Okay I don't know if this is a good place to ask, sorry if it's random or annoying! I'm trying to learn Welsh for study purposes (goal: read Mabinogi) and I'm wondering if y'all can recommend any welsh-language podcasts or audiobooks? Especially medieval-adjacent ones, because brain gremlins. Thanks! (I hope this isn't annoying.)
Hey! Not annoying at all, it makes me so so happy when people ask this question!! Welsh is still an endangered language and a really underappreciated literary culture, please learn and read Welsh and tell other people about it!
Now I've had this ask before but the Tumblr search function continues to be garbage so I'm just gonna start again.
The Learn Welsh Podcast is super useful, as is Y Podleidiad Dysgu Cymraeg from BBC Radio Cymru. You could also check out Doctoriaid Cymraeg.
The fiction podcast We Know None has a little Welsh language in it, as does @ethicstownpod. And Gather the Suspects, Seren and Chain of Being are all from Welsh creators, so I recommend them!
Audiobooks are a bit trickier - because Welsh is endangered there aren't as many. This said, the bookshop Y Lolfa is an amazing Welsh language book store that has a few Welsh language audiobooks, and you can access it online. It also looks like Audible has a 'Welsh language' section of audiobooks - a quick glance and I think the books by Colin Jones should be a good start. They're fantasy rather than real mythology but designed for learners.
Always check the reviews, as sadly due to Welsh not being as widely spoken as it once was, sometimes these things will be made with bad pronunciation / mistakes, and might take you down the wrong track.
Also just a note - the original language of the Mabinogion is Medieval Welsh, which is quite different to modern Welsh. However you can find translations of it into modern Welsh and English.
And finally - it's not an audibook, but there is now a Welsh language edition of The Hobbit, Yr Hobyd, if you want to try that!
Happy learning, thank you for the ask!

I asked about Ulster Cycle and Mabinogion translations a bit ago and just wanted to thank you for the rec because my copy of Sioned Davies' Mabinogion just arrived and it is AWESOME. The notes on cultural context and such, oh my gosh. Great happiness over here.
oh yay have fun. it's a great read. lovely balance of closeness to text and actual readability for a modern audience

I recently found your page of Arthurian sources and started working my way through it, and wanted to send my thanks--it's so helpful both for reading material and as a guide to works I'd like to track down a hard copy of eventually. Much appreciated! 💐
you’re so welcome! i’m continually adding to it so definitely check back periodically to see what’s new. if there are any texts you’re looking for that aren’t listed, i can try to find them to add, just let me know. :^)

Oooh Chesterton! Need to read more of him. Bravo for choosing poetry too, it is far too overlooked. Did not know that was the source of your username!
It's a tough question for me too! There are so many books I love, but when I think about it, it's so hard to choose!
Right now, I'd say it's back to a childhood favorite of mine, Eagle of the Ninth, by Rosemary Sutcliff. I recently re-read it, and it was one of those books that seems to grow with you instead of you outgrowing it. I also realized it had a huge impact on my imagination and is the reason I love stories of brotherhood. Also kennings, which Sutcliff uses all the time! Not that I knew the word for it as a child.
Also high up on the list are Till We Have Faces, by C.S. Lewis, The Queen's Thief Series, by Megan Whalen Turner, Piranesi, by Susanna Clarke, and Crime and Punishment by Dostoyevksy.
Hi! What's your favorite book? (Or a favorite??) ✨📚✨
(Let me guess - it's Arthurian legend related :))))
I spent way too much time last night thinking about this because apparently it's been a while since I was asked about my favourite book. 😜
Gonna go with The Ballad of the White Horse by G K Chesterton because it's a) tangentially Arthurian, b) poetry (and not enough favourite books are poetry books imo), and c) the source of my username thingy.
May I return the question? 📚

5 things that make me happy, tagged by @heartintherye
1. I look in a cookbook. There is a chocolate cake. It looks beautiful. It’s gonna taste beautiful one day. Its meaning is beautiful. Even the cookbook itself smells beautiful.
2. Another warm body. I run cold, like all the time. There is something in life that I never really understood until I hugged my partner for the first time, and felt a warm body all around mine.
3. Onions sizzling. The smell, the crackle noises, the knowledge that something tasting fucking amazing is coming up soon. The feeling of simultaneous health and pleasure.
4. When the student finally *gets* it. Many of my students work so hard for so long, and when it finally comes to them it’s such a joy.
5. Similarly, yoga, and when my body finally *gets* it. When something I struggled with for so long actually works fluidly and easily, and feels SO GOOD.
@gailyinthedark and @katsuki-king-of-twinks , if you feel like doing this.

I didn’t quite manage this either, but...
I’ve taken more baths this year than perhaps in my whole life. I get now why having your body surrounded by cozy warmth is good for your soul.
I have more clothes that I like this year than I ever have. I would never, ever judge someone on what they wear, but it’s not about other people. It’s that I get now why wearing clothes that you *like*, that *fit* is good for your soul. It’s that I actually care about the physical side of life a bit now.
I went to sleep early, without phone scrolling, without book reading, without brain circling, for more nights this year than I ever have. It was not many nights, and I think sleep will take many years to settle down. But there was something I was able to let go of that let me just be in bed. Some realization that just *being* in bed was the part that was good for the soul.
There’s still a part of me that cries out for the mental stimulation of all the languages and all the books and all the skills. But for right here and right now, the language of my body is a delightful one, and very rich and complex. Much to learn.
i was going to learn 12 languages, read 250 books and learn 75 new skills this year what happened

Thank you @gailyinthedark for tagging me to share 5 things that make me happy! (Also @siena-sevenwits since I had my hair in a ponytail 😄)
1 - surprising literally no one here, making lovely things and sharing them with people! I love making beautiful things for their own sake and for the process but I also love other people using and enjoying them too :)
2 - I remembered recently how to make the most amazing scrambled eggs! Can't believe I ever tried doing it any other way
3 - sunflowers!!! I have some standing guard over the back of my garden atm!
4 - love some single-topic friends. I love deeply the close friends who I share my whole life with but this is a shout out to the people I don't necessarily know well beyond one domain - but we can talk forever about pottery, or theology, or whatever it is that we share
5 - being up and about early, in the stillness of the morning - not a thing I manage that often, but lovely when I do
Tagging @brown-little-robin @scarvenartist @madamescarlette @cygnascrimbles (no pressure!)

@gailyinthedark, thank you for tagging me to share five small things that make me happy!
Buying myself a grapefruit and cutting it the old-fashioned way that friends showed me. (Very Victorian - you cut it in half, cut all the way round the inside to separate the fruit from the rind, slanting inward, and then cut up at the little sections along their own lines to loosen them so they may be eaten with a fork. It is very unnecessary, but I've been doing it that way the past dozen years in memory of those friends!)
The fact that I have gotten over the well-meant conditioning my family gave me that it was never okay to write in a book. My books, especially my Bible, are starting to be full of little notes and nicks of colour and tip-in pages, and it gives me so much joy and greater understanding, and focuses me so much. I currently do the majority of my reading by audio, but this is something I love when I have a physical book in hand.
If someone says something kind about my creative projects, it will last me for days. If it's a written comment, you can bet I will come back to it years later to soak up that kindness.
I don't consider myself a really strong cook, but on the rare occasions that I can plan a meal around salmon, I not only really enjoy it, but I get what they mean about cooking being a creative art.
Getting a big sheet of poster paper, and just drawing an enormous fantasy map on it, alone or with others. It is the most relaxing thing in the world. I have done it many times over the years, and it never gets old. And it turns out, cities are as fun to draw as continents.
Tagging anyone who wants to, or who has their hair in a ponytail right now.

name 10 songs with 10 names in the titles that I like and tag 10 people at the end.
tagged by @cygnascrimbles thank you!
Shout out to my folk playlist, MVP of this particular question
1 - Sophie by the Goodshirts - my sister walked down the aisle to a cover of this at her wedding so it has bonus sentimental value
2 - Maria from West Side Story - liked this even before I was a cast member in the musical at high school - fun fact, my first introduction to this was in music class, when they were trying to get us to learn the different intervals - there aren't many songs that start with an augmented fourth, also known as the devil's interval
3 - Ruaimoko by Maisey Rika - from one of the first pop albums in reo Māori, my (other) sister and I played it non-stop the year we flatted together
4 - The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald - obviously
5 - Geordie - folk playlist coming in strong
6 - Flora - and again
7 - Rasputin by Boney M - always a good time
8 - Victoria by the Exponents for the experience of everyone absolutely belting out the chorus together (this rendition is not true to what it's like to hear this song played literally anywhere in NZ) (in the process of finding the link I found out that Victoria was by the same people as Why Does Love Do This To Me so I guess they are just winning at songs that compel the entire room to belt it out? Never knew that)
9 - For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her - my parents were Simon and Garfunkel people, what can I say
10 - Maxwell's Silver Hammer - this one gets a spot for the sheer bewilderment I feel at the fact that this was a song we sang at primary school??? We sang it with gusto, which is probably predictable
tagging @coldwind-shiningstars @brown-little-robin @allisonreader @firefletch @cuppatealove @siena-sevenwits @e-louise-bates @noneofthesewillbringdisaster @gailyinthedark @gohoubi if this tickles your fancy?

One of the things I have learned as a teacher - there are some things in literature that students have to believe for a while and get passionate about,. You have to make space for them to express it before you try to steer them toward a greater curiosity and understanding of the character/the author's intention.
High schoolers often need to express some vitriol toward Romeo and Juliet's relationship, and a chance to throw disgust at it. They need it before you can get into discussions about why they might have fallen for each other in the way they did, or whether Shakespeare is holding them up for admiration or for something a little more nuanced, OR (and you can only have this discussion a little way down the road) why they're reacting to an ill-advised romance with such visceral frustration when they've been very even-tempered about murder and cheating and deception in other works. (And if they've been heard out first, they often find this discussion fascinating.) Once they've had room to give their honest first impressions, room for greater understanding and empathy is opened up.
Students need to joke with the teacher about how meandering Polybius is and how he seldom comes to his point. You need to good-naturedly tease Polybius from beyond the grave before you can throw a magnifying glass on the fact that Polybius's most interesting thoughts are in the "tangents."
Students need to be able to express that they're horrified that God would order the Israelites to kill every last Canaanite - have to admit that they can't seem to reconcile it with their understanding of a loving God. Only after this is acknowledged - that this is a difficult passage to comprehend - can you start examining it to understand.
I used to think I was aiding my students by debunking some thoughts before they could even be expressed. I thought if I gave them the chance to say these things, they'd become the entrenched class opinion, and they'd resent attempts to budge them from it. So I used to start classes with phrases like, "When it comes to Romeo and Juliet, many people tend to think ______, but in fact if we look closer...." I try not to do that anymore.
There must be room for honest first impressions, or you will not be able to go on honestly. No one can become more open-minded when you attempt to short-circuit their thoughts before they are even expressed.

Love that "my brother in Christ" became a thing, because fraternal correction is ripe for comedy! I do think all the adaptations of it into other phrases are hilarious though. Because while they often work for their jokes, almost all of them would be that much funnier with the original implied layer that you're being called out because someone thought it was their scriptural duty to do so, and probably feels super awkward about. They are just hoping you will amend your misguided opinions about Pokemon before they have to take you before two or three witnesses.

This is hardly original, but tonight I'm obsessed with how in the Passion narratives, even the words and accidental prayers of Christ's enemies are fulfilled and proclaim Him.
And Pilate seeing that he prevailed nothing, but that rather a tumult was made; taking water washed his hands before the people, saying: "I am innocent of the blood of this just man; look you to it." And the whole people answering, said: "His blood be upon us and our children." (Matthew 27:24-25)
They mean it in the most horrific and bloodthirsty sense - let us be proud to have caused this man's death! - but looking at their actual words - could there be a better prayer if meant with love? Let His blood, lovingly shed for us, mark us for all time! Not just in our generation, but in all generations to come! Let His sacrifice ensure our redemption. Let His blood be our true drink.
And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him... and saying: If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself... And one of those robbers who were hanged, blasphemed him, saying: "If thou be Christ, save thyself and us." (from Luke 23:36-39)
And He does! He does! He doesn't save Himself from mockery, torture, and death in that moment - He fulfills the thief's mocking "prayer" in a far more thorough and incredible way - He reverses death itself! He makes it that death has no power over Himself nor us!
And there was also a superscription written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. (Luke 23:38)
Pilate's plaque accurately proclaims to the world, in the local and universal languages, just who this is dying on the cross. In spite of Himself, he unwittingly proclaims the truth, though he questions what truth even is.
It's just - wild. All creation is telling the glory of God, even when we most reject Him.

My #1 post of 2022
Imagine meeting your online friends in person, and there is not one single moment of awkwardness except of the enjoyable kind. It's all joy. You get to see sides of them that never came through online. You get to see the light in their eyes. Their sense of humour is the same but broader because you're in person. Any worries you might have had that it will turn out disappointing or embarrassing fly out the window, and at the end of the day you feel twice as close as you already were, if not more.
