Summer Season at the Grove Hall Roxbury Sunflower Garden with the Roxbury Sunflower Project and MPDC
Can you believe it!? Summer is almost over. Conversations will switch from swimming pools to school supplies, from sunscreen to scarves. I hope you have had an amazing summer. At the Grove Hall Roxbury Sunflower Garden there has been lots of hard work and lots of fun.
This Tuesday, August 27th, is our final event from 4:00- 6:00 pm at 639 Warren Street (at the corner of Warren and Crawford). There will be light refreshments, a collage activity, music and fun. Please join us and bring a friend.
Here's a recap of Roxbury Sunflower Project (RSP), Madison Park Development Corporation (MPDC) and "Make it Sensory" summer activities to date:
All ages and stages participated with "Make it Sensory"...
Each week, community folk enjoyed the making of beaded bracelets, coffee filter butterflies, hand prints, masks and more. New tables and chairs from MPDC allow us to set up shop in comfort.
Teens from the Greatest Minds stopped by and spent an afternoon making nature assemblages which Maria then embedded in resin. They will last forever!!!
There were butterfly prints...
and clay roses too.
Madison Park Development Corporation's Teens were a big help getting the Sunflower Garden weeded and watered. They also had some quality time with Maria making butterflies.
It was important for them to learn to recognize the weeds among the sunflowers...
Water is life!
To help with the watering on the site, Speak for the Trees gave us a water tank which they refilled weekly. We all learned how to use the spigot without getting drenched. Watering was done by hand!
In addition to bringing the water tank, Speak for the Trees staff Lilli and Jonathan helped us with weeding when they could.
We were lucky to have some volunteers. Although the gloves were oversized, our youngest volunteer, Nekeba was a champion helper. Her dad came along to help out.
We loved our shed, built by WORC2 but it needed a little something...
Decisions, decisions...
How about a beautiful Sunflower yellow coat.
MPDC teens enjoyed getting some paint on their hands.
Everything is better in yellow... Wouldn't you agree?
Well the closing chapter is tomorrow and we hope to see you in the garden for our final art making activities, refreshments, sunflowers and celebration at the Grove Hall Sunflower Garden at the corner of Warren and Crawford.
Abundant thanks for all the hands who planted, watered and supported this year,
Ekua Holmes for The Roxbury Sunflower Project and all of our partnering organizations: Madison Park Development Corporation, Martin's Park, Rose Kennedy Greenway, Speak for the Trees, WORC2, United Neighbors of Lower Roxbury Community Garden

Bowmore® and Aston Martin unveil first collaboration
let’s begin
1964 provides inspiration to showcase craftsmanship and innovation to unite Black Bowmore and the Aston Martin DB5
6 August 2020, Islay, UK – Bowmore® Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky and Aston Martin have unveiled their first collaborative creation; Black Bowmore DB5 1964. A striking concept which brings together an iconic whisky and a legendary car in a bottle of equal parts, featuring exceptional single malt and a genuine Aston Martin DB5 piston.
With only 25 bottles for sale, this exceptionally rare Black Bowmore DB5 1964 is a celebration of time; a definitive moment in history for both Bowmore and Aston Martin. It is also a celebration of shared values and passions; showcasing great innovation and invention.
A beautifully inspiring masterpiece; this unique, handcrafted vessel houses an equally exceptional single malt, Black Bowmore. Inspired by the past, but truly breath-taking in today’s world. The significance of 1964 is paramount. This represents a truly defining era of evolution for both Bowmore and Aston Martin.
For Bowmore, 1964 is arguably one of the most significant points in the distillery’s 240-year history. The arrival of a new boiler saw the distillery enter the modern age of distilling as coal fires made way for steam in heating the stills. It was the first distillation from this new boiler that produced the spirit which was to become the iconic Black Bowmore; a sublimely rich and decadent single malt, reflected in awe-inspiring deep darkness.
First distilled on 5 November 1964, over the years Black Bowmore has become one of the rarest and most sought-after single malt whiskies ever created. This latest release represents only the sixth bottling of this exquisite single malt. Since 1993, only around six thousand bottles of Black Bowmore have been made available, thus adding to the desirability of this iconic whisky.
David Turner, Distillery Manager at Bowmore commented “1964 represents a significant date in the modern history of the distillery. Not only a key moment in how we distilled our spirit, but perhaps even more significant as this very spirit went onto create Black Bowmore. These defining moments are fundamental to the history of Bowmore. This collaboration with Aston Martin has allowed us to once again showcase this iconic single malt in the most incredible way.”
For Aston Martin, this was the era of their most iconic car. Launched in 1963 to considerable acclaim, the Aston Martin DB5 is now widely regarded as ‘the most famous car in the world’, not least by virtue of its links to the world’s most celebrated secret agent in 1964.
On its debut the DB5 represented a subtle but important evolution over its immediate predecessor, the DB4 Series 5, not least by virtue of an increase in engine capacity to 4.0-litres. This of course made the DB5 that much more of a sporting saloon which, combined with its exceptional styling, helped it to become one of the most desirable and admired sports cars of its generation. Sir David Brown, the then owner of Aston Martin Lagonda and the man who gave his initials to the ‘DB’ lineage, said of the car: “I believe it is the essential character of the DB5, and its ability to perform perfectly in all conditions, that makes this car so intensely satisfying to own.” It is this relentless pursuit of power with purpose that still helps to define the appeal of Aston Martin today.
Marek Reichman, Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer of Aston Martin Lagonda, said: “This exciting new association with Bowmore gives us the perfect opportunity to celebrate a vital part of our star-studded history by combining the unrivalled appeal of the iconic DB5 with the cultured flavours of this world-renowned single malt.”
In keeping with a commitment to true craftsmanship, the Black Bowmore DB5 bottle itself is handcrafted by Glasstorm, a bespoke contemporary glass studio, based in North East Scotland. With over 50 years of glass design, sculpting and creative expertise, each bottle took up to one week to be complete, reflecting the continued thread of attention to detail and skill which defines this collaboration.
Black Bowmore DB5 1964 is presented in a handmade presentation box; itself a work of art. Inspired by the distillery’s coastal home, the deep blue colour and wave embossing evoke a true sense of place. Created from the finest string-grain calfskin, featuring a custom solid brass latch and hinges, plated with nickel, reflective of the DB5.
The partners are set to unveil a series of collaborative projects and products over the coming months and years, ranging from exceptional experiences to design-led product initiatives with the goal of offering fans of the brands, across a broad spectrum, the opportunities to connect with the partnership.
As world class luxury brands Bowmore and Aston Martin urge consumers never to drink and drive. Drink Smart® messaging will be integrated into all brand activations around the partnership; while the dedicated Drink Smart® platform ensures communication with legal-purchase age adults about making informed, responsible choices.

Anthony Seunarine and his father, Bobby, have been running London Cleaners, a tailor and dry cleaning shop inside the Loblaws Supermarket at Highway 2 and Liverpool Road in Pickering, Ont., six days a week for nearly 20 years.
The shop has become a second home for their customers and their extended family. They have so many customers that when they first opened the stores, they had babies in strollers, and their children are now in university, and they still come, Seunarine told Global News one afternoon.
They enjoy being here. It is a part of their house. However, they are now in danger of losing their home. According to Seunarine, Loblaws closed one of its two main entrances during the pandemic. Since then, it has remained closed.
The issue is that the entrance is also the same doors that Seunarine's customers would walk through, and with no more foot traffic, Seunarine claims that business has dropped by 70%.
They've had to rely on savings and RSPs to get by because they're so dedicated to serving their community, said Seunarine. He claims that his parents have had to sell their home in order to pay the rent. Despite their sacrifices, Loblaws, according to Seunarine, refuses to reopen the entrance.
According to Seunarine, they were told they could use this space however they saw fit. Loblaws, according to Seunarine, offered them signage in January to let customers know they were still open.
But it's August, and they still haven't received them, according to Seunarine. They understand the tenant's concern and have attempted to find a solution over the past few months, including adding in-store signage and promotion for this business, as well as support to unblock the external entrance to their store, according to the statement.
Those efforts have not yet resulted in a resolution. They are committed to working with them to find a solution. According to Seunarine, these efforts are insufficient.
They will lose their business if the entrance is not reopened, according to Seunarine. He claims it is an outcome that his family cannot even contemplate.
Seunarine explained how to reopen a door. They are a small business struggling to survive the pandemic, and they are hoping Loblaws will reconsider.

Review of CW Morse Paddles with weighted base
“CW Morse (cwmorse.us) makes a variety of inexpensive, 3D-printed Morse code keys. They’ve now added paddles for iambic keyers to their line. This review looks at one of their newest paddles, and reviews a bit about Morse code timing, standard (up and down) keys, sideswipers (cooties), Vibroplex bugs, and then Curtis-style iambic keying. This is a great key and can be obtained from cwmorse.us. “

WHYTE & MACKAY ANNOUNCE LATEST MODERN SPIRIT INNOVATION: THE WOODSMAN
The Woodsman aims to recruit younger drinkers into Scotch category
The Woodsman – a new contemporary Blended Scotch Whisky has been released by Whyte & Mackay. Perfect for up-tempo occasions, it’s an exciting new addition to Whyte & Mackay’s growing portfolio which promises to bring new younger drinkers into the Scotch category by giving traditional blend behaviours and flavours the chop.
The Woodsman’s release is the latest in a long-list of exciting announcements from Whyte & Mackay, following a surge in investment to boost their commitment to innovation and an increase in global marketing expenditure across its portfolio.
Just last week the Glasgow based producer re-launched its Highland Single Malt Whisky, Fettercairn, with four new expressions, alongside a complete overhaul of their Jura Single Malt Brand and a full rebrand and re-launch for Tamnavulin Speyside Malt.
The Woodsman has woodcraft at its heart – from its maturation process to its premium packaging.
It’s matured using a mix of freshly-built oak casks from Ohio, which gives it a hint of vanilla and spice and ex-Bourbon barrels double-scorched in Scotland for an extra depth, adding more vanilla sweetness and a hint of woodsmoke. This transatlantic partnership makes for an especially smooth whisky and gives The Woodsman a truly unique flavour profile for a blended scotch; crafted with younger brown spirits drinkers in mind. The tree-inspired bottle with debossed and embossed detail captures the spirit of the great outdoors and gives The Woodsman a stylish look and exceptional back bar stand out, especially with younger consumers looking for something different.
The Woodsman has an ABV of 40% and is the perfect whisky for mixing – bold yet balanced, rather than with a subtly-nuanced or overly-complex taste. Recommended serves for the new whisky include a Maple Syrup Old Fashioned, a Woodsman & Ginger Beer, or simply mixing with cola.
Steven Pearson, Global Marketing Director at Whyte & Mackay, said: “Whyte & Mackay is a company on a mission. We are investing globally in our current portfolio and are committed to innovation, with several new product launches planned over the next 12 months.
“The Woodsman is a real category disrupter and we’re thrilled to bring this exciting modern spirit to the market. Our research showed us there are younger consumers drinking across several categories but avoiding Scotch because they’re put off by traditional category cues.
We recognised this as an opportunity to tap into the continued growth in brown spirits drinkers and bring to market a blended scotch with a unique flavour profile and a rich and innovative production story. The Woodsman will add value to the category while standing out as a differentiated offering against mainstream promoted blends.”
The brand officially launched at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe’s Underbelly, with the Woodsman Tipi - a fully stocked bar complete with deck chairs, chesterfield sofas and a crackling TV-campfire. Nestled in the leafy George Square and open throughout August, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a sip of The Woodsman while taking in the electric atmosphere of the festival. Within one week of the bar opening, Whyte & Mackay secured 46 new stockists for The Woodsmen with many more due to come on board.
The Woodsman 70cl will be available in selected bars and retailers throughout the UK, with an RSP of £28. Additionally, it’s available on Amazon.co.uk.
For more information visit: www.woodsmanwhisky.com or contact your local Whyte & Mackay representative to discuss listings.

Weighing The Evidence In Market Breadth
A look at the Equal Weight S&P 500 has something for both the bulls and the bears.
A hot, and much debated, topic of late in equity market circles is the issue of market breadth. As a refresher, breadth refers to the level of participation among all stocks in the market, i.e., how many stocks are advancing vs. declining. Many market watchers contend that breadth is an important component when determining the well being of the stock market at a given time. Indeed, various, measures of breadth form the bedrock of our own intermediate-term risk model. After nearly 50 years of observing, we firmly believe that an accurate assessment of the market’s internals, or breadth, is key in determining the true state of health of the broad stock market. Specifically, we view a relatively large number of advancing stocks (i.e., good participation) as desirable, and often mandatory, when considering a healthy, sustainable rally.
The challenge therein is selecting the right measures, and accurately interpreting said measures. That’s because there are about as many ways of measuring the level of stock participation in the market as there are stocks in the market. That’s why the breadth issue has been such a hotly debated topic of late. A solid case can be made in favor of good breadth presently (e.g., A-D Lines at highs, broad indices near highs, etc.) or against it (e.g., non-confirmation of stocks above moving averages, waning relative performance among equally-weighted averages, etc.).
Where do we stand? We certainly see signs of waning breadth, most importantly among some of our key proprietary indicators. However, we don’t yet observe the dangerous “thinning” conditions that can threaten the long-term stability of the market.
In this post, we’re going to look at a couple angles pertaining to one of the aforementioned equally-weighted averages. Specifically, it is the Guggenheim S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF, ticker, RSP. As the name implies, an equal-weight average weighs each of the components the same. This is in contrast to popular cap-weighted averages, like the S&P 500, which place more weight on larger stocks. Cap-weighted averages can give one a distorted view of the health of the broad market at times if they are being unduly influenced by a relatively few number of stocks. On the other hand, an equally-weighted index can give us a better sense of the level of participation across the entire index.
Here, we look at a few of the pros and cons that we see presently in the equal-weight S&P 500 (RSP)
Pro
As recently as Tuesday, the RSP closed at an all-time high. Contrary to what anyone might tell you, an all-time high is not a bearish condition.
Con
Despite the all-time high, on a relative basis, the RSP has been trending lower vs. its cap-weighted counterpart since early December. This may be a concern given what we said about good participation been a required condition for a sustainable rally. Indeed, since the inception of the RSP in 2003, the stock market has tended to struggle when the ratio of the equal-weight RSP was trending lower vs. the cap-weighted S&P 500.
Maybe Con
You see us write often about the Fibonacci sequence, a mathematical series of numbers representative of repeated patterns in all walks of life, including financial markets. Typically, it is terms of Fibonacci Retracements, i.e., the magnitude of counter-trend moves consistently exhibited by market prices. We have also found the sequence useful in Fibonacci Extensions. These describe the magnitude of “extensions” often exhibited following complete reversals of market moves. For example, the RSP is presently hitting key Fibonacci Extensions following reversals of prominent declines over the past few years. Namely, they are the 161.8% Fibonacci Extension of the 2015-2016 decline and the 261.8% Fibonacci Extension of the August-November 2016 decline.
Now, these Extensions aren’t foolproof. That is, they are not guaranteed to stop the RSP in its tracks. However, we have found this tool reliable enough to be useful in practice, and to be a genuine concern in this situation. And we have found these Extensions, like Retracements, to be particularly effective when clustered together as these two are here.
So, there you have an analysis of current market breadth from the viewpoint of the equal weight S&P 500 Index. It is by no means an exhaustive look at the index, or certainly breadth in general. Like we said, there are untold numbers of ways to assess market breadth. Even, in the case of the RSP, there are numerous ways to assess its situation.
What is our conclusion? From the angles we looked at, like our more extensive assessment of the market’s internals, we don’t feel that a concrete conclusion can confidently be made either way. There are legitimate concerns, but certainly enough positives to consider as well. The best we can say is that the situation needs to continue to be monitored.
It is also a helpful reminder to always keep an open mind about potential market outcomes -- and to always consider the weight of all the evidence in one’s assessment.

A Growing Divergence in Performance for the S&P 500 Components
As we approach the final days of April, if you were to look back and try to put your finger on a theme for the last four months, one that you may select could be the growing divergence taking place in the S&P 500. What I'm referring to is the separation in performance that appears to be taking place among the largest of the S&P 500 stocks and the less large (smaller?) stocks that round out the index. Eyeing a long-term chart of the equity market there appears to have been a couple previous examples of this taking place, I'll get into those later. First let's look at present day...
Below is a chart of the S&P 500 Index (red line) and the ratio between the S&P 500 Equal weight ETF ($RSP) and the S&P 500 ETF ($SPY) which is cap-weighted. (yes I could have used the indices but I, no big reason why I chose not to. I just naturally gravitate to ETFs). I tweeted out this chart yesterday but I wanted to provide a little more commentary to what's taking place.
When the Black line is rising that is telling us that the Equal Weighted $RSP is rising more (or falling less) than the cap-weighted $SPY, and when it's declining the opposite is taking place. The latter is what we are seeing play out so far in 2017 with the largest of the S&P 500 components leading the charge higher.
Another instance we saw this play out was in 2012. During the initial bounce off the low in May we saw the S&P 500 begin making higher lows but it was being done on the backs of the largest components - as we can see with the black ratio line making lower highs from May through August. This divergence was ultimately responded with the market as a whole heading to new highs and the smaller S&P companies once again taking the lead.
The reason that we may attention to which parts of the market are leading and lagging is because it provides insight into the level of risk taking that's occurring within the market. It's commonly believed that the larger the company's market cap, the less riskier the stock (obviously there's plenty of examples of this not being 100% true all the time). When the market is trending higher many bulls want to see the more riskier portions of the market, such as small caps and mid caps show strong relative performance. And one way we can measure that is by looking at which parts of the S&P 500 are showing that relative performance - the largest weighted or the smallest weighted stocks within the index.
Here's another example a divergence being formed between the two differently weighted ETFs. Let me first say, yes this is showing the 2007 peak in stocks before the Financial Crisis. No, I'm not calling for a long-term top in the S&P 500, this is just another example of a similar divergence. As with many major market peaks, the are lead by a narrowing of breadth, also known as participation. This showed up in the lack of relative strength among the smaller S&P 500 stocks in June 2007 through the rest of the year. And we know how that played out in the next twelve months....
So there are two examples of a growing separation in the largest and smallest stocks that make up everyone's favorite equity index. One (2012) was resolved with the market going higher and another (2007) that led to a major bear market. Which one will we see? No idea, and there's no reason we must replicate either of these instances.
