I think the reason why August saw the 1970's when she was on the third rail was because the time slip was taking them both there, before pulling them back to the present, and slingshotting Jane slightly too far.
This makes sense to me, August and Jane weren't entirely sure where they wanted to be, but they knew they wanted to be together, so it was sending them somewhere together. They had more attachment to the present than to the 1970's, August was more attached to her time than Jane was to hers, and Jane had started to form her own attachments in the present such as with August's friends, so that was where they were ultimately pulled to.
We know that touching the third rail during a surge is how Jane got in the time slip in the first place, and we know that August couldn't entirely remember what happened afterwards, just like how Jane couldn't remember things, so August could've been in there too.
This makes the line "Her Girl, She Came Back" even sweeter. August thought she just dropped Jane off at her place and then that was it, that's what she took from the 1970's memory. But their connection was strong enough for Jane to follow her, for her girl to come back.

Do you collect different editions of books?
Tumblr media
I tend to only collect my favorites and never more than two or three editions. Though I think If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio is an exception because I have four copies.
The collector's edition of One Last Stop released recently and I had to snag one to match the RWRB edition. I absolutely adore the end paper art. Vanessa absolutely blew it out of the water! Of course, I had to pair it with my OLS fablebands and magnet from Rainbow Crate.

one of my friends asked me if I think Alex and August would be friends and my answer was obviously yes, duh.
but I do think Alex is more compatible with Jane, same as Henry with August.
their personalities are just so similar and I KNOW they would have the best time together the four of them.

This is so adorable 🥰
It makes me want a One Last Stop anime in this style, it would be so cute! Next time I reread this book, I'm imagining them like this.

Okay, I wanna talk about the best and most adorable moment between August and Jane in the entire book. It's the scene the story ends on, and it's absolutely perfect.
It is from the Collector's Edition though, so don't read below the cut if you want to read it for yourself first.
Spoilers for the Collector's Edition:
I adore that they proposed to each other with the train tokens!
Because, like, the train is what brought them together, and the tokens invite you to ride the train. So an invitation to the thing that brought them together is being used as an invitation to spend the rest of their lives together. That's so sweet!
But also, the train itself wasn't an entirely positive experience, especially for Jane, and especially at first. At first, it was an entirely negative thing, and yet, in the long term, it became something she looks back on fondly, simply for the fact that it brought her to August. They're saying "I'd go through it all again to be with you".
She even talks about how she feels like this was always destined to happen, even from when she herself was a child, decades before August even existed. She wouldn't have had things any other way.
Also, Jane started saving for a ring the minute she moved in, and she started thinking about marriage the moment she arrived on the platform. That makes the scene where she moves in with August even sweeter than it was, and it was already the sweetest scene in the main book. Because she was thinking the whole time "this is the start of the rest of our lives, we're gonna live together, buy a house together, spend our whole lives together, and it all starts here".
I also loved how the proposal happened right after Myla and Niko's wedding, and how that was what inspired Jane to propose the next day. Seeing a queer couple being happily married made her want the same thing, even more so than she already did. I love seeing queer people inspire each other. And it's fitting, because Jane was also an inspiration for them, due to her legacy from the 1970's.
Then there's the part where August tells Jane "I'd marry you with a piece of lint on a string, I'd live in a refrigerator box with you". Again, adorable, August really would do anything for her girl.
And the way she tells Jane that she doesn't need to propose right now, like she can't quite believe this is happening, like she still has trouble believing how much Jane loves her. And the way Jane just says "August", because she needs her girl to know how serious her commitment is and how much she loves her.
I also loved how private it was, I would definitely like to see how the other characters react when they break the news, but for the proposal itself, it was nice how quiet and personal it was. All of their best romantic moments are like that.
I also liked how August proposed back to her. Like, Jane is the more chivalrous one in their relationship, but every now and then you see August subvert that, like in the "I like being taller than you" scene where she makes Jane lean up to kiss her.
So while I will always want more OLS content, this was the perfect note to end August and Jane's story on. It affirms and solidifies everything that came before.

Love in August
by Jane Hirshfield
White moths against the screen in August darkness.
Some clamor in envy.
Some spread large as two hands of a thief
who wants to put back in your cupboard the long-taken silver.
