Books I finished reading in December 2024
Miss Islande de Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir
Tumblr media
The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin
Tumblr media
The Dispossessed, while technically being a sci-fi book, is a great book to read even for people who are not into sci-fi. It is a book that asks a lot of questions about how society is built and how it could be improved. It dives into alternate ways to live, showcasing an anarchist society where language has been completely rewritten to remove any capitalist ideas from it, while showing the flaws that could still appear in that sort of society. It's definitely a book that will leave you thinking and wanting to read more of Le Guin's writing.

"Eden", by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir.
"I was standing on my patch of grass, holding the tail of a mouse I'd caught in the house and looking for a hole to put it in, when a sentence I'd recently read in an article suddenly came to mind: language is the main tool of human beings in their struggle for power. It made me realise that although my job is to analyse how ideas and feelings fit into the mould of language, I haven't always been very good at matching my thoughts to my words. It's both strange and illogical that a mouse should be the source of such thoughts, and it's even stranger that, just afterwards, I decided to build a stone wall.", from Eden, by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir.
"While I'm drinking my coffee, he asks me if I still sometimes dream that I'm flying. I tell him that yes, I see myself flying over the Earth and observing it. Sometimes I even leave the atmosphere. I thought for a moment before adding that on the night Hlynur died, I dreamt I was floating above my property and that beside the stone wall was an orchard of fruit trees in blossom.
-In the centre were two apple trees in blossom.", from from Eden, by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir.

"People spend their entire lives looking for themselves. You'll never reach any conclusions on that front" - A Review of The Greenhouse by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir
Birth, Death, and everything in between is what shapes us as people. Lobbi is a young man recently burdened by the death of his mother, the birth of his daughter, and a insatiable desire to garden. Nordic Council prize winning author Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir lives up to her resume with an excellent story of a young man's rocky transition into a new chapter of life. Ólafsdóttir has a talent for such stories, as I've enjoyed the majority of her body of work, Miss Iceland, Hotel Silence, Butterflies in November. The Greenhouse slots in perfectly as another shining example of a slice of life for someone living a very different life to mine. I give the greenhouse 5 stars.

it occurs to me that she didn't want to come to a conclusion, because nothing is black and white enough to be unequivocally resolved, because no words are absolute.

You bid your husband farewell forever with a vigorous handshake and then meet him the next morning buying sesame seed bread rolls in the local bakery, queuing in the bank at lunchtime, swimming in the pool in the afternoon, or at the registry office later in the week, and then, the weekend after that, at the theatre with his new significant other--always inevitably bumping into each other

Mera, I saw it in the tags, what songs twst guys fuck you in?! 👀👉👈 care to elaborate?
I low-key can see Rook fucking us while playing "El Tango de Roxanne" by Moulin rouge in the background ❤
I am so happy you asked for an elaboration because omg do I have a Vision!!! >0<
Riddle - "Good Girl" by Thomas LaRosa.
Trey - "Kiss Me More" by Doja Cat or "Shameless" by Camila Cabello.
Cater - "Vacation Bible School" by Ayesha Erotica or "sex money feelings die" by Lykke Li, but then I also feel like Cater would fuck you to a few Doja Cat songs.
Ace - "Lights Down Low" by Maejor.
Deuce - "Die For You" by The Weeknd.
Leona - "The Best I Ever Had" by Limi.
Ruggie - "SAD GIRLZ LUV MONEY" by Amaarae.
Jack - "Baby" by Madison Beer.
Azul - "Like Crazy" by Jimin or "Night Swim" by SIDI.
Jade - "I'd Love" by Auður. This is peak Jade vibes, but also I think he'd fuck you to the slowed and reverb version of "Quarto de Hotel" by Hareton Salvanini.
Floyd - literally every Chase Atlantic song, but "Swim," "Tidal Wave," and "Heaven and Back" are the ones he's fucking you to the best. <3
Kalim - "telepatía" by Kali Uchis or "Wine Pon You" by Doja Cat.
Jamil - "You" by Ari Abdul. Every time I hear this song, I always think of Jamil.... orz so because of that I think he fucks you very good to this song!!!
Vil - "Low" by SZA or maybe "Escapism." by RAYE for sheet-gripping, emotional sex hehe!!
Rook - I can definitely see Rook fucking you to "El Tango de Roxanne," but then I also think he'd fuck you to "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails and "Monster" by Lady Gaga.
Epel - "No Guidance" by Ayzha Nyree.
Idia - this may seem funny (and it is), but I genuinely think he's putting on a Vocaloid song with sensual lyrics to fuck you to, namely "Game Over" by Konran-P. Idia refuses to fuck you to "normie music." T_T or, if you insist on wanting to hear human voices, maybe he puts on "yubisaki" by XYZ, but this is purely self-indulgent delusion.
Malleus - classical music. I imagine he's fucking you so good to the gothic classics. (˘︶˘).。*♡
Lilia - "Beast" by Mia Martina.
Silver - "tú" by maye!! It's such a sweet song and I think it perfectly fits how romantically Silver would fuck you. orz
Sebek - "No One Like You" by jess_xd.

Character Creation Challenge, Day 3: Runecairn
Third day, let's do it.
This time i picked Runecairn. This is a game based on Norse mythology and it's meant to be played as a duet but there are alternative rules to play either solo or with more players.
Looking at the manual, it is very beautiful, with illustrations either original or old public art that help the aesthetic, colorful but not in a overwhelming way that ruins the mood that the book tries to bring.
Okay, I found the character sheet, let's roll for stuff and let's get started.
Tumblr media
Stefán is a hunter by nature, grew out like one and became one. He was good, very good, hunted creatures bigger than himself and won, but he was never prideful, but always looking for the next hunt to provide and protect. He had a partner, Auður. She was gorgeous and kind, but not a hunter, so she was always left behind. One day, he came back, looking down at her corpse, surrounded by wolves. He killed them all. Someone let the wolves in, and he is going to figure out who, or what. He vow for vengance that day.
Honestly, I really like Stefán. I imagine him really noble-like which is the kind of character i really like to play. I like my Legolas-likes, what kind i say?
I really had fun making him, the tables are really useful to generate a character and had a really fun time figuring out who this character is. Now i really want to play him, to be honest.

3, 13, 20 for the book ask!
Hey, thanks :)
3.What were your top five books of the year?
In no specific order, as they are all quite different:
Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett
Your Absence is Darkness by Jón Kalman Stefánsson
The Map of Knowledge: How Classical Ideas Were Lost and Found: A History in Seven Cities by Violet Moller
Ancestors: a History of Britain in 7 burials by Alice Roberts
Proust and the squid by Maryanne Wolf
13.What were your least favorite books of the year?
Definitely the Book of M by Peng Shepherd. I thought the story had great potential but it eventually fell flat, became a real mess and I struggled to finish it.
20.What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?
I don't typically keep track of book releases. I discover books by accident when I wander around my favorite bookstore or thanks to the Goodreads algorithm. I usually buy a lot of books and end up reading them months or even years later.
When I come across a new book from my favorite authors, I have certain expectations. I’m excited about the latest book by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir, Eden, which I plan to buy this week (it was released a year ago here :-P). I enjoy her writing style; the specific topic is not as important to me. I just love how she portrays people, their feelings, and their relationships. The same goes for Jón Kalman Stefánsson. I used to be a big fan of Fred Vargas, a French crime author, but her last books have disappointed me. In my opinion, they have lost their originality and depth.

kingdom for the fantasy ask game!! :))
-dontcrywrite
hi!
kingdom - how many named places are there in your WIP? how much have you developed them?
tl;dr not many and not much.
i named a bunch of ports for Hurricane, but the ones that have most detail are Kings Cove (loosely based on Tortuga, the most common 'base' for the Hurricane), Serpent Run, Wavemeet (Theo's home), and Cape Auður (where Anvindr operates from; he took over a castle there).
for Dragonsong i am working on the worldbuilding but nothing has a name. it's just like,,, the citadel. the coast. Baya's town. etc.
fantasy motifs ask game is here!
