Subjectivity
‘Where does my sense of self come from? Was it made for me, or did it arise spontaneously? How is it conditioned by the media I consume, the society I inhabit, the politics I suffer and the desires that inspire me? When I use the word ‘I’, am I using it in the same way as you, when you use it?’ Mansfield (2000, p. 1). These questions posed by Mansfield challenge me as an individual to think about who I am and the influences on my life and practice. As a creative practitioner I have chosen this image (taken by myself) as a representation of the subject and dream of a musician. I have been subject to my own experiences and they are present in my work and in the layout on my page.

Essentialism
‘Roughly essentialism is the view that categories have an under lying reality or true nature that one cannot observe directly but that gives an object its identity. In other words, according to essentialism, categories (such as ‘’boy,’’ ‘’girl’’ or ‘’intelligence’’) are real’ (Gelman 2003 p.3). I feel as though my work relates to this as it displays the type of person I am and identifies my creative ideas and thoughts as a musical practitioner. As creative practitioners we build on our identity and grow on our essentialism from the moment we are born. Art will always linked to its creator as essentialism occurs in the work of all artists.

Unconscious
“If you die you're completely happy and your soul somewhere lives on. I'm not afraid of dying. Total peace after death, becoming someone else is the best hope I've got.” (Kurt Cobain) There is so much that goes on behind the curtains of the individual that us as bystanders don’t see, the different thoughts and ideas that make or break someone. I like thinking on the fringes of reality and the outskirts of my mind. This is a conscious decision inspired by great artists and thinkers (my influences). I believe there is an art to thought. An art in understanding what lies under your surface, under your skin and in your unconscious. Freud speaks of this in ‘The Unconscious’

Overdetermination
‘"there are no limits to the determinants that may be present" in the consciousness of a human being. The human consciousness is, therefore, overdetermined.’ (The Interpretation of Dreams) “winners are not those who never fail but those who never quit” this quote is on an artwork of the infamous banksy. Banksy was an inspiration of mine growing up as a keen street artist, he shows how he manipulates society in a mocking way that sends a message of determination. His artworks display the deep impulse thoughts that are running in the back of his conscious, things we all think of but don’t speak upon.

Sensory Knowledge
Sensory knowledge is knowledge that is gained from the five senses, (sight, touch, smell, taste & sound) as opposed to the knowledge stored in one’s brain. (Howes 2005 p.27) the work we produce as individuals comes from past times and things personally experienced by us which to my understanding is sensory knowledge. I have provided a link to the triple j unearthed page of my band. These songs contain personal thoughts and ideas that have been personal experiences and outcomes where I have been able to learn from on the way. I feel as this may tie in with creative identity as my sensory knowledge helps to shape my creative identity.

Creative Influence
‘’Who do you think you are?’’ The strangeness of putting this question to God comes from the fact that it is a question that should properly, perhaps only be asked of another human.’ (Bennett and Royle 2014, p. 151). I am a combination of different things; my environment, my entity and those who surround and influence me. My own work positively expresses the ideas of those before me. The example given shows Eddie Vedder, lead singer of pearl jam play the song better man, as he stops singing the crowd continues the first verse and chorus back to him. This identifies the positive direction this creative practitioner has on the individuals he may influence.

Authenticity
Along with other artists my authenticity is shown through my work. each piece is based on an experience and a past time. Derbaix and Decrop (2007, p 75) ‘For Camus (2001), an actual culture of authenticity only emerged in the seventies. This emergence may be explained by three major factors: nostalgia of the past and of elsewhere, the quest for references, meanings and truth (Benjamin [1936] 1973) and the need for singularity.’ I have chosen the song ‘when im gone’ by rap artist Eminem as a representation for authenticity. The lyrics used in eminems songs show his vulnerability and authenticity through the experiences and past times he has endured being the back bone to his originality. The artist is then left as an open book.

Creative Identity
Creative identity is essentially a style that is particular to a certain creative practitioner and something that separates them from others. The music I play is of the rock genre (displayed through song provided) just because I play music of the rock genre doesn’t mean it is the same as the music of Led Zepplin. Our creative identity helps shape who we are and the creative aspect of our lives. Led Zepplin may be an influence of mine but the style of the band is so defined to them that no two people will ever be the same. “Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are”.(Kurt Cobain) we are all different and the way we portray things shows who we are and our creative identities.

Fractured Identity
Fractured identity refers to the way in which an individual identity can be split into different/multiple personalities. (viewed on the 10/03/17 during subjectivity lecture) the example given is the trailer from the 2016 thriller film ‘split’ written and composed by M. Night Shyamalan. The film tells of different identities undertaken by the one individual. “The broken are the more evolved” this quote from the film gives us as the viewer an understanding of the different thought processes that one might think of where we may not see. The film challenges us as the individual to broaden our horizons and think about what we would not normally dare to think of. Fractured identity is again shown through Kurt Cobain as he tells of the sad life he lives where as we see the rock star that plays the songs we all love.

Social Identity
Social identity is the way in which we are viewed in society. (Barker 2007 p219). I have chosen the song ‘somebody that I used to know’ as a visual representation of how people change and how we once were viewed can be different as time goes on. The visual of the video is a representation of how the individual is fading and how we can be depicted in certain ways. I also feel as though when the individual is being painted in the clip it demonstrates how we cover up to hide our imperfections showing the pressure of our social identities.
