Taylor Swift praises Charli XcX in recent interview:
“I’ve been blown away by Charli’s melodic sensibilities since I first heard ‘Stay Away’ in 2011,” Swift says. “Her writing is surreal and inventive, always. She just takes a song to places you wouldn’t expect it to go, and she’s been doing it consistently for over a decade. I love to see hard work like that pay off.”

Tumblr media
[ID: The "missing the point" meme, now with a hybercube or tesseract saying, "Racism, ableism, misogyny, and classism are bad.", with the yellow A Sphere from the 2007 Flatland film staring at it in open-mouthed shock, exclaiming, "Wow!! Absurdist humor!!!" while the point flies over his head. End ID.]
Flatland a Romance of Many Dimensions spends literally half of its length doing nothing but criticizing systems of inequality.
The 2007 Flatland film is not exempt from the criticism of Flatland adaptations for brushing aside the political commentary to instead focus almost solely on the interdimensional theory.
You don't have to pretend that the absurdist comedy is scathing political commentary that forces the audience to think about the systems of inequality they themselves may be holding up without question. We all know it's not. It is possible to be both a comedy and scathing political commentary (See: Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions). But the 2007 Flatland film absolutely is not.
Edit August 20 2024: Ladd Ehlinger, the creator of the 2007 Flatland film, is disgustingly fucking racist and misogynistic. He is literally a proud conservative.
He made a political ad in 2011 that's literally so blatantly racist and misogynistic that youtube has literally restricted it so you literally cannot share the link outside of youtube.
Because it's that blatantly fucking bigoted.
I wish I could say I'm shocked but considering how terribly the 2007 film handles the themes of the original novel, I'm not surprised in the least.
The ad literally has Black men chanting, "give me your cash bitch so we can shoot up the street", while a white woman, with the face of the politician the add is against photoshopped over her, pole dances as a sex worker.
He runs a tumblr account so make sure you block him. His username is filmladd.
He's literally a racist misogynistic conservative.
For the love of all that's holy everyone please stop promoting this film immediately and make sure people are aware of exactly what kind of person produced it.
Edit August 26: Here's a link to the post I made that links to many places to read and listen to Flatland in various formats, all for free since the book is public domain!

saw a couple posts about today (Aug 9th) being Damian Wayne's birthday, but when I looked for a source I couldn't find one for the life of me. which of course sent me down a rabbit hole of batfam birthdays. so.
Official Birthdays
Tumblr media
*official as in they appear in canon and seem to be the most popular amongst fans. a bunch of these knuckleheads have multiple birthdays.
Cassandra Cain was born on January 26th according to Batgirl (2000) #33, though in that same issue she celebrates it some time in June because fuck her dad.
Bruce Wayne was born of February 19th according to the Detective Comics #494 fan letters column. Or April 7th, if you're looking at Star Spangled Comics #91 (Golden Age), or October 7th in Legends of the Dark Knight (2021) #10. Feb 19th seems to be the one that's used most often.
Dick Grayson was born on "the first day of spring" (aka March 20th) according to Robin (1993) Annual #4, or November 11th according to the Super DC Calendar of 1976, or a week-ish before Halloween according to Secret Origins (1986) #50, or December 1st according to Young Justice (2011) #20. March 20th fits into the robin origin story though, so we're gonna go with that.
Alfred Pennyworth was born on April 8th according to the Super DC Calendar of 1976, or August 16th according to Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Five #26 (side note: double colons in titles should be illegal). Neither of these are anywhere near real canon, but Injustice is supplementary material for a fighting game, and I'm always more inclined to go with a pure comics source. Plus this way he and Jason don't have to share.
Tim Drake was born on July 19th according to Robin (1993) #116. He's only got the one birthday and in that issue he totally forgot about it.
Jason Todd was born on August 16th according to Detective Comics #790. No information on when exactly his rebirth day is.
Barbara Gordon was born on September 23rd according to the Super DC Calendar of 1976. That's the only source we've got so that's what we're gonna use.
Unofficial Birthdays
Stephanie Brown, Duke Thomas, and Damian Wayne have never had their birthdays stated in canon, so most people have assigned them birthdays based on either their debut date (Duke) or some other criteria that is a mystery to me. Those dates (from what I have gathered) respectively are:
Steph: August 11th, Duke: August 13th, Damian: August 9th
Tumblr media
WHY ARE THEY ALL AUGUST??? THAT'S 4 (or 5 if you count Alfred) BIRTHDAYS IN THE SPAN OF A WEEK! WHY DO THEY ALL HAVE TO BE LEOS???
anyway that's the fruits of my afternoon/evening. if anyone has corrections with sources or dc canonizes a birthday in a comic I'm not reading (which is most of them, my comics taste is stuck in the 90s/early 2000s), let me know.

**** Yes, this movie has an overly long title. I had a hard time deciding whether to highlight it in bold or not.

The Year In Doom & Gloom
Doom & Gloom From The Tomb celebrated its 15th anniversary this year, which is crazy. But what can I say, I keep finding cool live tapes and keep feeling compelled to share them with you ... whoever you are! A lot of this website is just me talking to myself, hashing and rehashing and re-re-hashing various obsessions, getting impossibly niche about some of my favorite artists, trying to shine a light into the darkest corners of music history. But that makes it sound like it's a serious endeavor. Mostly, it's fun. I hope it's fun for you too. So, if you need to catch up, here's a tip-of-the-iceberg rundown of what we checked out over the last 12 months ... as always, thank a taper!

As a thank you to everyone who stuck with me through the Lost Media posts, I want to leave this series with this last compilation of song names and descriptions that could not be recovered. It turned out to be waaay longer than expected, so I will split II’s lost media off into a separate post. He deserves to be singled out and admired anyway🖤
The Aperture (Composition)
Upload date: before 8 November 2010 There is no description with this song, we only have a dead YouTube link and a date when the song was mentioned.
Ribbon wars (Composition)
Upload Date: Sometime before April 2011
“The human sense of deep contemplation, I believe, is like the opposite of a set of false teeth. You put it in before you go to bed, and take it out when you wake up in the morning. And it…”
This was a deleted video from Ves’s YouTube channel, and all we have remaining is the date and partial description. Honestly, I think about that analogy he makes way too much, and I wish I knew where he was taking it.
COVER OF THE WEEK: Animals as Leaders- On Impulse (Live Piano)
Upload Date: 08 November 2011
Tumblr media
I had originally thought this was the same On Impulse cover we already have, but the links and upload dates were different, leading me to find this description. Interesting that he’d play this insane piece twice? Especially live? Maybe he got comments about it being fake on the original 😂 2011 YouTube was pretty toxic tbh.
Stinkfist & H (TOOL) - Acoustic Guitar + Piano Cover
Upload Date: 03 December 2011 The original description was just names and instruments, plus the date and venue name. This was on Ves’s friend’s YouTube channel, and the video would have been filmed at the same music venue that Ves covered Parabol+Parabola with his friend’s band. The two credits were Baby Ves on Piano+Vocals and his friend on acoustic guitar.
Humbling River - Puscifer cover (Piano + Acoustic Guitar Cover)
Upload Date: 18 January 2012 Same instance as above. Ves was credited on Piano+Vocals, his friend was on an acoustic guitar, and they had a second backing vocalist.
Green Valley - Puscifer cover (Piano + Acoustic Guitar)
Upload Date: 18 January 2012 Same as the above, and the same three people are credited.
Corelia- Aviation (Piano cover)
Upload Date: 16 February 2012
Tumblr media
I’ve mentioned this description in another lost media post previously, since we do have the live version of this song that Ves performed.
Corelia- The Sound Of Glaciers Moving (Live Piano Cover)
Upload Date: 23 February 2012
Tumblr media
This would have been similar to the other peeled hand videos Ves’s uploaded in February 2012.
Periphery- Icarus Lives (Live Piano Cover)
Upload Date: 23 February 2012
Tumblr media
Another of the peeled hands videos uploaded in February 2012. “Back in the day” like sir, that video was uploaded august 2011 lol. I still have my fingers crossed that ST will tour with Periphery one day. It’d be the best ritual ever, and genuinely so fulfilling.
The Haarp Machine- The Escapist Notion (Piano Cover)
Upload Date: 03 March 2012
Tumblr media
This is one of those bands I’d thank Ves for introducing me to if I could lol. Very early ‘10s sounding prog metal, but still great. I can hear some influence on his earlier songs, esp songs like Fiend and the Mighty Caribou song.
Structures- / (Piano Cover)
Upload Date: 18 March 2012
Tumblr media
Well that’s a thought I never would have had about a band but okay, sure. Thanks for that mental image, Baby Ves 🤣
Red Seas Fire- The Recovery (Piano) Live at Random Church
Upload Date: 26 April 2012
Tumblr media
I had posted this description previously in this lost media post. I actually panicked a bit thinking I had skipped this song, because I couldn’t find it lol. This was recorded by the same friend he did the Tool/Puscifer covers with.
Veil Of Maya- Unbreakable (Piano Cover)
Upload Date: 04 May 2012
Tumblr media
On behalf of Ves, I apologize to all the fairies. He didn’t mean it, he didn’t know III yet.
Cobus Potgieter YouTube Band Project: Keyboard Audition ([Redacted Name])
Upload Date: 09 July 2012
Tumblr media
No video was ever recovered for this upload, but according to the (thankfully saved) transcript, he performed two songs or song snippets on his keyboard in an audition. Ves did not get chosen to participate in this project; a contributing factor was likely that he was living in the UK and the competition was only open to North American residents. I’ve attempted to clean up the transcript below (it was auto generated and YouTube did not agree with Ves’s British accent).
Hey, Cobus! My name is [Redacted Name]. I'm [Redacted] years of age. One thing I should definitely say before I do this is that quite clearly I'm English, and I do live in England, and I know you didn't reach the target that you needed in order to make the auditions international on Kickstarter. Well, I have decided to audition anyway, but by all means discount this audition based on the fact that I'm English. Obviously I'm willing to pay any necessary expenses like visas and flights and stuff because let's be honest they're ridiculously expensive. So, beyond that if you do decide to, you know, watch this. In terms of music, music is— a lot of people say this, but music is effectively my life, in the sense that I live in this small room in my house, you know? And I just sort of... do it every day, most of the time. I like a lot of different music, like I'm quite into a lot of what you'd describe as progressive metal, really. So, I like Tool, and a lot of, like, modern stuff like Periphery, but some other stuff you might be more familiar with that I like… I like things like Radiohead and more, in common with with your tastes. I like a lot of bands, A Day to Remember and Blue Wanted To [I can’t figure out what band “blue wanted to” might be]. You know, stuff like that— a lot of stuff, really. I'm auditioning to play in your band on keyboard or piano, probably piano if–if I had a choice, I like to do things with, you know, a bit of a— bit of a classical slant on it, but try and, I don't know— I don't mind classical music. Quite like classical music, but I'd like to maintain a certain amount of energy in a song, especially if you're covering it. Anyway, so the first song I'll be playing is My Life for Hire by A Day to Remember. [Music played from minute mark 00:03:07,050 to minute mark 00:05:45,150] There you go, that was—that was that, and hope you liked it and stuff for that [unsure if he’s generally mumbling/flustered about his performance or if the subtitles are absolutely butchered here]. The next thing you suggested doing perhaps an improvisation, which suits me down to the ground [is that a real saying? UK peeps please tell me] because that's how I do most things. I have a fairly good grasp of, you know, key signatures and that's all thing, but I–I like to improvise a lot, so I'll just pick a key, let's say F minor, and just sort of run with it and hopefully it would be like…yeah. [Music played from minute mark 00:07:31,050 to minute mark 00:09:42,738] And there you go, that was just an invitation… And I also apologize there appears to be some sort of lawn [mower? transcript had no word between lawn and operating] operating right outside my window. So I really hope that's not audible… So to end without going on too much, this is a bit cliche but it is true that to go to America, and, more specifically, to do something to do music, has always been the ultimate goal for me, which is why your project has appealed to me so much and why I've taken it upon myself to do this despite the circumstances, I love creating music. Please, by all means check out my channel. I've got various songs, I've made covers I've done, you know… I can't really express how much it would mean to me if if you were to accept me, but at the same time I perfectly understand if–if this whole thing isn't really valid, and I apologize in that case for taking up your time. Thanks a lot, Cobus. I'm [Redacted Name], and I hope you pick me.
Does anyone else have an immense desire to hug this man after reading that? Because I do 🥹😭🖤
Red Seas Fire- Epinephrine (Piano Cover/Interpretation)
Upload Date: 02 August 2012
Tumblr media
Ves’s love for this barely known band is still super endearing to me 🥹 I wonder if he ever thought about himself in the same way when ST was just starting out.
Amsterdam
Upload Date: 10 March 2015
No description with this one. All we have is a dead YouTube link and an upload date. This song was actually one of the few he deleted and did not set to unlisted. This is purely a theory of mine, but it’s possible that this song was deleted from YouTube and cannibalized to create a Sleep Token song, especially since this was only about a year before Sleep Token’s YouTube channel was created. It would explain the deletion versus unlisting, at least in my mind.
Corelia- Mute Swan (Piano Cover)
Upload Date: N/A
No upload date, description, or url for this one, it was only mentioned in another video of baby Ves’s.
