What Mercury in Virgo Means for YOU
What: Mercury in Virgo
When: July 25 - Aug. 14, then Sept. 9 - Sept. 26, 2024
Who’s Impacted: EVERYONE, but esp. Mutable Signs (Virgo, Gemini, Pisces, Sagittarius), and Earth Signs (Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo) Sun / Rising.
Takeaway: A two-for-one opportunity to get clear and get your sh*t together.
It’s audit time! On July 25, mind planet Mercury glides into analytical Virgo, urging YOU to dive into the details of your daily grind and fact-check your own thoughts. That’s not to say that Mercury in Virgo will see you gaslighting yourself; no, this transit is just obsessed with fine-tuning your ideas and plans, clarifying your writing, and organizing your daily activities. At least, that’s the best way you can work with the transit.
Mercury is the planet of communication, intellect, and reasoning, so its movements through the zodiac can bring noticeable shifts in mental energy and cognitive patterns. These subtle shifts can significantly help or hinder the way you think, communicate, and process information—should you let it. And tbh, you should absolutely let Mercury in Virgo help you out.
Mercury in Virgo Meaning in Astrology
Since Mercury rules Virgo—which means the planet not only loves being in the sign, but it also functions at its highest level— communication thrives during this time, as does clarity, logic, practicality, organization, criticism, categorization, assimilation, annnd efficiency.
You can think of this transit as having the ultimate editor at your disposal. Getting into the nitty-gritty details with precision and accuracy is 10 times easier. So, this time is optimal time for:
Line-editing your writing (be it novel, memoir, social media post, email, etc.);
Clarifying your conversations;
Streamlining your daily to-dos, and wishing you had more time in the day to tackle everything on your to-do list;
Organizing your thoughts, plans and ideas;
Developing a keen interest in the economy of language (i.e.: using abbreviations and/or bullet points in your communications.)
Getting critical about what is / isn’t working in your life, your writing, your communications.
With Mercury in Virgo, communication is clear and methodical, but there is a risk of overthinking and perfectionism. Categorizing and correcting information is the name of the game, but can quickly become an obsession. Mercury in Virgo is critical to a fault, sometimes hyper-focusing on the tiniest of details. Seeing the forest from the trees is a challenge. And then there’s Mercury Retrograde.
2024 Mercury Retrograde in Virgo
Come Aug. 4, Mercury stations retrograde in Virgo, backtracking through the sign until Aug. 14, and eventually re-entering Virgo on Sept. 9. (From there, it stays in Virgo until Sept. 26.) Mercury is currently in its pre-retrograde shadow phase, so you may have already begun seeing some of the mishaps that will dominate the month of August. (That Crowdstrike Outage? Classic Mercury Retrograde.) In Virgo, these mishaps lean towards the persnickety.
Virgo has a lot of great traits—logical, analytical, practical, methodical—but sometimes the sign’s love of precision can slide into perfectionism territory. During 2024 Mercury Retrograde in Virgo, it’s easy to get caught up in the tiniest details, and let them wreak havoc on your nervous system. Learning to adapt and go with the flow of these imperfect mishaps will help you navigate the chaos that occasionally swoops in, and not feel overwhelmed by it. (I’ll have your Mercury Retrograde in horoscopes in the coming weeks!

Reciprocal Synergy (1) - Hierarchy
Tumblr media
Status: Ongoing series
Chapter number: 1 of unknown
Word count for Chapter: 1,853
Work count for Story: 1,853
Genre: Omegaverse Au based off KinnPorsche: Thai BL Drama
A little about the author: I am a mother of two beautiful children, one of whom has special needs, and the other loves everyone. I started a Patreon, and I would be grateful if you donated to help me make ends meet while I am out of work.
This is the very first story I wrote. I posted it here in July 2023, but I have now edited it and finally decided to add it to my library. I hope you enjoy it. I only have two chapters written so far, but I may get back into it... once I am healed up from my hospitalization and almost dying at the start of August 2024.
Each chapter starts with a definition. (thought it would be cool) 💜💜💜
Warnings: NOT BETA READ!! This chapter does have guns, violence, Alpha, and motorcycles.

Tumblr media
hi·er·ar·chy
/ˈhī(ə)ˌrärkē/
noun
A system or organization in which people or groups are ranked one above the other according to status or authority.
Tumblr media
It is everywhere and in everything.
From birth, children are subject to their elders; in schooling, students are subject to teachers who are subject to administration.
At work, new hires are the bottom man on the totem pole, followed by the leads or supervisors, and above them are managers and directors; then, at the top, you have CEOs and owners.
Everyone on the planet should abide by all variations of hierarchies.
However, an internal hierarchy also comes into play when humans are between 15 and 18 years old and present as Alpha, Beta, or Omega. This would tip the scales and disrupt everyone's checks and balances of other hierarchies in play.
Luckily, times have progressed, and there have been rights movements, laws put in place, and general manners taught to all.  Now, Omegas can hold positions of power, and Alphas can be the homemaker of the family.  Still, they rarely do as it is in their nature to act accordingly and submit appropriately.
Then you have the scarce and highly respected ones that remain human and never present. They are seen as gemstones or purity markers and are coveted, not in a good way.
That is where you will find my name, Anikinn Theerapanyakun, in the books.  Next to it, Gender class: N/A Human.  Status: Second Child of the Main family, named Heir to the family business.
Once it was clear that my Elder brother, Thankhun—Beta, was not of sound mind after being kidnapped, and my youngest brother, Kimhandt—Alpha, left the family to follow a music career, I was the best and only choice to take over as the leader of the strongest Mafia in Thailand.
When I never presented a second gender, it was seen by many as a sign that one so rare should be the one to take over.
One would think that the transition would have been smooth and accepted, but that hardly happens in my world.
To prove that I was the best choice, aside from my sub-gender rarity, I efficiently managed to turn a higher profit from our “trades” than my father had during his entire reign. This earned respect from many of those who served the family. The ones who didn’t show their proper respect were given reasons to fear disrespecting me as the new Head of the family.
Some attempted to tell me that I needed to be protected by someone with the sub-gender of an Alpha. Both Alpha men and women came begging my father to mate me off just because I was only a human.
It didn’t stop there.
We even got a few offers to mating from the desperate Omega who sought to make a name for themselves as bagging one of Thailand’s top 10 most eligible bachelors.
I have been burned once, a long time ago, by someone who wanted to mate with me… someone I almost gave my heart and soul to.
However, there is still unrest among some of the leading mafia families in and around Thailand, and taking a mate would be used against me. So I don’t, trying to avoid any more weakness in my image.  I'm not saying that I don’t dabble in the pretty boy now and again, but nothing committed, always paid for, and no kissing is ever allowed.
Tumblr media
“Damn Italians!  Always trying to show that they only follow my Alphahole of a father!”
“Khun Kinn, we need to get you out of here,” Big, my head of security detail, yells at me over the gunfire and motorcycle engines as we run down the alleyway.
Ducking, shooting back, trying not to fall, and not knowing where we are going or where the hell my security team is.
“Ahh!!” Big screams, gripping his arm, “Go on, Khun Kinn.  I will try to hold them off here.  Pete says they are close.  Keep your phone on you, Khun Kinn.  Don’t worry, Arm will trace it, and I will always find you, Boss.”
Big directs me as the bullets stop flying for a few moments and then shoves me down an alleyway filled with neon lights, smelling of piss, vomit, and booze.
I trust my team as much as allowed in my world and take off looking for any entrance—the need to get inside without being seen becomes my driving force.
Why is every street filled with people, dark, and seemingly without a way out?
I look down another alleyway, and I hear music playing!!  Thank God there must be a club or bar nearby, which means they will have a loading dock or patio where I can get in.
Following the music, I hear the shouts and pounding feet behind me, catching up.
Suddenly, the narrow alleyway opens to precisely what I thought it would be: a loading area, but it's not empty.  Even with death following behind me, my breath catches at the sight of a gorgeous, well-toned man leaning against the wall smoking.
“I need your help!”
The man was startled at my demand as my pursuers busted through the alleyway behind me.
Quickly, I made my way to stand next to the man, “Aren’t you going to help me?”
After taking a quick glance at the low-life thugs that are squaring off with us and a cursory head-to-toe spine-tingling look at me, the man smiles cheekily and simply says, “$50,000.”
“Excuse me?!?”
“You want my help?  It's gonna cost $50K.  Take it or leave it,” the man states over his shoulder as he puts out his smoke, rolls his defined shoulders, and cracks his neck.  “Do we have a deal?”
“Deal.”
That is when the world just slowed down.
Without breaking a sweat, the man lays out all three of my pursuers, then smiles at me and bares his elongated K-9s.
This man is an Alpha, and I just received protection with a price.
I hope he sticks to the money and is not hoping for anything more because I am not an Omega and will not bow down to another Alphahole.
Slowly, albeit smugly, he walks up to me.
He is getting ready to say something, but a flash of silver over his shoulder pulls my attention behind him, where one of the thugs struggling to stand is getting prepared to shoot him.  Without any thought, just instinct, I pull the man towards me and cover him.
A deep, rumbling growl emits from the man I am now hunched over protecting.
Why the hell am I protecting him now?
He is the one getting paid to protect me from this shit.
Before another thought can form, the man tugs on my arm and pulls me through what I assume is a bar and out the front.  He hops on an older, slightly beat-up motorcycle.
All I can do is stare.
Why is that so hot-looking right now?
I am trying not to get shot, and here I am, trying not to drool at the sight of a slightly sweaty unknown Alpha with well-toned muscles, tight black pants, and straddling a cheap-ass motorcycle.
BANG BANG
“Fuck, dude!  Get on!” The man yells at me again with a bit of a growl in his voice and starts the motorcycle up.
Quickly following his orders, for nooooo reason other than to save my ass, I hop on his bike, and off we go.  The sudden jerk of the motorcycle startles me, and I grab onto the man's waist to avoid falling off.  Zig-zagging through traffic, time passes, and the speed slows down, but my grip on the man stays the same.
Who can blame me, right?
He is a friendly, solid, warm, burning wood-scented man driving, and I am a passenger.
If anyone asks, it was for safety reasons.
Once we knew the coast was clear and we were no longer in danger, the man pulled into a filling station, and I got off.
“Thank you for your help.”
I tell him while attempting to collect some resemblance of decorum with “windblown hair” and an “after being chased” disheveled suit.
Silence.
No, you are welcome, or no problem… just silence.
Looking up, I see the Alpha look at me with piercing eyes, as if he expects me to pull a stunt or KowTow.
“What is your name?  I need to know for the gift baskets,” I ask, which only gets me a smirk as he slowly stands up and walks toward me, still his gaze unyielding.
“$50,000.”
“Oh that is right.  I do not carry a wallet on me.  Give me your name and phone number so I can wire it to you?”
“Oh yes, here you go.  I will surely give a man I do not know, who has no scent, and who used me to avoid being killed my number so that his henchmen can come to find me and silence me in my sleep.  I think not.” He smugly and growly informs me, placing his hands on his hips.
The only thought passing through my mind is ‘I wonder how his hips would feel in my hands or his hand holding my hips instead.”
While I am blatantly staring at said man's hips, he steps close enough to me that a warm puff of air smelling of burning wood, like a fireplace, is blown on my face without me noticing.
Snapping out of my what can only be explained as a temporary loss of consciousness and not horny teenage-like daydreams, I now realize the Alpha is so close a deep, quick breath would be all it would take to…
DAMN IT, KINN!
Think with your brain and not your balls.
Sneering at the closeness in proximity and taking a step back, the man takes me in one more time.  Running his tongue along his teeth, his eyes light up, and with speed only Alphas possess, he has my left arm in his hand and is grabbing my watch.
“This will do.  I'm sure it's worth enough.  You can borrow money for a pay phone.” Stepping back, the Alpha mounts the motorcycle, slips on the watch, and starts the engine up.
Before I knew it, a panic started to make a pit in my stomach.
He is leaving!
He can’t go!
“Wait!” I yell, startling him, “I never got your name.  So I can pray for blessings upon you for helping me?” I question, taking a step forward, praying that Arm and Big arrive before he leaves.
After a sideways glance and a fake smile, "Jom, my name is Jom,” he says as he rides off.
Arm, my tech geek bodyguard, is talented, but I hope he is good enough to find this Alpha Jom.  He has my favorite watch, and I should give him the money out of proper etiquette, but the pit in my hand just doubled in size at the thought of never finding him again.
I swear it is just about good business and nothing more… is nothing more… it shouldn’t be anything more... Right?

"Most people think spirituality + magical things are about knowing the future. It's really about staying present...." - Me : The Magik Mirror
🌟Happy August Everyone. Hello, Thank you for following along 💛
I wanted to take some time to really write out explicit content just for this Tumblr page. I've been trying to figure out the best way to navigate having multiple platforms for the same things. Many times that simply looks like copying and pasting everything between sites. I think of it as "expanding my reach", but I also have to consider that although some people may follow along on more than one platform, I still have to find what's unique about each one. For Tumblr, I know pictures and short videos are great, but it seems as if writing is what gets the crowd going. I want to try to be more intentional about that while still mixing in the visual content that most desire. If you enjoy my content written/video/photo don't be afraid to comment on posts or send in request for things you'd like me to discuss, questions you'd like answered and things you wish to see here!
Like Usual, at least as of late, I've pre-recorded an introductory video for the month of August introducing energies, downloads and spirit messages that come in the form of advice, questions for us to ponder on, a little heart to heart and let's not forget readings . Find the link to that video at the end of this post! August 2024 is jam packed with astrological & spiritual activities that will manifest in our physical realities one way or another. My job as a spiritualist is to not just let you know what's on the way, but to give information that could potentially increase benefits and decrease challenges. It's also to help keep us PRESENT. If we were waiting for a climatic moment this summer, I think this month might be it. For me personally, the summer has been a challenging time requiring both strategy and surrender, openness yet protection. I've been managing pains of the past, while simultaneously enjoying the simplicities of the present and setting intentions and high hopes of the future. Summer 2024 definitely feels like a waiting game....
In the 2nd Eclipse of 2024 (Pisces New Moon Solar Eclipse) I discussed how a REBIRTH is starting to occur. Since Fall 2023, I've also spoken on LABOR PAINS. Scroll/Revisit older content both written and recorded to find these moments. Serious, major and permanent changes are unfolding and it's taken about 5 years for us to truly arrive to this sort of "promised land". It doesn't matter what you see online, EVERYONE is going through something and has been through things that are challenging to our morals, psyche and more.
EPHESIANS 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Something is happening. This month is one where, starting off, we have a mixture of ALL elements (water, earth, air, fire) in the sky. The Sun is in Cancer until mid month. Saturn's retrograde through Aquarius continues. Jupiter & Mars are in Taurus and there's the steady roll call of planets transiting Leo. By the month's end we'll also begin Sidereal Virgo transits and an introduction to Part 2 of 2024's Eclipses. Of course I'll have content translating the meaning of transits & astrological events, but in general I want to introduce the month of August as a month of Realignment, Recommitment, Reawakening. With Leo's energy in the sky we are gifted the power of presence. To be fully in one place at one time. When we don’t allow ourselves to be easily distracted/divided, we can truly tap into to the power of each moment and really live life accordingly. Right now this present moment says :
Get back on track...
Not just with "goals" and to do lists, dieting, exercise and other tangible goals. Get back on track with your Spirit, with your true essence. The nature of why you came here in the first place. Many of us have been fighting internally / externally. But Sometimes, the battle is won not through confrontations, but in transcendence. Remember your Light : who you are/wish to be/have always been. The part that shines brightest and is undeniable. August is a month not just to re-up on good habits & apply pressure if needed, but to get back to YOU. To be fully present with your favorite self and let that natural, effortless light shine through. It's also a time to protect and preserve yourself from anything or anyone who seeks to detract from what the light within wishes to express with out.
When I took these pictures I felt peace and happiness. I felt better. I felt aligned. I felt like I got something I needed when I recorded this video too. I felt centered. I felt ready to face whatever's next because I know that good or bad, it does not have to change the ESSENCE of who I am, the gifts I possess and calling I have on my life. I just have to be present. And that's what I really want us to focus on this month... leaning into your core, your essence, your nature and living more fully with that part of you. Everything else is a distraction meant to consume and take over your light.... ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️

Transiting Mars in 2023
Because Mars begins 2023 retrograde, I’m including those dates in the list.
Saturday, September 3, 2022, 22:04 UT - transiting Mars enters pre-retrograde shadow, 8°08’ Gemini
Sunday, October 30, 2022, 13:26 UT - transiting Mars stations retrograde, 25°37’ Gemini
Sunday, January 1, 2023 - transiting Mars at 9°04’ Gemini
Thursday, January 12, 2023, 20:57 UT - transiting Mars stations direct, 8°08’ Gemini
Thursday, March 16, 2022, 03:58 UT - transiting Mars exits post-retrograde shadow, 25°37’ Gemini
Saturday, March 25, 2023, 11:45 UT - transiting Mars enters Cancer
Saturday, May 20, 2023, 14:31 UT - transiting Mars enters Leo
Monday, July 10, 2023, 11:40 UT - transiting Mars enters Virgo
Sunday, August 27, 2023, 13:20 UT - transiting Mars enters Libra
Thursday, October 12, 2023, 04:04 UT - transiting Mars enters Scorpio
Friday, November 24, 2023, 10:15 UT - transiting Mars enters Sagittarius
Monday, January 1, 2024 - transiting Mars at 27°19’ Sagittarius
It isn’t fair to begin a New Year with Mars retrograde! We want to go charging and barging in, full speed ahead, with the annual promise of a new beginning. But, alas, with a retrograde Mars in Gemini, we are being forcibly reminded to look before we leap - to plan ahead - and/or perhaps for some of us, “no battle plan survives first contact with the enemy.” We can go ahead and plot and scheme all we want to, but we had best prepare to be flexible in 2023.
After March 16, when he exits its post-retrograde shadow, Mars goes back to being a trigger for the situations that the slower-moving planets are trying to manifest.

Mastering Mercury At Times of Retrograde
Mastering Mercury At Times of Retrograde,
FCGCT Commentary: We are moving from the mind, to the Heart... not the balancing of the two. The mind conflicts with the Heart, and is the cause for imbalance, pain, fear, suffering and more. It is the Heart and Brain which work in harmony together. The mind... the ego, blocks the Heart, as it Edges God Out. It is the Heart and Brain which work in harmony to allow Balanced Harmonics, your Divine Blueprint. Let go of the mind, and solely flow from the Heart, connected to the Unified Heart in Unity Consciousness.

We have a Mercury retrograde commencing November 17 2018 in Sagittarius. The traditional advice is “Don’t travel, Don’t sign contracts. Don’t marry. Don’t touch electrics!” However, the whole Mercury retrograde cycle actually lasts eight weeks and happens three times, sometimes even four times in a year! That’s a long time to hide under the duvet and a real waste of a truly magical time. Mercury generally zips between two worlds, or rather, the two hemispheres of our brain.
During the Mercury retrograde period, it feels like Mercury has gone down into the underworld. In this realm, closer to spirit, we become more right-brain orientated. It is dark, so other senses are heightened. We will feel extra sensitive here, psychic even. Everything will seem hyper-real… you will notice things you had overlooked before. This will prompt you to re-evaluate, renovate, re-form, and re-invent. It’s true you might have to redo things because Mercury will hit the same degree three times, but this transit won’t let you go into autopilot. There are danger spots though.
When Mercury retrograde is stationing (Changing directions) we are at a wobbly stage where we are likely to slip-up, make mistakes, and misread another’s communications. Once we are over the threshold and into the Underworld, we can safely go about our business, knowing that we are in another realm. The same goes for when Mercury is stationing direct, just make sure you give your brain a few days to adjust back to solar thinking.
The house in your natal chart that the Mercury retrograde falls in will be your Underworld zone. There you will question everything. It will make you jittery about signing contracts because you will be constantly thinking, “Is this what I really want?”. Before the retrograde is a good time to finish off those Solar left-brain projects and gather information to bring down with you into your retrograde cave. Then you can slow things down, let yourself be taken into other dimensions, try on different filters, experiment, shine a light on your demons, then recharge and reboot.
Cazimi
Halfway through the whole Mercury retrograde 2018 journey we have Sun cazimi Mercury. Here opens a window of wonderfulness where we can stand in the eye of the hurricane but miraculously come out in one piece. Make use of the special Sun exact conjunct Mercury moment (Cazimi in traditional astrology). Send a romantic message that really hits the mark or pitch an artistic idea. Try as close to these times as you can. Cazimi at November 27 1.16am PST, 4.16am EST, 9.16am GMT. (Cazimi lasts about 2.5 hours either side of the hour.)

The Meaning of Retrograde Planets
Retrograde planets are a popular topic in astrology and there is some controversy about the general meaning. For example, Vedic astrologers see retrograde motion as a beneficial influence, while Western astrologers focus on the negatives, such as lost baggage or missing mail when Mercury is retrograde. I prefer to interpret each retrograde phase based on the aspects and fixed stars from the beginning to the end of the retrograde cycle (the shadow zone).’Retrograde’ literally means opposite or reverse, so a planet in retrograde motion appears to be moving in reverse.
Planets do not, of course, move backward, and the apparent reverse motion is due to the elliptical orbits of the earth and planets. Regardless of the astronomy, the main point is that from where we stand, planets DO appear to move backward from time to time so we should expect this to have some astrological effect on our lives. Generally, we feel the energy of retrograde planets in a more introspective or reserved manner than usual, and there may be a karmic theme or feeling of deja vu depending on the nature of the planet.
The feeling of deja vu may also be because the retrograde planet will go over a certain degree three times over. People who experience this feeling strongest will be those who have a key planet or angle at this spot. For example; Ones IC is hit three times and you are looking to move home. Hit 1 you may see the house you want to buy. Hit 2 (Retrograde) may be when you have to go through surveys and making sure everything is fine to buy it, this will mean re-evaluating finances, whatever you have to do you are always double checking. Hit 3 maybe when you finally get the go-ahead to move and the issue is resolved. Retrogrades give us the chance to really get our teeth onto a matter because we are forced to go over old ground again and again. This may get frustrating and tedious, but ultimately it is very useful, for tackling something karmic we may have been avoiding and that we have to address once and for all.

Space challenges for President Biden: Four issues for the next four years
As Joe Biden begins the first year of his presidency, there is still much we don’t know about where he and his vice president, Kamala Harris, stand on major issues in civil and national security space. The pandemic and economic recovery are sure to drive Biden’s initial agenda.
There are, nonetheless, several key space issues the new administration will have to address. NASA’s Artemis program is now unlikely to meet its 2024 human landing goal, giving the administration the opportunity to revisit the program while enhancing the agency’s Earth science work. The growing population of satellites and debris may lead the administration to reexamine the Trump administration’s approach to civil space traffic management. The Space Force will continue to mature but faces growing pains. The Pentagon will also finish programs, from new launch vehicles to LEO constellations, started under the Trump administration.

The future of Artemis
Ever since Biden won the presidential election in November, the space industry has speculated what his administration will mean for NASA’s Artemis program to return humans to the moon in 2024. The Democratic Party platform in August endorsed in general terms “NASA’s work to return Americans to the moon,” but made no mention of either retaining or changing the 2024 goal.
That decision may already have been made for him. In December, Congress passed a fiscal year 2021 spending bill that included $850 million for NASA’s Human Landing System (HLS) program, just a quarter of what the agency requested. NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine had warned for months that keeping a 2024 human landing on schedule would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, without full funding for HLS.
There was, even before Congress passed the bill, widespread skepticism that a 2024 landing was feasible. “It was a long shot to begin with,” said Gwynne Shotwell, president of SpaceX, shortly after the election. She speculated that the new administration would defer a human lunar landing to “slightly later than 2024.”
A new approach might look something like what NASA was pursuing in the first half of the Trump administration, when it was focused on first building out the lunar Gateway, followed by human lunar landings around 2028. NASA has continued to make agreements with Canada, Europe and Japan on elements of the Gateway, so broader changes to human spaceflight plans that do away with the Gateway could be geopolitically costly for the Biden administration.
NASA may have to make decisions on the future of Artemis soon, perhaps before a new administrator is in place. The three companies that received HLS contracts last year — Blue Origin, Dynetics and SpaceX — are waiting on NASA to select who will proceed into full development. The agency previously said it would make decisions in the spring, but both the limited funding and the change in administrations could alter those plans.
At the same time, the Biden administration is widely expected to put greater resources into Earth science programs at NASA, as part of a broader emphasis on climate change. The party platform called for “strengthening” NASA and NOAA Earth observation missions “to better understand how climate change is impacting our home planet.”
That could create opportunities not just for Earth scientists but developers of spacecraft and related technologies. “With the administration’s planned focus on climate change, we expect growth in spacecraft and information systems related to understanding weather and climate change,” Eileen Drake, president and chief executive of Aerojet Rocketdyne, said at the AIAA SciTech Forum Jan. 11.
Exactly what form that new emphasis on Earth science will take is not yet clear. NASA already has a lengthy list of recommended missions from the previous Earth science decadal survey published in 2018 but has been slow to implement them because of limited budgets. Additional funding could accelerate those missions and feed into a broader climate change initiative.
Some have bolder expectations. “Managing the Earth’s ability to sustain human life and biodiversity will likely, in my view, dominate a civil space agenda for a Biden-Harris administration,” said Lori Garver, NASA deputy administrator during the Obama administration, shortly after the election.
However that climate change initiative develops, it likely means that boots on the moon will have to wait.
While the incoming administration has offered no hints of its views on the subject, there is nothing that would stop it from moving civil space traffic management to the FAA or authorizing the Commerce Department to perform STM, making it easy for the White House to change its mind. Space traffic management
At the end of the Obama administration four years ago, the outlines of a civil space traffic management (STM) system were beginning to take shape. The Federal Aviation Administration’s Office of Commercial Space Transportation was starting preparations to take on that work from the U.S. Air Force after a consensus by the White House and other government agencies that it was the best agency for the job.
That changed in June 2018, when the Trump administration issued Space Policy Directive 3 on civil STM. The administration directed the Air Force to transition civil STM activities to the Commerce Department, specifically its Office of Space Commerce. It concluded that the office could take on space traffic management, freeing up the FAA to oversee increasing commercial launch activity.
Two and a half years later, the office was finally ready to take on that challenge. Congress provided the office with $10 million in the fiscal year 2021 omnibus spending bill in December — less than the $15 million it requested but the first time it received any funding for STM work. Up until then, the Office of Space Commerce was laying the groundwork for STM, including coordination with the Space Force and meetings with industry, but needed funding to hire staff and develop systems.
“Next year will be largely what I’ll call a ‘building block’ year,” Kevin O’Connell, director of the Office of Space Commerce, predicted in October during a 0SpaceNews webinar. If his office got its requested funding, he projected that by the end of 2021 “we will have an initial architecture that is up and running.”
That assumes the Biden administration continues on that path. While the incoming administration has offered no hints of its views on the subject, there is nothing that would stop it from moving civil STM to the FAA or authorizing the Commerce Department to perform space traffic management, making it easy for the White House to change its mind.
However, there is now a consensus in the public and private sector that Commerce is the best place — or, at least, a good enough place — to handle civil STM. A congressionally mandated report by the National Academy of Public Administration, released in August, concluded Commerce was a better agency for civil STM than the FAA, NASA, or Defense Department.
With the growing amount of debris in orbit, along with emergence of megaconstellations like Starlink, most just want the government to move ahead as fast as it can. “In the end, it doesn’t really matter who does it, just that it gets done,” said Chris Kunstadter, global head of space for insurer AXA XL.
Another question will be how much attention Commerce gives to civil STM. Biden’s nominee for Secretary of Commerce, Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo, hasn’t been involved in space in any way or shown an interest in the subject. However, the same was true for Trump’s nominee, financier Wilbur Ross, who never attended a launch before 2018. Yet he became a vocal advocate for the department’s work on space, including STM.

Next steps for U.S. Space Force
Among the final acts of the Trump administration was a celebration at the White House of the U.S. Space Force’s first anniversary, where Vice President Mike Pence announced the members of the service would be called guardians. The sixth branch of the armed forces was a darling of President Trump and no detail about the Space Force was too trivial to trumpet.
The Space Force will now enter its formative years with bipartisan support in Congress but under a new commander in chief with a different worldview. Biden is not expected to undo his predecessor’s prized achievement, but the Space Force will be lower on the totem pole.
“I don’t think the Space Force is in any danger of going away, but I don’t think it will be politically favored the way it was under Trump,” said David Burbach, associate professor of national security affairs at the U.S. Naval War College.
Over the next four years, the Space Force will stay busy building the service. In 2020, more than 2,200 former members of Air Force Space Command formally transferred to the Space Force. Another 3,600 are projected to transfer in 2021. The long-term goal is a Space Force of about 6,000 military members and 8,000 civilians. The service will be standing up a Space Systems Command to oversee acquisitions and plans to build a space intelligence center. The Biden administration later this year will have to provide recommendations to Congress on what space units from the Army and the Navy could be realigned under the Space Force.
More broadly, political appointees and military officials will continue to have to address questions on the Space Force’s role and reason for being.
“There is still a lot of confusion about the role of the Space Force,” said Burbach, noting that he does not speak for the government. Even though the space service’s job is to operate and defend U.S. satellites, “they run commercials showing astronauts going to the moon and exploring other planets. That’s not what the Space Force is going to do. They are not fighting laser battles in space.”
“The primary job for the Space Force right now is really focused on Earth,” said Scott Pace, former executive secretary of the National Space Council, during a recent National Security Space Association webinar. He noted the service has its hands full just carrying out its basic responsibilities to provide space-based services to U.S. military forces and allies.
A criticism often lobbed at the Space Force is that it created an expensive new bureaucracy to do the same work that the Air Force Space Command used to do, with the same people. But critics need to move on, said Deborah Lee James, former secretary of the Air Force during the Obama administration. “It’s not worth the bureaucratic churn to put it back the way it was,” she said last month at the Mitchell Institute’s West Coast Aerospace Forum.
Congress has made similar points and directed the Department of the Air Force and the Space Force to propose by May a revamped space acquisition process, a responsibility that will fall on Biden’s appointees. The fiscal year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act asks for specific recommendations for making space acquisitions move faster, in ways that capture innovations from the private sector.

National security space modernization
During the Trump administration, the Pentagon took important steps to modernize key national security space programs. For now, there is nothing to suggest Biden’s appointees — many of them veterans of the Obama administration — will reverse course on major programs, at least until they have a chance to dig through budgets and submit new proposals.
“We see no reason to think it won’t be full steam ahead,” said Mike Tierney, industry analyst at the defense and space consulting firm Velos. In 2021, “we’re going to get a lot of the same” simply because the incoming leaders are not going to have time to substantially amend Trump’s budgets until their second year in office.
Over the next four years, Biden’s Pentagon will oversee the transition of the National Security Space Launch program to a new phase where SpaceX will have a more prominent role flying military satellites to orbit and longtime incumbent United Launch Alliance will be tested to introduce a new launch vehicle, Vulcan, that the company promised will be ready in 2021. It will fall on the Space Force and the Biden administration to help SpaceX and ULA clear this hurdle and assure Congress the nation has the domestic launch vehicles it needs to reliably deliver critical national security satellites to orbit.
Sometime in 2024, the Space Force will start planning for a new heavy-lift launch competition. Biden’s administration could be in a position to evaluate whether emerging players like Blue Origin, which tried and lost in 2020, can win a spot in Space Force’s stable of launch providers.
Another item on the space agenda is the resiliency — or lack thereof — of U.S. space systems. This has been a much-discussed issue during the Trump administration amid warnings that U.S. satellites are vulnerable to jamming, cyberattacks and threats from anti-satellite weapons.
Former undersecretary of defense for research and engineering Mike Griffin pushed the Pentagon to invest in proliferated low-Earth orbit constellations, like those being built by private companies, to provide resiliency. Under Griffin, the Pentagon stood up the Space Development Agency to take on the design and early development of military systems in LEO. The young agency, which was opposed by the Air Force Association and others, is preparing to launch its first 28 satellites in 2022.
“SDA will get a fresh look,” Tierney said, but there’s no sign that the Biden team will be opposed to it. Once the SDA shows it can deliver on its promise to field a constellation in just two years, he expects it will be seen as the “agile, innovative new arm of the Space Force focused on proliferated LEO.”
The large “exquisite” satellites that have been the bread and butter of Pentagon space programs will not go away even if the SDA’s proliferated systems come to fruition. Under Biden, the Space Force will continue to acquire multibillion-dollar systems for missile warning, secure communications, and navigation. But there will also be parallel efforts to diversify the space architecture and use cheaper, smaller platforms as the private sector continues to drive down the cost of satellites and launch.
How the military leverages commercial space technology for national security will remain an issue over the next four years. A recent Aerospace Corp. space policy paper aimed at the Biden administration noted that the “increasing commercialization of space is presenting new opportunities for national security acquisition.” A trend to watch will be whether U.S. intelligence and defense agencies begin to seriously consider alternatives to the traditional model of hiring contractors to develop bespoke capabilities.

Here’s a fact regarding every* solar eclipse that hit the United States in the first 250 years. (*Disclaimer: All total solar eclipses that hit the region governed by a state within the United States at the time of the eclipse. As in no western U.S. till the late 19th c. and no territories.)
The first solar eclipse in the U.S. after the country was formed in the Declaration of Independence was in June 24, 1778. Thomas Jefferson was there, but he was clouded out.
Next one hit the current state of Maine in October 27, 1780, but the expedition from Harvard miscalculated the path and missed the totality entirely.
They would have to wait till June 16, 1806. This was especially important for Tecumseh because he thought the event would unite the Natives against the White aggressors. But there was something for the Whites as well, as the name ‘corona’ was first coined by José Joaquín de Ferrer while visiting Kinderhook, New York for an observation.
Next one grazed through the Southern states in November 30, 1834. There was only few sighting of the totality, but there was quite a few in the northern states above the path.
And that’s a shame because the next total eclipse didn’t happen till after the Civil War in August 7, 1869. There was plenty of expedition in the States, up in the territory of Alaska, George Davison found himself lucky as the Chilkat Indians hid as the Sun went away.
But the big showdown in US Solar eclipses in the 19th century was the July 29, 1878 eclipse. Big stars like Thomas Edison and Maria Miller had their day in the limelight.
But there was more to come in the century as there was one in January 1, 1889, The New Year’s Day Eclipse going through Western United States and was the impetus for the Pacific Astronomical Society’s founding in just-completed Lick Observatory in the Bay area.
Next one was in May 28, 1900 going through Southern US, the Smithsonian was on the job going down to Wadesboro, North Carolina to take beautiful high-quality photographs courtesy of Thomas Smillie. They unfortunately did not find the mysterious planet called Vulcan.
As we had to the Twentieth Century, we have a eclipse very much like ‘17 eclipse in June 8, 1918. US Naval Observatory sent out an expedition in Baker City, Oregon. (which is a great place to go if you want to see ‘17 eclipse) Unfortunately for the people who wanted closer understanding to corona and Einstein’s general relativity, the country was surrounded by a slight cloud cover, meaning the photographs came little fuzzy.
Next few eclipses only grazed through United States, September 10, 1923 only passes through Channel Islands and touching San Diego before dipping below to Mexico, while January 25, 1925 only passed through the Northeastern United States, including New York City, but only if you were above 96th street, below that you only get a partial eclipse.
This peculiar behavior was akin to next one in April 28, 1930. This was barely a total solar eclipse, totality lasting about a second or so. But there’s a nice picture of that solar eclipse made by none other than Ansel Adams himself. New England had the following eclipse in August 31, 1932 passing through mostly New Hampshire and Maine.
Next one in the list (‘43 one was in Alaska, not yet a state) was in July 9, 1945, starting and briefly going through Idaho and Montana before going across the world and ending in USSR. Perhaps last moment comradery before the start of the Cold War.
Interesting though is next eclipse was pretty similar. June 30, 1954 was the three continent eclipse. Starting in USA and going through Greenland and eastern Europe before disappearing in central Asia. Again, little differently, eclipse started in Boston in October 2, 1959 but unfortunately it was rained out. Few did went over the clouds for a look.
Alaska and Maine were the recipient of the eclipse of July 20, 1963... and indeed it features in some Stephen King stories like Gerald's Game and Dolores Claiborne.
Next one was in March 7, 1970, it was first broadcasted in color television, going through southern Atlantic coast. July 10, 1972 was an eclipse through Alaska, although its transit in Nova Scotia may want through the lyric of Carly Simon’s You’re So Vain or it was the previous... it’s quite unclear, actually. I guess it could be both considering...
Of course, eclipse savvy would know the last eclipse of the 20th century in the continental USA was in February 26, 1979, going through the Pacific Northwest. But it wasn’t the last eclipse for the fifty states as Hawaii had its taste of eclipse in July 19, 1991, but again it was cloudy in The Big Island that day. But it was clear in Baja California, but that’s not here or there.
Of course, there is the Great American Eclipse happening in Aug 21, 2017, that many, including I, are excited to go to, but if you missed this eclipse, don’t worry. The next eclipse after that is in April 8, 2024 in the eastern part of the continental USA.
And that’s it! That’s all the eclipses in USA as it happened through the first 250 years. Thank for reading this long and dry post.
