Okay I don't know if this is a good place to ask, sorry if it's random or annoying! I'm trying to learn Welsh for study purposes (goal: read Mabinogi) and I'm wondering if y'all can recommend any welsh-language podcasts or audiobooks? Especially medieval-adjacent ones, because brain gremlins. Thanks! (I hope this isn't annoying.)
Hey! Not annoying at all, it makes me so so happy when people ask this question!! Welsh is still an endangered language and a really underappreciated literary culture, please learn and read Welsh and tell other people about it!
Now I've had this ask before but the Tumblr search function continues to be garbage so I'm just gonna start again.
The Learn Welsh Podcast is super useful, as is Y Podleidiad Dysgu Cymraeg from BBC Radio Cymru. You could also check out Doctoriaid Cymraeg.
The fiction podcast We Know None has a little Welsh language in it, as does @ethicstownpod. And Gather the Suspects, Seren and Chain of Being are all from Welsh creators, so I recommend them!
Audiobooks are a bit trickier - because Welsh is endangered there aren't as many. This said, the bookshop Y Lolfa is an amazing Welsh language book store that has a few Welsh language audiobooks, and you can access it online. It also looks like Audible has a 'Welsh language' section of audiobooks - a quick glance and I think the books by Colin Jones should be a good start. They're fantasy rather than real mythology but designed for learners.
Always check the reviews, as sadly due to Welsh not being as widely spoken as it once was, sometimes these things will be made with bad pronunciation / mistakes, and might take you down the wrong track.
Also just a note - the original language of the Mabinogion is Medieval Welsh, which is quite different to modern Welsh. However you can find translations of it into modern Welsh and English.
And finally - it's not an audibook, but there is now a Welsh language edition of The Hobbit, Yr Hobyd, if you want to try that!
Happy learning, thank you for the ask!

Mid-Year Reading Round-Up
So I haven't done any monthly reading summaries in a while, but we have just put a stopper on June, so I thought I'd do a bit of a mid-year account. So, without further ado:
So far in 2024 I have
Read 34 individual books (okay, one I started in December, but finished in January, and one I finished today, but most of it was read in June. Some books were also read twice/three times because of work)
Read further 4 comic volumes
Finished 1 audiobook (I will not add this to the books, not because audibooks are inferior, but because this specific edition was the abridged version of half of a book)
I DNF'd 2 books
Read over 16K words
Translated just ove 74 sheets of text (one sheet accounts for about 6K words; this amount comes together from 4 full and 2 partial books--one book I was asked to take over 2/3s the way through, another I'm currently working on)
My best reads so far this year (these include re-reads, I don't care):
Letters of Enchanment duology by Rebecca Ross
Yellowface by R.F. Kuang
The Agency for Scandal by Laura Wood
Weyward by Emilia Hart
Goddess in the Machine duology by Lora Beth Johnson
The Inheritence Games trilogy by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (I haven't read book 4 yet)
James Herriot: All Creatures Great and Small
Honorable mentions:
Queen's Rising by Rebecca Ross
A Heavy Dose of Allison Tandy by Jeff Bishop
The Power by Naomi Alderman
Threads the Bind by Kika Hatzopoulou
A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher
A Bear Called Paddington by Michael Bond
Doing Time by Jodi Taylor
The worst books I actually finished:
Hate Mail by Donna Marchetti
Girl, Goddess, Queen by Bea Fitzpatrick

My garden is at its best with all the tiniest flowers that bloomed naturally.
20|03|2023
Happy spring equinox! Yesterday I ended up dnf-ing The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling. I reached the middle point and realized that not only I was struggling with picking the book up, but I just didn't care at all about the main character. It would have been a waste of time to continue it, and it probably would have put me into a reading slump. The overall idea of the horror set in a cave is really cool, but I really didn't like the characters and the writing was nothing special. I might give it another try in the future, we'll see. This leaves me with a void because I do have unread books but none of them calls to me if you know what I mean. To be honest I don't even know what I am in the mood for. As I was going to the bas stop to get back home from uni I stopped in one of the bookstore on my way that has English editions to look for something, for some reason the was Babel on my mind. But I couldn't find it nor something else that called to me so I walked out empty-handed. I'll see if I get any inspiration one of these days, and in the meantime I'll try to pick something from my pile of unread books.
Productivity:
posted this book review
protohistory lecture
highlighted the notes I wrote today
continued rereading my history of libraries and reading notes
finished listening to the audibook of Peter Pan
wrote the first draft of the book review I'll post about it
wrote the first draft of the new update of the genre bingo I will post soon
practiced Irish on duolingo
downloaded new protohistory materials on my tablet
Self care:
40 minute walk
did a tarot reading

Is "Dead Girls Don't Say Sorry" available in paperback anywhere? Also, where is the best place to order from so you get the biggest chunk of royalties?
not yet! it seems like these days paperback print runs roll out about a year after release, so we'll keep our fingers crossed that we'll get a paperback edition next year. on the waterstones website it says there's an option for a paperback edition, but i think that's not accurate advertising. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
as for royalties, anywhere is excellent! i get royalties (eventually) for all orders, and the difference is based on editions (hardcover, paperback, audibook) but truly is only different by a few cents, so order from wherever they're going to charge you the least for shipping ;)
thanks etta!!

//I'm currently working my way through the Dune audibook on Audible and I cannot recommend it enough. It's the edition with the remake movie cover and is narrated by Simon Vance (who is just amazing btw as a narrator) and has a full cast too. I apologise if this is a repeat. I keep losing track of who I have and haven't told.

I... don't hate this? (So far) That could be down to the audibook narrator I suppose but...
The prince has apologized for the correct things and explained himself and acknowledged that even if he knew she wouldn't die he hadn't considered that she could be HURT, and that's his bad. Vhalla has called him on his shit. Vhalla is taking time to consider her options. I'm wary of this bond business but only because of sarah janet.
Like it needs a good edit but it's by no means unlistenable?
What's the general feeling on Air Awakens, fellow readers? I'm having an easier time of it via audiobook but FRANKLY do not see how the prince can be redeemed (and I Know The Signs of the Redeemed Love Interest okay)(that being said I guess it's always possible to surprise me)

When Tenoch Huerta hugged and kissed a Latine reporter’s head after bringing them to welling emotions when he said:
“The only thing I want is the next time little boys and girls [in Latine countries] see themselves in the mirror, that they feel proud of that reflection. That they see that there was never anything wrong with them, but rather in the eyes of those who judged them.”
When Tenoch Huerta of Nahua and Purépecha Indigenous ancestry said this in a cast interview for Wakanda Forever:
“...We have in Latin America, two main roots: which is the Indigenous roots, of course, and African roots. The food, the customs, the music, even our way of life has a strong influence from African cultures. So for me it’s important to see it [in the movies]; I mean this character [Namor] comes from Meso-American inspiration, particularly Mayan and, of course, is an interpretation of those cultures. But at the same time, we can feel close [to it] because all the process to get us “mixed” is just a way to erase our Indigenous heritage and they taught us to feel ashamed of who we are. For 500 years!”
When long-time actor--since 2006--and advocate, Tenoch Huerta published a book (paperbacks set to release December 13 but digital copies available now!!!) titled Orgullo Prieto (Brown Pride) that is a reflection on racism and colorism in Mexico. He has also gifted his voice for the audibook narration of these books: La sombra de Miztlán [The Shadow of Miztlán]; Las Venas Abiertas de América Latina [The Open Veins of Latin America]; and Los Narcos Gringos [The Gringo Drug Traffickers] (Spanish Edition).
And when Tenoch reiterated:
“It’s not common in Mexico, in Latin America that a brown-skinned guy could be the main character and have a lead role in movies. And then I jumped to the U.S. and I did it here [with Wakanda Forever] and it’s powerful and deep, and I hope the kids in their homes can feel identified. And I’d just say to them never, never in the life was nothing wrong with you, it was in the eyes of the people who was looking at you. But not [as in nothing being wrong] in you, not in your skin, not in your roots, not in your blood, not in your history. So please, babies, feel proud.”
He is also a mental health advocate and champion for the sciences. He has said all the YouTube channels he follows are science, historian or philosophy-related. If this man didn’t already have me in a choke-hold I swear to fucking god-

The Burning God by R.F. Kuang
This is the third and final book of the poppy war series, and I cannot believe that I am finally done with it. It surely was an intense journey but I really enjoyed my time with these books. As usual with book reviews of sequels I don't feel like writing much about the actual plot because I don't want to spoil the whole story to people who might have not read the other books yet. For this reason I will focus a bit more on my reading experience with this book. This time I mostly read it with the audibook and only read a few chapters on my physical copy. I have been crocheting a lot and the audiobook of this novel was a great companion. Overall I enjoyed the book and the series as a whole, I would be lying if I said it's perfect. Don't get me wrong it's a great book series but there's a few elements that felt a bit repetitive to me (more in the spoilery section under the cut). I still don't know how I feel about the ending, it definitely makes sense and it works, but in my head it could have been different (again more in the spoilery section). But I understand why the author went with this option, and how my dream ending was a bit inplausible. As I have said in the reviews of the other novels of this book series the strongest point of this fantasy is its worldbuilding which is extremely layered and well structured. It's always very believable, and the author did a great job with a portrayal of war that is everything but glorified. War in these books is brutal, devastating and hopeless, which is refreshing compared to a lot of fantasy books in which war is usually this very epic battle between good and evil (don't get me wrong I do like lots of those fantasy too, but it's nice to have something different on my shelves that did an amazing job with these themes). I also particularly appreacited the fact that my edition ended with an additional chapter/short story from the perspective of Nezha, it was a lovely choice to add it. Overall I really recommend this book series, and if the size of the books intimidates you the audiobook are a very good opiton as well.
(more thoughts in the spoilery section below)
This section contains spoilers
The one thing I didn't like about this series is that there's a couple of elements that feel a bit repetitive in the plot. Rin fully embraces one side, gives her everything and believes to it blindly, untily she figures out how corrupt that side is and switches and starts the circle all over again. It's good to create this feeling that all sides in a war can be corrupted, and that people in power will try their everything to gain more power no matter what the cost, but after a while it felt a bit repetitive. I feel like Rin's character seems to never grow up a lot in this regard. The other element that felt incredibly repetitive is how every single time that Rin finds herfself face to face with whoever is her opponent at that time she takes so much time to strike and lets them talk eccessively. For the way the character is built I would find it more plausible for her to shoot first and ask questions later, I don't know if it makes sense. She is so resolute to kill whoever her enemy is and when she can she usually ends up letting them go or waste unnecessary time. One thing that weirded me out a bit was how quickly they got rid of the trifecta, because for some reason I expected it to be a bigger plot point, but honestly after it happened I didn't really asked myself too many questions. The one thing I am still questioning myself about is the ending. As I mentioned above I still don't know how I feel about it, and I personally would have preferred something a bit more drastic. Again the real ending makes sense and it works well with the story, but I was lowkey hoping Rin would go full corruption arc, completly embrace the phoenix and burn everything.

Hello! I just finished the entire script, and I must say that I'm completely satisfied. At first I thought that the soundtrack is a bunch of separate songs put together in a playlist, but NO: some tracks are medleys of different songs carefully edited together. I can't imagine the amount of work that u guys put in this. A small request if u guys don't mind: can you put the ending theme of Merlin in the end of all the playlists? All in all the story is SUPERB and the music PERFECT. THANK YOU!
Thank you so much!! Actually, at the end of the last track in every playlist, the main Merlin theme starts playing, as it’s connected to the end tracks. It just makes the whole vibe of the show really come alive. ^__^
Oh, for sure it was a ton of work, but we loved doing it! In fact, if you’re interested, the British Youtube channel Balencian, who’s well known for recording audibooks of Merlin 6: Kingdom Come, is in the process of recording an audiobook of the first few chapters of an original fantasy series of ours called The Occasional King, and that will have time soundtracks that we put together as well! If you enjoyed our script, I think you’d have a blast with our other series. Similar to Merlin, it features Merlin/Arthur style bromances, court intrigue, and lots of sarcastic humor. ;)

Currently reading: “The Girl with the Golden Bouffant,” by Mabel Maney
Books I picked up from The Book Nook yesterday:
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Child of the Hunt,” by Christopher Golden and Nancy Holden
and
“Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” by David Cody Weiss, and Bobbi J.G. Weiss
Number of books now in my “to-read” stack?
12.
If I read a book a month I should be through it by next November, and since I’m not publishing next year, hopefully that will be possible. 😅
EDIT: It’s also not as though I haven’t been slowly carving my way through my book stack. I’ve read something like 14 physical books, and way more than 11 audibooks this year (which is mostly me listening to books I’ve already read.) So... It’s fine. It’s all fine. My eyes are just bigger than my stomach.

will be keeping you busy 🤩
15, 21, 23, 29, 62, 86, and 94 for the asks thingie!
thanks 🤩😭
15. favorite book you read as a school assignment?
i have to admit i can't remember most of the books we had to read anymore and the ones i can remember were not good 💀 so instead i'm going to talk about my favorite books i had to read for my uni classes!
the first one is definitely Ronja Rövardottar. i've seen it as a play when i was a little kid and reading it as an adult in its original language was really fun.
another one would be Nora by Hendrik Ibsen. it's about a woman trying to take control of her own life and we read both the translated and the original version. it's a play, but none of the versions i've seen could really thrill me. the book however is great!
21. obsession from childhood?
i was and still am obsessed with the three investigators. i've loved the movies and i love the books even more. i'm even collecting them 😅
something i was obsessed with but not anymore is everything related to horses. i was looking forward to every new edition of the 'wendy' and i had all of the audiobooks 💀
same thing with the tweenies - i had (and still have) all the audibooks and according to my mum we had to run home from kindergarten every day so i wouldn't miss an episode (sorry mum)
23. strange habits?
i've mentioned the three investigators before and they are to blame for one habit: i'm kneading my lip when i have to think. one of the detectives does it and he's smart, so i was convinced it would work. it doesn't but i've kept that habit.
another one would probably be that i have to close the door of our fridge three times before i'm convinced it's really closed... when i had to move away from home to study my fridge door was open and i didn't notice it, and when i came back after a couple days everything in there started to mold. i'm still terrified of that happening again.
i'm pretty sure i have other strange habits too but i can either not think about it right now or i never noticed.
29. best way to bond with you?
food 😍
i actually haven't really thought about that before. food is always a good option, but other than that.. be nice to me, talk to me and let me talk to you? i can bond over a lot of things but if i have the feeling that you actually like me and care about me you don't really need to do much more.
62. seven characters you relate to?
seven 😭😭 let's see if i can come up with enough.
1. Charlie, Heartstopper. we are the same person, and i never related more to anyone.
2. Cath, Fangirl. she used to be number one but then Charlie came. trying to figure out who i am and what i want to do, the occasional self-doubts and a mess when it comes to romance. but with a very big heart and always ready to defend what she loves.
3. Bob Andrews, Three Investigators. the therapist friend, trying my best to keep the friend group together. stressed out 24/7
4. Nigel, Relic Hunter. once again constantly stressed out because of the people around me and my brain stops working whenever i see a pretty girl
i fear that's all, next time i'm gonna change the ask into 'what characters do I remind you of'. there are also way more reasons for each character but that would take too much time and my brain is tired 🤧
86. cookies or cupcakes?
i love cupcakes so much, but i can only eat a limited amount of it. so i guess i have to say cookies, because you can eat a lot more of them at any time you want to 🤩
94. favorite season?
spring 🤩 it's slowly getting warmer, the sun is finally shining again, you can hear bird again... it's so nice and my mood gets instantly better when it's not foggy and dark outside anymore
