Writing wrap-up and goals for the new year

2021 in Review

January through August of 2021, I did quite a bit of writing on both my original fiction projects and fanfics, but I had no way to really account for what I'd written. When a friend shared that they'd been tracking their daily writing through a spreadsheet, I thought... why not? I wanted to try to build writing into a daily habit, and this was a method I hadn't tried. So, in September, I started tracking. I specifically didn't create any goals beyond "do writing things" - editing, worldbuilding, and any other writing activity on ANY WIP - because I wanted this to be about the habit, not the result.

Four months in, it's worked better than I ever could've hoped. A side benefit is that I get to see how much I actually write. I only had 12 days out of the past four months where I didn't do some sort of writing activity, and my wordcount totals (including NaNo) are satisfying:

A big discovery for me was that hopping between fics - both original and fanfics - was necessary for me to keep my daily momentum. NaNoWriMo, though giving me a big bump in my original fiction wordcount, was draining in a way the months before it hadn't been. I actually wrote *more* words in October than I did in November, but the lack of switching up WIPs in November made writing feel like a chore by the end of the month. In December, I went back to my method and am much happier for it, even if it means finishing a single WIP will take longer.

I'm glad I tried NaNoWriMo at least once, but it's not for me. And that's ok!

2022 goals

Keep up my writing habit. As noted above, I finished 2021 strong, and I think I've found a sustainable method to carry me through 2022.

Finish Truths Half Told Beget Lives Half Lived - As part of my new method, I managed to get back to writing my Captain Rylen x OC romance in the Dragon Age fandom. I posted the first chapter of that fic on Dec. 25, 2016, so it's past time I finished it!

Complete the first draft of the first book in my original fiction fantasy/adventure series. I'm currently at 72k words (of expected 120-150k), and things are moving along!

Begin the second book of my fantasy/adventure series.

Begin writing a new original WIP. I'm considering my sci-fi/adventure/romance series, my Victorian swashbuckling ladies series, my urban fantasy/romance novel, or my stand-alone romance novel. We'll see which one wins out when I'm ready to start on a new writing project.

Write out the the Jaws of Hakkon arc for my long, long fic, The Revelation of All Things. You may have noticed in the image above there was some tiny progress on that this year. May 2022 bring much more and maybe even posting, too!

Work on any lingering fanfics. I have a couple of other lingering series/fics (including my Harry x Ryder fic), that I'd like to spend time on in 2022.

Allow room for inspiration to strike. Having too-rigid guidelines has always tripped me up in the past, so I want to go into 2022 being open to throwing all these goals out the window if inspiration strikes elsewhere.

I have a bunch of little things that I want to get to eventually, but these are the main things. I think I'm finally in the right head space to get through some of these (and to be okay with it if I don't).

sorry this took me so long, i was waiting to have time to actually dive into doing full birth charts, but here they are, all my MCs full charts, designed by yours truly

i also have unreleased MCs that i did, so this was super helpful in deciding on personalities for them, so thank you! and if youre curious, i can drop them, but this is already brutally long

but basically, i started using this site a while ago when assigning sun signs and original birthdays, but i updated and added other signs using this site since its the one i got my birth chart from ages ago and it goes super in depth, and has dates for like saturn and venus and everything

as for my process, there were a few parts to it, so ill list them out

read through suns and decide on one

do the math on birth years based on age during their li season

use the dates on the site to figure out which signs were active during sun timeframe for other planets, like mercury, venus, etc

read through mercury, venus, etc, decide on which part of the sun timeframe they fall in

solidify signs for mercury, venus, etc, and general birthdays

put a few dates into natal chart and mess around with moon signs until i find one that fits

find a rising that fits without putting time in natals cuz that’s way too much effort

and ta da! finally done

and i know i did a shit job of explaining this, but if you have any specific questions, i can prolly answer them at least a little better lmao

yikes... it gets harder every year to find art for every month. you'd think going to art schoolwould help. but now my time is taken up by weird stuff like teeth corn. teeth corn is certainly art, but i like to show personal stuff if i can, and anyway i had lots to choose from for december.

some chatter below the cut!

January: some dragons from my flight rising lair: Coruus and her copycat charge, Baltazaar. not pictured: his charge, Warden, who is actually a ward and not a warden. this charge-chain was born through me winning a dom raffle prize of a guardian breed change scroll and a nocturne egg titled "don't talk to me or my charge or my charge's charge ever again" and now they're part of a big happy poor starving suffering family.

Feburary: a composition for painting class that had to involve at least ten "objects", the letters A-Z, and the numbers 1-9. i made an "HD" version of a much more stylized piece i'd done a while back, though i also changed/added/removed some dragons. i should post the original sometime.

March: Fern the golden flower faun, one of my dappervolk pets. the dappervolk beta was such a great experience this year - it changed and improved so much over the months and i can't wait for it to come back for official launch!

April: a bust doodle of Kapari, a character whose design i still haven't really nailed down. disciplined and suave, he's the owner of a large trading company in Cyreneas who knows his strengths and isn't afraid to get what he wants. he tends toward a controlling personality.

May: a diptych of phos and cinnabar from houseki no kuni (land of the lustrous). done as prints for ottawa comiccon and anime north in toronto. god that anime is pretty. painting phos's hair was tons of fun.

June: a redesign of a dragon of mine, Zalitz. originally from my flight rising lair, he's an OC in kenah now, a co-founder of the city of drakavel. he's lived like 4000 years so he's a big boy. he spent a long time as a skydancer before becoming a wildclaw, so both of those are reflected in his design, though i obviously don't want to use too much FR in my original work.

July: my dappervolk spiral imp, Bingo Machine, giving my avatar a four-hand pap. dappervolk's art and colours are #aesthetic and deeply inspiring, but really don't express well in my flat doodle style. i hope to pick up some painting tricks from studying their art!

August: Ashes in Eyes, my D&D tabaxi bard. i love her so much. this piece got a lot of love on tumblr back before i accidentally wiped my account, which made me pretty happy! i don't usually use warm/earthy colours so this was a fun departure and i think it turned out really well.

September: afterlife, a three-page comic done for my junior studio class. the assignment was simply to incorporate found text into our work. i enjoyed hinting at a lot of symbolism and a deeper story behind what was on the page, although very little was really said or shown.

October: anthro Rylen. his design was always human-faced but then he started living in a world where everyone else was furries and it got weird. apart from that i also defined his body shape better - in the original piece he was super curvy and while i really liked it, he kept telling me he wanted to be more obviously male presenting.

November: shacks the luxray, from my pokemon pearl playthrough. maybe one day i'll get around to designing the others in my party as anthros. ...maybe one day i'll get back to that playthrough. let's go threw me totally off track.

December: the royal crest from legend of zelda in geometric style. i did five of these pieces using various LoZ symbols for junior studio. by the end i kind of wanted to never look at a vector again. i'll get back to them eventually i'm sure, but now i'm burnt out on them lmao.

here's to another year of art! i can't promise myself i'll better or more art than this year, but as long as i keep DOING art things will eventually shape up.

Victor is 19 years of age, he has bright green eyes and auburn coloured hair. His face is covered in freckles, tons of freckles. His skin is also extremely pale. Most of his clothing is black and red, red because it's his favorite colour and black because, let's be real, black goes with everything. He doesn't go anywhere without his scarf, which is a gray colour.

He's shy and easily turned anxious, but once you get to know him he's a total sweetheart. He can be rude and sarcastic when he wants to though. He doesn't talk much unless he's around friends or his sisters. He argues with his sisters quite a bit, and they don't always get along but he knows they're always there for him to lean on and same goes the other way around. He's hard to anger but when he's angry he's hard to calm down. He holds grudges, but eventually forgives.

His birthday is July 5th, he's a cancer and fits the stereotype of his sign quite well. He's very emotional and sometimes quite a crybaby.

Rylen is 16 years of age, she doesn't have nearly as much freckles as her older brother or younger sister. Her hair is a dark auburn colour, like her brothers but a deeper shade of it. Her eyes are a more pale green colour. Her clothing consists mostly of purple and blue, with some black.

She's quite outgoing but is secretly extremely insecure which she uses her extroverted cover to mask over. She doesn't talk much unless she's around her siblings, and despite having many friends she still doesn't feel like she fits in anywhere. She enjoys drawing and is actually rather good at it. She thinks she's awful at it though. She'd rather keep to herself but if needed will talk to strangers.

Her birthday is August 27th she is a Taurus.

Kitty is 10 years of age and her actual name is Kana, but her siblings and close friends call her Kitty. There's not really a reason behind it it's pretty much just a pet name. Kitty dresses majorly in more pastel colours and loves dresses. Her hair is consistent with her siblings being an auburn colour and her face is covered in freckles. Her eyes are a darker shade of green. <Ignore the Halo above her head, I was considering that as a design element but I don't like it anymore and I'm too lazy to go get the drawing and erase it with my nonexistent eraser>

She is playful and childish but can be more serious if needed for a situation. She enjoys drawing with her sister but is more interested in writing and playing outside. She's rather easily angered and will throw a fit if you're mean to her siblings or someone else that she cares for. Ahem "she won't hesitate bitch". She is extremely easily confused and will sleep literally anywhere at any given time.

Her birthday is August 29th, she is a Virgo.
