I put it down to work, despite having worked similar hours before.”
“Have you tested?” Asked Aurora.
“No, I am scared.”
“I would be too, I have to ask..”
“It is Ethan’s yes.” Interjected Casey.
Do we have a test here?” Asked Aurora.
“No.” Said Casey.
“Ok, I will go to the chemist, grab a test. Sienna, get started on some baked goods and when I come back we will be emotional support while you take the test.”
The girls went about their tasks while Casey had a drink of water and tried to remain calm. Aurora came back with the test and Casey went to the bathroom. She peed on the stick and set the timer on her phone. The time seemed to go agonizingly slow. The timer went off and she took the test out with her.
“So…?” Asked Sienna.
Casey took a deep breath and looked at the test.
It was positive and Casey let out a sob before muttering “this can not be happening?”
She looked again and the result was still the same.
Aurora and Sienna let Casey cry as they hugged her. Casey had being ambivalent about kids in the past but now she was here pregnant to a man that she fell for, who ended their arrangement as he was to be her boss but most importantly to a man she knew did not want kids.
“I can not keep it.”
“Why not?” Asked Aurora
“What about my residency? The fellowship? There is still a rabid camp of people who think I slept my way onto the team. A pregnancy will be hard to hide at a certain point…”
“You are not alone Casey…” said Sienna.
“He does not want kids Si, I helped him test the FMRI machine awhile ago, I asked. He does not want them. I know he does not need to be involved…”
“But nothing,” said Aurora. “It is your decision at the end of the day but what if he has changed his mind?”
“I know he hated that we had to end things. But that is no guarantee we would work, besides I would feel as though that he is staying out of obligation and I do not want that.”
Aurora and Sienna understood where Casey was coming from.
“Thank you both for being there for me, I am going to head off to bed.” Casey bids good night and goes to bed and falls into a troubled sleep.
“What do you think she will do?”
“I know him and my aunt split up because they wanted different things, and since she knows that he does not want kids I get the reluctance to keep it so I will be surprised if she does.”
Sienna nodded.
“Either way we will be there for her.”
Meanwhile Casey looked at her schedule for the coming days. She did not have a day off until right before Ethan returned. She knew that she probably should tell him but she knew contacting him would be difficult but she did not want to leave a voicemail or text. She also knew that waiting until he came home would delay the inevitable and the longer she left it the more likely that surgery was her only option. So she took the decision to not tell him and that she would use her day off to have a medically induced abortion.
The day came, she got her script. Listened to the spiel about what was normal and what was not and headed home. She took the medication as stated and went to bed.
That night Ethan arrived back and went to Donahue’s to see if he could see Casey. He was disappointed to see that she was not there, even though her friends were. He knew he would see her the next day and if he was been honest, he was exhausted so a long chat about feelings was the last thing he wanted.
Casey had a troubled sleep, she was nervous about the abortion but above all nervous about seeing Ethan and the fellowship. Deep down she knew it was right but she could not shake a feeling in her stomach.

Authors note: I know that this is a triggering topic. I had a thought that lead to this series about if MC was pregnant during the reset and she decided not to keep it and low and behold another AU series.
If this has been triggering I urge you to contact support services in your state or country. If you have questions on why I chose this path my dm’s are open. The following chapters will have some drama and some clear differences from canon. What happens in this chapter does have an impact on their relationship and that will be explored.

Lost Cause (OH, Aurora & F!MC Friendship, Harper & Aurora)
So I finally wrote a fic about the Emery doctors since I strongly doubt we will get a chance to see this in the original book. Yet I feel like a scene like this should have been part of the story, after what we learned about them over the past few chapters. Set before Ch. 16 on the eve of MC (Meredith Valentine)’s hearing and containing references to my Aurora & F!MC friendship fic, this fanfic deals with a (much needed) confrontation between Aurora and Harper.
Pretty angsty and hopefully bittersweet, as I headcanon them as close in the past: that affection isn’t gone, but things are different now when they’re both doctors at Edenbrook hospital. And a few misunderstandings cloud their minds, even though they speak from the heart out of care. It was tough to write, but I hope I stayed in character! I’d like to think that after this talk, there will be a new beginning for their relationship. Hope you like it!

_________________________
Harper was going through the papers of Dr. Valentine's hearing, sipping a coffee on her couch when her doorbell rang. It was a bit late for a friend stopping by and she wasn't expecting anyone, not the night before a hearing. She stood, groaning, hoping that it wasn't Ethan on the other side of the door. Or even worse, Declan. That creep would be perfectly capable to throw a stunt like that.
But it was none of them. When she opened the door, it was...
"Aurora?"
"Hi...Harper" her niece greeted her, shifting uncomfortably.
"Hi but what...what are you doing here? It’s late?"
"Can I come in?"
Harper looked at her for a moment, before resolving to set aside and let her in.
"I made coffee, do you want some?"
"Yes, why not? I can't sleep anyway"
They both walked to the kitchen.
"How come? What's troubling you?" she inquired, handing her a mug of black coffee.
Aurora took it and a displeased expression curled her lips. She diverted her eyes and muttered:
"As if it's hard to guess"
Harper inhaled sharply and grimaced.
"Rory, please tell me you're not here for tomorrow's hearing"
Aurora met her gaze and looked at her right in the eye, determination in her eyes.
"What if I am?"
"You perfectly know that I can't share any detail nor allow any kind of interference-"
"I know that"
"Then why you're here?" Harper sighed.
Aurora didn't divert her gaze but kept quiet for a moment, searching for the right words to articulate her thoughts.
"When I mess up or do something wrong you, Dr. Mirani, Dad or whoever else don't miss the chance to let me know that I made a mistake. Well, that's why I'm here tonight. You made a mistake. More than just one maybe"
Harper crossed her arms and stiffened. She had already had the most unpleasant phone call with Declan earlier that day, another scolding was exactly what she needed, she thought.
"Because I called the hearing?"
"Yeah, for instance"
"Believe it or not, Dr. Valentine herself asked me to call it. She came to my office, confessed to be the one who injected the unapproved serum to Mrs. Martinez and asked me to call an ethical hearing" Harper shuttered her jaw.
"What?" Aurora gaped, genuinely surprised. She was in the dark of that detail.
"She stated that she wants to stand up for what she believes it's right, to pick her battle. And she wanted a chance to defend her choice at an ethics hearing which I allowed her. But I guess it's easier to put the blame on me, right? The only one who broke the rules is Dr. Valentine, I'm just following the protocol. And for the record, since she confessed me her doing, I wasn't even-"
Aurora had stopped listening to her. She repeated the words of her aunt into her head.
"My God, she did it...she did it for real"
Harper gave her a quizzical look. Aurora met her gaze again.
"That's one more reason why Valentine must win the hearing!"
"Wait wait...it's not that easy, girl. We're not in one of those medical dramas on TV. I must admit I was impressed by her courage too but-"
"Name me one intern, an intern not even a senior doctor, who would do the same? Who has ever done the same?" Aurora challenged her.
Harper opened her mouth to say something but nothing came.
"See? Maybe not even you would have done it!"
Harper sighed.
"Rory..."
"Surely not a single one of those one brain cell interns of that stupid competition you put on!"
"That's not stupid! It-" Harper protested but she was cut short by her niece.
"Maybe it was not in your head but it's utterly stupid! None of them took it seriously. Or better too seriously! But in the wrong way! It's just like high school or worse kindergarten all over again" Aurora groaned. "People only want to win and can't care less for their actual patients. Take Olsen, number two of your ranking, for instance: the other day I heard him say to a kid complaining about pain to toughen up and stop whining cause he couldn't possibly be that much in pain. And it's not the only one I heard saying stuff like that! I got lucky that my surname is Emery but someone's heavily sabotaged Valentine since she got to the top!"
Harper immediately reminisced the pager accident and the talk she had with Dr. Valentine in her office.
"Sabotaged?"
"Yes, with the pager, stolen charts and things like that. Because she was on top!"
Harper pinched her nose.
"That's ridiculous and very serious at the same time. That's not just a petty prank, this is crossing a line and putting our patients in a bad position too. Do you have evidence?"
"No, I don't. I just know, everybody knows"
"That's no good news though. With pieces of evidence, I could have started an investigation. I don't tolerate this in my hospital, under my watch"
"Still, it's partly your doing: if you hadn't come up with that brilliant idea of yours!"
"I did what I thought was right, Rory. And I would do it twice because I believe it is the right thing. Even if there are clearly interns that are utterly immature and don't understand the huge opportunity I gave you all. Because that's what it is. But is that a reason not to do the right thing? That fellowship could be the start of a great career, it's an opportunity none of the doctors I know had when we were in your place. But I cannot hand it to any of you just like that: I must know that you have what it takes to earn it. Even if it means pushing you to the limit. I don't regret it, I'm just disappointed to hear some of the interns are so unworthy of even entering medical school as they have no maturity nor ethics"
Aurora exhaled loudly, taking a sip of her coffee.
"Whatever, it doesn't change the fact that Valentine's career is on the line now"
"Actions have consequences and she made her choice" Harper winced.
"And you made yours"
Harper's gaze hardened as she registered the implications.
"And what's this supposed to mean? What Valentine did was reckless and the charges she's gonna face are very serious!"
"And what about Teresa? Didn't you care for her? Or was that just a lie you told to yourself?"
A flash of fury crossed Harper's gaze as she slammed her own mug on the kitchen counter.
"That's enough, Aurora! Enough! What do you think you know about Teresa? About Teresa and me? You have no right to talk to me like that! So do me a favor and stop assuming things about you as most do lately, and on that note stop assuming the worst about me!"
She paused and took a deep breath to cool off. When she spoke again there was a hint of sadness in her voice.
"Is that what you really think of me?"
Aurora diverted her eyes.
"All I'm saying is...you're so obsessed with rules. I know it's a Chief job but I think that a good doctor knows when to make certain calls if you get what I mean. That's what makes them a good doctor, not just another doctor"
"And I'm clearly not a good doctor while Valentine is, that's what you're saying, right?"
Harper was now looking her right in the eye, waiting for her answer.
"From where I stand, Mrs. Martinez case is so complex and there are so many ethical implications...I don't know if it's right to charge Valentine for her doing. Yes, she broke the rules but Teresa got to live her few days outside the hospital"
"Aurora, I'm glad she got to leave the hospital at last too but that injection could have killed her, for what we know. I was about to read the result of the autopsy but I hope you understand that the scenario you're using to support your admirable defense of your partner is just one of many. The brightest one. The one you're ignoring is way darker and far less pleasant"
Aurora considered her words.
"But what if sometimes there are some risks to take? Like you have to do whatever it-"
"Whatever it takes" Harper repeated mechanically, exhaling loudly in frustration. "Did you talk to Ramsey too?"
"No, but from what I've heard at least Dr. Rams-"
"Ramsey, Ramsey, Ramsey. Always Ramsey! Hundreds of talented professionals at Edenbrook and who's everyone swooning over? Ethan! Because he's so tormented, so compassionate with patients: the knight in shining armor of Edenbrook"
Harper shook her head.
"Do you know what wondrous Ethan did? He quitted! And I've covered for him so far to avoid rumors and chaos! I tried to make him reason and come back to work but no! Drowning your sorrows in a bottle of scotch is way better than fighting back, because yes, Aurora, that's what he's doing right now! And he even stopped answering my calls, anyone's calls! So I'm asking you: is that what you call a good doctor? He is one of the best residents in the diagnostics team and yet he chose alcohol instead. He quitted without giving a damn about the consequences: who's gonna cover his role? Did he say if he's done permanently or not? No, and in the meantime, I have a hole in the diagnostics team with him and Naveen gone and one brilliant doctor less. A doctor who could have helped significantly during the E.R. emergency and every single day, if only he picked up a phone because people don't stop getting sick or hurt when we're down. Everybody hurts, everybody grieves their losses but it's not a good reason to act like that. From where I stand, this is part of the Oath too"
"I didn't know about Dr. Ramsey..." Aurora commented, lowering her gaze.
"Nobody does yet people always assume the best about him" Harper commented sharply.
A tense silence fell into the room. Aurora was the first to speak.
"I didn't mean to say you're a bad doctor. I..I just miss you being you, I guess"
"What do you mean?"
"When you weren't Chief. When you were just my aunt surgeon"
"I'm always the same, Rory"
Harper's voice imperceptibly softened as she tried to reach for her niece's hand but Aurora shook her head, grimacing.
"No, you're not. Stop lying to yourself"
Harper looked taken aback by her last statement so she continued.
"This is not you and you know it, deep inside. You're frozen, stuck...scared maybe? What were you thinking when you signed up for this position? When you were an intern like me, when you were a surgeon, you were happier. Try and tell me I'm wrong! I remember the look on your face, the light in your eyes when you were appointed Head of Neurosurgery. Your dream came true, that's what you said. Then one day you gave it away to do what? Administration. And become this Chief who enforces rules at any given occasion. But that dignified smile you have on at work is not the one I remember from back then. Was it even worth it? Being a Chief?"
Harper did her best to conceal the pang of pain she felt in her chest as her niece spoke.
"Rory, time changes things...years of experience changes your perspective..."
As she stopped, unable to find other arguments, not ready to tell the truth, Aurora sighed.
"You know what's funny? I don't think I've ever told but when I decided to apply to med school, it wasn't only because of an aptitude test. It was a tough decision but I did it because...I wanted to be like you one day"
Harper met her gaze, visibly surprised and touched.
"Maybe not a neurosurgeon but a confident, badass female doctor just like you. You were so passionate about your work. When you talked about it, it was so inspiring, nothing like mom and dad speeches. You made it sound the best thing in the world, even if it was just an ordinary appendicectomy. And when I visited you at work...gosh, you were a force of nature! And your colleagues I talked to as I waited for you to end an operation were enthusiastic about you. So when at my college admission interview they asked me who was my inspiration I said your name"
"You...you never told me"
"No. But you know what? Seeing you now, I think I would change my answer"
This time Harper diverted her eyes under the blow of Aurora's delusion.
"I understand" she whispered.
Aurora grimaced, looking at her aunt who was now giving her her shoulders pretending to wash her mug. Noticing how her last few words hurt her, she spoke again, her tone gentler this time:
"I...I saw the pile of the newest surgery journals on your desk. Aunt, you miss it. You miss practice. You should go back to it: you're a...good doctor. You can still be a good doctor."
"It's not that simple, Rory. I cannot exactly quit like Ramsey did. That's not who I am, since you mentioned it. And even if I quit, I cannot walk into-"
"No, you're right. You're so stubborn when you want. I knew it was a lost cause trying to talk with you"
Aurora placed her mug on the counter too and stood.
"Just for your information, tomorrow I'm not gonna stop by your office at the end of my shift. I'll go straight home and find answers on my own"
Harper turned. Her face looked more exhausted now.
"Okay, as you wish"
"Just like that?" Aurora asked, taken by surprise.
"Yes, you don't need me to find out the solution to your cases. You never did."
"Then why you grilled me for hours?"
"Because you're so insecure, Rory. You keep second-guessing yourself and it backfires"
"Oh and here I thought the reason why you put all that pressure on me was that you were trying to live through me the doctor life you cannot live anymore since you become an administrator"
"What?"
"Yeah, you heard me. And I hate it as much as you hate being the Chief away from the O.R."
"This is what you think?" Harper asked, wincing.
"Honestly I cannot find another logical explanation but it ends now. This is my life and I want to live it on my own terms. I'm not you, aunt. And if you're so frustrated by how you miss practice, go back to it and don't take it over me"
Harper frowned, hugging herself.
"I wasn't trying to take it over you and I'm not...frustrated, as you said. I was just trying to mentor you. Pushing you to excel because I know you can excel, you have it in you. But I didn't mean to hurt you and make you feel like that. I'm sorry I did, truly sorry and I won't do it again" she sighed before recollecting herself. "But you’re right. It's your life and you get to live it on your own terms. Just know that it works for me too. And this is the life I choose now"
"But you're not happy" Aurora noted.
"I appreciate your concern but I'm good with it" Harper said, closing off again.
Aurora gave her a long look then frowned.
"It's a lost cause, right? This conversation is a lost cause, isn't it?"
"I'm afraid so" Harper confirmed, pressing her lips together.
The young Emery nodded and without looking back to her aunt, moved towards the door. She stopped right in front of it and sighed.
"I took the subway train with Valentine, after the E.R. emergency. That night she was the only person who treated me kindly. And you know what she said about the competition? That she doesn't care if she wins or not, cause that was never the point. She said that she wanted to believe you would make the right call. That she trusted you to choose the intern who would best benefit the hospital and the patients. If it wasn't her, it's okay, she said. Then she added: I share this with you because I know you think that way too. And she was right"
Aurora sighed.
"I don't want to interfere. I'm talking as Rory, not Dr. Emery junior when I say...I do really hope Dr. Valentine wins the fellowship. She's the best partner and the best intern, both on a personal and professional level. If she loses her license tomorrow, well then this competition is a total farçe and I'm not sure I would keep playing along. It would be such a loss for Edenbrook and medicine in general"
"Rory..."
"See you tomorrow, Harper" Aurora sighed before opening the door and disappearing out of view.

No one could stop talking about him since day one. He was dreamy: kind, smart, attractive, incredibly sweet, and as if none of the above were enough, he was doing his residency in pediatrics. Almost every person that felt attracted to him would swoon every time they had to interact with him.
The gang used to tease Bryce that James Woods was his most strong contender in Edenbrook Hospital. The surgical resident would snort right away and say it was impossible that the personification of Prince Charming could compare to him when he was the whole damn Disney package with a triple dose of hotness.
Rosalía didn’t give a damn about him, honestly. It wasn’t her type, and that was surprising considering she had had a little crush (and a fling) on Rafael in the past. She was one of the few that wouldn’t sigh every time she had a glimpse of him. Aurora was among that selected group.
That's why it was extremely strange when Rosalía found her talking to James at the cafeteria one morning. It didn't look like it was a work-related thing, a consultation or anything, it was more personal, as Aurora couldn't stop smiling at whatever James was saying.
Something itched inside her, but she couldn't quite tell what it was. Maybe it was her protective instinct because she didn't want to see her get hurt? Or it was just jealousy because she was making new friends? Both options were completely irrational and overreacting, so she tried to shake the feeling off by buying the damn coffee and keeping with her morning as usual.
Later that week, Rosalia approached the boot at Donahue's where her friends had gathered after work and found Sienna and Aurora in an apparent little discussion.
“But why not?” Sienna asked in her usual cheery convincing tone.
“I don’t know, Si, it’s just I’m not sure if something good can come out of this.”
“What if it does? You'll never know if you don't try!"
“It’s just… I haven’t gone on a date for… years," Aurora confessed, looking down at her jar of beer. "After most of the people only wanted to date me for my Aunt, and people outside Med School simply didn’t click with me, I just stopped.”
“This is your chance! You don’t think he’s inviting you for you Aunt, right?”
“No, I don’t think so, he had never mentioned her.”
“What are you girls up to?” Rosalia asked, after witnessing the exchange in silence, knowing perfectly well what was that about.
“Rosie! Please, I need some back up here.”
“What’s the deal?”
“Woods from Pediatrics invited Aurora out,” Sienna said, leaning towards Rosie in an almost confidential tone. More like a gossipy one.
“Woods… James Woods?”
“Yeah, she invited her to try this new Chinese restaurant in Bay Village.”
That strange and uncomfortable itch resurged again. But why? It was just a date. A friend going on a date.
"How did this happen? I didn't know you were close to him, she lied, feigning she hadn't seen Aurora a few days ago in the cafeteria with him.
“We are. I mean, not close close,” she rectified, with an almost unnoticeable shake in her voice. “We just chat sometimes, usually at the cafeteria, and every time we bump into each other at the hospital he just… talks to me, so today when he saw me he made this invitation.”
"Aurora, he totally likes you! Come on, say yes!" Sienna squealed, hitting the table repeatedly with her hand in excitement.
“When is it?”
“This Friday. "
“You should totally go, Aurora, " Rosalía said finally, but the words tasted like metal, "he seems fine, I mean, everyone is always talking wonders about him, you should feel pretty lucky he has his eyes on you. ”
“Well, I guess so,” she mumbled timidly, her cheeks profusely blushing at the implication.
"Come on, text him before you have second thoughts!" Sienna ordered, sliding Aurora's phone in front of her.
The resident in front of her simply chuckled and took her phone to type her response.
The following days were inexplicably difficult for Rosalía, between remembering the date and hearing Sienna talking about it, asking if James had done more advancement. And Rosalia couldn’t understand why it bothered her so much.
That Friday evening, Rosalía was having some rest after a strenuous shift, when a knock on the door startled.
“Rosie? Are you awake?”
"Yeah," she responded as she got up from the bed to open the door, and found Aurora on the other side with a blue dress on and a fuchsia blouse in her hand.
“I can’t decide what to wear, would you… help me, please?”
She felt as if someone had punched her in the stomach.
“Sure.”
Rosalía followed her to her bedroom down the hall, and once there, Aurora modeled the blue dress she had on, "I like this, but it's not too comfy, and I feel like it's too formal for a date."
"I agree, it's cute but totally not for Chinese dinner," Rosalía conceded, sitting on the bed, where there were a couple more clothes scattered over the mattress.
Then Aurora approached the bed and took the dress off without worrying she was sitting a few inches from her. It was actually no big deal, they probably had seen each other in underwear at least a hundred times since they started their residency, but her eyes couldn't help but glance at her, at the beautiful white laced underwear she had on, at the curves on her hips and her toned thighs. It was for a brief second, but it was enough. Just that single second made her mouth dry. She wasn't seeing her friend in that white lace underwear, she was seeing…
“How’s this?”
Rosalía looked up at her and observed her new outfit, a pair of white pants and an elegant but chic fuchsia blouse.
She was left speechless for five fine seconds.
“I think it’s too flashy, don’t you think?” she asked, with a bit of self-consciousness in her posture and gestures.
“You look beautiful, Aurora, ” she breathed, completely intoxicated with the view. She didn’t even realize what she said. The words simply went out of her mouth.
“You think so?” Aurora questioned, looking at the mirror and then giving a twirl to see how she looked from behind.
A part of her wanted to say that actually no, she didn’t look that good, because that part of her didn’t want that James Wood could see her this beautiful. But the other part wanted to tell the truth and not be selfish. She deserved to know how astonishing she looked.
Not completely aware of what she was doing, Rosalía got up from the bed and sauntered towards her and stood mere inches behind her, looking at her reflection in the mirror. She was so stunning, she had to fight with all her might to not rest her chin over Aurora's shoulder and wrap her arms around her waist. The only thing she had on her mind was the desire to feel the silkiness of her hair in her cheek, smell the floral notes of her perfume mixed with the warmth of her body, and just feel her body against hers, as simple as it sounded.
Curious about her sudden silence, Aurora turned to her to reiterate her question, but a pair of amber eyes stopped her in her tracks, as they instantly started diving deeply into her chocolate ones, without receding.
For a brief second, Aurora's gaze wandered down, right where it was her mouth, and where her lips parted as a reflex. Rosalía gulped, unable to move, to make a single move. Something inside her was pushing her towards the taller woman, but the confusion for not knowing what was happening was stronger. She stood still in place.
“This is it," Rosalía whispered, her eyes roaming her lips for a millisecond. She had to say something before she could do something she'd regret later. "It’s not flashy, it’s… perfect. It matches amazingly with your skin and your eyes look shinier."
“Thank you," Aurora murmured, not parting her eyes from Rosalia’s, until finally the latter stepped back, feeling her legs wobbling at the feeling of Aurora standing so close to her.
“What time do you meet?” Rosalía asked after clearing her throat.
“He’ll come in twenty, I’ll do my makeup now. ”
“Great.”
“Thanks again, Rosie.”
“Anytime. Good luck tonight.”
Aurora smiled at her before she came back to her room, her chest pounding fast, her mind numb, her hands shaking. What was that? What was she feeling? She couldn't understand it because she’d never felt this for… for a girl before. But how? How could this happen?
She tried to have a logical explanation to what was feeling, that maybe she was experimenting with an aspect of friendship that she had never lived before, or maybe she was just confusing this with another feeling that was not love.
But the more she tried to pull from the truth, the clearer it became.
This wasn't new, it's just now that she was able to put a name on it. Since the beginning, she'd felt some kind of attraction for her. When Aurora was harsh and ignored her, something pushed her towards her to try to get to know her, to be liked by her. She thought it was just a trait of her personality because she hated that someone didn't like her, at least not without motives, but now Rosalía was realizing it was more than that.
She was always trying to impress her, however she could, because she was brilliant. Every time she had the chance, she wanted to spend time with her, no matter what that could involve, whether it was walking four blocks to have a coffee or lunch, or just getting up earlier than usual so she could go to work in Aurora's car. The excuse she always gave to herself was that it was always good to start the day early, but actually, she just wanted to have alone time with her, just see her first thing in the morning without people around, without the busy routine.
Then that’s what it was? Love? Or was it just infatuation? Maybe nothing of the sort. Maybe she was just confused.
Rosalía couldn't sleep that night. The idea of Aurora having dinner with James, laughing, smiling, and seeing something interesting in him that made her accept a second date, and then maybe have something with him, was too much, even if she was in kind of denial with the whole situation. She didn't want to accept she had feelings for her friend, but at the same time, she hated the idea of her having dinner with James.
She tried to relax by reading a book, but the words before her were like Russian, she didn’t understand a bit.
Hours later, another knock interrupted her internal fight.
“Rosie, can I come in?”
It was Aurora.
“Yes, come in.”
Aurora opened the door and entered with her purse and jacket in one hand, and a white paper bag in the other.
“Hey,”
“Hey, how was your date?”
“It was… Good. He’s cute,” she replied as she walked toward her bed and handed her the paper bag, “I brought you this.”
Rosialía took the bag in her hands, surprised. As she opened it, she found half a dozen spring rolls with soja sauce on a small plastic recipient inside.
“I know you like them.”
Her mind numbed again. Her core felt that buzzing and warm sensation that was pushing her to kiss her, but she was fighting it again.
Why she was being so damn cute?
Yeah, she really liked her. There wasn’t another explanation for this.
“You didn’t need to…”
“It’s a thank you gift for your help today.”
Rosalia smiled sadly at her. The nice gesture had quickly turned into a bittersweet one. It was a thank you for helping her with something she didn't want her to do.
What was she supposed to do? She probably didn’t feel the same. She had a date with someone. Hell, maybe she didn’t even like girls. Well, she herself didn’t know she liked girls until it happened, but there’s no way Aurora would be in the same situation. She’ll just have to learn to live with it. Probably with time she’d stop feeling things for her.
"Wanna join me for a bit while I try this?" Rosalía proposed as Aurora kept standing in front of her.
“Sure, why not?“ Aurora beamed at the invitation and sat in the space Rosalía made in her bed beside her, before taking a bite of a spring roll.
“Yuummm, this is amazing, Aurora! One of the best I’ve had.”
“Yeah, the food is pretty great, actually.”
“And the company? I want details!”
If Rosalía wanted to move on, the first thing she had to do was acting normal, like a friend, as if nothing was happening inside her heart. Also, probably she’d have to get used to the idea of Aurora dating James.
“It was great, we talked about a lot of things. James is a dog lover, likes to go hiking, and tries to go to concerts as much as he can, he's really interesting.”
“Oh, dog lover, that’s all we needed! Her fans will faint when they find out!”
Aurora chuckled, “Yeah, I think they might.”
“And he likes hiking, eh? Just like you.”
"Yeah, actually we agreed to go hiking sometime."
“Oooooh, you already planned a second date!” Rosalía hated herself, as she felt her excitement was excessive and maybe overacted.
Aurora blushed, “No! I mean, we didn’t set a date to do it, but...”
“Well, if the night went that well, he definitely is going to ask you out again," she assured, as she felt a pang on her stomach at the last words. She didn’t know how she managed to tease and smile at Aurora while she was dying of jealousy and pain inside.
*
Rosalía was confident that she could deal with the situation just like that night. That she could pretend everything was fine, show interest in her date, and tease her about it, but she was wrong. Completely wrong.
Ever since she found out she liked Aurora, the days turned into nightmares. Seeing Aurora under a different light, a light of love, complicated everything. She would feel nervous around her, to the point of making her blush sometimes, and frequently she would avoid group chattings to not risk the possibility of having to hear the gang teasing Aurora with James. All those feelings forced her to start spending less and less time with her friend, and the rest of the group as well.
Aurora noticed the change, of course. They were extremely close and above all, she was smart. She noticed Rosalía wasn't joining her early in the morning to go to work together, to which she would respond that she overslept or that she was too tired and preferred sleeping half an hour more. At the question of why she wasn't joining her at lunch, she would argue she had a lot of paperwork to do with the Diagnostics Team. She had a handful of excuses for her sudden change of behavior.
One afternoon she was leaving for her night shift when she found a couple in sportswear outside the building, kissing. When the man leaned his forehead against the woman's, Rosalía realized, to her misfortune, that the couple was no other than Aurora and James.
“This was great, we definitely should do it some other time," he muttered, gently pulling away from her, "maybe Lola can join us if you like. ”
“Yeah, that would be fun,” Aurora replied, smiling shyly.
Rosalía stood motionless at the portal. She was ready for anything except that. Well, no, she wasn't ready for anything that involved Aurora and James actually.
“Rosie!” Aurora exclaimed, embarrassment on her features, as she realized she was looking at them.
“H-Hey! Sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt.”
“Nonsense. Come on!” she reprimanded, gesturing her to approach them with her hand, “let me introduce you to James. I can’t believe I haven’t had the chance in all these weeks! James, she’s Rosie, Rosalía Muñoz.”
Rosalía sauntered down the stairs, her legs feeling like two heavy pillars of concrete crashing against the staircase, “Hi James, nice to meet you,” she said, her throat constricted.
“Rosie, nice to meet you too! Em has said amazing things about you!”
Em? He already had a nickname for her? A pet name?
“She has?”
“Oh yeah, every time she does it she leaves me with the feeling I want to be your friend too, so I hope this is just the first step to that.”
Fuck. She couldn’t even hate him, he was too nice.
"I've heard plenty of good things about you too, James," she responded, forcing a smile and fighting the tears that were forming in her eyes. "Well, I'm not gonna keep interrupting you, besides I'm on my way to work, so, see you later!" she said, waving her hand as she started walking toward the T-station.
She hadn’t had a train ride that shitty in months. Maybe when she found out Teresa Martinez had died, or maybe when she was suspended from her duties after the Preliminary Hearing about Teresa's death. Either way, it was horrific between trying to fight the tears back and forcing herself to think about anything else but that stupid kiss and the way she was smiling at him. But in the end, the tears were stronger.
The image in her head was too much. Things were getting better than she thought. If they were kissing, it meant that Aurora really liked him; she really was interested in pursuing a relationship with him, and that meant there was absolutely no chance for her. Well, who she was trying to kid, she never had a chance, but it's inevitable to build ideas and prospects in the head. Daydream about it. Clearly, she couldn't do it anymore.
The following days just got worse. She kept finding them everywhere, and one day James even joined them at Donahue's. She considered asking a round of tequila to shut her mind down with alcohol, but then she rejected the idea as she feared she would make a scene drunk. Rosalía didn't want her to know by any means, so instead, she waited fifteen minutes, and then she made up an excuse and went home, alone.
Even if she tried to be subtle, soon her friends started to notice she was distant. Sienna asked her if she was okay, if something had happened with Aurora because she had shown her some concerns about it. She alleged again it was just work. No one kept insisting on the topic.
It was the morning of her free day. All of her friends were at work so she sauntered relaxed toward the kitchen to have breakfast, happy with the palpable solitude.
A few minutes after she sat up to eat her pancakes, Aurora appeared in the hall to make her own breakfast, “Hey Rosie.”
Her name in her mouth made her shiver. She raised her head, startled, her cheeks flushing instantly, "Good morning," she said and kept eating her breakfast in silence as if she wasn't completely crushed that she was there at that moment.
Aurora served a mug of coffee and made a bowl of fruits, oatmeal, and yogurt and then sat across Rosalía, who had her nose practically buried in her pancakes, unable to look at her. "How much time are you gonna be ignoring me?" she asked after staring at her for a few seconds.
Rosalía’s eyes widened but didn’t look up at her, “What are you talking about?”
“Come on, Rosie. You’re better than that. Are you gonna tell me what has you so… frustrated or distant with me?”
“You’re imagining things.”
The woman sighed with a stern expression on her face, "Rosalía, you've spent the last month ignoring me. We're friends, I know something is bothering you."
A month. Just a month. It felt like an eternity. How much time will it take her to extract Aurora out of her mind? Of her heart?
“Nothing to worry about, it will pass soon,” she said, still looking at her plate.
“Is this for the Benitez case?”
Completely confused with the question, Rosalía raised her head and a pair of worried chocolate eyes met hers, “Benitez case? What Benitez case?”
“The Lyme syndrome case Dr. Banerji made us compete to assist a conference in New York.”
Rosalía tried to remember that case until she found the image of Naveen talking to a group of second-year residents about this competition. Between what was happening with Aurora and the work on the Diagnostic Team, she didn't have the time to fight for it, which was unusual. In better times, Aurora and Jackie would've spent the entire day running to find a solution and throwing dirty looks at each other every time they were in their sights.
“Oh, that. No, no, you deserved it, it’s completely fine.”
“Then what is your problem? Are you really not gonna tell me?”
Rosalía sighed.
Aurora wasn't this pushy. Maybe she was truly concerned, and she couldn't blame her. She had been extremely strange the past months, to the point of making Aurora ask her other friends to find out what was happening, but Rosalía kept telling her everything was fine.
Her heart started racing fast, her cheeks flushed. She couldn't do it. She could not tell her. She prohibited herself to do it.
“I can’t tell you,” she whispered before standing up from her chair and sprint towards her room, but she couldn’t go very far, as Aurora stopped her just a few feet from the table.
“Rosie, please tell me what’s happening,” she said in a soft voice. Rosalia melted. Her eyes fluttered shut at the mention of her name in her mouth, once again. “I’m worried about you.”
"I…" she closed her eyes. She shouldn't, but all her body was begging for her to tell Aurora the truth. She tried to look for another excuse but stopped instantly and resolutely. She didn't deserve to be lied to that way.
Maybe she will understand, she thought. She’s an adult, maybe it will be awkward at first, but they would eventually move on, and maybe that was the best, to tell her than keep ignoring her and hiding this from her.
Rosalía opened her eyes again, and Aurora was staring at her, waiting.
“Aurora I….” she sighed, her breath was shaking. “I like you. More than a friend.”
Aurora’s eyes widened in shock for a brief second until she forced herself to school her features, probably to not break her heart more than already was, “But Rosie you…”
“Yes, I’ve always liked guys, until I liked you,” she confessed.
Aurora remained silent for a moment, “I’m sorry I… I don’t know what to say.”
“You don’t have to say anything. You wanted to know why I was like this with you, there you have. But don’t worry about me, I’ll be fine. I just hope things don’t get weird between us,” she said before running away, successfully this time, from the kitchen. Once she reached her cove, she slammed the door shut and locked herself for the day.
Rosalía didn't see Aurora again until the next day at the hospital. They said hi awkwardly to one another and then kept with their routines more or less normally. By the end of the day, nervousness invaded her as she realized she'd have to see her for dinner, but lucky for her, Aurora wasn't at home when dinner was ready, so everyone assumed she had a last-minute date with James. Despite feeling internally relieved that she wouldn't face her again that night, the idea of Aurora with James kept itching just as the day of their first date.
She had finally managed to fall asleep when a knock on her door woke her up. Sleepy, she walked to open the door, only to find Aurora in the dark hall.
“Can we talk?” she said, a hand curling around her middle finger.
She looked so nervous and kind of worried, that didn’t give Rosalía a chance to get nervous too for being in front of her after what had happened, “Sure, come in.”
As she turned the lights of her bedroom on, she realized Aurora was blushing and her posture was noticeably stiff, “Aurora, are you okay? Something happened?” she asked, gently stroking her arms, inspecting her carefully.
Aurora’s body trembled at her touch so she parted her hands instantaneously, “I’m sorry…” she muttered, taking a step away.
“No,” she mumbled, grabbing her by the wrist, and gently pulling her to her body.
Now it was Rosalía’s turn to shudder, the coldness of her skin against hers causing tingles in every inch of her body.
She looked up at her, seeking for any clue that could indicate what was she doing there, if was something was happening to her, but there was nothing more than a pair of chocolate eyes staring at her in a way she'd never seen before, and even if she couldn't tell what it was, it made her stomach flutter.
It was soft but at times it was interrupted by furrowings that denoted fear and maybe some desperation, as if for moments something inside her was pushing her to do something she wasn't ready to do, and then would find the strength, to finally waver again.
Hoping she wasn't reading all the situation wrong, Rosalía tempted fate by getting closer to Aurora until their bodies were now mere inches away from the other, the coolness of one body mixing with the warmth of the other.
At the advancement, Aurora looked at her as if something snapped inside her, all fears and doubts gone, just determination. Determination and… tenderness.
Rosalía felt her breath get caught in her throat as Aurora released her wrist to cup both hands on her cheeks, stroking her so gently, as though she was scared of breaking her. It was dazzling the way Aurora was looking at her, with unrestrained sweetness and warmth. All seemed too good to be true. Most of all, because it was in a way she had been wanting for weeks, and maybe, unknowingly, for months.
It didn’t take her long to mirror her, eyes sparkling at the sight of that precious creature of the universe so close to her, her chocolate eyes exposed to discover the hues and stripes drawn in her irises, her hot breath caressing her lips.
Then, as if something was pulling them, both rested their eyes on their lips and started to shorten the distance.
And for the first time, Rosalía didn’t resist. She let herself go and obeyed the most honest desire of her heart.
Kissing Aurora for the first time felt like floating.
No, it was it was even more mighty than flying. It was freeing and lulling, healing and exciting, and more than that, awakening.
The simple act of kissing her had awakened feelings and desires that she didn't know her heart could harbor. Pure and intense, sincere and encouraging.
Driven by all these sentiments, Rosalía wrapped her arms around her neck as both parted their lips to explore more of one another, and that was the beginning of an addiction that would've lasted hours if it wasn't because they had to catch some breath.
They stared at each other in silence until it was inevitably to giggle as if both were incredulous of what had just happened.
“Rosie I…” she shook her head, blinded by the beautiful smile Rosalía was giving her, “Damn, I like you too. So much. I’ve liked you for a long time.”
Rosalía opened her eyes wide, completely off-guarded by her confession, “You what? Are you serious?”
Aurora closed her eyes as she took a deep breath, and when she opened her eyes again, she looked at her amusingly, "I've liked you for, I don't know, several months now, since we started speaking in civil terms to one another. At that time I told you I was mean to you because I didn't want to trust anybody, and you were a threat to my career, but after a while, I realized part of why I tried to hate you so much was because I liked you."
Rosalía chuckled, blown away by how alike their stories were.
"It was hard for me to acknowledge that because I had never… I had never felt that for a girl. But I tried to ignore it, thinking you probably would never feel the same. Then I met James and I thought it was a sign, that maybe he would help me be over you… and I really liked him, you know? He's nice, he's treated me like anyone did before... but then you told me you liked me and… I couldn't believe it, that's why I reacted that way yesterday. I couldn't believe you felt that for me too. I swear I could've never imagined you were.... jealous. Not for a single moment, I linked your behavior to James and me."
Both shared a sad smile until Rosalía broke the silence, "First, I also thought I hadn't had a chance with you because you had only liked men, and second… If it wasn't for James, I don't know when I'd realized I liked you, but the idea of you dating somebody just… ignited something inside me, and the night of your date I finally could tell what it was."
“Oh my god, Rosie,” she laughed, also blown away by her story.
“What about James?”
“I spoke with him. I told him it wouldn’t work out between us because there was someone else.”
“Oh. So that means I have you all by myself now?”
Aurora gave her a mischievous smile as she tucked a strand of her wavy brown hair behind her ear, “Well, if that’s what you want."
Before that moment, Rosalía thought it would be hard for her to respond to that question, as it was something she had never experienced. Being with a girl. But now that she was in the situation, the answer became so easy because what was happening wasn’t anything unknown or terrifying. It was love, and love was simple. Simple and encouraging, so there was nothing to be afraid of.
Rosalía leaned to kiss her deeply before sweetly whispering:
“It is.”

MASTERLIST
PART ONE
————————————————
She wanted now to escape from this building as if that kind of air was blocking her lungs. A cup of lemon tea would somehow release the tension in her shoulders.
At Derry Roasters everyone were talking about the same topic with new faces appeared in front of her. Interns chatting excitedly about their first day and cursing their attendees for the anxious hours they spent until now.
She let a smirk to herself remembering the first day when she was an intern. A rebel one and didn’t even have to spare a glance to the man whom she hated the most. She was so clueless about him that only knew his name but not his face.
You can say she was the only intern who got the attention of Dr. Ramsey after a decade and no one could replace her.
The interns eyed her incredulously as if they were seeing a miracle whispering to each other.
“It’s her!”
“Shush dude she doesn’t like gossiping.”
“She’s so fucking gorgeous!”
“Damn lucky whoever is with her!”
“It’s Dr. Ramsey.”
“Really?”
“They’re such a power couple!”
“Hm. I wonder if they’ll invite us to their weeding.”
“Matt shut up or she’s going to hear us and I don’t want to have any bones broken!”
“Fine fine.”
She took a seat at the corner of the bar facing the window in her left.
This was their place.
The place where they felt themselves and out of the real world.
He would be opposite her smiling and telling his stories as a troublemaker teenager or how his father would always get angry after another defeat in the chess game.
Or how he would touch and kiss her hand bringing closer to him.
Or how she would scold him to not do anything publicly and he still didn’t give a damn what the others would say.
She really wanted to relive these moments so much but her logical side told her he was wrong and he had to apologise.
Whereas the feeling side... told her to go and kiss him and tell him that it was just a temporary weakness and that she loves him.
While she was sipping her tea relishing a sigh a soft voice distracted her.
“So British of you.”
She chuckled while placing the tea to the plate. “You’re not British if you don’t drink a cup of tea.”
“I highly agree with that. And you’re not American if you don’t drink an espresso.”
Both women shared a laugh when Harper Emery took a seat opposite her.
“Soo... how’s the first day going?”
“Really Harper? Just say what you want. I know this look of yours.” She knew what she came for and didn’t want to skip it like nothing had happened. Even though she sounded harsh Harper only let a gentle smile.
“Fine I just wanted to ease this conversation a bit but it looks like I have a long talk with you little miss.”
“If he has sent you here don’t even try.” She said nonchalantly bringing back the tea to her lips.
“Correction: he didn’t and I don’t think he would.”
He wouldn’t? Of course what did you expect.
“I came here because I wanted to talk with you Klaw. As friends.”
“What makes you think you can change?”
Mini Ethan. Stay strong Harper.
“Well let’s just say that I have this instinct of mine that what I want to achieve- it will be achieved. I know it’s sounds cliche but I’ve never failed in this path.”
“Keep going then.”
“Look Klaw... I think the real problem is not you or him. It’s you both against the problem.” She eyed her curiously.
“The problem is Leland and it’s dragging you both into a black hole till you fall and no one’s going to help you. What you need to understand is that Bloom is trying to provoke us and to see who’s going to be on his side. What Ethan agreed wasn’t because he is on Bloom’s side. He agreed because-“
“That was the only way he said.” Klaw replied in frustration while reminiscing his court voice on her mind.
“Tone, please?” Harper arched an eyebrow.
Gosh they’re both the same.
“Sorry.” She murmured while her gaze was falling on her nails ripping the cuticles.
“As I was saying he only agreed because he knew that even he would do the contrary, Bloom wouldn’t listen to him anyway without asking us because this is his character and is unpredictable. Ethan is taking this calmly but do not forget- he will always be on your side. Yes he’s really mad with you because of your lack of control against your emotions and of not showing professionalism. But he is wrong too for treating you as someone foreign and not considering as your colleague and not rethinking that not always you will agree in everything.”
Harper was thinking if this could work for both of them because she wanted to help as much as she could and also couldn’t see them separated from each other.
“Or if I make it simple- just fucking go and get him already!”
“I don’t think that would be simple. He said if I don’t get my shit back then there’s no way I could step in the team.”
“And you think with such a weak and useless threat of him you’re not going to talk about this? Bullshit. This is the perfect moment to say the apology because if not- you’re going to be very late and you’ll lose him.”
“But this is not actually what hurt him.” Harper frowned in confusion while Klaw’s eyes started to well up.
“I offended him Harper. I said that... that he doesn’t care about me even though I know he cares! He does...a lot but... I’ve really messed this thing up and I’m worried about facing him.” She gulped while putting her palms behind her neck. “I can’t do this. How am I supposed to look him in the eye Harper? I know he is right now really tired of this behaviour of mine and has tried his best to push me and to seal this bad sided woman you’re talking to! Ethan has been a careful, supportive and kind to me in many ways that I can’t explain. Whereas I...” she let a scoff. “I’ve been nothing but only bragging about everything and not be the best girlfriend he wants.”
Harper Emery was lucky to know someone as Klaudia Craig because not only she had been a great shoulder to lean on for everyone but also has been a great person to her.
She would always be in a debt for making Aurora speak and standing up for herself in her intern year and to show what a mistake she did by underrating her niece for her achievements.
And here she was now- confessing her feelings such beautifully for a man whom she loves most and if she was in her place... No.
It was clearly that this woman was the only spark who could give light in Ethan’s darkness and the contrary.
They were both meant for each other.
“Then all of these things you said to me-“ She leaned her palm giving hers a gentle squeeze. “- you should say to him. Whatever happens. I think he will listen to you.”
“You think so?”
“Hey. I’m a neurosurgeon and this the dumbest question ever raised by you Dr. Craig.”
Klaw let a weary chuckle. “Okay. Let’s see if the grumpy man wants to talk with the grumpy woman.”
“That’s my girl.”
—————————
Her steps lead her to the Diagnositics Office and far from the corner she could see there was no one inside. So the only place he could be was...
Hospital’s gym.
She could hear some hard breathing and panting while kickboxing in a big arena. He was wearing his loosely T-shirt and his sport’s boxers that fit perfectly his shape of the body.
Every movement he did and his focused gaze to the training made her head tilt in a wander that how was possible this man could be such sexy.
And how she was so lucky that he was hers.
Or that’s what she thought.
“Ethan!” She called behind him but it seemed he didn’t hear her as he was having his headphones on clearly listening to his rap music. She tried again. “Ethan Jonah Ramsey!”
No answer again. “Is he fucking kidding me or what? I’ll show him.”
She entered the ring arena rapidly and when she was just about to call him again unexpectedly was twirled in his arms, her back facing chest. She gasped and felt her breath hitched. What now?
“Well look who made it here.”
“I...”
“What the hell do you want Rookie?” He growled on her left ear.
Her lips trembled despite her efforts to not cry in front of him. “I’m sorry.”
He sensed her change of tone and turned her back to face him.
“I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m sorry I know that I’m really such a bad bitch when it comes to these situations but I want you to know that I love you and I don’t want us to have these debates ever again because I know that always screw the things up... I ALWAYS RUIN IT!” Her last words flinched him when she punched his shoulder in anger and couldn’t see her in this broken state.
“No. I ruined it.” He admitted. “I know I shouldn’t even think about what you considered Harper at first because I know you weren’t jealous about her and still I thought it-” he let a weary chuckle “-and you never fail to be right about that. And I know I shouldn’t treat you as someone who wasn’t part of the team and I’m sorry if I made you doubt about yourself.”
He pulled her closer giving her the kiss she deserved but she backed off saying. “No more fights?”
He gave her the brightest smile. “No more.” She smiled too and felt his soul completely in peace. “Now Miss Craig-” he held his right hand to her. “-would you like to be my companion for tonight’s gala?”
She giggled and cleared her throat. “How can I refuse it Mister Ramsey?”
———————————————-
After two hours at Ethan’s apartment.
“I seriously can’t believe we’re going to that fucking party.” She was strapping her high heels frustratingly then got up while Ethan was doing his buttons of his sleeves looking at the mirror.
“Relax Rookie. Just put a fake smile and chat about medicine as doctors usually do.”
She scoffed while reaching to do his tie. “How can you be such calm? I expected you to be furious just like me.”
“Well unlike you ma’am I have a master’s degree that I’ve held for eleven years for being talkative, social and well respected diagnostician.” He let a smirk when she quirked her left eyebrow.
“I totally agree with the last one but I highly doubt about the first two y’know.”
He pressed her body closely to him, his eyes looking intensely into her dark brown. “And may I know why you’re doubting Dr. Craig?”
Instead of making it as a casual chat she turned it to something else. “About everything.” He got the message when she lowered her gaze playing mindlessly with the buttons of his lapel jacket. “I mean- what’s going to happen later Ethan? Some things have changed and we already are aware of it but...” She pressed her lips.
“But?”
“For how long? What if Bloom will try his tactics again to track another doctor and if there’s going to be someone else- who knows? I’m scared Ethan. What if this is the end of all of us? What if we lose our jobs for nonsense reasons?”
“I know. I’m worried about it too and I have absolutely no idea where this is going to take us. But one thing’s for sure.”
She let his hands cup her cheeks meeting with his face.
“No one...not even Bloom can tell us to back off from what is right. We will continue our mission, Naveen’s mission and we will always do it for the sake of the Oath. Don’t lose the confidence you have and all your thoughts even when they’re wrong. I’ve told you since the first day of your residency last year. It is not wrong to ask questions ‘cause if you didn’t well I would be very concerned. I know you say that you trust yourself but I don’t agree with it. So please... don’t overthink it. Let’s just enjoy this night while we can hm?”
His voice was so assuring and there was nothing else she wanted to hear.
The one she fell so hard capturing her in an inevitable trap.
His presence made her entirely safe whenever he gave a smile just like now with his eyes reflecting on hers like a magnet.
She wanted to stay there forever.
In his arms.
In his heart.
He seemed to notice it and kissed her forehead while she was closing her eyes.
“You always calm me down. How the hell you do this Rams’?”
“You’re not the only one with skills here lil girl.” She scrunched her nose when he tipped with his index finger. “Now I think we should leave before we are too late.”
“Actually...” She bit the corner of her lip. “Can we please not go? I don’t want to see that big rat blooming all the way up.” She pleaded while shrugging her right shoulder crossing her arms on her back.
“Klaw you can’t be serious.” When he saw her expression he scoffed before pointing his finger. “You’re too late to anything else because we’re dressed now for that occasion. Many doctors will be there and then is goin-.”
She grabbed instantly the back of his neck silencing him with a kiss. “Will you repeat that again doctor?”
“Not now Klaw-”
She kissed him again pinning him to the wall then whispering in a sultry voice.
“Wrong answer doctor. I’ll propose this- we’ll get the best scotch from Reggie and then buy some Calzones while we are enjoying the starry night that only the Boston’s sky can give us. Completely alone. Just the two of us. So...what do you say? I think it’s an opportunity of a lifetime.” She winked.
He sighed while looking up in the ceiling as if searching for help in his defeat. She loved making him at this state.
At her command.
“How the hell do you convince me Craig?”
“Well you’re not the only one with skills here old man.” She squeezed his cheeks while he was frowning. “Aww you’re so cute and you look like a fish doing ‘o’!”
He spoke or better tried to mumble the words. “I’m mnot olf man and I’m mnot ffsh!”
“Yeah yeah that’s why you can’t use the Instagram correctly.” She giggled when couldn’t contain her laughter anymore then took his hand leading them to the door. “Now shall we go because I’m really starving and we won’t make it home earlier.”
“True. We won’t make it home until the morning.”
He gave her a known devilish grin while he was unlocking the door that made her eyes go wide, her heartbeats accelerate and gulped hardly.
He winked.
Damn it.
This was going to be a very long night ahead of them.

the smell of vanilla.
Pairing: Aurora Emery x F!MC (Riza Hawkeye)
Words: 2114
Rating: Trigger warning (mentions of depression, starving one’s self, death), there’s fluff at the end don’t panic-

Aurora had been watching Riza for a while now.
After the funeral, it was as if Riza became a totally different person. The bright, humourous, flirtatious self was gone. Whenever she smiled, it was a tired one. A smile that did not reach her eyes and those green flames did not flicker anymore. It was just dull green. There was also a hidden melancholy behind those emerald eyes, one Aurora couldn’t touch on. She didn’t want to jump to conclusions.
Whenever they have passed by in their apartment, Riza merely gives a smile and a small little wave, before disappearing behind the door to her bedroom. Aurora would come back from late-night shifts, laughing softly at Jackie and Sienna asleep on top of each other on the couch still dressed before making her way to Riza’s bedroom, slowly opening her bedroom door.
She would slowly watch the gentle rise and fall of Riza’s form under the covers, leaning against the door frame.
“Worried about Riza, huh?” Elijah wheeled out from his room, in his casual clothes, drying his hair with his towel.
Aurora had nearly yelped in surprise but had the decency to keep her mouth shut. Her hazel brown eyes turned wistful, still lingering on sleeping Riza.
“Yeah,” she sighed. “It’s like she changed, you know?”
“Trust me,” Elijah said. “It’s like she’s working as per normal with the diagnostics team, but there’s just...something I can’t grab on. Something’s definitely going on, can’t be just the...funeral and with everything surrounding that that made her like this.”
So, when Aurora got the message from her Edenbrook roommates that Riza had collapsed at the hospital during her shift, it had confirmed her suspicions on what had been truly going on.
-
It was like any other regular day for a hospital which was down in the dumps from a pulled fund. Perks of being a hospital dependent on funds from the government, really.
Jackie, Sienna, Elijah, Bryce were all gathered at the nurses’ station, along with Danny with his arms propped up against the counter, watching Riza conversing with Esme about the intern’s patients for today. It was the usual neutral-looking expression, eyes scanning through charts as she explained what Esme needed to take note of.
When Riza was done, she gave a curt nod to her intern, before making her way to the diagnostics team’s meeting room, the door clicking shut. The residents and the one nurse at the station could practically see Esme trudge her way to where they were standing.
“So,” Bryce broke the silence. “Figured out what’s wrong with her?”
Concern etched along the lines of Esme’s face, her lips pressed into a thin line. “She looks paler than usual, and her lips kind of lost their colour? She looks alive though, cheeks still pink and all. There was sweat forming at her neck and hairline, plus I could practically feel her body heat from where I stood…”
“Should we ask her-” Before Elijah could even finish his sentence, Jackie sighed and shook her head.
“We’re going to get nothing out of her if we keep on pressing her for answers,” Jackie eyed warily at the meeting room of the diagnostics team. “Even Ortega’s got nothing from asking her, she’ll just deny again and again.”
“And from what Aurora told me and our personal observations,” Elijah added. “When we asked her to join us for breakfast, she kindly rejected our offer and headed to the hospital early. Same goes for dinner, she just smiles wearily and says that she’ll have the leftovers once she was done studying, but she was already asleep when we checked if she had eaten the food we had left for her.”
“Anyways,” Sienna said. “We should all be all eyes on our girl today, be on a lookout for anything out of the ordinary, okay?”
Everyone in the circle nodded, including Esme.
“What’s the gathering for, doctors?” Harper asked as she stepped out of her office and walked towards them. “Is it anything I should know about?”
“Well, you see,” everyone swivelled their heads towards Esme when she started to speak up. She flinched at the amount of attention at first, but she took a deep breath and continued with resolution in her eyes. “It’s about Dr. Hawkeye…”
“Oh?”
After explaining the situation to Harper, she nodded and was surprised when Esme bowed slightly to her. “Please help us be on a lookout for her, Dr. Emery...Dr. Hawkeye means a lot to me, and to this group of people here.”
Harper nodded and smiled. “Don’t worry, if peers can’t get her to talk, maybe superiors would. But I won’t do anything to pressure her, of course.”
“Thank you.”
Long after the others had dispersed from the nurses’ station, true enough, Riza started to falter, nearly tripping on her heels (which she never does). She pressed a hand to her forehead, the other holding onto the wall, before losing all the energy in her legs and collapsed onto the floor.
Jackie happened to be exiting a patient’s ward when she heard a crash and saw her roommate on the floor. “Riza!”
She nearly skidded (god forbid, she did not or else she would be dropping her job as a doctor for the rest of her life) while running to Riza, and flinched when she touched her friend’s arm. “God, that’s scorching hot! Stretcher! I need a stretcher here, stat!”
Riza’s eyebrows were tightly knitted together, breathing as if she was out of breath, cheeks flushed and cold sweat licking at her face and neck. She could barely keep her eyes open while trying to squint at Jackie.
So much for keeping it together, Riza had thought, before darkness consumed her vision.
-
Aurora was still on her shift when she received a text message from their group chat.
She nearly fainted at it but cursed mentally when she realised that she could not leave early due to her superior (curse him), so she quickly sent off a message that she would be coming over to Edenbrook once she was done with work.
Soon enough, Aurora literally ran for her life to the entrance of Edenbrook, ignoring the surprised and curious looks of the onlookers as she brushed past them and met up with Sienna at the nurses’ station.
“You ran here?” Sienna asked, holding Aurora by her arms.
“O-Of course, this is Riza Hawkeye we’re talking about,” Aurora said in between breaths. “Obviously I had to run here. How is she?”
“See for yourself,” Sienna gestured to the window of Riza’s ward.
There was some colour coming back to Riza’s skin, compared to the horrendously pale expression that she had been having. Aurora sighed in relief but clenched and unclenched her fists at her sides.
“Turns out that she had been surviving this shift with a very high fever with slight malnutrition,” Sienna looked at her friend through the window. “We gave her fluids to cool down her body temperature, and thank god it went down. She hasn’t eaten yet since she was out cold throughout-”
“I can enter...right?”
Sienna was surprised at the sudden interruption but smiled gratefully. “Of course you can,” she checked her watch, before walking to the locker room, giving a small wave at Aurora. “It’s the end of my shift now, I’ll see you back at home, yeah?”
Aurora returned the gesture, before shaking her head and scoffed. “No promises.”
The ward was quiet, except for Riza’s breathing. Aurora set her bag down by the bedside table, and sat on a chair by Riza’s bed. When she tentatively slid her hand into Riza’s, it was cold but with a bit of warmth. To be honest, she was shocked right to the core when she read that Riza had collapsed from a high fever, and that they had to be quick or else their hands were going to be scalded from the body heat.
Riza Hawkeye would never be in this kind of a pitiful state on the job. Heck, in front of her mentor Dr. Ethan Ramsey too.
But…
Aurora shook her head, slowly giving Riza’s hand a small squeeze.
“That sad face does not look cute on you, Emery.”
Aurora’s head immediately faced Riza’s weak smile, her emerald green eyes twinkling with amusement.
“Damn you, Riza…” She choked on a sob. “Do you have any idea how worried I was for you when I received a message that you had collapsed in the hospital? I even ran my way here from work to see you!”
“Even faster than your performance during the baseball game?”
Aurora hesitated, before nodding.
“I see,” Riza said, before leaning further back into the pillow. There was guilt lying behind her eyes, and Aurora could see it etched into the beautiful lines of her face.
“I...I’m sorry, Aurora.”
“For what?”
“Everything.”
Aurora didn’t know what to think of her answer. Sure they started off rocky when they were still interns, then they started to build on their friendship, to the point where she had gained the courage to stand up to her aunt for being used as an outlet to vent because Harper missed neurology during her job as Chief of Medicine in Naveen’s absence. At the end of their intern year, she was then offered a vacancy at Riza’s shared apartment since Landry moved out.
Then came that med school reunion dinner that Riza accompanied her to. It felt as if that changed the way she viewed the relationship between herself and Riza Hawkeye. When she cheekily introduced herself as Aurora’s girlfriend, the gears inside of her shifted.
Was that what she felt all along? Did she...like Riza?
Not as a friend, but something more?
Aurora didn’t know what to answer the bedridden Riza, only for tears to start welling up in her eyes and choked on a sob as she spoke.
“Everything?” She asked. “Really? Everything?”
“I know I apologised to you prior for being such an ass to you during our intern year,” Riza started. “And then came the baseball game, which I still feel guilty for. Dang it, it feels like all the apologies in the world can’t erase the damage I did to your heart. And...after the funeral, after a loss of Edenbrook’s family, it felt like it was the final straw to all of my sufferings.”
It was true. Starting out at Edenbrook’s elite diagnostics team as the youngest and a junior fellow was something that she could handle, but the package that came with the job was something that Riza struggled to grapple with. Especially when the sudden pull of the fund happened, and the competition for funds began to arise between Edenbrook and Mass Kenmore, the longtime medical rivals in American history.
Riza Hawkeye, a junior fellow and Edenbrook’s golden child, couldn’t have possibly handled the complications that followed her career with the hospital’s diagnostics team.
No one should.
“I was nothing but a nobody to all of you during this time in order to cope with myself and my crippling mental health,” Riza’s eyes turned wistful, as she looked out of the window, at the night sky. “I even slowly stopped communicating with you at some point, but you just kept persistently checking up on me. And I really appreciate that.”
Aurora’s chest swelled with emotion at Riza’s words.
“But still, I regretted how I acted on the woman I like a lot..”
The vinyl in Aurora’s head had scratched to an abrupt stop.
The woman...Riza liked the most?
“I…”
“I like you, Aurora Emery. A lot. A lot, a lot. And if you would have me, when things settle down, let’s go out together?”
Aurora, yet again, didn’t know how to respond, but to chuckle through her tears. Riza reached up to her cheek and wiped them away.
“How romantic of you to ask me out when you are in bed like this.”
“Guess I’ve been binging on too many korean dramas for this moment.”
Riza scooted over to one side of the bed, then patted the empty space. “Come sleep with me? I don’t wanna be all alone tonight.”
“One of your many schemes to make me yours, I’m assuming?”
Riza feigned defeat. “Oh, no! You’ve seen through my schemes, whatever shall I do?”
“Dork,” Aurora scoffed, before sliding off her flats and getting comfortable under the covers, sliding her body against Riza’s. Warm, Riza thought to herself, wrapping her arm around Aurora’s waist and tucking her chin on top of her head.
Riza Hawkeye was then lulled to sleep, despite her growing hunger, embraced by the smell of vanilla.

Bonding Moments
Summary: After a hard day at work, Naomi bonds with an unlikely ally.
Pairing: Mentions of F!MC x Ethan, but mostly F!MC x Aurora friendship
Word Count: 3k+
So...this story took a completely unexpected turn and I think I’m going to add a part 2. But as always, let me know what you think!
Naomi really thought after a disastrous intern year that she’d have a handle working on the diagnostics team with Ethan. But it was hard, much harder than she anticipated. The tension in the air, the lingering glances, the unspoken words, the blurred lines that they constantly tiptoed, it was all becoming too much to handle.
It all came to a head on a fateful Friday. Naomi was having a really shitty day. On top of being exhausted from working over 19 hours straight, she and Ethan had been running tests on a patient—a 13 year old gymnast named Anna—all day, only to find out that she had an inoperable tumor growing on her spine.
This wasn’t the first patient Naomi lost, but it hit her harder than most. She barely made it out of Anna’s room after delivering the bad news before she started crying.
“Rookie?” Ethan started, catching her by the elbow.
“Sorry.” Naomi wiped her eyes hurriedly. “Sorry, just give me a minute, I’ll pull myself together.”
“Come with me,” Ethan said, his grip still on her elbow. He gently lead her to the privacy of his office, where she fully broke into sobs once the door was closed
Naomi sank into a chair and let her tears flow freely. What was the point in trying to stop them? Ethan slid a box of tissues in her direction. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
“I usually don’t cry, but I can’t help but feel bad,” Naomi continued with a shuddering breath. “She’s just a kid. She has her entire life ahead of her. Or had. She’s supposed to be getting ready for high school, and meeting new friends. And she and her parents put all of their trust into us and we failed them. I failed them.”
“Don’t do that to yourself. You did everything you could, but unfortunately this one is out of your control.”
“I still feel horrible.”
Ethan rounded his desk and crouched down next to Naomi. “I get it, I really do. When Delores died, it felt like a hole in the earth opened up and swallowed me. And I felt hopeless. It always hurts when there’s nothing we can do, but you can’t bog yourself down with guilt.”
Naomi knew Ethan was right, it still hurt. A lot. “I feel like there should be something I can do.”
“Right now, all you can do is make her as comfortable as possible, should she choose to stay here. If not, you let her go and live her life.”
They fell into a heavy silence, Naomi trying to regain her composure and Ethan rubbing soothing circles on the back of her hand with his thumb. Naomi found herself relaxing. Her cries subsided, tampering down into a quiet whimper and the occasional hiccup.
“You think you’ll be okay for the rest of your shift?” Ethan asked, breaking the silence.
“Yeah. It’s almost over thankfully.” She just had to get through the next hour without incident and she was free for the next two days.
Ethan reached out and swiped at Naomi’s cheek, catching the tears that had fallen. He leaned forward and placed a kiss at the crown of her head, his lips lingering there. Naomi sighed and leaned into his touch, her eyes fluttering shut. His hands were warm and his cologne was so intoxicating, she felt herself getting dizzy in his presence. All she wanted to do was lean forward and kiss him. It was too much. Too much closeness, too much intimacy and she was getting overwhelmed.
She abruptly pushed her chair back and stood up. “We need to stop.”
“Okay.”
“Ethan, what are we doing?”
“What do you mean?”
“Look, I appreciate you comforting me, but we can’t do this. You put up a wall, you wanted boundaries, you wanted to keep this professional. This isn’t professional. So, you either want to be strictly co-workers, or not.”
He wished he it could that simple. He wished that his feelings for the stubborn and infuriatingly amazing resident were that black and white. “Rookie–”
“I’m in love with you,” Naomi confessed. “And I can’t keep doing this with you, these fleeting moments of intimacy. If I’m being honest with you, it’s torturing me.”
Ethan felt like he had been hit with a semi-truck upon hearing Naomi’s words. All of the air had been sucked out of the room.
“And I don’t know if you feel the same way or not, because of this push and pull we have going on. One day, I feel like we’re making progress and the idea of us maybe being together seems feasible, and then there are days where I feel like I’m interacting with a complete stranger. So for my own sanity, I need you to respect the boundaries you put in place. Please.”
“Of course.” Ethan cleared his throat awkwardly. “I’m sorry.”
Naomi ignored his apology. She knew he truly felt sorry, but it didn’t bring her any solace. “I’m going to finish the rest of my shift. See you around, Dr. Ramsey.” And with that, Naomi scurried out of his office, not even bothering to look back.
~~~~~
And now here she was a few hours later, curled up in a throw blanket, eating a pint of ice cream at the kitchen island, The Notebook playing softly in the background for the millionth time. The apartment was quiet, thankfully. All of her roommates went bowling downtown, but she wasn’t up for it. She just wanted to wallow for the evening.
She heard a set of keys jingle and a few seconds later, Aurora walked in, a large reusable grocery bag in her hand. “Oh! Hey, I didn’t think you’d be home.”
“Hi,” Naomi greeted. Aurora dropped her bag onto the kitchen counter, and pulled out a few avocados, limes, an onion, garlic, cilantro, tomatoes, a bag of chips, and a few jalapeños. “Making guacamole?”
“Yeah. I’ve been craving some for the longest.”
“Cool.” Naomi didn’t say anything else after that. She just silently watched as Aurora washed her hands and meticulously prepared all of her ingredients. The girl was methodical in everything she did.
“You can taste test if you want,” Aurora offered, as she was mashing everything together. “I’m biased because I think everything I cook tastes amazing, but it’d be nice to have an outside opinion.”
“Oh, you do not have to tell me twice.” Naomi grabbed a chip and dipped it into the guacamole. She devoured the chip in on bite.
“Well? Do you think I’m missing anything?”
“It’s perfect,” Naomi said, grabbing another chip.
“Really?”
“Yeah.”
Aurora smiled. “Thank you.”
“You should’ve told us you could cook a lot sooner,” Naomi continued. “Sienna’s getting burnt out as our resident chef.”
“Well, I can't reveal all of my magic at once. I like to keep an air of mystery around. Hell, you weren’t even supposed to find out, I thought I was going to be home alone tonight,”
“So did I. You didn’t want to go out with the rest of the roomies?”
Aurora scoffed. “Please, they wouldn’t want me there anyway.”
“Why do you say that?”
“I get it. I’m tolerated because I pay rent, not because you guys actually like me.”
“You don’t give us the chance to know or like you.”
“I wasn’t liked from day one.”
“You thought we weren’t going to like you or were just going to kiss your ass from day one, and because of that, you came into last year with a major chip on your shoulder.” Aurora opened her mouth to retort, but she quickly closed it once she realized she didn’t really have a defense. “You came in on the offense, claws out, snipping at us, don’t try to deny it.”
“Fine.”
“I get it.”
“Oh really?”
“Yeah. I don’t talk a lot about this, but my grandfather was one of the first African American judges to serve for the federal district court in Maryland. My dad is an attorney, my mother runs a nonprofit in DC, my uncle has his own dental practice, one of my aunts teaches international politics at Georgetown, and the other is getting a PhD in clinical psychology at Northwestern. There’s absolutely no room for slacking in my family. It’s success, or nothing.”
“Wow. Impressive lineage, Valentine.”
“Trust me, I know what it’s like to come from an extremely high achieving family. I get what it’s like striving to be your best and having to go the extra mile to prove yourself in a country that looks down on black women. And I’m sure it’s not easy being the niece of one of the best surgeons in the country, a tidbit I tried to bond with you over on our first day, but you rebuffed me.”
Aurora’s cheeks got hot and Naomi could see them turning a light shade of red. “My first year of medical school, people only wanted to talk to me because I was Harper Emery’s niece. Hell, even the professors were kissing my ass. It’s not easy knowing who’s your friend and who’s using you, but it is easy pushing people away. And on top of that, I had her breathing down my neck every 2 seconds. It’s hard trying to carve out my own path.
“We didn’t care about you being Dr. Emery’s niece, well, I didn’t at least. Jackie might’ve had a hang up, but she would’ve gotten over it. The point I’m trying to make is that you need to let your guard down, just a little bit. And if you don’t, I’ll tear it down myself.”
Aurora laughed. “Is that a threat, Valentine?”
“More like a promise. I have a knack for breaking through people’s rough exteriors.”
“Through annoying stubbornness?”
“Yes.”
“That’s going to take a bit to get used to.”
“But it’ll happen.”
Aurora rolled her eyes and ignored Naomi. “I got tequila too. Do you want any?”
“Oh my gosh, why didn’t you lead with that? I love tequila!”
Naomi ran to the other side of the kitchen, and rummaged through the cabinets until she found two shot glasses. Aurora produced a bottle of Patron from her bag and poured the shots. She also cut a few slices of lime and slid a salt shaker across the counter.
Naomi licked the back of hand and sprinkled a bit of salt onto the skin. She held up her shot glass and clinked it with Aurora’s. “Salut!” She licked the salt off of her hand and downed the shot in one swoop. Then she grabbed a lime wedge and sucked it.
“Dang.”
“I was the queen of body shots back in college.”
“And that doesn’t surprise me at all,” Aurora quipped.
Four rounds of shots later, the ladies were still in the kitchen. The alcohol had completely lowered their inhibitions, and they were currently laughing over a bag of tortilla chips.
“You know what we should do?” Naomi started. “We should do face masks!”
“Do you have any?”
“No, but I can make one.” Naomi’s eyes scoured the kitchen, until they landed on a few extra avocados Aurora bought earlier. “Perfect, avocado and honey masks?”
“Avocado and honey?”
“Don’t judge. It’s a tried and true recipe of mine. Guaranteed to make your skin glow.”
“Fine. Do your worst.” Naomi got to cutting the avocados, while Aurora watched. “So, we know the reason I didn’t go bowling with everyone, but why didn’t you go? You’re like, the leader of this little motley crew.”
“Wasn’t in the mood. I had a...trying day.”
“What happened?”
“It’s a long story.”
“I’m all ears.”
“One of my patients is dying. She has an inoperable tumor, and she’s only a kid.”
“I’m sorry.”
“And I nearly had a meltdown in the hallway, but Eth–Dr. Ramsey pulled me into his office and I cried it out there. And then things snowballed.”
“How?”
Naomi took a deep breath. “I’m swearing you to secrecy. I invoking Super Serious Roomie Confidentiality. What is said and seen in this apartment, must stay in this apartment.”
“Fine, fine, I promise not to say anything.”
“Do you pinky swear?”
Aurora stuck out a pinky and interlocked it with Naomi’s. “Pinky swear.”
“So...I slept with Dr. Ramsey.”
Aurora didn’t say anything for a long time. She just stared ahead at Naomi, almost as if she was looking through her. “I’m sorry, what? Is the alcohol playing tricks on me? Did I hear that correctly? You and Dr. Ramsey?”
“Yes.”
“What? Like….wh...how? What?” Aurora shook her head. “Naomi, I’ve never been rendered speechless before. Wow. You’re sleeping with Ramsey?”
“Slept. I slept with Ramsey, past tense.”
“Oh my god, I knew you were his favorite intern in our cohort, but–”
“No, don’t do that. I didn’t sleep with him to get a leg up in the competition. He wasn’t even working at Edenbrook when it happened the first time.”
“The first time? You slept with him more than once?”
“Twice. We slept together twice.”
“This just gets better and better. Was is...good? Is he good? Did he go down on you? Did you do it in his office?”
“Aurora!” Naomi snapped. “Stop asking questions!”
Aurora held her hands up in mock surrender. “You opened the floodgates! You can’t drop a bomb like that and expect me to not have questions. So spill, at least tell me what happened?”
“The first time was a few days before my hearing. We had spent a lot of time together, bonding over working on Dr. Banerji, and I was there for him when his friend Delores passed away. It had been building and building and building, and we almost slept together in Miami, but he stopped it.”
“What?”
“He said it wouldn’t be ethical since he was my attending and I was competing to be on the diagnostics team. So we had to carry around the weight of what almost happened, on top of our Banerji secret. And then he quit. He left Edenbrook without any regard. I was very confused and heartbroken. But Jackie and Sienna told me to reach out, so I went over to his apartment, and we had a huge argument, and then we had sex.”
“And I thought it was the end of us hurtling past each other,” Naomi continued. “I thought it would be the start of some type of relationship, but Dr. Emery gave him his job back. So we had one more night for the hell of it. And then Dr. Banerji promoted Ethan to head of the diagnostics team, and he gave me a spot on it, to our shock. And dismay. Now Ethan is my direct supervisor, so we’ve been trying to act like nothing happened. But it’s hard to do that, because we keep having these moments.”
Naomi couldn’t help but think of all the time she and Ethan spent together. Bonding at the baseball game, watching over little Ethan in the NICU, him taking her to the opera and then making out with her, her making him her (world famous) hangover helper. All of it. All of those big and little moments are what made this hurt so much more. “I wish I could say it was just sex, that he was a guy and I was a girl and we just wanted to fuck each other. I mean, we did, but—”
“You’re in love with him,” Aurora concluded, staring at Naomi with rapt attention. “And now that I know everything, it’s written all over you.”
Naomi blinked hard, trying to will away the tears that were threatening to fall. “I am. I even told him that today. It’s the reason I didn’t want to go out with everyone else.”
“You know what I think?” Aurora asked rhetorically. “I think guys are stupid. You have to lead them to the water and shove it into their mouths.”
“What?” That managed to get a chuckle out of Naomi. “That’s not how the saying goes, at all.”
“The point I’m trying to make is you need to give Ramsey an ultimatum. March right into his office and say, ‘I love you, and I think you love me too. So fuck ethics, and let’s stop playing around and give this thing a real shot, or don’t ever speak to me in a non professional capacity ever again,’ plain and simple.” Aurora gasped. “Call him now!”
“Now?”
“Why not?”
“He could still be working. And I don’t want to have such a serious conversation over the phone.”
“Stop being such a baby, Valentine. Man up.”
“I’ll talk to him eventually. I want to do it with a clear head. And I don’t even know what I’m going to say to him.”
“Don’t rehearse a grand speech. And don’t wait for the right moment. Life is messy, there will never be a perfect time to do anything.”
Naomi knew Aurora was right, but she was scared. “Okay, no more talking about Ethan tonight. It’s face mask time.”
Aurora poured them both another shot. “Geez, Valentine, your life is like a soap opera.”
“Oh please, Grey’s Anatomy wishes they could supply this type of drama,” Naomi teased.
“You got that right.”
Naomi went back to mixing the ingredients for the face masks, while Aurora sat patiently. She had never done things like this when she was younger, so she didn’t know what to expect.
The front door opened and in walked all of their roommates, plus Bryce and Rafael. They were talking and laughing animatedly, but that all stopped when they saw Aurora and Naomi together in the kitchen.
“Hey guys!” Naomi greeted cheerfully. “How was bowling?”
“I kicked major ass,” Bryce boasted. “But that shouldn’t shock you.”
“Oh please.” Jackie rolled her eyes. “He was alright.”
“Jackie, you got like, 3 gutter balls in a row,” Bryce said. “As long as I was better than you, I consider it a victory.”
“So what are you guys doing?” Sienna asked Naomi and Aurora, pivoting the conversation in a new direction.
“Eating guacamole, getting drunk,” Naomi replied. “Making avocado face masks.”
Bryce gasped. “Face masks without me?” Everyone turned to look at Bryce. “What? You think my face is this perfect without a meticulous skincare routine?”
“So you two have been hanging out together?” Jackie prodded. “All night?”
Naomi nodded. “Yeah. Guys, Aurora is a roomie now. She’s one of us, no ifs, ands, or buts about it.”
Jackie rolled her eyes. “Excuse me?”
“You heard me. She’s part of the gang. We got off on the wrong foot, we misjudged her, she misjudged us, but we’re putting it behind us.”
Aurora sighed. “Look, I’m...sorry. I didn’t give you guys the best first impression of me. I’ve been a lone wolf for so long, and I’m so used to being used and judged because of my last name, I shut people out. I don’t trust easily, which is something I’m willing to work on.”
Jackie visibly deflated at Aurora’s admission. “I guess I didn’t really think of it like that. I was so wrapped up in the competition, I just thought the worst of you, and assumed your aunt was pulling strings. Which was very unfair of me.”
Sienna nodded. “And we didn’t didn’t make matters much better. We stoked the flames every chance we got.”
“So can we all call a truce and get along?” Naomi suggested. “We’re roommates and coworkers, we might as well make the best of the situation.”
Aurora nodded. “I can do that.”
“So can I,” Jackie agreed.
“Us too,” Elijah added. “Welcome to the gang, Aurora. We do Sunday brunches, and go to extreme lengths to make each other happy.”
“Awww guys,” Bryce cooed, miming wiping a tear from his eye. “This is so beautiful.”
“Shut it, Lahela.”
Bryce ignored Jackie, and stretched out his arms. “This calls for a group hug.”
“No,” Aurora deadpanned.
“You’re a part of the gang now, Aurora,” Sienna said. “We hug it out.”
Everyone crept in on Aurora, pulling her into a very tight group hug. After a few seconds, she spoke up, “So how long do these group hugs last?”
“Just enjoy it, Emery.”
A few seconds later, everyone untangled their limbs and stepped back, giving each other personal space.
Naomi clapped her hands together. “Okay, everyone get comfortable. We’re doing face masks and tequila shots!”
While everyone was settling in and getting comfortable for the rest of the night, Naomi felt her cell phone buzz a few times. She dug into the pocket of her sweatpants and pulled it out. She had 3 new text messages, all from Ethan.
Ethan: Naomi, usually I would never text, but I figured if I called, you might not answer. I just want to say I’m sorry. I never want you to feel any type of hurt or pain, and I especially never want to be the cause of it. My feelings for you are extremely complex yet, very simple at the same time, and I know it feels like I’m jerking you around, but that’s just because I’ve never been in a situation like this. I thought if I pushed you away, the feelings would go away, but that’s not the case. What I feel for you is all-consuming and all encompassing, and it terrifies me.
Ethan: Sorry, if it seems like I’m rambling right now. I’m writing this in a rush because if I think about it for too long, I might lose my nerve and backtrack.
Ethan: What I’m trying to say is I think I love you, too.
Naomi’s eyes widened at the last message. “Well fuck.”
Starting Afresh (Aurora x MC)
Book/Series: Open Heart
Main Pairings: Aurora x MC/Martha (f)
Summary: Now living under the same roof, Martha needs to move forward with Aurora once and for all.
Word Count: 1476
Ugh, so I’m missing Open Heart, okay? And super bummed that they haven’t made Aurora a LI (yet?). So I’m making my first brief dabble in OH fanfiction, eek!
Reviews and reblogs are hugely appreciated!
Tagging: @brightpinkpeppercorn @sceptilemasterr @bbaba-yagaa@edgydepressedchoicesthot@blightarts@princessstellaris@acidsugar0@taramitch96@sapphovonchat@strangerofbraidwood@noeschoices@queerchoicesblog@kennaxval@queerchoicesblog@mrsmontoya
“Aurora…”
The other woman turned as she reached for the door handle; a frown etched across her face. Dr. Martha Perry faltered. She’d never really known how to talk to Aurora Emery. Of course, she’d tried -feebly, she’d now admit- but not understanding the reasons behind the solid walls she slammed into with each attempt, frustration had turned to hostility. Looking back, she felt ashamed. It should have been obvious to her that the iciness was all a front, but the competition between the interns had clouded her judgement. There had been moments when they’d almost, almost clicked, but what little progress had been made mattered to Martha… she couldn’t blow it now.
“What? If this is about the other day in the supply closet…”
“It’s not,” said Martha, finally, realising that standing there gawping at Aurora like a fish gasping for air was not a good look. “I just wanted to… to talk. We’re housemates now, might as well make this a real new start. It’s not as if we started off on the right foot.”
Aurora’s scowl deepened, almost a reflex by now. It was never about helping her; she was simply a means for people to help themselves. But then… after triage, after the supply closet, and now being given a room away from the constant pressure of her aunt… perhaps she could almost believe that Martha was different.
“If you’ve got something to say, just…”
“I’ve been an ass- I’ve been a total ass. When I knew I was being sabotaged, you were the conclusion I jumped to, based on nothing. I’ve just rolled over and ignored it when the other interns… my friends… have been shitting on you. Not knowing all that you were dealing with isn’t an excuse. I’m sorry.” Martha held out her hand, an olive branch.
For a moment, Aurora stiffened, her lips pursed. And then she took Martha’s hand. The fingers were soft and pleasantly warm, the feel causing a jolt of electricity to surge through her whole body.
“Thank you. I know I pushed you away before I gave you a chance to be anything more than just another obstacle to fight through, so… I’m sorry too.”
Martha exhaled. She hadn’t been aware she’d been holding her breath. “If this is us starting over, I might as well…” Damn, why was this so hard? “I, well, I wondered if you’d like to hang out sometime. Just… you and me.”
“Why?” Aurora’s eyes narrowed.
“I dunno, to get to know you better, I guess?”
“But why…”
“Because I like you, okay?” Martha blurted, her cheeks flushing. She recovered herself quickly. “For you. Not because of your name or who you’re related to. You’re a great doctor; I’ve worked with you enough to know you’ve got a brilliant mind and a focus that makes you unstoppable. Look, I get that the competition is fierce, and I’ve seen it bring out the worst in people I thought I could trust. But it doesn’t have to be like that! You shouldn’t have to carry your burdens alone. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve only managed to keep my head above water because of my friends. You could have that. I… I want to be someone you can turn to.”
To Aurora’s alarm, she found her eyes grow wet. She turned pointedly away, afraid to talk lest her voice crack with emotion. All this time, her defence mechanism had been to distance herself from the other interns, her rivals. She was tired of struggling through alone, even if there had never really been much choice in the matter… she wanted to believe in Martha. God, she looked into that face and it really did feel like she cared. But Aurora had heard what they said- they didn’t even bother to hush their voices. ‘Princess Nepotism’. A hand on her arm made her jump in alarm.
“…Hey. There’s no pressure. Just… think about it.”
The gentle squeeze on Aurora’s arm was undeniably comforting. To finally be reached out to, as if she were a friend, or--… she didn’t want to step away from that feeling. But step away she did.
“I have to go.” As Aurora reached the door, she hesitated, glancing back to Martha. “Thank you.”
____________________________________
Martha stumbled through the door to the apartment, drained. It was days like this when she questioned whether she had it in her. She’d diagnosed terminal illnesses so many times before, but a child… surely, she’d be haunted by the looks on the parents’ faces for the rest of her days. She slumped heavily into the couch, too swept up in her emotions to realise that she had company.
“You look wrecked.”
Too tired to startle, Martha looked around. Of course. It was Aurora’s day off, and she’d be around the place as she always was on her day off, going over her cases, poring over medical journals… ‘day off’ meant little when expectations still ran high.
She responded with a dry laugh. “I’d pretend to be offended, but I think the exertion would finish me off.”
Aurora approached tentatively and sat down beside Martha. She studied her face with a frown. It wasn’t like her to crack like this. “I didn’t think the pressure got to you. Didn’t you solve an unsolvable case the day before your hearing?”
“I think you know as well as I do; you hit the top of your game, and everyone forgets that you’ve got to come down sometime. I work in a hospital, remember; when I have a bad day, I have a really bad day.”
With an understanding smirk, Aurora nodded. “Look, if it’s anything I can help with -research or anything… I’m used to being over-worked by now.”
“It’s nothing like that. But… thanks.” Martha tried to offer a grateful smile, but her lip just trembled. And then, there was a hand on her own, gently squeezing.
Martha struggled to hide her surprise at the touch, but she needn’t have worried; Aurora’s face said quite clearly that the action had startled herself. For a lingering moment, their eyes met. Curiosity becoming soft, affectionate… yearning? Then Aurora removed her hand and broke the gaze, looking pointedly away.
Had Aurora felt it too? Martha didn’t think she’d dare let herself hope that the young Dr. Emery could view her in anything other than a platonic light. She’d made the blunder of falling too hard for a girl who’d turn out to be straight enough times to entertain the idea, at least, not seriously. Hell, to be on the brink of friendship -after the struggle to reach that point- was blessed on its own. The last thing she wanted was to freak Aurora out when she was finally comfortable enough to open up, to trust. But something in that look made her wonder…
Aurora cleared her throat. Shit, had she noticed? She knew enough to know that Martha was about as straight as a femur that had been broken in three places, but that didn’t mean she was interested in her, not in a that way. But she cared. Truly, and in Aurora’s experience, that didn’t come along often, at least not without an ulterior motive. When she turned back, Martha was still looking at her, cheeks flushed.
“I didn’t say it the other day, but I guess now’s as good a time as any. I like you too. Dr. Perry. Reluctantly- extremely reluctantly, but there it is. I know you’re fairly set for friends, but I want to be someone you can talk to. I really… like you.”
Wiping her eyes, Martha smiled for real. Man, those walls were tough to break down. Those little cracks forming, though, they were so satisfying to see. How had she been so blind as to wait so long before making the effort? She could have been a friend; she could have felt this so long ago. “Thanks. I’d like that. If you’re sure… I caught an awful lot of ‘but’s there….”
Without knowing how she got there, Aurora found her face an inch away from Martha’s. She could just lean over and…
Lurching forward, she pressed her lips to Martha’s in a brief kiss, one that she could barely feel in the midst of the violent hammering of her heart against her ribs. She could barely comprehend the fact that Martha was kissing her back, reaching out to cup her cheek. Aurora had already pulled away, on her feet before she could see the tenderness in the face that gazed up at her.
“…Aurora…”
Facing away, Aurora spoke brusquely. “You’ve had a long day; I’ll let you rest.” She didn’t look back, offering just a sharp “sorry” before retreating to her room, where she might pretend that she hadn’t just royally screwed up, letting down her wall way too far.
Martha leaned back into the couch, dumbstruck. What, she wondered, what the hell just happened?
In short, Meredith is finally waiting for her train after one hell of a night at E. R. dealing with the subway train derailment emergency. Out of the blue, she spots a familiar face nearby: her medical partner Aurora. So she decided to walk up and have a long-awaited chat with her.
It was past dawn when Dr. Valentine finally left Edenbrook. She was exhausted: the night at E.R. drained every ounce of energy out of her body. She had to grab her fourth coffee on her way out of the hospital to drag herself to the subway station. A shiver ran down her spine at the thought of the subway train that derailed a few hours earlier causing all those victims. Jeopardising Rafael's life. When she saw him unconscious and vulnerable on the operating table, she felt a pang of terror at the thought of losing him but Bryce and Harper helped her to bring him back. That was close though, too close. Too close.
Meredith exhaled loudly and took the last sip of her coffee. As she looked around to find a bin, she spotted a familiar figure nearby.
Aurora!
Meredith threw the cup away and walked her way to the crowd of people until she stood beside her. Her partner was sitting on a bench, grabbing her head. The intern carefully placed a hand on her slumped shoulder, startling the Emery girl.
"Oh I'm so sorry, Aurora! I didn't mean to- I just saw you and..."
Aurora looked up at her with glassy eyes. Her mouth opened to say something but nothing came out.
"What a shift, huh?" Meredith grimaced, leaning against the wall for support.
"To say it was hell would be the understatement of the century" her partner commented grimly.
"Preach to that, girl. At least we survived it..."
"Yeah, sure..."
A certain kind of sadness and anger waltzed in the Emery girl voice when she laconically commented on her partner's words. Meredith took a mental note to try and ask about it later before saying:
"Oh look the train is here! Thank God, are you coming too?"
Aurora didn't answer, she just nodded and mechanically followed Dr. Valentine inside the train. They found two free seats it set into motion. After a moment of silence, the Emery doctor spoke again.
"Let's hope this one will take us home: after tonight I don't have enough energy to face another derailment"
She probably meant that as a joke to brighten the mood but the tiniest smile on her face didn't reach the eyes. Her face was numb, showing signs of severe tiredness and...Meredith couldn't wrap her fingers around what yet.
"Hey, I know tonight is a lot to process but...are you okay?"
It took a moment to Aurora to answer.
"Are you, Valentine?"
"I've had better days" Meredith conceded.
Dr. Valentine was pondering her next words when the awkward silence between them was suddenly broken by her partner again.
"I totally sucked, I could have killed someone tonight. Because...because I didn't know what to do and there were so many of them! Mirani roasted me and he was fucking right! God, how could I even be number one once? I-" Aurora started saying but was soon cut short by a bump on her arm.
Aurora turned immediately.
"What the hell? You punched me, Valentine?"
"I'm too tired to formulate a full speech so I decided to use punches whenever you say bullshits"
"That's not bullshit! It's...objective!"
"Oh c'mon! We all had a bad day today, you had a bad day and panicked during one hell of a rush but you recollected yourself-"
"Only thanks to you"
The Emery doctor diverted her eyes, shame and delusion written all over her face. Meredith noticed that and sighed.
"Aurora, it's not thanks to me. You did the tough part of the job. I'm just your partner, I help whenever I can"
"Still if it wasn't for-"
"Another punch?"
Aurora opened her mouth but kept quiet. After a moment she said
"What I mean is...thank you, Valentine"
"It was nothing, partner"
Aurora punched Meredith's knee.
"I call bullshit this time! You know how things work here: your fellows and partners wouldn't hesitate to throw you under a bus or stab you with a scalpel if it wasn't an actual crime to get to the top of that goddamn ranking. They see you in trouble? They let you drown in deep waters without a second thought!"
"Trust me, I know"
Dr. Valentine lowered her eyes and frowned. Her partner felt a pang of guilt for her last comment: she remembered that Meredith said something about "realizing who sabotaged her". Stupid self! Say something, now!, she thought. She cleared her throat and added:
"My point is...this is what most do here, exceptions are rare. And you're one of them"
Meredith met her gaze. Exhaustion finally showed.
"If I win, I want to win fair and square. I don't want to become a doctor sabotaging or hurting others in the process. If I get that fellowship, it's because I deserve it. If I don't, I want to believe the lucky winner truly deserves it and will do their best for this place, for these patients. That they will be better than me and it will be okay. It's not just a competition, we're not in school anymore, right? I know you feel the same way"
A tired smile formed on Aurora's lips.
"I do. Despite what most think"
Meredith took a deep breath and spoke again.
"I know we got off to a rocky start and I sincerely apologize for giving you even the slightest impression that I thought you were at the top because you're Dr. Emery's nephew. I want you to know that such thought has never crossed my mind. Not even once. I respect you: you were first because you deserved to be. And to be honest, I understood why you were so relieved to fall behind"
Aurora gaped at her. Since she entered the competition, nobody has ever spoken to her like that.
"I'm not your enemy, Aurora. Can we start over?" she extended one hand. "Olive branch?"
The Emery doctor was taken aback. She looked Valentine right in the eye but couldn't find any sign of deception on her partner's tired face. She seemed genuine, painfully genuine. So she nodded and shook her hand. However, after a moment, she asked shyly:
"Why are you doing this, Valentine?"
Meredith gave the Emery girl the brightest smile she could manage.
"Because we're partners, Aurora. And partners have each other's back. Who knows. one day we may be even friends" she squeezed her shoulder.
At that moment, the train started slowing down to a stop. Meredith spoke again.
"This is my stop"
Since she kept falling back to her seat whenever she tried to stand, Aurora helped her and with a little bit of luck and some shared giggles, Dr, Valentine finally stood. Before getting off the train, she turned towards the fellow intern.
"Thanks, partner! Now go get some shut eye,we both need it...but please remember this: you're never alone. Ever! Okay? Oh and please call me Meredith. Night, Wonder Woman!"
A hint of a smile appeared one Aurora's exhausted face as she waved Meredith bye. It still lingered on her lips as she stood in front of her flat's door.
You're never alone, Aurora. You're never alone...
Happy Hour (Aurora x F!MC)
Pairing: Aurora Emery x F!MC (Dr. Jade Zia)
Word Count: 1,166
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Description: It’s been a tough day at Edenbrook-- a day of losses-- and Dr. Jade Zia needs to unwind at the usual watering hole. However, what’s unusual is who is there for the first time ever: the stone cold Aurora Emery.
Author Note: I think I’ve fallen in love with Aurora and we don’t even know for sure if she's a LI. No regrets. She needs more love in this fandom. Thank you for reading! Masterlist is found on my blog bio.
“Yeah, I just need some more time to unwind,” Jade says, raising her half empty glass to her roommates. “I’ll be at the apartment in a bit.” They smile and nod, knowing—if anything about the emergency after-shift bar session she called and venting that happened about the day was any indicator of how much she needed a drink—that this was needed. Long overdue. A quick wave and they’re out, ready to study in their beds and to wind down—only to do it all again tomorrow.
Jade sighs and slumps for a moment, strands of her black hair escaping her bun, the weight of the world heavy on her shoulders. Even the booze can’t numb the pain of losing a patient or delivering bad news after bad news….
“Ugh…” Jade mutters, then lifts her head, the colored lights lighting the people in the bar. Some dance, most sit, cradling their drinks… but one person catches her attention, alone at the end of the bar. Aurora Emery. How long has she been there? She’s never seen her here before. But… she bites her lip. She heard rumors of Aurora’s patients. Just about as bad as her day.
Does she want to vent or…? Jade watches Aurora push back her hair behind her ear, then sip her wine. For a briefest of seconds, they hold each others gaze, Jade’s heart skips a beat, and then Aurora stares down into her wine, shifting on the bar stool. She should leave her alone—but—
Jade stands and makes her way, taking the empty seat next to her. Aurora, doesn’t look up, but she spins her glass, a small smirk curving on her lips. Jade looks at the bartender, feeling Aurora’s warmth, out of her scrubs and coat and in pants and a blue blouse, arms exposed, looking every bit professional even out of the hospital. She’s never seen her like this.
Jade inhales, then slightly turns her head to look at Aurora’s profile, noting how she observes her from the corner of her eye. “I’ve never seen you here before,” Jade says, raising an eyebrow. “Tough day?”
There’s silence—and Jade’s already resigned to the fact that if she doesn’t want to talk, she can still sit there in silence. At least Aurora doesn’t have to be alone. It’s not like the bar is only for her to sit at. In fact, Jade’s ready for this—until Aurora speaks, a playful wryness to her tone. “Hmm… how’d you guess?”
The lights reflect in her eyes when she fully turns her head to acknowledge her, as if seeing her for the first time, truly. Not as a competitor. Not as a coworker. Not as worthy opponent. But as Jade. And Jade sees that too, unblinking as they look into each other’s eyes. Aurora chuckles, “Cat got your tongue?”
And Jade laughs, blushing under the low light. She sips her drink, savoring the sharpness that settles on her tastbuds. “Sorry,” Jade says, pushing back some of her own hair. “I’ve just never seen you out here. You don’t seem like the type to drown your sorrows in some dive bar with your colleagues.”
Aurora snorts, sipping her wine, slowly shaking her head. Jade notes the shine of a gold earring when her head goes back, neck a perfect arch, half of the wine disappearing. “When you have a day like I’ve had,” she starts, holding up the glass, inspecting the wine. “You give in and allow yourself to be exposed to cute nosy coworkers.”
Cute? Jade bites her lip and taps her glass to Aurora’s, cheeks impossibly warm—and not from the shot of tequila and whatever fruity drink Sienna convinced her to try. They sip in their toast, but Jade finishes first, still processing Aurora’s words. “So, I’m cute, huh?”
In a flash, Aurora almost chokes on her wine, eyes bulging as she coughs. “Uh, I meant—”
Jade smirks, playfully pushing on her arm, skin warm and soft. “It’s okay. I think you’re pretty cute too.”
Aurora’s smile isn’t like her usual ones, softer around the edges, twisting her body in the slightest to face Jade fully. One hand lingers on the bar, bracelet shimmering, eyeing her carefully. She seems to appraise her, taking in her outfit—Jade’s glad she isn’t wearing that grey shirt and jeans combo—and nods. “Well… that’s certainly good to know.” Her words are slow, careful. Hair rises on Jade’s arms and there’s a desire to kiss her, maybe—but she reels in the urge. This isn’t Jackie or Bryce or Rafael… or Ethan… this is Aurora. Closed off to the world until now, her guard coming down with each sip.
“It is?” Jade perks up, smiling wide. Aurora shakes her head, snickering.
“It pays to be attractive in the world, I know you’re smart enough to know that.” Ah, a little undercut and deflection, but Jade accepts it, turning herself to face Aurora fully. “So. You came here because you thought I needed to vent about my day.”
“No,” Jade says, not resisting the urge that overcomes her. She takes Aurora’s hand, offering a firm clasp. Aurora tenses, eyes widening. “I came here because you needed a friend.”
A friend yet… Aurora relaxes as the shock of their touch, a bolt of electricity, courses up Jade’s arm and to her heart, setting it into overdrive. Jade’s about to let go—she can’t push it—but Aurora smiles, shifting her touch, letting her thumb run along Jade’s knuckles, eyes drifting to their hands touching for the first time.
“Friend, huh?”
Jade bites her lip, face bright red. Yet, she still smiles, giving a squeeze to Aurora. A comfort. A connection. Something to break down her walls, bit by bit. And it starts with the touch of a hand. “Yes. To start.”
Raising an eyebrow, they release hands and Aurora sips her wine, bemused. “To start, hm?”
Jade crosses her legs, putting on an air of confidence, even if she’s ready to vomit. This is Aurora Emery. There’s certainly been a certain kind of chemistry that simmered between them… but now…. “If you’d like, I believe there can be more. If you want, of course. But being a friend rather than rival is preferable, don’t you agree?”
A chuckle escapes her lips, gloss shining when she laughs, lips curved into a beautiful smile, Aurora somehow looking younger, more relaxed. “I agree. And yes…” Aurora taps her foot against Jade’s leg. “I believe there can be something more than friendship, in time. I’m a busy woman and I would like to get to know the people I choose to let into my bed.”
Jade grins, heart hammering out of her chest. “Fair. Why don’t we start that tonight? The getting to know you part of this?”
Now Jade holds up her glass for a toast, and Aurora taps her glass to hers. “I’d like that, Dr. Zia.”
“Call me Jade.”
“One step at a time.”
