De neocolit – chiar dacă mai puțin prezente în mintea publicului larg – sînt contribuțiile decisive ale unor etnici germani la evoluția literelor și artelor autohtone, de la Oskar Walter Cizek, critic de artă de anvergură, sprijinitor al avangardei românești din anii ’20 ai secolului trecut, pînă la un muzician ca Wilhelm Berger sau la scriitori ca Wolf von Eichelburg, Eginald Schlattner, Oskar Pastior, Herta Müller, ca să nu pomenim decît cîteva nume. De neocolit este uriașul patrimoniu de cultură și civilizație lăsat, în Ardeal, de minoritatea sașilor în cei 800 de ani de conviețuire cu noi. Să amintim și că primul profesor de sculptură din țară (Karl Storck) a fost un neamț născut la Hanau, că pe profesorul de la București al tînărului Brâncuși îl chema Hegel, că ambianța modelatoare a pictorului Ștefan Luchian a fost școala müncheneză.” (Andrei Pleșu, articolul S-a rezolvat! „Mulțumită contactului meu cu atâta barbați însemnați ai Germaniei și primit în cercurile politice din Berlin, am avut fericita ocaziune și putința de a-mi îmbogăți mintea cu ideile reformatice de atunci care inspirau înaltele inteligențe al Germaniei. Da, universităței din Berlin, a doua mea mumă, universităței Frederica Wilhelma, da, esemplului ce mi-a dat amorul pentru patria germană și pe care l-am găsit în toate păturile societății germane, fie nobilime și fie burgheză, datoresc eu amorul pentru patria română și spiritual liberal care m-a însoțit în toate actele vieții mele” - spunea Mihail Kogălniceanu (Familia 48 / 1 decembrie / 13 decembrie 1891, cuvântare la 25 ani de la întemeierea Academiei Române).
Primul director al Conservatorul de Muzică și Declamațiune, înființat în anul anul 1864 la București, a fost Alexandru Flechtenmacher (n. 1823 la Iași - m. 1898 la București), fiul unui jurist sas stabilit în Moldova.
Unul dintre profesorii și directorii acestei instituții de învățământ a fost Eduard Wachmann (n. 1836 la București - m. 1908 la București), provenit dintr-o familie de origine germană. (D. Wachmann ne-a făcut o serie de concerte simfonice. Directorul conservatorului nostru de muzică este cel dintâi care a avut la noi curajul să ne dea audițiuni clasice de mare orchestră. El a avut să se lovească de mari piedicie în calea sa de bravură; dintre acestea, pe lângă greutatea de a deștepta la un public prea primitiv interes intelectual înalt, cea mai grea piedică i-a fost lipsa de elemente serioase pentru compunerea unei orchestre (...) Cu toate acestea, d. Wachmann putând să facă prea puțin ca succes artistic, a făcut ce a putut ca succes popular. Și astăzi grație ostenelilor lui meritoase, publicul nu mai privește afișul unui concert simfonic cu aceeași lipsă de interes cu care oamenii sănătoși privesc reclamele hapurilor de cantramină – scria Ion Luca Caragiale în Epoca din 11 decembrie 1896. Eduard Wachmann a fost fiul lui Ioan Andrei Wachmann (n. 1807 la Budapesta - m. 1863 la București), compozitor și dirijor, cel care a înființat temporar la București în anul 1851 un conservator, împreună cu Ludovic Wiest ( n. 1819 la Viena - m. 1889 la București, a fost adus în anul 1838 la București de la Viena de către domnitorul Alexandru Ghica).
Un alt muzician de origine germană a fost Josef Paschill (n . 1877 la București - m. 1966 la București), considerat unul dintre fondatorii muziicii de orgă în România.
Constantin Meissner (n. 1854 la Iași – m. 1942), fiul unor profesori de etnie germană stabiliți la Iași, junimist, a fost profesor la Școala Fiilor de Militari din Iași, profesor și director la Școala Normală Vasile Lupu din Iași, inspector școlar pentru învățământul primar și normal, secretar general în Ministerul Cultelor și Instrucțiunii Publice, ministru, membru de onoare al Academiei Române.
Societatea Junimea din Iași, înființată în anul 1863, prin personalitățile reprezentative ale acesteia după cele scrise de Eugen Lovinescu, a avut o notă de mediu de formație intelectuală germană. Aceste personalitățI, după Lovinescu, au fost P. P. Carp (studii la Berlin și Bonn, a fost printre primii traducători din Shakespeare în limba română), T. Maiorescu (gimnaziul la Viena (Academia Theresiană), studiile universitare la Berlin și Paris, iar doctoratul l-a obținut la Giessen ), T. Rosetti (studii la Viena și Paris, doctoratul luat la Paris), M. Eminescu (studii la liceul german din Cernăuți și la universitățile din Viena și Berlin. „Cum să nu meargă el să studieze unde a studiat şi scris Schiller şi Goethe şi să vază lumea descrisă de aceştia cu atîta farmec ?” – scria Ștefan Cacovean, un apropiat al lui Eminescu în anul 1866 la Blaj și în anii 1868 – 1869 la București. Vezi Luceafărul 3 / 1905 ), Iacob Negruzzi (a făcut studii liceale și universitare la Berlin în perioada 1852 – 1863, în ultimul an a obținut doctoratul în Drept la universitatea din Berlin, Leon Negruzzi, fratele mai mare al acestuia, de asemenea a făcut studii la Berlin).
În Martie 1867 apare în Iaşi întâiul număr din Convorbiri Literare . „Se ştia cine se hotărîseră să publice această revistă; nu putea fi îndoială, că literatura germană va fi propagată prin ea” – scria Gheorghe Bogdan – Duică. (Luceafărul 9 / 1905).
Mite Kremnitz, căsătorită cu fratele soției lui Titu Maiorescu și stabiliți la sfârșitul anului 1874 la București, a fost persoana care a avut meritul, după cum scria Ion Slavici, „de a fi îndreptat luarea aminte a marelui public german asupra vieții noastre intelectuale.” Aceasta a publicat atât sub forma de carte, cât și ca articole în presa de limbă germană mai multe traduceri din literatura română, colaborând la aceste traduceri și cu regina Românei.
Un alt german, Carol Muller, înființează în anul 1895 numita Biblioteca pentru toți, prin care s-a oferit cititorilor români, la un preț redus, un număr mare de scrieri din domeniul literar și științific. După cum se scria în anul 1901 într-o publicație românească din Oradea despre ce a însemnat „Biblioteca pentru toți” pentru români, „sigur este că omul acesta va ocupa odată în istoria literaturei române un loc de frunte.”
Henri Stahl (n. 1877 – m. 1942), tatăl german, mama franțuzoaică, scriitor și stenograf, a fost decorat pentru faptele de vitejie de la Porumbacu, din anul 1916, cu Ordinul Coroana României. Din căsătoria cu o franțuzoaică au avut copii pe scriitoarea Henriette Stahl (n. 1900 – m. 1984) și sociologul Henri Stahl (n. 1901 – m. 1991, colaborator al lui Dimitrie Gusti).
Wilhelm Karl Knechtel (n. 1884 la București – m. 1967 la București), entomolog și zoolog, absolvent în anul 1902 a Școlii Superioare de Agricultură de la Herestrău, specializare în Germania și Italia, a fost profesor la universitatea din București și membru titular al Academiei Române din anul 1955.
German după tată a fost sculptorul Oscar Han (n. 1891 la București - m. 1976 la București), autorul, printre altele, a statuii lui Mihai Viteazul din Alba Iulia.
Ion Gheorghe Maurer (n. 1902 București – m. 2000 București, fiul unui profesor de limbă franceză din București de origine din Alsacia, mama româncă, a fost prim – ministru al României în perioada 1961 – 1974.
Rudolf Schweitzer - Cumpăna ( n. 1886 – m. 1975), bunicul acestuia, de origine germană din Elveția, stabilindu-se la Piteşti în anul 1860. Schweitzer a urmat studiile secundare la Piteşti şi superioare în domeniul picturii la Berlin. Prima expoziţie publică o avut-o la Ateneul Român în anul 1921, primind deosebite aprecieri din partea lui Nicolae Iorga. De-a lungul timpului, expoziţii cu lucrările acestuia au fost organizate la Paris, Stockholm, Praga („Părlit ai fost o viaţă – ntreagă, / Şi – acum, Maestre, tot pârlit, / De-n locul artei vindeai bragă, / Poate erai mai înţolit” – scria Aurelian Păunescu în anul 1966 într-o epigramă dedicată lui Rudolf Schweitzer - Cumpăna).
O parte din lucrările acestuia au ajuns în posesia Muzeului Unirii din Alba Iulia. În anul 2000, când s-au împlinit 25 de ani de la moartea artistului şi Muzeul Unirii a organizat o expoziţie cu lucrările acestuia, Gheorghe Fleșer scria: „Constituirea colecţiei se leagă de numele a două personalităţi ale Bisericii romano – catolice, preotul Gustav Müler din Piteşti şi Episcopul de Alba Iulia Márton Áron. Prieten de o viaţă şi model preferat al artistului, părintele Müler a fost întemeietorul colecţiei pe care a lăsat-o în împrejurări şi la dată rămasă necunoscută pentru noi, Episcopiei Romano – Catolice de Alba Iulia. La 5 mai 1978, Episcopul Márton Áron printr-un gest de o mare generozitate, donează aproape întreaga colecţie (101 lucrări din care: 19 tablouri în tehnică de ulei pe pânză, 45 de grafică şi două albume cu 19, respectiv 18 schiţe), Muzeului Unirii din Alba Iulia. În actul încheiat între părţi a fost inclusă o singură clauză: lucrările să fie trecute muzeului de unde să nu fie înstrăinate niciodată şi sub nici o formă.”
Înaintea Primului Război Mondial funcționau în România un număr de 30 școli cu predare în limba germană și cu 4.215 elevi. (Arhivele Naționale ale României, Minoritățile Naționale 1925 – 1931, 1996, pag. 501). Cei mai muți germani din localitățile urbane din România, conform recensământului din anul 1912, au fost în București – 3.415, urmați de cei din Galați – 427 și Brăila – 286. (Arhivele Naționale ale României, Minoritățile Naționale 1918 – 1925, 1995, pag. 646 – 649).
În mediul intelectual german, statul român și Academia Română înființează la Leipzig (Lipsca) în anul 1893 un seminar, considerat ca „institut privat” al Facultății de Filosofie din acest oraș, sub denumirea de Institut pentru Limba Română. Scopul acestuia a fost impulsionarea studierii limbii române, primul director al acestui institut a fost Gustav Weigand, cunoscut ca specialist în limbile romanice și profesor la universitatea din acest oraș.
În Leipzig a apărut și primul ziar în limba română numit Fama Lipschei, iar universitatea din acest oraș, înființată în anul 1409, avea în anul 1894 un număr de 196 profesori și 3.000 studenți. De asemenea, în acest oraș care avea o populație de 398. 000 în anul 1894, existau în acest an un număr de 100 tipografii și litografii și peste 700 de librării, orașul fiind numit și „centrul comercial de librărie germană” (Vezi Familia 35 / 1 / 13 septembrie 1896).
Printre cei care au studiat la Leipzig, au fost Moses Gaster, cu studii și la Breslau, doctor la Leipzig cu o teză despre fonetica românească și romanică, autorul unor scrieri în domeniul literaturii române vechi și literaturii populare române. A fost considerat „primul mare folclorist român”, este Mare Rabin al comunității sefarde din Londra în perioada 1887 – 1919, a predat și la universitatea din Oxford, în cursurile sale făcând adeseori referire la folclorul românesc și s-a implicat în convingerea mediilor politice britanice pentru susținerea cauzei românești la încheierea Primului Război Mondial.
Lazăr Şăineanu, cu studii și la Paris, la universitatea din Leipzig a obținut doctoratul în Filologie și a fost autorul, printre altele, a scrierii Istoria filologiei române, lucrare dedicată lui Timotei Cipariu și a unui dicționar al limbii române, prima ediție apărută în anul 1896.
Cel care este considerat cel mai mare filolog român, Sextil Pușcariu, a studiat, de asemenea, la Leipzig, la acesta adăugându-se personalități ca Nicolae Iorga, Partenie Clinceanu (mitropolit al Moldovei), Irineu Mihălcescu (mitropolit al Moldovei), Dimitrie Gusti, Lucrețiu Pătrășcanu (printre puținii comuniști din ilegalitate cu studii superioare), Nicolae Mărginean (psiholog).
În mediul intelectual german au mai studiat:
Vasile Pârvan - specializare la Jena de un an (1904 / 1905), apoi la Berlin de trei ani (1905 – 1908), doctoratul luat la Breslau în anul 1908;
Anghel Saligny - studii la Potsdam, Berlin și Charlottenburg;
Simion Mehedinți - studii în Franța și Germania;
George Vălsan - studii la Berlin și Paris;
George Murgoci - specializare în Austria și Germania; doctoratul luat la Munchen;
Henri Coandă - studii în Germania, Belgia și Franța;
George Enescu - studii la Viena și Paris;
Nae Ionescu - studii în Germania;
Tudor Vianu - doctor în filosofie la universitatea din Tubingen;
Ion Barbu - studii la Gottingen, Tubingen și Paris;
Virgil Vătășianu (autorul scrierii Istoria artei feudale în Țările Române) - doctorat la Viena;
Silviu Dragomir - studii la Viena;
Constantin Rădulescu - Motru - studii în Germania;
Ioan Nestor (arheolog) - studii în Germania;
Onisifor Ghibu - studii la Budapesta, Strasbourg, Jena, la ultima universitate a obținut titlul de doctor.
De amintit faptul că primul tratat dedicat exclusiv originii romane a poporului român a apărut în anul 1587 în mediul german, la Wittenberg, autorul acestuia a fost umanistul german Petrus Albinius Nivemontius (n. 1534 – m. 1598). Acesta prezintă și opiniile privind această origine ale unor erudiți ai timpului, cum au fost Silvio Piccolimini, Antonio Bonfini, Paolo Giovio, Martin Cromer, Kaspar Peucer.

The so-called Four Days Battle took place from 1-4 June 1666 (11th - 14th according to the new calendar) between the English and the Dutch during the Second Dutch-English War which lasted from 1665-1668.
King Charles II of England had divided command of the English fleet between the admirals George Monck, 1st Duke of Albemarle, and Prince Rupert. The latter was detached to the western English Channel with a third of the English fleet, as French intervention in the war was feared. He was primarily concerned with stopping the Dutch in order to protect the English trade routes.
On the morning of 1 June 1666, the Dutch fleet under Admiral Michiel de Ruyter anchored 84 ships, 4,600 guns and 22,000 men crew off Dunkirk. He hoped for France’s help and wanted to unite his fleet with the French fleet. Monck learned of de Ruyter’s presence and immediately attacked with his 58 ships. With a southerly wind, Monck, coming from the west, met the anchoring Dutch. Around 12 noon he attacked the southern rearguard of the Dutch fleet under Cornelis Tromp in a closed keel line formation. He could just cut the anchor rope and set sails. Until about 16 o'clock the Englishmen hit him hard. When the fleets approached the coast of Flanders, the British fleet had to turn away because their ships had more draught. This enabled de Ruyter and the Dutch vanguard under Cornelis Evertsen to intervene in the battle. During the rotation the English liner HMS Swiftsure was conquered together with two other ships and the Vice Admiral William Berkeley was killed. The Rainbow fled to Ostend, pursued by twelve ships Tromps. During the night, both fleets repaired their damage. Disabled ships were released. Admiral Cornelis Evertsen fell when the burning HMS Henry with her last volley rejected a Dutch attack and escaped.
Monck repeated his attack on the morning of 2 June. The fleets met on an east-west course, and Tromp pulled out of the Dutch line, not, as is often claimed, to gain windward position, but simply because he hadn’t seen the right signals. He got into trouble again and de Ruyter had to come to his aid. The order of the Dutch fleet disintegrated completely. Since the English had only 47 ships left, they could not take advantage of this situation. In the afternoon, the twelve ships that had followed the Rainbow in vain appeared on the horizon again. Monck, believing it to be a completely new squadron, set off in shock and hoped for the appearance of Prince Rupert.
On the morning of 3 June, Monck withdrew with 30 ships ready for battle to the northwest in the direction of the Thames estuary. The Dutch followed him with difficulty, and few fights took place. However, one of the largest English ships, the Prince Royal with 92 cannons, flagship of Admiral George Ayscue, ran on a shoal. She was handed over to the Dutch and burned. That evening, Rupert appeared and brought 20 fresh ships.
The next day both sides wanted to force the decision. Sailing east, the Dutch managed to break into the English line. During fierce close battles both sides suffered heavy losses, and finally the English broke off the fight. They had shot almost their entire ammunition - the stock was at 50 bullets per cannon. Vice Admiral Christopher Mings was fatally injured. The Dutch also left the battlefield as their lighter ships were badly damaged and they also had hardly any ammunition left.
One of the longest sea battles in history ended with a Dutch victory. England lost ten ships and 5000 men, including 1800 prisoners, among them two admirals (six ships were conquered by the Dutch). Holland lost four ships as well as 2000 men, among them an important admiral (and also vice admiral Abraham van der Hulst). How fierce the battles were, the report shows that some of the ships involved had received more than 1000 hits.  
The war did not end with this battle. The English could quickly make up for their losses, while the Dutch believed for a short time that they had destroyed the English fleet. Already on August 4, 1666 the battle followed, which is called St James’s Day Fight in English, and in which England remained victorious.

Einritzung des Namens auf dem Keilrahmen, oben. Henke war studierter Jurist und ein früherer Direktor der Rheinisch-Westfälischen Elektrizitätswerke. Hier war er von 1912 bis 1945 Vorstandsmitglied, von 1945 bis zu seiner Pensionierung im Aufsichtsrat. Privat engagierte er sich für die Bildende Kunst, was sich u.a. in seiner Funktion als Vorsitzender des Folkwangmuseums-Vereins von 1959 bis 1969 ausdrückte. 6) Bislang unbekannte Provenienz/en. 7) Luz scheint nach dem 2.
